Recitatif Food Analysis
The Significance of Food
In the short story, "Recitatif," by Toni Morrison, food represents something that people come
together for, whether this be purposefully or by coincidence. When Roberta and Twyla had just
arrived at the girl's home, they were not welcomed by the other girls due to their backgrounds, so
they befriended each other. When the story explains and describes the budding of Roberta and
Twyla's friendship, part of the description is based on the idea of coming together for a meal, and
sharing not only time together, but actual food too. "Roberta hated it and left whole pieces of things
on her plate...and she didn't care if I ate what she wouldn't" (244). In this case, food is something
that the two girls could come together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An issue she had noticed throughout her life was that the wrong people always seemed to have the
wrong food, and with this a job waitressing, she would be able to change this. One day, while at
work Twyla recognized Roberta's familiar face and decided to approach her. The reunion was very
brief and not friendly; it seemed as though the two women who had once been so close were now
strangers living in two very different worlds. After yet another jump in time, the two women met up
yet again in a place centered around food, the Food Emporium, a grocery store which claimed to sell
gourmet food, and catered to the "rich IBM crowd" (251), of which only one of the women actually
belonged. This reunion was more positive than the previous, and the two women ended up going to
get coffee to prolong their reunion after their shopping. Roberta and Twyla were able to talk, share,
and laugh; it seemed as though "...twenty years disappeared and all of it came rushing back"

Recitatif Analysis
Although James Joyce's "The Dead" and Toni Morrison's "Recitatif" were written in two completely
different eras, and each narrative sets out to accomplish its own doing, we can draw clear parallel's,
as well as contrasts that undoubtedly accompany those. We are able to find similarities in underlying
themes employed by both James Joyce, as well as Tony Morrison. One of the most evident parallels
we are able to draw between the two texts lies in the recognition of reflection and sentiment, paired
with the growing disparity as the characters reflect back upon their past. Reflection is a crucial part
in accepting who we are and how we got where we are, it is easy to be preoccupied in the trials of
day to day life and neglect to give ourselves moments of disengagement and privacy amidst our own
journeys. Speaking on the prevalent theme of reflection, evident in both texts we can clearly see the
emotional toll that derives from the characters concealed sentiments of nostalgia. In both texts,
much of the rhetoric is centered around this omnipresent sense of regret and rumination that appears
to plague the characters and does seem to somewhat distract them from completely living in the
present. The divergence between past and present is more apparent in Toni Morrison's "Recitatif",
because the story encompasses a larger span of Twyla and Roberta's lives, from the point in which
they are eight years old, being first introduced as roommates at St Bonny's, up until after Twyla's
son graduates high school. The story begins with the two young girls being dumped at St Mary's by
their respective mothers, both of which were equally ill–equipped to raise children. Roberta's mother
who was sick and Twyla's who: "liked to dance all night" (pg. 132). The story then chronicles the
girls leaving the orphanage and the series of subsequent chance encounters which follow. Upon each
meeting the girls are given a chance to contemplate their past, which brings up controversial topics
for both, in particular the friction that accompanies the rhetorical question: "What the hell happened
to Maggie?" (pg. 147). Characterized as an outsider, Maggie is a mute kitchen helper working in St
Bonnies, however she plays an integral part of the

The Origins Of The Coles
HISTORY Coles have opened its first store in the year 1914 by the father of GJ Coles. The former
sign of the store is "Nothing over 1/–", the first store location is located in Smith St. Collingwood in
Australia. In history the genealogy of the Coles is actually started in their grandfather who also
bears the name GEORGE (a gold miner during the gold rush time in Victoria). GJ as often referred
to as George after graduating in middle school have been moved out of places in Australia to find a
greener pasture to his family. At the early age GJ had already seen a leadership in his characteristic,
He even asked his father to have his own grocery operated by him separated from the mother
company on its, financial status and obligation. His father never granted the request but as for the
young GJ mistake should be often see as opportunity. In this waving through the wind of being a
young, energetic and business minded. He flew to America and instead of going nice places he is
going to different markets and takes down notes about how they sell their product and how to attract
more consumers to come to the store. He even gets the idea from a big supermarket in the USA the
money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with your purchases. The original name of the Coles
Myer is from the first GJ Coles & Coy. Ltd., (Coles) discount Store. In 1919 a larger store was

Joseph Dunn, The Owner And General Manager Of Dunn's Ski...
Introduction Joseph Dunn is the owner and general manager of Dunn's Ski Emporium in Vail,
Colorado. Business has been above their competitors for years, but Joseph believes he is able to
bring in more business if he merges with the Deli next–door. The business from the ski emporium
has attracted customers to the deli and vice versa. George is thinking of retiring in the next few
years, and Joseph wants to ensure that George's success continues after he retires. Joseph is a social
architect by trade and has faith that he is able to change both businesses into one, while staying
above his competitors. Change demands leadership, and leadership is about coping with change. The
result is that businesses have to seek change to survive and compete effectively (Kotter, 1990). In
this case study, Joseph will create an illustration, encouraging imagination, and will show how all of
their employees will play a role in ensuring success. Joseph relies on his transformational leadership
style. He is a leader that is capable of initiating a bold strategy and is instrumental in the process that
change is occurring. In order for him to remain competitive, he must respond quickly to the
pressures of economic globalization (Lam, 2011). In order for Joseph to enhance his role as a leader
he has to take initiative, think outside the box, listen to and take advice from George and all
employees, and motivate everyone to work towards the end state: a combined, prosperous business.

Recitatif: Toni Morrison Essay
In 1983, Toni Morrison published the only short story she would ever create. The controversial story
conveys an important idea of what race is and if it really matter in the scheme of life. This story
takes place during the time period of the Civil Rights Movement. The idea of civil rights was
encouraged by the government but not enforced by the states, leaving many black Americans
suffering every day. In Morrison's short story Recitatif, Morrison manipulates the story's diction to
describe the two women's races interchangeably resulting in the confusion of the reader. Because
Morrison never establishes the "black character" or the "white character", the reader is left guessing
the race of the two main characters throughout the whole ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Mary is so embarrassed that she starts to curse uncontrollably. During the time period of the story,
the African Americans were seen as "animals" and swearing was viewed as being unwomanly and
animal like. At the third encounter, Twyla and Roberta meet each other at the Food Emporium which
is a rich, gourmet grocery store. Shopping at the same grocery store implies that both of the women
are well off economically and are not necessary struggling. This acquaintance counteracts the
previous theory that Twyla was black and Roberta was white because both women were shopping at
rich stores. Contradicting meetings like these happen throughout the short story and Morrison
manipulates the contrasting details of the races' to make the reader befuddled during the conclusion
of the story. Even by the fourth encounter, the women's races cannot be defined. Twyla and Roberta
see each other at a picketing riot for forced integration of busing in Twyla's hometown of Newburgh,
NY. "The forced busing was in favor by the black people because they wanted equality, while the
white people would be against it because they did not want their children to be around black people"
(www.hover.org). As Twyla is walking by the rioters, she is momentarily harassed by the people
protesting with Roberta. However, Roberta pays no attention to Twyla, ignoring her completely.

Budget Friendly Apps
You have more choices than ever when it comes to buying stuff. On top of malls, mom–and–pops,
big boxes, and your friendly neighbourhood store, you have entire shopping emporiums on the
Internet.
With a galaxy of choices at your fingertips, it can be difficult to commit to a budget or even set one.
But you know that you have to buy things at some point; unless you grow a prolific garden, you
need food to put on the table.
Fortunately, the same technology that has spawned these choices has given rise to applications
designed to help you cut down spending. Some help you fix a budget. Some give you coupons to
steep deals. Some facilitate price comparisons, while others suggest affordable restaurants. Some
even earn money.
These apps will lead you down the path of frugality in no time:
1. Unsplurge
Unsplurge's developers know the story well: Person sets budget, then watches it unravel –all
because no one holds him or her accountable.
What sets Unsplurge from other budgeting tools is that it leverages the power of peer support. This
app keeps you on the wagon by displaying their budget goals to other users, with the goal of getting
them to motivate you. Sometimes a pat on the back is all you need to avoid flushing your money
down the drain. Businesses would do well to include this in a suite of apps to streamline their
operations.

Nordstrom 's A Fashion Bazaar
Many people know that Nordstrom 's is a fashion bazaar. What multitudinous amounts of people do
not grasp is that Nordstrom 's positioned itself as a retailer of high end clothing and extravagant
goods. This is how Nordstrom 's distinguished itself from other retailers. Numerous people associate
Nordstrom's with other ubiquitous department stores, such as Macy 's and JC Penney. Interestingly,
these stores are not Nordstroms ' predominant competitors. Because Nordstrom 's caters to a more
expensive partiality, its main competitors include upscale department stores such as Bloomingdale 's
and Saks Fifth Avenue. Within Nordstrom's marketing strategy, the emporium must strategize ways
to discern itself from both the mid–scale department stores as well as the high–end ones.
Nordstrom's is able to accomplish this through its determination of which products to vend, its
customer service policies, and the schematics of typical Nordstrom 's store design. Nordstrom's
product selection is probably the store's most effective method of distinguishing itself from its
competitors. The comprehensive categories of goods which the store supplies offers the initial
disparateness from most other retailers in the market. Many stores offer a specific category of goods,
such as food with grocery stores. Other retailers, such as Target or Walmart, offer a wide variety
goods. Nordstrom's has established itself as a retailer of clothing, shoes, and accessories. This over–

Persuasive Essay On Obesity In Schools
Obesity is defined as a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health
problems: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. Obesity is a nationwide epidemic,
especially in today's younger generation. This is caused by all the processed, fatty, fried junk food
that is easily accessible everywhere. For instance, schools are promoting unhealthy eating habits by
providing unhealthy lunches and allowing students to buy unhealthy junk food through vending
machines and fundraising method. The government must begin financing for healthier food in
schools to promote healthier eating habits as well as making unhealthy foods less accessible and
healthy foods more accessible. In today's world, convenience is a necessity and as a result fast food
joints are around every corner. In addition to fast food being easily available, it is promoted
everywhere on media which is only encouraging our youth to eat more fast food, when they should
be eating healthier. Instead of promoting fast food, a much more convenient option, the government
and schools should be promoting healthier foods and healthier eating habits, which can be achieved
through making fast food less accessible. In her article, "Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First
Figuring Out Its Cause," Jane E. Brody talks about how in the past, junk food was less accessible
compared to the present day, "When I was growing up in the 1940s and '50s, I had to walk or bike

The Industrial Revolution Of The Middle Class Essay
As the Industrial Revolution brought a rise of the middle class, a mass participation in the market
emerged, thus a new system of trade was required. The concept of active buying was therefore
transformed and passive shopping became the future. The new ways to shop became a revolution in
itself, contributing to all aspects of consumerism, mass production and industrialisation in society.
Defined by the Oxford Dictionary, consumerism is "the protection or promotion of the interests of
consumers." The initial concern for building sales and providing ease for shoppers employed by
department stores allowed the ability to develop a system of promotion. By applying a range of key
methods concerning payment, customer service, target audiences, the atmosphere, and visual
merchandise, businesses have been enabled to rapidly increase their sales since the introduction of
the department store. Hence came a new model of consumerism, of which is still relevant in
department stores to this day.
Before the giant emporiums of the early department stores were introduced and window shopping
was born, the consumer experience was far more direct in terms of purchasing goods. Shops and
stalls would sell only one specific type of product or focus on a single service. For example, one
would not typically find shoes in a store that specialises in selling homewares. This was originally
designed for ease of the experience between both the merchant and the consumer. The merchants
and craftsmen would

Disadvantages Of Eco House
Homes are modern day human necessities that are crucial to allow us to live safe and comfortable
lives. Humans heavily rely on them, however many homes are not sustainable, and leave negative
impacts on the env2ironment. Eco houses have the potential to solve this issue, as they are defined
as "a dwelling that uses materials and (perhaps) technology to reduce its energy needs and its impact
on the environment" (Pullen, 2016). By using energy alternatives and sustainable designs, eco–
houses are a much more practical and greener way of living, and will lead to a better future for our
world.
There are many forms of alternative energy sources that take the place of typical fossil fuels. One of
the most common uses of these sources for eco houses is solar energy. Solar energy is when sunlight
is converted into electricity for use, most commonly through solar panels. Solar panels are
comprised of multiple photovoltaic cells, which absorb sunlight and transfer it into standard DC
electricity. Photovoltaic cells are usually made of silicon, a semi–conductor (Roaf, 202). Solar
panels are commonly installed on the roofs of houses where there is little blockage of the sun.
Almost all eco houses employ solar energy as a main source because no waste is produced. Solar ...

they produce significantly less carbon dioxide. In the UK, standard houses produce up to 25% of the

renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, or even wind power. Eco houses also provide a
healthier living environment. Plants and vegetation both indoors and outdoors produce oxygen for
healthy breathing. Air is also cleaner due to less carbon dioxide emissions. These advantages of eco
houses provide less harm to the environment, as well as to our own

The Scenario Of Sericulture
Scenario of sericulture industry in Maharashtra State, India
Hiware Chandrashekhar Jalba
Abstract
Sericulture is one of the oldest industries in India and Asia. Sericulture is an agro–cottage, forest
based industry, labor intensive and commercially attractive economic activity falling under the
cottage and small–scale sector. The silk is the final product of this industry. It particularly suits to
rural population working with agriculture, entrepreneurs and artisans as it requires low investment
with potential for relatively higher returns. It provides income and employment to the rural poor
especially, farmers with small land–holding and marginalized and weaker sections of the society.

The bivoltine sericulture development has been one of the priority sectors of Indian silk industry but
its production is yet to meet the targets. Women play a dominant role in this sector, as the activities
are mostly home–based. Women have been contributing to all the sectors of Sericulture starting
from on–farm activities to fabric production, marketing and consumption. The involvement of
women in different activities of Sericulture is well above 53 per cent
Gangopadhyay, 2008 [1].
This paper mainly focused on socio– economic development, employment generation, and
sericulture sector activities in the state. Sericulture industry requires low investment and it helps to
earn higher returns in short gestation period, due to this the farmers are getting attracted to this
sector and it is a best tool to improve the rural economy as well as to improve their living standards.
It is a boon to the rural population associated with agriculture and helping them to avoid suicidal
attempts by earning very good amounts throughout the year.

Summary: The Epidemic Of Obesity
America's obesity epidemic is a modern issue, where 45 years ago there was no such thing as
'statistics' for such a topic. This epidemic is affecting young adults from the ages 18–25 due to their
new independent lives, and eating foods high in fats, sugars, and calories. Fast food restaurants and
quick prep foods have also made it easy for one to fall into the 'trap' of eating unhealthy processed
foods. It is very difficult, but not impossible to find something quick and easy to make, that is not
processed. Another factor contributing to this would be of this age group living sedentary lives, with
technology being a big part of causing these lifestyles. In order to combat this epidemic, we must

unhealthful foods... That money could be used to subsidize the purchase of staple foods like
seasonal greens, vegetables, whole grains, dried legumes and fruit" (Bittman). These young adults
buy because it's addicting and cheap so raising the prices would help. Taxing stuff like harmful
beverages or junk food can avoid people from becoming overweight and obese. Stephens claims,

elasticity of demand for their main product sold; donuts. Elasticity is determined by the percentage
change in quantity demanded divided by the percent of change in the product price. The initial
quantity demanded, being 5,000 sales a month later turned into 4,500 sales a month in response to
the price change from $1 to $1.50. A $.50 cent increase in price led to a decrease in total quantity of
donuts sold by 500. The percentage of change is a 50% increase in price along with a percent of
change in quantity of –10%. Elasticity then becomes –10/50 giving us an elasticity of –.2, but since
elasticity is always positive, the negative sign is disregarded. The number .2 elasticity is very close
to being unitary elastic but still inelastic, meaning that the demand changes according to price at an
almost equal rate. Therefore, we recommend that Blinkie's Donut Emporium does not raise or lower
the price to enhance sales, but keeps the price the same. They can increase the price by a few cents,
but we believe leaving the price as is can avoid the loss of regular customers from a practical
standpoint. Pricing Strategy As a means to generate more sales and attract more potential customers,
Blinkie's Donut Emporium uses third–degree price discrimination as their main pricing strategy.
Everyday, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, Blinkie's Donut Emporium offers a 10% senior citizen

The Identity Of Twyla And Roberta Essay
Toni Morrison's only short story was Recitatif, she never reveals which character is white or black.
The story explores the relationship between Twyla and Roberta, and their experiences based on their
racial differences. By decoding each characters racial identity, we can then understand how race
defines a person's status in society. In analyzing the social cues such as culture, politics and
economic signs, to identify the racial identity of Twyla and Roberta. I believe that Twyla is the white
character and Roberta the black character. During the course of the narrative Twyla describes her on
and off again relationship with Roberta. The girls first meet during their short stay at St. Bonnie's,
which was an orphanage, they both were 8 years old. Neither of the girls were real orphans, and
because of this they were alienated from the other girls, and they became friends real fast. Twyla's
mother is assumed to be a stripper, while Roberta's mother was much too sick to care for her. With
any story, the reader develops a visual image of each character. What one person see's another
person may not, and is probably different from what the author originally envisioned. Typically the
author provides physical descriptions of each character. But in Recitatif physical descriptions of the
characters are purposely left out, leaving the identities to the imagination of the reader. However,
Morrison gave us small clues as to which of the girls was white or black. By decoding the girl's

Speech On Wealth And Wealth
A lot of people want to achieve wealth and prosperity just for the money, not knowing that there are
actually far more benefits to being rich than the riches themselves! If you make more money, you'll
be privy to a world you never knew existed! Here are some of the factors that make up this
exclusive enclave:
1. Wealth and prosperity allows for generosity.
Being rich does not have to equate to being selfish. In fact, if you make more money, you can be
better equipped to be the most generous person you could ever be! You can donate to all the
charities whose causes you believe in, or you can even set up your own charities and run them in
your free time! Yes, you don't have to be rich to be generous, but having all that money certainly
comes with the perks of being a good benefactor. So, if you have a lot of disposable income, dispose
of them in the most humane way possible!
2. Wealth and prosperity allows for an excellent education.
One of the most valuable perks when you make more money than you need is the ability to take all
kinds of classes in all kinds of educational institutions to help enrich your intellectual side! While
there are some rich people who would prefer to shut out their intellect in favor of just lounging their
life away, there are others who are thirsty for knowledge and actually can do something about it.

Coles Myer Corporate Structure
Corporate Structure
Introduction
Corporate structure is the way in which the parts of a corporation are put together. Corporations
usually have several strategic business units (SBUs). These SBUs are also called strategy centers,
strategic planning units, or independent business units (Jain, 1990, p.17). Kotler (1997, p.71) states
that an SBU is a single business or collection of related businesses that can be planned separately
from the rest of the company. An SBU can be a company division, a product line within a division,
or sometimes a single product or brand (Kotler et al., 1998, p.35).
A corporation and its SBUs have structures that must be understood before a marketing plan can be

The Lightning Thief Book And Movie Analysis
Movies are Thieves A common goal of Hollywood productions is to attract a vast audience. In order
to earn mass profits from their movies, directors will change any storyline to create an easy to
follow, action–filled success. The Lightning Thief novel, written by Rick Riordan, and The
Lightning Thief motion picture provide excellent examples of how books are morphed into classic,
money–making attractions. Even though The Lightning Thief book and movie both share main
characters and settings, the book expresses more detail and educates the audience while the movie
focuses more on action and convenience, allowing for more errors between plots. Action is one of
many differences found between the book and the motion picture. The entire plot of the movie
revolves around finding and fighting for the pearls of Persephone, but in the book, Percy, the main
character, receives the pearls as a gift on behalf of his father for use in a time of trouble. The settings
and opponents faced by Percy and his companions, Annabeth and Grover, are the same: Medusa at
the Emporium, Hydra at the Parthenon replica, and the Lotus–eaters at the casino. However, the
reward for winning in the book is survival, not a pearl as portrayed in the movie. Another example is
the scene involving Hades' Minotaur. Percy is not an experienced fighter at the beginning of the
book; therefore, Percy faints after taking one of the Minotaur's horns. The movie illustrates Percy as
a potentially skilled hero in

Walt Disneyland Informative Speech
Walt Disney came up with the idea of Disneyland while watching his daughters play on the
carrousel at Griffith Park. The very bench that he envisioned Disneyland on can be found inside the
park on Main Street. The Happiest Place on Earth opened on July 17, 1955. The grand opening of
Disneyland was a complete disaster.
Opening day was supposed to be invitation only. However, many people forged and counterfeited
the tickets. About 30,000 people squeezed through the gates that day.
Nowadays, the park sees hundreds of thousands of people visiting the park each week. The park,
opening with only 18 attractions, was not able to cater to so many people. With the amount of

Walt wanted the park to be spotless at all times and wanted the guests to only see the magical side of
Disneyland. He and The Imagineers created their own color called "Go Away Green" that they used
to paint the wall around Disneyland, gates, and any unsightly equipment behind attractions. The idea
was that the color is so neutral, that it would go unnoticed by the common eye. The door to Club 33

of his guests and cast members. Each secret of Disneyland was created for a specific reason by Walt

Little Tsukiji : The Market Industry Profile Essay
The Market
Industry Profile
Little Tsukiji is a Japanese restaurant serving sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki. Japanese food is very
much popular in Singapore. In Singapore, it is very common for office workers to eat out for lunch.
"As of 2001, there are more than a hundred Japanese restaurants in Singapore, of which about one–
third are sushi restaurants. The rest include family restaurants, izakaya, teppanyaki, ramen and fast
food restaurants. And in many Japanese restaurants, sushi and/or sashimi is a must on the menu."
(Ng, 2001, Pages 8 – 9) Therefore, the choice of a restaurant specialising in teppanyaki, as it is not
as common in Singapore and there is a lot of opportunity to make a mark with differentiation in
products.
Competition for teppanyaki is not as strong as it is with sushi restaurants as there are not as many
teppanyaki restaurants around Singapore. Additionally, where there are a group of restaurants, a few
are bound to be Japenese restaurants serving different types of Japanese food. Within the
neighbourhood of Tanjong Pagar (targeted location for setting up the restaurant), the Japanese
restaurants in the area are that of sushi, sashimi, ramen, gyoza restaurants. There are other Asian
cuisine restaurants around the area such as Korean BBQ and Vietnamese food. More details about
the competition will be discussed in the next section, "Competition".

This suggests that Hank's parents, like many people in modern society, will not find happiness
because they live with insatiable desires and therefore will not get the feeling of satisfaction in their
lives. The characterization of Hank himself also shows how people in the contemporary society
always want more. For example, when Hank woke up from his dream about his socks, he realized
that" nothing good or special or wonderful has happened to him." (7) This shows that Frank is
idealistic and has superfluous expectations in life. Also, Hank has a nice girlfriend who cares about
him and loves him, but he still thinks about how he would leave her even though there are no
reasons for him to do so. When his girlfriend asks him if he was happy, he says, "Sometimes I am.
Mostly, I guess I just feel like I can't be really happy. Just missing something important." (7)
Another passage would be when his girlfriend asked him if he likes her, he answered:"sometimes I
like you and maybe I think I even love you a little. And sometimes I hate you." (7) We can see that
Hank is uncertain about his feelings for his girlfriend and if she is the person that he wants to be
with. Those are typical examples of a person who is not sure about what he wants and believes that
there is always something better waiting for him. The thing that is missing for Hank is simply
appreciating what he already possesses. From this reasoning, it is clear that great

Recitatif On Racial Essay
Recitatif on Racial
Racism or rather racial is a theme that clearly comes out and captures the mind of every reader upon
reading the short story "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison. The short story starts by bringing two young
girls Roberta and Twyla who meet one another in the children's orphanage. From the outset, it is
clear that either of the girls is white or black. When the two girls were young, they were not
conscious about the color of their skin, however, as they age; the contrast in personality brings about
separation. The two articles by Bennet "Toni Morrison and the burden of the passing narrative" and
Stanley "Maggie in Toni Morrison's Recitatif" plainly explains about Racism as brought out by Toni
Morrison. However, they underestimate the status of the book by restricting the short story in its
racial context. Therefore, my goal is to examine racism in a different perspective rather than what
the two readers weighed.
Racial in the book can be used to decode racial identity in the story. At first, the two major
characters are formed by their racial differences and Morrison doesn't disclose which girl is black
and which girl is white. To be able to decode the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

her position as disabled places her in a situation where violence can be done to her, violence without

poverty has an imposition to the dominant gaze. Also, the final statement of Roberta words is to

How Does Morrison Use Direct Characterization In Recitatif
Two women. One black, one white. Separated not by their race, but by their character. This idea is
found throughout the short story "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison. "Recitatif" follows the story of the
protagonist, Twyla, and her encounters with her childhood orphanage roommate, Roberta. In the
beginning of the story, Morrison makes it clear that Twyla and Roberta are of different races, but
never actually states which race each one is, which greatly enhances the characterization and
meaning of the story. This forces the reader to interpret the thoughts and actions of the characters
without the social stigma behind the color of a person's skin and question why the author chose to
handle the characterization in this way. Throughout the course of the story, Morrison is very
meticulous with characterization. By purposefully withholding the race of Twyla and Roberta, the
reader is forced to define the characters through more than just their skin color. As a result, the
reader learns more about Twyla's character through direct and indirect characterization. For
example, during Twyla's encounter with Roberta at Howard Johnson's Morrison writes, "Maybe she

Twyla and Roberta are anything but predictable. Throughout the narrative, the reader can never be
sure when, where, or why Twyla and Roberta will meet next or what they are going to say to each

St. Bonny's. The reader is not expecting this and it forces them to question Twyla's reliability as a
character. At the end of the story the reader learns that what Roberta said was not true. "And you
were right. We didn't kick her. It was the gar girls. Only them. But, well, I wanted to" (Morrison

Starbucks Is The Premier Coffee Emporium Company

Starbucks is the premier coffee emporium company in the United States and worldwide. It is
arguably the most recognizable name in the specialty coffee industry. The company was founded by
Gerald Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Ziev Siegl with the opening of its first upscale shop in
Seattle, Washington in 1971. Howard Schultz, who joined the team in 1982, later bought out his
partners and fashioned his new stores after the Milan, Italy coffee customs he observed during his
travels there. His intent was to establish his coffee houses as a "third place" behind home and work.

Also, very little paid advertising was needed. Word–of–mouth and visible locations were the best
marketing ploys. Starbucks employees or "partners" were paid well, tended to stay, and got
promoted from within the company. Howard Schultz's philosophy was that satisfied employees lead
to satisfied customers. Partners receive both "hard skills" (the specific operational talents) and the
"soft skills" (customer satisfaction focus). To accomplish Starbucks' objective of becoming the
"most recognized and respected brand in the world" they relied on aggressive, diversified expansion
to take advantage of the specialty coffee popularity, introduced new products, and added store value
cards (SVC's) and Wi–Fi hotspots for its customers. The 1992 prosperous, educated, white–collar,
older demographic customer majority was evolving into a more diverse clientele in 2002 that was
less affluent, less–educated, and younger. Baristas were called upon to serve more customized drink
orders and at the same time adhere to the three–minute rule for the time it takes to get the order
filled. At the same time, they were supposed to engage in friendly, pleasing banter. Starbucks was
using a mystery shopper program called "Customer Snapshot" that evaluated "Basic Services"
(service, cleanliness, product quality, and speed of service) and "Legendary Service" (partners going

The Art Exhibition Of The Piano For More Than 10 Years
As a person who has been learning to play the piano for more than 10 years, I not only love music,
but also am interested in other various forms of arts. Painting, which is the practice of applying
paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface, is one kind of arts I love. Therefore, instead of
having dinner with friends, I went to the Emporium Center and visited "The Fall Juried Show: 41st
Fall Art Exhibition" at 6 pm on last Friday.
It was a rainy day. Walking along the sidewalk in downtown Knoxville with the rain made me a
little melancholy, but I did not feel bad because I thought that melancholy is a good feeling for
enjoying arts. When you are melancholy, your senses will be more sensitive, which makes you
notice more details of various kinds of arts. When I stood in front of the Emporium Center, the
building "The Fall Juried Show: 41st Fall Art Exhibition" was displayed at, I could see that the
exterior wall of this building was consisted of tawny bricks. Some bricks were dark tawny, and some
bricks were light tawny. A mottled exterior, brick wall made it seem like this building was steeped in
history, and so it did. The Emporium Center was originally built in 1898, and was re–opened

Department Stores
Department Stores are Struggling!
Ashley Pearson
FYS: History of Providence
Professor Hughes
December 17, 2012
In 2012 department stores in Providence are struggling. When one takes a drive through Providence
the main retail stores are in the Providence Place Mall. From an outsider's point of view it doesn't
look like these stores are struggling. After all, everyone in Providence knows where this tremendous
mall is. What people do not know is that in reality they are headed downhill. These stores are
department stores. A department store is a large retail store carrying a wide variety of merchandise
and organized into various departments for sales and administrative ... Show more content on

By 1986, the ultimate fate of the Big O was decided by a grand fire.[15] Afterwards, Johnson and
Wales University soon cleared the site and its built dorms in the Big O's place. If you drive down
Weybosset Street today you will still be able to see the tremendous clock tower that was once owned
by The Outlet. The Shepards department store was another department store that rose and fell in
Providence's earlier years. Shepards was the department store that was the biggest rival to The
Outlet. It opened in 1880 at the corner of Westminster and Clemence Streets. According to Midge
Frazel, customers could shop and have your purchases sent by delivery truck to your home if you
lived near the city.[16] This would create an easy and affordable way to get the items you needed,
especially if you needed a bunch of items! Shepards was also one of the three department stores that
were connected by the Tri–Strore Bridge. This bridge connected Gladding, Shepards and Cherry &
Webb. The bridge was built shortly before 1900.[17] The bridge encouraged people to not only go to
one of the stores, but all three. So, if you liked one store you were apt to go to try the other by just
walking through

Anthrax Case Study
As of today, November 11, 2016, 489 confirmed cases and 117 confirmed deaths of inhalation
anthrax, the most deadly form of anthrax, have been reported to hospitals spread across Central
Indiana. The first reported case was on November 4, 2016, after that the cases kept flooding in. The
early symptom reports were minor, gradual and flu– like, often complaining of sore throats or
headaches. After a few days, more and more people began to report these minor symptoms, in
addition to more severe respiratory distress; such as shortness of breath, chest and muscle pain, and
even coughing up blood. Hospitals were able to confirm that this was in fact inhalation anthrax
when patients were found to have mediastinal widening and pleural effusion, often found in patients
with this form of anthrax, by taking X– rays and CT scans of patient's chest. Hospitals were also
required to test directly for Bacillus anthracis, or the anthrax bacterium, in samples of blood, skin,
spinal fluid, or respiratory secretions before patients could begin receiving the specific treatment for
Anthrax. However, receiving lab reports and finally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The incubation period of anthrax is typically 1–6 days. Taking into account that the first case was
reported on November 4th, the FBI made the assumption that the outbreak most likely occurred
within the previous 3 days. With this in mind, they asked all the patients where they had been and
what they were doing from November 1st through November 3rd. With this information they were
able to make a shocking connection. It was discovered that all individuals who were exposed to the
air bourn spores were in or around one of the following places on November 2, 2016 from 7AM–

  • 6. Recitatif Food Analysis The Significance of Food In the short story, "Recitatif," by Toni Morrison, food represents something that people come together for, whether this be purposefully or by coincidence. When Roberta and Twyla had just arrived at the girl's home, they were not welcomed by the other girls due to their backgrounds, so they befriended each other. When the story explains and describes the budding of Roberta and Twyla's friendship, part of the description is based on the idea of coming together for a meal, and sharing not only time together, but actual food too. "Roberta hated it and left whole pieces of things on her plate...and she didn't care if I ate what she wouldn't" (244). In this case, food is something that the two girls could come together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An issue she had noticed throughout her life was that the wrong people always seemed to have the wrong food, and with this a job waitressing, she would be able to change this. One day, while at work Twyla recognized Roberta's familiar face and decided to approach her. The reunion was very brief and not friendly; it seemed as though the two women who had once been so close were now strangers living in two very different worlds. After yet another jump in time, the two women met up yet again in a place centered around food, the Food Emporium, a grocery store which claimed to sell gourmet food, and catered to the "rich IBM crowd" (251), of which only one of the women actually belonged. This reunion was more positive than the previous, and the two women ended up going to get coffee to prolong their reunion after their shopping. Roberta and Twyla were able to talk, share, and laugh; it seemed as though "...twenty years disappeared and all of it came rushing back" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Recitatif Analysis Although James Joyce's "The Dead" and Toni Morrison's "Recitatif" were written in two completely different eras, and each narrative sets out to accomplish its own doing, we can draw clear parallel's, as well as contrasts that undoubtedly accompany those. We are able to find similarities in underlying themes employed by both James Joyce, as well as Tony Morrison. One of the most evident parallels we are able to draw between the two texts lies in the recognition of reflection and sentiment, paired with the growing disparity as the characters reflect back upon their past. Reflection is a crucial part in accepting who we are and how we got where we are, it is easy to be preoccupied in the trials of day to day life and neglect to give ourselves moments of disengagement and privacy amidst our own journeys. Speaking on the prevalent theme of reflection, evident in both texts we can clearly see the emotional toll that derives from the characters concealed sentiments of nostalgia. In both texts, much of the rhetoric is centered around this omnipresent sense of regret and rumination that appears to plague the characters and does seem to somewhat distract them from completely living in the present. The divergence between past and present is more apparent in Toni Morrison's "Recitatif", because the story encompasses a larger span of Twyla and Roberta's lives, from the point in which they are eight years old, being first introduced as roommates at St Bonny's, up until after Twyla's son graduates high school. The story begins with the two young girls being dumped at St Mary's by their respective mothers, both of which were equally ill–equipped to raise children. Roberta's mother who was sick and Twyla's who: "liked to dance all night" (pg. 132). The story then chronicles the girls leaving the orphanage and the series of subsequent chance encounters which follow. Upon each meeting the girls are given a chance to contemplate their past, which brings up controversial topics for both, in particular the friction that accompanies the rhetorical question: "What the hell happened to Maggie?" (pg. 147). Characterized as an outsider, Maggie is a mute kitchen helper working in St Bonnies, however she plays an integral part of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Business has been above their competitors for years, but Joseph believes he is able to bring in more business if he merges with the Deli next–door. The business from the ski emporium has attracted customers to the deli and vice versa. George is thinking of retiring in the next few years, and Joseph wants to ensure that George's success continues after he retires. Joseph is a social architect by trade and has faith that he is able to change both businesses into one, while staying above his competitors. Change demands leadership, and leadership is about coping with change. The result is that businesses have to seek change to survive and compete effectively (Kotter, 1990). In this case study, Joseph will create an illustration, encouraging imagination, and will show how all of their employees will play a role in ensuring success. Joseph relies on his transformational leadership style. He is a leader that is capable of initiating a bold strategy and is instrumental in the process that change is occurring. In order for him to remain competitive, he must respond quickly to the pressures of economic globalization (Lam, 2011). In order for Joseph to enhance his role as a leader he has to take initiative, think outside the box, listen to and take advice from George and all employees, and motivate everyone to work towards the end state: a combined, prosperous business. The controversial story conveys an important idea of what race is and if it really matter in the scheme of life. This story takes place during the time period of the Civil Rights Movement. The idea of civil rights was encouraged by the government but not enforced by the states, leaving many black Americans suffering every day. In Morrison's short story Recitatif, Morrison manipulates the story's diction to describe the two women's races interchangeably resulting in the confusion of the reader. Because Morrison never establishes the "black character" or the "white character", the reader is left guessing the race of the two main characters throughout the whole ... Shopping at the same grocery store implies that both of the women are well off economically and are not necessary struggling. This acquaintance counteracts the previous theory that Twyla was black and Roberta was white because both women were shopping at rich stores. Contradicting meetings like these happen throughout the short story and Morrison manipulates the contrasting details of the races' to make the reader befuddled during the conclusion of the story. Even by the fourth encounter, the women's races cannot be defined. Twyla and Roberta see each other at a picketing riot for forced integration of busing in Twyla's hometown of Newburgh, NY. Interestingly, these stores are not Nordstroms ' predominant competitors. Because Nordstrom 's caters to a more expensive partiality, its main competitors include upscale department stores such as Bloomingdale 's and Saks Fifth Avenue. Within Nordstrom's marketing strategy, the emporium must strategize ways to discern itself from both the mid–scale department stores as well as the high–end ones. This is caused by all the processed, fatty, fried junk food that is easily accessible everywhere. The government must begin financing for healthier food in schools to promote healthier eating habits as well as making unhealthy foods less accessible and healthy foods more accessible. In today's world, convenience is a necessity and as a result fast food joints are around every corner. In addition to fast food being easily available, it is promoted everywhere on media which is only encouraging our youth to eat more fast food, when they should be eating healthier. Instead of promoting fast food, a much more convenient option, the government and schools should be promoting healthier foods and healthier eating habits, which can be achieved through making fast food less accessible. In her article, "Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First Figuring Out Its Cause," Jane E. • 63. The Industrial Revolution Of The Middle Class Essay As the Industrial Revolution brought a rise of the middle class, a mass participation in the market emerged, thus a new system of trade was required. The concept of active buying was therefore transformed and passive shopping became the future. The new ways to shop became a revolution in itself, contributing to all aspects of consumerism, mass production and industrialisation in society. Defined by the Oxford Dictionary, consumerism is "the protection or promotion of the interests of consumers." The initial concern for building sales and providing ease for shoppers employed by department stores allowed the ability to develop a system of promotion. By applying a range of key methods concerning payment, customer service, target audiences, the atmosphere, and visual merchandise, businesses have been enabled to rapidly increase their sales since the introduction of the department store. Hence came a new model of consumerism, of which is still relevant in department stores to this day. Before the giant emporiums of the early department stores were introduced and window shopping was born, the consumer experience was far more direct in terms of purchasing goods. Shops and stalls would sell only one specific type of product or focus on a single service. For example, one would not typically find shoes in a store that specialises in selling homewares. This was originally designed for ease of the experience between both the merchant and the consumer. The merchants and craftsmen would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Humans heavily rely on them, however many homes are not sustainable, and leave negative impacts on the env2ironment. Eco houses have the potential to solve this issue, as they are defined as "a dwelling that uses materials and (perhaps) technology to reduce its energy needs and its impact on the environment" (Pullen, 2016). By using energy alternatives and sustainable designs, eco– houses are a much more practical and greener way of living, and will lead to a better future for our world. There are many forms of alternative energy sources that take the place of typical fossil fuels. One of the most common uses of these sources for eco houses is solar energy. Solar energy is when sunlight is converted into electricity for use, most commonly through solar panels. Solar panels are comprised of multiple photovoltaic cells, which absorb sunlight and transfer it into standard DC electricity. Photovoltaic cells are usually made of silicon, a semi–conductor (Roaf, 202). Solar panels are commonly installed on the roofs of houses where there is little blockage of the sun. This epidemic is affecting young adults from the ages 18–25 due to their new independent lives, and eating foods high in fats, sugars, and calories. • 79. Donut Emporium Case Summary Since Blinkie's Donut Emporium offers several different products, we decided to calculate the price elasticity of demand for their main product sold; donuts. Elasticity is determined by the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percent of change in the product price. The initial quantity demanded, being 5,000 sales a month later turned into 4,500 sales a month in response to the price change from $1 to $1.50. A $.50 cent increase in price led to a decrease in total quantity of donuts sold by 500. The percentage of change is a 50% increase in price along with a percent of change in quantity of –10%. Elasticity then becomes –10/50 giving us an elasticity of –.2, but since elasticity is always positive, the negative sign is disregarded. The number .2 elasticity is very close to being unitary elastic but still inelastic, meaning that the demand changes according to price at an almost equal rate. Therefore, we recommend that Blinkie's Donut Emporium does not raise or lower the price to enhance sales, but keeps the price the same. They can increase the price by a few cents, but we believe leaving the price as is can avoid the loss of regular customers from a practical standpoint. Pricing Strategy As a means to generate more sales and attract more potential customers, Blinkie's Donut Emporium uses third–degree price discrimination as their main pricing strategy. The story explores the relationship between Twyla and Roberta, and their experiences based on their racial differences. By decoding each characters racial identity, we can then understand how race defines a person's status in society. In analyzing the social cues such as culture, politics and economic signs, to identify the racial identity of Twyla and Roberta. I believe that Twyla is the white character and Roberta the black character. During the course of the narrative Twyla describes her on and off again relationship with Roberta. Neither of the girls were real orphans, and because of this they were alienated from the other girls, and they became friends real fast. Twyla's mother is assumed to be a stripper, while Roberta's mother was much too sick to care for her. With any story, the reader develops a visual image of each character. What one person see's another person may not, and is probably different from what the author originally envisioned. Typically the author provides physical descriptions of each character. • 91. Speech On Wealth And Wealth A lot of people want to achieve wealth and prosperity just for the money, not knowing that there are actually far more benefits to being rich than the riches themselves! If you make more money, you'll be privy to a world you never knew existed! Here are some of the factors that make up this exclusive enclave: 1. Wealth and prosperity allows for generosity. Being rich does not have to equate to being selfish. In fact, if you make more money, you can be better equipped to be the most generous person you could ever be! You can donate to all the charities whose causes you believe in, or you can even set up your own charities and run them in your free time! Yes, you don't have to be rich to be generous, but having all that money certainly comes with the perks of being a good benefactor. So, if you have a lot of disposable income, dispose of them in the most humane way possible! 2. Wealth and prosperity allows for an excellent education. In order to earn mass profits from their movies, directors will change any storyline to create an easy to follow, action–filled success. The Lightning Thief novel, written by Rick Riordan, and The Lightning Thief motion picture provide excellent examples of how books are morphed into classic, money–making attractions. Even though The Lightning Thief book and movie both share main characters and settings, the book expresses more detail and educates the audience while the movie focuses more on action and convenience, allowing for more errors between plots. Action is one of many differences found between the book and the motion picture. The entire plot of the movie revolves around finding and fighting for the pearls of Persephone, but in the book, Percy, the main character, receives the pearls as a gift on behalf of his father for use in a time of trouble. The settings and opponents faced by Percy and his companions, Annabeth and Grover, are the same: Medusa at the Emporium, Hydra at the Parthenon replica, and the Lotus–eaters at the casino. However, the reward for winning in the book is survival, not a pearl as portrayed in the movie. Another example is the scene involving Hades' Minotaur. Percy is not an experienced fighter at the beginning of the book; therefore, Percy faints after taking one of the Minotaur's horns. The movie illustrates Percy as a potentially skilled hero in ... The very bench that he envisioned Disneyland on can be found inside the park on Main Street. The Happiest Place on Earth opened on July 17, 1955. The grand opening of Disneyland was a complete disaster. Opening day was supposed to be invitation only. However, many people forged and counterfeited the tickets. About 30,000 people squeezed through the gates that day. Nowadays, the park sees hundreds of thousands of people visiting the park each week. Japanese food is very much popular in Singapore. In Singapore, it is very common for office workers to eat out for lunch. "As of 2001, there are more than a hundred Japanese restaurants in Singapore, of which about one– third are sushi restaurants. This persistent feeling of dissatisfaction is suggested in Christopher Taggi's "95," in which the protagonist is discontent with his current life condition and keeps driving on the highway to look for better opportunities. This suggests that Hank's parents, like many people in modern society, will not find happiness because they live with insatiable desires and therefore will not get the feeling of satisfaction in their lives. The characterization of Hank himself also shows how people in the contemporary society always want more. For example, when Hank woke up from his dream about his socks, he realized that" nothing good or special or wonderful has happened to him." (7) This shows that Frank is idealistic and has superfluous expectations in life. Also, Hank has a nice girlfriend who cares about him and loves him, but he still thinks about how he would leave her even though there are no reasons for him to do so. When his girlfriend asks him if he was happy, he says, "Sometimes I am. Mostly, I guess I just feel like I can't be really happy. Just missing something important." (7) Another passage would be when his girlfriend asked him if he likes her, he answered:"sometimes I like you and maybe I think I even love you a little. And sometimes I hate you." (7) We can see that Hank is uncertain about his feelings for his girlfriend and if she is the person that he wants to be with. Those are typical examples of a person who is not sure about what he wants and believes that there is always something better waiting for him. Recitatif On Racial Essay Recitatif on Racial Racism or rather racial is a theme that clearly comes out and captures the mind of every reader upon reading the short story "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison. The short story starts by bringing two young girls Roberta and Twyla who meet one another in the children's orphanage. From the outset, it is clear that either of the girls is white or black. When the two girls were young, they were not conscious about the color of their skin, however, as they age; the contrast in personality brings about separation. The two articles by Bennet "Toni Morrison and the burden of the passing narrative" and Stanley "Maggie in Toni Morrison's Recitatif" plainly explains about Racism as brought out by Toni Morrison. However, they underestimate the status of the book by restricting the short story in its racial context. Therefore, my goal is to examine racism in a different perspective rather than what the two readers weighed. Racial in the book can be used to decode racial identity in the story. At first, the two major characters are formed by their racial differences and Morrison doesn't disclose which girl is black and which girl is white. To be able to decode the ... • 128. How Does Morrison Use Direct Characterization In Recitatif Two women. One black, one white. Separated not by their race, but by their character. This idea is found throughout the short story "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison. "Recitatif" follows the story of the protagonist, Twyla, and her encounters with her childhood orphanage roommate, Roberta. In the beginning of the story, Morrison makes it clear that Twyla and Roberta are of different races, but never actually states which race each one is, which greatly enhances the characterization and meaning of the story. This forces the reader to interpret the thoughts and actions of the characters without the social stigma behind the color of a person's skin and question why the author chose to handle the characterization in this way. Throughout the course of the story, Morrison is very meticulous with characterization. By purposefully withholding the race of Twyla and Roberta, the reader is forced to define the characters through more than just their skin color. As a result, the reader learns more about Twyla's character through direct and indirect characterization. For example, during Twyla's encounter with Roberta at Howard Johnson's Morrison writes, "Maybe she didn't want to be reminded of St. Bonny's or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
