Women s Magazines Are Littered With Beauty Advertisements
Women s magazines are littered with beauty advertisements. On one page, a mascara
ad promises thick and long lashes as a symmetrically faced woman holds the wand to
her eyes. Her skin is pore less and she appears mechanical.. Turn the page and an actress
/model stands with legs the circumference of an arm. She is modeling jeans, yet they are
barely on her body. This kind of advertisingdoes not end at the actual advertisements. The
truth is that the magazineitself is an advertisement of its reader s inadequacy.
Furthermore, the magazine as a whole serves as an advertisement to a woman s
assumed lack of confidence. Almost every product featured in popular women s
magazines is a paid placement. It s no secret that magazine publications are struggling
as more consumers migrate to online platforms. Without subscriber funding,
publications are forced to fund their company in various ways similar to how a person
will work many jobs in order to pay rent. Paid promotional articles and features fill this
gap created by declining subscribers. This makes all of the adverts and all of the
articles about fat loss and shiny hair even more trivial and unsubstantial. This issue could
be excused, but it remains hard to ignore considering how much lack of diversity factors
into this nook of the publication world. Cosmopolitan s slogan is Fun. Fearless. Female.
which indicates that it is geared towards an audience of women that is young and old,
multi racial, thick or thin. The contents
The Practice Of Genital Mutilation
Final Paper The practice of genital mutilation is a cultural tradition performed across
central Africa, in the southern Sahara, and in parts of the Middle East. Most women
who have experienced FGC live in one of the 28 countries in Africa and the Middle
East where FGC is practiced. Almost one half of women who have experienced FGC
live in Egypt or Ethiopia. To a lesser degree, FGC is practiced in Indonesia, Malaysia,
Pakistan, and India. Some immigrants practice various forms of FGC in other parts of
the world, including Australia, Cana da, New Zealand, the United States, and in
European nations. Circumcision is a religious or cultural ritual for many Jewish and

Female circumcision in Africa is completed in order to prove that the female is going
to be able to endure life s hardships, and that she will be able to handle responsibility
when older. Muslims believe females must get circumcised in order to curb the
female s sexual desire. After the procedure, the women are expected to get married
and start their own families. This procedure is usually done on young girls between
infancy and the age of 15, most likely before puberty starts. The procedure is
traditionally carried out by a woman with no medical training. Anesthetics and
antiseptic treatments are not normally used, and the practice is usually carried out
using knives, scissors, and scalpels, pieces of glass or razor blades. Girls are
sometimes put down in restraints. There are some immediate and long term effects to
this procedure including, severe pain, shock, bleeding, HIV and hepatitis, abnormal
periods, complication in pregnancy and pain in sex. It can also sometimes lead to
death. Surgery can be performed to open up the lower vagina called the reversal ,
although it cannot restore sensitive tissue that has been removed. Surgery may be
necessary for women who are unable to have intercourse, as the vagina is too narrow.
In addition, some pregnant women who have had FGM will need to have their lower
vagina opened up before labor, to allow a safer birth. FGM increases the risk of the
vagina tearing during delivery, which causes damage and can lead to
Wooden Roller Coasters
What was really the purpose of having a roller coaster? Well, the purpose of it is to have
fun, because everyone likes to go fast right? Well, roller coasters can from to zero to
128 miles per hour that (206 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, pulling about 1.67 g force. Mostly
roller coasters made out of metal. Wooden roller coasters can go up to 66 mph max.
After roller coasters started back around 1885 most of them were made out of wood.
One of the first roller coasters was built by Lamarcus Adana Thompson in 1885. His
roller coaster was called Russian Mountains . It was built over St. Petersburg in Russia.
Others believe that the first modern roller coaster was built by the French and was made
out of steel. Back then, the roller coasters was 50 cents ... Show more content on

For some wooden roller coasters, the support structure was made out of steel or lattice
or truss, but the ride remains as a wooden roller coaster. Wooden roller coasters are also
identified as the most dangerous roller coasters out there because the wood could not be
strong enough to hold up the weight of the coaster, and it breaks. Most of the time the
wood breaks from the rain getting the wood wet and making it weak over time.
The first metal coasters came around, it was 1959 and the first steel roller coaster was
built in Six Flags in Texas in 1966. Steel coasters are safer but still dangerous because
they go at higher speeds. They are more fun than wooden ones because they are
smooth but still throw you around. However it does not hurt you as much as a
wooden does. Some wooden roller coasters don t have seatbelts; they just have a bar
that goes over your lap. The person who invented roller coasters was this guy who
named was Lamarcus Adna Thompson he built his first coaster on January 20, 1885
in St. Petersburg. It was made out of wood, supported by steel beams with a coaster
with four wheels, and a metal bar in the cart to keep the passengers in the cart. The slides
were built to height of between 21 and 24m (70 and 80 feet), consisted of a 50 degree

Caliphate of Umar II
Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz
Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz was born in the year 63 Hijrah. His father Abdul Aziz was the
appointed Wali of Egypt and when Umar was young he sent him to AlMadinah to be
raised in an Islamic environment. So he went, memorised the
Qur aan at a young age and was educated by the foremost scholars from the Islamic
Ummah and from the great generation that followed the Sahaabah (rah). When his father
passed away the Ummayyad Khaleefah Abdul Maalik called him to

Until today this Aayah is recited in nearly every Khutbah that is given every week in all
four corners of the world.
A lot of the revenue that Banu Ummayyah would take from the subjects was from the
Jizyah and they abused this system by continuing to take it from those who accepted
Islaam and they also made little effort to spread the Islamic culture amongst the non
Muslim subjects or encourage them to become Muslim. Umar changed this and made
efforts to spread the Islamic culture amongst the populace with the result that most of
Egypt and Persia embraced Islam. His family complained that this would lead to a fall in
revenues. However, by applying the correct Sharee ah rules related to the economy
which encouraged trade and agriculture the Islamic state began to flourish. He also
enforced the collection of
Zakaah and its correct distribution according to the Sharee ah rules so that the true
justice of Islaam was felt by the entire Ummah. Umar was also strongly opposed to the

And as I have learned from our Marketing class discussion, managing and establishing a
good branding of your products are of great importance when entering into the realm of
business. But, despite its known importance, many people may still have linked the
meaning of brand to just the name or label of a business. Here, we must know that it is
definitely more than just that.
As defined by Kotler and Armstrong (2013), a brand is a name, term, sign, symbol,
design, or a combination of these that identifies the seller or the product or service from
its competitors. With that being said, it really does encompass a broader definition as to
what the name only suggests. Thus, anything associated with its composition name, term,
sign, symbol or design can critically affect the brand of a business and hence, could

The Life of Geroge Armstrong Custer
Synopsis: George Armstrong Custer was a West Point graduate who attained military
promotions to brigadier general and major general in the regular army on March 13,
1865 and major general of volunteers April 15, 1865 during the American Civil War.
Later in 1870 s, Custer moved to the west to fight in the Indian Wars. On June 25, 1876,
a battle at Little Bighorn against Lakota and Cheyennewarriors was fought where he led
210 men. Custer and all of his men were killed in the battle. The battle, also known as
Custer s Last Stand, was part of the Black Hills War against a confederation of Plains
Indians, including the Cheyenne and Dakota Sioux. It is considered one of the most
controversial battles in U.S. history. A cavalry commander in the United States Army,
Custer fought in both the Indian Wars as well as the Civil War. He was born and
brought up in Ohio and Michigan and West Point admitted in 1858. During the Civil
War he gained a reputation that was strong because of whom he associated with. The
Battle of Bull Run was his first major involvement. He had a temporary promotion to
major general but returned to captain at the end of the war. After the Civil Wars, he left
for the west and the Indian Wars. He led the 7th Cavalry in the battle of Washita River.
Later, in 1873, he was sent to the Dakota Territory to help protect a railroad survey crew
from attacks by the Lakota Indians.

Minotaur Research Paper
The myth of the Minotaur comes from the Island of Crete. King Minos of Crete was
the son of Europa and Zeus, but King Asterion still raised Minos as his own along with
his two brothers. To become king after Asterion had passed, Minos prayed to the God
Poseidon to provide him with a spectacular white bull to sacrifice to the god. Poseidon
granted Mino s wish, showing the people, he was the rightful ruler over his two brothers.
Minoshowever, did not sacrifice the bull and chosen a lesser one in its place. Poseidon
became angry over Mino s disobedience. Mino s wife, Pasiphae, was installed with
lusting desire for the white bull by Poseidon as revenge. With the help of Daedalusand
Icarus, Pasiphae became pregnant by the animal. The name of Minotaur
Simvastatin
Simvastatin
Introduction
Simvastatin is used to lower the cholesterol level in the blood such as the low density
lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides and to raise the high density lipoprotein (HDL), It
decreases the risk of heart diseases and helps to prevent the heart attacks and strokes by
reducing the amount of cholesterol that is made by the liver (Raleys.com, 2015).
Chemical structure and functional groups
Simvastatin is one of the statins derivatives that is synthesised from a fermentation
product of Aspergillus terreus. The simvastatin is an inactive lactone which is hydrolysed
to the ОІ hydroxyacid form when it is taken orally. ОІ hydroxyacid form is an inhibitor
of 3 hydroxy 3 methylglutaryl coenzyme A(HMG CoA) reductase. This enzyme ... Show

The mode of action
Statins are competitive inhibitors HMG CoA reductase, it has been considered as a first
line for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Their mode of action is by mimicking the
substrate molecule HMG CoA and competes for binding to the HMGCR enzyme. It
works by slowing the production rate of mevalonate which responsible for the production
of cholesterol molecule.
Most of the cholesterol synthesis in the body is done by internal mechanism through the
liver cells particularly at night during fasting; it is taken at night to inhibit the cholesterol
production. It maximizes its inhibitory effect and the data shows a significant fall in the
LDL and a fall in the total cholesterol level in the blood.
Simvastatin can have different pharmacological effects from other statins groups due to
different ring structures and chemical side groups such as different affinity toward the
receptors, different rates of connection to liver cells from non liver cells, different
bioavailability and biochemical metabolism and execration. All these factors affect its
half life which is short (Anon, 2015).
Statins are selective towards the hepatic cells because of their lipophilic properties. It
passes through the membrane towards the cell

Confederate Flag Banning
The Confederate flag means heritage and hate, therefore it should not be banned. That
is a topic that a lot of people would say yes the flag should be banned, but in return a lot
of people would also say no it should not be banned. While there is such a big outbreak
of whether the Confederate flag should be taken down or not, there are some people
that believe the flag represents heritage and hate. There are two sides to this
controversy, if the Confederate flag got taken down it would make a lot of Americans
happy but it would also upset and piss off a lot of Americans. The flag has without a
doubt become one of the most talked about controversies in a long time. I don t think the

While Stars and Bars have long been associated by many with slavery, the latest
campaign to remove Confederate emblems has extended beyond the flag to statues,
memorials, parks and even school mascots. The debate over what symbolizes heritage
and what stands for hate has never covered so much ground, as efforts to remove icons
that have been part of the visual and cultural landscape of the South for decades are a

An Informative Essay On Wild Turkeys
The wild turkey is an animal most people have heard of because of hunting reasons,
but do you know the basic facts? The wild turkey species has 6 subspecies; these
include the eastern wild turkey, Osceola (Florida) wild turkey, Rio Grande wild turkey,
Merriam s wild turkey, Gould s wild turkey, and Ocellated wild turkey. These turkeys are
different in color but are mostly the same because they are the same species of animal.
The wild turkey is dark in color, either brown, black, or a similar color. Their wings are
dark and are boldly barred with white. The rump and tail of the animal are tipped with
a rustic color or white. The final part of the animal, the bare skin of the head and neck,
are varieties of red, blue, or gray. Both male and female measurements for the wild
turkey species are the same. The length is 43.3 45.3 inches. The wingspan is 49.2 56.7
inches. The weight is 88.2 381 ounces. These birds are very large, round animals with

There are many more varieties of nuts and seeds that they enjoy eating. In deep snow of
the winter and when nuts and seeds cannot be found, wild turkeys eat hemlock buds,
evergreen ferns, spore covered fronds of sensitive ferns, club mosses, and burdock.
During the spring months, they eat plant bulbs. In the late spring and summer, their diet

The Self, the Other, and the Possibility of Liberation
The primary objective of this research is to illustrate the manner in which the theoretical
formulations of Latin American thinker Enrique Dussel have come to revolutionize the
way in which ethics and philosophy have been traditionally thought of. In his Г‰tica de
la LiberaciГіn en la Edad de la IndustrializaciГіn y de la Exclusion (1998), Dussel seeks
to construct a theoretical framework that carters to liberate the victims of the highly
globalized world system we are part of today. Dussel attempts to do so by providing an
ethical account that directly objects and deconstructs the post modern ontological view
of reality that has been abstracted and selfishly imposed upon the world as a universal
fact of existence, reflective of everything that is and has ever been.
Dussel s ethical discourse can be thought of as being composed of three dimensions
corresponding to three aspects of reason: (1) The Material Moment of Ethics Practical
Truth, (2) Formal Morality Intersubjective Validity, and (3) Ethical Feasibility the
Goodness Claim.
(1)The Material Moment of Ethics Practical Truth
The Ethics of Liberation, according to Dussel, is an ethics of life. And for this reason,
the material principle of this ethics imposes an obligation to produce, reproduce and
develop the concrete human life of each ethical subject
Blue Kite Symbolism
The Kite Runner uses blue symbolically to show the guilt that follows the story s
characters. This novel is filled with references to past guilt that people hold onto as
they grow up. This is most prominently seen in our main character, Amir, who never
learned how to redeem himself for the atrocities he committed in his youth. Leading
him to be often haunted by his past mistakes no matter how long ago they were or how
far away he gets away. However basically any character that is followed for any length of
time can be seen with guilt and blue. Throughout the novel there are several references
to blue kites which haunt Amir because the thing he receives most of his guilt from
happens because of a blue kite. The initial event that Amir receives this guilt comes
from a cold winter day where his childhood friend and half brother, Hassan, went to
receive the final kite. Amir cut down a beautiful blue kite, and when Hassan gets this
kite for Amir he gets jumped by some bullies who had previously been chased off by
Hassan because he wanted to protect Amir. This embarrassment led their leader, Assef,
to rape Hassan in an alley after chasing him down. He is left watching unable to bring
himself to stop this event even to the point where he has a vision where he is left in a

It is seen in all the things around Amir from the kites he seeks and the presents he
receives from others. There is a large theme that past guilt follows the characters and so
does blue whether it be their eyes or what they take with them. There is no question to
what the color blue means after seeing how this color appears alongside so many things
that bring the characters back to their worst moments. In the end none of the characters
are blameless but they all find a way to continue on from blue and get to a better
Beastie Boys Research Paper
When I first browsed through the different topics on which we were to write essays

all the bands and artists I know and love, I knew there would be no problem writing this

The Beastie Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and
The Righteous Brothers.
One of the main reasons why I adore the Beastie Boys like many others is because of
their care free energetic aura that they mix together with captivating sounds discretely
concealing rhetorical puns. What makes them especially unique to me is their
transformation from a rowdy party punk band to a mixture of pop, rock, and hip hop. In
addition to a change musically, it was clear that their maturity shifted alongside it. This

experiencing many struggles in his own life, Cash was able to translate his own
emotions and thoughts into lyrics with rhythmic beats that attracted the average

East And East Berlin Wall Economic Analysis
The Belin Wall: a Divide between Two Economies
When the prominent Indian economist B. R. Shenoy visited Berlin in 1960, he
witnessed two completely differing parts of the same city (Shenoy). A wall divided
Berlin into two separate areas, West Berlin and East Berlin. West Berlin, a capitalist
economy, boomed with economic freedom and prosperity. While East Berlin, a
command economy, verged on economic collapse. The example of West and East Berlin
demonstrates that a capitalist economy, also known as a free market economy, is better
than a command economy. To understand the origin of the different economic situations
of the same city, it is necessary to look back in history to the end of World War II. Two
months after victory in Europe, on July 1945, France, Britain, the United States, and the
Soviet Union met to determine what to do with conquered Germany. They divided the
county into four zones, one zone for each of the victor nations (Gaps). The French,

Significances Of Total Solar Eclipses
A Total Solar Eclipse occurs when the visible portion of our Moon covers the visible
portion of our sun, causing it to seem like a white ring with a black center, causing an
extremely unique view of our sun and Moon. The Total Solar Eclipse can only be seen
from a few points in the world, in the umbral shadow. Most people in the world will only
see a partial Solar Eclipse, where the Moonwill only cover a portion of the sun, due to
the fact that they re in the penumbral. While not as unique, it s still a rare sight to

coincidence of the Moon and sun being the same size to our eyes. While our sun is 400
times the size of our Moon, our sun is also 400 times farther away, causing them to
appear the same size in our sky.
As previously stated, you can only see a Total Solar Eclipse from an umbral shadow,
which is the darkest part of the shadow cast on the Earth. This only happens when the
Moon Totally covers the sun, but this is not the only factor. The Moon also has to be
close to, or at the point of perigee, the point of the Moon s orbit closest to Earth. The
penumbral shadow is only visible when the Moon only partly obscures the Sun s disk,
causing a partial Solar Eclipse, but there are still more. There s the Annular Solar
Eclipse, which is similar to a Total Solar Eclipse, but the Moon is too small to
completely cover the sun, and the Sun s outer edges remain visible to form a ring of
fire in the sky. This can only happen when the Moon is near to, or at the point of
apogee, the point of the Moon s orbit farthest from Earth, and can only be seen from
the Moon s antumbra. The last type of eclipse, Hybrid Solar Eclipses, also known as
annular Total eclipses, are the rarest type. This only occurs when a Solar Eclipse
changes between a Total Solar Eclipse and an Annular Solar Eclipse along it s path.
According to the article What Are Solar Eclipses? on the website timeanddate.com
/eclipse/solar eclipse.html For a solar eclipse to take place, the Sun, the Moon, and Earth
must be aligned in a perfect or near perfect straight line an alignment astronomers call
syzygy. This happens around New Moon every lunar month. There are 2
International Criminal Court Argumentative Essay
In 1998, the International Criminal Court was created through the Rome Statute. The
court was made with the intention of being a justice system that had jurisdiction over
international crimes such as war crimes and genocide. Originally, there were 124 states
that ratified the International Criminal Court and there were 31 states that signed.
Recently, states have decided to leave the International Criminal Courtor retract their
signatures. There are many arguments as to why these states are choosing to leave, but,
specifically for African states like South Africa, people argue that the International
Criminal Court is mainly prosecuting crimes committed in Africa; they believe they are
spending an unfair amount of time on the crimes in... Show more content on

From the point of view of a realist, states tend to pursue their own interests. Specifically,
states that have not ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court can do
what they deem necessary whether or not it is in accordance with international law.
Therefore, states, such as South Africa, are driven by their own self interest to leave the
International Criminal Court. For South Africa, their self interests may include
protecting their citizens from what they believe is an unjust court system. African
leaders, like the leaders in South Africa, believe that the International Court System is
biased and is a tool for Europe to beat up on Africa. (NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE). In
particular, realists believe that self interest is driven by the state s pursuit of power. In
this case, the countries that are not under the International Criminal Court s jurisdiction
do not have to follow the international laws that are defined in the Rome Statute.
Therefore, in pursuit of power, the South African government may choose to follow the
suit of other powerful countries and leave the International Criminal Court. In contrast to
the realist view, constructivism is based on the fact that the system is created by the
states, and, therefore, anarchy is
Analysis Of The Poem The Scarlett Letter By Nathaniel...
The view of nature changed during the course of time periods and throughout my seven
reading reflections. I started my reflections during colonial time with The Scarlett Letter
by Nathaniel Hawthorn. During the puritan era nature was seen as a sin. The forest
where Hester and Dimmesdale reconnected their love was seen as the place where the
black man lives . Embracing natureand its carefreeness was seen as a dreadful decision,
and this changed over time. On the other hand, my second journal was all about imagery
and the beauty of nature. Walt Whitmans I Saw in Louisiana a Live Oak Growing is a
comparison of a tree and the narrator s life. The narrator knows he cannot live an
independent existence like the oak tree does. He... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is a transformation from the previous journal and the peacefulness of Mother
Nature that was described. After Crane, the next journal is about a well known poem
by Robert Frost Stopping by the woods on a Snowy Evening . Nature in this poem is
seen as a place that pulls the narrator away from reality, so much that he considers
ending his own life. This poem is full of beautiful New England imagery. The snow
blanket covering the forest can be a deadly concealment over the narrator. He does not
seem to mind that he is mentally getting lost in nature s exquisiteness. The poem
leaves the reader on edge because it does not actually say if the man left this
captivating place or if he is literally consumed by its magnificence. This is a modernist
poem due to the fact it can be taken in so many ways and leaves us with no answer. Next
I reflected on Ernest Hemingway s Big Two Hearted River . Nick, a war veteran,
compares himself to numerous aspects of nature, including soot covered grasshoppers.
Nick feels a bond with these insects due to the fact they were both hurt and have a
layer of hurt over them. Nick had a special spot in the forest before he left for the war.
When he came back he felt the same special feeling, which shows natures power and
healing. Since returning from combat he feels more respectful of nature and animals, not
even wanted to hurt a fish. Even though Nick is delighted
Jerome Karabel s The Battle Over Merit
Jerome Karabel has explored many areas of the college admissions process and is
unhappy with his findings. In his text, The Battle Over Merit , Karabel concludes that
the college admissions process has to be updated, so that everyone gets a fair and
equal chance to get into these institutions. He includes a substantial argument of how
college admissions have evolved and has been initially favoring one social group. This
justification shows the concept of privilege and a need for inclusion. Karabel believes
that race shouldn t be a factor of change, but socio economic backgrounds should be a
way for students to get help and get into these schools, because they need it the most. He
also brings up the idea of power and politics and that the... Show more content on

The author believes there needs to be change in the admissions process and that
includes the very aspect of early admissions. He believes that there needs to be equal
opportunity for students to get into these institutions, but early admissions can play a
valuable role for this change. If the author desires an admissions process where more
students can be able to be admitted in an equal way, why does he condemn and
denounce early admissions? Karabel states in this text that early admissions have been
notorious for benefiting the privileged and only them. In my perspective, this is false. I
believe that everyone has an equal chance of getting in and those who know they are
qualified, try to apply early so they do not have to worry about regular admissions and
getting their college acceptances late. Karabel still disagrees with this argument. He says,
The problem with these programs is twofold: students who use them enjoy an advantage
in the admissions process, and students admitted on early decision (though not early
action) are obliged to attend the accepting institution and hence cannot compare financial
aid offers. Both patterns further advantage the already advantaged (551). This proves the
author s limited perspective and truth. He says that students who use them enjoy an
advantage (551), which they actually deserve if they want to. The students are benefitted
only if they know in full consideration that they will
Inner Conflict in Gaines A Lesson Before Dying Essay
Inner Conflict in Gaines A Lesson Before Dying
They sentence you to death because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time,
with no proof that you had anything at all to do with the crime other than being there
when it happened. Yet six months later they come and unlock your cage and tell you,
We, us, white folks all, have decided it s time for you to die, because this is the
convenient date and time (158). Ernest J. Gaines shows the internal conflicts going
through the mind of Mr. Wiggins in his novel A LessonBefore Dying (1933). Mr.
Wiggins is struggling through life and can t find his way until he is called upon against
his own will to help an innocent man, Jefferson. The help is not that of freeing him at all.

Wiggins true character is revealed. In saying, Are you trying to hurt me, Jefferson? Are
you trying to make me feel guilty for your being here? You want me to come back here
anymore? (84). He is trying to figure out if there is anyway possible to get out of the
situation brought to him. Grant believes if he can get Jefferson s consent he will no
longer have to do something he doesn t what to do. The only problem is that Grant
need Jefferson more than he knows. This is brought out when he starts to talk about
leaving the farm in which he grew up. On page 94, the author has a series of quotes of
Mr. Wiggins and Vivian that say, I wish I could just run away from this place. Vivian
shook her head.
You know you can t. Why not? For the same reason you haven t done it yet. I ve wanted
to. But you haven t
Why? Vivian goes on to say how Grant loves the people in the area more than he hates
the place. There is more to it though. Grant is scared he can t make it in the outside
world. He saw it when he was educated there. He shows that he needs someone or
something to help him move on, and that someone just might be Jefferson.
In one quote of Mr. Wiggins, he contradicts everything he has done in the story. I don t
know when I m going to die. . . I try to live as well as I can every day and not hurt
people. Especially people who love me, people

  • 2. Women s Magazines Are Littered With Beauty Advertisements Women s magazines are littered with beauty advertisements. On one page, a mascara ad promises thick and long lashes as a symmetrically faced woman holds the wand to her eyes. Her skin is pore less and she appears mechanical.. Turn the page and an actress /model stands with legs the circumference of an arm. She is modeling jeans, yet they are barely on her body. This kind of advertisingdoes not end at the actual advertisements. The truth is that the magazineitself is an advertisement of its reader s inadequacy. Furthermore, the magazine as a whole serves as an advertisement to a woman s assumed lack of confidence. Almost every product featured in popular women s magazines is a paid placement. It s no secret that magazine publications are struggling as more consumers migrate to online platforms. Without subscriber funding, publications are forced to fund their company in various ways similar to how a person will work many jobs in order to pay rent. Paid promotional articles and features fill this gap created by declining subscribers. This makes all of the adverts and all of the articles about fat loss and shiny hair even more trivial and unsubstantial. This issue could be excused, but it remains hard to ignore considering how much lack of diversity factors into this nook of the publication world. Cosmopolitan s slogan is Fun. Fearless. Female. which indicates that it is geared towards an audience of women that is young and old, multi racial, thick or thin. The contents

Female circumcision in Africa is completed in order to prove that the female is going to be able to endure life s hardships, and that she will be able to handle responsibility when older. Muslims believe females must get circumcised in order to curb the female s sexual desire. After the procedure, the women are expected to get married and start their own families. This procedure is usually done on young girls between infancy and the age of 15, most likely before puberty starts. The procedure is traditionally carried out by a woman with no medical training. Anesthetics and antiseptic treatments are not normally used, and the practice is usually carried out using knives, scissors, and scalpels, pieces of glass or razor blades. Girls are sometimes put down in restraints. There are some immediate and long term effects to this procedure including, severe pain, shock, bleeding, HIV and hepatitis, abnormal periods, complication in pregnancy and pain in sex. It can also sometimes lead to death. Surgery can be performed to open up the lower vagina called the reversal , although it cannot restore sensitive tissue that has been removed. Surgery may be necessary for women who are unable to have intercourse, as the vagina is too narrow. In addition, some pregnant women who have had FGM will need to have their lower vagina opened up before labor, to allow a safer birth. FGM increases the risk of the vagina tearing during delivery, which causes damage and can lead to

For some wooden roller coasters, the support structure was made out of steel or lattice or truss, but the ride remains as a wooden roller coaster. Wooden roller coasters are also identified as the most dangerous roller coasters out there because the wood could not be strong enough to hold up the weight of the coaster, and it breaks. Most of the time the wood breaks from the rain getting the wood wet and making it weak over time. The first metal coasters came around, it was 1959 and the first steel roller coaster was built in Six Flags in Texas in 1966. Steel coasters are safer but still dangerous because they go at higher speeds. They are more fun than wooden ones because they are smooth but still throw you around. However it does not hurt you as much as a wooden does. Some wooden roller coasters don t have seatbelts; they just have a bar that goes over your lap. A lot of the revenue that Banu Ummayyah would take from the subjects was from the Jizyah and they abused this system by continuing to take it from those who accepted Islaam and they also made little effort to spread the Islamic culture amongst the non Muslim subjects or encourage them to become Muslim. As defined by Kotler and Armstrong (2013), a brand is a name, term, sign, symbol, design, or a combination of these that identifies the seller or the product or service from its competitors. With that being said, it really does encompass a broader definition as to what the name only suggests. Stehn PHIL 4350 01 Moral Theory 11 December 2014 Word Count: 2,145 The Self, the Other, and the Possibility of Liberation The primary objective of this research is to illustrate the manner in which the theoretical formulations of Latin American thinker Enrique Dussel have come to revolutionize the way in which ethics and philosophy have been traditionally thought of. In his Г‰tica de la LiberaciГіn en la Edad de la IndustrializaciГіn y de la Exclusion (1998), Dussel seeks to construct a theoretical framework that carters to liberate the victims of the highly globalized world system we are part of today. Dussel attempts to do so by providing an ethical account that directly objects and deconstructs the post modern ontological view of reality that has been abstracted and selfishly imposed upon the world as a universal fact of existence, reflective of everything that is and has ever been. Dussel s ethical discourse can be thought of as being composed of three dimensions corresponding to three aspects of reason: (1) The Material Moment of Ethics Practical Truth, (2) Formal Morality Intersubjective Validity, and (3) Ethical Feasibility the Goodness Claim. (1)The Material Moment of Ethics Practical Truth The Ethics of Liberation, according to Dussel, is an ethics of life. And for this reason, the material principle of this ethics imposes an obligation to produce, reproduce and develop the concrete human life of each ethical subject

Leading him to be often haunted by his past mistakes no matter how long ago they were or how far away he gets away. However basically any character that is followed for any length of time can be seen with guilt and blue. Throughout the novel there are several references to blue kites which haunt Amir because the thing he receives most of his guilt from happens because of a blue kite. The initial event that Amir receives this guilt comes from a cold winter day where his childhood friend and half brother, Hassan, went to receive the final kite. Amir cut down a beautiful blue kite, and when Hassan gets this kite for Amir he gets jumped by some bullies who had previously been chased off by Hassan because he wanted to protect Amir. Once I started skimming through all the bands and artists I know and love, I knew there would be no problem writing this essay. I firmly believe that I was born in the wrong generation of musicbecause I am a hardcore oldies junkie at heart. For this reason, the bands I have selected are as follows: The Beastie Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and The Righteous Brothers. One of the main reasons why I adore the Beastie Boys like many others is because of their care free energetic aura that they mix together with captivating sounds discretely concealing rhetorical puns. What makes them especially unique to me is their transformation from a rowdy party punk band to a mixture of pop, rock, and hip hop. Another improvement to the operational process has been introduced in the form of Buy Online, Pickup in Store program that rolled out nationwide at Macy s stores in 2014. The group suggests that Macy s Inc. should minimize the time for order processing to allow customers place orders online using computer or Macy s online application to allow same day pickup in store, with minimal wait time between placing orders and receiving the orders in stores. Enhanced shopping applications for mobile devices continue to constitute a large focus of Macy s organizational strategy. According to Business Wire (2014), enhanced navigation allows customers to easily and quickly move between features, reach desired product with fewer clicks, check out more quickly, as well as the enhanced ability to manage gift registries (par. 8). At the same time, Macy s should continue to provide adequate Internet access throughout its stores to allow customers use their mobile applications for shopping. Heller (2012) reports that Macy s will offer free WiFi throughout its stores which would allow shoppers to easily view and post reviews in real time, which is something that has shown to spur others purchases (par. 5). Macy s introduced smart fitting rooms in five store locations Century City, San Francisco and

Shenoy visited Berlin in 1960, he witnessed two completely differing parts of the same city (Shenoy). A wall divided Berlin into two separate areas, West Berlin and East Berlin. West Berlin, a capitalist economy, boomed with economic freedom and prosperity. While East Berlin, a command economy, verged on economic collapse. The example of West and East Berlin demonstrates that a capitalist economy, also known as a free market economy, is better than a command economy. To understand the origin of the different economic situations of the same city, it is necessary to look back in history to the end of World War II. Two months after victory in Europe, on July 1945, France, Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union met to determine what to do with conquered Germany. They divided the county into four zones, one zone for each of the victor nations (Gaps). The French, British, and United States zones joined in 1949, becoming ... • 20. Significances Of Total Solar Eclipses A Total Solar Eclipse occurs when the visible portion of our Moon covers the visible portion of our sun, causing it to seem like a white ring with a black center, causing an extremely unique view of our sun and Moon. The Total Solar Eclipse can only be seen from a few points in the world, in the umbral shadow. Most people in the world will only see a partial Solar Eclipse, where the Moonwill only cover a portion of the sun, due to the fact that they re in the penumbral. While not as unique, it s still a rare sight to behold. The reason Solar Eclipses are so rare to begin with is due to the special coincidence of the Moon and sun being the same size to our eyes. While our sun is 400 times the size of our Moon, our sun is also 400 times farther away, causing them to appear the same size in our sky. As previously stated, you can only see a Total Solar Eclipse from an umbral shadow, which is the darkest part of the shadow cast on the Earth. This only happens when the Moon Totally covers the sun, but this is not the only factor. The Moon also has to be close to, or at the point of perigee, the point of the Moon s orbit closest to Earth. The penumbral shadow is only visible when the Moon only partly obscures the Sun s disk, causing a partial Solar Eclipse, but there are still more. There s the Annular Solar Eclipse, which is similar to a Total Solar Eclipse, but the Moon is too small to completely cover the sun, and the Sun s outer edges remain visible to form a ring of fire in the sky. This can only happen when the Moon is near to, or at the point of apogee, the point of the Moon s orbit farthest from Earth, and can only be seen from the Moon s antumbra. The last type of eclipse, Hybrid Solar Eclipses, also known as annular Total eclipses, are the rarest type. This only occurs when a Solar Eclipse changes between a Total Solar Eclipse and an Annular Solar Eclipse along it s path. According to the article What Are Solar Eclipses? on the website timeanddate.com /eclipse/solar eclipse.html For a solar eclipse to take place, the Sun, the Moon, and Earth must be aligned in a perfect or near perfect straight line an alignment astronomers call syzygy. This happens around New Moon every lunar month. There are 2
  • 21. International Criminal Court Argumentative Essay In 1998, the International Criminal Court was created through the Rome Statute. The court was made with the intention of being a justice system that had jurisdiction over international crimes such as war crimes and genocide. Originally, there were 124 states that ratified the International Criminal Court and there were 31 states that signed. Recently, states have decided to leave the International Criminal Courtor retract their signatures. There are many arguments as to why these states are choosing to leave, but, specifically for African states like South Africa, people argue that the International Criminal Court is mainly prosecuting crimes committed in Africa; they believe they are spending an unfair amount of time on the crimes in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the point of view of a realist, states tend to pursue their own interests. Specifically, states that have not ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court can do what they deem necessary whether or not it is in accordance with international law. Therefore, states, such as South Africa, are driven by their own self interest to leave the International Criminal Court. For South Africa, their self interests may include protecting their citizens from what they believe is an unjust court system. African leaders, like the leaders in South Africa, believe that the International Court System is biased and is a tool for Europe to beat up on Africa. (NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE). In particular, realists believe that self interest is driven by the state s pursuit of power. In this case, the countries that are not under the International Criminal Court s jurisdiction do not have to follow the international laws that are defined in the Rome Statute. Therefore, in pursuit of power, the South African government may choose to follow the suit of other powerful countries and leave the International Criminal Court. In contrast to the realist view, constructivism is based on the fact that the system is created by the states, and, therefore, anarchy is
  • 22. Analysis Of The Poem The Scarlett Letter By Nathaniel... The view of nature changed during the course of time periods and throughout my seven reading reflections. I started my reflections during colonial time with The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorn. During the puritan era nature was seen as a sin. The forest where Hester and Dimmesdale reconnected their love was seen as the place where the black man lives . Embracing natureand its carefreeness was seen as a dreadful decision, and this changed over time. On the other hand, my second journal was all about imagery and the beauty of nature. Walt Whitmans I Saw in Louisiana a Live Oak Growing is a comparison of a tree and the narrator s life. The narrator knows he cannot live an independent existence like the oak tree does. He... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a transformation from the previous journal and the peacefulness of Mother Nature that was described. After Crane, the next journal is about a well known poem by Robert Frost Stopping by the woods on a Snowy Evening . Nature in this poem is seen as a place that pulls the narrator away from reality, so much that he considers ending his own life. This poem is full of beautiful New England imagery. The snow blanket covering the forest can be a deadly concealment over the narrator. He does not seem to mind that he is mentally getting lost in nature s exquisiteness. The poem leaves the reader on edge because it does not actually say if the man left this captivating place or if he is literally consumed by its magnificence. This is a modernist poem due to the fact it can be taken in so many ways and leaves us with no answer. Next I reflected on Ernest Hemingway s Big Two Hearted River . Nick, a war veteran, compares himself to numerous aspects of nature, including soot covered grasshoppers. Nick feels a bond with these insects due to the fact they were both hurt and have a layer of hurt over them. Nick had a special spot in the forest before he left for the war. When he came back he felt the same special feeling, which shows natures power and healing. Since returning from combat he feels more respectful of nature and animals, not even wanted to hurt a fish. Even though Nick is delighted
  • 23. Jerome Karabel s The Battle Over Merit Jerome Karabel has explored many areas of the college admissions process and is unhappy with his findings. In his text, The Battle Over Merit , Karabel concludes that the college admissions process has to be updated, so that everyone gets a fair and equal chance to get into these institutions. He includes a substantial argument of how college admissions have evolved and has been initially favoring one social group. This justification shows the concept of privilege and a need for inclusion. Karabel believes that race shouldn t be a factor of change, but socio economic backgrounds should be a way for students to get help and get into these schools, because they need it the most. He also brings up the idea of power and politics and that the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author believes there needs to be change in the admissions process and that includes the very aspect of early admissions. He believes that there needs to be equal opportunity for students to get into these institutions, but early admissions can play a valuable role for this change. If the author desires an admissions process where more students can be able to be admitted in an equal way, why does he condemn and denounce early admissions? Karabel states in this text that early admissions have been notorious for benefiting the privileged and only them. In my perspective, this is false. I believe that everyone has an equal chance of getting in and those who know they are qualified, try to apply early so they do not have to worry about regular admissions and getting their college acceptances late. Karabel still disagrees with this argument. He says, The problem with these programs is twofold: students who use them enjoy an advantage in the admissions process, and students admitted on early decision (though not early action) are obliged to attend the accepting institution and hence cannot compare financial aid offers. Both patterns further advantage the already advantaged (551). This proves the author s limited perspective and truth. He says that students who use them enjoy an advantage (551), which they actually deserve if they want to. The students are benefitted only if they know in full consideration that they will

Inner Conflict in Gaines A Lesson Before Dying Essay Inner Conflict in Gaines A Lesson Before Dying They sentence you to death because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time, with no proof that you had anything at all to do with the crime other than being there when it happened. Yet six months later they come and unlock your cage and tell you, We, us, white folks all, have decided it s time for you to die, because this is the convenient date and time (158). Ernest J. Gaines shows the internal conflicts going through the mind of Mr. Wiggins in his novel A LessonBefore Dying (1933). Mr. Wiggins is struggling through life and can t find his way until he is called upon against his own will to help an innocent man, Jefferson. The help is not that of freeing him at all. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wiggins true character is revealed. In saying, Are you trying to hurt me, Jefferson? Are you trying to make me feel guilty for your being here? You want me to come back here anymore? (84). He is trying to figure out if there is anyway possible to get out of the situation brought to him. Grant believes if he can get Jefferson s consent he will no longer have to do something he doesn t what to do. The only problem is that Grant need Jefferson more than he knows. This is brought out when he starts to talk about leaving the farm in which he grew up. On page 94, the author has a series of quotes of Mr. Wiggins and Vivian that say, I wish I could just run away from this place. Vivian shook her head. You know you can t. Why not? For the same reason you haven t done it yet. I ve wanted to. But you haven t Why? Vivian goes on to say how Grant loves the people in the area more than he hates the place. There is more to it though. Grant is scared he can t make it in the outside world. He saw it when he was educated there. He shows that he needs someone or something to help him move on, and that someone just might be Jefferson. In one quote of Mr. Wiggins, he contradicts everything he has done in the story. I don t know when I m going to die. . . I try to live as well as I can every day and not hurt people. Especially people who love me, people
