The encounter between the Old and New Worlds was characterized by conquest in which Europeans
pursued their own selfish ambitions at the cost of whole civilizations. These civilizations, in particular
the Aztec and Inca empires, were unfortunately decimated by the Spanish conquistadors. Writings
from these Spanish outsiders have played a major role in understanding the Aztec and Inca empires
since neither had extensive written documentation. However, historians have been cautious in
interpreting these texts because the conquering Spaniards may not have always accurately portrayed
these foreign cultures who they deemed inferior (Strayer 588, 601).
On occasion, some Spanish people attempted to understand these cultures. For example, Diego Duran
moved to Mexico with his family as a young boy. He learned the native Nahuatl language of the
Aztecs, became a Dominican friar, and embarked on an adventure to study the Aztec culture and
history. After interviewing Moctezuma I, the ruler of the Aztecs, Duran recorded his words in Laws,
Ordinances, and Regulations (ca. 1450). In this text, Moctezuma I describes the governing practices
and reveals the social hierarchies present in their society. For instance, the king could only being seen
in public on special occasions and rare necessary events. There were special rights for the king, prime
minister, and nobleman that were enforced. Moreover, social classes had to be separated by different
rooms within the royal palace, and people were not allowed to enter in rooms outside of their social
class. Additionally, if a lower class citizen built a two story house, and if anyone committed adultery
or was a thief, they received the death penalty, which could only be declared by the king. Europeans
were used to large empires and had come across harsh emperors. Furthermore, not a lot of social

obviously greatly feared the brutal tribute system. However not only war captives were sacrifices,
common adults and children were also sacrificed at times. Cortes himself was disgusted at the thought

Two characters that really show that money does not buy happiness: Megan and Rhodes, a cop who

Almost all movies have characteristics that categorize them in two or more genres. A great example of
this being Unforgiven. The film s dark and cynical characters occasionally resemble that of a film noir
while its overall narrative structure depicts itself as a classical western style film. While there is an
argument to call Unforgiven a film noir, it is hard to deny the idea that the film is mainly a film of the
western genre. The basis of this idea, mostly relies on the portrayal of the lead protagonist, and the end

Christ of Latter day Saints is one of a few odd Christian religions. Many of its practices have created
much persecution and political reaction, polygamy being one of these. It created much social and
political persecution of the Mormons.
Most of this persecution had come from anti polygamist Christians. This is ironic because the anti
polygamists believed in the Bible, but not polygamy, one of its teachings. Many of God s righteous

7). The news spread quickly, and the persecution returned at an even greater intensity.
Social persecution quickly turned into political persecution. On October 30, 1838, Governor Lilburn
Boggs issued the Extermination Order in which he wrote that the Mormons must be treated as enemies
and must be exterminated or driven from the state, if necessary, for the public good. (Benton 787) A
few days later at Haun s Mill, 17 Mormons were killed and many others, including women and
children, were severely wounded (Benton787). In October 1838, the Missouri state militia was
marching toward the Saints in Kirtland, Ohio:
Anxious to avoid bloodshed, Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Parley P. Pratt, Lyman White and George
Robinson went to negotiate with state officials under the flag of truce. Instead of treating the group
with respect, however, militia officials seized the group. An order was issued to have Joseph and the
others shot, but Colonel Alexander Doniphan, a secondary Missouri officer, courageously refused to
carry out the order. Instead of court martial and execution, the prisoners were taken on November 2 to

While the prohibition movement of the early twentieth century was brought on with a wholesome and
moral mindset, the economic, political, and cultural factors relating to its origins and enactment
untimely doomed it for failure. Such groups as the Women s Christian Temperance Union and the
progressive party argued that drinking was the cause of political corruption, crime, bad labor
conditions, and a declining sense of family values. These groups protests and rallies gained enormous
support quickly for a constitution amendment as early as 1913 with the Jubilee Convention. Before the
Eighteenth Amendment officially declared the U.S as a dry country, prohibition was already in effect

lives of many Americans. Many hoped that prohibition would be the moral reform that would

Panopticism is a social theory named after the panopticon , which was originally developed by the
French philosopher, Michel Foucault. Panopticon was first mentioned in his book, Discipline and
Punish. In his book, he refers panopticon to an experimental laboratory of power in which behaviour
could be modified. Foucault considered panopticon as a symbol of the disciplinary society of
surveillance (Panopticism). In the two novels, Nineteen Eighty Four and Frankenstein, panopticism is
an element shown greatly. Though these two novels have many differences, this similarity shared
between the two is equally important.
Panopticism is the main element of the novel Nineteen Eighty Four. In the novel, it shows the
dystopian life where the government, or the Party has all the power, and they carefully monitor their
citizens 24/7 with the use of telescreens, which is a television and a security camera (Orwell 5). The
Party monitors the inner party and outer party only because they are what is important, unlike the
proles whom the Party does not monitor at all. Winston mentions numerous times If there is hope it
lies in the proles (Orwell 80). The proles take up 85% of the population of Oceania, therefore if there
were to be a revolution the proles could destroy the Party.
In the novel Frankenstein, panopticism is shown immediately when the monster is created. The
monster has a prominent effect over Frankenstein and his actions. Frankenstein is terrified of the
monster and what he could potentially do to him and his family, he knows his creation is much larger
and stronger than he is. Although, the monster knows without Frankenstein the wish for him to have a
mate would be gone. Throughout the novel, the monster is always steps behind Frankenstein,

Frankenstein, in one scene the monster says to Frankenstein You are my creator; but I am your master;

Also, the author based the legend in the story off of a real sailor s tale. As previously stated, the legend
this uses features the ghost ship The Flying Dutchman, a name that people have used over and over
again. Although Jacques changed parts of the legend a bit to fit the series, it introduces the reader to a
whole new world of stories. Adapting a legend adds a whole new depth to the story, as it makes the
narrative so appealing. Personally, I had never heard of this legend before, but the first novel actually
made me want to learn more about that time period and the legends mariners would tell of the
mysteries of the sea. Known for his skill in writing the Redwall books, Brian Jacques carried this style
over into the Castaways series. He uses vivid figurative language, exquisite vocabulary, exceptional
dialogue techniques, and creates memorable characters all throughout the whole series. In The Angel s
Command, the very first sentence of the book reads, Great and golden, like an enormous, newly
minted doubloon, the Caribbean sun presided over the waterfront. From merely the first sentence, the
reader can see how amazing Jacques writes, using similes and excellent vocabulary. Yet he doesn t
write with words that no one can even read, let alone understand. Jacques does a fine job writing with
words that are the slightest bit complex that it increases the reader s vocabulary, yet they know what
they are reading.
