2. INTRODUCTION
Once upon a time,
getting a newspaper in
rural areas was a luxury.
Then came the radio and
life in the interiors
changed. Broadcasting
in the regional
languages was a
tremendously
successful experiment
and the non- metros took
to radio in a very big
way. Today it seems to
be the turn of television.
3. HISTORY
After getting the first taste of television, the market is
asking for more. The reason: in sight and voice medium
the communication is more complete. Until the 1980’s
the market for colour TV was virtually non-existent.
When the Asian games were staged in 1982, there was
a demand felt for colour TV’s.
Television has come to the forefront only in the last 15
years and more so in the past seven. There have been
two ignition points: the first in the eighties when the color
television was introduced by the state owned
broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) during the 1982 Asian
Games. It then proceeded to install transmitters
nationwide rapidly for terrestrial broadcasting. In this
period no private enterprise was allowed to set up TV
stations or transmit TV signals.
4. TELEVISION INDUSTRY
The number of homes with Cable &
Satellite access has jumped from 29
million homes in 2009 to 40 million homes
in 2010, a 31% annual growth during the
last two years. Television sales have
grown at a CAGR of 25% over the last 5
years. The 14", 20" and 21" televisions are
the most widely sold, accounting for about
90% of the market. Now in these days
LCD and LED are broadly in demand.
6. The reality television shows and the
Are you fond of watching TV? Are you a fanatic of
the new shows or the traditional ones? With so
many new shows on TV these days, do you stay
longer in front of the TV now than before? Are you
one of those avid viewers who anticipate and just
can’t wait for the next episode? Which shows do
you patronize?
Well nowadays, most young viewers prefer to
watch and enjoy reality TV shows. Different
viewers have different reasons why they do so, and
there lies the underlying effects of watching such.
Watching these shows has effects on the viewers
and the society in general. It may be positive to
some audiences, but it also affects negatively to
many, depending on how one views and takes the
essence of the show.
7. Cont…
In some ways, this gives the audience a connection with
the show’s stars as they feel that they are “real and
normal” people representing them. This is why the reality
shows are hitting big time in the TV scenes because the
audience empathizes with the show’s stars.
Unfortunately, this is also why reality shows have a
negative impact on the audience — because they tend to
think, act, and feel, like the show’s stars, and in the
process lose their own sense of critical thinking and
“real” emotions towards certain situations.
Reality television shows and their effects on society are
also dependent on the viewer’s desires and motives,
they see themselves in these stars and somehow these
stars are living their lives through the show. Each reality
show portrays and fulfills certain desires - like power or
influence, travel and living, survival and outwitting,
beauty and satisfaction, revenge and honor, etc.

9. The Good and Bad Effects of TV on Yo
It is hard to avoid television if you are a kid. People in the house are
usually tuned in to TV - siblings as well as parents. In some homes,
the television is perpetually "on" even without anyone watching. It
is common for parents and caregivers to use TV as a substitute
babysitter. Also, many parents buy videos that they think can make
their kids smart. But how does watching TV really affect children?
– The bad news is, the majority of experts think that a TV/video-driven
culture has bad effects on kids - and may prevent kids from being
smart. They cite the following:
– TV viewing takes away the time that your child needs to develop
important skills like language, creativity, motor, and social skills. These
skills are developed in the kids’ first two years (a critical time for brain
development) through play, exploration, and conversation. Your kid’s
language skills, for example, do not improve by passively listening to the
TV. It is developed by interacting with people, when talking and
listening is used in the context of real life.
– TV viewing numbs your kid's mind as it prevents your child from
exercising initiative, being intellectually challenged, thinking analytically,
and using his imagination.
10. Cont…
According to Speech and language expert Dr. Sally
Ward, 20 years of research show that kids who are
bombarded by background TV noise in their homes have
trouble paying attention to voices when there is also
background noise.
Kids who watch a lot of TV have trouble paying attention
to teachers because they are accustomed to the fast-
paced visual stimulation on TV. Kids who watch TV
more than they talk to their family have a difficult time
adjusting from being visual learners to aural learners
(learning by listening). They also have shorter attention
spans.
11. Cont…
School kids who watch too much TV also tend to work less on their
homework. When doing homework with TV on the background, kids
tend to retain less skill and information. When they lose sleep
because of TV, they become less alert during the day, and this
results in poor school performance.
TV exposes your kid to negative influences, and promotes negative
behavior. TV shows and commercials usually show violence,
alcohol, drug use and sex in a positive light. The mind of your kid is
like clay. It forms early impressions on what it sees, and these early
impressions determine how he sees the world and affect his grown-
up behavior. For instance, twenty years of research has shown that
children who are more exposed to media violence behave more
aggressively as kids and when they are older. They are taught by
TV that violence is the way to resolve conflict – as when a TV hero
beats up a bad guy to subdue him.
12. Some experts, however, believe that TV is not
all that bad. They qualify though that viewing TV
can be good if it is done in moderation, and if the
program being watched is selected:
– Some TV shows can educate, inform and inspire. It
can be more effective than books or audiotapes in
teaching your kid about processes like how a plant
grows or how to bake a cake.
– Studies show that kids who watch educational and
non-violent children’s shows do better on reading and
math tests than those who do not watch these
programs.
13. Cont…
– Kids who watch informative and educational shows as
preschoolers tend to watch more informative and
educational shows when they get older. They use TV
effectively as a complement to school learning. On
the other hand, kids who watch more entertainment
program watch fewer informative programs as they
get older (Macbeth, 1996).
– Preschoolers who viewed educational programs tend
to have higher grades, are less aggressive and value
their studies more when they reach high school,
according to a long-term study (Anderson, et. al,
2001).
14. CONCLUSION
More people enjoy a certain sense of pleasure and
satisfaction when they watch these reality television
shows and their effects on society are continuously
mirrored in the way they interact with others, deal
various situations, and face certain challenges.
One must be keen in absorbing the messages of these
shows and one must remember that each individual
handle scenarios, problems, dilemmas, differently. What
makes it worse than the way it affects people now, is that
viewers get entertained by the sadness, depression,
frustration, and emptiness that reality stars feel and
experience in the show.
