Tim Thomas
Directed by Gabriele Muccino, Seven Pounds recounts Tim Thomas journey of redemption as he
transforms the lives of seven strangers. In the 2008 drama film, Thomas carelessly texts while driving,
causing a fatal car accident that took the lives of his fiancée and six others. He says, In seven days,
God created the world. And in seven seconds, I shattered mine. The number seven is a recurring
theme, but after further analyzing the film, its title alludes to The Merchant of Venice. In this
Shakespearean play, when a loan goes unpaid, a moneylender is entitled to a pound of the debtor s
flesh as payment. To atone for the deaths in the tragic car crash, Thomas repays his debts, with his
actual flesh, in the form of seven pounds worth of vital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Critic Ian Freer argues that the movie fails to engage and illuminate and does not emphasize guilt and
redemption. Freer says that the movie is not coherent or satisfying despite its strong moments and
interesting visuals . Though there was no targeted group, the modern ethics aims to make its audience
invest in it emotionally; some were crying by the end. Those who enjoy this movie focus on Tim
Thomas journey of self discipline. However, one negative review brings up how the movie portrays
suicide as a noble solution. Romanticizing suicide on the big screen could increase these numbers;
research shows that portraying those who take their lives as heroic or romantic may encourage
vulnerable people to identify with the victim and even contribute to copycat suicides, the anonymous

Sufisca Influence
Like other monotheistic religions, Sufism had an impact on politics. Throughout recent history, Sufis
have been involved in a number of causes ranging from struggle against colonialism and
authoritarianism, to their participation in the call for democracy in various countries of the African and
Arab peninsulas. Sufis have, in the Muslim and even international community, a detached and wise
image. Their approval on political matters has therefore been sought by many politicians and leaders
of the Muslim world. The following explores the case of the North African country Morocco, in which
its leader Mohammed VI saw the instrumental influence the Sufis have in deterring extremism.
Morocco has been home for a number of Sufi communities since the

Comparison Of The Chrysanthemums And The White Quail
Compare and Contrast The Long Valley
Two characters, Elisa Allen and Mary Teller, struggle with the idea of being accepted into the society
of the 1930s. Women s rights were not fully accepted in the 1930s, and these two characters were set
in the common day view of men and women. In the 1930s, [Society has] assigned to white women
such roles as housewife, secretary, PTA chairman, and schoolteacher. Black women can now be
schoolteachers, too, but they are most prominently assigned to such domestic roles as maid, cook,
waitress, and babysitter (Chisholm 123). These assigned roles have impacted women around the
world, including the two characters in these short stories The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail .
Not being activists in women s rights, these women conformed to society and lived their lives as any
typical housewife in the 1930s. Their passions and choices during this time affected their way of
living and relationships. The two stories reflect similarities of the women s love for gardening and
lonely marriages, but also reflect their different viewpoints on the world they live in.
The two housewives have a passionate love for gardening and bestow their love and appreciation
towards their gardens. In the twentieth century, gardening was advocated as beneficial to one s life and
family. In the New England Quarterly, the journal, Gardening as Women s Culture in Mary E. Wilkins

Bertrand Russel s Enlargement Of Self
Bertrand Russel was born on 18th May 1872. He was a British philosopher, mathematician, historian,
writer, social critic and also political activist. Numerous points of his life, he considered himself a
socialist, and a liberal. He was born in Monmouth shire into one of the most upper class families in
Britain. Russel led the British revolt against idealism, In the early 20th Century. He is one of the
founders of analytic philosophy. He then died on 2nd February, 1970. There are many points that
Bertrand Russel illustrated in the book. The points that he talked about are the enlargement of self, and
he also talks about the value of philosophy.
One point that Bertrand Russel talked about is the enlargement of self. In the book he stated, All
acquisition of knowledge is an enlargement of self, but this enlargement of self is best obtained when
it is not directly sought. Russell s expression Enlargement of self expresses for the person of
understanding, wide interest, self motivation, and reflection. He also used the phrase a share in infinity

Discourses of Conformity in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s...
Throughout the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest written by Ken Kesey, and the poem Advice
to Young Ladies crafted by A.D. Hope, there is evidence to suggest that the discourses represented by
the characters in the novel and poem unveil the ways discourses of conformity underpin the characters
actions, perceptions and motives, as well as inviting and silencing beliefs, attitudes and values. The
author and poet are able to strongly convey their beliefs to the reader from their personal experiences.
The four dominant discourses that both the novel and poem share and represents: conformity,
sexuality and religious. These will be analysed and compared.

Kesey uses several symbolic references that lead the readers to believe that McMurphy symbolised
Christ to the men in the hospital. These extracts examplify how McMurphy develops as a Christ
figure. The novel depicts how the religious discourse positions and privileges the character.
The poem, Advice to Young Ladies , crafted by A.D. Hope, does contain similar dominant discourse
of conformity in Kesey s novel. Although it foregrounds a particular viewpoint similar to the one
presented in Kesey s novel, the representations of religious and sexuality supports the conformity
discourse. Postumia is not conformed to the Vestal Virgin as she is thought to talk too witty for her
age. This can be demonstrated by: Too witty for a young girl, her eyes, her walk. Too lively, her
clothes too smart to be demure. (Line 7 8) The poet positions readers to see Postumia s smartness as a
threat for men and her life being torn from her. A religious discourse can be used to explain this
phenomenon. Hope portrays to the reader is that back then, men were superior and women were made
invisible. Females did not have the right to use intelligence or even the right to express themselves.
Hope portrays that men were superior then women. Females did not have the right to use intelligence

A Performance Analysis Of Tarry Flynn
A Performance Analysis of Tarry Flynn
Tarry felt he wasn t a Christian. His gods were in poetry, in the fields, in living things.
Wayne Jordan s production on Tarry Flynn in The Lir on Monday 20th October, opened with an
enactment of village commotion. Stylised swarms of characters entered and exited from every corner
of the theatre in the round, each concerned with their own activity. As the rhythm, speed and energy
climaxed Tarry Flynn enters and Mary Reilly is knocked off her bike. It later becomes clear that this
symbolises her molestation. From the outset, Jordan displaces Tarry from the rest of the community.
Jordan continues distancing Tarry throughout the play and particularly emphasises Tarry and the youth
of Drumnay s detachment from the church. It is clear that Wayne Jordan s direction of Tarry Flynn
conveys the clash of ideologies between the Catholic Church and the youth of 1930 s rural Ireland.
This essay will go on to analyse three examples in support of this.
In the1930 s, Ireland was known as one of the most sexually repressed countries in the world. Ireland
was a Catholic country, with over 90% of the population declaring themselves to be practising
Catholics. The church was a potent social and political force. It dominated peoples lives and provided
the ideological basis for this sexual repression. The ideology of the church was one of submission and
dedication and was based on the Ten Commandments. The power of the church and their

Analysis Of The Documentary Pirates, Galleons, And...
When watching Pirates, Galleons, and Treasure: Globe Trekker , one certainly does learn something
about pirates and their history. However, that does not mean the documentary is particularly useful. In
fact, the documentary while mostly accurate still has some small discrepancies and does not provide
enough detail for it to be helpful to those actually studying pirates. The documentary is a fun resource
for those who want basic facts, but leaves some facts to assumptions and seems to gloss over some
information. It tends to focuses on myths and interesting stories that may have been true rather than
the truth. More attention is also put on cities rather pirates and when it does focus on the pirates, it is
not done well. It tends to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pirates, Galleons and Treasure also shows pirate stories being romanticised when they speak about the
relationship of Anne Bonny and Calico Jack.
Within the documentary, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack are shown to be lovers and while that may be
true it is still not confirmed. The documentary presents this idea as a fact and even goes on to talk
about Bonny being the mother of his child, leaving out the fact that it is also speculated that Bonny
had slept with her jailors so it is not confirmed that it is his child (Konstam, 2011, p.166). Bonny s
father is said to have had a possible role in her escape (Konstam, 2011, p.185), instead of the claim
that no one knows at all where she could have gone in the documentary. Also in the video, Calico Jack
is said to be responsible for designing the skull and cross bone flag (Pirates, Galleons and Treasure,
2007), when the flag had been first been spotted in 1700 by a pirate named Wyn way before Calico
Jack (The Golden Age, 2016) and the only pirate to be known to fly a true skull and cross bone flag is
Edward England (Konstam, 2011, p.193). Essentially, Pirates, Galleons and Treasures does not seem
to show accurate or unbiased information, or at least towards the pirates they talk about. This
documentary seems to portray pirates in a positive

Abolitionist Movements And Social Reforms
During the eighteenth century, the opposition to slavery prior to forming the United States became
increasingly stronger between the Northern and Southern territories. Prior to the 1830s, antislavery
societies began to emerge from every corner to challenge the slave system and to help combat slavery.
During this time, people had different ideas about how to confront the issue of slavery in the system
and how to establish a freedom of oppression. In the eighteenth century, antislavery political activists
believed the slave system would able to be changed through peaceful political reforms, while others
felt that real change could only be achieved by violence. A radical white abolitionist named John
Brown became a historical figure whose beliefs motivated the violent abolitionist crusade.
In the 1830s, antislavery underwent an important transformation which led to various abolitionist
movements and social reforms. The American Association Organization provided a program which
taught information about the gradual emancipation of slaves and exportation of the free to colonies
outside the U.S. In January 1831, William Loyd Garrison a successful writer played a vital role in the
initiation of the abolitionist crusade after he published the first issue, The Liberator, which brought
awareness of the importance of slavery emancipation. The issue not only helped to give awareness to
the issue of slavery, but it aided in the motivation of the abolitionist movements. The goal of the

Comparing Plato s Republic, The Philosopher And Plato
In Plato s Republic, the philosopher is sitting having a discussion with his fellow peers and friends.
During this conversation each character except Plato offers their opening and reasoning on the
question, what is justice. For the majority of the book Plato outlines almost every aspect of his ideal
city. Within this city Plato has set up many rules in order for the city to remain just. All the way from
mating rituals to who should rule, virtually all factors have been thought of and serves a specific
purpose. One of the most important question that was raised in the book is, who is should be the ruler
of the city? Evidently Plato believes that it is the philosopher who is most fit to rule. He reaches this
conclusion after discussing a variety of factors that put philosophers above the rest, Plato being a
philosopher seems to be the most creditable in making this argument in The Republic. In Plato s book,
Adeimantus attempts to put dispute his claim. Not only him but philosopher and a student of Plato,
Aristotle does the same in his text as well. Aristotle emphasizes the importance of the laws in his
Ethics and Politics. He specifically implies that a ruler who is a philosopher rules by judgment, not
laws, and as a result the ruler will rule for himself and thus becomes a tyrant (Nichomachean Ethics,
V.6, 1134a). Both Plato and Aristotle give compelling arguments as to why they think they are right on
who should rule. Aristotle s claim is accurate, that in the long run

The Case Of Sell V. U.s.
In 2003, the case of Sell v. U.S. raised another important question regarding a patient s right to refuse
treatment. In this case, Dr. Charles Sell, a dentist who had been accused of fraudulently filing
insurance claims for dental work which had never been performed. It became known to the court the
Sell had a long history of mental illness. Sell had been involved in mental health treatment since 1982
when he told other doctors that the gold used for his fillings were contaminated by communists , and
again in 1984 when he called the police to explain that a leopard was boarding a bus outside his office,
and later asked the police to shoot him. He also claimed that public officials were attempting to
murder him and in 1997, he stated that God told me every [Federal Bureau of Investigation] person I
kill, as soul will be saved . (openjurist.org) When the case was heard in court, a bail hearing was held,
and Sell became aggravated. Based on his behavior the judge felt the he was totally out of control it
was also noted that sell used insults, shouting out loud in court, as well as spitting in the judge s face.
For these and other reasons bail was denied, and Sell was detained. While the case was being tried in
court, new charges were introduced, and added into the current charges of fraud. The new charges
included the attempted murder of an FBI agent, and attempting to intimidate a witness for his
prosecution. Sell was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation,

The Financial Market Environment
( Instructor s Resources
Overview
Money and capital markets and their major components are introduced in this chapter. Firms need to
raise capital in order to survive. Financial institutions give firms access to the money they need to
grow. However, greed can drive financial managers and institutions to commit actions that get them
into trouble and even force bankruptcy. These bankruptcies result in limited capital flows to firms, and
both they and the whole economy can suffer. Therefore, financial institutions and markets should be
well regulated. The final section covers a discussion of the impact of taxation on the firm s financial
activities.

The money market is created by a financial relationship between the suppliers and demanders of short
term debt securities maturing in one year or less, such as U.S. Treasury bills, commercial paper, and
negotiable certificates of deposit. The Eurocurrency market is the international equivalent of the U.S.
money market and is used for short term bank time deposits denominated in dollars or other major
currencies.
4. The capital market is a financial relationship created by a number of institutions and arrangements
that allows the suppliers and demanders of long term funds (with maturities greater than one year) to
make transactions. The key securities traded in the capital markets are bonds plus common and
preferred stock.
5. The broker market consists of national and regional securities exchanges. These organizations
provide a location, such as the New York Stock Exchange, to bring together the buyers and sellers of
debt and equity. They create a continuous market for securities, allocate scarce capital, determine and
publicize security prices, and aid in new financing.
In contrast, dealer markets are electronic markets for the buyers and sellers of securities not listed on
the major exchanges. In a dealer market, physical trading locations are replaced by security dealers
who offer to buy or sell securities at stated bid/ask prices. Dealers buy securities from clients and sell
them to other dealers, who in turn sell them to their clients. A majority

Atheism Is Not A Religion, A Worldview Or A Belief System
There have been numerous debates between the religious and atheists, and all seem to end with the
same conclusion: neither side changed at all. Atheism is defined as the rejection of the God
hypothesis. Atheism is not a religion, a worldview or a belief system; they are just denying religious
claims that fail to provide evidence. Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ written in the
bible. They believe god created the earth in seven days and that he will soon send his son, Jesus to
earth to take the faithful to heaven. Deep analyzation of evolution, creationism, and the bible will
surely reveal the truth. Evolution, is basically decent with modification , this applies to microevolution
and macroevolution. (www.evolution.berkeley.edu) Evolution, when on a smaller scale is defined as
microevolution; an example would be the house sparrows. Depending on the location the sparrows
have different characteristics, some are larger and heavier to protect from the cold while others are
lighter to withstand heat. There is so much evidence for microevolution it s almost impossible to deny.
Microevolution is observable because of the short timespan required for it to take place. The
controversy begins when you get into macroevolution which is evolution on a much bigger scale.
Usually referring to a change in species, this cannot be observed because it takes longer than one
lifespan to detect. We are able to observe small modifications; it should be common sense that over

Social Medi A Social And Technological Innovation
Introduction: Social media are the various forms of user generated content and collection of websites
and applications that enable people to interact and share information online. Now a day most of
organizations are working using online services or sites that focus on building and reflecting on social
relations among people. Social networking on websites is a social and technological innovation that
cannot be ignored anymore in the workplace (Awolusi, 2012). Social media has become more popular
as a result of the quick changes in technology. Most popular websites used by employers are known
as: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo Instant Message, Orkut, Skype, etc. An employer can take
advantage of new market by having employees create company related events and make positive

Cognitive Dissonance Theory Of Smoking
Growing up I was never one for exercising let only eating healthy. Bad habits don t die easily and
soon enough as I got older they took their toll on my body. As grew not only vertically but
horizontally instead of changing my habits I only continued them. I merely changed the way I looked
at the problem by embracing the love for my naturally curves instead. Despite not only the public
looking down on hefty women but with the further disapproval of my family that the dissonance
began to weigh more. Things only progressively got worst when I was medically diagnosed with mild
obesity. It was only then that the cognitive dissonance made me begin to change my behavior.
Cognitive dissonance theory explains the contradictions we have with our behaviors and beliefs but it
can also be used to get us to have positive behaviors.
Cognitive dissonance theory was created by Leon Festinger and to better explain his theory he used
the topic of smoking. He showed how the contradiction is so clear and uncomfortable that something
has to give either the use of cigarettes of the belief that smoking will [harm] (Griffin et al., 2015,
p.201). Cognitive dissonance in a nutshell is a contradiction that causes us stress. It is when we act in
ways that go against what we believe and the strong presence we have on the matter the greater the
stress we have. Festinger (2015) describe it the distressing mental state one feels when one finds
themselves doing things that don t fit with what we believe or what the public approves of (p.200). An
extreme example of this is the high one gets from taking drugs but the disapproval the community
might have for it. With dissonance creating a stressful mental state we naturally want to avoid it by
either change our behaviors or our beliefs.
Cognitive dissonance can have either positive effects or negative ones on a person s being. In the
Glatz, Stattin, Kerr study they considered the health and behavior of parents who find their youths
drinking. Generally underage drinking is looked down upon in the community and even in the eyes of
the law but studies have shown that parents reduce control and support in response to youths drinking
(Glatz, Stattin, Kerr, 2012, p. 629). Glatz et al

Dr. Louis Leaky s The Mountain Gorillas
Doctor Dian Fossey was an American primatologist who chose to dedicate two decades of her life
studying the mountain gorillas of the Virunga Mountains in East Africa. She chose to report her study
of the mountain gorillas in the form of a book called Gorillas in the Mist. It portrays the adventure,
struggles, and realizations Dian Fossey experienced in her efforts to understanding the Mountain
Gorillas lifestyle. When on a six week long safari in Africa, Fossey was introduced to Dr. Louis Leaky
who emphasized to her the importance of conducting a long term field study with great apes. Once
returned home Dr. Leaky convinced Fossey to become the gorilla girl and carry out a funded long
term field study of mountain gorillas (Fossey, 1983). Although at first Fossey s goal was simply to
collect data, she was able to gain the trust of the Mountain Gorillas and in turn teach the scientific
community and the general population new information on gorilla s individualism and social structure.
Fossey dismantled previous stereotypes of gorillas being vicious beasts and instead preached of their
playful and gentle personalities. This encouraged primatologist to work towards conservation research
for the great apes along with pushing the field to focus on studying the apes for their own culture, not
just for human evolutionary interests. The means in which Dian Fossey formatted Gorillas in the Mist
is clearly so that it is an easily readable piece that can be understood by a wide

Disadvantages Of A Divergent Problem
Divergent Problem Statement
A divergent problem has been proposed by the South African Provincial Administration (SAPA) to my
firm. After an extensive screening of different transport options, SAPA has decided to build a railway,
80 km long between its two major cities with objectives of relieving the traffic on roadways linking
the two cities and stimulating economic development. A choice between the two types of gauges is to
be made. One is the existing Cape gauge 1,067 mm, the other, a Standard Gauge of 1,435 mm. In
order to solve the problem, pros and cons of each type looking mainly at cost, safety, and performance
which measures the comfortability and maintenance of the track will be addressed starting with Cape
gauges and later, Standard gauges.

Having a uniform gauge gives convenience not only to engineers responsible for construction but also
to passengers as there may be no break of gauge needed, where Ilie (2012) demonstrated that a break
of gauge is seen as an obstacle to the smooth flow of traffic which would consequently add delays,
cost, and inconvenience. Assuming the 80 km distance to have mountainous regions, the Cape gauge
could be the optimal choice in this situation. History research shows that narrow gauges were used in
mountainous regions. These gauges are also a substitute to places where standard gauge trains would
need tunnels or bridges (http://www.gaugemaster.com/narrow gauge.html). Difficulty in finding the

Groupon Case Study
1. Coupons have been around forever, so why has Groupon become successful?
I believe that Groupon has become successful for many different reasons. First of all, Groupon was
the first to transport the traditional Coupon clipping to the online world. This opened many
opportunities. It was something new, exciting to consumers that they hadn´t seen in this way. So
Groupon had a first mover advantage even though they only connected already existing ideas and
technologies in a new way. By being online Groupon could reach many, possibly millions, of people at
once. This was a strong argument when Groupon talked to local merchants. As most of these
merchants did not have an extensive marketing budget and were not necessarily familiar with new ...

Making the offers timesensitive triggers a feeling in consumers that they might miss out on a chance
that will not repeat itself if they don´t act now. Many even bought vouchers that they never redeemed,
just not to miss out on an opportunity. In this sense Groupon is speaking to the risk aversion of the
majority of people. The thrill of seeing how much time is left on a coupon and how many others are
acting as well, appeals to a person´s addictive behavior. We want to repeat the thrill of the bargain
hunt. Groupon then made many moves to foster and expand its initial success. It expanded rapidly into
more cities and later on even more countries. It fostered its connection with social media and the

How Did The Dutch Empire Influence Latin America
The Dutch colonization of Latin America is nothing less than a phenomenon. Against all odds the
Dutch empire rose to colonial prominence in the latter sixteenth century and early seventeenth century
throughout much of Asia, South America and the Caribbean. Coming into their success from a vast
trading network the Dutch had to navigate the murky waters of the countries within the triangle
alliance, consisting of France, England and, Spain. Ultimately, these three countries with their
enormous militaries, naval fleets and, wealth were able to surpass the Dutch as the decades elapsed.
However, despite these great odds the influence the Dutch empire had on Latin America is immense.
One of the many odds the Dutch overcame was the massive protective legislation of the triangle
alliance countries as well as, for at least a short ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The seventy or so years before these laws were enacted (the British navigation acts were first enacted
in 1651) the Dutch began to build a monumental empire focused on sugar and slave trading. The
Dutch West Indies company was chartered in 1621 to give monopoly to the Dutch in the trade market
of the Caribbean, Brazil and, Africa, thus restricting the trade of more powerful countries. According
to Pieter C. Emmer, a Dutch historian at Leiden University in the Netherlands, one major reason the
Dutch were such successful traders and colonizers was because Dutch traders were known all over to
offer lower freight rates and a better array of trade goods at lower prices than any of their competitors ,
thus leading to a stronghold in the region by virtue of trade (Emmer 341). In addition to their powerful
trade markets and shipping capabilities some early victories in the sea led to even more

The Bloody Root Of Titus Andronicus
The Bloody Root of Titus Andronicus: An Argument of Intent and Origin
There are have been many arguments throughout the history of Shakespearean academia regarding the
validity of Shakespeare s authorship to Titus Andronicus, and the critics have not been shy to express
their discontent of its seemingly endless violent montage. As Michael Fentiman and Harold Fuller
point out of what Dr. Samuel Johnson spoke to in 1765,
all the editors and critics agree in supposing this play spurious...for the colour of style is wholly
different from that of the other plays, the barbarity of the spectacles and the general massacre which
are here exhibited can scarcely be tolerable...That Shakespeare wrote any part...I see no reason in
believing (Fentiman). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Virtually, all the central characters killed each other off in a downward spiral of luscious revenge
(Shakespeare). It is striking in its contrast to the likes of Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet or Macbeth to
where Shakespeare dove deep into the emotions and psyche of human life (RedEyesTakeWarning).
Violence and death were not foreign concepts to the people of the Elizabethan era, as medieval life
was chocked full of war, famine, and plague. In the case of entertainment, violence and death were no
strangers as people would flock to see bear baiting, including Queen Elizabeth. (Mabillard).
Allistair Brown claims that we take entertainment out of simulated violence because it is cathartic
(Brown). Brown also argues that, Violence becomes comic because laughter, denying the reality or
seriousness of whatever threatens, is a way of dealing with trauma (Brown). With the world being
consumed with death at every doorstep, what is so far fetched at the notion that Titus Andronicus is an
extremely dark comedy to help a broken soul cope with the grim reality of medieval life? As there is
almost nothing else for society to take away as a benefit from the play (RedEyesTakeWarning), what
else could it be? There are already plenty of examples in literature that deliver morals and lessons
learned from seeking revenge. Why

Price and Gas Station
Preparation
Before going into the meeting with Texoil, I had assessed my BATNA as mentioned by Fisher, Ury,
and Patton (1991, p. 100). Since ads to sell the station had been running for a few months with no
attractive propositions, I was becoming open to the possibility of not selling the station at all and
continuing to run it it became a definite element of my BATNA, although it would mean that my
husband and I would be abandoning our dream plans. BP had already offered $400K for the station
and even though that was a much lower amount than I was expecting, I could simply accept this offer
and leave for my trip this was also part of my BATNA. Of course, my best outcome could be from my
negotiations with Texoil and I was looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
None of this would have been news to the Texoil representative, but it established a common
understanding of the value proposition involved and built some trust. Based on other changes that
Texoil would be expected to make to the operations, such as adding a mini mart and a 3rd operating
shift, I asked for a reasonable price of $590K.
The Texoil representative rejected our initial selling price and claimed that he was not authorized to
spend this much money. It is likely that this was simply a means to negotiate down with us. He made
an offer of $500K for the station, significantly under cutting our suggested price. My spouse and I did
our best to get the representative to improve his offer but were not able to do so. We re iterated over
the reasons/justifications for pricing the station as we had done, even presenting scenarios to show the
undeniable profitability of the enterprise. Although the representative did not move on price, we were
able to extract a concession in terms of employment for both of us at a fairly attractive annual salary.
In the end the Texoil representative met our reservation point and we were able to conclude with a
deal that was favorable to both sides.
In this negotiation, I could see that we covered all the three elements of negotiation moving from
Information phase to Competitive phase and ultimately arriving at the Cooperative phase.

Advantages Of East Asian Development Model
The so called East Asian Development Model was devised as a reaction to sustainably high growth
rates in many East Asian countries in the post World War II period and particularly in the last 40 to 50
years. Generally, there are two competing models of economic developments for developing
countries: On the one hand import substitution industrialisation (ISI) and on the other hand export led
industrialisation (ELI). Many Latin American and African countries favoured the former after the
Second World War and erected trade barriers, introduced tariffs and tried to promote local industries.
In the first couple of decade particularly South Asian (India) and Southeast Asian countries (Indonesia,
Malaysia, Vietnam) also applied this model to a certain extent. A big exception from the very
beginning on, however, was Japan, which was quickly integrated in the world economy thanks to
American support and advocacy and also pursued very active government policies to promote
internationally competitive industries. This resulted in very high average growth rates of 9 % from
1953 to 1965, with the economy gradually slowing to a growth rate of 7 8 % in the 1970s and further
slowing to around 5 % in the 1980s which, it should be noted, was still far above the rich world
average, thus inspiring the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Pros And Cons Of Evaluating NASA
You are the same age as the universe, because matter can never be created or destroyed. NASA will be
fifty eight years old tomorrow, October 1, 2016. Since the start of the NASA program, in October of
1958, we have had many different projects to explore and discover more about what is around our
world. Many criteria that can be used to evaluate NASA, and these criteria are past tragedies, past
successes, theories for travel, type of transportation, funding, popularity, reputation, long term impact,
short term impact, and scientific discoveries. NASA has had three major past tragedies that still linger
over the program today. The first major tragedy for NASA came at a fragile time. During the start of
the Apollo program three astronauts who were scheduled to be sent into orbit on Apollo One died from
a fire. This fire started from an electrical failure in their simulation practice pod as the three men,
Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, Roger B. Chaffee, were inclosed in the pure oxygen chamber.
Then, during the eighties when NASA was sending space shuttles into orbit and no longer going to the
moon, the space shuttle challenger launched from its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

impacts were both negative and positive. With these missions being the first real interactions between
humans and zero gravity space there was many discoveries, most discoveries were very basic. Some
negative short term impacts was the fear of the Russians and communism that was created. This fear
fueled the NASA programs for years. Funding was easy to get since taxes were increased with the
nationwide fear of going to war. More short term impacts that astronauts soon found were the slight
increase in height after being in a zero gravity environment. Other similar short term impacts were

How Stability was Maintained during the Middle-Ages
Introduction
Feudalism a social structure and hierarchy containing mutual duties and obligations. Stability is
maintained as long as the system doesn t change. Physical power resides with the king and nobles
through their knights. The Church s power resides through controlling people s beliefs. Serfs were tied
to the land. The Black Death, however, brought about such massive changes in demographics /
population that the demand for a limited labor source (the peasants) meant that this social group at the
bottom of the social ladder grew in importance (as seen in the 1381 Peasants revolt) that drastic
change and the end of the feudal structure was inevitable.
Paragraph 1
The castles played an important role in the middle ages. The castles structure was built to fortify and
maintain control over an area. The architecture that was put into building the castles, was designed to
hold back any enemies with heavy weaponry and stronger armies then them. Source 1 states The
earliest medieval castles were built with mottes and baileys. Mottes were built with wooden walls
around the edges, in the process formed a ring work fort. This sort of protective structure was used in
the late twelfth century. The Motte was one of the most defensible areas, while the bailey was one of
the main places where the battle took place.

being strong enough to drive growth, increased competition within the doll category, along with lower
effectiveness of in store, commercial, and promotional activities (Mattel).
In 1998 Mattel acquired the well established company American Girl Dolls. American Girl bucked
retail trends, expanding its brick and mortar footprint while still achieving incredibly high online sales

revenue in a given market and bringing in between 50 60% new customers to the brand (Mattel Toys).

HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
University of Aberdeen is a public research focused University located in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is an
ancient university founded in 1945. The university was formed as a result of a merger between two
great colleges, King s College and Marischal College in 1860. There were rival colleges that came
together to form a stronger alliance as a result of the strong competition between them. It is Scotland
3rd oldest and U.K 5th oldest University.

Incarceration In A Tale Of Two Cities
At the start of the novel, Manette has been recently released from the Bastille after a long
imprisonment. He is briefly given shelter in Paris by his former servant Ernest Defarge (who will
subsequently be a leader of the storming of the Bastille) and is then reunited with his daughter Lucie.
He does nothing but make shoes, a pastime that he adopted to distract himself from the tortures of
prison. He is clearly not in his right mind during this time; he speaks only when necessary, and has
become so used to being a prisoner that he can hardly bear light or freedom. As he overcomes his past
as a prisoner, due to his daughter s love and devotion to him, however, he resumes his occupation as a

As Jarvis Lorry makes his way toward France to recover Manette, the narrator reflects that every
human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. For much of the
novel, the cause of Manette s incarceration remains a mystery both to the other characters and to the
reader. Even when the story concerning the evil Marquis St. Evrémonde comes to light, the conditions
of Manette s imprisonment remain hidden. Though the reader never learns exactly how Manette
suffered, his relapses into trembling sessions of shoemaking evidence the depth of his misery. Like
Carton, Manette over the course of the novel, undergoes drastic change. He is transformed from an
insensate prisoner who mindlessly cobbles shoes into a man of distinction. The contemporary reader
tends to understand human individuals not as fixed entities but rather as impressionable and reactive
beings, affected and influenced by their surroundings and by the people with whom they interact. In
Dickens age, however, this notion was rather revolutionary. Manette s transformation testifies to the
tremendous impact of relationships and experience on life. The strength that he displays while
dedicating himself to rescuing Darnay seems to confirm the lesson that Carton learns by the end of the
novel that not only does

IV. OPTIMIZING AVAILABILITY PROVISIONING IN NFV
Even though the efficiency is greatly improved, our framework is still impractical in the sense that the
process can be further prolonged with 1) a even higher availability requirement, which is normal in a
carrier class network [18] (usually requires an availability of 99.999% or 99.9999% (5 9s or 6 9s)); 2)
more requests; and 3) longer contract period duration. The root cause the process takes such a long
time is it depends on the strategy we use to provision backups and how many backups are needed. In
other words, if we can accurately estimate the least possible number of backups needed without
running the trial and error process, a great amount of running time can be saved. The process ... Show

Variation Of Alleles
Genetic variation of alleles is evident through physical attributes of humans and can be attributed to
the specific sequence of nucleotides in DNA. Gregor Mendel experimented with plant breeding in
order to determine that the inheritance of different traits is dependent upon the differences in alleles,
or genes. Two loci that can measure the genetic variation in human populations are the LCT locus and
the TAS2R38 locus (Leicht McAllister, 2017). The LCT locus is located on chromosome 2, and
encodes for the enzyme lactase that breaks down lactose into its monomers to aid digestion of dairy in
the small intestine (Leicht McAllister, 2017). The two potential alleles that LCT has are C and T,
which can form three potential genotypes in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We were then using the Hardy Weinberg Principle to calculate the observed and expected values of
genotype frequencies within the class and compare the results using the Chi Square goodness of fit
test (Leicht McAllister, 2017). Demonstrated by the Hardy Weinberg Principle, that without any
evolutionary forces, the allele and genotype frequencies of sexual populations will remain constant
between generations (Sadava, 2011). The Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium is met be a population under
five specific conditions: no genetic mutation, random mating between individuals (no sexual
selection), infinite population size (no genetic drift, or any chance of variation with allele frequencies),
no gene flow (migration of new individuals into or out of the population), and no natural selection (all
genotypes contain the same relative fitness for survival and reproduction). If any of these conditions
are not met, the population is not in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium and evolution is occurring. The
expected frequencies within a population are determined by two equations: p + q = 1 for allele
frequencies, and p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1 for genotype frequencies (Sadava, 2011). After using the Hardy
Weinberg Principle, we used the Chi Square goodness of fit test to compare the expected and observed
frequencies of the LCT and TAS2R38 loci, we

Air Pollution And Bone Pollution
It is not only the lungs that can be damaged by air pollution. Even bones are in danger for people
whose homes are near polluted areas, a new research, published in Lancet Planetary Health, from
Columbia University, said.
After studying the records of more than 9 million people, researchers at the University discovered that
slight increases in airborne particles from vehicle emissions are linked to lower bone density. Pollution
likely affects the production of key hormones and bone minerals that lead to osteoporosis, The
Telegraph reported.
Parallel studies
Dr. Andrea Baccarelli, from the University s Mailman School of Public Health, warned that exposure
to high levels of fine particulate matter in the air could speed up the loss of bone density and boost the
risk of bone fracture. Similar to the toxic substance found in cigarette smoke, air pollution could cause
inflammation and oxidative stress and lead to bone loss, The Malay Mail Online reported. The
researchers made two parallel studies. The first study looked into hospital admissions between 2003
and 2010 for fractures related to osteoporosis in patients older than 65 years old. Their finding was

Design And Analysis Of Control System Structures For...
This thesis deals with the design and analysis of control system structures for electric drives equipped
with permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) in automotive application. With the increasing
popularity of multi level inverters, the room for improvement of the performance of voltage source
inverters has continuously been tested for various applications. The rapid development of high
switching frequency power electronics in the past decade leads towards wider application of voltage
source inverters in AC power generation. Therefore, this prompts the need for a modulation technique
with less total harmonic distortion, fewer switching losses, and wider linear modulation range. The
present thesis highlights the comparison of the conventional two level inverter and the three level
diode clamped inverters for the application in automotive industry. The thesis highlights the DC link
balancing control which is the most commonly faced problem in case of a three level diode clamped
inverter, with no additional circuit. Modifications of the modulation techniques for the realization of
the DC link balancing control have been proposed. Comparison of the total harmonic distortion of the
line to line voltages at the outputs of the two and three level inverters has been presented for PWM,
SVPWM CB SVPWM techniques. The thesis also deals with the control of the Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Motor drive using Field Oriented Control technique. A PMSM drive system based on

for determining the center of mass of each state is split up into five steps. The first two, file conversion
and sorting, gave a huge amount of raw data, and then condensed it into a workable form. The third
step converted latitude and longitude coordinates into kilometers. The fourth step took the trapezoids
formed by the previous steps and calculated their moments with respect to the x and y axis s. Finally,
the conversions were reversed to give the center of mass. All of the states were downloaded as
shapefiles from the National Boundary Dataset maintained by the USGS. Then then the .shp files were
converted to .kmz with ArcMap10.4, and then converted to .kml with Google Earth. Then the
approximately 30,000 latitude and longitude coordinates for each state were saved as a .txt file and
imported into Excel. The shapefiles gave a coordinate approximately every 400 meters along straight
edges of states, and approximately every 200 meters along rivers and other curved features, and went
out to the eighth decimal place. The territorial seas of costal states which extend three nautical miles
out from the low water mark, and the state boundaries that extend into the Great Lakes and other
bodies of water were included in the laminar sheet. Small islands such as the Florida Keys and those
off the coast of California were assumed to

How Did Montag Change In Fahrenheit 451
When a society abandons the past, the future becomes more unfamiliar than ever before. This is a
concept present throughout Ray Bradbury s novel Fahrenheit 451, in which the society has abandoned
reading in its entirety. Guy Montag, the main protagonist in the story, is a fireman. The word fireman
itself has lost its historical meaning in the story and has changed from men who put out fires to men
who start fires and burn books. The reason these men burn books is because they were outlawed after
people stopped reading them, and this is done in order to maintain social equality. With the
abandonment of reading and intellectualism, society has changed and, arguably not for the better. The
main character, Montag, slowly becomes more aware of the society he lives in through his new
neighbor Clarisse McClellan, an old lady with a collection of books, and a known intellectual named
Professor Faber. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shortly after Clarisse moves in down the street from the main protagonist, she meets Montag. Even
though she has learned that he is a fireman, she is willing to talk to him anyway, saying, You know, I
m not afraid of you at all (Bradbury 11). So she talks to him, and he listens. He listens and learns from
her and learns what life can be from her. Clarisse gives Montag thoughts and ideas he has never had
before and this sparks a strive for knowledge in Montag. Montag begins to ask questions, similar to
how Clarisse does. The fireman wishes to learn more about his position in society and begins to
slowly understand what is happening around him. The reader can tell the progression of awareness in
Montag and there is an evident distinction of change throughout the story. Clarisse sparked ideas in
Montag that would, most likely, not have been present without her influence, and because of this
Montag is greatly impressed by Clarisse and this is why she had such a large impact on

Examples Of Evil In Macbeth
The definition of evil is profound immorality, wickedness, and depravity, especially when regarded as
a supernatural force. The readers see these qualities in the main character, Macbeth. This play, written
by William Shakespeare, starts off by portraying Macbeth as a hero who helped to win the battle for
Scotland; this is the first impression of Macbeth. Macbeth is not the only character that readers see
profound immorality in; evil is seen in the people around Macbeth as he makes his journey to the
throne.
First, evil is shown in Macbeth when he expresses that he is willing to do anything to obtain complete
power. After the war is won, Macbeth is told by the witches that he will be promoted to Thane of
Cawdor, and even has the opportunity to be king of Scotland. Macbeth is indeed promoted to Thane of
Cawdor and immediately gets anxious to be king, and right now. Macbeth is willing to kill the current
King Duncan to earn his throne. This evil deed is the first time we see wickedness in Macbeth.
Macbeth says, Stars hide your fires! Let not see my black and deep desires (I. iv. 52 53). Macbeth is
now admitting to his own evil thoughts. Macbeth s killing streak is not over and he will not ... Show

The second time readers see evil in Macbeth, is when Lady Macbeth tells her husband that he is not a
real man when he is questioning if killing the king is what he needs to do. Yet do I fear thy nature; It is
too full o th milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great, Art not without
ambition, but without the illness should attend it (I. v. 2 7). Lady Macbeth is now as greedy as her
husband for the power. She is the one who convinces him to kill his first victim. As the show goes on,
her less strength and confidence about their reign seems to hinder. Lady Macbeth ends up committing
suicide because she cannot handle the guilt of all the dispare she and her husband have placed on

In the 2008 drama film, Thomas carelessly texts while driving, causing a fatal car accident that took the lives of his fiancée and six others. He says, In seven days, God created the world. And in seven seconds, I shattered mine. The number seven is a recurring theme, but after further analyzing the film, its title alludes to The Merchant of Venice. In this Shakespearean play, when a loan goes unpaid, a moneylender is entitled to a pound of the debtor s flesh as payment. In the 1930s, [Society has] assigned to white women such roles as housewife, secretary, PTA chairman, and schoolteacher. These assigned roles have impacted women around the world, including the two characters in these short stories The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail . Not being activists in women s rights, these women conformed to society and lived their lives as any typical housewife in the 1930s. Their passions and choices during this time affected their way of living and relationships. The two stories reflect similarities of the women s love for gardening and lonely marriages, but also reflect their different viewpoints on the world they live in. Wayne Jordan s production on Tarry Flynn in The Lir on Monday 20th October, opened with an enactment of village commotion. Stylised swarms of characters entered and exited from every corner of the theatre in the round, each concerned with their own activity. As the rhythm, speed and energy climaxed Tarry Flynn enters and Mary Reilly is knocked off her bike. It later becomes clear that this symbolises her molestation. From the outset, Jordan displaces Tarry from the rest of the community. Jordan continues distancing Tarry throughout the play and particularly emphasises Tarry and the youth of Drumnay s detachment from the church. It is clear that Wayne Jordan s direction of Tarry Flynn conveys the clash of ideologies between the Catholic Church and the youth of 1930 s rural Ireland. This essay will go on to analyse three examples in support of this. In the1930 s, Ireland was known as one of the most sexually repressed countries in the world. Ireland was a Catholic country, with over 90% of the population declaring themselves to be practising Catholics. The church was a potent social and political force. It dominated peoples lives and provided the ideological basis for this sexual repression. The ideology of the church was one of submission and dedication and was based on the Ten Commandments. Abolitionist Movements And Social Reforms During the eighteenth century, the opposition to slavery prior to forming the United States became increasingly stronger between the Northern and Southern territories. Prior to the 1830s, antislavery societies began to emerge from every corner to challenge the slave system and to help combat slavery. During this time, people had different ideas about how to confront the issue of slavery in the system and how to establish a freedom of oppression. In the eighteenth century, antislavery political activists believed the slave system would able to be changed through peaceful political reforms, while others felt that real change could only be achieved by violence. A radical white abolitionist named John Brown became a historical figure whose beliefs motivated the violent abolitionist crusade. In the 1830s, antislavery underwent an important transformation which led to various abolitionist movements and social reforms. The American Association Organization provided a program which taught information about the gradual emancipation of slaves and exportation of the free to colonies outside the U.S. In January 1831, William Loyd Garrison a successful writer played a vital role in the initiation of the abolitionist crusade after he published the first issue, The Liberator, which brought awareness of the importance of slavery emancipation. During this conversation each character except Plato offers their opening and reasoning on the question, what is justice. For the majority of the book Plato outlines almost every aspect of his ideal city. Within this city Plato has set up many rules in order for the city to remain just. All the way from mating rituals to who should rule, virtually all factors have been thought of and serves a specific purpose. One of the most important question that was raised in the book is, who is should be the ruler of the city? Evidently Plato believes that it is the philosopher who is most fit to rule. He reaches this conclusion after discussing a variety of factors that put philosophers above the rest, Plato being a philosopher seems to be the most creditable in making this argument in The Republic. In Plato s book, Adeimantus attempts to put dispute his claim. Not only him but philosopher and a student of Plato, Aristotle does the same in his text as well. Aristotle emphasizes the importance of the laws in his Ethics and Politics. He specifically implies that a ruler who is a philosopher rules by judgment, not laws, and as a result the ruler will rule for himself and thus becomes a tyrant (Nichomachean Ethics, V.6, 1134a). Atheism is defined as the rejection of the God hypothesis. Atheism is not a religion, a worldview or a belief system; they are just denying religious claims that fail to provide evidence. Christians follow the teachings of Jesus Christ written in the bible. They believe god created the earth in seven days and that he will soon send his son, Jesus to earth to take the faithful to heaven. • 17. Cognitive Dissonance Theory Of Smoking Growing up I was never one for exercising let only eating healthy. Bad habits don t die easily and soon enough as I got older they took their toll on my body. As grew not only vertically but horizontally instead of changing my habits I only continued them. I merely changed the way I looked at the problem by embracing the love for my naturally curves instead. Despite not only the public looking down on hefty women but with the further disapproval of my family that the dissonance began to weigh more. Things only progressively got worst when I was medically diagnosed with mild obesity. It was only then that the cognitive dissonance made me begin to change my behavior. Cognitive dissonance theory explains the contradictions we have with our behaviors and beliefs but it can also be used to get us to have positive behaviors. Cognitive dissonance theory was created by Leon Festinger and to better explain his theory he used the topic of smoking. He showed how the contradiction is so clear and uncomfortable that something has to give either the use of cigarettes of the belief that smoking will [harm] (Griffin et al., 2015, p.201). Cognitive dissonance in a nutshell is a contradiction that causes us stress. It is when we act in ways that go against what we believe and the strong presence we have on the matter the greater the stress we have. Festinger (2015) describe it the distressing mental state one feels when one finds themselves doing things that don t fit with what we believe or what the public approves of (p.200). An extreme example of this is the high one gets from taking drugs but the disapproval the community might have for it. With dissonance creating a stressful mental state we naturally want to avoid it by either change our behaviors or our beliefs. Cognitive dissonance can have either positive effects or negative ones on a person s being. In the Glatz, Stattin, Kerr study they considered the health and behavior of parents who find their youths drinking. Generally underage drinking is looked down upon in the community and even in the eyes of the law but studies have shown that parents reduce control and support in response to youths drinking (Glatz, Stattin, Kerr, 2012, p. 629). Emmer, a Dutch historian at Leiden University in the Netherlands, one major reason the Dutch were such successful traders and colonizers was because Dutch traders were known all over to offer lower freight rates and a better array of trade goods at lower prices than any of their competitors , thus leading to a stronghold in the region by virtue of trade (Emmer 341). In addition to their powerful trade markets and shipping capabilities some early victories in the sea led to even more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Bloody Root Of Titus Andronicus The Bloody Root of Titus Andronicus: An Argument of Intent and Origin There are have been many arguments throughout the history of Shakespearean academia regarding the validity of Shakespeare s authorship to Titus Andronicus, and the critics have not been shy to express their discontent of its seemingly endless violent montage. As Michael Fentiman and Harold Fuller point out of what Dr. Samuel Johnson spoke to in 1765, all the editors and critics agree in supposing this play spurious...for the colour of style is wholly different from that of the other plays, the barbarity of the spectacles and the general massacre which are here exhibited can scarcely be tolerable...That Shakespeare wrote any part...I see no reason in believing (Fentiman). ... It is striking in its contrast to the likes of Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet or Macbeth to where Shakespeare dove deep into the emotions and psyche of human life (RedEyesTakeWarning). Violence and death were not foreign concepts to the people of the Elizabethan era, as medieval life was chocked full of war, famine, and plague. In the case of entertainment, violence and death were no strangers as people would flock to see bear baiting, including Queen Elizabeth. (Mabillard). Allistair Brown claims that we take entertainment out of simulated violence because it is cathartic (Brown). Brown also argues that, Violence becomes comic because laughter, denying the reality or seriousness of whatever threatens, is a way of dealing with trauma (Brown). With the world being consumed with death at every doorstep, what is so far fetched at the notion that Titus Andronicus is an extremely dark comedy to help a broken soul cope with the grim reality of medieval life? As there is almost nothing else for society to take away as a benefit from the play (RedEyesTakeWarning), what else could it be? Since ads to sell the station had been running for a few months with no attractive propositions, I was becoming open to the possibility of not selling the station at all and continuing to run it it became a definite element of my BATNA, although it would mean that my husband and I would be abandoning our dream plans. BP had already offered $400K for the station and even though that was a much lower amount than I was expecting, I could simply accept this offer and leave for my trip this was also part of my BATNA. None of this would have been news to the Texoil representative, but it established a common understanding of the value proposition involved and built some trust. Based on other changes that Texoil would be expected to make to the operations, such as adding a mini mart and a 3rd operating shift, I asked for a reasonable price of $590K. The Texoil representative rejected our initial selling price and claimed that he was not authorized to spend this much money. It is likely that this was simply a means to negotiate down with us. He made an offer of $500K for the station, significantly under cutting our suggested price. My spouse and I did our best to get the representative to improve his offer but were not able to do so. We re iterated over the reasons/justifications for pricing the station as we had done, even presenting scenarios to show the undeniable profitability of the enterprise. Although the representative did not move on price, we were able to extract a concession in terms of employment for both of us at a fairly attractive annual salary. In the end the Texoil representative met our reservation point and we were able to conclude with a deal that was favorable to both sides. In this negotiation, I could see that we covered all the three elements of negotiation moving from Information phase to Competitive phase and ultimately arriving at the Cooperative phase. • 27. Advantages Of East Asian Development Model The so called East Asian Development Model was devised as a reaction to sustainably high growth rates in many East Asian countries in the post World War II period and particularly in the last 40 to 50 years. Generally, there are two competing models of economic developments for developing countries: On the one hand import substitution industrialisation (ISI) and on the other hand export led industrialisation (ELI). Many Latin American and African countries favoured the former after the Second World War and erected trade barriers, introduced tariffs and tried to promote local industries. In the first couple of decade particularly South Asian (India) and Southeast Asian countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam) also applied this model to a certain extent. A big exception from the very beginning on, however, was Japan, which was quickly integrated in the world economy thanks to American support and advocacy and also pursued very active government policies to promote internationally competitive industries. This resulted in very high average growth rates of 9 % from 1953 to 1965, with the economy gradually slowing to a growth rate of 7 8 % in the 1970s and further slowing to around 5 % in the 1980s which, it should be noted, was still far above the rich world average, thus inspiring the ... Since the start of the NASA program, in October of 1958, we have had many different projects to explore and discover more about what is around our world. Many criteria that can be used to evaluate NASA, and these criteria are past tragedies, past successes, theories for travel, type of transportation, funding, popularity, reputation, long term impact, short term impact, and scientific discoveries. NASA has had three major past tragedies that still linger over the program today. The first major tragedy for NASA came at a fragile time. During the start of the Apollo program three astronauts who were scheduled to be sent into orbit on Apollo One died from a fire. This fire started from an electrical failure in their simulation practice pod as the three men, Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, Roger B. Chaffee, were inclosed in the pure oxygen chamber. Stability is maintained as long as the system doesn t change. Physical power resides with the king and nobles through their knights. The Church s power resides through controlling people s beliefs. Serfs were tied to the land. The Black Death, however, brought about such massive changes in demographics / population that the demand for a limited labor source (the peasants) meant that this social group at the bottom of the social ladder grew in importance (as seen in the 1381 Peasants revolt) that drastic change and the end of the feudal structure was inevitable. Paragraph 1 The castles played an important role in the middle ages. The castles structure was built to fortify and maintain control over an area. The architecture that was put into building the castles, was designed to hold back any enemies with heavy weaponry and stronger armies then them. Source 1 states The earliest medieval castles were built with mottes and baileys. Mottes were built with wooden walls around the edges, in the process formed a ring work fort. This sort of protective structure was used in the late twelfth century. The Motte was one of the most defensible areas, while the bailey was one of the main places where the battle took place. He does nothing but make shoes, a pastime that he adopted to distract himself from the tortures of prison. He is clearly not in his right mind during this time; he speaks only when necessary, and has become so used to being a prisoner that he can hardly bear light or freedom. For much of the novel, the cause of Manette s incarceration remains a mystery both to the other characters and to the reader. Even when the story concerning the evil Marquis St. Evrémonde comes to light, the conditions of Manette s imprisonment remain hidden. Though the reader never learns exactly how Manette suffered, his relapses into trembling sessions of shoemaking evidence the depth of his misery. Like Carton, Manette over the course of the novel, undergoes drastic change. He is transformed from an insensate prisoner who mindlessly cobbles shoes into a man of distinction. The contemporary reader tends to understand human individuals not as fixed entities but rather as impressionable and reactive beings, affected and influenced by their surroundings and by the people with whom they interact. In Dickens age, however, this notion was rather revolutionary. Manette s transformation testifies to the tremendous impact of relationships and experience on life. OPTIMIZING AVAILABILITY PROVISIONING IN NFV Even though the efficiency is greatly improved, our framework is still impractical in the sense that the process can be further prolonged with 1) a even higher availability requirement, which is normal in a carrier class network [18] (usually requires an availability of 99.999% or 99.9999% (5 9s or 6 9s)); 2) more requests; and 3) longer contract period duration. The root cause the process takes such a long time is it depends on the strategy we use to provision backups and how many backups are needed. In other words, if we can accurately estimate the least possible number of backups needed without running the trial and error process, a great amount of running time can be saved. The process ... Gregor Mendel experimented with plant breeding in order to determine that the inheritance of different traits is dependent upon the differences in alleles, or genes. Two loci that can measure the genetic variation in human populations are the LCT locus and the TAS2R38 locus (Leicht McAllister, 2017). The LCT locus is located on chromosome 2, and encodes for the enzyme lactase that breaks down lactose into its monomers to aid digestion of dairy in the small intestine (Leicht McAllister, 2017). The Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium is met be a population under five specific conditions: no genetic mutation, random mating between individuals (no sexual selection), infinite population size (no genetic drift, or any chance of variation with allele frequencies), no gene flow (migration of new individuals into or out of the population), and no natural selection (all genotypes contain the same relative fitness for survival and reproduction). If any of these conditions are not met, the population is not in Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium and evolution is occurring. Even bones are in danger for people whose homes are near polluted areas, a new research, published in Lancet Planetary Health, from Columbia University, said. After studying the records of more than 9 million people, researchers at the University discovered that slight increases in airborne particles from vehicle emissions are linked to lower bone density. Pollution likely affects the production of key hormones and bone minerals that lead to osteoporosis, The Telegraph reported. Parallel studies Dr. Andrea Baccarelli, from the University s Mailman School of Public Health, warned that exposure to high levels of fine particulate matter in the air could speed up the loss of bone density and boost the risk of bone fracture. Similar to the toxic substance found in cigarette smoke, air pollution could cause inflammation and oxidative stress and lead to bone loss, The Malay Mail Online reported. This thesis deals with the design and analysis of control system structures for electric drives equipped with permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) in automotive application. With the increasing popularity of multi level inverters, the room for improvement of the performance of voltage source inverters has continuously been tested for various applications. The rapid development of high switching frequency power electronics in the past decade leads towards wider application of voltage source inverters in AC power generation. Therefore, this prompts the need for a modulation technique with less total harmonic distortion, fewer switching losses, and wider linear modulation range. The present thesis highlights the comparison of the conventional two level inverter and the three level diode clamped inverters for the application in automotive industry. The thesis highlights the DC link balancing control which is the most commonly faced problem in case of a three level diode clamped inverter, with no additional circuit. Modifications of the modulation techniques for the realization of the DC link balancing control have been proposed. • 44. Geographic Center Of The United States GEOGRAPHIC CENTER OF THE UNITED STATES MATH 166 Ian Gilley, Kelvin Brandl, Kayla Muehlhauser, Nathan Koehler, Justin Ebnet, Kylie Bentz Our method for determining the center of mass of each state is split up into five steps. The first two, file conversion and sorting, gave a huge amount of raw data, and then condensed it into a workable form. The third step converted latitude and longitude coordinates into kilometers. The fourth step took the trapezoids formed by the previous steps and calculated their moments with respect to the x and y axis s. Finally, the conversions were reversed to give the center of mass. All of the states were downloaded as shapefiles from the National Boundary Dataset maintained by the USGS. Then then the .shp files were converted to .kmz with ArcMap10.4, and then converted to .kml with Google Earth. Then the approximately 30,000 latitude and longitude coordinates for each state were saved as a .txt file and imported into Excel. The shapefiles gave a coordinate approximately every 400 meters along straight edges of states, and approximately every 200 meters along rivers and other curved features, and went out to the eighth decimal place. The territorial seas of costal states which extend three nautical miles out from the low water mark, and the state boundaries that extend into the Great Lakes and other bodies of water were included in the laminar sheet. Small islands such as the Florida Keys and those off the coast of California were assumed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. How Did Montag Change In Fahrenheit 451 When a society abandons the past, the future becomes more unfamiliar than ever before. This is a concept present throughout Ray Bradbury s novel Fahrenheit 451, in which the society has abandoned reading in its entirety. Guy Montag, the main protagonist in the story, is a fireman. The word fireman itself has lost its historical meaning in the story and has changed from men who put out fires to men who start fires and burn books. The reason these men burn books is because they were outlawed after people stopped reading them, and this is done in order to maintain social equality. With the abandonment of reading and intellectualism, society has changed and, arguably not for the better. The main character, Montag, slowly becomes more aware of the society he lives in through his new neighbor Clarisse McClellan, an old lady with a collection of books, and a known intellectual named Professor Faber. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shortly after Clarisse moves in down the street from the main protagonist, she meets Montag. Even though she has learned that he is a fireman, she is willing to talk to him anyway, saying, You know, I m not afraid of you at all (Bradbury 11). So she talks to him, and he listens. He listens and learns from her and learns what life can be from her. Clarisse gives Montag thoughts and ideas he has never had before and this sparks a strive for knowledge in Montag. Montag begins to ask questions, similar to how Clarisse does. The fireman wishes to learn more about his position in society and begins to slowly understand what is happening around him. The reader can tell the progression of awareness in Montag and there is an evident distinction of change throughout the story. Clarisse sparked ideas in Montag that would, most likely, not have been present without her influence, and because of this Montag is greatly impressed by Clarisse and this is why she had such a large impact on ... • 46. Examples Of Evil In Macbeth The definition of evil is profound immorality, wickedness, and depravity, especially when regarded as a supernatural force. The readers see these qualities in the main character, Macbeth. This play, written by William Shakespeare, starts off by portraying Macbeth as a hero who helped to win the battle for Scotland; this is the first impression of Macbeth. Macbeth is not the only character that readers see profound immorality in; evil is seen in the people around Macbeth as he makes his journey to the throne. First, evil is shown in Macbeth when he expresses that he is willing to do anything to obtain complete power. After the war is won, Macbeth is told by the witches that he will be promoted to Thane of Cawdor, and even has the opportunity to be king of Scotland. Macbeth is indeed promoted to Thane of Cawdor and immediately gets anxious to be king, and right now. Macbeth is willing to kill the current King Duncan to earn his throne. This evil deed is the first time we see wickedness in Macbeth. Macbeth says, Stars hide your fires! Let not see my black and deep desires (I. iv. 52 53). Macbeth is now admitting to his own evil thoughts. Macbeth s killing streak is not over and he will not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second time readers see evil in Macbeth, is when Lady Macbeth tells her husband that he is not a real man when he is questioning if killing the king is what he needs to do. Yet do I fear thy nature; It is too full o th milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great, Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it (I. v. 2 7). Lady Macbeth is now as greedy as her husband for the power. She is the one who convinces him to kill his first victim. As the show goes on, her less strength and confidence about their reign seems to hinder.
