Question 3: who is the target audience of each terrestrial channel? Give examples of scheduled programmes to
support your views
BBC 1 is the main terrestrial channel people watch, it is suitable for all ages and it includes all of the
programmes people want to watch. A good example is doctor who, this is because this is something all ages
enjoy and it is or all different age ranges
BBC 2 is a channel which is made for more cultured viewers, its main aim is to be educational. It also seems
tobe aimed at older people as most of the programmes broadcast are formal. An example of the type of
programme broadcast is the antiques roadshow, which has a high class feel about it as it talks about historic
antiques.
Itv is the main competition to BBC 1, it is aimed at all ages and it broadcasts what people want to watch. A
programme which best describes itv is corrination street, this is their biggest show by far and it is broadcast
for all ages and it is usually broadcast when all ages are able to watch it.
Channel 4 is aimed at all ages, but it mainly tries to aim their programmes to teens and above, the aim of
channel 4 is to defy convention and show people another side of television, it is a very intriguing channel as
it bring in exports from other countries, main the USA. The programme which i think is a good example is
gogglebox, this is because it is a new concept and it is a very unusual and it is a different type of show that
nobody has seen before.
Channel 5 is the least watched of the terrestrial channels in my opinion as it doesn't aim for the family
audience, i feel that it is aimed at an older audience. Another thing that backs up my opinion is that almost
all of channel 5’s programmes are exported from different places around the world. I think the programme
that is a good example is home and away, this is a good example as it is an exported programme and it is
mainly aimed at teens upwards. This channel also likes to broadcast documentaries which are very unusual
as it usually gets a good audience as its very different.
