This is a presentation on the ownership of how our movie trailer will be good in the business and also information about the big 6 compared to a independent movie studio. There is also information about the movie company Disney about the facts and figures.
2. The Big Six
The big six movie studios own approximately 80-85 percent of the US and
Canadian box office revenue. The big six include:
Warner bros/ Picture - Founded in 1923.
20th century fox - Founded in 1935.
Paramount Pictures - Founded 1912.
Universal pictures - Founded 1912.
Sony pictures - Founded in 1987.
Walt disney studios - Founded 1923.
3. Independant.
An independant film company can be a fully independant film company made from
scratch or can come from a bigger company like the big six an example of this is
Fox searchlight which is a indie company owned by 20th century fox who is owned
by 21st century fox.
They are often cheaper than big budget films and can cost less than a £1 to make
like Papadopoulos and sons which was distributed by Double M films and cost
being only £825,222.
4. The big six Vs independent.
Here is a comparison of an independent film company ( warp films) and a major
film company (20th century fox).
As you can see there are many differences from a main to a indie company due to money cost major studios can use that to an
advantage with more sequels and franchises, thus giving more of opportunity to make money. Also the fact that Warp Films only
releases 1-2 movies a year it reflects on their revenue as they can't afford to release 16 per year like 20th century fox.
Warp Films 20th Century fox
Formerly a radio company. More hype for films, currently have one of the
highest grossing films avatar (2009).
A lot if partnerships with TV channels ( this is england
channel 4 ).
More franchise based e.g Ice Age.
Less income than major movies studios. 16 movies released roughly a year
Release 1-2 movies a year.
5. Always evolving.
There are many different ways in which the movie industry as a whole is evolving,
not just for the studios but also for the cinemas. This is due to technology always
changing and gaining advantages towards other movie companies and give the
industry more of an advantage. There are many ways in which this has happened
for example 3D and cineworlds 4DX. Also the introduction of HD which is in most
if not all cinemas.
6. Why ownership is important.
Ownership in the movie industry is very important, for example the big six they you
are likely to get a small piece of control as they would be getting at least 80% of
the world wide film revenue so would be granted a piece of control to keep
bringing in money.
Ownership is also important as it can give you a better understanding of the movie
business as you would need to know what is going on financially and to know
what's going on in the media.
7. The main and ancillary tasks fitting into the industry.
The task we have chosson is to make and create a movie trailer from scratch with are new ideas, thoughts
and rules. We have decided to take a psychological route in what we want the final product to be. The
main task which is are movie trailer will fit into the industry as there are more and more movies being
made of psychological topics e.g thrillers or horrors so it would be nice to add to it using an original story
and ideas that we have thought and created it. Are ancillary tasks on the other hands which is posters will
be a great addition to what we want to create. With more films being advertised in different ways we
wanted to go back and make it more original and classic by doing a magazine advert showing the movie
off. We are also going to create a movie poster advertising the movie which will help us understand how
printing and how much it would cost in the real movie business. We are not obviously going to create and
print hundreds of copies of the poster but we still are going to research what they do and how much they
cost for the movie company's. We have also decided to make the movie a british film which means the
budget of the movie would have to lower than the bigger budget films.
8. Disney - History
Walt Disney Pictures was Co-founded in 1923 by the Disney brothers Ray O.
Disney and his brother Walt Disney. The company is one of the richest movie
companies in the world and ranks 3rd on the worldwide list being worth £52.7
billion. They own many different companies including espn, pixar etc.
The company originally produced short movies and in 1923 Walt Disney signed a
contract with M.J Winkler to produce a series of short films about comedies set in
the Alice in wonderland universe.
Due to the lack of popularity the alice short films were eventually pulled from
production and Disney invented a new character oswald the lucky rabbit which
was the prelude to Mickey Mouse.
9. Disney - Ownership
Disney Pictures was originally founded and owned by the Ray O and Walt Disney
and it currently is owned by the Walt Disney Company.
The annual revenue of the company is £14.68 billion and still remain as one of the
highest grossing movie company's.
10. Disney - Target Audience.
Disney has always had a type of audience in which it makes its products for this
being for younger age like 3-12 (Peter Pan, Frozen) and also for teens - young
adults (Marvel, Star Wars, Pirates Of The Caribbean). However this is sometimes
not the case for example Disney theme parks are made for any age child or not.
Unlike most movie companies who have audiences for different movies Disney
have always wanted to make movies for a specific age, I think that this is why
many people like and enjoy Disney as they know that no content will be bad for
younger viewers.
11. Disney - Audience Figures
Disney has always had a big audience and has always successfully engaged its
audience and has now spent £11.5 billion on trying trying to get a bigger and more
divurse audience as they have now purchased Marvel studios for £3.5 billion and
bought Lucasfilm for again £3.5 billion. The studio also bought pixar for £5.5
billion. Most company's would think this is a risky chance but with Disney getting
an annual revenue of £14.5 billion a year they can afford and still make a profit as
Star wars the force awakens received £2 billion as the box office.
