Neuroplasticity and Justice
Justice is often thought of in nebulous terms. As such, it is often viewed through a philosophical
lens. Indeed, justice has been examined by prominent philosophers such as John Rawls and
Friedrich Hayek. Often regarded as a soft science, the idea of justice finds itself the subject of a
theoretical framework rather than of scientific study. Despite this theoretical view, much of the
theory surrounding justice seeks to determine the causes for a given type of behavior. These
theories discuss which penological methods work to correct these behaviors. However, the theory
that one can modify his or her brain in order to create new behaviors exists within the scientific
biological/psychological realm. By contrast, there are those... Show more content on

This is concurrent with the logical, conscious reasoning of the C system that overrides the X system
s prototypes in order to closely analyze a new situation and adapt accordingly. Thus, fairness
(justice) is an extension of cognitive behavioral regulation. Akin to the sense of reparation that
Jackman (2012) discusses when one applies the concept of restorative justice, the concept of
neuroplasticity also seeks a sense of reparation, albeit in a more literal way. Consistent with the idea
of learning and the brain s interaction with the environment, neuroplasticity is the idea that the
human brain can change and grow, that it can modify itself to compensate for weak spots and
expand limits (Cockrell, 2007). For example, it was once thought that neuron production slows
down exponentially in adulthood, but research reveals that this is not the case. Research has found
that the brains of aging cancer patients were still able to produce new neurons (Cockrell, 2007). The
human brain is an extremely complex organ. Inside the average human brain, there are 200 billion
neurons. These neurons allow for trillions of connections (Arrowsmith, 2013). Arrowsmith (2013)
discussed Mark Rosenshwag, a neuroscientist who conducted an experiment with rats. Rosenswag
placed the rats in a stimulating environment and found that rats were better learners because of the
stimulation. More importantly, he noted that the brains of the rats being studied changed

Retirement Plan Essay
Mr. Jones thank you for taking the time to sit down with me and some of the members of our team
to discuss your retirement plans as well as your new business venture. After our meetings as well as
follow up with the team here the following lays our recommendations for your consideration.
Business Entity Based upon your business needs we recommend you form a C Corporation for
your new used car dealership. There are many reasons for this decision not the least of which is
tax purposes. The C Corporation is a separate entity which means the business will pay its own
taxes filing a form 1120 and you will be considered an employee eligible for a salary, bonus, and
benefits. In order to maintain this limited liability, the corporation s ... Show more content on

The expenses recorded only when the expenses are paid. This can mask how well or poorly a
business is doing since it is recognizing transactions only when money is being paid or received
and not when sales or purchases are actually made. According to IRS Publication 334 if you will
be having an inventory on hand such as the cars for your used car dealership the you must use
the accrual method. The IRS says that if your business s sales are in excess of $5 million dollars
that accrual accounting must be used. While the initial years of your business may not produce
such sales you will have an inventory of cars that will be sold to the public which then means the
sales number reduces from over $5 million to over $1 million dollars. However, there are some
exceptions such as:
Qualifying taxpayer: You are a qualifying tax payer if: o Average gross annual receipts for each
prior tax year ending on or after December 17, 1998 is $1 million or less... o Your business is not a
tax shelter... (IRS Publication 334, 2017).)
Materials and supplies that are not incidental (IRS Publication 334, 2017). But with your
corporation these would not be taken into consideration and with your corporation, Mr. Jones, the
recommendation is the accrual method of accounting. With the accrual accounting method, the
revenue is recorded when it is earned and not when the money is received. The expenses are
recorded when they occur not when the payment

Analysis Of `` Maus `` By Art Spiegelman
Walter Anderson once said, Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character
and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of
my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have life itself.
(Anderson, 2015). The graphic novel, Maus, by Art Spiegelman conveys a message similar to that
of Fitzgerald s Babylon Revisited. If a man has hope and perseverance he can realize and truly
appreciate a second chance.
The protagonist in each novel is a man who has faced great diversity, Charlie in Babylon Revisited
does so by his own accord while Vladek, in Maus, hid from the Nazi s in Poland during World War
II. Charlie made a lot of money in the American Stock Market, moved to Paris, and lived a lavish
lifestyle with his wife. They spent money like it was in endless supply. By the time the Stock
Market had crashed he lost his marriage and his daughter when they went to live with his sister
in law. Vladek and his wife were in Poland when the Nazi s invaded and desperately went from
place to place looking for a safe hiding spot. They found out who their friends were and who were
not which lead to some desperate times. In both cases the environment around these men, in
Babylon Revisited it was the Stock Market Crash and in Maus it was the Nazi s, put them in
desperate situations.

A Brief Note On Malpractice And Medical Malpractice
When I feel healthy, I m happy. Abraham Lincoln once said something in a sense that everyone
is capable of doing wrong either by accidents or on purpose. Not everybody is perfect, after all
we are human. Health care organizations, particularly hospitals, currently face numerous legal
issues, several of which will be examined in this paper. The first issue to be examined is medical
malpractice. The medical malpractice makes up one of the major legal issues encountered by
hospitals and health systems. Showalter (2012) states that with the decline of charitable immunity
in the 1970s, healthcare was one of the areas impacted by personal injury law and was held liable
for negligent acts. Today, malpractice continues to be a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this research, I will explore the ways of malpractice through physician s doctors. Patients are
usually forewarned of risk they go under, so it s a required to trust their doctors or whoever
because they expect the utmost care and minimize the risk. If a surgery goes wrong and the
patients are injured, it s the responsibility of the surgeon, staff or the hospital to take care of it.
(McCullough, Campbell Lane LLP 1998).To really sure it s a malpractice; it undergoes three
procedures, breach, injury and damages. Breach is the surgeon work, which must fell below
accepted and expected standard, breaching the duty of care owed to the patients. Basically, it s the
way the surgeon take care of the patients while under surgery. Injury is the pain the patient suffers
after the breaching, which must have not happen if the patients were properly treated. Last is the
damage, which is the injury the patient sustained, which has a negative impact on that patient, it
can be emotionally, physically and psychologically. Terrible mistakes can happen during surgery.
Each year in the U.S. alone, surgical mistakes result in tens of thousands of innocent surgical
patients suffering serious injury, paralysis, or even death. These mistakes are committed by
surgeons, surgical and hospital staff, and other health care providers. Many causes of surgical errors
are sometime inattentive or distracted surgeons

Drop Jump Experiment
Knee valgus during the drop jump test (DJT) has reliably been used to predict risk of ACL
tear1,2,3,4,5. To perform the DJT, participants stand on box that is about 40 centimeters high on
average. They are then instructed to jump off the box, landing with both feet on the ground,
followed by a maximum vertical jump. Before performing, most researchers or clinicians will
demonstrate the motion to ensure each participant understands the task. Typically the participants
will perform the test at least three times in order to ensure accuracy. The motion is observed or
video recorded to notice the presence of kneevalgus throughout the test, which may then predict for
risk of ACL injury.
The reliability of the DJT can be influenced by the means of ... Show more content on

One study began looking into the presence of knee valgus during the DJT compared to other
movements. The participants included 22 female handball and soccer players who were
instructed to perform five sidestep cuts and three vertical drop jumps. The purpose of this was to
find the difference in the knee valgus angles between six thigh marker clusters, and then to find
the impact of those on the cross talk effect between them. The drop jump test was performed
using a 30 centimeter box and participants performed a maximal jump after landing.
Measurements of knee valgus were taken during the contact phase and initial contact and were
compared using the six different thigh markers. During the drop jump test, there was about a 15
degree of peak valgus between the marker sets. There seemed to be varied cross talk between the
two tests. This was the first study to quantify the differences in knee valgus between these two
tests.13 Therefore, more research is needed to find correlations between the presence of knee
valgus and other possible ACL injury

Arthur Murder Investigation
Murder Investigation Report
I was recently assigned to investigate the death of a man named, Arthur. Upon arrival at the crime
scene, I was told by the wife of Arthur, named Queenie, that Arthur had been extremely drunk and
while coming down from the stairs to get another drink, he slipped and died from a major wound to
his head. Queenie s statement suggested that she had nothing to do with the death as she was at the
local club with a few of her friends and she came back home she witnessed the body of her dead
husband lying on the floor. Queenie also explained that she and her husband had quarreled that
same night, before Queenie left to go to the club. At around 1pm, she had invited her friends to her
house for extra drinks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, what we witnessed was that Arthur was lying face up with one leg on the stairs, which
contradicts Queenie s statement. If Arthur had actually fallen while coming down from the stairs,
he would ve fallen on his face, lying on his stomach. However, Arthur was lying on his back
which is an extremely unnatural position. Autopsy reports confirmed that Arthur, had died on
impact, so the idea of him turning after falling can be dismissed without argument. Also, as seen
at the crime scene, Arthur was coming down the stairs to prepare himself another drink but as he
fell the glass stayed in his hand, still intact in his hand despite, falling from a long distance. The
glass would have most likely shattered on impact and spread across the room. However as the
glass stayed in his hand, it is very unlikely that Arthur, had a glass in his hand during the time of
fall and suggests that Arthur had not fallen or some external force or some other person might have
put the glass in his hand. Next, something we noticed immediately was that, the area surrounding
Arthur was extremely neat. However, with Arthur being approximately 175 pounds, a fall from
across that distance would have generated a lot of force, damaging any property around him. It is
extremely unlikely that, despite Arthur s fall, the property around him would have stayed
extremely clean and

d.Some investors (e.g., pension funds and security dealers) are indifferent between $1 of dividends
and $1 of capital gains. These investors should be prepared to buy any amount of stock with
dividend as long as the fall off in price is fractionally less than the dividend. Elton and Gruber s
result suggests that there must be some impediment to such tax arbitrage (e.g., transactions costs or
IRS restrictions). But, in that case, it is difficult to interpret their result as indicative of marginal tax
rates.
e.The tax advantage to capital gains has been reduced. If investors are now indifferent between
dividends and capital gains, we would expect that the payment of a $1 dividend would result in a

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning by Allan Sillitoe
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is a novel following the rebellious life of twenty two year
old Arthur Seaton. Arthur spends his weekdays working at a bicycle factory and relaxes on
weekends with plenty of drinks while in the company of various lady friends. The novel was
written by Alan Sillitoe who came to be known as one of the angry young men. This group of
writers was a dominant literary force during the 1950s and was immensely popular due to their
accurate portrayal of postwar Britain and the working class. The angry young men produced a
number of books (amongst other things) expressing their contempt with the class system, postwar
welfare state and the lack of class change post war, the disdain of these issues are very prominent...

The frustration of not being able to climb any higher then the class born into is evident within
Sillitoe s novel. The very title of the book gives readers an insight into the life of a factory
worker. Saturday night is a metaphor for the youthful times in life, when one went to work to
earn money to have more then a few drinks on the weekend and were spirited in their rebellious
fight against the government; whereas Sunday morning is the acceptance of their destiny, and a
symbol of conformity. Stilltoe provides reader s a look into this metaphor right from the very
beginning, when Arthur states it was Saturday night, the best and bingiest glad time of the week,
one of the fifty two holidays in the slow turning Big wheel of the year, a violent preamble to a
prostrate Sabbath. The reader is not aware of the double meaning of this sentence until the end
when Arthur appears to be reformed of his cheating rebellious ways and begins planning a
wedding and future with Doreen. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning reveals almost nothing
about the upper classes. Arthur only refers to this class with words such as: them, those chaps and
blokes with suits and bowler hats. The novel implies the working class labours away during the
week and relaxes on the weekend. This shows a clear divide amongst the classes and how there is
no inter class mingling. Saturday Night and Sunday

Essay On The Impact Of Technology On World War 1
The effect of weapon technology had a big impact on World War One. World World I was the most
important turning point of the 20th century. It destroyed most of Europe and destroyed four
empires while also creating many new nations. It triggered the Russian Revolution and set the bases
for Balkan Middle Eastern conflicts that remain unresolved. World War Iwas the war fought mainly
in Europe and the Middle East, between the Central Powers and the Allies. World War I occurred
on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918, with the collapse of the Central Powers.

Able carry greater bomb loads over far longer distances than early aeroplanes, they were soon
employed by the Germans to carry the war to Britain itself. Most aggressive nations used airships
mainly for exploration and observation missions, but today it is the attack of the German
Zeppelins that are best remembered. In the days leading up to World War I, when aeroplane flight
had been possible for only 10 years, there existed a large body of opinion that the future of military
flying lay as much with lighter aircraft.
The career of Peter Strasser parallels the story of the German airship service. Promoted Leader of
Airships in 1913, he led the first strategic bombing campaign in history. The defences eventually
mastered the Zeppelin threat, but as Germany s defeat loomed near in August 1918 Strasser led
another raid. His chosen craft the powerful Zeppelin built.
To prosecute a war on such a scale meant, for the British in particular, continuous and guaranteed
movement of men and many materials which, demanded full control of the sea. Through this it was
possible also to effectively deny the sea to the enemy. Close blockade, as practiced during the early
19th century, had been rendered impracticable by the submarine, the torpedo s and the mine, so this
front line function of the battleship had

If Keurig wants to be able to compete with the other industry leaders, it is essential that they take
the time to do careful research, then implement their strategy for expanding abroad.
Recommendation 2: Follow GMCR s 2012 initiatives with increased innovation
With the expiration of Keurig s patents coming to a near, it is crucial that Keurig be on the
defensive end for a while and prepare themselves for any major market moves. In order to prepare
themselves, Keurig must also have some tricks up their sleeve to keep their market share and
diversification high because of the relatively low barriers to entry.
There were two of GMCR s 2012 initiatives that stood out as good plans for attack. The first one
dealt with launching new coffee makers such as the Rivo Cappuccino and Latte System as well as
new variety blends to accompany them. When their patent expires, launching a completely new
product with new patents will pave the way for increased market share. Keurig will be able to
compete in a much broader market and can appeal to greater amounts of consumers.
In addition to developing new variety packs, it is also essential that Keurig pursue more beverage
options to appeal to a broader market. For instance, GMCR mention introducing a Wellness Brewed
line to include healthy beverages containing vitamins and antioxidant ingredients. Keurig must
continue growth between certain partnerships

Wasted Green on Going Green Essay
The amount of energy it takes to produce a car can actually offset the amount of emissions emitted
throughout a car s lifetime. When thinking about energy efficiency, the ultimate green car , the
Prius, is actually one of the sources of the worse pollution in North America! (Demorro). The
Toyota Prius, known as the most iconic green car, earns itself the most miles per gallon with the
efficiency of using two engines, one of them being an electric. Controversially, the electric engine

maintenance, the Toyota Prius is nonexistent in the green efficiency standards. The fragility of
the Toyota Prius, in comparison, reveals that the technology for hybrid cars are still in the infant

hybrid cars only boast a measly twenty five percent increase in fuel economy with the standard
Honda Civics cutting the closest with an average thirty six miles per gallon. Although manufacture

Internal Struggles In Hamlet
Internal Struggles One unavoidable aspect of our everyday lives is struggling. It is experienced
by people everywhere. No one person will struggle the same way as another person. A majority
of people have their own inner battles they fight in their day to day lives. It is something that
people need to experience and deal with in order to grow as a person. Prime examples of the
different ways people struggle within can be seen in the main characters of Hamlet by William

feelings about the situation under control. Hamlet also struggles with the major news he learns
from his father s ghost; his brother Claudius murdered him. After learning this, Hamlet struggles
with himself and his morals, believing that he must avenge his father s death, but keeps finding
reasons not too. To be, or not to be: that is the question:/Whether tis nobler in the mind to

The Importance Of Movies In Movies
Movies have been around since the late 1800 s in various forms and have always been at the
center of water cooler debates because of their ability to push the boundaries of social norms.
Because movies are entertainment, they can fall victim to becoming boring and mundane after a
while, this is why the boundaries of what we see portrayed on screen are always moving. Lyden
(2003) states We are beginning to realize that we cannot understand or interpret our society
except in its relation to these unavoidable additions to it. Some welcome them and some fear
them, but they are here to stay (p.1). For as long as I can remember, I ve been an avid fan of
movies. I have enjoyed everything from action to drama; comedy to suspense, but the one thing that
is immutable about my experience is the self apparent change in the morals and values depicted in
film. It is the ability of movies to make us feel a certain way, as well as influence social conciseness
that makes the moralities that drive them important to examine. How do movies continue to push
the boundaries of our expectations, without exploring the fringes of cultural and social morality?
What is the damage to our psyches when the things depicted on the big screen challenge the
established moral norms? Matthew 6:22 24 informs us
Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole
body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness.

established relationships with stakeholders at each stage of the process. So How Do You Find The
Freight Quote You Want To Commit To? Your freight quote should be complete, meaning that all
parts of the logical process have been assigned a quote, which ends up as part of the freight quote s
total. If you are shipping freight from America to England, you need to check that all domestic

Does your freight quote including international shipping insurance? While many shipping
companies leave this cost off of their freight quote, it should be included as part of the cost of
moving your goods. Even if your shipment is all packed up and ready to go, there may be some
packing materials that will be necessary as your freight moves towards it destination, and, if so,

For the last few decades there has been a war going on, not a war of bullets or missiles but a war

the 1950s by the United States Government to study the psychological states of a human in
different situations and environments and whether or not a human could be programmed or

My Experience At The Big City Of Jacksonville
When I first moved to the big city of Jacksonville, I was cultured shocked. Being born and raised
in a small town where everyone knew everyone, elderly people made up the majority of the
population, and being a liberal could get a brawl going, the new diversity astounded me. Growing
up in my southern town, I was not forced to have specific ideals, but the culturecertainly affected
them. My town has made me who I am today and I question if being raised so conservative has
held me back and if the culturein my hometownneeds to be more modernized. Not being adjusted to
individuality, the culture of the town, and the towns traditional views, are all experiences that have
impacted me to understanding where I came from has affected my social identity.
From a young age, I have always acknowledged that when I went to a tourist area, there was so
much individuality, that I could not fully grasp. When I would go to Walt Disney World, I
would see for one moment a couple of teens with rainbow colored hair and then I would turn my
head to see an Amish family. I always found it astonishing, because where I came from everyone
was basically the same. Of course, there was always a few that did break away from the norm
that my county had, but they stuck out like a sore thumb. These were the type of people that were
either very rich or gothic in style. I don t recall them being bullied, but they were noticed and
sometimes gossiped about, because they were not the same. As it goes, no one

Whaling Should Be Banned
Aside from radical protests against whaling, other NGOs such as Greenpeace have peacefully
protested the ongoing whaling, by avoiding fleet wars the SSCS partakes in. By 1973,
Greenpeace confronted whaling fleets in response to the decline of blue whales and other species.
In the midst of a peaceful battle to defend the whales, Greenpeacesnapped a photograph of a dead
sperm whale, burdening the public to the IWC in requests for justice. Responding to the incident
in 1979, the IWC established the Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary as a conservation measure, and in
1982 the IWC declared a Global Moratorium. The desire of the IWC to conserve their image of anti

Analysis Of Two Hawaiian Women
NBC News posted an update recently about two women that were lost at sea for up to five
months. (Update: as I am turning this in, I see that the story was updated this morning as well.
This is the third time the story has been updated, I believe). This story has been told earlier, but
those articles were focused on other details like how the women survived, for example. This article
dives right into how the two Hawaiian women never used every source possible to get rescued.

One thing to note, however, is that the direct author or reporter from the AP is not named, it just
says by Associated Press. Three times in this news story does the reporter mention that these
sources are telling their information directly to the Associated Press via telephone. I assume they
want to show that they got the information themselves from these sources rather than taking the
information away from another article; the news is fresh and they re the ones giving it to viewers.
This TV news article seemed a bit persuasive to me. Though it didn t say a set argument on what it
wanted you to believe or side with, it was focused entirely on what the two women said they
seemed questionable. It wasn t that Appel and Fuiava were getting called out, it was the facts they
used that gave me this thought. Multiple things that the two said were put into the article as what
seemed untruthful or hyperbolic. It seems as if the reporter doesn t believe the women to the fullest
extent. Quoted from the article, That was after the women reportedly lost their engines (Associated
Press). Rather than saying after the women lost their engines the word reportedly makes the event
possible, but not one hundred percent believed. There aren t a ton of questions that I thought about
while reading the article that ended up unanswered. My first thought was how the dogs were doing

Whitman s O Captain! My Captain! And Dickinson s Hope is a Thing with Feathers
America experienced profound changes during the mid 1800 s. New technologies and ideas helped
the nation grow, while the Civil War ripped the nation apart. During this tumultuous period, two
great American writers captured their ideas in poetry. Their poems give us insight into the time
period, as well as universal insight about life. Although polar opposites in personality, Emily
Dickinson and Walt Whitman created similar poetry. Dickinson s Hope is a Thing with Feathers
and Whitman s O Captain! My Captain! share many qualities.

Along with the irregularities in meter, neither poem has a regular line length or rhyming pattern.
Dickinson s poem contains alternating tetrameters and trimeters, with the exception of the first
line, which contains 7 syllables. The poem contains some irregular rhyme; heard in line 5
rhymes with bird in line 7, and Sea in line 10 rhymes with Me in line 12. Whitman s poem
contains even more irregular line lengths. The first 4 lines of each stanza vary from 12 to 15
syllables, but the last 4 lines of each stanza vary from 5 to 8 syllables. Unlike in Dickinson s poem,
the rhyming scheme carries throughout the whole poem, although the AABBCDED rhyme pattern
contains a few cases of near rhyme.
Dickinson and Whitman also use similar poetic devices in Hope is a Thing with Feathers and O
Captain! My Captain! Each poem contains an extended metaphor. In Dickinson s poem, a bird
clearly symbolizes hope. The first stanza introduces the bird metaphor: Hope is the thing with
feathers /That perches in the soul. The next lines And sings the tune without the words /And

expands the metaphor by saying And sweetest in the Gale is heard . The bird s song, or hope, is
the sweetest during a Gale, or troubled times. The first lines in the final stanza I ve heard it in the

White Privilege Unpacking The Invisible Knapsack Analysis
This week s readings focused on a topics associated with the white population of America. Some of
these topics included the privileges white individuals are often unknowingly accustomed to
(McIntosh,1) as well as the lack of responsibility and motivation many whites feel when it comes to
eliminating racism. This is a social problem because it constructs biases that often times negatively
affect the interactions between whites and individuals of color. This potentially leads to many
issues including racism, hate crimes, and the unequal treatment races.
In Peggy McIntosh s article, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, McIntosh
embarked to uncover the countless advantages whites tend to have over those of color. By doing so,
she validated her credibility to the reader by listing her findings along with research and evidence to
supplement her claim. After reflecting on the privileges she found, McIntosh stated, ...whiteness
protected me from many kinds of hostility, distress, and violence, which I was being subtly trained
to visit in turn upon people of color (McIntosh, 3). This makes it obvious to the reader that
McIntosh s findings are unjust and should be changed. Unfortunately, most white individuals are
currently doing nothing to modify these unfair privileges. McIntosh concludes the article by posing

Cultural Deprivation: The Hispanic Challenge nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; Why do some groups
not succeed in academic settings? One theory brought up in Understanding inequality suggests that
the gap in the socioeconomic status drives the inequalities in the school system. The low and

time to meet with teachers, hire tutors, and provide continuous transportation. Therefore the lower
class can t possibly compete with the middle and upper classes. Angela Valenzuela gives the

According to Huntington, unlike previous immigrants, Hispanics wish to retain a dual culture.
This presents them with the culture clash of two varying views on culture as well as education.
There are several factors that have made this culture of immigrants assimilations so much
different than the past immigrants that America has so fondly welcomed with open arms. These
include contiguity, scale illegality regional concentration, persistence and historical presence.
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The fact that the US shares such a large boarder with Mexico is
enhanced by the great economic differences on each side. The income gap between the United
States and Mexico is the largest between any two contiguous countries in the world (Huntington).
The incentive to immigrate is obvious, and allows Latinos to remain in contact with their family
and friends while making a living in the US. Because the passage between these boarders is so
accessible, it has lead to immigration on a grand scale. The persistence of Hispanics in migrating
has lead to having Mexicans account for nearly half of all immigration to the US and has changed
Mexican s standing from the minority to the majority in many areas. This regional concentration
has slowed assimilation because dispersal is essential for this to take place. An example of
regional concentration slowing this process down to almost a halt is in Miami in

Review of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Blithedale Romance
Nathaniel Hawthorne used the term romance to refer to his longer fictions the year before
writing The Blithedale Romance, he chose to define the term for the benefit of his readers:
When a writer calls his work a romance, it need hardly be observed that he wishes to claim a
certain latitude, both as to its fashion and material, which he would not have felt himself
entitled to assume, had he professed to be writing a novel. The latter form of composition is
presumed to aim at a very minute fidelity, not merely to the possible, but to the probable and
ordinary course of man s experience. The former while, as a work of art, it must rigidly subject
itself to laws, and while it sins unpardonably so far as it may swerve aside from the truth of the
human heart has fairly a right to present that truth under circumstances, to a great extent, of the
writer s own choosing or creation. If he think fit, also, he may so manage his atmospherical
medium as to bring out or mellow the lights, and deepen and enrich the shadows, of the picture. (
Preface ) For Hawthorne, the novel is meant to be realistic, marked by a fidelity to the probable and
ordinary events of human life. But romance, in Hawthorne s definition, is allowed to stray from
strict realism, but must be accurate about the truth of the human heart . In the case of The
Blithedale Romance, however, Hawthorne was nonetheless working with real and autobiographical
material the community of Blithedale in the novel is

Importance Of Lucille Ball
More than a pretty face:
Before there were women like Oprah Winfrey or Ellen DeGeneres, there was a Lucille Ball. A
woman running her own television show, production network, while also maintaining the role as a
mother and a wife. Lucille was one of the influential women of her time, impacting society
anywhere from interracial dating and marriages, her television show and her pregnancy and what it
represented. Lucille Ball paved the road for a woman following a career in comedy, expanding
acceptance for women s priorities to not always be that of her physical appearance, and the
betterment of her husband and children s lives. In the 1950 s a woman who focused on her own
career advancement and self betterment was often considered selfish and self centered, and
Lucille Ball was one of the women to prove that stereotype wrong. With so little women at the
time in the workplace and drastically fewer women with upper level positions, Lucille Ball
stands out. It is not a secret that Lucille Ball was one of the first significant female actresses of
her time, but the importance of that role is one that is often overlooked. Not only did Lucille Ball
defy traditional domestic roles off screen, but the character Lucy on I Love Lucy, was also
untraditional in terms of the 1950s mindset. While Ball is merely looked at as a hilarious
television star, the importance of her humorous personality is also valuable. In the 1950 s, the
airing period of I Love Lucy, a woman s traditional place in the world was not one of humor and
comedy. A woman s role at that time was cooking and cleaning and caring for her husband and
children, along with maintaining a beautiful physical appearance. An example of such
perfection for the time is the character June Cleaver, from Leave it to Beaver. June was the
epitome of a perfect woman for that time. Perfect hair and outfit, always cooking decadently,
faultlessly cleaned house, all topped off with curlers in her hair and a smile. In the 1950s and
1960s, a perfect woman would be a domestic, dutiful wife and mother who lacked economic
independence, sexuality, voice, or presence of her own, and her identity was crafted by a
patriarchal society. While Lucille Ball s character in I love Lucy lacked

Islamophobi Understanding Anti-Muslim Sentiment In The West
Following the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001 (most commonly: 9/11 ), the

Americans (Khan Ecklund, 2012). After 9/11, anti Islamic hate crimes against Muslims went from
being the second least reported hate crime of religious bias incidents to being the second highest

Appalachia is a 205,000 square mile region that follows the spine of the Appalachian Mountains

Appalachia Mountains are rich in natural resources, containing an abundant number of coal, timber,

agency s efforts have so far been rebuffed by the courts as an overreach: Under the weird legal
regime that governs mining, it s the Army Corps of Engineers, not the EPA, which has the ultimate

the permit after the Corps had issued it. However, in fact EPA s decision is based on evidence from
scientific research on serious environmental harm from mining. In May 2013, a coalition of
Appalachian and environmental groups petitioned the EPA to set a numeric water quality standard
under the Clean Water Actto protect streams from pollution caused by mountaintop removal

pollution without such a standard and more and more streams and communities who rely on those

in respect to Spruce Mine No. 1 was finally affirmed by the Supreme Court in March 2014.

Singing is optional. Reaching for things is not. We all develop hand eye coordination as a part of
our basic survival skills. Nevertheless, we could go our whole lives without singing and be fine.
We want to sing, but we have to make a conscious effort to learn. Some people make this effort as
children, and we assume they were born with it. This is not so. As with anything, it comes more
naturally to some than to others, but we all have to learn. Numerous people believe that tone
deafness does not exist. Many people believe that they are tone deaf (Lancet 2001). Nevertheless, I
do not believe that they are tone deaf, in other words, people who will never be able to learn to
distinguish between notes.
Many of the tone deaf people have been able to work on their problem, and by correcting their
singing techniques, as well as releasing their constrictions, they have learned to sing in tune.
Tone deaf singers often have severe constrictions around their vocal cords (Gandour, 2000).
Usually they have had these tensions for such a long time that they no longer feel like tensions.
A person often finds psychological reasons for these tensions (Gandour, 2000). Gandour states,
frequently a singer has been thoroughly deprived of his or hers self confidence regarding the
voice (2000). One can lose his or her self confidence for many reasons. For example, I was singled
out as the one in the church choir who was spoiling the sound of the choir and by being the

Oedipus The King, Fate And Destiny
Sophocles is the author of the famous play, Oedipus the King . In case you did not know,
Sophocles is from Greece. In Greek mythology there are three goddesses who preside over the
birth and life of humans. Each person s destiny was thought of as a thread spun, measured, and cut
by the three Fates, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. In the story Oedipusthe King fate and destinywas
the main theme. On Google the definition of destiny is the events that will necessarily happen to a
particular person or thing in the future. Fate is defined as, the development of events beyond a
person s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. In this paper I will be analyzing
the story to help you understand the significance of destiny and fate to the story.
Do you think your life is already set out for you or its free will and u can decide what happens?
The power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate is free will. Throughout the story
Oedipus Rex figured that he could determine his own fate. So obviously Oedipus Rex thought he
could control his life with free will. The miserable King Oedipus of Thebes and his woeful story is
a rather significant thought experiment for those of us struggling with this fate or free will problem.
With Sophocles being from Greece he believes in Greek mythology. The Moirai or Fates were
three sister deities, incarnations of destiny and life. Their names were Clotho, the one who spins
the thread of life; Lachesis, she who draws

Difference Between Semiotics, Semiology And Difference
What is Semiotics, Semiology and Difference? In this paper I will define the Semiotics, Semiology
and Difference then I will give the views and beliefs of the three of the masterminds behind these
terms.
Firstly, Semiology and Semiotics are two related disciplines, which study semiotics, the relation of
significance involving signs, object and mind, and classification of signs. Semiotics is a synonym
for Semiology. Semiotics is defined as the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation, while
Semiology is semiotics, the study of signs. According to Swiss Linguist and Semiotician Ferdinand
de Saussure semiotics is the science of signs. Saussure in Course in General Linguistics, said the
roles of signs are part of our social life . For him, sign has two parts, the signifier and the
signified. The signifier is the physical form of the sign. The signified is the concept to which the
signifier refers the meaning or idea it refers to in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For him, Semiotics is a formal doctrine of sign, signs must have a real connection with the thing it
signifies. It is a much boarder clasof Saussure s signifier, as it extends into the physical as well.
According to him, there is a third element that must be present for signification to take happen.
This, additional element is the understanding of the relation between signifier and signified, he
referred to this as the interpretant. The interpretant sheds light on the relationship between signifier
and signified. Pierce admonishes that a sign or signifier must be interpreted in order to exist. The
sign or signifier creates an interpretant and this in turn allows us to access it object or the signified.
In other words, if the sign means something it requires somebody (a mind) signifying and
something (an object) that is

Analysis Of Don t Blame The Eater
Is Greed actually not of a financial use rather than a emotional use. If so would employees who
work at fast food establishments or even major corporate heads of these billion dollar fast food
chains allow their own children to indulge themselves in them, knowingly aware of the vast
risks they could embark on later in life due to their unhealthy choices? David Zinczenko brings
up valid points on how fast food is harmful to one s body in Don t Blame the Eater, . Zinczenko
is able to effectively argue against the manipulation of the food industry by showing the reader
that the consumer is the victim while the food industry is the one to blame. His use of
questioning, personal appeals, imagery, direct tone and colorful diction results in a compelling
case that supports his accusations of manipulation by the fast food industry. Zinczenko asks
questions to support his arguments and guide the reader to what he believes to be actually true.
He starts off the essay using an analogy: is the case of children who sued McDonald s for their
obesity the same as the case of middle aged men suing Porsche for their speeding tickets?
(Paragraph 1). He points out the fallacy of the men suing someone else for something that was their
own fault (such as receiving a speeding ticket), but brings attention to children who shouldn t be
blamed for what society claims is their responsibility. The next question he asks relates to what fast
food restaurants would argue/rebuttal with; shouldn t we

Facebook Tell You Everything Analysis
In previous years, there seemed to be guidelines on what was appropriate to reveal to the general
public. Any decorum we may have had before has been abandoned now. Sharing intimate details
on the internet has become a normal part of daily life. Caring more about ourselves than other
people has become the most important thing to us. Social media has been more of a hindrance
than a helper. With the arrival of social media, the principles that dictate the output of private
information on social media have deteriorated. Libel has always been an issue, and was made
illegal a long time ago, but that does not stop lies from being spread. Reading lies on the internetand

the internet have fueled the fire that is vanity. Everyone is too busy looking out for themselves that
they neglect to treat others well. Genuinely good intentioned posts, pictures, or messages found on

intent of making everyone who sees the post think that the author is heartfelt. Thinking of others

In E. Jones s essay, Canadian identity, ze talks explains logical, ethical, and practical reasons for
and against canada forming a national identity. She gave a lot of information intended to help her
audience come to there own conclusion about forming a national identity.
I felt that this essay was quite persuasive, not in the way an essay usually, making the reader agree
with you, but instead persuaded me to look further into the issue and form my own opinion. I felt
her technique of remaining neutral and providing facts was wise to achieve her goal and was a
welcome change from the typical pushy one sided political writings that are common nowadays.

A Summary Of A Mentor In Tangerine
Everyone has had someone help guide them throughout their life, even after they leave or pass.
This person can affect someone s life in a positive way. This person is known as a Mentor. As we
read the novel Tangerine, we learn that Paul has a Mentor that helps him throughout his journey. It
is clear to see that the role of the Mentor goes to Luis Cruzbecause he is a positive figure towards
Paul, he gives Paul advice, and acts as his conscience. One way that Luis Cruz is the Mentor is
how he acts as a positive figure towards Paul. For instance, he wants to make sure that Paul is
alright. When Paul goes to help fight the freeze at Tomas Cruz Groves, he got very weak and
couldn t go on. Luis sent him inside the quonset hut to lay down and sent Theresa in to get him
settled. A few moments later, Luis came in to make sure Paul was okay. Luis said, Paul are you
alright (Bloor 229)? This quote helps support the role of the Mentor because it shows how much
he cares about people, even if they had just met. The quote also portrays the positivity of Luis s
character. Therefore, one way that he is positive is how much he cares about people and wants to
make sure they are ok. Additionally positive, Luis speaks the truth. For example, after Erik hit Tino
in the head, Luis went to confront Erik. While he was there, Arthur Bauer hit him on the side of his
head under Erik s command. Luis went home and told his family. Paul thought to himself, after Luis
passed, The truth to Luis is

The Longxing Monastery Of China
The Longxing Monastery is situated in modern Hebei province in the north of China. Previously
named the Longcang Temple in old Chinese, the original building sight was first laid in 586 AD.,
and remains one of the most well preserved large scale ancient Buddhist temples in China.
Throughout its long history, The Longxing Monastery has been a location of pilgrimage for a
number of Chinese Emperors who famously left offerings to the Buddha statues. Today, the temple
houses a number of important historical relics such as the Longcang si stele, which dates to the
monastery s foundation and frescos of the bodhisattva Guanyin, and the later constructed Moni Hall
which acts as the centrepiece in the entirety of the Longxing Monastery, with an emphasis on light
and knowledge. The Moni Hall in particular, represents Manichaeism, an independent gnostic
religion that rose to prominence in the period of the Tang Dynasty618 907 AD. Stemming from the
Chinese MГіnГjiГ o (ж‘©е°јж•™) meaning bright religion, Chinese Manichaeism is a form of
Manichaeism practiced exclusively in China.
The Moni Hall has associations with both Buddhism and Chinese Manichaesm which was first
introduced into China in the Tang dynasty, through the nomadic Central Asian communities. As
MГіnГjiГ o, it never rose to prominence, and was officially banned and persecuted through the
suppression of non Chinese religions including Buddhism, under the Huiching Persecution initiated
by the Emperor Wuzong of Tang. Chinese

Founding Brothers The Revolutionary Generation Sparknotes
Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation by Joseph J. Ellis is an episodic recount of six
pivotal moments in post revolutionary America s history. The book follows Abigail Adams, John
Adams, Aaron Burr, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison,
and George Washington through these events. The author seeks to show not only the outcomes that
occurred in them, but to give in detail deeper thought about the thinking and actions that lead to
those outcomes. Joseph J. Ellis is an American author and historian whose main focus is a
chronicle on the lives of the Founding Fathers. Other than the Pulitzer Prize Winner Founding
Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, Ellis has also written eight other books, the newest of
which was written in 2015. In the preface of the book, Ellis addresses his reasoning for writing
about the Founding Fathers, saying, In my opinion, the central events and achievements of the
revolutionary era and the early republic were political. These events and achievements are
historically significant because they shaped the subsequent history of the United States, including
our own time. (13). Ellis believes that knowing the foundation of our past is important for our
society to be able to move forward. Part of his work is to establish how the past has affected our
current nation, and the other part is to separate rumors from facts when it comes to certain
historical events. The six events that are talked about in this book are the duel between Alexander
Hamiltonand Aaron Burr, a dinner held for Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson
, and James
Madison; Benjamin Franklin and his attempt to end slavery being thwarted by James Madison,
George Washington s Farewell Address, John Adams
succeeding Washington, and John Adams and
Thomas Jefferson s correspondences to each other. Each chapter argues that America has been
going through a cycle of attempting to handle the same issues since the beginning of its time.
However, many of them never got solutions, only temporary problem solvers. The topic of slavery
was ignored altogether for fear that its abolishment would break apart the Union. The duel between
Hamilton and Burr was especially important because it was the

Leatherback Marine Turtle Research Paper
Assessing the efficacy of direct conservation interventions: clutch protection of the leatherback
marine turtle in the Dominican Republic Introduction Illegal egg take is a worldwide threat to the
leatherback marine turtle. It affects existing and future sex ratios of the baby turtles, makes
physical changes to existing habitats, and drastically changes the population dynamics the
leatherback population. Numerous studies have been done to determine what specific effects illegal
take has on the population and what effects different conservation measures like artificial
incubation, beach protection, and public outreach has on preserving the leatherback marine turtle.
This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of conservation measures that are geared
toward protecting clutches. Materials and Methods There are five main turtle nesting beaches
grouped into two areas: the western beaches of BahГa de las ГЎguilas and La Cueva and the
eastern beaches of Mosquea, San Luis, and Inglesa. During 2006 2007, surveys were done on
eastern and western beaches to retrieve baseline data on nesting behavior. Based on the results,
different kinds of surveys were done in subsequent years. Regional specific surveys were done
from 2007 2009 on both eastern and western beaches. Artificial Incubation was conducted for the

The paper cannot conclusively say that artificial incubation had lowered recruitment on the western
beaches because they did not run an ideal environment, taking into account the external stimuli of
predation and human involvement. Also, they say that situ protection of clutches on eastern

the paper does do well is say that further research and conservation is need to protect the leather

Theme Of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams, in which the theme is ultimately about the lies,
greed, and desires driving people to act. There is also a topic of the female characters being cats,
who are projected to be greedy women trying to compete to take the wealth of Big Daddy. The
play is about Maggie and her declining marriage to Brick and his tragic past of his homosexual
connection Skipper had to brick. Throughout the play Big Daddy and Maggie try to make Brick
recall his memories of Skipper and their relationship. Mendacity is Brick s explanation to show
why he is a drunk and everyone s lies. Another play The Importance of being Earnest by Oscar
Wilde is categorized as a comedyof manners, as there is a lot satire. The play goes as following,
two people under the name Algernon Moncrieff and John Jack Worthing using the name Ernest to
try and marry girls. The girls, Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew, are attracted to their names
being Ernest only. Algernon and John are eventually caught for their lies, but are forgiven because
they arranged for their names to be legally changed to Ernest.
There is a common themes throughout the play s theme in that there is lies being told and

Professionalism In The Workplace
Introduction Professionalism is a term that has existed for a long time. Its definition varies from
one individual or era to the other. For some, being professional is seen as dressing elegantly at

higher degrees or other certifications. Nonetheless, professionalism comprises all of these
definitions, although it also constitutes much more. It is the level of aptitude or excellence, as well

The Ethical Use Of Animals In Ancient Chinese Art
Animals have been used in artwork all throughout history in order to demonstrate how a culture
progressed, and helped give meaning to certain creatures. These beasts have always been in
artwork since cave paintings, and were praised as gods in a wide range of cultures. At times they
were worshipped as deities themselves or just under the ranking of one. Chinese and Indian
artwork, both use animals in their own respected ways, and show different organisms with their
own power and metaphoric meaning. Animals in both cultures share similar ideals of status and
power, while also teaching citizens at how their civilization worked. Both countries depicted beasts
and mythical creatures in their own style, which was either more natural or abstract, and their
contrasts can be seen in how the people used the carving, and where it was installed.... Show more

In India, animals were used as religious idols and for demonstrating an element of power, or at
times even acting as a gatekeeper. Indian artwork, mostly used larger mammals, such as boars,
lions, and elephants in their sculptures because people recognized the iconography of these
creatures, and used that to their advantage to spread knowledge of Buddhism and Hinduism. China
with its horses, and other abstract mythical creatures were used in royal tombs for when they went
to the next life. They were used more as a status symbol, since horses were only for citizens in the
military and nobility. Through the use of different art styles and the intent of the artwork, Chinese
and Indian art of animals suggests that while these pieces were used for what religion and morals the
people believed in, they were used for different reasons, which gave them different cultural

  • 2. Neuroplasticity and Justice Justice is often thought of in nebulous terms. As such, it is often viewed through a philosophical lens. Indeed, justice has been examined by prominent philosophers such as John Rawls and Friedrich Hayek. Often regarded as a soft science, the idea of justice finds itself the subject of a theoretical framework rather than of scientific study. Despite this theoretical view, much of the theory surrounding justice seeks to determine the causes for a given type of behavior. These theories discuss which penological methods work to correct these behaviors. However, the theory that one can modify his or her brain in order to create new behaviors exists within the scientific biological/psychological realm. By contrast, there are those... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is concurrent with the logical, conscious reasoning of the C system that overrides the X system s prototypes in order to closely analyze a new situation and adapt accordingly. Thus, fairness (justice) is an extension of cognitive behavioral regulation. Akin to the sense of reparation that Jackman (2012) discusses when one applies the concept of restorative justice, the concept of neuroplasticity also seeks a sense of reparation, albeit in a more literal way. Consistent with the idea of learning and the brain s interaction with the environment, neuroplasticity is the idea that the human brain can change and grow, that it can modify itself to compensate for weak spots and expand limits (Cockrell, 2007). For example, it was once thought that neuron production slows down exponentially in adulthood, but research reveals that this is not the case. Research has found that the brains of aging cancer patients were still able to produce new neurons (Cockrell, 2007). The human brain is an extremely complex organ. Inside the average human brain, there are 200 billion neurons. These neurons allow for trillions of connections (Arrowsmith, 2013). Arrowsmith (2013) discussed Mark Rosenshwag, a neuroscientist who conducted an experiment with rats. Rosenswag placed the rats in a stimulating environment and found that rats were better learners because of the stimulation. More importantly, he noted that the brains of the rats being studied changed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After our meetings as well as follow up with the team here the following lays our recommendations for your consideration. Business Entity Based upon your business needs we recommend you form a C Corporation for your new used car dealership. There are many reasons for this decision not the least of which is tax purposes. The C Corporation is a separate entity which means the business will pay its own taxes filing a form 1120 and you will be considered an employee eligible for a salary, bonus, and benefits. In order to maintain this limited liability, the corporation s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The expenses recorded only when the expenses are paid. This can mask how well or poorly a business is doing since it is recognizing transactions only when money is being paid or received and not when sales or purchases are actually made. According to IRS Publication 334 if you will be having an inventory on hand such as the cars for your used car dealership the you must use the accrual method. The IRS says that if your business s sales are in excess of $5 million dollars that accrual accounting must be used. While the initial years of your business may not produce such sales you will have an inventory of cars that will be sold to the public which then means the sales number reduces from over $5 million to over $1 million dollars. However, there are some exceptions such as: Qualifying taxpayer: You are a qualifying tax payer if: o Average gross annual receipts for each prior tax year ending on or after December 17, 1998 is $1 million or less... o Your business is not a tax shelter... (IRS Publication 334, 2017).) Materials and supplies that are not incidental (IRS Publication 334, 2017). But with your corporation these would not be taken into consideration and with your corporation, Mr. Jones, the recommendation is the accrual method of accounting. With the accrual accounting method, the revenue is recorded when it is earned and not when the money is received. The expenses are recorded when they occur not when the payment ... • 4. Analysis Of `` Maus `` By Art Spiegelman Walter Anderson once said, Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have life itself. (Anderson, 2015). The graphic novel, Maus, by Art Spiegelman conveys a message similar to that of Fitzgerald s Babylon Revisited. If a man has hope and perseverance he can realize and truly appreciate a second chance. The protagonist in each novel is a man who has faced great diversity, Charlie in Babylon Revisited does so by his own accord while Vladek, in Maus, hid from the Nazi s in Poland during World War II. Charlie made a lot of money in the American Stock Market, moved to Paris, and lived a lavish lifestyle with his wife. They spent money like it was in endless supply. By the time the Stock Market had crashed he lost his marriage and his daughter when they went to live with his sister in law. Vladek and his wife were in Poland when the Nazi s invaded and desperately went from place to place looking for a safe hiding spot. They found out who their friends were and who were not which lead to some desperate times. In both cases the environment around these men, in Babylon Revisited it was the Stock Market Crash and in Maus it was the Nazi s, put them in desperate situations. • 5. A Brief Note On Malpractice And Medical Malpractice When I feel healthy, I m happy. Abraham Lincoln once said something in a sense that everyone is capable of doing wrong either by accidents or on purpose. Not everybody is perfect, after all we are human. Health care organizations, particularly hospitals, currently face numerous legal issues, several of which will be examined in this paper. The first issue to be examined is medical malpractice. The medical malpractice makes up one of the major legal issues encountered by hospitals and health systems. Showalter (2012) states that with the decline of charitable immunity in the 1970s, healthcare was one of the areas impacted by personal injury law and was held liable for negligent acts. Today, malpractice continues to be a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this research, I will explore the ways of malpractice through physician s doctors. Patients are usually forewarned of risk they go under, so it s a required to trust their doctors or whoever because they expect the utmost care and minimize the risk. If a surgery goes wrong and the patients are injured, it s the responsibility of the surgeon, staff or the hospital to take care of it. (McCullough, Campbell Lane LLP 1998).To really sure it s a malpractice; it undergoes three procedures, breach, injury and damages. Breach is the surgeon work, which must fell below accepted and expected standard, breaching the duty of care owed to the patients. Basically, it s the way the surgeon take care of the patients while under surgery. Injury is the pain the patient suffers after the breaching, which must have not happen if the patients were properly treated. Last is the damage, which is the injury the patient sustained, which has a negative impact on that patient, it can be emotionally, physically and psychologically. Terrible mistakes can happen during surgery. Each year in the U.S. alone, surgical mistakes result in tens of thousands of innocent surgical patients suffering serious injury, paralysis, or even death. These mistakes are committed by surgeons, surgical and hospital staff, and other health care providers. Many causes of surgical errors are sometime inattentive or distracted surgeons ... • 6. Drop Jump Experiment Knee valgus during the drop jump test (DJT) has reliably been used to predict risk of ACL tear1,2,3,4,5. To perform the DJT, participants stand on box that is about 40 centimeters high on average. They are then instructed to jump off the box, landing with both feet on the ground, followed by a maximum vertical jump. Before performing, most researchers or clinicians will demonstrate the motion to ensure each participant understands the task. Typically the participants will perform the test at least three times in order to ensure accuracy. The motion is observed or video recorded to notice the presence of kneevalgus throughout the test, which may then predict for risk of ACL injury. The reliability of the DJT can be influenced by the means of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One study began looking into the presence of knee valgus during the DJT compared to other movements. The participants included 22 female handball and soccer players who were instructed to perform five sidestep cuts and three vertical drop jumps. The purpose of this was to find the difference in the knee valgus angles between six thigh marker clusters, and then to find the impact of those on the cross talk effect between them. The drop jump test was performed using a 30 centimeter box and participants performed a maximal jump after landing. Measurements of knee valgus were taken during the contact phase and initial contact and were compared using the six different thigh markers. During the drop jump test, there was about a 15 degree of peak valgus between the marker sets. There seemed to be varied cross talk between the two tests. This was the first study to quantify the differences in knee valgus between these two tests.13 Therefore, more research is needed to find correlations between the presence of knee valgus and other possible ACL injury ... • 7. Arthur Murder Investigation Murder Investigation Report I was recently assigned to investigate the death of a man named, Arthur. Upon arrival at the crime scene, I was told by the wife of Arthur, named Queenie, that Arthur had been extremely drunk and while coming down from the stairs to get another drink, he slipped and died from a major wound to his head. Queenie s statement suggested that she had nothing to do with the death as she was at the local club with a few of her friends and she came back home she witnessed the body of her dead husband lying on the floor. Queenie also explained that she and her husband had quarreled that same night, before Queenie left to go to the club. At around 1pm, she had invited her friends to her house for extra drinks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, what we witnessed was that Arthur was lying face up with one leg on the stairs, which contradicts Queenie s statement. If Arthur had actually fallen while coming down from the stairs, he would ve fallen on his face, lying on his stomach. However, Arthur was lying on his back which is an extremely unnatural position. Autopsy reports confirmed that Arthur, had died on impact, so the idea of him turning after falling can be dismissed without argument. Also, as seen at the crime scene, Arthur was coming down the stairs to prepare himself another drink but as he fell the glass stayed in his hand, still intact in his hand despite, falling from a long distance. The glass would have most likely shattered on impact and spread across the room. However as the glass stayed in his hand, it is very unlikely that Arthur, had a glass in his hand during the time of fall and suggests that Arthur had not fallen or some external force or some other person might have put the glass in his hand. Next, something we noticed immediately was that, the area surrounding Arthur was extremely neat. However, with Arthur being approximately 175 pounds, a fall from across that distance would have generated a lot of force, damaging any property around him. It is extremely unlikely that, despite Arthur s fall, the property around him would have stayed extremely clean and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Elton and Gruber s result suggests that there must be some impediment to such tax arbitrage (e.g., transactions costs or IRS restrictions). But, in that case, it is difficult to interpret their result as indicative of marginal tax rates. e.The tax advantage to capital gains has been reduced. • 10. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning by Allan Sillitoe Saturday Night and Sunday Morning is a novel following the rebellious life of twenty two year old Arthur Seaton. Arthur spends his weekdays working at a bicycle factory and relaxes on weekends with plenty of drinks while in the company of various lady friends. The novel was written by Alan Sillitoe who came to be known as one of the angry young men. This group of writers was a dominant literary force during the 1950s and was immensely popular due to their accurate portrayal of postwar Britain and the working class. The angry young men produced a number of books (amongst other things) expressing their contempt with the class system, postwar welfare state and the lack of class change post war, the disdain of these issues are very prominent... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The frustration of not being able to climb any higher then the class born into is evident within Sillitoe s novel. The very title of the book gives readers an insight into the life of a factory worker. Saturday night is a metaphor for the youthful times in life, when one went to work to earn money to have more then a few drinks on the weekend and were spirited in their rebellious fight against the government; whereas Sunday morning is the acceptance of their destiny, and a symbol of conformity. Stilltoe provides reader s a look into this metaphor right from the very beginning, when Arthur states it was Saturday night, the best and bingiest glad time of the week, one of the fifty two holidays in the slow turning Big wheel of the year, a violent preamble to a prostrate Sabbath. The reader is not aware of the double meaning of this sentence until the end when Arthur appears to be reformed of his cheating rebellious ways and begins planning a wedding and future with Doreen. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning reveals almost nothing about the upper classes. Arthur only refers to this class with words such as: them, those chaps and blokes with suits and bowler hats. The novel implies the working class labours away during the week and relaxes on the weekend. This shows a clear divide amongst the classes and how there is no inter class mingling. In the days leading up to World War I, when aeroplane flight had been possible for only 10 years, there existed a large body of opinion that the future of military flying lay as much with lighter aircraft. The career of Peter Strasser parallels the story of the German airship service. Promoted Leader of Airships in 1913, he led the first strategic bombing campaign in history. The Importance Of Movies In Movies Movies have been around since the late 1800 s in various forms and have always been at the center of water cooler debates because of their ability to push the boundaries of social norms. Because movies are entertainment, they can fall victim to becoming boring and mundane after a while, this is why the boundaries of what we see portrayed on screen are always moving. Lyden (2003) states We are beginning to realize that we cannot understand or interpret our society except in its relation to these unavoidable additions to it. Some welcome them and some fear them, but they are here to stay (p.1). For as long as I can remember, I ve been an avid fan of movies. I have enjoyed everything from action to drama; comedy to suspense, but the one thing that is immutable about my experience is the self apparent change in the morals and values depicted in film. It is the ability of movies to make us feel a certain way, as well as influence social conciseness that makes the moralities that drive them important to examine. Dickinson and Whitman also use similar poetic devices in Hope is a Thing with Feathers and O Captain! My Captain! Each poem contains an extended metaphor. In Dickinson s poem, a bird clearly symbolizes hope. The first stanza introduces the bird metaphor: Hope is the thing with feathers /That perches in the soul. The next lines And sings the tune without the words /And never stops at all illustrate the interminable nature of the bird and hope. The second stanza expands the metaphor by saying And sweetest in the Gale is heard . The bird s song, or hope, is the sweetest during a Gale, or troubled times. • 28. White Privilege Unpacking The Invisible Knapsack Analysis This week s readings focused on a topics associated with the white population of America. Some of these topics included the privileges white individuals are often unknowingly accustomed to (McIntosh,1) as well as the lack of responsibility and motivation many whites feel when it comes to eliminating racism. This is a social problem because it constructs biases that often times negatively affect the interactions between whites and individuals of color. This potentially leads to many issues including racism, hate crimes, and the unequal treatment races. In Peggy McIntosh s article, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, McIntosh embarked to uncover the countless advantages whites tend to have over those of color. By doing so, she validated her credibility to the reader by listing her findings along with research and evidence to supplement her claim. After reflecting on the privileges she found, McIntosh stated, ...whiteness protected me from many kinds of hostility, distress, and violence, which I was being subtly trained to visit in turn upon people of color (McIntosh, 3). This makes it obvious to the reader that McIntosh s findings are unjust and should be changed. Unfortunately, most white individuals are currently doing nothing to modify these unfair privileges. One theory brought up in Understanding inequality suggests that the gap in the socioeconomic status drives the inequalities in the school system. The low and working class have less time and income to intervene with schooling. This means they have less time to meet with teachers, hire tutors, and provide continuous transportation. Therefore the lower class can t possibly compete with the middle and upper classes. Angela Valenzuela gives the accounts of some Hispanic students experiences in school. According to Huntington, unlike previous immigrants, Hispanics wish to retain a dual culture. This presents them with the culture clash of two varying views on culture as well as education. There are several factors that have made this culture of immigrants assimilations so much different than the past immigrants that America has so fondly welcomed with open arms. These include contiguity, scale illegality regional concentration, persistence and historical presence. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The fact that the US shares such a large boarder with Mexico is enhanced by the great economic differences on each side. The income gap between the United States and Mexico is the largest between any two contiguous countries in the world (Huntington). The incentive to immigrate is obvious, and allows Latinos to remain in contact with their family and friends while making a living in the US. Because the passage between these boarders is so accessible, it has lead to immigration on a grand scale. The persistence of Hispanics in migrating has lead to having Mexicans account for nearly half of all immigration to the US and has changed Mexican s standing from the minority to the majority in many areas. This regional concentration has slowed assimilation because dispersal is essential for this to take place. Review of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Blithedale Romance Nathaniel Hawthorne used the term romance to refer to his longer fictions the year before writing The Blithedale Romance, he chose to define the term for the benefit of his readers: When a writer calls his work a romance, it need hardly be observed that he wishes to claim a certain latitude, both as to its fashion and material, which he would not have felt himself entitled to assume, had he professed to be writing a novel. The latter form of composition is presumed to aim at a very minute fidelity, not merely to the possible, but to the probable and ordinary course of man s experience. The former while, as a work of art, it must rigidly subject itself to laws, and while it sins unpardonably so far as it may swerve aside from the truth of the human heart has fairly a right to present that truth under circumstances, to a great extent, of the writer s own choosing or creation. If he think fit, also, he may so manage his atmospherical medium as to bring out or mellow the lights, and deepen and enrich the shadows, of the picture. ( Preface ) For Hawthorne, the novel is meant to be realistic, marked by a fidelity to the probable and ordinary events of human life. But romance, in Hawthorne s definition, is allowed to stray from strict realism, but must be accurate about the truth of the human heart . • 33. Importance Of Lucille Ball More than a pretty face: Before there were women like Oprah Winfrey or Ellen DeGeneres, there was a Lucille Ball. A woman running her own television show, production network, while also maintaining the role as a mother and a wife. Lucille was one of the influential women of her time, impacting society anywhere from interracial dating and marriages, her television show and her pregnancy and what it represented. Lucille Ball paved the road for a woman following a career in comedy, expanding acceptance for women s priorities to not always be that of her physical appearance, and the betterment of her husband and children s lives. In the 1950 s a woman who focused on her own career advancement and self betterment was often considered selfish and self centered, and Lucille Ball was one of the women to prove that stereotype wrong. With so little women at the time in the workplace and drastically fewer women with upper level positions, Lucille Ball stands out. It is not a secret that Lucille Ball was one of the first significant female actresses of her time, but the importance of that role is one that is often overlooked. Not only did Lucille Ball defy traditional domestic roles off screen, but the character Lucy on I Love Lucy, was also untraditional in terms of the 1950s mindset. While Ball is merely looked at as a hilarious television star, the importance of her humorous personality is also valuable. In the 1950 s, the airing period of I Love Lucy, a woman s traditional place in the world was not one of humor and comedy. A woman s role at that time was cooking and cleaning and caring for her husband and children, along with maintaining a beautiful physical appearance. An example of such perfection for the time is the character June Cleaver, from Leave it to Beaver. June was the epitome of a perfect woman for that time. Perfect hair and outfit, always cooking decadently, faultlessly cleaned house, all topped off with curlers in her hair and a smile. In the 1950s and 1960s, a perfect woman would be a domestic, dutiful wife and mother who lacked economic independence, sexuality, voice, or presence of her own, and her identity was crafted by a patriarchal society. In this paper I will define the Semiotics, Semiology and Difference then I will give the views and beliefs of the three of the masterminds behind these terms. Firstly, Semiology and Semiotics are two related disciplines, which study semiotics, the relation of significance involving signs, object and mind, and classification of signs. Semiotics is a synonym for Semiology. Semiotics is defined as the study of signs and symbols and their interpretation, while Semiology is semiotics, the study of signs. According to Swiss Linguist and Semiotician Ferdinand de Saussure semiotics is the science of signs. Saussure in Course in General Linguistics, said the roles of signs are part of our social life . Ellis is an episodic recount of six pivotal moments in post revolutionary America s history. The book follows Abigail Adams, John Adams, Aaron Burr, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington through these events. The author seeks to show not only the outcomes that occurred in them, but to give in detail deeper thought about the thinking and actions that lead to those outcomes. Joseph J. Ellis is an American author and historian whose main focus is a chronicle on the lives of the Founding Fathers. Other than the Pulitzer Prize Winner Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, Ellis has also written eight other books, the newest of which was written in 2015. In the preface of the book, Ellis addresses his reasoning for writing about the Founding Fathers, saying, In my opinion, the central events and achievements of the revolutionary era and the early republic were political. These events and achievements are historically significant because they shaped the subsequent history of the United States, including our own time. (13). Ellis believes that knowing the foundation of our past is important for our society to be able to move forward. Part of his work is to establish how the past has affected our current nation, and the other part is to separate rumors from facts when it comes to certain historical events.
