Question 4
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research,
planning and evaluation stages?
“That’s Technology and methods that support
human communication over distances in time
and space.” MultimediaDreamWiki
Media technologies refers to the various platforms/software and digital
technology used within media, media being;
• “The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and
the Internet) regarded collectively in a medium” google definition
Research
In the first stages of this coursework year I carried out research to which I would use in
planning the product. Using The internet I analysed a range of music videos through
YouTube, an internet based online streaming site. This allowed me to access a range of
successful artists music and music videos for free. It enabled me to develop my
understanding of conventions, learn my music of preference and ultimately chose a song I
wanted to base my work around. Watching videos that have been very successful in the
industry helped me a lot in developing my own product and logging the techniques of
camera work/editing used so I can try and replicate it in my own music video.
Furthermore I created numerous PowerPoint documents on Microsoft Office, a software
application, that documented my opinions on my research and background information on
the Artists song I am using. The band Area 11 met a specific genre and style which I would
need to grasp in order to produce synergy of my own which follows similar themes
(continuity). Using this meant I could refer to my documents when producing the product
for hints and pointers to what designs and styles I should achieve. overall leading to a
more focused and well developed product which appeals to the target audience.
Research
In order to understand the public preference I developed a series of questions on a
online survey which I constructed myself. The Quantative survey made on Survey
Monkey allowed me to add questions that concern me and if I'm unsure what to do
in a certain area of coursework. Getting a unanimous decision on elements I cant
decide on helped me to realise what I should plan or do to make a quality product.
Once finished creating my Survey I used my own Social media sites to advertise the
questionnaire to the public on these sites. Having access to a range of social media
sites enables me to target more people and get the results of more citizens. More
results means more accurate and reliable data and the more people who take part
will also suggest other ideas by leaving a note.
In addition to Audience research we also using audio recording equipment and
Adobe Premier (a video editing software) was able to develop an YouTube video
talking to members of the public. We sourced 2 people who was willing to respond
to our questions and gave feedback. The audio equipment meant we could log the
whole conversation and make a visual video that involved visuals and sound on it. It
developed my creative skills using various types of media and combining then
together. Doing this not only presents my work better but also gave me a flavour of
using the software applications available to me in preparation for designing and
making the actual product.
Planning
Part of our planning involved actually as a group come up with ideas/thoughts and opinions
on what we would produce. For the purpose of remembering all our ideas we jotted notes
down on paper and discussed. The discussion that followed was recorded on my phone app
‘smart record’ and uploaded into the computer system. Using Audio converter I successfully
changed the audio file and uploaded it into my blog for the general viewer to listen to. This
is vitally important to our product as a large majority of the ideas and planning was
developed through word of mouth. By doing this we can look back at what we said, put it
into practice and have access to the first steps. At first I didn’t know how to convert audio
files and embed them into my blog however learning this has improved my creative skills
vastly. I recognise how to do this in the future and feel I have a well developed style of using
digital technology now.
In the early stages of the planning process I constructed a Storyboard of events which
covered shot types, camerawork, length of shots and a hand drawn image of what the shot
should capture. Despite being made using pencil and paper we used a premade document as
a guideline and then uploaded the storyboard into a computer version. Using A photocopier I
attempted to Scan the 40 pages and sent the copy to my email. Now I was able to view the
Storyboard through digital technology. This was very beneficial because I can now produce
numerous copies of the document (was very helpful when out in the field filming) for all the
group members to have. Furthermore I can now publish the storyboard on my blogging site
which is vital in showing my music videos progress, development and origin.
Planning
A large chunk of our planning involved evaluating and collection props, location
analysis and preparing a shortlist. Using Microsoft office I developed a series of
PowerPoint presentations and word documents that was uploaded onto my blog via
HTML. Generally using PowerPoint means I can present my work using a creative
application that allows me to use animation, designs and plenty of colour features.
This is much more interesting to read information from and also helps me to
remember thing easier being a visual learner. The PowerPoint system allows me to
embed a sires of images which was very helpful when describing a location and its
qualities and props.
During planning I used a DSLR camera (cannon 300D) to capture various images
relating to the advertisement production. We needed to get some good quality
images relating to our music video narrative to use on our advertisement and
Digipak. I Decided to experiment with different locations, props and camera settings
which ultimately provided us with a great level of understanding to what would suit
our product best. Firstly I got to use a camera similar to the ne we would be using in
filming so had time to adjust myself to understanding its controls and filters. This
meant I could be more resourceful when we started the Filming process. And
secondly we analysed the images captured in the experimental process and made a
decision based on what suits our product the best to what pictures we will take in
the future.
A large amount of our work involved the use of software application adobe
Photoshop. Two products of the promotional package (Digipak and Advertisement)
required me to use this Photoshop and exploit its qualities in still imagery
production. This application is the best to use for this as it provides a wide range of
editing features and techniques while also giving you the option to manipulate your
own digital images and pictures my hand. In the advertisement I used the software
to add filters onto the chosen image of the background, change its saturation and
shadowing. This helped me to develop a picture to the mood I want the audience to
feel when looking at it, and also shows I can enhance the qualities of an image and
adapt it to what is needed for it to look exciting and professional. In addition I using
fonts and filters to get information onto the picture needed to have a good
advertisement.
Construction
The same applies for the digipak where I used Adobe Photoshop in producing
this element of my coursework. Likewise as covered above the application
allowed me to do all the editing I required however in addition I was able to do
the same with numerous images. Photoshop also enabled me to accurately
construct the template using precise guideline tools which meant my product
met the standards required and had a professional outlook.
Construction
The music video was captured using a cannon camera and created using the
very unique digital application known as Adobe Premier. Premier is specifically
designed to produce film using existing video footage ,Music content and newly
developed video footage. Premier allowed us to download the soundtrack of
our chosen song and then apply the film captured during filming day. The
application Also helped me deciphering the parts of video I wanted to use and
the other bits I would leave out. This was possible as Premier lets yourself edit
and crop your film to what you require. The software was extremely helpful
despite being incredibly complex and allowed me to construct a well designed,
professional music video that competes with other music videos developed by
leading musicians and professional companies.
In order to actually finish my music videos purpose, I used the media
technology Known as YouTube, An online digital application that is vastly
known for being a video hosting service. Its used by millions globally and the
best way to get my music video out to the public eye is by using this service.
Big music industry companies such as VEVO publish Music videos regularly so
likewise I have too. By keeping to current convention I hope it has the same
effect at being a successful link that the public enjoy.
Evaluation
Throughout the Coursework Process I have been regularly updating and developing
An Online Blogging site called Wordpress. Wordpress has captured All the elements
of work I have done and been a means of storage too. Using All my Coursework
content on Wordpress I was able to then Evaluate all my Research, planning and
production work from one core area/site. In the Evaluation process I used a variety
of applications such as multiple Microsoft office apps, these were Word, Publisher
and PowerPoint. All these systems offer the chance to write up and present Content
in a way which is informative and appealing. I decided to use a Varity so it showed I
could use a rage of software for the same purpose and it would also be more
engaging for any reader to read information conveyed in different ways.
Another key reason for using Wordpress in this whole process was that it gives you
the option to embed multiple link and images. Meaning I could get all of my
evaluation ,planning ,research and production work into one single area. Wordpress
was also used individually because it also features its own blogging/post system
meaning I can put text and images not only embedding links. The Wordpress
software was really easy and straight forward to use meaning it was a no brainer
when deciding to use this.
