Goffman s Contributions On The Theory Of Social Stigma
I have chosen to examine Irving Goffman s contributions to the theory of social stigma, specifically
through the perspectives presented in Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. My
analysis of this work leads me to imagine communication as a mask, possessing the ability to shield
the wearer s actual social identity from observers.
This metaphor has utility because it provides a concrete way to conceptualize a portion of the complex
web of presentation and interpretations that accompany communicative interaction with an individual
who is perceived to have an attribute that positions them as significantly other. When I originally
proposed communication as a mask, I was envisioning the mask as noise designed to act as a barrier to
communication. However, once I became aware of Goffman s work, I realized that this particular
conception of communication provides specific advantages for the stigmatized in a way that
acknowledges the constant vigilance and level of effort that a stigmatized individual must put forth in
order to engage with a normal without revealing their attribute. Thus, I have chosen this perspective
because it disturbed my default understanding of communication as an exchange between two
normals. It may enable those who use it to develop insight into the experiences of those who perceive
communicative interactions differently then themselves.
Goffman s Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life (2007) considers even the most mundane

Essay On Acting 101
At first, when I registered for the acting class, I expected something entirely different than what the
class turned out to be. My initial thoughts were that there would exist costumes to wear and various
lines to memorize, which didn t developed to be the case. While, I m blue the class didn t turn out the
manner I expected I m also pleased. This different class approach to what I envisioned, was the
needed foundation I didn t want but needed. As an actor I have grown and have obtained many
techniques to perform in the future. Previously to registering, I was extremely reserved and distrustful.
Over this semester, I have grown dramatically to become more trusting and less reserved. Acting 101

One time before class, I threw my back out and rotating my neck left and my left arm was
continuously met with severe resistance. Once I stepped into class and began slowly working the three

dealt with severe anxiety and previously been occupied on it and was making great strides before I
started acting 101 this semester. Nevertheless I realized my anxiety helped me be one closer to my
inner weirdo. When I went out with friends to drink formerly to loosen up and dance, I required a
drink. Conversely, I learned I don t have to be extremely reserved and expect a drink to loosen me up.
Intro to acting showed me the opportunity on how to release the inner weirdo at the time of my
choosing. I didn t practice abundantly the techniques outside of class with the exception of the subway

Essay On Staying In Oakland
Staying in Oakland will be the best solution financially. Oakland has a booming economy that
continues to grow at a rapid pace. Many new companies setting up headquarters in Oakland, such as
Uber, are making the prices of living in Oakland rise higher and higher because many rich tech people
are moving in rapidly. As a result, Oakland is becoming a much nicer place than it once was. By
staying put, the Raiders would benefit from more expensive tickets due to Oakland becoming a
wealthy city. Also, the Raiders fan base in the Alameda County is second to none, as they have been
selling out games for years. This will also help drive up the ticket prices because there will be lots of
demand for the tickets, thus raising the prices even further. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By moving there, you will be losing money in the long run. Initially, it will be more profitable than
staying in Oakland because most of the stadium funding will be from the casino tycoons and tickets
for the first season there will be at an all time high. But, after the first season, less and less people will
come to games because the novelty of the Raiders in Vegas will wear off and Las Vegas isn t a football
town. There aren t many true sports fans in Vegas who will come to every game faithfully like
residents of the Alameda County do. A great example of this is when the Rams moved to Los Angeles
last season. Everybody was extremely excited for the Rams coming to LA and as a result, ticket prices
boomed and the Rams were one of the most profitable teams in the NFL. But, as the season
progressed, less and less people went to the games, and the Rams began to self destruct, firing their
coach mid season. So, in the long run the Raiders would be making more money by not moving to
Vegas. Staying in Oakland will be the best thing to do for the fans as

Gregory Orr A Hero s Journey Analysis
A hero s quest is a destined step by step process for many characters in a heroic quest. Campbell s idea
of a hero maintains a sequence pattern of a journey. Campbell briefly explains that an hero s journey
begins with a call to departure, which embarks a new quest. Followed by mentors who aid the hero
into complete his objective or quest. Also there are trials to be endured and the inner dragon to
overcome to transcend to a higher state of being for the hero. After all the obstacles the hero face, he
or she will gain strength to defeat the shadow which portrays as the villain. After the hero defeats the
shadow he or she returns back home or to a new peaceful location. Campbell s heroic journey can be
seen in many movies, stories, and literature, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gregory Orr s heroic quest starts when he is traumatized by guilt from accidentally ending the life of
his little brother. That moment in his life was a traumatizing factor for himself. Gregory Orr whole
journey is based on the effect the accident had on his consciousness and judgement on himself. At this
point he doubts himself as a decent human being and is clouded with guilt from reoccurring thoughts .
I believe Gregory Orr s incident causes a dramatic negative emotion and guilt that makes any possible
comfort seem reasonable for him to gain no matter the cost. Any answer to comfort Orr s quilt would
make Mr.Orr attached and devoted to achieve that comfort which will aid him to severe his guilt and
discard his guilt from himself.. Gregory Orr desires any door that comes across his life to relieve him
of the guilt of his dead brother. Gregory Orr soon comes in contact with a sign that has an image of
martyrs of the civil rights movement and he analyzes their expression, making the conclusion that
these specific martyrs are happy with their actions and sacrifice. One could say that the images he
views demonstrated a state of peace and relief from the cruel reality of racial

The Book Thief By Charles Dickens
How Can We Be Both
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times wrote a famous author by the name of Charles
Dickens about his story. He could not have gotten mankind more spot on. In each and every one of us
there is a bit of both good and bad. We are not painted in black in white, but in an array of colors with
an array of emotions and feelings. Another man that ponders about humanity is Marcus Zusak. In his
book, The Book Thief, the narrator wonders how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and
its words and stories so damning and brilliant . Death, the narrator, has been through the ups and down
of humanity and is perplexed how the same thing could be good and bad, pretty and ugly. Many of the

All that they mostly wanted was food. They would steal from farmers and grocery stores. One day,
though, they decided to steal from a person they thought had too much. They watched this person s
routine and learned that he would carry his groceries home on a bike every Friday afternoon. On one
particularly cold Friday, Rudy poured water on the street that he knew Otto Sturm, the victim would
cross, so that the water could freeze and make Otto slip and fall. In no time at all he was losing control
of the bike, sliding across the ice, and lying facedown on the road. (163) The kids became very
alarmed, thinking that they had killed the man and still felt guilty afterwards. Death gives us a bit of
insight and tell us that Rudy will later on become a giver of bread instead of a stealer. Proof again of
the contradictory human being , Death comments.(164) We are all human and we can all create and
destroy. Take and give. Sometimes humans use too. Liesel, for example, used Frau Hermann as an
emotional punching bag. When Frau Hermann said that she could no longer continue paying for Liesel
s Mother s business, Liesel was devastated. Why wouldn t she be. Frau was their last client and her
family was barely getting by with food. Liesel felt hurt and said some horrible thing, like about time
you do your own stinking laundry and about time you faced the fact that your son is dead. (262)The
things that she said only got worse.

During the past 30 years, deforestation in the Amazon has been a huge problem. The Amazon
Rainforest is home to an estimated one third of all known animal species and makes up about half of
the world s rainforests. The reasons for the deforestation is to expand pastures for cattle production,
and fields to grow soybeans. ( Brazil Geography Introduction. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 May 2016.) While

Extrinsic Analysis Of Mythologies By R. L. Futrell
Introduction
The flash fiction selection I chose for my performance is the story Mythologies written by R. L.
Futrell. I chose this story initially because of the title, having an interest in most cultures mythologies
and stories I started to read the story. However, upon reading the story I was drawn in by the world
surrounding the text. A single paragraph of context is all that is given about why the story is being
told. The rest is dedicated to a boring drive to West Virginia and the trivialities of the expedition and
the sights, smells, and sounds of the world around them. The apparent lack of a central message is
what really drew me towards the story.
Extrinsic Analysis
R. L. Futrell is an author who lives in Xenia, Ohio is known for his works Virginia Adversaria, Zone
3, Harpur Palate, The Cresset Review, Flights!, Poetry Motel, Square Lake, The Tar Wolf Review, and
88: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. He also teaches creative writing Cedarville University. In his
story he mentions the two stories The Five Ages of Man and the Flood and Prometheus, which are
quite telling of the meaning of the story. As with the story the area around the road they are driving on
is flooding, not with water however but with rocks and guilt. The Iron age of man, the worst age,
according to The Five Ages of Man and the Flood was what Zeus decided to destroy and it is the
mobile homes, rusted swing sets and cars that are being destroyed by a group who is not gods but

The Importance Of Executive Agreements In Foreign Policy
In foreign policy, there are two types of executive agreements, treaties and international agreements or
executive agreements. The president is able to create a treaty with another country but needs two
thirds of the U.S. Senates advice and consent for the treaty to pass. Joint possession of the power in
question, by the President and Senate, would afford a greater prospect of security than the separate
possession of it by either of them (Milkis and Nelson, 2016). The Constitution believed that it would
be safer for the United States if both the executive and legislative branches worked together to create
treaties. An example of a treaty is the Jay Treaty. The Jay Treat was between the United States and
Great Britain, but there were some issues with this treaty. Other politicians and citizens did not like
what the treaty stated. They believed the Jay Treat unconstitutionally undermined the separate of
powers (Demmer, 2015). But they could not take any action because senate already gave the two
thirds approval. For treaties, Congress has the power to accept or decline what the president writes.
The Constitution of the United States, has empowered Congress, and not the president (Demmer,
2015). This means Congress has more power in leading foreign policy. Then there is the executive
agreement which brought into force with respect to the United States on a constitutional basis other
than with the advice and consent of Senate ( Treaty vs. Executive Agreement ).

Reflection On Religion
The 105k First Reflection
Religion has been an issue consuming my thoughts. Ever since I attended a Catholic private school for
a year I thought about religion on and off. I wavered and debated on the legitimacy of religion. I also
factored in its various pro s and con s as a social institution. Since then I have come to terms with
myself and my beliefs on religion; viewing religion as a tool for self improvement.
Foremost, I have always been a skeptic. Even at a young age I did not believe my parents when they
tried introducing things like the Easter Bunny or Santa Clause. They seemed too unrealistic for me to
believe without any sort of solid evidence. Religion, on the other hand, was different as I did not think
anything of it until it was put into perspective. It was not until I attended a Catholic elementary school
for one year that I realized I was born into a Catholic family. I did not choose to be a Catholic. It was
indoctrinated into me to go to church once a week for as long as I could remember. As I was only an
elementary student I dismissed the train of thought and did not think much of it. Afterall, I was a mere
child and I knew enough to know that I knew very little.
Needless to say I could not simply dismiss unanswered questions. I eventually kept coming back to
the issue of Why am I Catholic? The generic answers I got from asking the question Why? were That s
why it s called faith. or It s written in the Bible. Dismissing the fact that it does not require evidence
because of faith was simply not enough for me. In addition, a class I took in high school introduced
several ideas: religion is a man made institution, it was introduced to control the masses, and the Bible
has been modified through time and is not an accurate representation of what actually happened
centuries ago. First, the idea that religion is a man made construct to deal with the unknown and
explain the unexplainable casted a shadow of doubt on my religious conviction. In addition the
concept that religion was used as to control the masses, for example Christianity through the Ten
Commandments and fear of divine retribution if you violate them, seemed justified with the fear of a
wrathful God. Finally, the Bible being

Polarized Lenses Are Meant For Daytime Use
Polarized lenses are effective at wiping out surface glare. This is a problem common to many outdoor
activities such as boating, fishing, and driving. Fishermen swear by them because they strip away the
surface glare of water that blocks their view of fish. Motorists benefit from reduced road glare,
reflected glare from cars, and dashboard reflections from the windshield. Polarized lenses also cut
down on light scatter from haze.
Because of its versatility, it seems that perhaps polarized lenses should be included in all Nike
prescription glasses. But this would be a mistake for a number of reasons:
Polarized Lenses Are Meant for Daytime Use
Polarized lenses block out horizontal light waves, which are precisely the type of light that reflects off
horizontal surfaces as glare. This is the reason for the incredible effectiveness of these lenses. Because
they block out horizontal light, less light reaches your eyes, which isn t good for seeing at night when
you need all the light you can get. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This allows drivers to avoid hydroplaning on unexpected puddles.
Polarized Lenses May Interfere with Some Digital Instrument Displays
LCD instruments put out polarized light. If the light waves are horizontal, then polarized lenses will
block the light and render the instrument readouts invisible. Sometimes certain positions of the person
s head will cause LCD readouts to appear blank. Some instrument manufacturers have resolved this
problem while others have not. The problem may occur with some ATMs, GPS devices, and mobile
devices.
Polarized Lenses Can Cause Safety Issues for Pilots
While eye fatigue reduction is always good for pilots, they should use tints rather than polarized
sunglasses for this. One problem for pilots is that polarized glasses can cause difficulty when reading
digital displays in the cockpit (as discussed

Reduced Access To Health Care Essay
The rapidly rising cost of health care in the United States has made access to medical care difficult for
many citizens. Additionally, the number of uninsured is increasing because of job loss and reduction
of employee benefits. This trend is projected to continue. The negative effect of reduced access to
health care may have alarming effects on the economic well being of the nation. The passage of the
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) marks the beginning of significant
transformation in the United States health care systems. After multiple attempts to reform health care
over the years, the nation s leaders have succeeded in pushing through this landmark legislation that

A series of events has recently occurred to cause the passage of PPACA. Economics are explicitly
linked to health care. In the United States, health care coverage is provided primarily through an
employer based system. This system began in the depression era when pay was federally frozen.
Companies, in an attempt to lure scarce workers, used benefits packages including health care as bait.
Described as a uniquely American private social security health care system, the employer sponsored
system is the cornerstone of United States health care system (Blumenthal, 2006). This system has left
many un or under insured. Blumenthal states (2006), The United States dependence on employer
sponsored insurance means that the protection of its citizens against the costs of illness depends
directly on the ability of private businesses to manage and absorb health care expenses that have
defied all efforts to contain them. Recently, economic downturn and the need to reduce expenses to
better compete on the global market has caused many companies to both reduce their insurance
benefits package and their work force causing many to lose their health care coverage. The employer
based system merged with the economic downturn, unaffordable health care costs for businesses, and

How does the concentration of sucrose affect the weight...
How does the concentration of sucrose affect the weight of pieces of potato after osmosis has taken
place?
Aim
The aim of this is experiment is to investigate how much sucrose is in a potato. We are going to
investigate the effect of different concentrations of sucrose on the weights of pieces of potato after
osmosis has taken place.
Prediction
I predict that the less concentrated the solution of sucrose is, the greater the weight of the potato will
be. I predict this because osmosis is the movement of water from a region of high water concentration
to a region of low water concentration through a semi permeable membrane i.e. the cell wall of the
potato. If the concentration of water inside the potato is high then the ... Show more content on

The cell will then begin to shrivel up and become flaccid (floppy). There is always a steady flow from
the weaker solution to the stronger solution, which is why we will leave the experiment for a few days
to make sure that all the water that will pass through has passed thorough. The water particles also act
as though they are trying to dilute the stronger solution and therefore even up the concentrations on
either side of the membrane.
Some membranes in plant cells, such as in a potato, allow certain particles to pass through them and
not others. They are selectively permeable. The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable
membrane is called osmosis. The rate at which osmosis takes place is affected by the concentration of
water in the two solutions on each side of the membrane. If a selectively permeable membrane
separates the two solutions, water moves through it in both directions at the same time. However,
more water leaves a dilute solution (high water concentration) and passes into a more concentrated
solution (low water concentration) than enters it. Although the water appears to move across the
membrane in one direction, it is in fact moving in both directions but more one way than the other.
When the concentration of water is the same on both sides of the membrane, the movement of water
will be the same in both directions.
At this point, the

Stress In The Baboons
This episode features Stanford University s Neurobiologist, Robert Sapolsky, who has a high
understanding of stress and how it affects our not just our health, but our bodies. The main point
Robert is conveying to the audience states that stress leads to serious health consequences, such as
high blood pressure, weakened immune system, fatigue, development of fat and even the shortening of
life expectancy. Robert Sapolsky researches the science behind human stress by exploring non human
primates, the baboons in their natural habitat in Kenya, Africa. After thirty years of research, Sapolsky
believes that baboons are apparently the perfect source of exemplifying human stress because they are
naturally aggressive toward one another, including their offspring, and the pain and stress factors
appear to be the same in humans; especially dealing with stressful jobs and verbally abusive bosses. In
the baboon s case, if you are a full controlled male, you can expect lower stress levels, and if you are
the submissive, abused baboon, the stress level can be much higher. The only way Robert can take a
look at the serious health consequences related to human stress in the baboon is by taking the
unsuspecting submissive monkey s blood and examining the stress hormones in the lab. The results of
a submissive baboon revealed high blood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Similarities Between The Sacho Panza Syndrome And The...
The Sancho Panza syndrome (then) and the American dream (then and now)
In the 15th century, the combination of the Sancho Panza Syndrome and the American dream fueled
exploration at that time and created an incredibly enticing allure of the New World. Exploration and
colonization were performed to attain a higher social status, more wealth, and fame. The result of this
exploration led to the discovery of new lands and laid the foundation for new countries, but it came
with a cost. The perils of the new land discovered were often incredibly treacherous and sometimes
times even life threatening, however, the American dream never faded away. The American dream
today holds very similar to the American dream in the 15th and 16th centuries despite the gap of 500
years. These dreams are very alike, because they both are comprised of individuals trying to achieve
success in lands of opportunity, and although some were prosperous, others were not so fortunate. The
American dream today is a household concept, which states that if a person works hard enough, he or
she can make a better life for themselves. This concept inspires countless people every day to
overcome adversity in attempt to better their life. On a personal level, I can relate to this dream
vicariously through my father. My grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1923 from Bisaccia,
Italy. The Procaccino family stood firmly on the belief that following the American dream was key to
success, but despite how hard my great grandfather worked, the Great Depression drained the money
out of the Procaccino household. John (my grandfather) yearned to become a doctor, but due to his
family s financial situation, John enlisted in the US Army during World War II. After completing his
duties, he earned an engineering degree and became a New York City engineer. John bore two sons
named Angelo and John II. Angelo was a naturally gifted child with tremendous brainpower, but John
was more of a rapscallion. With the guidance of Angelo, John realized that the best way to create
something with your life was to follow the American dream and work harder than anyone else. John II
became an incredible student and eventually went on to be a nationally

Most Painful Memories:

like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals, never/ ending blasted field of
corpses, and throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles. These are the vividly,
grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.

By using abstract words to describe these long suffering patients, Mayes forces dramatic images into
the reader s mind. While reading the book The Discovery of Poetry by Frances Mayes, I learned a lot
about figurative imagery. Figurative imagery is used throughout Edward Mayes poem to make
connections between two ideas we typically would not associate with one another. A concrete example
of figurative imagery in Mayes poem is found in the line that reads, Men looking like they had
been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals. I know that these patients most likely had
not been attacked by wild animals over and over again, but when the speaker plants these images in a
reader s mind, the suffering that these patients have endured become more realistic to the reader.
Sometimes using figurative imagery is much more effective than using a literal image. Mayes wants
readers to know how ill some of the patients are. He goes on by describing the 200 miles of scars of a
patient and how a boy who [had] shot his face off. Mayes figurative images make a stronger point
because they are so blunt. He doesn t seem to beat around the bush; he tells every detail exactly how
the speaker saw it. This poem would not give readers the same powerful emotions without the intense
imagery and literary tropes Mayes utilizes. Toward the end of the poem, the speaker

Gilgamesh, Beowulf As A Literary Hero
It has been a part of humankind since the invention of story to venerate a reflection of what is believed
to be the ideal person; complete with strengths, flaws, aspirations, and codes that mold his or her
goals, decisions, and, ultimately, fate. Such figures, though imperfect, are celebrated because they are
attainable, for perfection is too far beyond the inspirational grip of imagination for many. Each of
these heroes, be they Gilgamesh, Beowulf, or Achilles, are motivated toward different goals and take a
varied and unique path in order to achieve these goals, which are shaped by the social and political
climates in which they are formed. However diverse these character arcs may be, they each share
overlapping characteristics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This such loyalty is shared with the acclaimed literary hero Beowulf, who ultimately offers his life in
a fierce battle with the dragon for his people. The manner in which Gawain then faces the trials set
forth by the Green Knight also demonstrates the strict moral code of sir Gawain; that of the chivalrous
knight. His dedication to his code of chivalry is no more evident than in his encounters with the lady
of Bertilak s castle; while she incessantly makes advances toward Gawain in his bedchamber, he
summons his willpower each time to maintain his code of chivalry and refuse her while remaining
courteous. Blekner asserts the moral struggle that Gawain faces in this scene, stating that We are
always aware that the real threat is not so much the considerable sexual attractiveness of the lady s
flesh as the young hero s fear of not living up to his worldy reputation for cortaysye (Blekner 367).
The seduction scene not only illustrates Gawain s heroism through his manner and courtesy towards
Bertilak s wife, but also the humanity in his flaws that makes him a true hero. While Gawain is
stalwart in his belief in loyalty to his king and chivalry toward women, he is also flawed in that he
doesn t tell the lord of the castle about his prize. In these scenes, Gawain shows a fracture in his
otherwise infallible demeanor; a weakness that he is

The Relationship Between Troilus And Criseyde
The relationship between Troilus and Criseyde in Geoffrey Chaucer s adaptation of their tragic love
story notably hinges on the perception of Troilus s manhod. The interpretation of Troilus as a
feminized male character, and the consequent view that he was not manly enough to keep Criseyde as
his lover, exemplifies the importance Chaucer places on gender roles in the poem. Troilus s passive
nature, as a result of his lovesickness, led to his failure to obey the normative masculine patterns of
behavior. His lack of action is ultimately the reason why his relationship with Criseyde fails. While we
know the tragic ending to their story is inevitable, Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde presents gender as a
central cause for its ending. In the first portrait of Troilus, Chaucer presents us with a manly young
knight at ease with his respectable and authoritative position:
This Troilus, as he was wont to gide
His yonge knyghtes, lad hem up and down
In thilke large temple on every side,
Beholding ay the ladies of the town,
Now here, now there; for no devocioun
Hadde he to non, to reven hym his reste,
But gan to preise and lakken whom hym leste (I. 183 189)
Troilus is represented here as a strong leader. He guides the knights through the temple and gazes at
the ladies of the town as he pleases. He mocks the other knights who foolishly fall in love; Troilus is
above that type of behavior. After the God of Love shoots him with his arrow, Troilus becomes smitten
with Criseyde in one

Surviving The Wilderness
Only the strong and smart survive the wilderness. The wilderness has a lot of difficult challenges and
you have to make sure you can survive them before you go in the wilderness. Animals that survive the
wilderness are strong, smart, and know how to protect themselves. Other animals don t survive when
going into the wilderness because they don t have the natural instincts to do so.
The wilderness is hard to adapt to for some dogs because they are used to the human world and not the

The Legend of Big Tree Warrior
The Legend of Big Tree Warrior
Once there was a great Native Indian tribe named Impauwaka, known for their gift of the most fertile
land of the Earth. They were lead by a strong, brave, yet quiet leader named Big Tree Warrior, whose
ancestors led their civilization to beautiful land countless moons ago. Young children cleaned fresh
vegetables by wide open fields of golden grains. Fathers hunted at dusk on the distant planes, when
the buffalo were lulled into peaceful rest by the glorious sunset. Every piece of the buffalo was used to
please the Earth. Mothers fixed hide into cloaks for each member of the village. Sons took hatches to
the trees, bringing back enough wood for the evening fire. Daughters wove baskets and prepared food

Soon, the cattle groups were vanishing nearly as instantaneously as the trees were chopped. Fields of
grain lost their nutrients from overuse, turning the once rich, dark brown soil to dust. With the loss of
the land and all of its resources, the Impauwaka people fell into a deep famine. Chief Leader, Big Tree
Warrior, finally rose from his tent and ordered the tribe to pack up their little belongings they had left.
The Impauwakans were in shock for only two of the oldest tribal members have ever heard him speak.
Because of this, they knew that what he was planning must have been important. He led them out of
familiar grounds into crowded forests and large fields, forcing their pace into a sprint in the darkness
and a quick tread upon sunrise. Over time, his people grew weaker and weaker as the moons turned
on, but the tribe knew better than to disobey their leader. So, they pressed on with increasingly heavy
legs and cramping stomachs. That is, until young Tall Drum became the first to consult the great
Chief. They passed over a soft plot of green earth when the little boy asked, Big Tree Warrior, let us
live here. The ground is soft and good. We will live strong again. Let us settle here. Big Tree Warrior s
only response was a slight pause followed by a faster tread.
Every morning and every night, Tall Drum repeated these questions to Big Tree Warrior.

Roller Coasters History
Click, click, click your almost to the top of the hill and then whoosh your flying down the track. Not
thinking about anything when really you put all your faith in a little cart connected to a metal track.
There are really three main points when looking at roller coasters the history, making, and thrill of the
coaster. The history of roller coasters is as important as any other step because the architects learn
from others mistakes and what they did right. The beginning of roller coasters started in Russia in the
1400 s when people would make hills with the snow and send there sleds down the hills. They would
build would towers to get to the top of the hill. In the 1700 s they put wheels on the bottom of the
sleds and would be able to go down artificial hills during the summer, they would also use different
colored lanterns so they could ride at night. The first roller coaster opened in 1804 in France. The
roller coasters didn t last long Do to the increase of speed and there not being enough safety, accidents
were very common. The roller coasters caught back on whenever Lamarcus Thompson built the
Gravity Switchback Railway ride at Coney Island. Development was at its highest in the 1920 s there

If we didn t learn from the past then we wouldn t have any of the roller coasters we do now because it
is basically trial and error. We are able to build off what we have done in the past and make bigger and

sturdy structure for roller coasters now and in the future. Thrill you can t have a great roller coaster if
it s just boring it just doesn t work that s why there is people who spend hours a day creating these

The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities Essay
The Evils of Fraternities and Sororities
Joining fraternities and sororities has been a long tradition among many college and university
students within the United States. As the number of students entering colleges and universities grow,
the influence and pressure to join fraternities and sororities grow as well. According to a research
project conducted by Dr. Gary D. Malaney, associate professor of education and director of student
affairs at the University of Massachusetts, 58.6% [of 413 students surveyed] reported having at least a
few friends who belong to the Greek Area (Malaney 2). However, the Kappa Sigma fraternity at the

Among the many fraternities in the United States, some fraternities are said to accept students after
drinking a whole bottle of alcohol nonstop (Brown). Flushing toilets after a current member takes a
dump, not sleeping for two days, carrying bricks in backpacks for weeks, and sexual intercourse are
some of the many shocking things new members will do to earn their way into a fraternity or sorority.
According to Kevin Brown, you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and
that could be anything. Some sororities will paddle each other till their behinds are bleeding. They will
force girls to do things like boob ranking, where they re given five minutes to examine each other s
chests and rank themselves by size (Morehouse) before getting accepted. Clearly, fraternities and
sororities often do not respect the rights, opinions and well being of their potential members.
For many fraternities and sororities, academics are certainly not the key methods of attracting new
members. Surprisingly, fraternities and sororities have quite an effect on student academic
performances. According to Malaney s research, only 4% of all fraternity members surveyed said their
academic performance improved while 26% claimed that their performance got worse (Malaney 3).
Among the sorority members surveyed, 6% said their academic performance

Emotional Intelligence is a situated of capacities concerned with transforming feelings and passionate

foremost: Do sincerely canny pioneers accomplish unrivalled conclusions? (Walter et al., 2012). In a
few settings, it is somewhat natural that managing successfully with one s own and others feelings is a
key to achievement. All the more as of late, these abilities or capacities have again refinished as a
major center of consideration inside undertaking administration, determined by the more extensive

The Specific Learning Disability
Under IDEA (2004), Disproportionality continues to exist in several categories listed, especially the
categories of the Specific Learning Disability (SLD), Emotional Disturbance (ED), and Intellectual
Disability (ID) ,(Gamm, 2007). Disproportionality is defined as the overrepresentation and under
representation of a particular population or demographic group in special or gifted education programs
relative to the presence of this group in the overall student population (National Association for
Bilingual Education, 2002). So many factors are responsible for this disproportionality, but the key
factors, as apparent from researchers are; (1) gender difference, (2) overrepresentation of Culturally
and Linguistically Diverse CLD population, (3) unsuccessful teaching approaches, (4) poor classroom
management skills, and (5) assessment policies and practices. The gender difference is one of the key
factors responsible for disproportionate in many categories listed under IDEA. Researches show that
greater numbers of male students are recognized with special needs than female students. Across all
ethnic and racial groups, twice as many males as females are recognized as needing special education
services in primary schools, specifically in certain categories (Holt, McGrath, Herring, 2007). These
categories are SLD, ED, and ID. According to these facts from the U.S. Department of Education

The Invention Of The Scientific Revolution
Women in the Scientific Revolution
The scientific revolution is generally considered part of the broader intellectual revolution that began
with the Italian Renaissance and the rediscovery and translation of the classical writers, particularly
Aristotle, sometime during the fourteenth century. It is only in retrospect that one can understand
broad movements, such as this, but one can assert with confidence that the scientific revolution
resulted from a confluence of several factors, most particularly the rejection of the Ptolemaic model of
planetary movement combined with an increased interest in Aristotelian science (Grant, 1996). Thus,
the scientific revolution, insofar as it was a revolution rather than a developing, continuous process,
may be claimed to have begun in 1543 with the publication of Copernicus De revolutionibus orbium
coelestium, though establishing this as a boundary is as much a matter of convenience as anything else
(Linton, 2004). As an intellectual and cultural phenomenon, the scientific revolution continues to the
present, moving through such advances as Newtonian mechanics, the experimental method of
chemistry, advanced in anatomy and medicine, Darwinian evolution, relativity and quantum
mechanics, with myriad offshoots at every stage along the way of this development.
At the present, there is much dispute about how, or whether, the scientific revolution will end: some
think it will continue forever, while others believe it will culminate with

Antibiotics Lab Report
The purpose of this experiment was to test the effectiveness of different antibiotics. The antimicrobial
activity of selected antibiotics and hand sanitizer on different bacteria was evaluated. The method used
to determine antibiotic sensitivity was the sensitivity disk method. Antibiotics were put onto paper
disks and then placed on agar plates that had been spread with bacterial culture. The plate was
incubated for a week, and then the zone of inhibition (area of no bacterial growth) around the disk was
measured. This measure of the inhibition zone indicated the susceptibility or resistance of the
bacterium to the antibiotic. And by comparing the experimentally determined zone diameters with
known diameters, susceptibility patterns known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each group determined the zone size of the bacterial strains in the different antibiotics. Additionally,
by comparing their measured data to the zone diameter interpretive chart in the lab procedure, the
groups determined whether their bacterial strains were resistant, intermediate, or susceptible to the
antimicrobial agents used. In the end, all groups shared their data with each other. This table shows the
collective data for the lab section. One bacterial strain, Escherichia coli, MZ8 was not picked by any
group so there was no data for it.
Discussion: If a bacterial strain is susceptible to an antibiotic, it can be inhibited by a concentration of
this drug. The antibiotic will be associated with a high chance of therapeutic success. If a bacterial
strain is said to be intermediate when it is inhibited by a concentration of this drug, then it is
associated with an uncertain therapeutic effect. And if a bacterial strain is said to be resistant to an
antibiotic, then this drug is associated with a high chance of therapeutic failure.

Langston Hughes and Jesse B. Simple
Lansgton Hughes and Jesse B. Semple
In the early 1940s an African American writer by the name of Langston Hughes, who flourished
during the Harlem Renaissance in New York, had established a character in his short story writings
named Jesse B. Semple. Through these short stories he used this character to represent the black man
of his times. However the question remains, is Jesse B. Semple an accurate representation of the black
man of 1940s? This question can best be answered by looking at the conditions of society during that
time period, what the mind set of the black man in that era and comparing it to the representation that
Hughes created with Jesse B. Semple. Langston Hughes was born on February 1st, 1902 in Joplin,
Missouri. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His characteristics were that he had little formal education, but he had a lot of common sense and
could see the truth in many situations. In many ways Langston Hughes used Semple and his stories to
project the voice of all the black men of that time. Semple touched on issues such as racism,
interracial marriages and any other important issues that showed what it meant to be black during that
period. Hughes took every issue that he felt was necessary in the accurate representation of the Negro
man, and projected through the life of Semple. Hughes also took the name Semple and often called
him, Simple to emphasize how simple his life seemed at a glance, but in fact it was not simple at all.
The events Jesse B. Semple went through in his stories and his opinions and views of what was going
on in the world showed a certain irony that the society of that time had for them. With the stories of
Jesse B. Semple and his, simple life, he felt he had captured the mindset of every black man of the
1940s, because he felt most black men in 1940s were bound to the same characteristics which Semple
had.
Now fully understanding the life and inspirations of Langston Hughes, the society and mind set of the
black man in the 1940s, and the representation that Jesse B. Semple held for the black men of that
time, we can answer the question: Is Jesse B. Semple an accurate representation of the black man of
the 1940s? When

Conservation Of Mass Lab
The law of conservation of mass states that matter can be changed from one form into another,
mixtures can be separated or made, and or substances can be decomposed, but the total amount of
mass remains constant. Taking this law from a different view we can state that the total mass of the
universe remains constant. Whenever matter undergoes change the total mass of the products will be
the same as the total mass of the reactants. For example, in this experiment sodium hydroxide and
copper sulfate, the reactants have a total mass of 21.4 grams. The total mass of the products, copper
hydroxide and sodium sulfate, was 21.13 grams. The 0.27 grams was a result of the solution staying
on the thermometer that was used to measure the temperature. This law was formulated in the end of

The most noticeable of them was oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. It was also known then that when a
metal was heated in the air it became and oxide, this change was accompanied by an increase in mass.
An example of an oxide is magnesium oxide. This happens when magnesium, a metal, reacts with the
oxygen when it burns. An example calculation is when the mass of the reactant, magnesium, is 2.39
grams and the product, magnesium oxide (MgO) is 3.78 grams. (LearnChemistry) We can see a
noticeable change in the mass. It must therefore mean that oxygen from the air must have been
absorbed. The total amount of oxygen absorbed is 1.39 grams. This reaction can be reversed by
heating the magnesium which releases the oxygen and returning the metal, magnesium, into a pure
metal.

How Did Marat Contribute To The French Revolution
Jean Paul Marat was an important figure in the French revolution because of his tactful writing style,
his callings for more violence, and the legacy he left in the French revolution.
To start, Jean Paul Marat was an important figure in the French Revolution because of his tactful
writing style. The title of his Newspaper that was published during the duration of the French
revolution was Ami du peuple, which translates to Friend of the People. Titling his paper in this
manner offered Marat many benefits. In chosing the world friend, Marat makes a connection with the

The Spanish Empire, in an effort to increase its size and spread Catholicism, carried out many
conquests overseas. In Bautista s work Still Life with Grapes, Flowers, and Shells, 1628 reflects the
new delights that the new world had to offer . The arrangement of shells and exotic birds and flowers,
is a combination of old and new: with a traditional style of painting depicting exciting and unexplored
goods. This could possibly be a metaphor for the rather old and powerful Spanish empire, exploring
into the unknown. The subtle uses of bright bold colours of peach and chartreuse, as well as warm
earth tones are a clear reflection of the South American tropics, along with their exotic flora and fauna,
and humid climate. It also creates moods of excitement in anticipation of what else there is to explore.
The lusciousness of the brush strokes and use of highlights give the painting a new life, in the both
things harsh like the foliage of the plants and soft like plumage of the birds. The sombre background
and traditional table ground the contrasting arrangement and forms the basic structure of the piece. It
also competes with the display, just like Spain and its conquest against other nations.

Dreyfus is importance lies in the strong antisemitism movement in France that erupted after (Fischel

Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or military change, his
attempts to advocate for his innocence led to a political and cultural divide in France. The Dreyfus
Affair was a main cause of the tremendous unrest in France. It unleased a strong anti Semitism
movement in France because of a perceived failure of the justice system (Fischel 119). It deeply

Abstract
This report will look at the morphology of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation and the percent
lipid in our adipocytes after differentiation. The analysis of cell morphology is important to study cell
behaviour such as the uptake of nutrients [1]. Three different plates of 3T3 L1 cells were examined. 2
of the plates were grown then differentiated into adipocytes. After differentiation, these cells were

did not undergo differentiation before fixing with formalin. After imaging these cells using a
fluorescence microscope, the images were analyzed with the Image J software. Image J analyzed the
shape index of the cell our results showed the adipocytes to have a shape index of 0.888±0.030 in
comparison to than the undifferentiated fibroblasts, which had a shape index of 0.335±0.082. The

These 3T3 L1 cells are capable of differentiating from fibroblasts into adipocytes under certain
conditions. 3T3 L1 cells are classified as Biosafety Level 1 [2]. 3T3 L1 cells divide rapidly until they
reach 100 percent confluency, which primes them to differentiate into adipocytes. The purpose of this
study was to examine 3T3 L1 cells before and after differentiation to compare their morphology and
lipid content.

Before staining the differentiated cells, they were fixed using formalin (cross linking) to preserve the
cell structure. By staining the cells with Oil Red O, we were able to stain the lipid within the cell,
which increases the contrast of a cell and makes it easier to visualize the lipid content within each cell

Postpartum Depression And The Depression
The postpartum time period is depicted as a joyful time for mothers, but in some cases it can be a time
of calamity (Jevitt, Groer, Crist, Gonzalez, Wagner, 2012). Postpartum Depression (PPD) in women
after childbirth is a common occurrence. It happens in all races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic
statuses. PPD is a severe depression that affects mothers after childbirth. It involves serious
depression, sadness, and loneliness. Cheryl Tatano Beck is a nursing theorist who is known for her
work and research with postpartum depression and the development of the Postpartum Depression
Screening Scale (PDSS) and the development of the Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory
(PDPI) (Alligood, 2014). She began her focus on obstetrical nursing after she graduated from Western
Connecticut State University in 1970 (Alligood, 2014). Beck s focus was first on studying women in
labor and fetal monitoring (Alligood, 2014). She then moved to studying and researching PPD. Beck
noticed that there was not much research done on the disorder (Alligood, 2014). Beck wrote her
theory called teetering on the edge, as part of her doctorate thesis is 1993 (Alligood, 2014). This thesis
focused on the importance of different risk factors and concepts regarding postpartum depression and
is the foundation of her theory.
Foundations of the Theory
Beck s theory on Postpartum Depression is strongly based upon many other theorists work. She
emphasizes the importance of Jean Watson s caring

Humic Functional Groups
Humic substances are commonly described as heterogeneous compounds contain many functional
groups and they can be viewed as polyfunctional ligands. Oxygen containing functional groups are the
most abundant and are ultimately the most important for binding metal ions (Logan et al., 1997). The
presences of functional group in organic compounds that have unshared pairs of electrons, and that
can form coordinate linkages with metal ions (Fig.3) are in the order of decreasing affinity of organic
groupings for metal ions as follows:
O NH2 N=N COO O C=O
Enolate Amine Azo ring N Carboxylate Ether Carbonyl
The order stability of some divalent cations complexes with humic substances are as follows: Cu2+
Ni2+ ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The capability of metal complexes to supply plant available micronutrients under different soil types
are related to stability and solubility of metal HS complexes. So that, the increases in plant growth
under expermintal conditions caused by an improvement plant nutrients uptake (Garcia Mina, 2004).
2.3.2. Interaction of metal ions with humic acids
The formation of covalent link between metal ions and the humic acid, formation of H bonding, as
well as, electrostatic interface can promote the interaction between HA and metal ions. In the micellar
aggregates, the hydrophilic part of the molecule including carboxyl groups and phenolic hydroxyl
groups apprehends the aromatic structure. Complexation with the hydrophilic part of HA acid have
been formed as a consequence of the interaction with metal ions, also increasing the ratio of aromatic
structure (Dudare and Klavins, 2012). HS complexing capacity varies as a function of pH. Two
binding patterns are possibly present: at acid neutral pH (carboxylates) and at alkaline pH (carboxylate
and phenolic groups). The binding patterns, binding strength, stability and solubility depend on the
complexed metal. Complex solubility depends on the concentration of free ionized functional groups
and the molecular weight (Garcia Mina, 2006).
Erdogan et al. (2007) manifested that the differences in sorption ability of particular metal

Georgia in the Civil Rights Movement
Georgia in the Civil Rights Movement
Contemporary History Research Paper
The civil rights movement was a time of great upheaval and change for the entire United States, but it
was especially so in the South. The civil rights movement in the American South was one of the most
triumphant and noteworthy social movements in the modern world. The civil rights movement was an
enduring effort by Black Americans to obtain basic human and civil rights in the United States. Black
Georgians formed part of this Southern movement for civil rights and the wider national struggle for
racial equality. From Atlanta to Albany to the most rural counties in Georgia, black activists, and their
white allies, protested white supremacy in a myriad of ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The movement gained a great deal of support among black people in Georgia because Henry McNeal
Turner, an African Methodist Episcopal bishop and political leader, became an avid supporter (Tuck,
2003). Also, during this time, black Georgians began establishing churches and schools within their
own separate communities as a safeguard from the discrimination and racism they faced on a regular
basis.
World War II and its aftermath effected great changes in Georgia s civil rights struggle. Large numbers
of blacks moved to the west and the north to share in the wartime prosperity, giving the minority
problem a national rather than a regional character. In Georgia, and elsewhere, urbanization was also
rapidly accelerated and large numbers of blacks who fought in the armed services against tyranny and
injustice abroad began to more keenly feel the injustice at home. The fight for democracy in Europe
offered the perfect opportunity for black leaders to press for racial change in the South.
In 1944, Primus King, a black man registered to vote in Georgia, attempted to cast a ballot in the
Democratic primary. He was turned away by a police officer who escorted him off the premises of the
Muscogee County Courthouse. This was a time in Georgia where the Democratic Party controlled all
of the politics in Georgia and in the South. Primus King s challenge to the white primary was planned
by a group of black civil rights

North Korea s Moranbong Band, My Heart
Performed by North Korea s Moranbong Band, My Heart is a song of contrast. Contrast between
complex and straightforward, and bright and dark, both in the instrumentation and lyrical content. It is
inside of these contrasts that the listener can begin to understand the song s political message.
Beginning with sudden, energetic burst of violins, piano, electric guitar, electric bass, and a drum kit,
the song s intro is heavily syncopated and rhythmically varied. After a short call and response section
between the piano and rest of the band, every instrument in unison performs a rising, 8th note riff that
connects to the verse. It is here when the vocals come in where the intro s powerful energy slides into
a less driving, more mellow mood. The intro grabs the listener s attention, but once the lyrics come in
the music slides back to allow the singer to be dominant.
Rhythmical, the core of My Heart lies in the 4/4 time signature with emphasis on the backbeat. While
the bass sticks to hitting quarter notes with the drums, guitar and piano provide syncopation in the
verses by playing on the offbeats. Together with a tempo that comfortably ... Show more content on

While the lyrics do not shy away from displaying the political message outright, the music also carries
this message. By utilizing contrasting elements, such as the march like beat with sudden, syncopated
moments, and the bright instrumentation with dark harmonics, My Heart could be interpreted as a
battle between opposing forces, and calling on the North Korean citizens to stand up and back their
country in order to win any upcoming conflicts. The song feels like a march, further elevating its
political, militaristic message. The lyrics talk about giving everything to the country, and the dark
chords and rich backing vocals give these lyrics a dramatic weight that could help persuade listeners
to follow the narrator s example of

, Wonder Woman And Wonder Woman
Greek Mythology Heroes
In this paper I will analyze two characters in two separate works, one from a literary text and one from
a film. The focus of this paper will be on heroes that have a relationship to an element of mythology. I
will use the character Odysseus from Homer s epic poem, The Odyssey and the character Wonder
Woman from the American superhero film Wonder Woman . In this essay I will analyze the gender,
appearance, actions, and roles that these heroes have. Throughout this essay, I will also discuss the
negative characteristics that both these heroes have, such as their violent actions towards others.
Heroes possess numerous qualities that make them great, however, there are certain qualities of a hero
that are consistent throughout Greek mythology; bravery, intelligence, and strength. These qualities
are significant to these two Greek Mythologies because these heroes are known to bravely risk their
lives for others, using their wisdom to guide them, all while fighting strongly for what they believe in.
This paper will serve to prove that regardless of the gender of each of these personas, the
characteristics that define a hero remain consistent.
To begin, I would like to provide the reader with some background information that pertains to these
heroes. Wonder Woman is a superhero who is also known as Princess Diana, and she grew up on the
Amazon Island of Themyseria. Wonder Woman has been granted superhero powers by Zeus, to fight
against Ares if he

  • 2. Goffman s Contributions On The Theory Of Social Stigma I have chosen to examine Irving Goffman s contributions to the theory of social stigma, specifically through the perspectives presented in Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. My analysis of this work leads me to imagine communication as a mask, possessing the ability to shield the wearer s actual social identity from observers. This metaphor has utility because it provides a concrete way to conceptualize a portion of the complex web of presentation and interpretations that accompany communicative interaction with an individual who is perceived to have an attribute that positions them as significantly other. When I originally proposed communication as a mask, I was envisioning the mask as noise designed to act as a barrier to communication. However, once I became aware of Goffman s work, I realized that this particular conception of communication provides specific advantages for the stigmatized in a way that acknowledges the constant vigilance and level of effort that a stigmatized individual must put forth in order to engage with a normal without revealing their attribute. Thus, I have chosen this perspective because it disturbed my default understanding of communication as an exchange between two normals. It may enable those who use it to develop insight into the experiences of those who perceive communicative interactions differently then themselves. Goffman s Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life (2007) considers even the most mundane ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many new companies setting up headquarters in Oakland, such as Uber, are making the prices of living in Oakland rise higher and higher because many rich tech people are moving in rapidly. As a result, Oakland is becoming a much nicer place than it once was. By staying put, the Raiders would benefit from more expensive tickets due to Oakland becoming a wealthy city. Also, the Raiders fan base in the Alameda County is second to none, as they have been selling out games for years. This will also help drive up the ticket prices because there will be lots of demand for the tickets, thus raising the prices even further. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By moving there, you will be losing money in the long run. Initially, it will be more profitable than staying in Oakland because most of the stadium funding will be from the casino tycoons and tickets for the first season there will be at an all time high. But, after the first season, less and less people will come to games because the novelty of the Raiders in Vegas will wear off and Las Vegas isn t a football town. There aren t many true sports fans in Vegas who will come to every game faithfully like residents of the Alameda County do. A great example of this is when the Rams moved to Los Angeles last season. Everybody was extremely excited for the Rams coming to LA and as a result, ticket prices boomed and the Rams were one of the most profitable teams in the NFL. But, as the season progressed, less and less people went to the games, and the Rams began to self destruct, firing their coach mid season. So, in the long run the Raiders would be making more money by not moving to Vegas. Staying in Oakland will be the best thing to do for the fans as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Campbell s idea of a hero maintains a sequence pattern of a journey. Campbell briefly explains that an hero s journey begins with a call to departure, which embarks a new quest. Followed by mentors who aid the hero into complete his objective or quest. Also there are trials to be endured and the inner dragon to overcome to transcend to a higher state of being for the hero. After all the obstacles the hero face, he or she will gain strength to defeat the shadow which portrays as the villain. After the hero defeats the shadow he or she returns back home or to a new peaceful location. Campbell s heroic journey can be seen in many movies, stories, and literature, ... He could not have gotten mankind more spot on. In each and every one of us there is a bit of both good and bad. We are not painted in black in white, but in an array of colors with an array of emotions and feelings. Another man that ponders about humanity is Marcus Zusak. In his book, The Book Thief, the narrator wonders how the same thing could be so ugly and so glorious, and its words and stories so damning and brilliant . • 8. Extrinsic Analysis Of Mythologies By R. L. Futrell Introduction The flash fiction selection I chose for my performance is the story Mythologies written by R. L. Futrell. I chose this story initially because of the title, having an interest in most cultures mythologies and stories I started to read the story. However, upon reading the story I was drawn in by the world surrounding the text. A single paragraph of context is all that is given about why the story is being told. The rest is dedicated to a boring drive to West Virginia and the trivialities of the expedition and the sights, smells, and sounds of the world around them. The apparent lack of a central message is what really drew me towards the story. Extrinsic Analysis R. L. Futrell is an author who lives in Xenia, Ohio is known for his works Virginia Adversaria, Zone 3, Harpur Palate, The Cresset Review, Flights!, Poetry Motel, Square Lake, The Tar Wolf Review, and 88: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. He also teaches creative writing Cedarville University. In his story he mentions the two stories The Five Ages of Man and the Flood and Prometheus, which are quite telling of the meaning of the story. As with the story the area around the road they are driving on is flooding, not with water however but with rocks and guilt. The Iron age of man, the worst age, according to The Five Ages of Man and the Flood was what Zeus decided to destroy and it is the mobile homes, rusted swing sets and cars that are being destroyed by a group who is not gods but higher on ... • 9. The Importance Of Executive Agreements In Foreign Policy In foreign policy, there are two types of executive agreements, treaties and international agreements or executive agreements. The president is able to create a treaty with another country but needs two thirds of the U.S. Senates advice and consent for the treaty to pass. Joint possession of the power in question, by the President and Senate, would afford a greater prospect of security than the separate possession of it by either of them (Milkis and Nelson, 2016). The Constitution believed that it would be safer for the United States if both the executive and legislative branches worked together to create treaties. An example of a treaty is the Jay Treaty. The Jay Treat was between the United States and Great Britain, but there were some issues with this treaty. Other politicians and citizens did not like what the treaty stated. They believed the Jay Treat unconstitutionally undermined the separate of powers (Demmer, 2015). But they could not take any action because senate already gave the two thirds approval. For treaties, Congress has the power to accept or decline what the president writes. The Constitution of the United States, has empowered Congress, and not the president (Demmer, 2015). This means Congress has more power in leading foreign policy. Then there is the executive agreement which brought into force with respect to the United States on a constitutional basis other than with the advice and consent of Senate ( Treaty vs. Executive Agreement ). ... • 10. Reflection On Religion The 105k First Reflection Religion has been an issue consuming my thoughts. Ever since I attended a Catholic private school for a year I thought about religion on and off. I wavered and debated on the legitimacy of religion. I also factored in its various pro s and con s as a social institution. Since then I have come to terms with myself and my beliefs on religion; viewing religion as a tool for self improvement. Foremost, I have always been a skeptic. Even at a young age I did not believe my parents when they tried introducing things like the Easter Bunny or Santa Clause. They seemed too unrealistic for me to believe without any sort of solid evidence. Religion, on the other hand, was different as I did not think anything of it until it was put into perspective. It was not until I attended a Catholic elementary school for one year that I realized I was born into a Catholic family. I did not choose to be a Catholic. It was indoctrinated into me to go to church once a week for as long as I could remember. As I was only an elementary student I dismissed the train of thought and did not think much of it. Afterall, I was a mere child and I knew enough to know that I knew very little. Needless to say I could not simply dismiss unanswered questions. I eventually kept coming back to the issue of Why am I Catholic? The generic answers I got from asking the question Why? were That s why it s called faith. or It s written in the Bible. Dismissing the fact that it does not require evidence because of faith was simply not enough for me. In addition, a class I took in high school introduced several ideas: religion is a man made institution, it was introduced to control the masses, and the Bible has been modified through time and is not an accurate representation of what actually happened centuries ago. First, the idea that religion is a man made construct to deal with the unknown and explain the unexplainable casted a shadow of doubt on my religious conviction. In addition the concept that religion was used as to control the masses, for example Christianity through the Ten Commandments and fear of divine retribution if you violate them, seemed justified with the fear of a wrathful God. Finally, the Bible being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Polarized Lenses Are Meant For Daytime Use Polarized lenses are effective at wiping out surface glare. This is a problem common to many outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and driving. Fishermen swear by them because they strip away the surface glare of water that blocks their view of fish. Motorists benefit from reduced road glare, reflected glare from cars, and dashboard reflections from the windshield. Polarized lenses also cut down on light scatter from haze. Because of its versatility, it seems that perhaps polarized lenses should be included in all Nike prescription glasses. But this would be a mistake for a number of reasons: Polarized Lenses Are Meant for Daytime Use Polarized lenses block out horizontal light waves, which are precisely the type of light that reflects off horizontal surfaces as glare. This is the reason for the incredible effectiveness of these lenses. Because they block out horizontal light, less light reaches your eyes, which isn t good for seeing at night when you need all the light you can get. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, the number of uninsured is increasing because of job loss and reduction of employee benefits. This trend is projected to continue. The negative effect of reduced access to health care may have alarming effects on the economic well being of the nation. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A series of events has recently occurred to cause the passage of PPACA. Economics are explicitly linked to health care. In the United States, health care coverage is provided primarily through an employer based system. This system began in the depression era when pay was federally frozen. Companies, in an attempt to lure scarce workers, used benefits packages including health care as bait. Described as a uniquely American private social security health care system, the employer sponsored system is the cornerstone of United States health care system (Blumenthal, 2006). This system has left many un or under insured. Blumenthal states (2006), The United States dependence on employer sponsored insurance means that the protection of its citizens against the costs of illness depends directly on the ability of private businesses to manage and absorb health care expenses that have defied all efforts to contain them. Recently, economic downturn and the need to reduce expenses to better compete on the global market has caused many companies to both reduce their insurance benefits package and their work force causing many to lose their health care coverage. • 14. How does the concentration of sucrose affect the weight... How does the concentration of sucrose affect the weight of pieces of potato after osmosis has taken place? Aim The aim of this is experiment is to investigate how much sucrose is in a potato. We are going to investigate the effect of different concentrations of sucrose on the weights of pieces of potato after osmosis has taken place. Prediction I predict that the less concentrated the solution of sucrose is, the greater the weight of the potato will be. I predict this because osmosis is the movement of water from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration through a semi permeable membrane i.e. the cell wall of the potato. If the concentration of water inside the potato is high then the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cell will then begin to shrivel up and become flaccid (floppy). There is always a steady flow from the weaker solution to the stronger solution, which is why we will leave the experiment for a few days to make sure that all the water that will pass through has passed thorough. The water particles also act as though they are trying to dilute the stronger solution and therefore even up the concentrations on either side of the membrane. Some membranes in plant cells, such as in a potato, allow certain particles to pass through them and not others. They are selectively permeable. The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane is called osmosis. The rate at which osmosis takes place is affected by the concentration of water in the two solutions on each side of the membrane. If a selectively permeable membrane separates the two solutions, water moves through it in both directions at the same time. However, more water leaves a dilute solution (high water concentration) and passes into a more concentrated solution (low water concentration) than enters it. Although the water appears to move across the membrane in one direction, it is in fact moving in both directions but more one way than the other. When the concentration of water is the same on both sides of the membrane, the movement of water will be the same in both directions. At this point, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Stress In The Baboons This episode features Stanford University s Neurobiologist, Robert Sapolsky, who has a high understanding of stress and how it affects our not just our health, but our bodies. The main point Robert is conveying to the audience states that stress leads to serious health consequences, such as high blood pressure, weakened immune system, fatigue, development of fat and even the shortening of life expectancy. Robert Sapolsky researches the science behind human stress by exploring non human primates, the baboons in their natural habitat in Kenya, Africa. After thirty years of research, Sapolsky believes that baboons are apparently the perfect source of exemplifying human stress because they are naturally aggressive toward one another, including their offspring, and the pain and stress factors appear to be the same in humans; especially dealing with stressful jobs and verbally abusive bosses. In the baboon s case, if you are a full controlled male, you can expect lower stress levels, and if you are the submissive, abused baboon, the stress level can be much higher. • 16. Similarities Between The Sacho Panza Syndrome And The... The Sancho Panza syndrome (then) and the American dream (then and now) In the 15th century, the combination of the Sancho Panza Syndrome and the American dream fueled exploration at that time and created an incredibly enticing allure of the New World. Exploration and colonization were performed to attain a higher social status, more wealth, and fame. The result of this exploration led to the discovery of new lands and laid the foundation for new countries, but it came with a cost. The perils of the new land discovered were often incredibly treacherous and sometimes times even life threatening, however, the American dream never faded away. The American dream today holds very similar to the American dream in the 15th and 16th centuries despite the gap of 500 years. These dreams are very alike, because they both are comprised of individuals trying to achieve success in lands of opportunity, and although some were prosperous, others were not so fortunate. The American dream today is a household concept, which states that if a person works hard enough, he or she can make a better life for themselves. This concept inspires countless people every day to overcome adversity in attempt to better their life. On a personal level, I can relate to this dream vicariously through my father. My grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1923 from Bisaccia, Italy. The Procaccino family stood firmly on the belief that following the American dream was key to success, but despite how hard my great grandfather worked, the Great Depression drained the money out of the Procaccino household. John (my grandfather) yearned to become a doctor, but due to his family s financial situation, John enlisted in the US Army during World War II. After completing his duties, he earned an engineering degree and became a New York City engineer. John bore two sons named Angelo and John II. Angelo was a naturally gifted child with tremendous brainpower, but John was more of a rapscallion. A concrete example of figurative imagery in Mayes poem is found in the line that reads, Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals. I know that these patients most likely had not been attacked by wild animals over and over again, but when the speaker plants these images in a reader s mind, the suffering that these patients have endured become more realistic to the reader. Sometimes using figurative imagery is much more effective than using a literal image. Mayes wants readers to know how ill some of the patients are. He goes on by describing the 200 miles of scars of a patient and how a boy who [had] shot his face off. Mayes figurative images make a stronger point because they are so blunt. He doesn t seem to beat around the bush; he tells every detail exactly how the speaker saw it. This poem would not give readers the same powerful emotions without the intense imagery and literary tropes Mayes utilizes. Toward the end of the poem, the speaker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Gilgamesh, Beowulf As A Literary Hero It has been a part of humankind since the invention of story to venerate a reflection of what is believed to be the ideal person; complete with strengths, flaws, aspirations, and codes that mold his or her goals, decisions, and, ultimately, fate. Such figures, though imperfect, are celebrated because they are attainable, for perfection is too far beyond the inspirational grip of imagination for many. Each of these heroes, be they Gilgamesh, Beowulf, or Achilles, are motivated toward different goals and take a varied and unique path in order to achieve these goals, which are shaped by the social and political climates in which they are formed. However diverse these character arcs may be, they each share overlapping characteristics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This such loyalty is shared with the acclaimed literary hero Beowulf, who ultimately offers his life in a fierce battle with the dragon for his people. The manner in which Gawain then faces the trials set forth by the Green Knight also demonstrates the strict moral code of sir Gawain; that of the chivalrous knight. His dedication to his code of chivalry is no more evident than in his encounters with the lady of Bertilak s castle; while she incessantly makes advances toward Gawain in his bedchamber, he summons his willpower each time to maintain his code of chivalry and refuse her while remaining courteous. Blekner asserts the moral struggle that Gawain faces in this scene, stating that We are always aware that the real threat is not so much the considerable sexual attractiveness of the lady s flesh as the young hero s fear of not living up to his worldy reputation for cortaysye (Blekner 367). The seduction scene not only illustrates Gawain s heroism through his manner and courtesy towards Bertilak s wife, but also the humanity in his flaws that makes him a true hero. While Gawain is stalwart in his belief in loyalty to his king and chivalry toward women, he is also flawed in that he doesn t tell the lord of the castle about his prize. In these scenes, Gawain shows a fracture in his otherwise infallible demeanor; a weakness that he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. The Relationship Between Troilus And Criseyde The relationship between Troilus and Criseyde in Geoffrey Chaucer s adaptation of their tragic love story notably hinges on the perception of Troilus s manhod. The interpretation of Troilus as a feminized male character, and the consequent view that he was not manly enough to keep Criseyde as his lover, exemplifies the importance Chaucer places on gender roles in the poem. Troilus s passive nature, as a result of his lovesickness, led to his failure to obey the normative masculine patterns of behavior. His lack of action is ultimately the reason why his relationship with Criseyde fails. While we know the tragic ending to their story is inevitable, Chaucer s Troilus and Criseyde presents gender as a central cause for its ending. In the first portrait of Troilus, Chaucer presents us with a manly young knight at ease with his respectable and authoritative position: This Troilus, as he was wont to gide His yonge knyghtes, lad hem up and down In thilke large temple on every side, Beholding ay the ladies of the town, Now here, now there; for no devocioun Hadde he to non, to reven hym his reste, But gan to preise and lakken whom hym leste (I. 183 189) Troilus is represented here as a strong leader. He guides the knights through the temple and gazes at the ladies of the town as he pleases. He mocks the other knights who foolishly fall in love; Troilus is above that type of behavior. Young children cleaned fresh vegetables by wide open fields of golden grains. Fathers hunted at dusk on the distant planes, when the buffalo were lulled into peaceful rest by the glorious sunset. The Impauwakans were in shock for only two of the oldest tribal members have ever heard him speak. Because of this, they knew that what he was planning must have been important. He led them out of familiar grounds into crowded forests and large fields, forcing their pace into a sprint in the darkness and a quick tread upon sunrise. Over time, his people grew weaker and weaker as the moons turned on, but the tribe knew better than to disobey their leader. So, they pressed on with increasingly heavy legs and cramping stomachs. According to Kevin Brown, you have to do whatever the frat [or sorority] tells you to do to get in, and that could be anything. Some sororities will paddle each other till their behinds are bleeding. • 28. The Invention Of The Scientific Revolution Women in the Scientific Revolution The scientific revolution is generally considered part of the broader intellectual revolution that began with the Italian Renaissance and the rediscovery and translation of the classical writers, particularly Aristotle, sometime during the fourteenth century. It is only in retrospect that one can understand broad movements, such as this, but one can assert with confidence that the scientific revolution resulted from a confluence of several factors, most particularly the rejection of the Ptolemaic model of planetary movement combined with an increased interest in Aristotelian science (Grant, 1996). Thus, the scientific revolution, insofar as it was a revolution rather than a developing, continuous process, may be claimed to have begun in 1543 with the publication of Copernicus De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, though establishing this as a boundary is as much a matter of convenience as anything else (Linton, 2004). As an intellectual and cultural phenomenon, the scientific revolution continues to the present, moving through such advances as Newtonian mechanics, the experimental method of chemistry, advanced in anatomy and medicine, Darwinian evolution, relativity and quantum mechanics, with myriad offshoots at every stage along the way of this development. At the present, there is much dispute about how, or whether, the scientific revolution will end: some think it will continue forever, while others believe it will culminate with ... Hughes took every issue that he felt was necessary in the accurate representation of the Negro man, and projected through the life of Semple. Hughes also took the name Semple and often called him, Simple to emphasize how simple his life seemed at a glance, but in fact it was not simple at all. The events Jesse B. The Affair began in September 1894 when The French Army Intelligence Bureau intercepted a letter supposedly written by Alfred Dreyfus. Alfred Dreyfus was court martialed for treason and revealing military secrets to the Germans in his letter. This false accusation was easily accomplished given the antisemitism of the time, combined with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like many innocent people, the letters from Alfred are filled with the questions on the verdict and claims of innocence. He used these questions once sentenced to restore his honor by acquittal. These positive thoughts of acquittal prevented his suicide on Devil s Island (Dreyfus 138). Although Alfred Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or military change, his attempts to advocate for his innocence led to a political and cultural divide in France. The Dreyfus Affair was a main cause of the tremendous unrest in France. It unleased a strong anti Semitism movement in France because of a perceived failure of the justice system (Fischel 119). It deeply divided France in politics, religion, and national identity. The acquittal of Alfred Dreyfus gave justice to him and marked a turning point in history, in which it was a magnificent step forward in an era of progress for ideas of liberty, of justice, and of social solidarity (Dreyfus 241). Although Alfred Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or military change, the primary source, an open letter by Emile Zola J accuse advocated for these things. J accuse was published in defense of Alfred Dreyfus in L Aurore, a popular French newspaper. The French press both helped to convict and acquit Alfred Dreyfus to Devil s Island; during the ... • 40. 3T3 Morphology and Lipid Analysis of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation Erin Kim 1 Abstract This report will look at the morphology of 3T3 L1 cells pre and post differentiation and the percent lipid in our adipocytes after differentiation. The analysis of cell morphology is important to study cell behaviour such as the uptake of nutrients [1]. Three different plates of 3T3 L1 cells were examined. 2 of the plates were grown then differentiated into adipocytes. After differentiation, these cells were fixed with formalin then one was stained with Oil Red O. The last plate was grown to confluency, but did not undergo differentiation before fixing with formalin. After imaging these cells using a fluorescence microscope, the images were analyzed with the Image J software. Image J analyzed the shape index of the cell our results showed the adipocytes to have a shape index of 0.888±0.030 in comparison to than the undifferentiated fibroblasts, which had a shape index of 0.335±0.082. The Shape index measures how round or elongated a cell is. The closer the shape index is to 1, the rounder the cell ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These 3T3 L1 cells are capable of differentiating from fibroblasts into adipocytes under certain conditions. 3T3 L1 cells are classified as Biosafety Level 1 [2]. 3T3 L1 cells divide rapidly until they reach 100 percent confluency, which primes them to differentiate into adipocytes. The purpose of this study was to examine 3T3 L1 cells before and after differentiation to compare their morphology and lipid content. 1 Before staining the differentiated cells, they were fixed using formalin (cross linking) to preserve the cell structure. By staining the cells with Oil Red O, we were able to stain the lipid within the cell, which increases the contrast of a cell and makes it easier to visualize the lipid content within each cell ... • 41. Postpartum Depression And The Depression The postpartum time period is depicted as a joyful time for mothers, but in some cases it can be a time of calamity (Jevitt, Groer, Crist, Gonzalez, Wagner, 2012). Postpartum Depression (PPD) in women after childbirth is a common occurrence. It happens in all races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. PPD is a severe depression that affects mothers after childbirth. It involves serious depression, sadness, and loneliness. Cheryl Tatano Beck is a nursing theorist who is known for her work and research with postpartum depression and the development of the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) and the development of the Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory (PDPI) (Alligood, 2014). She began her focus on obstetrical nursing after she graduated from Western Connecticut State University in 1970 (Alligood, 2014). Beck s focus was first on studying women in labor and fetal monitoring (Alligood, 2014). She then moved to studying and researching PPD. Beck noticed that there was not much research done on the disorder (Alligood, 2014). Beck wrote her theory called teetering on the edge, as part of her doctorate thesis is 1993 (Alligood, 2014). This thesis focused on the importance of different risk factors and concepts regarding postpartum depression and is the foundation of her theory. Foundations of the Theory Beck s theory on Postpartum Depression is strongly based upon many other theorists work. She emphasizes the importance of Jean Watson s caring ... Oxygen containing functional groups are the most abundant and are ultimately the most important for binding metal ions (Logan et al., 1997). Interaction of metal ions with humic acids The formation of covalent link between metal ions and the humic acid, formation of H bonding, as well as, electrostatic interface can promote the interaction between HA and metal ions. In the micellar aggregates, the hydrophilic part of the molecule including carboxyl groups and phenolic hydroxyl groups apprehends the aromatic structure. Complexation with the hydrophilic part of HA acid have been formed as a consequence of the interaction with metal ions, also increasing the ratio of aromatic structure (Dudare and Klavins, 2012). HS complexing capacity varies as a function of pH. Two binding patterns are possibly present: at acid neutral pH (carboxylates) and at alkaline pH (carboxylate and phenolic groups). The binding patterns, binding strength, stability and solubility depend on the complexed metal. Complex solubility depends on the concentration of free ionized functional groups and the molecular weight (Garcia Mina, 2006). Erdogan et al. (2007) manifested that the differences in sorption ability of particular metal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Georgia in the Civil Rights Movement Georgia in the Civil Rights Movement Contemporary History Research Paper The civil rights movement was a time of great upheaval and change for the entire United States, but it was especially so in the South. The civil rights movement in the American South was one of the most triumphant and noteworthy social movements in the modern world. The civil rights movement was an enduring effort by Black Americans to obtain basic human and civil rights in the United States. Black Georgians formed part of this Southern movement for civil rights and the wider national struggle for racial equality. From Atlanta to Albany to the most rural counties in Georgia, black activists, and their white allies, protested white supremacy in a myriad of ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movement gained a great deal of support among black people in Georgia because Henry McNeal Turner, an African Methodist Episcopal bishop and political leader, became an avid supporter (Tuck, 2003). Also, during this time, black Georgians began establishing churches and schools within their own separate communities as a safeguard from the discrimination and racism they faced on a regular basis. World War II and its aftermath effected great changes in Georgia s civil rights struggle. Large numbers of blacks moved to the west and the north to share in the wartime prosperity, giving the minority problem a national rather than a regional character. In Georgia, and elsewhere, urbanization was also rapidly accelerated and large numbers of blacks who fought in the armed services against tyranny and injustice abroad began to more keenly feel the injustice at home. The fight for democracy in Europe offered the perfect opportunity for black leaders to press for racial change in the South. In 1944, Primus King, a black man registered to vote in Georgia, attempted to cast a ballot in the Democratic primary. He was turned away by a police officer who escorted him off the premises of the Muscogee County Courthouse. This was a time in Georgia where the Democratic Party controlled all of the politics in Georgia and in the South. Primus King s challenge to the white primary was planned by a group of black civil rights ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. North Korea s Moranbong Band, My Heart Performed by North Korea s Moranbong Band, My Heart is a song of contrast. Contrast between complex and straightforward, and bright and dark, both in the instrumentation and lyrical content. It is inside of these contrasts that the listener can begin to understand the song s political message. Beginning with sudden, energetic burst of violins, piano, electric guitar, electric bass, and a drum kit, the song s intro is heavily syncopated and rhythmically varied. After a short call and response section between the piano and rest of the band, every instrument in unison performs a rising, 8th note riff that connects to the verse. It is here when the vocals come in where the intro s powerful energy slides into a less driving, more mellow mood. The intro grabs the listener s attention, but once the lyrics come in the music slides back to allow the singer to be dominant. Rhythmical, the core of My Heart lies in the 4/4 time signature with emphasis on the backbeat. While the bass sticks to hitting quarter notes with the drums, guitar and piano provide syncopation in the verses by playing on the offbeats. Together with a tempo that comfortably ... • 46. , Wonder Woman And Wonder Woman Greek Mythology Heroes In this paper I will analyze two characters in two separate works, one from a literary text and one from a film. The focus of this paper will be on heroes that have a relationship to an element of mythology. I will use the character Odysseus from Homer s epic poem, The Odyssey and the character Wonder Woman from the American superhero film Wonder Woman . In this essay I will analyze the gender, appearance, actions, and roles that these heroes have. Throughout this essay, I will also discuss the negative characteristics that both these heroes have, such as their violent actions towards others. Heroes possess numerous qualities that make them great, however, there are certain qualities of a hero that are consistent throughout Greek mythology; bravery, intelligence, and strength. These qualities are significant to these two Greek Mythologies because these heroes are known to bravely risk their lives for others, using their wisdom to guide them, all while fighting strongly for what they believe in. This paper will serve to prove that regardless of the gender of each of these personas, the characteristics that define a hero remain consistent. To begin, I would like to provide the reader with some background information that pertains to these heroes. Wonder Woman is a superhero who is also known as Princess Diana, and she grew up on the Amazon Island of Themyseria. Wonder Woman has been granted superhero powers by Zeus, to fight against Ares if he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
