Marco Polo- An Exploratory Essay
Many children, including myself, have once played the game Marco Polo. Although, I have always
been curious, who exactly is Marco Polo? My fascination of Marco Polo warped into a fixation of his
travels. Marco Polo was born in Venice in the year 1254. His father, Nicolo, and his uncle, Maffeo,
were merchants who had seats in the great nobleman council of Venice (Polo IV). According to his
records, he had traveled thousands of miles with his father and uncle. Marco, Nicolo and Maffeo
(known as the Polos) left Venice, and did not return for twenty six years. Upon their return, they were
not welcomed in Venice. The Polos were long thought to have been dead. When they arrived in
Venice, their clothes were old and worn out; the things that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

He called this city the City of Heaven (Freedman 41); Marcos wrote, It is without a doubt the finest
and most splendid city in the world (Freedman 41). However, Marco Polo s last stop was in China, a
place so different and interesting compared to his own; he spent the majority of his time there. After
about a three and a half year journey, Marco noted that the Polos arrived in the court of Kublai Khan,
the conqueror of China. The Great Khan ruled a vast empire of prosperous cities that had richer goods,
services, and technology than any place in Europe that Marco had ever seen (Freedman 6). Kublai
Khan was the grandson of the infamous Genghis Khan, the fearless Mongol who swept across Asia
and the Middle East generations earlier. When the Polos arrived in Shangdu (the capitol of Kublai
Khan s empire), the Mongol empire stretched from China, to Russia and Iraq; the empire was at the
pinnacle of its existence (Polo 26). Marco stated that he soon rose to a position of power in Kublai
Khan s court, because Mublai Khan was pleased by Marco s knowledge and logic. Marco endeavored
on confidential missions to learn about all kinds of different matters in the countries he visited, in
order to satisfy the curiosity of the Great Khan (Hart 35). The Polos accumulated great wealth in
jewels and gold, thanks to the generosity of Kublai Khan; however, they eventually grew homesick
and began their

Frederick Douglass s Response To The Abolishment Of...
At first, Frederick Douglass was apprehensive about speaking in front of a large audience on slavery,
but once he gathered his courage, he received a warm welcome. This encouraged Douglass to speak
freely for the abolishment of slavery. He felt addressing the overall principle was more pertinent at
that moment than the solutions to end slavery.
Since British Christians were directly affiliated with the British, Douglass first thought their
opposition to slavery might hinder efforts to abolish slavery given their close ties. However, Douglass
later changed his views, as he thought given the prevalence and severity of slavery, it would take the
influence of England to help combat slavery, as their dominance rose above any authorities in the ...

He suggested that slaves should question why they should obey their masters aside from being
commanded to do.
Douglass told the group about the outcome of Sambo, a slave who was disobedient and did not
complete his work within two and a half hours as directed by his slave owner. As a result, Sambo
received lashings from his slave owner. Douglass contrasted this with reasons why obedience is
necessary in the words of slave owners. In other words, if slaves wanted to be well fed, cared for, and
receive favors from their masters, then they should be obedient. However, in Sambo s example, he
took a nap and was given a lashing, which is quite the opposite of being well cared for or receiving
favors.
Douglass discussed how owners sought to convince slaves why they should obey their masters. Slave
owners informed their slaves that the Lord brought them to the Christian country to experience the
kingdom of heaven because the Lord saw their desperation in Africa, as they worked intensely to
make ends meet. According to slave owners, the Lord empowered Bishop Newton to take the slaves
from Africa to relieve them from their despair. In return, owners expected the slaves to be thankful and
obedient to their slave masters for being in the Christian country, as they would not have the
opportunity to enter the kingdom of heaven without

Heterosexuality In The 19th Century
Heterosexuality is old as procreation, ancient as the lust of Eve and Adam. Heterosexuality is defined
as sexual feeling or behavior directed toward a person or persons of the opposite sex. However, in the
early nineteenth century, from 1820 to 1860 the heterosexual did not exist, love back then was
represented by purity and romance and not by lust. The term heterosexuality was developed in the late
nineteenth century to denote a universal sexual and cultural norm even though human sexuality was
known about for a long time. Human sexuality has been changing throughout history, since early
investigations Contrary to our usual assumption, past Americans and other peoples named, perceived,
and socially organized the bodies, lusts, and

Discussing Theories And Types Of Systems
Discussing theories and types of systems was a process of looking at situation from a distanced and
unrelated point of view. Some concepts were easier to understand because I had previously
experienced them or realized my part in a specific system. The first part of the course brought up a lot
of questions about the application and ways in which these processes occurred. This approach led to
many discussions and ideas about why specific situations were classified as they were within the
dynamic systems.
Throughout these last sessions, it was evident that many of these theories and concepts could be
applied, and visually placed on maps. However, it was represent our ideas visually through mapping
that was a hard process in these experiential sessions. This became our complicated system through
the project. As we looked retrospectively through our progress in each session, we changed words and
arranged ideas as we felt would make sense, and would help us represent our intentions more
thoroughly. This was also a moving system that led us to different ways of thinking and understanding
others worldview thus increasing our complexity.
My group chose an idea fairly fast. Our self organization was very goal directed, as we understood the
task and objective of our project. We divided our ideas into two groups, a local issue and an
international issue. This was our way to simplify our task. Our local suggestions were between Uber
and AirBnB, and our international suggestion was

The Importance Of Work Betty Friedan Summary
Rhetorical Analysis of Betty Friedan s The Importance of Work Betty Friedan, a best selling author, a
strong activist, and the first president of the National Organization for Women, wrote the book The
Feminine Mystique in 1963. The book analyzes American women who felt trapped by feminine
standards and their domesticated roles in society. In the excerpt, The Importance of Work, from The
Feminine Mystique, Friedan focuses on American women s search for human identity, which she
defines as meaningful and purposeful work. Throughout her essay, Friedan appeals to logic and
emotion by combining persuasive methods and rhetorical strategies, such as metaphors, rhetorical
questions, allusions, repetition, and parallelism, to make her argument ... Show more content on

American philosopher and psychologist William James. In paragraph eleven, Friedan quotes James,

good luck, are things which warm our hearts and make us feel ourselves a match for life. But deeper
than all such things, and able to suffice unto itself without them, is the sense of the amount of effort
which we can put forth.
Friedan also alludes to Olive Schreiner, a South African author. She explains Schreiner s concern for

Necessary Restrictions of Assault Weapons
Necessary Restrictions of Assault Weapons It seems that gunmen can walk freely in schools at present.
Too many murders with assault rifles and pistols happened in campus. The Americans laying down
under gunfire are not troopers patrolling in Middle East threating by terrorism, but children having
classes and playing with friends in campus. Every police officer and nurse cannot forget the tears left
on faces of who can never see the sun of tomorrow and even celebrate their 10 year birthdays.
Arguments about an old topic of limiting guns and weapons are now rising again; but this time,
parents turn to be main supporting force of such prohibition. Emphasizing the right of owning
weapons, which is protected by US Constitution, or at least, an amendment, some people are still the
resisting power against any forms of restriction of firearms. However, even ignoring the fact that
related laws are actually outdated, some actions seem to be necessary for protecting children away
from malice of weapon keepers. Therefore, the restrictions of assault weapons should be considered to
put onto the agenda due to the excessive power of assault weapons, the obsolete background check
system helping proliferation of firearms, and erroneous interpretation of constitution of private arms
by opponents. First of all, such laws were legislated for self defense purposes of US citizens, but high
power assault weapons tend to be excessive for this concept. When a supposed criminal approaches,

Human Rights In Thailand Essay
Human rights have been a factor that dominates many trades throughout the world; affecting world
growth, production, trade, and more. The world has been crawling to the top, world leaders racing to
govern countries with better economics, politics, and power. In the process human rights become
ignored, forgotten, and abused. Some conditions have improved, while others have worsened. The
human right conditions in Thailand, although ranked a partially free country, has been unchanged for
the past few years, and experiences many human rights violations from prisoner torture to police
brutality. Thailand is the only country to avoid direct colonial rule. In 1932 the country transformed to

experienced strong economic growth. On October 25, 2004 security forces opened fire on protestors
outside a Tak Bai police station in southern Thailand. Seven where shot and killed, seventy eight were
suffocated or crushed to death; and over a thousand injured were held in police custody for days
without medical care. Officials claim, they were only doing their jobs (Government). The three
southern most provinces were pronounced under emergency decreed in 2005. Authorities use lèse
majesté laws to justify human rights violations. In 2006 Thaksin was removed from office by a
military coup. In March May of 2010 there were ninety reported deaths and over two thousand injured
(World). The southern provinces experienced security force brutality and abuse, free speech
restrictions, and violation of refugee and migrant rights. In 2011 the current prime minister Yingluck,
was elected into office. Since Yingluck was elected into office, in 2011, she has yet to approach the
subject of human rights violations, not providing accountability. She is receiving much criticism for
her relation to former prime minister Thaksin, her brother. The conditions of human rights have not

2.3. Empirical Literature on the Challenges in Using Improved Cookstoves
Despite the potential benefits and the efforts of national, regional and global initiatives, programs and
projects the rate of improved cookstoves acceptance has fallen behind the expectation due to different
factors (Puzzolo, 2013; Berkeley Air Monitoring Group, 2012; Lewis Pattanayak, 2012; GACC, 2010;
WHO, 2009; Barnes et al., 1994). To identify reasons affecting the acceptance of improved cookstoves
studies have been conducted and the main findings are summarized.

Based on the study, household head education, income, household size, fuel wood price and access to
credit were found to be statistically significant positive factors that determine the acceptance of
improved cookstoves. On the other hand, significant negative associations were found between the
acceptance of improved cookstoves and household head s age and socially marginalized status. A field
assessment of improved cookstoves adoption practices in Indonesia was conducted by Geary et al.
(2012). The assessment investigated that awareness of dangers of indoor air pollution, knowledge
about and the availability of improved cookstoves, the built environment to install and the increased
price of wood fuel as well as social networks are factors that positively affect improved cookstoves
adoption decision. On the other hand, the free availability of fuelwood was found to be one of the
factors that lead to the decision not to adopt improved cookstoves.
Menon and Thandapani (2011) conducted a study to understand the adoption dynamics of improved
cookstoves among people living in rural India by including variables of motivation, affordability, and
level of engagement in their analysis. Neighbors influence, awareness campaigns, the effect of
perceived risks/benefits of improving cookstoves vis a vis traditional stoves, income, education and

Predicting Athletic Performance Using The Five Factor...
The article, Predicting athletic performance using the five factor model of personality by Ralph L.
Piedmont, David C. Hill, Susana Blanco seeks to address how the five factor model of personality
when utilized, is a suitable predictor of athletic performance and how it is can assist in gaining an
insight and understanding of the competitive nature within athletes, to show if there was a correlation
between personality traits within different competitive sport. There have been many other studies used
to evaluate personality within sport such as Cooper s study (1969) that concluded that those that are
more athletic in a competition sense are inclined to be socially confidence, aggressive and have an
increased motivation to achieve. (Piedmont, R., Hill, D., Blanco, S. 769 777, 1997). Therefore the
authors aim was to utlise several testing method to gain a greater insight to there questions and
compliment other studies findings or determine different things. The five factor model constructed by
McCrae and John, 1992 is a scale based self and peer rated scale on 5 traits, these being Neuroticism,
Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Each personality trait has several other
correlating traits which contribute assist in determining personality within competition. Examples of
results of low neuroticism correlate with high self confidence and low anxiety. High conscientiousness

Essay on The Feminine Ideal in The Bell Jar
Throughout The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath explores a number of themes, particularly regarding the gender
roles, and subsequently, the mental health care system for women. Her 19 year old protagonist, Esther
Greenwood, is the vessel through which Plath poses many probing questions about these topics to the
reader. In the 1950s when the novel was set, women were held to a high standard: to be attractive but
pure, intelligent but submissive, and to generally accept the notion of bettering oneself only in order to
make life more comfortable for the significant male in her life. Esther not only deals with the typical
problems faced by women in her time, but she has to experience those things through the lens of
mental illness though it is up for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite this initial attraction to, and appreciation of, Doreen s messy, flirty lifestyle, Esther still
remains stuck in a traditional mindset. She turns on Doreen after she witnesses what she perceives as
Doreen s whorish, sloppy behavior in the incident with Lenny, where in which Doreen had drunk
herself sick and acted promiscuously with a man she had met on the street just a few hours before.
Esther even states that [d]eep down, I would be loyal to Betsey and her innocent friends. It was Betsey
I resembled at heart (22). Earlier in the novel, Doreen and Esther had made fun of Betsey s
wholesome, goody goody personality, calling her Pollyanna Cowgirl (6) behind her back. Even though
Esther was originally awed by Doreen s boldness, she feels naturally compelled to stay true to the
clean, innocent lifestyle preferred for women in the 1950s. Esther s judgmental attitude is not just
reserved for her peers. She also makes decisions about the adults she encounters including her
superiors and mentors based upon their physical attractiveness. When Esther first brings up Jay Cee,
her boss at the magazine, she describes her as plug ugly (6), and then goes on to describe her
accomplishments as if they were much less significant than they really were. Simply because she was
unattractive by Esther s standards, her value as a person was diminished. Esther says, Jay Cee wanted

Changes And Effects Of The Hundred Years War
The Hundred Years War is the seventh longest war in history lasting one hundred and sixteen years in
which there were 3.5 million deaths. The Hundred Years War was between France and England from
1337 to 1453 over the succession to the French throne. When Charles IV of France died without sons
in 1328, his closest male relative was King Edward III of England. Isabella of France claimed the
French throne for her son, but the French rejected it. Philip of Valois, first cousin of Charles IV,
succeeded the throne as King Philip VI of France. For about nine years the English had accepted the
Valois succession to the French throne but finally they rejected it and Edward III claimed the throne.

There were many different weapons, some old behind established and some new and created by the
kingdoms. The creation of the longbow changed the course of the war, giving a distinct advantage to
the English. This weapon was utilized to its full potential because it changed the feudal armies to
small archery based troops. There were also developments of other weapons that the English and
French did not create but used the weapons for the first time in the location. The effect changed the
way they traded and with whom they traded. New places began to trade with France and England so
they were exposed to different cultures and societies. France and England took these new weapons and
made advancements to them like adding a spear to the end of the gun or creating stronger bullets.21
New believes began to develop throughout France and England including the belief of nationalism
throughout the society. This new belief changed society drastically and made for a strong and
powerful monarch in both France and England. Because of these new believes army sizes grew which
in turn caused more deaths but also increased manpower for the king. These believes solved the crisis
because the king needed troops and the commoners needed money. It also caused France and England
to believe that their country was superior to all others and therefore more powerful

of xenophobia towards the prawns. In this day in age we see a lot of hatred towards foreigners, in
particular, terrorists. In the beginning of the movie you see Blomkamp interviewing the humans about
the prawns. They show a great level of hatred and disgust for the prawns intruding on their town. In
the real world, we see this same form of hatred or disgust from certain people about the immigrants
and refugees intruding on and taking over many American s jobs. Blomkamp wants to push the issue
that there is great hatred throughout the world today. The main reason he produced the film in
Johannesburg was because there were high tensions between native south Africans and Zimbabwean
refugees. He wanted to try to make the town he grew up in great again. Blomkamp wanted to open
people s eyes with the use of science fiction to show that in some ways we treat other humans like the
humans treated the prawns.

Shamanism Rituals In South Korea
Korea is a country that dabbles in various religions and traversed deep into their traditions one of
which is Shamanism. In these rituals, the focus is on both the shaman s (mudang) individual
experience as well as on the shaman s hereditary abilities to contact the spirit world, inhabited by
various shamanistic gods. With its history of some five thousand years, shamanism is the oldest belief
system in Korea (Miettinen 2010). A tradition that nearly everyone in South Korea participated in until
the arrival of religions varying from Confucianism to Protestant Christianity. Christianity arrived in
Korea a little under 200 years. By integrating parts of shamanistic practices, various religions have

Importance Of National Self-Determination In Africa
In African contexts, an emphasis was given to the fact that national self determination meant self
determination of the people against the colonial landlords. The nation didn t oppose so much another
nation as it did the colonial autocratic ruler (xxx, xxx). But what seems more important is the fact that
when the colonial power finally realized the need to prepare their colonies for self government, they
did so within the framework established by the colonial state (xxx, xxx). The colonial state thus
became equated not only with its physical attributes (territory and population) but also with its
bureaucracy, the nervous center from which stemmed ail decisions affecting the country (xxx, xxx).
National self determination also found its ultimate expression, not in continental Pan Africanism or
broader regional units, but in the states, Africans inherited from the colonial powers (xxx, xxx). The
first indications that pan Africanism had been overruled by the nationalism of individual states came
during the first assembly of African independent states held in Accra in 1958. It was then that Kwame
Nkrumah, who ironically until then had led the movement towards Pan Africanism, expressed the
need to respect the independence, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the newly created
states in the interests of peace (xxx, xxx). When African states finally achieved their independence in
conformity with the United Nations General Assembly Resolutions interpreted as the

The God Delusion By Richard Dawkins
In his book The God Delusion (2006), British evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins asserts that if
the entire evidence in the world favored creationism, he would immediately recognize and shift his
stance on the issue. However, he also notes that as of now, the immense amount of accessible evidence
supports the theory of evolution. Dawkins establishes his stance on the creation of the universe based
on the side that has provides the most evidence. This reflects the basis on which science relies on
evidence along with the fact that the acceptance or rejection of a scientific idea depends upon the
evidence relevant to it (B.A. Robinsion). In science, ideas that are not supported by evidence are
immediately rejected as sides in an argument ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The biggest overlap between the two sides being the theory on which the world was created. Each
cites their own evidence for their beliefs. Religion taking a side of biblical literalism that insists on the
infallibility of a literal interpretation of the bible. Science taking a materialistic side where matter is
the fundamental reality in the universe. Nothing has come to characterize modern science more than
its rejection of appeals to God in explaining the workings of nature. (Numbers 265) Dawkins notes
there s two sides, science and religion. He must choose one or the other in the conflict of the creation
of the universe. He puts aside scientific bias, and claims that if evidence now heavily favored
creationism he would, without hesitation, publicly change his mind. Evidence is truly the pinnacle
argument in the conflict between science and religion. The chief difference is evidence. In science it s
ultimately based on the observation of nature and evidence in religion is largely based on faith. In the
case for science there s actual proof that you can affirm through sight that avoids skepticism. While on
the side of religion, it s based on textual evidence that can t be proven but only believed in. Dawkins
sites evidence in the matter of science v. religion as his main determinant for shifting his stance to
creationism in a situation where all the evidence in the world pointed toward that view. English
philosopher, William Kingdom Clifford, once said It is

Human Composting Is Wrong
For centuries, people have looked to burying and burning their bodies after they die. After all, they are
considered ethical and normal by almost all cultures. However, these options do not give back to the
earth in the way they should after the earth has fed us, drenched our thirst, built our homes, and given
us a place to love; without it, we could not do any of these things. An ecologist named Susanne Wiigh
Masak from Sweden has given us an alternative that will not only help the earth but then help the
people in the process by providing them with a healthier place to live. Wiigh Masak has proposed that
instead of simply disposing of our bodies after we die, we should help the earth and the living by

Studies show that, from an experiment on May 6th 2016, approximately 2,464 flights are made over
the North Atlantic Ocean a day, a drastic difference from Charles Lindbergh s time. ( Over the Ocean
). Before 1927 no one would have thought this possible, that is until Charles Lindbergh did what no
man had done before; flew a transatlantic flight from New York to Paris. The events that happened to
Charles Lindbergh impacted aviation and politics in the early 20 s and 30 s.
Before his groundbreaking flight Lindbergh attended Wisconsin college for engineering, but after two
years dropped out to pursue his aviation career ( Charles Lindbergh ). In 1924, he enlisted in the

While in Germany, Charles saw that they were making extremely powerful bomber planes, which
made him worried about their destructive potential towards England (Giblin 156). Once he arrived
home he told officials of the planes destructive potential, but they made no suddens actions on the
information (Giblin 157). Charles was invited back to Germany a second time where he was allowed
to view multiple new German war planes and test fly one of their new bombers (Giblin 157). Charles
had also been awarded the Service Cross of the German Eagle with it s accompanying star, a very high
ranking award that was created to honor any foreigner who had served Germany in some way (Giblin
164).
Charles Lindbergh had a large impact on aviation and various other things in the mid 1900s. His life
was full of of ups and downs, but he persevered because of them. Today, thanks to his perseverance,
modern aviation has reached new heights. Thousands of flights are made a day all across the globe,
some reaching up to 8,598 miles (Meltzer). Clearly Charles was an important icon in the 1920s and for

Children Immigrants Essay example
Children Immigrants
Immigrant children did not live an easy life in the nineteenth century. Most children were never
educated. Italian children immigrants were rarely put through schooling. However, Eastern European
Jewish immigrants looked at public schooling as their best way to help their children enhance their
potential in life. Chicago, Detroit, and New York City had large populations of Jewish and Italian
immigrants. The conditions of the children in all three cities were similar yet different with cities in
which they lived in. Jewish and Italian immigrant children had to overcome many obstacles during
their adjustment to American life in the nineteenth century. Italian immigrants children were cast into

Immigrants from the north were encouraging frequent contact and social recreation with boys.
Jewish immigrants prioritized education because they saw it as the best way to help their children
enhance their potential in life. In the city of Chicago Jewish children started off in school. They had
eight public schools in Chicago all for young Jewish people. ?Socialization of the immigrant children
was the job of a handful of schools in the ghetto, where Jewish attendance reached 92 93%?
(Educating the Jewish Young People). In most public schools the total population was 68 percent
Jewish. Many Jewish children attended the Jewish Training School, a vocational school that
emphasized arts and mechanical trades. However, one must remember that this did not mean that
every one of these Jewish children attended all eight grades that were provided for them from public
schools. ?What tends to aggravate these conditions, and further to interfere with the educational career
of the Jewish child is, on the one hand, the apparently natural truancy of some boys, and on the other,
the necessity?always pressing on the workingmen?s children?of leaving school and going to work?
(Educating the Jewish Young People). Most of the Jewish children that did attend school did not
complete eight grades and many of them did not complete six grades. These children leaving school
were as young as age twelve to fourteen to go and work.
Jewish children living conditions were much cleaner and

The Communication Structure Of A Geographically...
The purpose of the research article (article) is to explore three specific topics regarding the
communication structure of a geographically distributed software development team: the observable
behavior of the organization in reference to Conway s law, difficulties encountered by geographically
distributed teams, and potential solutions for these difficulties. Conway s law suggests that the
resulting product of an organization will take on characteristics of the organization s communication
systems. This would suggest that a large geographically segregated team, which faces communication
barriers as a result, would produce a product reflective of the barriers.
The article states that geographically distributed teams will face difficulty in the exchange of
information. Teams must use a common language, with agreed upon attributes. These types of teams
develop software systems individually, which must then work together. This would require great
coordination through effective communication. The article makes the point that Conway s law dictates
that teams coordinate their efforts, while Frederick Brooks suggests that this is not so easy to achieve.
Advancement in communication technologies has helped to tackle some of the communication
barriers that distributed teams face. The article justifies the study by stating that existing research is
not clear on the benefits of applying Conway s law to this specific situation.
In order to address this knowledge gap, a study was

National Museum Research Paper
Essay #1
I have always loved the National Museum of Natural History, ever since I visited for the first time in
fourth grade. My favorite exhibitions are definitely those dealing with animals or space, but I cannot
pick a favorite. When I found out about the opportunity to volunteer at the museum, I was extremely
excited, since the program seemed to be perfect for me. I have experience in teaching and talking in
front of groups of people, but I want to take it a step further by talking and being a guide in a busier,
more demanding setting. Plus, volunteering at the museum would be a dream come true since I could
see the exhibitions every other week; you learn something new every time you visit. Lastly, and least

I want to be a surgeon, which will require me to take intensive science courses. My desire to work in
the health field was solidified after I went to the 2015 Congress of Future Medical Leaders. At the
congress, I met people like Sir Richard Roberts, the winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physiology,
Robert Darling, Bill Clinton s personal physician, and Jack Andraka, a boy who created a method for
detecting early stages of pancreatic cancer when he was my age. I was inspired by their speeches and
the fact that they were once my age; it made my dream to be a surgeon seem much more realistic and
attainable. I even had a personal conversation with Mr. Darling, who told me that all I needed in order
to reach my dream is tenacity. The most inspiring speech, however, was given by a woman named
Carmen Tarleton. She suffered a brutal attack in which her face was doused in industrial grade lye, and
she was reduced to becoming a living corpse. However, a group of surgeons gave her a full face
transplant and she is now a force to be reckoned with. I knew, at that moment, that I wanted to help
people like her, and that scientific progress is the reason she is still

the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct (2015) and the National Institute for

First and foremost, it is significant that the MHN complies with keeping complete confidentiality in
terms with the NHS Code of Practice (Department of Health, 2003). Jane has been informed by her
doctor that she has a diagnosis of Bipolar mood disorder. Using the biopsychosocial model (Engel,
1977) the MHN should determine the biological, psychological and social aspects for Jane s
treatments, to give her the best care possible. This relates to person centred care as the biopsychosocial
model is providing a modern and holistic approach to care (Borrell Carrio, Suchman Epstein, 2004).
Within the NMC Code, it writes to prioritise people which includes treating service users with respect,
encouraging service users to make decisions about their care and act in the best interest of people
(NMC Code of Conduct, 2015). This is imperative to developing a relationship with the service user
that is professional yet also caring and compassionate. This also links to the 6Cs: care, compassion,
communication, competence, courage and commitment, which should be adhered to by the MHN in
Jane s care plan. (NHS England, 2016). The MHN should develop a care programme with Jane, using
the Care Programme Approach, whereby a care programme should be conducted and monitored
throughout Jane s treatment (Kingdon, 1994). This will help Jane and the MHN as it gives a clear
view of the treatment plan that is also patient centred and Jane will feel involved in her care plan,
which will ensure that Jane s care is provided in a therapeutic manner and at the highest standard

A Dividend Payment For Shareholders
A dividend is the part of a firm`s earnings that are paid to the shareholder, either in monetary terms or
as shares. In the UK, dividends are paid by UK quoted companies semi annually and are taxed
depending on an individual`s income (Arnold, 2008 GOV.UK, 2015). According to the Financial
Times (2015) however, a dividend payment to shareholders is not an obligation, in fact a business`s
board of directors are able to opt whether they desire to make a dividend payment or not, depending
mostly on the health of the business. If so, the dividend payment to shareholders is made from a firm`s
accumulated profits or reserves pots, with the anticipation that the firm can cover this withdrawal of
monetary funds by injecting further cash quickly and efficiently into the firm or shareholders may
receive dividends in forms of shares, in this situation, a firm is unlikely to lose much as shareholders
would be likely to reinvest into the firm. Conversely, if a firm`s board of directors opt the opposing
decision, not to make a dividend payment, this is likely to be due to a firm supporting an insufficient
cash flow or the monetary fund s being identified as needed urgently for more meaningful purposes,
such as reducing debt (The Financial Times, 2015). Despite this, the main question in consideration is:
whether a rational investor considers dividends when determining the value of shares? In order to
answer this question effectively, this essay shall commence further through exploring

How Self Justification Is Drives Escalation Of Commitment
The article, How self justification indirectly drives escalation of commitment a motivational
perspective , examines different influences on decision making. It demonstrates that people possess
the need for self justification and that self justification drives the escalation of commitment.
Steinkuhler, Mahlendorf, Brettel (2014) argue that the escalation of commitment phenomenon results
from indirect cognitive processes such as selective perception sunk cost, and over optimism ( p.66).
The article also details various studies conducted to validate findings on how cognitive processes
further propel the escalation of commitment effect. This paper summarizes the Steinkuhler,
Mahlendorf, Brettel findings. It also provides a more detailed example of how a major product launch
from Mattel ended in failure in part because of selective perception. Escalation of Commitment There
are times when executives make decisions without being certain of a particular outcome. They take
risk. Unfortunately, taking risk can lead to loss. Loss can be in the form of money, time, reputation etc.
Escalation of commitment occurs when decision makers escalate their commitment by continuing to
invest resources and persist beyond an economically rational point to terminate a failing project
(Steinkuhler, Mahlendorf, Brettel, 2014, p. 192). Let s take the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Essay On The Witches In Macbeth
Double, Double Toil and Trouble
The strive and ambition for power can seem to be true perfection, but one should be careful what they
wish for, because that power might be exactly what causes their downfall. In the play, Macbeth, by,
William Shakespeare, the witches have a significant role. They represent that some things are too good

Macbeth many prophecies throughout the play. Macbeth listened to the things they said and it resulted

it not, Duncan, for it is a knell / That summons thee to heaven or to hell. (Shakespere, 2.1, 63 65)
Macbeth who was once a very good person, went out to murder the king. Just because he thought he
had a chance at ruling the country he decided to do something evil. Ever since he heard that prophecy
he did not stop until it came true. As the play goes on Macbeth becomes more and more evil,
destroying everything in his path. Not in the legions / Of horrid hell can come a devil more damned /
In evils to top Macbeth. (Shakespere, 4.3, 57 59) Macduff says this after he finds out Macbeth had
killed all his children and his wife. Macbeth has become a villain and will not stop at anything. The
prophecy has caused nothing but trouble for Macbeth, he is now feared and hated everywhere. It
changed an innocent kind man, into an evil feared man.
The witches set the theme, not everything is as it seems. They do this by telling Macbeth something he
will expect to come true, when really they have tricked him and mean for the opposite to happen. In
scene three, the witches meet with their master to discuss Macbeth and how they are planning on
leading him to his downfall. This night i ll spend / Unto a dismal and a fatal end. / Great business

Solution Of Urbanization
Urbanization is an increasing number of city dwellers compared to people living in rural areas. Urban
development in poor nations has resulted in multiple issues such as air pollution and health problems.
Urban growth puts an enormous strain on social services. This essay will explain how rapid,
uncontrolled urbanization has led to serious consequences in developing countries.
Urbanization leads to several health issues. One of these problems is a rise of the epidemic. Because
of a dramatical number of people, it may become more difficult to deal with an outbreak. These
epidemics occur at an incredible speed, hence, controlling them must be a big question for the
authorities (Berley 2016). Not only does the speed happen swiftly, but the scale of the epidemic will
be out of control. For example, Angola has been experiencing a yellow fever outbreak for decades
with a rapid speed (Berley 2016). It has continued to spread in the large scale until 8 million people
have been vaccinated at the end of the outbreak (Berley 2016). Furthermore, urbanization leads to an
increasing rate of non communicable diseases such as cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Obesity also
is an example of a disease which accompanies with urban life nowadays. According to Alleyne,
graduates from the University of West Indies, he said that the rate of obesity as well as diabetes went
up sharply in developing countries (Alleyne 2011). Those non communicable diseases are the result of
the street life and unbalanced diet of most people who live in such countries. Not only does the
number of patient experience a surge, but the age of people who has been diagnosed is getting
younger, even children are affected by them. (Berley 2016). Taking Caribbean as an example, obesity
is increasing in this city as urban areas are expanding, and the life of people in Caribbean is changing
as they are struggle with those potential fatal diseases (Alleyne 2011). Furthermore, most developing
countries are poorly resourced and have a weak health systems. This is one of reason why Ebola
spread easily in West Africa but was contained immediately when it reached North America and
Europe (Alleyne 2011). The hospitals as well as the healthcare centres are overloaded,

  • 2. Marco Polo- An Exploratory Essay Many children, including myself, have once played the game Marco Polo. Although, I have always been curious, who exactly is Marco Polo? My fascination of Marco Polo warped into a fixation of his travels. Marco Polo was born in Venice in the year 1254. His father, Nicolo, and his uncle, Maffeo, were merchants who had seats in the great nobleman council of Venice (Polo IV). According to his records, he had traveled thousands of miles with his father and uncle. Marco, Nicolo and Maffeo (known as the Polos) left Venice, and did not return for twenty six years. Upon their return, they were not welcomed in Venice. The Polos were long thought to have been dead. When they arrived in Venice, their clothes were old and worn out; the things that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He called this city the City of Heaven (Freedman 41); Marcos wrote, It is without a doubt the finest and most splendid city in the world (Freedman 41). However, Marco Polo s last stop was in China, a place so different and interesting compared to his own; he spent the majority of his time there. After about a three and a half year journey, Marco noted that the Polos arrived in the court of Kublai Khan, the conqueror of China. The Great Khan ruled a vast empire of prosperous cities that had richer goods, services, and technology than any place in Europe that Marco had ever seen (Freedman 6). Kublai Khan was the grandson of the infamous Genghis Khan, the fearless Mongol who swept across Asia and the Middle East generations earlier. When the Polos arrived in Shangdu (the capitol of Kublai Khan s empire), the Mongol empire stretched from China, to Russia and Iraq; the empire was at the pinnacle of its existence (Polo 26). Marco stated that he soon rose to a position of power in Kublai Khan s court, because Mublai Khan was pleased by Marco s knowledge and logic. Marco endeavored on confidential missions to learn about all kinds of different matters in the countries he visited, in order to satisfy the curiosity of the Great Khan (Hart 35). The Polos accumulated great wealth in jewels and gold, thanks to the generosity of Kublai Khan; however, they eventually grew homesick and began their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Frederick Douglass s Response To The Abolishment Of... At first, Frederick Douglass was apprehensive about speaking in front of a large audience on slavery, but once he gathered his courage, he received a warm welcome. This encouraged Douglass to speak freely for the abolishment of slavery. He felt addressing the overall principle was more pertinent at that moment than the solutions to end slavery. Since British Christians were directly affiliated with the British, Douglass first thought their opposition to slavery might hinder efforts to abolish slavery given their close ties. However, Douglass later changed his views, as he thought given the prevalence and severity of slavery, it would take the influence of England to help combat slavery, as their dominance rose above any authorities in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He suggested that slaves should question why they should obey their masters aside from being commanded to do. Douglass told the group about the outcome of Sambo, a slave who was disobedient and did not complete his work within two and a half hours as directed by his slave owner. As a result, Sambo received lashings from his slave owner. Douglass contrasted this with reasons why obedience is necessary in the words of slave owners. In other words, if slaves wanted to be well fed, cared for, and receive favors from their masters, then they should be obedient. However, in Sambo s example, he took a nap and was given a lashing, which is quite the opposite of being well cared for or receiving favors. Douglass discussed how owners sought to convince slaves why they should obey their masters. Slave owners informed their slaves that the Lord brought them to the Christian country to experience the kingdom of heaven because the Lord saw their desperation in Africa, as they worked intensely to make ends meet. According to slave owners, the Lord empowered Bishop Newton to take the slaves from Africa to relieve them from their despair. In return, owners expected the slaves to be thankful and obedient to their slave masters for being in the Christian country, as they would not have the opportunity to enter the kingdom of heaven without ... • 4. Heterosexuality In The 19th Century Heterosexuality is old as procreation, ancient as the lust of Eve and Adam. Heterosexuality is defined as sexual feeling or behavior directed toward a person or persons of the opposite sex. However, in the early nineteenth century, from 1820 to 1860 the heterosexual did not exist, love back then was represented by purity and romance and not by lust. The term heterosexuality was developed in the late nineteenth century to denote a universal sexual and cultural norm even though human sexuality was known about for a long time. • 5. Discussing Theories And Types Of Systems Discussing theories and types of systems was a process of looking at situation from a distanced and unrelated point of view. Some concepts were easier to understand because I had previously experienced them or realized my part in a specific system. The first part of the course brought up a lot of questions about the application and ways in which these processes occurred. This approach led to many discussions and ideas about why specific situations were classified as they were within the dynamic systems. Throughout these last sessions, it was evident that many of these theories and concepts could be applied, and visually placed on maps. However, it was represent our ideas visually through mapping that was a hard process in these experiential sessions. This became our complicated system through the project. As we looked retrospectively through our progress in each session, we changed words and arranged ideas as we felt would make sense, and would help us represent our intentions more thoroughly. This was also a moving system that led us to different ways of thinking and understanding others worldview thus increasing our complexity. My group chose an idea fairly fast. Our self organization was very goal directed, as we understood the task and objective of our project. We divided our ideas into two groups, a local issue and an international issue. This was our way to simplify our task. Our local suggestions were between Uber and AirBnB, and our international suggestion was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The book analyzes American women who felt trapped by feminine standards and their domesticated roles in society. In the excerpt, The Importance of Work, from The Feminine Mystique, Friedan focuses on American women s search for human identity, which she defines as meaningful and purposeful work. • 7. Necessary Restrictions of Assault Weapons Necessary Restrictions of Assault Weapons It seems that gunmen can walk freely in schools at present. Too many murders with assault rifles and pistols happened in campus. The Americans laying down under gunfire are not troopers patrolling in Middle East threating by terrorism, but children having classes and playing with friends in campus. Every police officer and nurse cannot forget the tears left on faces of who can never see the sun of tomorrow and even celebrate their 10 year birthdays. Arguments about an old topic of limiting guns and weapons are now rising again; but this time, parents turn to be main supporting force of such prohibition. Emphasizing the right of owning weapons, which is protected by US Constitution, or at least, an amendment, some people are still the resisting power against any forms of restriction of firearms. However, even ignoring the fact that related laws are actually outdated, some actions seem to be necessary for protecting children away from malice of weapon keepers. Therefore, the restrictions of assault weapons should be considered to put onto the agenda due to the excessive power of assault weapons, the obsolete background check system helping proliferation of firearms, and erroneous interpretation of constitution of private arms by opponents. First of all, such laws were legislated for self defense purposes of US citizens, but high power assault weapons tend to be excessive for this concept. When a supposed criminal approaches, small ... Essay on The Feminine Ideal in The Bell Jar Throughout The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath explores a number of themes, particularly regarding the gender roles, and subsequently, the mental health care system for women. Her 19 year old protagonist, Esther Greenwood, is the vessel through which Plath poses many probing questions about these topics to the reader. In the 1950s when the novel was set, women were held to a high standard: to be attractive but pure, intelligent but submissive, and to generally accept the notion of bettering oneself only in order to make life more comfortable for the significant male in her life. Esther not only deals with the typical problems faced by women in her time, but she has to experience those things through the lens of mental illness though it is up for ... Esther even states that [d]eep down, I would be loyal to Betsey and her innocent friends. It was Betsey I resembled at heart (22). Earlier in the novel, Doreen and Esther had made fun of Betsey s wholesome, goody goody personality, calling her Pollyanna Cowgirl (6) behind her back. Even though Esther was originally awed by Doreen s boldness, she feels naturally compelled to stay true to the clean, innocent lifestyle preferred for women in the 1950s. Esther s judgmental attitude is not just reserved for her peers. She also makes decisions about the adults she encounters including her superiors and mentors based upon their physical attractiveness. When Esther first brings up Jay Cee, her boss at the magazine, she describes her as plug ugly (6), and then goes on to describe her accomplishments as if they were much less significant than they really were. The Hundred Years War was between France and England from 1337 to 1453 over the succession to the French throne. When Charles IV of France died without sons in 1328, his closest male relative was King Edward III of England. Isabella of France claimed the French throne for her son, but the French rejected it. This new belief changed society drastically and made for a strong and powerful monarch in both France and England. Because of these new believes army sizes grew which in turn caused more deaths but also increased manpower for the king. • 17. Importance Of National Self-Determination In Africa In African contexts, an emphasis was given to the fact that national self determination meant self determination of the people against the colonial landlords. The nation didn t oppose so much another nation as it did the colonial autocratic ruler (xxx, xxx). But what seems more important is the fact that when the colonial power finally realized the need to prepare their colonies for self government, they did so within the framework established by the colonial state (xxx, xxx). The colonial state thus became equated not only with its physical attributes (territory and population) but also with its bureaucracy, the nervous center from which stemmed ail decisions affecting the country (xxx, xxx). National self determination also found its ultimate expression, not in continental Pan Africanism or broader regional units, but in the states, Africans inherited from the colonial powers (xxx, xxx). The first indications that pan Africanism had been overruled by the nationalism of individual states came during the first assembly of African independent states held in Accra in 1958. It was then that Kwame Nkrumah, who ironically until then had led the movement towards Pan Africanism, expressed the need to respect the independence, the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the newly created states in the interests of peace (xxx, xxx). The God Delusion By Richard Dawkins In his book The God Delusion (2006), British evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins asserts that if the entire evidence in the world favored creationism, he would immediately recognize and shift his stance on the issue. However, he also notes that as of now, the immense amount of accessible evidence supports the theory of evolution. Dawkins establishes his stance on the creation of the universe based on the side that has provides the most evidence. This reflects the basis on which science relies on evidence along with the fact that the acceptance or rejection of a scientific idea depends upon the evidence relevant to it (B.A. Robinsion). The biggest overlap between the two sides being the theory on which the world was created. Each cites their own evidence for their beliefs. Religion taking a side of biblical literalism that insists on the infallibility of a literal interpretation of the bible. Science taking a materialistic side where matter is the fundamental reality in the universe. Nothing has come to characterize modern science more than its rejection of appeals to God in explaining the workings of nature. (Numbers 265) Dawkins notes there s two sides, science and religion. He must choose one or the other in the conflict of the creation of the universe. He puts aside scientific bias, and claims that if evidence now heavily favored creationism he would, without hesitation, publicly change his mind. Evidence is truly the pinnacle argument in the conflict between science and religion. The chief difference is evidence. In science it s ultimately based on the observation of nature and evidence in religion is largely based on faith. In the case for science there s actual proof that you can affirm through sight that avoids skepticism. While on the side of religion, it s based on textual evidence that can t be proven but only believed in. However, these options do not give back to the earth in the way they should after the earth has fed us, drenched our thirst, built our homes, and given us a place to love; without it, we could not do any of these things. An ecologist named Susanne Wiigh Masak from Sweden has given us an alternative that will not only help the earth but then help the people in the process by providing them with a healthier place to live. The purpose of the research article (article) is to explore three specific topics regarding the communication structure of a geographically distributed software development team: the observable behavior of the organization in reference to Conway s law, difficulties encountered by geographically distributed teams, and potential solutions for these difficulties. Conway s law suggests that the resulting product of an organization will take on characteristics of the organization s communication systems. This would suggest that a large geographically segregated team, which faces communication barriers as a result, would produce a product reflective of the barriers. The article states that geographically distributed teams will face difficulty in the exchange of information. Teams must use a common language, with agreed upon attributes. These types of teams develop software systems individually, which must then work together. This would require great coordination through effective communication. The article makes the point that Conway s law dictates that teams coordinate their efforts, while Frederick Brooks suggests that this is not so easy to achieve. Advancement in communication technologies has helped to tackle some of the communication barriers that distributed teams face. The article justifies the study by stating that existing research is not clear on the benefits of applying Conway s law to this specific situation. In the UK, dividends are paid by UK quoted companies semi annually and are taxed depending on an individual`s income (Arnold, 2008 GOV.UK, 2015). According to the Financial Times (2015) however, a dividend payment to shareholders is not an obligation, in fact a business`s board of directors are able to opt whether they desire to make a dividend payment or not, depending mostly on the health of the business. If so, the dividend payment to shareholders is made from a firm`s accumulated profits or reserves pots, with the anticipation that the firm can cover this withdrawal of monetary funds by injecting further cash quickly and efficiently into the firm or shareholders may receive dividends in forms of shares, in this situation, a firm is unlikely to lose much as shareholders would be likely to reinvest into the firm. Conversely, if a firm`s board of directors opt the opposing decision, not to make a dividend payment, this is likely to be due to a firm supporting an insufficient cash flow or the monetary fund s being identified as needed urgently for more meaningful purposes, such as reducing debt (The Financial Times, 2015). • 37. Solution Of Urbanization Urbanization is an increasing number of city dwellers compared to people living in rural areas. Urban development in poor nations has resulted in multiple issues such as air pollution and health problems. Urban growth puts an enormous strain on social services. This essay will explain how rapid, uncontrolled urbanization has led to serious consequences in developing countries. Urbanization leads to several health issues. One of these problems is a rise of the epidemic. Because of a dramatical number of people, it may become more difficult to deal with an outbreak. These epidemics occur at an incredible speed, hence, controlling them must be a big question for the authorities (Berley 2016). Not only does the speed happen swiftly, but the scale of the epidemic will be out of control. For example, Angola has been experiencing a yellow fever outbreak for decades with a rapid speed (Berley 2016). It has continued to spread in the large scale until 8 million people have been vaccinated at the end of the outbreak (Berley 2016). Furthermore, urbanization leads to an increasing rate of non communicable diseases such as cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Obesity also is an example of a disease which accompanies with urban life nowadays. According to Alleyne, graduates from the University of West Indies, he said that the rate of obesity as well as diabetes went up sharply in developing countries (Alleyne 2011). Those non communicable diseases are the result of the street life and unbalanced diet of most people who live in such countries. Not only does the number of patient experience a surge, but the age of people who has been diagnosed is getting younger, even children are affected by them. (Berley 2016). Taking Caribbean as an example, obesity is increasing in this city as urban areas are expanding, and the life of people in Caribbean is changing as they are struggle with those potential fatal diseases (Alleyne 2011). Furthermore, most developing countries are poorly resourced and have a weak health systems.
