The questionnaires revealed several key points about the target audience for a short film:
- The majority are aged 16-20 and enjoy watching films, though not many per month due to cost or lack of appeal.
- Films should be 11-15 minutes long to engage viewers with enough time for a plot.
- Viewers prefer watching on streaming services like Amazon Prime or Netflix for convenience.
- The film should be accessible on YouTube for free to attract more viewers regardless of means.
2. The data collected says that the
majority of our target audience enjoy
watching films. This tells us that film is a
medium that our audience engage with.
However it doesn’t inform us whether
they like short or feature length films.
Therefore we will need to be more
specific with our closed questions so
that we are able to gather the relevant
information needed to produce a short
film our target audience will engage in.
Do you like short films?
3. The majority of our target audience is 16-20.
This data will allow us to make suitable decisions
about what will be appropriate to show in our film
and what will be not, in relation to the age of the
viewer.
Based off the results from this question the
certificate rating for the film will be 15+ and
contain themes applicable for that age. However
the themes and issues presented in our film will
be targeted at the 18-20 age group who will be
more likely to relate to the plot in some ways. For
example, the representation of living alone,
exposure to drug and alcohol use etc. This is not
inappropriate for a 15 year old but it will relate to
a slightly older age group more.
What is your age range?
4. The results of this question implies that the
majority of our target audience only watch one
film a month. This could be due to a number of
factors including cost or due to the fact that
many films do not appeal to this target
audience.
Therefore we will consider the suggested cost
our audience are willing to pay and promote our
film at short film festivals and on YouTube so
that despite your financial status it will be
available to anyone who is interested.
With taking the results into consideration we will
also try to encourage our audience to watch
more films by promoting other films, produced
my our production company, at the end of the
credits.

month?
5. The data collected informs us
that the majority of our target
audience enjoy watching films
on amazon prime or Netflix.
This suggests that they enjoy
watching films in the comfort of
their own homes. We will
ensure that our film is
accessible to our audience via
YouTube so that they can
access it where ever and when
ever they want.

These results show that the majority
of our audience would prefer to watch
a Short film with a duration of
approximately 11 – 15 minuets.
This infers that perhaps the audience
likes when there is enough time for a
plot to engage them. So this will also
enable us to develop our narrative as
we can have a longer duration of film
as opposed to only 2-5 minuets.
7. Do Subtitles prevent You from watching a
film?
We got a even split to this question 6 said yes while another 6 said no. This
shows suggests that having subtitles to are film could loose as much as half our
audience so it is for the best if we avoided using Subtitles since it could only
damage our films performance.
Yes No
8. Have you ever seen a Short Film Before?
5 said they had while 7 hadn’t. This suggests that to we would have to leave a
positive first impression on first time watchers of short film otherwise they may
loose interest in this genre of film forever. However those who have seen a short
film would roughly know what to expect, things such as a twist and social realism
wouldn’t surprise and shock them.
Yes No
9. How much would you pay to see a short
film in the Cinema or On demand?
The majority of people said between £2-5 would be the right amount to pay. This
is good because it shows there is a marketable interest in short films and it could
be profitable. It would only take about 10 people to see the film to make the
Shorts Budget back.
