The Role Of Choice In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
The Threat and Prestige of Choice Mankind has assumed the role of Godlike power that was once left
in the hand of deities. As a soldier walks onto a battlefield the power that he holds is in the barrel of
the gun. He makes the decisions whether to pull the trigger or not. He makes his way towards the
enemy s base and sees a target. He fires. The power that that soldier had was once only associated
with God. That God has the ability to bring people into this Earth as well as to take people from it.
With mankind s divine powers comes great responsibility. This is what John Steinbeck is emphasizing
in his 1962 Nobel Prize speech. He believes that because human s have taken Godlike power, we must
seek responsibility for our actions. He ties this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This decision that George has to make is not one he wants to do, but one he has to do. While in hiding
George contemplates, And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close
to the back of Lennie s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He
pulled the trigger (Steinbeck 106). This quote relates to Steinbeck s nobel speech because they both
relate to the idea that choice is a pain and a virtue. As Steinbeck states in his speech, The danger and
glory and the choice rest finally in man. The test of his perfectibility is at hand. Having taken Godlike
powers, we must seek in ourselves for the responsibility and the wisdom we once prayed for some
deity might have (John Steinbeck Banquet Speech). This quote from Steinbeck s speech and the quote
from Of Mice and Men are linked through the idea that choice is both a pain and a virtue, and that
with choice comes responsibility and wisdom. George s decision to shoot Lennie is a test of
perfectibility in George s morals if killing Lennie is the right or wrong thing. George is taking Godlike
powers as he contemplates whether to take George from this world.

Sarbanes Oxley And Fraud Research Paper
Introduction Fraudulent behavior is an increasingly popular choice of lifestyle that everyday affects
the lives of millions, whether they are the perpetrator or the guiltless party both expose themselves to
unwarranted future lifestyles. Undisclosed bonuses and salaries demonstrate the degree of unfairness
that exists behind closed doors. Today, this research paper will focus on the importance of Sarbanes

other type of employee facing the possibility of being a victim of fraud.

Essay about The Fifth Discipline
The Fifth Discipline
Chapter 11 of Peter Senge s book, The Fifth Discipline, talks about the idea of Shared Vision, and how
this concept has transformed organizations, and individuals working for them, into a cohesive unit of
long term innovative achievement.
Having and transmitting a successful shared vision requires true buy in on the part of the employees
and the organization as a whole, and must foster genuine commitment and active enrollment in order
to bring that organizational vision to a personal level. For shared vision to become a product of
personal vision, each individual must feel it , and be able to see how this vision can be articulated to
promote the long term interests of the company s success, and ... Show more content on

The owners and coaches can only do so much to prepare the team for the game, it is up to the team to
be able to mentally and physically execute and be able to win the game. The vision in this case is
coming form the middle so to speak. John Elway isn t the president of the team, but he is one of the
major motivating forces of the ball club. His personal vision started last year when he wanted to lead
his team to and win the Super Bowl for the first time in his career, and at least sometime before he
retired. He accomplished this and already this year he is talking about when our team is 16 and 0 , like
it is definitely going to happen. This team is electric and you can see it in the way they are all playing.
Nobody gives in even a little, even deep into the fourth quarter where other teams defenses begin to
tire. Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, and the whole team are rallying around this vision and show no
signs of letting up, as they go into the last part of the season, which is usually the most difficult as
teams are plagued by injury and mental fatigue. John Elway is really instrumental in all this as he
continually looks forward, articulating his vision, and setting future goals, both of which are clearly
shared by the whole team.
It is just this sort of visionary leadership and team coherence that has intoxicated the whole
organization. They know they must get to 16 and 0, and fulfill the dreams

Source of Value Creation
While in table 2 is illustrated, where the additional value from an increased leverage is going, we now
have a closer look at where the change in value is coming from. For this purpose, we divide the free
cash flow of the firm into pure business flows and cash flows resulting from financing effects and
discount them at a consistent rate reflecting the cash flows risk.
As shown in table 3, the total value of cash flow is increasing if debt is augmented. It is also obvious
that this increase in value is generated by the cash flows resulting from financing effects. But how
does this gain come about? In fact, table 3 illustrates one of the most important theories in corporate
finance, which says that the value of a levered firm is equal to the value of an unlevered firm plus the
present value of the tax shield provided by debt (Copeland, Weston and Shastri, 2005, p. 562).
Since the tax authority treats interest going to the bondholders differently from the way it treats
earnings going to stockholders, there emerges a difference in the tax payment the firm has to fulfil.
Actually, the firm s tax payment is positively related to its debt, as the interest is not taken into
account by corporate taxation while earnings after interest but before taxes are taxed at the existing tax
rate (which in this case is 35%). The increased value of the total cash flow in table 3 arises therefore
from the so called tax shield associated

Humor In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
When we think of the genre comedy, our immediate thought is usually movies that generate gales of
laughter such as Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988) or great performances by comedians like
Charlie Chaplin and Steve Carell. Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not
archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic
elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). I will begin by citing
specific examples from the movie, with references to the three theories of humor. Subsequently, I will
discuss how humor impacts the implicit meaning of the film.
Before delving into examples of the three theories of humor (superiority, relief and incongruity), ...

Dr. Indiana Jones, the charismatic archeologist, is poisoned by his enemies in a nightclub and is in dire
need of the antidote. The nightclub singer and leading actress of the film, Willie, has her eyes fixated
on an enormous dazzling diamond. In a turn of events, both the diamond and the antidote fall into the
enemy s hands. A gun goes off and in the brawl that ensues, both prized possessions fall to the ground.
The nightclub attendees chaotically scramble, causing the diamond and antidote to be tossed around
the floor. Both protagonists frantically jump to the ground, but Willie prioritizes the diamond, leaving
Indy, who is on the verge of death, to desperately fight his foes and find his antidote. In a comedic
manner, the respective items keep slipping from the grasp of the desperate duo. Willie comes in close
range of the diamond before a bucket of ice cubes tips over and surrounds the diamond, much to the
amusement of the audience! The scene humorously plays out a situation of life and death, which in
reality is a somber circumstance. This is a clever use of relief theory of Humor, generating laughter
through stress release during an otherwise emotionally turbulent

when turning it on. This way of internet connectivity will not drain the battery of a smartphone.

The Importance Of Food Security In The Philippines
About 7 million Filipinos in 2015 have resorted to open defecation 85% of which are from rural areas
without toilet facilities. This poses a threat to the safety of food and quality of drinking water (WHO,
2016). Although there is a valuable abundance of life and resources, the Philippines is paradoxically
afflicted with various complications and barriers to fully access and sustainably use the natural
resources available. The lives of Filipinos are thus categorized by an adversity that is persistent
throughout the world even with recent progressive developments. Despite being one of the fastest
growing economies in Southeast Asia in recent years, declines in poverty were modest, leaving
marginalized groups such as women, children and the elderly vulnerable to hunger and poverty. This
rapid economic growth, however, does not necessarily translate to better conditions when combined
with other factors such as nutrition and food security (WFP, 2016). The country is managing to the
best of its abilities to concentrate on the underlying issues threatening food security. Of those issues,
the most encompassing is the lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation, which debilitates a
population s ability to survive, actively work, and produce food. In attempt to address this issue, strict
government enforcement of standards, non governmental intervention with affordable technology or
means of sanitation, and education is necessary for improving the lives Filipinos.

Qualitative Research For Dunkin Donuts
In this part of the research, I will discuss the role of qualitative research in helping Dunkin Donuts
expand further in the World.
Qualitative research refers to the process whereby researchers try to find out simply what exists ,
rather than how much . Qualitative research aims to develop initial ideas or insights to provide
direction for any further research needed. It deals with the range of customer attitudes towards a
product, rather than measuring what percentage of people hold a particular attitude (Lindridge et
al.2010).
Qualitative research uses the form of an interview with open ended questions for researching and

A Review On The Minds Of Ceo
Straight from the CEO
A Review of the Literature The minds of CEO s are, in aggregate, a tremendous center of power in
society. Upon these minds how they tick, how they prioritize, how they view the vectors of change
depends on the transmission of know how, technology, capital, and jobs. In addition, as globalization
increases, the socioeconomic impact of their thoughts becomes all the greater .
This provides a broad cross sample of the global CEO population. Insightful interviews have been
collected, which contain lessons from both the brawny companies that have been forced to reinvent
themselves, as well as from some of the brainy upstarts that needed to be rather unconventional to
gain access to the global playing field. CEO s of top world corporations tell how they handle
globalization, customer service, motivation, leadership and other management issues.
Gone is the day of the stern looking, tight lipped, antisocial dark suit who sits positioned in the large
corner office secured by twelve foot walnut doors with gold handles. Today s workers demand
involvement and interaction from upper management, no longer do the babyboomers see fit to have P
and L figures discussed between upper management only. In order to be a successful CEO in today s
society you must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of value enhancement, to
be aware of opportunities and to exploit them. The future and success of the company depends on how
you view the company

Gorham Family Structure
Hello everyone, I live in Gorham Maine. The maps indicate that ACS 2013 in Gorham, has a total of
2,156 households with 1,176 of those to be married couples. Of those 539 households with married
couples have one or more children living at home under the age of 18 (Social Explorer, 2013). My
family household is myself, my husband of 23 years, and our 15 year old daughter. We have a 21 year
old daughter who lives on her own currently in Colorado. I think the changes in family has to do with
how families have changed to now recognize families of same sex couples. This is a huge leap from
the 1950 s model of a nuclear family of husband, wife, and their children (New York University

Dreams Of Avarice In Niall Ferguson s The Ascent Of Money
Dreams of Avarice In the first episode of The Ascent of Money, a man by the name of Niall Ferguson
was set out to explain how powerful money was. Money has the ability to turn you into a powerful
individual, but it can also crush you. Like Ferguson stated, the power of finance is everywhere we
look and it affects all of our lives . Everyone needs to eat, everyone needs a place to live, and
everyone needs transportation to and from work and school. We all need money to provide for
products and services we use on a daily basis and that is what Ferguson is trying to get across. We can
t escape the the use of money. If we go back 500 years in history, we can look at one of the preeminent
societies in South America, the Inca Empire. The Inca s had no real concept of money, but they did
value rare metals such as gold and silver. The unit of value in the Inca Empire was labor. Later,
Francisco Pizarro and his team of Conquistadores came to South America in search one of thing,
money. After the Conquistadores defeated the Inca army at the Battle of Cajamarca they headed over
to Potosí, which is now a city in Bolivia, where they discovered the mountain of Cerro Rico. Here, the
Conquistadores had found the jackpot. Within their 250 years of rule the Spaniards had extracted more
than two billion ounces of silver. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Elizabeth I, Monarch Of England, And Marie De L ...
Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and
other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth s role as a queen came at a
time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie s role as a missionary in New
France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of these
writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial task of
ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both writers utilize
religion to accomplish their various duties.
Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native s understanding of religion to build a
relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630 s as a missionary from
her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found
similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn t have a God, they had their own
forms of worship. In Letter 65 to her son, she answers his questions regarding the Savages beliefs on
divinity. Certain ones adored the sun and offered its sacrifices. Others had recourse to certain spirits
who they said provided over the woods but all obeyed their dreams as a divinity (Marie, 368). Even
though the Natives did not have any exposure to the True God before they met the Europeans, they

The Vietnamese Youth Development Center
Never have I been so wrong in judging the Vietnamese American community. In my mind, the model
minority myth has always been in place and completely stable. I never knew that a majority of
Vietnamese American youth experienced gang related violence, extreme poverty, numerous
stereotypes, and even depression. I never knew how common all of these problems were within their
community. In addition, their problems existed even within their own families through generational
conflicts and cultural differences. These problems are real, and occur within real families, real
communities. These problems are overlooked by almost everyone, and it saddened me that barely
anyone bothered to address these problems. It was then, that I realized that I was part of the problem. I
needed to be aware of what is going on around me, and what I have to do to help. I must analyze and
address the problem. The Vietnamese Youth Development Center is an organization that provides
assistance for refugees and immigrants, typically low income families. These youth are experiencing
problems with their mental health, gang violence and racism, poverty, and problems with their familial
relationships. The Vietnamese Youth Development Center helps to alleviate some of these struggles,
and provides various programs that help with increasing awareness, remediating torn relationships,
and educating. One major problem has to do with gang related violence. The solution to this is quite

As the result, there is no turning back and it might cause huge changes of the process. Weaknesses:
https://www.cms.gov/Research Statistics Data and Systems/CMS Information
Technology/XLC/Downloads/SelectingDevelopmentApproach.pdf However, there are lots of
weaknesses for Waterfall during development. The Waterfall model is not flexible and it s too slow
and costly because of the process cannot be changed and need to ensure each step finish before move
to next one. Because of this structure, the process cannot move backward and relay on the design and
documentation in the beginning, for example, it will be difficult and might need to start from
beginning again if clients want to change their requirements. During the development, there will be no
test for the program (only basic test) so some bugs or problems can t be found until system test step
and they need to fix the bugs and problems based on capacity. It wastes lots of time to update all
documentation, in addition, some specifications will be difficult for users to read and understand.

Waterfall can work well when everything is following the plan because the model rely on all
specification and documentation which finished before implement it, in another word, it s easy to

As the saying goes no good deed goes unrewarded....
As the saying goes no good deed goes unrewarded. Coleridge, in his poem The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner, tells a story that no evil deed shall go unpunished. For every action there is an appropriate
consequence equal to or greater than the original action. In the poem, The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner, Coleridge explains this through the crime committed by the ancient Mariner and the
consequences forced upon him for his actions as seemed fit by the spiritual world.
The albatross had flown to the side of the Mariner s ship and guided the ship through the fog. At
lengths did cross an albatross through the fog it came; As if it had been a Christian soul, we hailed it in

I believe that the events to fall upon the ancient mariner are consequences for blessings he destroyed.
The second punishment was more of a physiologic punishment placed upon the Ancient Mariner
instead of a physical one. Life and death soon appear and play a game of chance to determine the
fortune of the Mariner and his crew. the game is done, I ve won. (43). Winning the game apparently
means survival as death takes the lives of the two hundred men aboard the ship. Life in death
nonetheless blesses the Mariner with eternal life. This had become his punishment because the
Mariner could no longer pray, sleep, and every day must live with the agonizing loss of his men
aboard his now forsaken ship. Alone, Alone, all, all alone, Alone on a wide wide sea! And never a
saint took pity on My soul in agony. (236 39). It is clear that the Ancient Mariner is being punished by
the divine. In the same way the Mariner killed the Albatross the spiritual forces are in a way killing
him. The Albatross is dead and now the Ancient Mariner is metaphorically dead also. This is apparent
as the Mariner has been isolated in the middle of the ocean where everything all around him is the
same and lifeless. Just as if he were to be dead and buried in the ground, there would be dirt to his left
and to his right without a single soul to keep him company. The only way for the Mariner to ease his

I am graduating senior at The Pennsylvania State University studying for a bachelor s degree in Hotel,
Restaurant, and Institutional Management. A required course for most students is English 202, which
covers communication with employers. One of our main assignments is to write an informative report
on two careers, those two companies, and an affiliated group to our industry. This report is a tool for
me as well as a demonstration to my peers, because one of my goals is to teach my classmates how to
do this and its importance.
I will research and analyze two careers and companies in the hospitality industry which are an interest
to me. This informative report will allow me to research a prospective company. This is beneficial for
when I speak with these companies because an educated interviewee will stand out more to a recruiter,
which may aid me in their decision process.
Applying for a career is a major personal decision and most be handled that way. With that said, I

position. My personal list involves:

The principles of speech and communicative composition of advertising text slogans can be utilized
when texts of advertising are compiled in the sphere of practical promotion, which has acquired new
stimuli for development in recent years. Being a linguistic and semiotic unit, an advertising slogan can
be analyzed from the standpoint of several aspects: structural, semantic, stylistic, communicative and
pragmatic. This work consists of three chapters, and each of the chapters is dedicated to the analysis of
a certain aspect or aspects. However, analyses of different aspects of an ad slogan often overlap, and
therefore, it does not seem reasonable to carry out separate analyses of each aspect, which can be done
more efficiently by simultaneous approach. The work consists of introduction, three chapters,
conclusion, bibliography and appendix. The Introduction gives explanation of the choice of the subject
and the terms used in the work, describes the objectives and means of their attaining, as well as the
basic concepts investigated, justifies the importance, scientific novelty, theoretical and practical value
of the work. Chapter 1 (Concept of advertising as an act of communication) describes the general
concepts of the advertising discourse and communication system, and gives an outline of
extralinguistic factors involved. Chapter 2 (Language

My Thoughts on Marijuana Essay
My Thoughts on Marijuana
What Is Marijuana, a drug obtained from dried and crumpled parts of the ubiquitous hemp plant
Cannabis sativa (or Cannabis indica). Smoked by rolling in tobacco paper or placing in a pipe. An
estimated 200,000,000 persons for pleasure, an escape from reality, or relaxation, also otherwise
consume it worldwide.
Marijuana is known by a variety of names such as kif in Morocco, dagga in South Africa, and bhang
in India. Common in the United States, marijuana is called pot, grass, weed, Mary Jane, bones, etc.
The main active principle of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol. The potency of its various forms ranges
from a weak drink consumed in India to the highly potent hashish. The following consists of pure ...

The available data suggested, this is not so, Marijuana occasionally produces acute panic reactions or
even transient psychoses. Furthermore, a person driving under the influence of marijuana is a danger
to themselves and others. If smoked heavily and a great deal of consistency, its use has been clearly
associated with mental breakdown. In many persons who smoke chronically, the drug reinforces
passivity and reduces goal directed, constructive activity. The chronic use of pure resin (hashish) has
been associated both with mental deterioration and criminality. One of the major complications of
marijuana use is the tendency on the part of some users to progress to more dangerous drugs. Users in
economically deprived areas usually go on to heroin, whereas more affluent individuals tend to move
from marijuana to more potent hallucinogens such as LSD. There is no established medical use for
marijuana or any other cannabis preparation.
In the United States, its use is a crime and the laws governing marijuana are similar to those regulating
heroin. Many authorities now urge that the laws be modified to mitigate the penalties relating to
conviction on marijuana possession charges. The Case For Legalizing Marijuana Use The United
States stands apart from many nations in its deep respect for the individual. The strong belief in

Compare And Contrast Jefferson And Hamilton
Jefferson vs Hamilton Alexander Hamilton had a very organized plan for the development of the
United States government, a federalist that had strong ideas that would help the government achieve a
greater purpose. Which required a solid central government with two main points like interest of
commerce and industry. Being something that wavered in the air at that time that needed to be
corrected to improve the government, so Hamilton figured. Hamilton married into the Schuyler family
who was very rich and was the urban mercantile interests of seaports. Hamilton foundation of Order,

Jefferson had different views and often spoke on rural and southern interests. Believing that it was a
way to make change without having to go as far as the federalist were trying to take it. Basically
taking rights that the people deserved. Jefferson was hell bent on freedom which was a major issue at
that time, but compared to debt it was second to last and or actually last on most lists. The fact that
Jefferson stood up for what he believed in made him and Hamilton alike in a lot of ways. For the
people both stood for. Jefferson was more so casual to some issues that Hamilton had. Certain things
stated in the Constitution he felt would had been taken away if Hamilton enforced his plan. Jefferson
also stood of for the poor. Jefferson also spoke on Hamilton s monetary policies surpassing the rights
that was established in the Constitution. Jefferson knew Hamilton was for the rich instead of the poor.

Hypotheses On the Origin of Birds Essay
Hypotheses On the Origin of Birds
Since the advent of the theory of evolution the origin of birds has been a thriving topic in science.
Many ideas and hypotheses have been presented, but only two stand today: that birds are descendents
of ancient thecodont stem reptiles, and that birds are the direct descendents of a group of dinosaurs
known as the coelurosaurs. Both hypotheses pose many interesting and insightful ideas based on
information obtained from the fossil record. There is not enough evidence at this time to determine
which hypothesis, if either, is right. Only more hard work by scientists will tell. Until then we have
only speculation, but speculation based in observed evidence.
The origin of birds is one of the great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Theropods are a diverse group of bipedal saurischian dinosaurs (see cladogram). They include the
largest terrestrial carnivores ever to have walked the earth. Several characters typify a theropod:
hollow bones, three main fingers on the manus (hand), and three main (weight bearing) toes on the pes
(foot). Most theropods had sharp, recurved teeth useful for tearing flesh, and claws were present on
the ends of all of the fingers and toes (Hutchinson 2000). It is thought that birds are descendents of the
group of theropods known as the coelurosaur or maniraptora. (There is debate as to whether these two
groups should be one, so for the sake of this paper, I will refer to them as coelurosaurs.) This group
can be typified by such species as Velociraptor and Deinonychus (Hutchinson 2000).
The other hypothesis is that birds arose much earlier than dinosaurs from a group known to be the
ancestors of theropods: the thecodonts (Dingus and Rowe 1998). Thecodonts were small, agile reptiles
with long tails and short forelimbs, thought to include the ancestral stock of all other archosaurs,
including birds, all dinosaurs, pterosaurs (extinct flying reptiles), and crocodilians (Anonymous 2000).
The Theropod Hypothesis
The theropod hypothesis puts the entry of birds into the evolutionary arena after the line of descent
had continued from thecodonts to the saurischian dinosaurs and their subsequent split into

In the ancient Greek landscape construction, strict symmetry mainly. Alleyways and parks are

The Body Shop
Based on our projections for the years 2002 2004, the biggest driver that effects debt is the company s
operating expenses. Based on the history of the upward trend of operating expenses, our
recommendation is that The Body Shop needs to concentrate on lowering the operating expenses, and
keeping those expenses around 45% or lower in order to avoid borrowing money. Our 45%
recommendation includes a safety net which will prevent having The Body Shop borrowing cash if
sale do not continue to climb at a significant rate.

For current assets for each of the following three years, we are projecting the same percentage of 32%

Apparatus:
0.100 M standard solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
Household vinegar (CH3COOH)
Phenolphthalein indicator
Distilled water
200ml volumetric flask
250 ml conical flask
20ml volumetric pipette

Method:
Before the commencement of the practical, all necessary glassware and measurement tools were
rinsed appropriately. The pipette was rinsed three times with vinegar solution, whereas the volumetric
flask was rinsed three times with distilled water. 20mL of the vinegar solution was measured and
transferred to the volumetric flask, where it was diluted with distilled water by filling the flask to the
200mL graduation line. A 20ml aliquot of the aforementioned solution was extracted from the
volumetric flask via the volumetric pipette and subsequently transferred to the conical flask. Three
drops of phenolphthalein indicator were then added. The burette was filled with the provided NaOH
solution of 0.1M, with volume measurements taken from the bottom of the meniscus. The conical
flask was placed under the burette, from which a rough titration of the vinegar solution began.
Titrations halted once a permanent color change was visible in the conical flask. This process was
repeated until three concordant titre values were obtained.

Measuring Economic Participation and Social Protection
Gender discrimination has always been a problem that affected our society, where women were and
continue to be treated inferior to men and were downgraded to do domestic work. Although there have
been several reforms in trying to lower inequality against women because of the now known great
importance to the development of society, it still, nonetheless plagues our society. The promotion of
gender equality is co existent with social protection and the first step to combating gender inequality,
while simultaneously combating problems related to poverty and education. Inequality does not only
exist in the form of gender inequality, but also in income distribution as well, where the top quintile of
the population consumes far more than the bottom quintile of the population. The existence of unequal
income distribution can potentially lead to aristocracy, in which a few members or countries have
control over most resources and income (Thomas Caroll Associates, 2013). Dubner and Levitt as cited
by Thomas Caroll and Associates use a classic example of the Black Disciples, in which gang
members received a mere $3.30 per hour, with minimum wage being $5.15 and over half of the
income was received by gang leader. The members forfeited the chance of earning the higher income
with the probability of becoming the next gang leader; however 1 of 4 died in their pursuit of
becoming gang leaders. This application can be used in real life, where wealth is concentrated among

Nintendo s Disruptive Strategy
Nintendo Disruptive Strategy Video game industry is synonymous with names like Sony, Microsoft,
and Nintendo. A number of changes have been witnessed in the video game industry with respect to
competition and technology. Atari, a U.S. based company, and Namco from Japan are some of the
undisputed initial players in the video game industry. They literally brought the video games to
teenagers who accessed them in the shopping malls and video games arcades. Home consoles however
made it possible for video game lovers to play video games within the confines of their homes. The
introduction of personal computers in the 80s nearly revolutionized the video game industry. However,
the introduction of personal computers had no significant impact on the video game industry as the
proprietors still achieved steady growth. Video game consoles client base was kind of confined to
teenagers. Sony managed to penetrate the video gaming market save for their insightful targeting and
positioning, image conscious branding, and super graphic technologies. These made PS very popular
in the mid 90s. In fact, the entry of Sony into the video gaming market spelt some doom to video
game consoles because they captured new players. The industry subsequently grew substantially.
Video gaming became the ultimate entertainment especially among the young adults who had
disposable incomes (Farhoomand, 2009). When SONY launched PS2 in 2000, Microsoft felt that it
could also eat part of the cake and

America s The Great Melting Pot
America the great melting pot. Some have argued that the melting pot analogy is inaccurate. Instead
America is like a tossed salad. A person can see all the individual ingredients that make up the salad.
People will argue of what can go into a salad and what cannot go into just as people will argue about
the place of certain groups with America. Some find disgust in certain groups of people and praise
other. The situation is dynamic. The way people interact with groups are constantly changing and
morphing due to different influences. Antisemitism is one of the ways people interact with the tossed
salad that is America. Antisemitism in United States is on a decline because other groups are being
used as scapegoats instead, Jews are not seen to pose a threat, a strong Holocaust remembrance, and
the hatred of African Americans continues to be the predominate form of hate in the American context.
The FBI website lays out the numbers. The site has hate crime statistics up to 2014. In 2014 there
were 609 anti Jewish biased hate incidents compared to 1,621 Anti Black or African American
incidents. The 609 number is down almost 300 from the 887 Anti Jewish incidents in 2010. Hate
Incidents overall decreased from 2010 to 2014. In 2010 there were 6,628 incidents. In 2014 there were
5,479. Although hate crimes overall have decreased, Anti Jewish incidents are decreasing faster in
terms of percentage. From 2010 to 2014 Anti Jewish incidents decreased approximately 31 percent.

The Pros And Cons Of The Ivy League
The Ivy League is a group of eight private universities located in the Northeastern region of the United

universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. They are viewed as the most eminent, and ranked
among the finest universities in the world, especially in business, law, and medicine. Each school
receives millions in research grants and other subsidies from federal and state governments, and
universities like Harvard have over $34 billion in endowment funds. With small enrollment rates, that
amounts to a lot of money per student. This allows the Ivy League universities to afford the resources

Explain Where Most People In The United Kingdom
1. Explain where most people in the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, and Italy live based on
location, climate, trade? (12 Points) In the United Kingdom, I know most people live in major cities.
The North Atlantic Current warms the waters around the country creating the Marine West Coast
Climate which prevents any ice from being formed, so ports are open all year, which makes trade easy.
Most Russians will live in major cities on the western side of the Russia, because of the warm climate.
Unlike the west, eastern Russia is covered in permafrost and the Arctic Ocean is frozen parts of the
year, so trade is difficult and dangerous. Since the Rhine River flows through the eastern part of
Germany, eastern Germany is more densely populated than western Germany, because the Rhine
River is used to trade goods among many different countries. Also, the winters are not as harsh in the
east than in the west. In Italy, which is a peninsula shaped like a boot, most people live on the coast,

The Essential Preparation For Life And Career
Ancient and medieval authors believed that the seven liberal arts were propaedeutic to the study of all
topics and matters. Their belief remains evident in our school systems, as many universities and
colleges focus on providing a liberal arts education. In fact, the Dedman College at Southern
Methodist University mentions the importance of a liberal arts education in their mission statement, as
it is the essential preparation for life and career . The understanding of the seven liberal arts inspires a
broader and more focused study of materials often discussed in classes. Five of the seven liberal arts
can be directly applied to the study of Rural Matters. An understanding of geometry, arithmetic, and
astronomy is essential in gaining a deeper capacity for Rural Matters. Through Isidore of Seville s
Etymologies, we gain the understanding that without logic and grammar we would not be able to
appropriately discuss rural matters.
Isidore of Seville begins book seventeen of Etymologies, as he normally does, with the author and
creator of the topic at hand. Isidore of Seville acknowledges the uncertainty of the creator by listing
the different possibilities. According to the Greeks, Hesiod of Boeotia was the first to make skill in
writing on rural matters a part of the liberal education. According to the Romans, Cato was the first to
treat agriculture, Marcus Terence was the first to refine its study and Vergil exalted it with the skill of
his poetry (PAGE). Isidore explains

Augustus Univided Leadership
Another subsequent source that helps debunk the theory of Augustus undivided leadership is from Dio
Cassius s Roman History. This is principally accomplished as Cassius Dio, like Tacitus, mainly
focusses on Augustus s single minded need for power in relation to the rights granted by a high
majority of the people and the senate. However despite this, Cassius Dio declares that, Caesar himself
was destined to have absolute control of all matters for all time, because he was not only master of the
funds but also commanded the soldiers... Through this declaration provided by Cassius Dio, it can be
interpreted that through becoming a part of the military command Augustus could immediately have
access to power as there was a high amount of money

Is Photography A Game Of Inventing Meanings
John Berger once said, One can play a game of inventing meanings. He was conveying the idea that
when one person interprets a photograph to have a particular meaning, the same picture might have a
varying level of significance to another person. In our culture today photographs take on many roles,
both traditional and new. They are used to tell a story and are a port into a particular moment.
Photography allows us to see past initial perceptions and make connections to our everyday lives. All
photography is subjective to different views and therefore contains a set of diverse meanings. In recent
years photography has taken on a more significant role compared to past generations; it can be used to
express these diverse views, and connect people from all different cultures and backgrounds. We take
pictures of many distinct and sometimes trivial moments that have a powerful meaning to us, and that
meaning can now be shared with the world. ¨ And in life, meaning is not instantaneous. Meaning is
discovered in what connects, and cannot exist without development¨(Berger). Photography is all about
connections. The picture is captured, and then shared with others, the meaning behind it may not be
apparent right away, but gradually it comes to light the longer the image is studied and developed.
Today we take photographs to connect us with specific people in specific places at specific times.

and then Cathy chose to give her money to Aaron. Cal escaped living off the money of evil; he is the

the sins running through the family and because cal escaped the earnings from evil, he escaped the

Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress
With two completely different settings and backgrounds, most people wouldn t associate the book
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie and the short story A Walk to the Jetty by
Jamaica Kincaid. But one aspect of their way of writing ties there styles together, which is the way
they use their minor characters. Dai Sijie and Jamaica Kincaid use minor characters to help develop
the major characters by teaching them important life lessons. The authors use the minor characters
such as Luo from Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress and Annie s parents, especially her mum,
from A Walk to the Jetty to introduce new perspectives to the major characters which in turn changes
the main characters attitudes and decisions.

In Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, there is obviously a change in personality and attitude of
the Little Seamstress as she is an uneducated girl from the countryside and she learnt one thing from
Balzac which completely changed her view of the way she lives compared to the way she deserves to
live. Luo states She said she learnt one thing from Balzac: that a woman s beauty is a treasure beyond
price (Sijie p.184). By the way that Luo treated her, and everyone treated her for her beauty, in
addition to the one thing she learnt from Balzac, she gets this sense of arrogance that she believes her
beauty alone can keep her alive and give her a much better life in the city than what she was living in
the countryside, where she was never properly educated to a level where she could read or write.
Again, although the two authors use similar techniques to create development in their main characters,
the way and purpose they use minor character are completely different. Annie believed that her mum
was a hypocrite and that she didn t really love Annie, just because her mum said she could never live

Botanical Gardens, Research Paper on California Plants
California is a state of enormous diversity. From the coast to the mountains and the forests to the
deserts, California is full of a wide array of plant life. California is the third largest state in the United
States and thus has a major variation in climate resulting in the many plants found. Not only are there
many plants found here, but many of those plants cannot be found anywhere else. There are also many
nonnative plants that have become a part of the scenery in California. The best way to understand the
state s vegetation is to first understand the floristic provinces.
In North America there are 12 floristic provinces with four of those found in California (Map #1).
California itself has five major biomes, some of which can be ... Show more content on

Most chaparral plants grow mainly in the spring. They take advantage of the winter rains penetrating
to their roots and the long spring days. To cope for the dry soil in the summer plants these plants
usually cope by becoming dormant. During this time they are very susceptible to fire. The evergreen
nature of this plant allows it to keep its leaves and not use and energy to create new leaves. Because of
this they can be photosynthesizing within minutes of a summer rain. These plants have adapted to use
very little water and not lose any while at the same time trapping all the water it can. The types of oak
found at the RSABG were the California Black Oak, the Blue Oak, and the Canyon Oak (Picture #6).
These are all found in the oak woodlands biome. These trees are found all throughout of California.
From the foothills and valleys of cismontane California, around the central valley and mixed
throughout the Coast Ranges, Transverse Ranges, and Peninsular Ranges. This biome is 10 percent of
the vegetated landscape and is almost only in California. The Blue Oak is a dominant species and
endemic. The climate that these oak are found range from semiarid to both warm summer and cool
summer Mediterranean. Generally the climates are cooler and moister then the grassland and chaparral
biomes below but warmer then the coniferous forests above. Some people think that because of how
common the oak woodlands are they should be made the states

The Discrepancies of Shakespeare
Shakespeare is a world renowned playwright. Most people could describe at least of one of his plays,
poems, or sonnets. However, not many people can recall the details of his personal life. Some may
know that he was married, while others believe that he gay. Since there are so many discrepancies
concerning William Shakespeare, it can no longer be determined what the facts are and what is fiction.
The discrepancies that involve Shakespeare start with his father. John Shakespeare had come to live in
Stratford upon Avon, working as a glove maker. However, John had a long line of jobs. He was a wool
dealer and was involved in money lending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, he could have been born on the 25th and there just happened to be a baptismal on the 26th.
There are so many possibilities that one must wonder if it is right to assume a date.
Nobody knows if Shakespeare went to school or not. There are no records that Shakespeare ever
attended school. However, since no records of anyone s school attendance were generally kept, there
is no evidence against it. It is supposed, because he was the son of a leading townsman, that he
attended the King Edward VI Grammar School in Stratford. Here, his education would have consisted
of a thorough knowledge of Latin, logic and rhetoric and also history, which would have been mainly
classical, (http:168.216.219.18).This could explain Shakespeare s knowledge of history for his plays.
If William had attended school, it is probable that he left at about the age of fourteen.
William had the example of his father s success and the standing of his mother as a gentlewoman to
ignite his own ambition, and it was while he was young that his father was at the height of his
influence.
Then, the fortunes of his father mysteriously failed as he appeared to fall into financial difficulties
which led him to default on his attendance at council meetings. As for William, it is very likely that he
became apprenticed to his father s business. This is because it was the custom for young men,

The Latin Of Latin Language
The written Latin language changed minimally from the time it was used in Antiquity to the time it
was used in the Medieval Era due to it not being spoken frequently in everyday situations. Instead of
learning Latin by hearing others speak it, just as one learned Old English or French during this time,
one needed to have a connection with the Church in order to be taught the language, or they needed to
hear others speak it. The Latin taught by the Church was undeviating throughout Europe, and as a
result all students learned the same Latin for centuries. However, common people who were
uneducated still spoke the language as a second language during the early medieval era, and because
of their lack of education in the language, the grammar became less steadfast and the spelling saw
some changes. Although the written Latin language did not evolve as drastically as it had the potential
to, it underwent certain grammatical changes that were set off by Jerome s use of altered grammar in
the Latin Vulgate. Jerome borrowed constructions from the other languages the Bible had been written
in and other authors used these alterations later. As a result, these altered constructions, which had
gone unchanged for hundreds of years, were made permanent in time because the Vulgate was a
broadly used resource for Latin. If it had not been for Jerome s initial changes in the grammar of the
Latin in the Vulgate, then Latin would not have evolved and would have stayed even more similar to

Victims Of The Revolutionary Era Essay
Victims of the Revolutionary Era Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, written by Joyce
Carol Oates, portrays the fast cultural transition that heavily impacted teenager s behavior in the 1960
s. The new style of music is an example of how the rapidly cultural transition highly influenced
adolescent s behavior from that generation, initiating a revolutionary era. It was a time when culture
was rapidly changing. A sexual revolution was taking place, leading people, especially teenagers, to
question the traditional and religious beliefs of previous generations. In addition, it was a phase which
peace and love was emphasized by the ongoing Vietnam war, driving people to promote peace and
love amongst themselves for the whole decade, especially through rock and roll music. Even as the
peace and love movement arose, a series of murders occurred in Tucson, AZ. Charles Howard Schmid
Jr., a 23 year old man, brutally murdered numerous girls and made national headlines. A creepy
predator was Oates s inspiration to create the unscrupulous character: Arnold Friend. Oates creates the
perfect picture of a 1960 s typical teenager that gets caught in the middle of the revolutionary era; and
eventually becomes a victim of Arnold Friend. Connie is a 15 year old girl who lives an ordinary life;
confused about the girl she is, and the woman she is becoming. Being a teenager is not an easy thing
overall, for any girl, in any era. Furthermore, she lives in a fast paced, transitional

another pickup truck. He pled guilty to four counts of intoxication manslaughter. His attorneys
claimed that he suffered from affluenza, and the reason he drove while intoxicated was because he

What A Railgun Is It Functions, And Why It Was Created
This research paper will show and illustrate the basics of what a railgun is, how it functions, and why
it was created. From there, it will further explicitly explain some of electromagnetics and physics that
dictate the machine and its operation. Finally, a few of the arduous problems as well as what impact
the railgun might have in our future is explained.
I. Introduction
By definition, a railgun is a weapon consisting of a pair of parallel conductive rails, using a magnetic
field and electric current to launch projectiles at very high velocity (1). In other words, a railgun is an
physical apparatus that uses the basic laws of electromagnetics by taking the flow of current through a
loop to generate a Lorentz force on a bullet like projectile, which then propels it at an extremely high
velocity. The method used to generate power in some DC motors uses this same electromagnetic
theory. The concept of railguns has grown tremendously in popularity in the past couple decades,
especially after the idea of this type of weapon was shown in various television shows and movies.
The fact that makes a railgun so unique, is that no combustion process has to take place in order for
the projectile to be fired. The inefficiency of railguns, however, has highly prohibited its further
research and development.
II. Body
Almost ninety five years ago, in 1918, the French inventor named Louis Octave Fauchon Villeplee
designed the first railgun prototype. By connecting two parallel

  • 2. The Role Of Choice In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men The Threat and Prestige of Choice Mankind has assumed the role of Godlike power that was once left in the hand of deities. As a soldier walks onto a battlefield the power that he holds is in the barrel of the gun. He makes the decisions whether to pull the trigger or not. He makes his way towards the enemy s base and sees a target. He fires. The power that that soldier had was once only associated with God. That God has the ability to bring people into this Earth as well as to take people from it. With mankind s divine powers comes great responsibility. This is what John Steinbeck is emphasizing in his 1962 Nobel Prize speech. He believes that because human s have taken Godlike power, we must seek responsibility for our actions. He ties this ... While in hiding George contemplates, And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger (Steinbeck 106). This quote relates to Steinbeck s nobel speech because they both relate to the idea that choice is a pain and a virtue. As Steinbeck states in his speech, The danger and glory and the choice rest finally in man. The test of his perfectibility is at hand. Having taken Godlike powers, we must seek in ourselves for the responsibility and the wisdom we once prayed for some deity might have (John Steinbeck Banquet Speech). This quote from Steinbeck s speech and the quote from Of Mice and Men are linked through the idea that choice is both a pain and a virtue, and that with choice comes responsibility and wisdom. George s decision to shoot Lennie is a test of perfectibility in George s morals if killing Lennie is the right or wrong thing. George is taking Godlike powers as he contemplates whether to take George from this world. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today, this research paper will focus on the importance of Sarbanes Oxley and its lasting impact aiming to protect hundreds of thousands of entry level employees or any other type of employee facing the possibility of being a victim of fraud. • 4. Essay about The Fifth Discipline The Fifth Discipline Chapter 11 of Peter Senge s book, The Fifth Discipline, talks about the idea of Shared Vision, and how this concept has transformed organizations, and individuals working for them, into a cohesive unit of long term innovative achievement. Having and transmitting a successful shared vision requires true buy in on the part of the employees and the organization as a whole, and must foster genuine commitment and active enrollment in order to bring that organizational vision to a personal level. For shared vision to become a product of personal vision, each individual must feel it , and be able to see how this vision can be articulated to promote the long term interests of the company s success, and ... The owners and coaches can only do so much to prepare the team for the game, it is up to the team to be able to mentally and physically execute and be able to win the game. The vision in this case is coming form the middle so to speak. John Elway isn t the president of the team, but he is one of the major motivating forces of the ball club. His personal vision started last year when he wanted to lead his team to and win the Super Bowl for the first time in his career, and at least sometime before he retired. He accomplished this and already this year he is talking about when our team is 16 and 0 , like it is definitely going to happen. This team is electric and you can see it in the way they are all playing. Nobody gives in even a little, even deep into the fourth quarter where other teams defenses begin to tire. Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, and the whole team are rallying around this vision and show no signs of letting up, as they go into the last part of the season, which is usually the most difficult as teams are plagued by injury and mental fatigue. John Elway is really instrumental in all this as he continually looks forward, articulating his vision, and setting future goals, both of which are clearly shared by the whole team. It is just this sort of visionary leadership and team coherence that has intoxicated the whole organization. They know they must get to 16 and 0, and fulfill the dreams ... Source of Value Creation While in table 2 is illustrated, where the additional value from an increased leverage is going, we now have a closer look at where the change in value is coming from. For this purpose, we divide the free cash flow of the firm into pure business flows and cash flows resulting from financing effects and discount them at a consistent rate reflecting the cash flows risk. As shown in table 3, the total value of cash flow is increasing if debt is augmented. It is also obvious that this increase in value is generated by the cash flows resulting from financing effects. But how does this gain come about? In fact, table 3 illustrates one of the most important theories in corporate finance, which says that the value of a levered firm is equal to the value of an unlevered firm plus the present value of the tax shield provided by debt (Copeland, Weston and Shastri, 2005, p. 562). Since the tax authority treats interest going to the bondholders differently from the way it treats earnings going to stockholders, there emerges a difference in the tax payment the firm has to fulfil. Actually, the firm s tax payment is positively related to its debt, as the interest is not taken into account by corporate taxation while earnings after interest but before taxes are taxed at the existing tax

Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). This poses a threat to the safety of food and quality of drinking water (WHO, 2016). Although there is a valuable abundance of life and resources, the Philippines is paradoxically afflicted with various complications and barriers to fully access and sustainably use the natural resources available. The lives of Filipinos are thus categorized by an adversity that is persistent throughout the world even with recent progressive developments. Despite being one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia in recent years, declines in poverty were modest, leaving marginalized groups such as women, children and the elderly vulnerable to hunger and poverty. This rapid economic growth, however, does not necessarily translate to better conditions when combined with other factors such as nutrition and food security (WFP, 2016). The country is managing to the best of its abilities to concentrate on the underlying issues threatening food security. Of those issues, the most encompassing is the lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation, which debilitates a population s ability to survive, actively work, and produce food. Upon these minds how they tick, how they prioritize, how they view the vectors of change depends on the transmission of know how, technology, capital, and jobs. In addition, as globalization increases, the socioeconomic impact of their thoughts becomes all the greater . This provides a broad cross sample of the global CEO population. Insightful interviews have been collected, which contain lessons from both the brawny companies that have been forced to reinvent themselves, as well as from some of the brainy upstarts that needed to be rather unconventional to gain access to the global playing field. Everyone needs to eat, everyone needs a place to live, and everyone needs transportation to and from work and school. We all need money to provide for products and services we use on a daily basis and that is what Ferguson is trying to get across. We can t escape the the use of money. If we go back 500 years in history, we can look at one of the preeminent societies in South America, the Inca Empire. The Inca s had no real concept of money, but they did value rare metals such as gold and silver. The unit of value in the Inca Empire was labor. Later, Francisco Pizarro and his team of Conquistadores came to South America in search one of thing, money. After the Conquistadores defeated the Inca army at the Battle of Cajamarca they headed over to Potosí, which is now a city in Bolivia, where they discovered the mountain of Cerro Rico. Elizabeth I, monarch of England, and Marie de l Incarnation, a French nun, both invoked God and other forms of religious power to stake their claims to authority. Elizabeth s role as a queen came at a time when her country was going through political turmoil. Marie s role as a missionary in New France was to civilize the indigenous people. Although working to better their countries, both of these writers are vastly different due to their social positions. While Elizabeth had the substantial task of ruling over her country, Marie was serving her country as a missionary; however, both writers utilize religion to accomplish their various duties. Marie utilized her understanding of religion and the Native s understanding of religion to build a relationship built on trust. She arrived in modern day Quebec in the late 1630 s as a missionary from her country to educate and civilize the Natives there to match European traditions. Marie found similarities with the indigenous people as even though they didn t have a God, they had their own forms of worship. The Waterfall model is not flexible and it s too slow and costly because of the process cannot be changed and need to ensure each step finish before move to next one. Because of this structure, the process cannot move backward and relay on the design and documentation in the beginning, for example, it will be difficult and might need to start from beginning again if clients want to change their requirements. Winning the game apparently means survival as death takes the lives of the two hundred men aboard the ship. Life in death nonetheless blesses the Mariner with eternal life. The principles of speech and communicative composition of advertising text slogans can be utilized when texts of advertising are compiled in the sphere of practical promotion, which has acquired new stimuli for development in recent years. Being a linguistic and semiotic unit, an advertising slogan can be analyzed from the standpoint of several aspects: structural, semantic, stylistic, communicative and pragmatic. This work consists of three chapters, and each of the chapters is dedicated to the analysis of a certain aspect or aspects. However, analyses of different aspects of an ad slogan often overlap, and therefore, it does not seem reasonable to carry out separate analyses of each aspect, which can be done more efficiently by simultaneous approach. The work consists of introduction, three chapters, conclusion, bibliography and appendix. The Introduction gives explanation of the choice of the subject and the terms used in the work, describes the objectives and means of their attaining, as well as the basic concepts investigated, justifies the importance, scientific novelty, theoretical and practical value of the work. The available data suggested, this is not so, Marijuana occasionally produces acute panic reactions or even transient psychoses. Furthermore, a person driving under the influence of marijuana is a danger to themselves and others. If smoked heavily and a great deal of consistency, its use has been clearly associated with mental breakdown. In many persons who smoke chronically, the drug reinforces passivity and reduces goal directed, constructive activity. The chronic use of pure resin (hashish) has been associated both with mental deterioration and criminality. One of the major complications of marijuana use is the tendency on the part of some users to progress to more dangerous drugs. Users in economically deprived areas usually go on to heroin, whereas more affluent individuals tend to move from marijuana to more potent hallucinogens such as LSD. There is no established medical use for marijuana or any other cannabis preparation. In the United States, its use is a crime and the laws governing marijuana are similar to those regulating heroin. Many authorities now urge that the laws be modified to mitigate the penalties relating to conviction on marijuana possession charges. Many ideas and hypotheses have been presented, but only two stand today: that birds are descendents of ancient thecodont stem reptiles, and that birds are the direct descendents of a group of dinosaurs known as the coelurosaurs. Both hypotheses pose many interesting and insightful ideas based on information obtained from the fossil record. There is not enough evidence at this time to determine which hypothesis, if either, is right. Only more hard work by scientists will tell. Theropods are a diverse group of bipedal saurischian dinosaurs (see cladogram). They include the largest terrestrial carnivores ever to have walked the earth. Several characters typify a theropod: hollow bones, three main fingers on the manus (hand), and three main (weight bearing) toes on the pes (foot). Most theropods had sharp, recurved teeth useful for tearing flesh, and claws were present on the ends of all of the fingers and toes (Hutchinson 2000). It is thought that birds are descendents of the group of theropods known as the coelurosaur or maniraptora. (There is debate as to whether these two groups should be one, so for the sake of this paper, I will refer to them as coelurosaurs.) This group can be typified by such species as Velociraptor and Deinonychus (Hutchinson 2000). The other hypothesis is that birds arose much earlier than dinosaurs from a group known to be the ancestors of theropods: the thecodonts (Dingus and Rowe 1998). Thecodonts were small, agile reptiles with long tails and short forelimbs, thought to include the ancestral stock of all other archosaurs, including birds, all dinosaurs, pterosaurs (extinct flying reptiles), and crocodilians (Anonymous 2000). Measuring Economic Participation and Social Protection Gender discrimination has always been a problem that affected our society, where women were and continue to be treated inferior to men and were downgraded to do domestic work. Although there have been several reforms in trying to lower inequality against women because of the now known great importance to the development of society, it still, nonetheless plagues our society. The promotion of gender equality is co existent with social protection and the first step to combating gender inequality, while simultaneously combating problems related to poverty and education. Inequality does not only exist in the form of gender inequality, but also in income distribution as well, where the top quintile of the population consumes far more than the bottom quintile of the population. The existence of unequal income distribution can potentially lead to aristocracy, in which a few members or countries have control over most resources and income (Thomas Caroll Associates, 2013). A number of changes have been witnessed in the video game industry with respect to competition and technology. Atari, a U.S. based company, and Namco from Japan are some of the undisputed initial players in the video game industry. They literally brought the video games to teenagers who accessed them in the shopping malls and video games arcades. Home consoles however made it possible for video game lovers to play video games within the confines of their homes. The introduction of personal computers in the 80s nearly revolutionized the video game industry. However, the introduction of personal computers had no significant impact on the video game industry as the proprietors still achieved steady growth. Video game consoles client base was kind of confined to teenagers. Sony managed to penetrate the video gaming market save for their insightful targeting and positioning, image conscious branding, and super graphic technologies. These made PS very popular in the mid 90s. In fact, the entry of Sony into the video gaming market spelt some doom to video game consoles because they captured new players. Most Russians will live in major cities on the western side of the Russia, because of the warm climate. Their belief remains evident in our school systems, as many universities and colleges focus on providing a liberal arts education. In fact, the Dedman College at Southern Methodist University mentions the importance of a liberal arts education in their mission statement, as it is the essential preparation for life and career . The understanding of the seven liberal arts inspires a broader and more focused study of materials often discussed in classes. Five of the seven liberal arts can be directly applied to the study of Rural Matters. An understanding of geometry, arithmetic, and astronomy is essential in gaining a deeper capacity for Rural Matters. Through Isidore of Seville s Etymologies, we gain the understanding that without logic and grammar we would not be able to appropriately discuss rural matters. He was conveying the idea that when one person interprets a photograph to have a particular meaning, the same picture might have a varying level of significance to another person. In our culture today photographs take on many roles, both traditional and new. They are used to tell a story and are a port into a particular moment. Photography allows us to see past initial perceptions and make connections to our everyday lives. All photography is subjective to different views and therefore contains a set of diverse meanings. In recent years photography has taken on a more significant role compared to past generations; it can be used to express these diverse views, and connect people from all different cultures and backgrounds. We take pictures of many distinct and sometimes trivial moments that have a powerful meaning to us, and that meaning can now be shared with the world. ¨ And in life, meaning is not instantaneous. Meaning is discovered in what connects, and cannot exist without development¨(Berger). Photography is all about connections. The picture is captured, and then shared with others, the meaning behind it may not be apparent right away, but gradually it comes to light the longer the image is studied and developed. The best way to understand the state s vegetation is to first understand the floristic provinces. In North America there are 12 floristic provinces with four of those found in California (Map #1). California itself has five major biomes, some of which can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most chaparral plants grow mainly in the spring. They take advantage of the winter rains penetrating to their roots and the long spring days. To cope for the dry soil in the summer plants these plants usually cope by becoming dormant. During this time they are very susceptible to fire. The evergreen nature of this plant allows it to keep its leaves and not use and energy to create new leaves. Because of this they can be photosynthesizing within minutes of a summer rain. These plants have adapted to use very little water and not lose any while at the same time trapping all the water it can. The types of oak found at the RSABG were the California Black Oak, the Blue Oak, and the Canyon Oak (Picture #6). These are all found in the oak woodlands biome. These trees are found all throughout of California. From the foothills and valleys of cismontane California, around the central valley and mixed throughout the Coast Ranges, Transverse Ranges, and Peninsular Ranges. This biome is 10 percent of the vegetated landscape and is almost only in California. The Blue Oak is a dominant species and endemic. The climate that these oak are found range from semiarid to both warm summer and cool summer Mediterranean. Generally the climates are cooler and moister then the grassland and chaparral biomes below but warmer then the coniferous forests above. Some people think that because of how common the oak woodlands are they should be made the states ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. shakespeare Essay The Discrepancies of Shakespeare Shakespeare is a world renowned playwright. Most people could describe at least of one of his plays, poems, or sonnets. However, not many people can recall the details of his personal life. Some may know that he was married, while others believe that he gay. Since there are so many discrepancies concerning William Shakespeare, it can no longer be determined what the facts are and what is fiction. The discrepancies that involve Shakespeare start with his father. John Shakespeare had come to live in Stratford upon Avon, working as a glove maker. However, John had a long line of jobs. There are so many possibilities that one must wonder if it is right to assume a date. Nobody knows if Shakespeare went to school or not. There are no records that Shakespeare ever attended school. However, since no records of anyone s school attendance were generally kept, there is no evidence against it. It is supposed, because he was the son of a leading townsman, that he attended the King Edward VI Grammar School in Stratford. Here, his education would have consisted of a thorough knowledge of Latin, logic and rhetoric and also history, which would have been mainly classical, (http:168.216.219.18).This could explain Shakespeare s knowledge of history for his plays. If William had attended school, it is probable that he left at about the age of fourteen. William had the example of his father s success and the standing of his mother as a gentlewoman to ignite his own ambition, and it was while he was young that his father was at the height of his influence. Then, the fortunes of his father mysteriously failed as he appeared to fall into financial difficulties which led him to default on his attendance at council meetings. As for William, it is very likely that he became apprenticed to his father s business. This is because it was the custom for young men, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Latin Of Latin Language The written Latin language changed minimally from the time it was used in Antiquity to the time it was used in the Medieval Era due to it not being spoken frequently in everyday situations. Instead of learning Latin by hearing others speak it, just as one learned Old English or French during this time, one needed to have a connection with the Church in order to be taught the language, or they needed to hear others speak it. The Latin taught by the Church was undeviating throughout Europe, and as a result all students learned the same Latin for centuries. However, common people who were uneducated still spoke the language as a second language during the early medieval era, and because of their lack of education in the language, the grammar became less steadfast and the spelling saw some changes. Although the written Latin language did not evolve as drastically as it had the potential to, it underwent certain grammatical changes that were set off by Jerome s use of altered grammar in the Latin Vulgate. Jerome borrowed constructions from the other languages the Bible had been written in and other authors used these alterations later. As a result, these altered constructions, which had gone unchanged for hundreds of years, were made permanent in time because the Vulgate was a broadly used resource for Latin. If it had not been for Jerome s initial changes in the grammar of the Latin in the Vulgate, then Latin would not have evolved and would have stayed even more similar to the ... • 46. Victims Of The Revolutionary Era Essay Victims of the Revolutionary Era Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, written by Joyce Carol Oates, portrays the fast cultural transition that heavily impacted teenager s behavior in the 1960 s. The new style of music is an example of how the rapidly cultural transition highly influenced adolescent s behavior from that generation, initiating a revolutionary era. It was a time when culture was rapidly changing. A sexual revolution was taking place, leading people, especially teenagers, to question the traditional and religious beliefs of previous generations. In addition, it was a phase which peace and love was emphasized by the ongoing Vietnam war, driving people to promote peace and love amongst themselves for the whole decade, especially through rock and roll music. Even as the peace and love movement arose, a series of murders occurred in Tucson, AZ. Charles Howard Schmid Jr., a 23 year old man, brutally murdered numerous girls and made national headlines. A creepy predator was Oates s inspiration to create the unscrupulous character: Arnold Friend. Oates creates the perfect picture of a 1960 s typical teenager that gets caught in the middle of the revolutionary era; and eventually becomes a victim of Arnold Friend. Connie is a 15 year old girl who lives an ordinary life; confused about the girl she is, and the woman she is becoming. Being a teenager is not an easy thing overall, for any girl, in any era. • 49. What A Railgun Is It Functions, And Why It Was Created This research paper will show and illustrate the basics of what a railgun is, how it functions, and why it was created. From there, it will further explicitly explain some of electromagnetics and physics that dictate the machine and its operation. Finally, a few of the arduous problems as well as what impact the railgun might have in our future is explained. I. Introduction By definition, a railgun is a weapon consisting of a pair of parallel conductive rails, using a magnetic field and electric current to launch projectiles at very high velocity (1). In other words, a railgun is an physical apparatus that uses the basic laws of electromagnetics by taking the flow of current through a loop to generate a Lorentz force on a bullet like projectile, which then propels it at an extremely high velocity. The method used to generate power in some DC motors uses this same electromagnetic theory. The concept of railguns has grown tremendously in popularity in the past couple decades, especially after the idea of this type of weapon was shown in various television shows and movies. The fact that makes a railgun so unique, is that no combustion process has to take place in order for the projectile to be fired. The inefficiency of railguns, however, has highly prohibited its further research and development. II. Body Almost ninety five years ago, in 1918, the French inventor named Louis Octave Fauchon Villeplee designed the first railgun prototype. By connecting two parallel ...
