Summary Of A Separate Peace By John Knowles
In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, many things are shown about friendship. It shows us
how friendship is not always easy and how jealousy, competition and irrational thinking can disrupt a
seemingly strong and secure friendship. On the surface of Gene and Finny s friendship, it seemed that
they were the best of friends and that they did not have any problems. But, all of this changed with
time as most things do. Gene explains, we were best friends at that moment (page
18). This foreshadows how their seemingly extraordinary friendship is going to change. A common
feeling Gene has towards Finny is jealousy. Finny is an athletic, charismatic, and smooth boy who
seems to be able to get out of just about any situation he is put in. ... Show more content on

Along with Gene s newfound thinking, he also begins to act differently. After the accident, Gene
isolates himself. Gene explains, I spent as much time as I could alone in our room, trying to empty my
mind of every thought, to forget where I was, even who I was (page 62).
This quote represents the change in Gene s behavior. Before he was always out with his group of
friends, and now he isolates and tries to forget himself. In friendship, communication of these
thoughts are necessary. But, at Devon this form of communication is frowned upon. For example,
Gene says, exposing a sincere emotion nakedly like that at the Devon School was the next thing to
suicide (page
48). Gene is explaining how expressing emotions is not something that happens at
Devon. Suppression of this much emotion leads to built up feelings later causing Gene to express
these feelings in unpredictable ways later causing Phineas to fall off the tree. A Separate Peace shows
a lot about friendship. Throughout the novel, the reflection of friendship is commonly displayed. It
shows that friendship is not easy. It also shows how jealousy, competition, irrational thinking can twist
and turn solid relationships between

Unit 4 Case Quality Metrics
Case Quality Metrics The following metrics have been developed by NERC and vetted with industry
review through the NERC Planning Committee and NERC System Analysis and Modeling
Subcommittee (SAMS). Phase I Steady State Powerflow Metrics Dispatched generator real power
output should not exceed the maximum real power capability of the unit (Pgen = Pmin). Note:
Although small violations of this Pmin rule appear trivial, the result is same for all violations the case

However, this flag is seldom used in the WECC base cases. Therefore, to eliminate wind units from
the reactive limits check (Qgen at Qmax or Qmin), the dynamics data file has to be loaded and the
corresponding dynamic models have to be checked. The units with the any of the following wind
generator models were eliminated from the check: genwri, gewtg, gewtgx, regc_a, wt1g, wt2g, wt3g,
and wt4g. The names of the dc exciter models differ between PSS®E and PSLF. Hence, for the check
on parameter KE in dc exciters, the following models were checked in PSLF: esdc1a, esdc2a, esdc3a,
esdc4b, exdc1, exdc2, exdc2a, exdc4, ieeet1, and rexs. PSLF has generator MVA base specified in
both the powerflow file and the dynamic data file. All dynamic data is then taken on the per unit MVA
base specified in the dynamic data file. In PSS®E, there is only one value of MVA base specified, and
that is in the powerflow file. In the evaluation of the metrics regarding generator inertia constants for
the WECC base cases (using PSLF); the inertia constant has been evaluated on the MVA base
specified in the powerflow file, unless the specified base was the default 100

Pro Life Vs. Pro Choice
Medical Ethics

Pro Life v. Pro Choice
The word abortion can be defined as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12
weeks of gestation. The debate on abortion has been widely contemplated for centuries. Mainly
focusing on whether or not it is morally acceptable for a woman to decide if she can terminate the
pregnancy. The act of abortion only justifies that a woman should have the right to exercise her moral
ethics with her best interest in mind. One of the most important cases that caught the eyes of many
American people was Roe v. Wade. This particular case set the stage for women with their fight for
feminism and their legal rights about being able to have options once they realize that they are
pregnant, as well as having their personal privacy. The other aspect of this controversial topic is if
someone is pro life or pro choice. Typically when a woman decides to proceed with the abortion, they
progress with what they believe is the best intention for the child and for themselves. Both sides have
very legitimate reasons as to why one could be better than the other, but in the end, it is up to the
woman in hopes that she does what is in the best interest of herself, as well as the child she is carrying.
In 1973, the state of Texas was hit like a storm with one of the most controversial cases. Roe v. Wade
was one of the first major abortion cases that Texas had ever experienced. In agreement with Keown,
Roe was a radical

Reflection On Conflict Theory
In this class, the idea of Conflict Theory was brought up very early on. I really enjoy the concept and
find it incredibly useful when considering complex topics. Conflict theory, which was originally a
concept in which Karl Marx is largely attributed, theorizes that conflict arises due to limited resources
and the competition to secure those resources. The theory says that as long as there is a limit on how
much of something there is (and since we all live on a giant ball that has a set amount of every
resource, there always will be), then there will be people who fight to have control of it. For me, I find
this theory in action everywhere, and I routinely use it as a logical deduction tool to deduce the
underlying motivations of those around me.
Whenever I see something strange happening around me, the first thing I do is ask myself: Who
profits from this? How do they profit? Why would they do that? After that, I ask myself who else
would want whatever is in question. For example, if I was asked to find a root cause for the ongoing
conflict in the middle east, I would ask who benefits from it. Once I do that, I would probably find that
a very large portion of the U.S. economy is derived from the import and export of petroleum, which is
highly abundant in the area. In fact, if the U.S. were to lose the oil imported from the middle east, then
disastrous wouldn t even come close to describing the economic turmoil that would ensue within the
United States. From this, I would undoubtedly conclude that the U.S. ( some other European
countries) are guilty of destabilizing the region in order to secure rights over their oil.
But this theory does not just apply to global issues. The idea of conflict applies everywhere, from
knowing what a possible future employer wants to hear, to understanding how much you are paying at
the register when you go grocery shopping. In fact, both of these ideas had a large impact on how I
landed my first job.
When I was in high school, seniors were required to participate in a 200 hour internship at local
businesses in order to graduate. It was during this time that I got an interview at a company known as

Parapsychic Abilities Research Paper
If I could pick one superhuman ability, I would pick the ability to be parapsychic. Having psychic
abilities does it all: psychokinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition.
I would have endless, infinite knowledge. I would be able to breach human conscience and delve deep
into the pits of human thinking. I could harbour the entirety of human intelligence into my own little
mind. Maybe this foreshadows imminent doom. But I cannot help but be tempted by all these what ifs
. What if I knew all the most powerful secrets of the world? What if I could move human
relationships, for better or for worse, with just a single word?
People say knowledge is power but with great power comes greater responsibility. I could stop wars
with this ability, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would hold the lives of billions in my hands, and I could crush those lives with the slightest twitch.
That sheer power is so distant, it is almost unimaginable. For to have all the knowledge of the world
would mean to be like God, would it not? I could be benign, or I could be cruel, and absolutely
nothing could stand in my way. That absolute freedom of will is what attracts me, what drives me to
choose this ability. I could be anyone, do anything.
But I would not be free from conscience. Would conscience allow me to execute these selfish
pleasures? These unthinkable deeds? I take back what I said, for conscience of mind is the highest
power. It masters all, and all minds suffer great pain at the caprice of this thing. And if I were to have
all these powers, yet have nothing at the same time no purpose, no love, what good would these
powers do me?
So with these powers I would enjoy life s little gifts. Enjoy the humour presented to me by the
oblivious ignorance of those around. Play small games on people, watch them go around in circles,
confused, then return to their usual routine of stupefaction. I could do harm to mankind, yet I would
not. I would choose to live out my days in obscur

Banning Book
Should books be banned? Books are a gateway to a world of imagination, but some schools are trying
to shut those gates off by banning them. Books are some of the best teachers left, it s not up to a
school to decide what a child should or should not read. Banning books can deprive a child of the
opportunity to think. Books should not be banned because of the lessons they can teach, the fact that a
school should not even be able to ban them, and it can deprive a child of the opportunity to think.
Books are some of the best teachers we have they teach us vocabulary social skills and new ways of
thinking (leigh). It s also true that textbooks could teach a child this, but not in the way they would
learn from a story. When a child is really engaged in a story they will learn a lot more than they think.

It is reasonable for a book to be banned if it is just not suitable for children as in its mature content.
But if a book is being banned because of a parent who does not like the book or thinks it is a touchy
subject, then it is just not reasonable and there should not even be a discussion about banning it.
Parents who don t like specific books can have their kids opt out of an assignment without infringing
on the rights of others. (www.procon.org/headline.php?headlineID=005365). There is no reason for a
parent to try to have a book banned because they do not like the content in the book. Also, the parent
can choose to have their child not read the book without having it banned from the whole school.

The Benefits Of Community Gardening
Another aspect of community gardening, is regarding those who participate in it. Community gardens
can be seen in many cities, with the community coming together to grow produce and relationships
along the way. However, it is becoming a growing trend to start this idea at a younger scale. Many
schools across North America have started implementing a garden into their after school or
extracurricular programs. By introducing gardening to children at a young age allows for them to take
in many of the benefits that come from gardening, and encouraging new ways of engagement.
Gardening provides many hands on activities for children, including designing, planting, and
harvesting the food (Yost, 2009). Many studies have shown that children who take care of a garden, or
live near one, are more likely to show an interest in gardening as they grow up and develop a strong
relationship with gardens and trees (Lohr, 2005).
In California, school gardens have become very popular and are continuously promoting them through
the State s Education Department. An example of one of the schools in the state is Le Conte
Elementary School, which not only has flowers and vegetables, but also livestock, like goats and
chickens. The science curriculum at the school is very inclusive with gardening activities, such as
propagation, transplanting, and composting (Ferris, 2001).
There have been many studies on the effects of school gardens on children. They have shown that

Assess The Causes Of Child Poverty
Child poverty is not just something that poorer countries have to deal with, it is a world wide issue
involving even the richest countries, where the disparity between rich and poor can be worse than in
developing countries. This essay will examine some of the key causes of child poverty as well as the
impacts on society. The reality of child poverty in the UK is that some families living on a low income
and have only about £13 per day per person. (Barnardo s online 2015). With this in mind, many people
may well have met, or know, families that are below the UK poverty line.
Child poverty is defined as any group of people, or individuals, who are unable, through lack of
money, to adequately feed themselves. They may not be able to afford suitable clothing or provide
themselves with suitable heated accommodation. Child poverty can cause serious problems for
children. For those in poverty it means being cold, hungry and often not being able to join activities
with friends or activities that cost money, such as bowling, going to the cinema, swimming or other
interests and pursuits. In addition, 60% of families on the lower incomes cannot afford to take their
children on holiday for one week a year. (Child Poverty Action Group online 2015). ... Show more

money, items such as clothing, toiletries and replacing broken household items such as the washing

Karl Marx And Karl Polanyi
Adam Smith, Karl Marx and Karl Polanyi are writer of capitalism, that have influenced capitalism in
different ways to making capitalism what it is today. Adam Smith known as the father of the political
economy, developed the concept of the invisible hand; which explains how self interest and
competition in a free market economy, would allow economy prosperity. Another concept Smit
developed is division of labour which say that jobs a business should be specialised, instead of one
person having to carry out all the processes. Karl Marx, on the other hand, demonstrates to us the
negative impact of the capitalist system upon workers and society in general. As Marx believed that
workers gain nothing, instead get exploited by the capitalist who ... Show more content on

However, critics of the invisible hand say that it is not as strong as it was in the time of Smith, due to
large powerful cooperation, effective marketing system and inefficient financial market blocks the
mechanism of the invisible hand which does not allow the scare resources to be used at their best use.
An example is of the invisible hand in works is, say if a candle maker sells one candle stick for £1 but,
another candle maker sells 3 sets of candles for £2, it would mean he would get all the business
making the other candle maker lose out and make even run out of business. So, to compensate the lose
the candle marker would be forced lower his prices to survive and not get out of business, therefore,
the candle maker is guided by the invisible hand being his self interest to gain profit to lower his
prices.
Division of labour another, one of Adam Smith s concepts explains that productive power of workers
would increases each worker would have a specialised job to carry out and in turn would allow
increase number of output to be produced. Smith further, says that division of labour is not something
that is regulated by an authority, instead it is human nature. As what make us human is our propensity
to truck, barter and exchange items, which gives us assurance to be able to trade what we have
produced goes on to encourage division of labour.
Smith gives 3 reasons as to why division of labour increase s productivity. First, division

The Security Issues Revolving Around Wireless Networks
Introduction
Wireless computer networks have become very common in the past several years. The convenience
with which computer users can utilize internet connections, without having a network cable attached
to their computers, makes wireless networks extraordinarily popular in today s on the go society.
Homes, offices, and public businesses (e.g., hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.) all frequently have
active wireless computer networks. As is the case with hard wired computer networks, security is very
important in wireless networking environments, even more so because one is not physically connected
to the network. This paper will examine many of the security issues revolving around wireless
networks, as well as ways to protect such networks from vulnerabilities and attacks.
Motivation
A hacker who wishes to break into or eavesdrop onto a wireless network may possess one or more of
the following motives for attempting such action:
Challenge
Greed
Malicious intent
The challenge motive involves an individual breaking into a system simply to gain access or proceed
beyond a barrier, without causing any actual harm or stealing or destroying data. A challenger may
typically brag to his or her friends about successfully penetrating a system, in a way expressing a
sense of accomplishment. Greed involves a desire to gain something from the attack. Credit card
numbers, bank accounts numbers, passwords, and classified trade secrets are just a few examples of

Effects Of The Quebec Act On The American Revolution
There has been lots ups and downs before during and after the Quebec act. It is clear that The Quebec
Act was the tipping point between the 13 Colonies and Great Britain ultimately causing the American
Revolution.
The Quebec act was a British act of bribery for immense from the French. This started in 1774 when
the 13 colonies started to wonder if they still needed the British. The British could tell that some of
them felt they were un needed to be in charge so they decided to start the Quebec Act. This act had a
good affect on the british while it lasted then the colonists got mad. The 13 Colonies were very angry

Timmermans: Evidence based medicine and the reconfiguration of medical knowledge.
EBM or evidence based medicine is a form of protocols used to standardize diagnoses and treatment
plans. In this journal we learn details about the four medical professionalization theories and we also
learn what Timmermans believes to be the downfalls of those theories. The effects of EBM on the
medical profession are stated as being the fact that medicine shifts from pathophysiology to
epidemiology with guidelines, these guidelines seem to interfere with the autonomy of the practitioner.
There are three questions that the journal is interested in evaluating. The first question has to do with
whether the epistemological characteristics of medicine are more ... Show more content on

One of the major downfalls of EBM according to Upshur are the time constraints that depersonalize
the doctor patient interactions by forcing the doctor ask a barrage of questions which are necessary to
follow protocol; this takes away from the potential of the clinician to practice active listening since
there is a limit on the time allotted per patient interaction. Another limitation is that the clinical trials
on which EBM are based on have specific patent characteristics, most of which do not have multiple
illnesses in order to eliminate confounding variables. These patients are very different than the real
world patients that have multiple illnesses and are taking various medications. In addition, there are
very few clinical trials that include the elderly population since the trials usually want otherwise
healthy people with a single diagnosis. Another problem relating to the randomized control trials is
that they still do not tell you exactly what will work for your patient but rather what may work, this is
seen as having little difference between how the practitioner can diagnose a patent. In all this article
argues that the limited access to technologies and the standardized patient presentations used for the
clinical trials actually impedes the ability of the EBM to be effective for all

Phonological Awareness Strategies
Phonological awareness strategies play a vital role in the development of vocabulary and word
consciousness. It is a sound structure of language that is, that language is made up of words, syllables,
rhymes, and sounds (phonemes) (Phonological Awareness). This awareness of sounds in a spoken
language is a strong indicator of future literacy success. Strategies to promote phonological awareness
provide opportunities to help students to hear and differentiate and segregate sounds in their oral
language. Emergent learns can better discern rhymes and alteration and understand sounds through
syllables. Furthermore, segregating words through onsets rimes patterns, and learning how to blend
sounds through phonemic awareness all play a vital role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teach relationships of sounds and letters with bingo games. Upon mastery students will learn letter
sound relationships for consonant sounds.
5. Teach how to sound out words through decoding with onsets rimes patterns in a game of water
balloon phonics. Students will throw water balloons that are labeled with rimes and throw them at
onsets to make a word. On rainy days this game can be modified to a ring toss.
Each strategy is intended as a pre teaching activity, large group or small anticipatory set, or as closure
activity in a lesson plan. These strategies are to pique young readers interests prior to intensive
teaching.
Part 2 Students that are rely on sight words lack decoding skills. Their focus is on the image of a word
and not the sounds of the individual letters create or its relationship to words. It is a dangerous
pedagogy because it creates cognitive damage such as dyslexia and ADHD (Price). The practice of
using sight words promotes lower syntactical awareness, guessing and students become word callers;
students are not comprehending what they are reading, just decoding. However, sight words serve
their purpose for words that do not follow phonic rules in emergent readers. Nonetheless, as a child
strengthens their oral language concept through print, and phonemic awareness more reliable
predictions of reading abilities in the future can be made. Phonological awareness is the understanding
of different ways that oral language can be divided into smaller components and manipulated (Chard

The person I m reflecting on is Emily Dickinson, a famous poet from New England. Emily Dickinson
was born in 1830 in New England. Her natural first skills were cooking and sewing, but attended a
boarding school would change a lot. Emily was different from her family and had a different outlook
on life. Her love life was nothing, but shameful when guy after guy ended up cheating, leaving her, or
even dying. After that, Emily decided to stay inside her home for the rest of her life and not deal with
social life at all. She only communicated with flowers and poems she would often write to closest

Eventually her own health began to decline and the eloquent and mysterious poet knew her time was

Moore Vs Hlobo
This essay will explore the contrasts and similarities that can be taken from two drawings. Henry
Moore s, Standing figures of 1940 and Nicholas Hlobo s, Macaleni Iintozomlambo of 2010. It will
discuss the comparisons that can be made about the colour schemes, composition and subject matter
of the pieces. This will also include an evaluation of how the time scales and influences of the period
have affected the final outcomes of the two artists. The two pieces actually share many more
similarities than first hits the eye after deconstructing all of the components listed.
Henry Moore is typically renowned for the many sculptures mused by the human form, typically the
female form. He began his artistic venture in 1919 where he attended Leeds School of art, here he met
Barbra Hepworth and was inspired greatly by her. He then received many scholarships leading to the
opportunity to travel around the world, it was early Mexican and Aztec that mostly inspired his work.
His first commissioned piece was in 1928 and named West Wind. In order to create his pieces he did
however create unfinished drawing plans of organic compositions that he could imagine creating to a
much larger scale. These were often many drawings to a page that overlapped showing the spontaneity

seen as the victims of the negative effects of tourism while the tourists seen as the perpetrators of the
crime; bringing their culture and values and imposing them on the host societies. While these
generally accepted stereotypical thoughts may be true in some instances, it is however misleading to
hold these notions regarding the changes in the social and cultural aspects of a society. Whereas socio
cultural changes may in part be due to tourism, it can also be due to other modernization and global
factors such as international trade relations, military actions, migration etc (Sharpley R. and Telfer D.,
2002).
Concerning tourism development, the socio cultural changes which occur in the community are more
often than not seen as negative, with the positive contributions been underplayed or totally ignored.
Though it is difficult to measure the influence of tourism on socio cultural changes, the extent of the
impact can be determined by the change in value and logic system, religious beliefs, tradition,
lifestyle, behavioural patterns, etc (Inskeep, 1991). The relationship between tourism development and
social and cultural characteristics of a society is non linear; as well as negative effects, tourism
development can also have

Descriptive Experience Essay
A bright array of lights dotted the dark landscape beneath the plane where I sat It was late, around
midnight, and the day had stretched beyond measure beginning with customs in the Atlanta airport.
About 1:30 a.m. we landed in the airport at San Jose International Airport. I was exhausted but the
beauty of the landscape would be only a shimmer of what was to come. The second I stepped off of
the plane I felt anxious and hot, very hot. This being my first time outside of the United States was a
completely new experience and everything was foreign to me. After we retrieved our bags from the
baggage claim we headed out and were promptly picked up by a bus which carried us out of the city
of San Jose, Costa Rica through mountains and jungle and delivered us to our cabins where we would
be staying for the week. After a combined sixteen hours of travel we were here. As we stood on top of
what seemed to me to be a mountain overlooking the city I was taken aback I have never seen
anything like it. It was amazing. The next morning we woke up as early as 5:00 a.m. to get ready for
what was to be a long day. Each morning we would travel to a church where we would hold a worship
service and eat breakfast, after each breakfast and worship service we would go off to our respective
places where we would work with a construction team building a basecamp for the ministry we were
helping or we would go out and minister at the schools in the local area. We spent most of the first day

Bine Watching Show Analysis
Everyone has experienced boredom, whether it be waiting for something, stuck in school, or just
nothing to do. Fortunately for tedious students, binge watching provides a glorious solution to
boredom. According to a small poll conducted among Thomas Jefferson students, the top 10 binge
watching shows are Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, Grey s Anatomy, Orange is the New
Black, the Walking Dead, It s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Office, Parks and Rec, Breaking Bad,
and American Horror Story. Such shows have grown in popularity for many reasons due to their
humor, intensity, award winning actors and much more.
With the 2016 year now upon us, the time has come to watch tv. Leading the pack, Modern Family has
been raved upon for being a hilarious family comedy. First airing in September 2009, the
mockumentary now has seven seasons featuring the lives of Jay Pritchett and his family, all of whom
live in suburban Los Angeles. With a similar light hearted feeling and mockumentary style, The Office
and Parks and Rec both have received a great deal of popularity since premiering. Following the
everyday lives of the office employees in Scranton, Pennsylvania, The Office is perceived as a laugh
out loud, goofy comedy. Through the life of a mid level bureaucrat in an Indiana Parks and Recreation

Southern Culture And The Circumstances Of The War
Southern culture and the circumstances of the war fostered an environment where military officials
who could distinguish themselves, especially those with values that most coincided with the ideal
southern man, were set up to become the mythologized figures that would eventually become central
to southern history. Jackson and Lee, through their own skill sets and actions during the war, solidified
their respective legacies as a martyr and a leader. In 1861, Jackson was promoted as brigadier general
in the Army of Northern Virginia, where he began to distinguish himself in the following battles. He
gained Lee s trust and as a result, held a fair amount of control over command (Fredriksen). Jackson
gained most of his fame during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862, where he employed his
signature tactic of hard, forced marches that attempted to outwit the Union ( Robert E. Lee ). Jackson s
strategy was to Always mystify, mislead, and surprise the enemy, if possible ( Stonewall Jackson ). He
believed that despite having smaller numbers, the Confederacy could defeat the Union in battle if they
act aggressive and communicate well ( Shenandoah Valley Campaign ). These tactics promoted him as
the most well regarded military general during the war. In the eyes of many southerners, he was their
best hope of succeeding in battle, and his death at Chancellorsville in 1863 deeply hurt the morale of
the Confederacy (Fredriksen). Lee, who was initially offered control of the Union

Case Study Of Robert Deal From Emory University
Robert Deal from Emory University is studying to learn about plants and their memory of stress.
When plants face dry weather, their stomata shrink to reduce water loss. When a similar situation
places the plants under stress again, the plant seems to recall this experience and recovers quicker.
Robert Deal, who studies genetics and biochemistry, hopes to utilize this trait and pinpoint its gene. If
he can locate and activate the genetic material associated with this memory, he believes he can speed
up the process and cause plants to have the gene activated at all times, allowing the plants to withstand
drier and warmer temperatures. Other researchers have been striving for a similar goal, using the
genetic material of plants to create new hybrids that can withstand extreme weather. Across the globe,
scientists have been making modified plant varieties that can resist drought, a growing concern as
climate change becomes a more prominent issue. One hybrid has already existed since 2011 on the
market. The corn plant, known as DroughtGuard, was bred to resist drought. It contains a gene from a
bacteria that allows it to produce in times of water shortage. This corn crop has been approved ...

Some worry that the farmers will become dependent on corporations that produce these genetically

genetic tinkering draws attention away from safer methods that also provide more produce, such as
crossbreeding. However, if the efforts to create crops resistant to drought are successful, humans will
be able to resist and adapt to climate change better. While it is important to learn to adapt to climate

Biography of Wyatt Earp Essay
Biography of Wyatt Earp
Wyatt Earp, born Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp, was born on March 19, 1848 in
Manmouth, Illinois to Nicholas and Virginia Earp. When Wyatt was two, his parents moved him
across the Mississippi River to Pella, Iowa. He was considered a great western lawman. His first
experience as a lawman was as a constable of Lamar, Missouri for four months in the year 1870. In
April, 1875, he was appointed to the Wichita Kansas police force only to be released from that job on
April 2, 1876 for insubordination. After that, Wyatt moved to Dodge City, Kansas where he served as
a police man three separate times. The first time he served from May 17 until September 9, 1876; the
second time he served was from July 6 until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A very historical event occurred soon after Wyatt took the detective job with
Wells, Fargo Company; the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. This event is very controversial even today.
According to the name of the event, the shutout occurred in the back entrance of the O.K. Corral. Yet,
according to the research that I have done, the shootout actually occurred about half a block over from
the O.K. Corral in the side yard of ex mayor William A. Harwood and from there it spread out into the
middle of Fremont
Street. Of course, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral sounds much better than the
Gunfight in Harwood s Yard and Fremont Street so I guess someone decided to change it. O.K. Corral
has much more of a Western ring to it. Personally, I think the
Gunfight in Tombstone sounds pretty good, but there s no point trying to change it now.
Virgil, Wyatt s older brother, was Tombstone s city marshal at the time of the shootout.
He was also a deputy U.S. marshal. At the time of the gunfight, Wyatt considered himself a
saloonkeeper, since he had a piece of the gambling winnings at the Oriental
Saloon. This event included four of the Old West s best known law enforcers and also some of the Old
West s best known villains . The three Earp brothers; Virgil, Wyatt and
Morgan all participated in the gunfight with Doc Holliday at their side. John Doc

The Pentagon Memorial has an emotive power that couple of different memorials have, because of
both the recency of the catastrophe it pays respect to and its exhaustive posting of victims. At the first

Remembrance is a Substantial Burden in the Book, The...
Remembrance; the mental impression on the brain from a certain event. Each soldier in the book, The
Things They Carried, experiences some sort of remembrance whether it be saddening or enlightening.
Remembrance is consistently perceived as the ability our brains have to go back and revisit moments
in time which either disturb us, or give to us a feeling of pure happiness. Its mere sound provokes
thought along with curiosity. Generally, when we are alone, surrounded by a nonchalant atmosphere,
our brain swirls with thoughts, taking us back to significant moments in our lives. These moments are
never forgotten, they are always there for some sort of reason. By means of these memories we can
continue to learn from our mistakes and better our lifestyle.
In Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried, he presents his view on remembrance. O Brien doesn t
necessarily see remembrance in its materialistic form, he believes it is not about the act of
remembering, but about the fact that one does not have the ability to forget these events, especially the
events he had experienced. His perspective is that seeing a plethora of violent deaths in war, are
moments which are utterly effortless to recall, however they may be extraordinarily difficult to bring
up with someone else perhaps who does not really understand the intentions. By telling stories, you
objectify your own experience. You separate it from yourself. You pin down certain truths. You make
up others. You start sometimes with an

Family And Love In Begin Again By John Carney
In the director John Carney s film, Begin Again, there are many elements that connect to the theme of
family, love, and most importantly, music. The main concept of the film is ending what happened in
the past and moving forward to a new start or a new beginning. As conflict arises amongst the
characters, they come to a crossroads of whether they should pursue their desired passions and love
interests. The main characters in the film express their love for family and relationship through music.
Music in the film is a way of communication with each other without having to actually come face to
face to discuss it. Music and family come in connection because add something to continue this
thought about family being connected through music. The film doesn t just focus on blood relation, it
also involves the relationship the music industry forms through their passion for music. In particular,
the film depicts broken familial relationships that are later mended through the realization of ones
mistakes.
In the film, Family means that no matter what happened in the past or in the present moment, it is
never too late to forgive and forget. The unconditional love that Dan has for Miriam proves that no
matter who is at fault of a break up, family still comes first. The body language seen in the film amid
the characters reveals their emotions to the audience. Facial expressions of concern, misery, and of
want, are worn by individuals throughout the production. The interactions that

Effects Of Christmas On American Culture
Since the beginning of globalization and the expansion of the large firms, several selling techniques
were developed. However, this gave birth to a fierce struggle between those companies that tear their
customers. This willingness to sell brings its advantages but can also be disadvantageous for the
culture of a society. This essay will approach the theme of the commercialization of Christmas by
demonstrating that in Quebec this event has become a commercial event and is less traditional and lost
its religious character and by explaining the effects on adults and children. As a matter of fact, with all
the publicities and the constant apparition of messages selling values and a new image of the culture
surrounding Christmas, the changing of adult s perception is inevitable and widely affected by
commercialization. Each year, the two months preceding Christmas are very important for TV shows,

How I Went from Aching Loneliness to Blissful Solitude
It was an aching solitude. I sat in silence, ensnared within my chaotic mind while everyone s elated
voices stretched across the classroom like a contagious disease but my immunity was too study to
catch a speck of it. I was never a big fan of change, especially ones that strike you without any
warning. The transition from elementary to junior high wasn t the challenging part for me, it was the
fact that I felt alone. It never occurred to me that everything was temporary, even friendships. Initially,
going into seventh grade was absolutely petrifying, nearly all my friends was in a different T.A., while
in the other hand, I was placed in a class filled with unfamiliar faces. Everyone appeared to be
recognizable to each other, I felt as if I was an outcast, just a girl at the back of the classroom. At that
time, the most bothersome traits about me was that I was shy, reticent, and anxious. I swore there must
have been something wrong with me, how hard could it be to approach another student and simply
talk or just plainly introduce myself. Although, I attempted to be as optimistic as I possibly could, I
would still be able to be with my friends at lunch, afterschool, or parties. Another part of me that was
incommodious was that I clung onto my friends, they truthfully were extremely supportive and
entertaining people to be around, I cherished each and every one of the our memories together but
sadly, we gradually drifted apart. Instantaneously, even on the first

Who Is Louis Riel National Hero
Louis Riel was a national hero, especially to the Métis of Canada. He defended his people, the Métis,
and their rights by creating Le Comité National des Métis and the provisional government at Fort
Garry. He showed the Canadian government that he is not a joke with the execution of Thomas Scott.
He contributed to the creation and government placed in Manitoba with the Manitoba Act. And he also
left, coming back with a new view and to attempt a peaceful negotiation.
Louis Riel went against the Prime Minister, John A. MacDonald, to get the Métis people the rights
they deserved. He seized Fort Garry with the National Committee of Métis as their leader. He did this
to set an example and show MacDonald just what he is capable of. Riel set up a provisional
government to replace the committee with himself as the leader, after refusing to take money to join
the USA. This is where the Métis wrote their List of Rights. Which were brought to MacDonald but

Critique of the Research In the vigorous challenge of the concept of whether children can freely assent
in research participations Hurley and Underwood (2002, p.2) indicated that children s competence to
assent relied too heavily on comprehensive developmental theories such as Piaget s, which imply that
the capacity to assent increases and risk of harm decrease with age. In any case, it is more difficult for
children to give free and meaningful assent when they did not truly understand the research concepts
(2002, p.2). Moreover, the viability of the study depended on the creation of a situation that was
ecologically valid in that it was provoking for children and required elements of deception (the other
person being an actor and the game being rigged such that participants would not win) and some risk
of emotional distress. Personally, I believe that the second graders might not have clearly understood
their participation responsibilities and accountabilities, in spite of the definitions given to them in the
research study and their capacity to understand to freely give and freely withdraw their assent before
and during the research process. The researchers could have used peer tutoring to enhance
understanding of the seemingly abstract research concepts to include risks, and effective meaning of

her sense of displacement, causes her to take flight in many situations she faces. Despite the fact that

her social displacement provides the most detrimental impact to the success of her character in the

Alice Walker s highly regarded and controversial novel, The Color Purple, has been the rage of film
circles since its big screen release in 1985. Steven Spielberg, director, chose Alice Walker s story of an
impoverished rural black community in the early twentieth century American South as his vehicle for
dramatic affirmation from his distorted reputation as a creator of popular youthful fantasies.
Consequently, he chose the perfect story for this transformation. The Color Purple depicts the tragic
lives of a dirt poor African American South and the dirt poor morals and values that coincided with

Modern-Day Vaccine Development Raising Eyebrows Essay
Introduction Vaccine development is an old and complicated process, often requires more than a
decade to complete. The modern system of vaccine development, regulation and testing was
developed during the 20th century. To engender a vaccine mediated immunization or protection has
been a major challenge. Presently available vaccines work primarily through the induction of the
antigen specific antibodies. The effectiveness of any vaccine is determined by the quality of the
antibodies, as their work pattern and avidity. For a long term effect through vaccines, the antibodies
should be persistent or generated immune memory cells should be capable of instantaneous response
in case of any microbial exposure. Lot of new methods has emerged ... Show more content on

Another big achievement was the recognition of complete genome of Haemophilus influenza in 1995;
which gave new directions to immunization. Vaccine Design and Development Development of
vaccines includes two broad stages. First stage covers laboratory and animal Studies including
recognition of appropriate antigens e.g. screening, creation of a vaccine concept, efficacy testing and
manufacturing of the vaccine at good standards. This stage may last for 1 2 years and often some
candidate vaccines cannot go beyond this stage due to the potential lack of immunity generation. After
this, the next step includes clinical studies on human beings. First a small group of humans are tested
with the vaccine, followed by a larger group, to assess the safety and extent of the immune response
that vaccine can provoke. Successful trial phases are followed by an approval and licensing procedure.
FDA approves the labeling of vaccine after satisfaction and inspection of the manufacturing unit.
Vaccines work through interrupting with innate or adaptive immunity as well as humoral immunity.
Immunity is a complex interplay of humoral and cellular immune factors, but the required amount of
antibody for defense against a pathogen is an important contemplation in vaccine development 3, 4.
Vaccines mediated protection Antibodies are specific vaccine induced immune effectors that are
produced by B lymphocytes, and have the capability to bind with toxin or a pathogen. Other latent

Functions of management The functions of management uniquely describe managers jobs. The most
commonly cited functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, although
some identify additional functions. The functions of management define the process of management as
distinct from accounting, finance, marketing, and other business functions. These functions provide a
useful way of classifying information about management, and most basic management texts since the

own, there can be a resulting sense of individual empowerment. This empowerment plays out as self
control. The self control then benefits the organization and increases the sense of worth to the business
in the individual.
Control can be done in, let´s say, two ways. The company has to decide between the traditional
bureaucratic and contemporary decentralized approaches. There is the third way which is hierarchical
control, but I think this one is using with bureaucratic and that´s why we set these two into one. These
approaches represent different philosophies of controlling and generally corporate culture. Traditional

Persuasive Essay On Gmo Farming
Genetically modified farming has become more of an issue in the agriculture and nutrition worlds over
the past ten years. The big question is, do the benefits of GMO farming outweigh the losses. GMO
corporations like Monsanto make business much harder for independent farmers, due to the cost
difference and efficiency of GMO farming, as well as other reasons. GMO farming can also save
funds and provide produce to a larger range of people. Genetically modified agriculture has an
especially strong effect on Hawaii state farmers. While there are benefits to GMO farming, there are
also many downsides.
Extra environmental damage occurs from GMO farming when compared to small scale farms. It takes
the same amount of time to grow and the same amount of money. GMO foods coincide with higher
food allergy levels in the population. Large GMO corporations cause small independent farmers to go
bankrupt or get sued for accidental seed crossing. There are many downsides to GMO farming, but it
can also be useful, genetic modifications can often provide a larger quantity of food to a ... Show more

GMO seeds often have vitamins and minerals added into them, supplying very necessary nutrients that
could be otherwise inaccessible to a portion of the population. Plants can also be genetically modified
to provide vaccines and proteins through pharming (pharmaceutical farming). GMO plants also often
have a longer shelf life, resulting in more time for transport and less food wasted. This process can
also have environmental benefits such as reduced pollution, erosion, and greenhouse gas emissions.
GMO plants and animals also need less machinery, time, and land, resulting in enhanced productivity.
The GMO debate is especially an issue in Hawaii, the remoteness of the islands would seem to make it
the perfect safe haven for unaltered crops, but the company Monsanto seems to think just the

Law Enforcement Provides Society With An Array Of...
Law enforcement provides society with an array of invaluable services that cannot be overlooked.
Law enforcement officers place themselves at considerable risk in order to protect the safety of others.
Moreover, these individuals are not prompted by financial incentives to enter this hazardous line of
work, but are instead motivated by the personal rewards and satisfaction that emanate from advancing
the interests of the commonwealth. However, in spite of their vast contributions, law enforcement
officers are capable of error and behaving unethically. For example, an officer may accidently commit
an infraction due to an oversight, or they may knowingly abuse their position of authority. Thus,
various protections have been afforded to the public as a defense against the violation of their rights.
The fourth amendment functions as a deterrent against police impropriety by establishing the
conditions under which an officer can perform a search. Overall, the vehicle search that was
conducted in the scenario was illegal; thus, any of the evidence that was seized would be inadmissible
in a court of law.
The Legality of the Search
Some of the actions of the other officer were warranted and they did initially act within the confines of
the law. Ultimately, the other officer did not arbitrarily decide to stop a vehicle. The registration of the
vehicle had been expired, which constitutes an offense; thus, the other officer did have legitimate
grounds to stop the vehicle. However,

Reflective Essay About My Mandala
During the past few weeks in Global Perspectives we explored our personal culture, and the influences
that shape it. Our task was to create a mandala: a circular set of symbols that convey the contrast
between the sun and shadow sides of our personality. While the sun side is the disposition other people
see, the shadow side captures unseen aspects of our personality. In this reflection, I further examine
how I embody the characteristic behind each symbol and how I came to possess this characteristic.
First, on the sun side (right), the uppermost symbol is a firecracker, which represents my exuberance.
Firecrackers are loud, colorful, and unpredictable. Being the youngest of my friends and family, I have
always been loud craving attention and achieved it through antics, similar to a firecracker exploding.
However, as exciting as some consider firecrackers, to some they are scary. My loud personality and
my never ending energy sometimes send the wrong impression, and I come off as a little hard to
handle. Though my family was part of the reason I wanted get attention, but I was the one would
would rather be noticed all the time, than blend in to the background, this is why I classify this as
something I developed by my free will. This is the one trait that many people first notice about me,
which is why I think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I do not usually get mad when people wrong me, but rather, I pile it within myself like a dam; I cannot
forget, but I move on. However, again, much like a dam, when I am aggravated to a certain extent, I
lose it. All my piled up anger will come out at once like a tidal wave. This characteristic, I believe,
was groomed within me because of my genetics, my mother is much the same, she never seems to get
angry, yet when she is pushed too far, she get s very

  • 2. Summary Of A Separate Peace By John Knowles In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, many things are shown about friendship. It shows us how friendship is not always easy and how jealousy, competition and irrational thinking can disrupt a seemingly strong and secure friendship. On the surface of Gene and Finny s friendship, it seemed that they were the best of friends and that they did not have any problems. But, all of this changed with time as most things do. Gene explains, we were best friends at that moment (page 18). This foreshadows how their seemingly extraordinary friendship is going to change. A common feeling Gene has towards Finny is jealousy. Finny is an athletic, charismatic, and smooth boy who seems to be able to get out of just about any situation he is put in. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with Gene s newfound thinking, he also begins to act differently. After the accident, Gene isolates himself. Gene explains, I spent as much time as I could alone in our room, trying to empty my mind of every thought, to forget where I was, even who I was (page 62). This quote represents the change in Gene s behavior. Before he was always out with his group of friends, and now he isolates and tries to forget himself. In friendship, communication of these thoughts are necessary. But, at Devon this form of communication is frowned upon. For example, Gene says, exposing a sincere emotion nakedly like that at the Devon School was the next thing to suicide (page 48). Gene is explaining how expressing emotions is not something that happens at Devon. Pro Choice The word abortion can be defined as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12 weeks of gestation. The debate on abortion has been widely contemplated for centuries. Mainly focusing on whether or not it is morally acceptable for a woman to decide if she can terminate the pregnancy. The act of abortion only justifies that a woman should have the right to exercise her moral ethics with her best interest in mind. One of the most important cases that caught the eyes of many American people was Roe v. Wade. This particular case set the stage for women with their fight for feminism and their legal rights about being able to have options once they realize that they are pregnant, as well as having their personal privacy. The other aspect of this controversial topic is if someone is pro life or pro choice. Typically when a woman decides to proceed with the abortion, they progress with what they believe is the best intention for the child and for themselves. Both sides have very legitimate reasons as to why one could be better than the other, but in the end, it is up to the woman in hopes that she does what is in the best interest of herself, as well as the child she is carrying. • 5. Reflection On Conflict Theory In this class, the idea of Conflict Theory was brought up very early on. I really enjoy the concept and find it incredibly useful when considering complex topics. Conflict theory, which was originally a concept in which Karl Marx is largely attributed, theorizes that conflict arises due to limited resources and the competition to secure those resources. The theory says that as long as there is a limit on how much of something there is (and since we all live on a giant ball that has a set amount of every resource, there always will be), then there will be people who fight to have control of it. For me, I find this theory in action everywhere, and I routinely use it as a logical deduction tool to deduce the underlying motivations of those around me. Whenever I see something strange happening around me, the first thing I do is ask myself: Who profits from this? How do they profit? Why would they do that? After that, I ask myself who else would want whatever is in question. For example, if I was asked to find a root cause for the ongoing conflict in the middle east, I would ask who benefits from it. Once I do that, I would probably find that a very large portion of the U.S. economy is derived from the import and export of petroleum, which is highly abundant in the area. In fact, if the U.S. were to lose the oil imported from the middle east, then disastrous wouldn t even come close to describing the economic turmoil that would ensue within the United States. From this, I would undoubtedly conclude that the U.S. ( some other European countries) are guilty of destabilizing the region in order to secure rights over their oil. But this theory does not just apply to global issues. The idea of conflict applies everywhere, from knowing what a possible future employer wants to hear, to understanding how much you are paying at the register when you go grocery shopping. In fact, both of these ideas had a large impact on how I landed my first job. When I was in high school, seniors were required to participate in a 200 hour internship at local businesses in order to graduate. Community gardens can be seen in many cities, with the community coming together to grow produce and relationships along the way. However, it is becoming a growing trend to start this idea at a younger scale. Many schools across North America have started implementing a garden into their after school or extracurricular programs. By introducing gardening to children at a young age allows for them to take in many of the benefits that come from gardening, and encouraging new ways of engagement. Gardening provides many hands on activities for children, including designing, planting, and harvesting the food (Yost, 2009). Many studies have shown that children who take care of a garden, or live near one, are more likely to show an interest in gardening as they grow up and develop a strong relationship with gardens and trees (Lohr, 2005). Another concept Smit developed is division of labour which say that jobs a business should be specialised, instead of one person having to carry out all the processes. So, to compensate the lose the candle marker would be forced lower his prices to survive and not get out of business, therefore, the candle maker is guided by the invisible hand being his self interest to gain profit to lower his prices. Division of labour another, one of Adam Smith s concepts explains that productive power of workers would increases each worker would have a specialised job to carry out and in turn would allow increase number of output to be produced. Smith further, says that division of labour is not something that is regulated by an authority, instead it is human nature. Another limitation is that the clinical trials on which EBM are based on have specific patent characteristics, most of which do not have multiple illnesses in order to eliminate confounding variables. Cultural Impacts Of Tourism Development SOCILAAND CULTURAL IMPACTS OF TOURISM DEVELOPMENT The discourse concerning the impacts of tourism in national development, economic and otherwise, has had both negative and positive connotations. Societies hosting tourist attractions are frequently seen as the victims of the negative effects of tourism while the tourists seen as the perpetrators of the crime; bringing their culture and values and imposing them on the host societies. While these generally accepted stereotypical thoughts may be true in some instances, it is however misleading to hold these notions regarding the changes in the social and cultural aspects of a society. Concerning tourism development, the socio cultural changes which occur in the community are more often than not seen as negative, with the positive contributions been underplayed or totally ignored. • 22. Southern Culture And The Circumstances Of The War Southern culture and the circumstances of the war fostered an environment where military officials who could distinguish themselves, especially those with values that most coincided with the ideal southern man, were set up to become the mythologized figures that would eventually become central to southern history. Jackson and Lee, through their own skill sets and actions during the war, solidified their respective legacies as a martyr and a leader. In 1861, Jackson was promoted as brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia, where he began to distinguish himself in the following battles. He gained Lee s trust and as a result, held a fair amount of control over command (Fredriksen). Jackson gained most of his fame during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862, where he employed his signature tactic of hard, forced marches that attempted to outwit the Union ( Robert E. Lee ). Jackson s strategy was to Always mystify, mislead, and surprise the enemy, if possible ( Stonewall Jackson ). He believed that despite having smaller numbers, the Confederacy could defeat the Union in battle if they act aggressive and communicate well ( Shenandoah Valley Campaign ). These tactics promoted him as the most well regarded military general during the war. In the eyes of many southerners, he was their best hope of succeeding in battle, and his death at Chancellorsville in 1863 deeply hurt the morale of the Confederacy (Fredriksen). • 23. Case Study Of Robert Deal From Emory University Robert Deal from Emory University is studying to learn about plants and their memory of stress. When plants face dry weather, their stomata shrink to reduce water loss. When a similar situation places the plants under stress again, the plant seems to recall this experience and recovers quicker. Robert Deal, who studies genetics and biochemistry, hopes to utilize this trait and pinpoint its gene. If he can locate and activate the genetic material associated with this memory, he believes he can speed up the process and cause plants to have the gene activated at all times, allowing the plants to withstand drier and warmer temperatures. Other researchers have been striving for a similar goal, using the genetic material of plants to create new hybrids that can withstand extreme weather. Across the globe, scientists have been making modified plant varieties that can resist drought, a growing concern as climate change becomes a more prominent issue. One hybrid has already existed since 2011 on the market. The corn plant, known as DroughtGuard, was bred to resist drought. It contains a gene from a bacteria that allows it to produce in times of water shortage. This corn crop has been approved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet, according to the research that I have done, the shootout actually occurred about half a block over from the O.K. Corral in the side yard of ex mayor William A. Harwood and from there it spread out into the middle of Fremont Street. Of course, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral sounds much better than the Gunfight in Harwood s Yard and Fremont Street so I guess someone decided to change it. O.K. Corral has much more of a Western ring to it. Personally, I think the Gunfight in Tombstone sounds pretty good, but there s no point trying to change it now. Virgil, Wyatt s older brother, was Tombstone s city marshal at the time of the shootout. He was also a deputy U.S. marshal. At the time of the gunfight, Wyatt considered himself a saloonkeeper, since he had a piece of the gambling winnings at the Oriental Saloon. This event included four of the Old West s best known law enforcers and also some of the Old West s best known villains . Each soldier in the book, The Things They Carried, experiences some sort of remembrance whether it be saddening or enlightening. Remembrance is consistently perceived as the ability our brains have to go back and revisit moments in time which either disturb us, or give to us a feeling of pure happiness. Its mere sound provokes thought along with curiosity. Generally, when we are alone, surrounded by a nonchalant atmosphere, our brain swirls with thoughts, taking us back to significant moments in our lives. These moments are never forgotten, they are always there for some sort of reason. By means of these memories we can continue to learn from our mistakes and better our lifestyle. In Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried, he presents his view on remembrance. O Brien doesn t necessarily see remembrance in its materialistic form, he believes it is not about the act of remembering, but about the fact that one does not have the ability to forget these events, especially the events he had experienced. His perspective is that seeing a plethora of violent deaths in war, are moments which are utterly effortless to recall, however they may be extraordinarily difficult to bring up with someone else perhaps who does not really understand the intentions. Moreover, the viability of the study depended on the creation of a situation that was ecologically valid in that it was provoking for children and required elements of deception (the other person being an actor and the game being rigged such that participants would not win) and some risk of emotional distress. The modern system of vaccine development, regulation and testing was developed during the 20th century. To engender a vaccine mediated immunization or protection has been a major challenge. Presently available vaccines work primarily through the induction of the antigen specific antibodies. The effectiveness of any vaccine is determined by the quality of the antibodies, as their work pattern and avidity. Vaccine Design and Development Development of vaccines includes two broad stages. This stage may last for 1 2 years and often some candidate vaccines cannot go beyond this stage due to the potential lack of immunity generation. After this, the next step includes clinical studies on human beings. First a small group of humans are tested with the vaccine, followed by a larger group, to assess the safety and extent of the immune response that vaccine can provoke.
