The Art of Decision-Making: Navigating Complexity and Uncertainty
Question 4
1. Question 4 How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
2. During the construction and research of our media product, we used different technologies mostly for creative purposes – discussing what different cameras we could use for the video, how we would edit it and so on. For the research, we talked about how our audience members would have interactivity with new technology, they could play music videos on their iPhones for example.
3. For the planning stages, I definitely used technologies of being able to communicate with each other, from group texting to e-mails using our smartphones. This was particularly useful for the organisation of planning filming dates and sharing ideas with each other. Plus, we actually incorporated our smartphones by having one being used in a shot in our video. In the evaluation stages, I don’t think we used technology much, apart from using different mediums of presentation like Prezi to present our work.
4. In the production of our work, I don’t think technological determinism was much of a problem because it didn’t control everything we did, however if the technology wasn’t working for example, camera’s failed or Photoshop didn’t work– the production process would have been made more difficult. I think we controlled the technology skilfully in what we wanted to do, by using the equipment correctly for the production of the video and we knew how to use the editing software to our advantage we could be more creative with it. With my print production, I think there was definitely some technological determinism in the fact I wasn’t very skilled with Photoshop and it did limit me creatively and the process was made longer.
5. The relationship between creativity and new media technology is that the technology allows you to be more creative in what you produce by providing you with the better resources and mediums to create with. For example, if I was to simply draw my print production rather than having the technology to create it in Photoshop, it simply wouldn’t look as good. Also the globalisation of new technology has allowed creative processes to be shared by others more easily, like uploading videos to Youtube.
6. I think I have used Media 2.0 to push my work in new directions by making my product an independent media project and rejecting the ideas of celebrating ‘classic’ conventional or ‘avant garde’ texts, and by using DIY media such as Youtube and mobile devices. I also think I’ve not used the conventional research methods into my product and that I’ve focussed more on the creative processes.
