Essay on Why Gladstone Failed to Pacify Ireland
Why Gladstone Failed to Pacify Ireland
Gladstone s adoption of interest in Irish affairs in 1867 puzzled many of his contemporaries and has
continued to puzzle historians. Up until 1867 Gladstone had shown very little sympathy towards the
Irish, all his life he had held them in contempt, visiting only once. His mission to pacify Ireland was
surprising and his motives suspect. Many historians believe that Ireland was a cause through which
Gladstone was to unify his divided party. Others have said that it was in reaction to the agrarian
violence raging through Ireland, it was clear that something had to be done. Gladstone declared that it
was his high hope and ardent desire that Ireland would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was hoped that this would reduce social unrest provoked by religious discrimination. Gladstone s
plans were courageous; he had no precedent to go by and the task presented immense difficulties. The
Act dissolved the Irish Church s power, it meant that it could no longer expect tithes from Catholics
and C of I dissenters although this did not mean that the Irish were any better off; the tithes still had to
be paid but were now paid to the state rather than the Irish Church. Despite the fact that the Act solved
once and for all the major religious grievance of the Irish Roman Catholics [1]in practice it made very
little difference the lives of most Irishmen. It did not by any means solve religious differences,
Protestants still owned much of the land, and they still dominated the resented landlord class. The
consequences of the act were more symbolic than practical, it did very little to pacify Ireland.
Most agreed that the key to Ireland s problems lay in the land question. This question of questions for
Ireland (John Devoy) proved much more difficult than church reform due to the complexities of the
Irish Land System and the wider range of interests involved. Lord Kimberley wrote no measures of
any kind can satisfy the Irish: the utmost they can do is to lay the basis for a gradual improvement .
Kimberley s prognostication was very close to the truth. Neither Act actually

Family Counseling By Dr. Berger
The Jarrett family was referred to family counseling by Dr. Berger, to address the family s breakdown
in communication brought on by grief, after losing the oldest son in a tragic accident and the events
that followed. The Jarrett s are an upper middle class white family that live in Forest Hills, Illinois.
Calvin, the father, age 41, is an attorney in a well established law firm in Chicago. He has been acting
as the mediator between Beth and Conrad. He was emotional about the loss of his son, Buck, and is
concerned about Conrad s mental health after his suicide attempt.
Beth, the mother, age 40, seems to be the leader although, she is a stay at home mother. Beth is
socially active and is adamant about keeping up appearances. ... Show more content on

Throughout the marriage Beth has decreed who Calvin will be as a husband and father; on the day of
Buck s funeral she criticized Calvin s choice of shoes he was wearing and demanded that he change
them. Calvin also has a poorly differentiated self ; he will quickly conform to Beth s demands because
he also craves approval. She demands that her children be and act perfect. When Buck was little,
before Conrad was born, Beth formed a very tight bond with Buck, that seemed to push Calvin out of
the happy little triangle that was their family. Beth s pregnancy with Conrad was difficult; morning
sickness, high blood pressure and a difficult labor and delivery. Beth does not have the same bond
with Conrad as she did with Buck. Since Bucks death, Beth has withdrawn from any connect she
might have had with Conrad; at times ignoring him when they are in the same room together, being
irritated if Calvin wants to share his concerns about their son s emotional state and refusing to even be
in a picture with Conrad. Calvin s alliance with Beth begins to shift when he begins to realize that
Beth is not the person he thought she was. He wonders if she cannot not even find a little compassion
for their son, who is hurting so much; can she even love. As Calvin and Conrad begin to form a
stronger bond Beth becomes stauncher in her beliefs that Conrad is the cause of the turmoil in the
family.
Calvin begins to

The Failure Of Chartism In The United States
Chartism was a movement that emerged by the working class to achieve parliamentary democracy.
They wanted a voice through democratic participation, and they wanted social and economic reform.
The movement existed from 1838 1858 and they got their name from the People s Charter of 1838.
Chartism evolved for economic and political reasons, such as feeling betrayed by the middle class, and
the Whig government adopting policies that the working class viewed as a betrayal. The fall of
Chartism can be attributed to a divided in the groups interests, an improvement in economic
conditions, and the violence that developed during the movement. Their goals were commendable, but
their strategies were inadequate. Although the Chartists failed to reach their ... Show more content on

One of the reasons for their failure can be attributed to the divide in their methods and structure. Some
of the Chartists believed in peace and peaceful protesting, while others believed in violence and its
power to overcome the the rich and powerful that were running parliament. The movement began with
peaceful petitions and the first petition in July 1839, had over one million signatures on it. When
parliament rejected the petition 235 to 46 some of the Chartist members turned to violence. A man
named John Frost led approximately one thousand armed members in the Newport Rising. When
things turned violent many people were killed of injured, and supporters fled because they were in fear
of loosing jobs, or possibly even getting killed. William Lovett, who was one of the founders of the
movement, left the movement because of the violence that was now being demonstrated by the
Chartists. Economic interests were also improving in the 1840 s and because the economic conditions
were on the rise food and goods were not as expensive. Because of this people were slightly less
concerned about the economy leading to more loss of support for the Chartists. There were also
discrepancies on their third and final petition in 1848. They had lied about the amount of signatures on
the petition, and some of the names listed on the petition were said to be forged or listed more than
once. After that third petition the Chartists were mocked in the newspapers for the lies and forgeries.
Some people were not taking them serious anymore and again, they lost more support. Arguably, the
main causes of their fall was the violence, as well as the rise in economy that made the Chartists lose
steam. Even though they were not successful at that time, in later years some of the Chartist ideas
were incorporated into the Reform Acts of 1867 and

Malcom X s Experiences Inspired His Autobiography
Malcom X s Experiences inspired his Autobiography
Considered as one of the greatest and influential in African Americans in history, Malcon Little was
born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska, and murder on February 21, 1965 in New York by three
Nation of Islam members. Best known as Malcon X, he was also known as El Hajj Malik El Shabazz,
an American Muslim minister and a human rights activist. Malcon X was a fervent advocate the
separation of black and white Americans, and rejected the civil rights movement s emphasis on
integration. He fought for the promotion of black supremacy. However, it is impossible to speak about
Malcom X s life, accomplishments or fights without evoking his relation to racism. Experiences that
Malcolm X had relating to racism shaped the way he thought throughout his life. The experiences
inspired him to be one of the iconic figures against racism, which Africa American experienced before
his assassination in 1965. Malcolm went ahead and collaboratively wrote his autobiography with Alex
Haley that would inspire the African American race with the hope that they would go on fighting for
their rights in the following years.
Right from his childhood, Malcolm X, experienced racism. As a child brought up in Omaha,
Nebraska, Malcolm experienced his father being nearly lynched and his home being burnt down by
the Klansmen. Later, white supremacists killed his father and his mother was committed to a mental
hospital. Despite his father being clearly

Egypt And The Muslim Influence On Eating
Egypt and the Muslim Influence on Eating
Maquelin Santana
Hudson County Community College
Abstract
This paper explores the religion, history, and food culture of Egypt. It discusses the geographic setting
and environment that affects the food availability and water supply for the Muslims. The distinct
eating and dietary habits are explained and how they have evolved into modern society. Also, Egypt s
national food is listed along with the history behind it. Lastly, the paper explores the different holiday
and religious celebrations that Muslims celebrate and what foods are consumed during each feast.
Egypt and the Muslim Influence on Eating
Along with other variables that effect the Muslim diet, religion has had a big influence on Egyptian
eating habits. The distinct eating and dietary habits of Muslims helped to create a rich blend of
cuisines that have evolved into modern society. Many of the foods that were consumed in ancient
Egypt, are still consumed in households today.
The Arab Republic of Egypt is located in the northeastern region of Africa. The climate is arid and dry
and most of the country receives less than one inch of rain fall per year. The widespread lack of
rainfall makes it extremely difficult to grow crops. Egypt has no forests and only 2 percent of the land
is arable (land that can be farmed). The Nile was the giver of life for the ancient Egyptians. The Nile
River, the longest river in the world, provided water to drink and fish like

Hydraulic Fracking Effects
Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, has become a large part of the economy in northeastern
Pennsylvania, and has impacted the area s economy, environment, and mindset. Fracking is the
process of extracting natural gas from the earth, and the industry it has brought to areas like
northeastern Pennsylvania shows effects consistent with the ideas of neoliberalism and hegemony. In
order to discuss the effects of fracking, it is helpful to first understand what fracking is. Hydraulic
fracturing is a process by which natural gas is extracted from deep within the ground by drilling
horizontally to reach the deposit, then forcing through a high pressure mixture of millions of gallons
of water plus sand and (often unidentified) chemicals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This raises the question of whether media influence can change ideologies and sway communities
opinions on fracking. A study was conducted on how different types of media on both sides of the
fracking debate influenced readers perceptions and beliefs about the gas industry. This experiment
examined narrative versus informational types of news, meaning whether the information is presented
as more of a story or as a more factual compilation. It also examined how participants perceptions
were impacted when comparing environmental and economic frames. Framing refers to the the
process by which the mass media define and construct issues by emphasizing certain dimensions to
the exclusion of others (Shen, Ahern Baker, 2014, p. 99). The study evaluated how people s attitudes
about fracking changed after reading either narrative or informational news articles on the topic, and
framed with either an economic or environmental perspective (Shen et al., 2014, p. 101). The study
found a significant relationship between the type of news presented and a change in the participants
attitudes (Shen et al., 2014, p.

The Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus Essay
The stories of Icarus and Prometheus are two famous Greek myths, having been portrayed in many
types of media by various renowned artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Lord George Gordon
Byron respectively. The two stories are portrayed in painting and poem form respectively. Both also
tell the stories in a different way by emphasizing some points and overshadowing others to illustrate
their message. Bruegel uses his lack of focus towards the misfortune of Icarus to illustrate that the
suffering or misfortune of one is easily missed or ignored by others, while Byron uses his
magnification of Prometheus suffering in order to illustrate that suffering for a righteous cause is
noble and good. In Bruegel s painting, The Landscape with the Fall of Icarus , he depicts a beautiful
day with a farmer plowing his field, a shepherd herding his sheep, a fisherman ... Show more content

However, hiding in the bottom right corner is a pair of legs, which belong to Icarus who is drowning.
The way that Bruegel tries to downplay and hide the drowning of Icarus by putting him in the
background instead of having Icarus being the main subject in the picture illustrates his message, that
suffering and misfortune of other people are often missed and ignored by others. On the other hand,
Byron, with his poem, Prometheus , writes about the glorious deeds of Prometheus and how
Prometheus is punished unjustly. Byron uses phrases like [a]ll the proud can feel of pain and [o]f thine
impenetrable spirit in order to highlight the glorious suffering and perseverance Prometheus (8, 42).
The spirit of martyrdom is clearly seen in this poem when Byron puts in his poem and making Death a
Victory, as martyrs die for a cause which makes their deaths a victory (59). Byron illustrates his
message, that sacrificing yourself for a just cause is a terrific thing to do, by glorifying the suffering of

Innate and Adaptive Immune Responses on First and...
The immune system is comprised of two responses: the adaptive immune response and the innate
immune response. The first line of defence against invading organisms is classified as the innate
immune response and the second line of defence and protection against re exposure to the same
pathogen is known as the adaptive immune response. Innate immune responses are known as the non
specific manner which composes the cells and defend the host from infection by other organism by
mechanism. The adaptive immunity represents the antigen specific immune response. Compare to
innate immune response, adaptive response is more complex. In adaptive response the antigen needs
to be recognised and processed. The adaptive immune system creates immune ... Show more content

If a pathogen breaches barriers: innate immune response result into an immediate effect of non
specific response. All Innate immune systems derived from plants and animals, when a pathogen
evades the innate response, a third layer of protection is possessed by vertebrates in which activation
of adaptive immune system takes place. The immune system response adopts itself within an infection
and pathogen recognition is improved. As a result of the improved response, its then retains itself
when the pathogen is eliminated in form of an immunological memory and allows the adaptive
immune system to mount faster and stronger when pathogen is encountered each time. To be able to
distinguish among self and non self molecules, both immune and adaptive immunity depends on the
ability of the immune system. Self molecules are known as the components in which the body disguise
itself from foreign substances by immune system. Non self discrimination molecules are known as the
foreign molecules. One of its function is the antigen, this substance bind with specific immune
receptors and immune response elicit. When the pathogen replicates different components of immune

not necessarily shows diseases, disease are only present when the bolus of infection, in terms of when

Alison Goodman Analysis
WARNING this novel has no cringe worthy romance!
Honestly this was a cover buy, the synopsis sounded well, but who can say no to a cover with a dragon
and a female holding what seems to be kantana s. I m not gonna lie, this book is like your average
young adult fantasy book, power is entrusted on the main character who comes from nothing but dirt.
The power brings him or her to the ranks of highly honored people. War happens because everyone is
hungry for power, the emperor dies and his handsome son has to save his kingdom and usually
chooses it over the main character, and drama happens with the occasional kiss. Alison Goodman did
just that but better; honestly it was a refreshing twist on the overly done story plot. Although
Goodman used such an overly used story line I was still hooked, shocked, and even surprised! She has

Mass Conservation Within a Ziplock Bag
Question
Does a controlled (closed system) Ziplock bag experiment demonstrate the Law of Conservation of
Mass?
Claim
According to the Law of Conservation of Mass inside a controlled system, mass cannot be created nor
destroyed, only transformed. This statement is accurate, however, a human error occurred when I
performed this experiment. According to my data in the Ziplock bag experiment, the information I
collected did not support the Law of Conservation of Mass.
Evidence
Throughout the Ziplock bag experiment, the Law of Conservation of Mass was present in 50% of the
ten groups ( five out of the ten groups). To collect the mass of everything, the first direction was to
take the mass of the materials used in the experiment. For the Law of Conservation of Mass to be
activated, the Ziplock bag needed to be closed. If a gas was to be formed, no mass would be created
nor destroyed because in a closed or controlled system nothing is able to escape. Based on the four
pieces of data I collected in my data table, the mass of 75% of my data before and after the experiment
stayed the same. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
50% of the group s experiments did not follow the Law of Conservation of Mass because of human
error. For an explanation of why the mass was changed could be as easily explained as not closing the
Ziplock bag or not measuring the materials exactly. When I performed this experiment, I did not add
the correct weights together. Therefore, this resulted in the before and after mass to not be equivalent
and not following the Law of Conservation of Mass. For the 50% of the experiments that did represent
the Law of Conservation of Mass, the mass stayed the same throughout the entire experiment. For
example, Brooke and Lily s mass of their reactants was 32.3 grams. Likewise, after their experiment
was performed the mass was also 32.3

Primary And Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency
Adrenal Insufficiency This paper describes the differences between primary and secondary adrenal
insufficiency. As health care providers it is important to be able to distinguish between the two and to
know how to treat the patient. It is also imperative that an acute adrenal crisis can be recognized. This
paper will discuss how to recognize and treat adrenal insufficiency.
Primary adrenal insufficiency Primary adrenal insufficiency occurs when the adrenal glands fail to
release glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids, despite the release of adrenocorticotrophic hormone
(ACTH) from the pituitary, and may be fatal if untreated (Griffing, 2015). Margulies (2015) describes

are presented in Table 1.
Evaluation
A medical history is very important if the patient has any symptoms mentioned above, especially
hyperpigmentation of the skin or gums, it is often enough to raise a strong suspicion, prompting the
appropriate tests. The following tests are appropriate to order to diagnose adrenal insufficiency: Serum
chemistry, abnormalities are present in as many as 56% of patients. Hyponatremia is common
although not diagnostic; hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, and hypoglycemia also may be present.
However, the absence of laboratory abnormalities does not exclude the diagnosis of adrenal crisis.
Serum cortisol, less than 20 mcg/dL in severe stress or after ACTH stimulation is indicative of adrenal
insufficiency. ACTH test which is diagnostic, determine baseline serum cortisol, then administer
ACTH 250 mcg intravenous push (IVP), and then draw serum cortisol 30 and 60 minutes after ACTH
administration. An increase of less than nine mcg/dL is considered diagnostic of adrenal insufficiency.

present. Serum thyroid levels, assess for

A Report On A Government
A government should always be open to criticism, be held accountable for their actions, and be honest
when notifying the public of any events. This creates government transparency and allows its citizens
to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. In order to create this transparency in today s
society, a technical system must be set in place. This technical system needs to contain government
documents which are easily accessible to the public. But, not all documents should be housed in this
accessible database. Some government knowledge should be kept secret and inaccessible, because it
could fall into the wrong hands. Documents containing economic information, such as budgets and
spending should be readily available on a database for the public to access. Without a transparent
government, citizens can become unruly and no longer trust their government due to the high volume
of secrets or hidden documentation.
Solution I My first solution to this issue is to open a cloud database which would house any
documents containing government budgets, spending, and/or salaries. This database would be
accessible to everyone with the means to access a cloud database. The database could be accessed via
an application downloaded onto a computer or mobile phone. There is already an app with these
specifications available for Montgomery County in Maryland. The app was built by Socrata, a Seattle
based cloud software company, in order to encourage citizen engagement within their

Alex Kotlowitz met Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers in 1985 while working as a journalist. He was
interviewing them for a photo essay in Chicago magazine on children living in poverty. The violence
that occurred every day where the brothers lived in Governor Henry Horner Homes, or Horner,
disturbed Kotlowitz. Lafeyette and Pharoah are 12 and 9 years old at the start of the book but have
experienced more than many kids their age. The boys did not seem sure of what life held for them.
Lafeyette told Kotlowitz, If I grow up, I d like to be a bus driver, Lafeyette was not sure that he would

Dropping out of school and teen pregnancy are more common than not in the projects.
Horner, like many other public housing, is full of violence. The neighborhoods are run by gangs and
violence often breaks out between rival gangs. In Horner there are gang rivalries between the Vice
Lords and the Disciples. Gang shootings were just a commonplace in Horner life. At 10 years old,
Lafeyette witnessed someone being killed for the first time (Kotlowitz 40). The stress of living in such
a violent neighborhood caused Pharoah to develop a terrible stammer. Speaking became so difficult
that he would be left unable to speak and forced to write things down to communicate. The stress from
the violence affected Lafeyette in a different way. Like his mother, he handled the stress from the
violence by cleaning as much as they could to feel like they had some control over their lives. A lot of
the kids in poor inner city neighborhoods do not have both parents involved in their life and see the
gangs as the family they don t have, leading them to join the gangs. The leader of the Vice Lords,
Jimmie Lee, could be seen as a good thing sometimes because he occasionally took care of people in
need in the neighborhood. Gangs in these neighborhoods are somewhat of an endless cycle. The
violence of the neighborhoods leads the youth to join the gangs but they are the ones causing the
violence to begin with.

Purchasing Power Parity
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
There has been a long standing controversy among the economist about the validity of PPP
(Purchasing Power Parity) in the long run. The parity reveals that prices in two different economies
should be identical to each other when they expressed in terms of the same currency. It is a central
building block in the monetary models of exchange rate determination. One of the most common
practices, to test the validity of PPP is through unit root test of real exchange rate. In this paper unit
root test has been done based on the data on Bangladesh and its major trading partner India, to see
whether exchange rate has unit root or not. It has been found out that the PPP holds i.e. real exchange

There exist no quarterly or monthly data for which the sample size could not be increased nor can use

Unit root test:
The issue of whether PPP holds has been subject to substantial controversy. It is well known that PPP
holds better, among other things, for long span data. One way to test for the validity of PPP is to test
whether real exchange rate has unit root or not. Knowledge of the stochastic structure of real exchange
rates is useful in determining whether shocks to real exchange rates are permanent or transitory, and if
transitory, whether they are predominantly monetary or real shocks. Perhaps, the strongest evidence
for PPP in this sense is provided by Taylor (2002), who employed a century of real exchange rate data
for 20 countries against the US dollar and a world basket of currencies, and concluded that PPP has
held in the long run over the twentieth century for my sample of 20 countries . Taylor reached this
conclusion by using a more powerful test, namely, Dickey Fuller (DF) Generalized Least Squares
(GLS) test of Elliott, Rothenberg and Stock (1996), rather than the standard augmented DF (ADF)
tests. His results were not sensitive to using a different base currency (the U.S. dollar or the world
basket) either. Taylor s findings were also robust to employing either industrial countries or
developing countries.1 As a result, Taylor stated that If PPP holds in the long run, it is no longer
productive to devote further the

The Male Gaze Analysis
The Power of the Male Gaze
In patriarchal society, the male gaze serves as a reminder of the shortcomings and inadequacy of the
female sex. The male gaze as seen in Edith Wharton s House of Mirth functions as an objective
measurement of a woman s worth and a catalyst for Lily s downfall. Lily internalizes notions of the
male gaze and attempts to emulate the ideal feminine archetype. However, the fragility of her social
standing is exposed due to the overwhelming influence of the male gaze.
In The Patriarchal Gaze , Nancy Brannon claims that The camera, not just cinematic technology, can
be thought of as a symbol and applied to patriarchal control in society at large. It is in this light that
the camera can be considered an instrument ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a woman in her society, Lily s choices for marriage are limited as she claims, Ah, there s the
difference a girl must, a man may if he chooses (Wharton). This illustrates the stark contrast between
the standards set in society for men and women. A man may if he chooses, meaning that if a man
chooses not to marry, his reputation does not suffer. If a girl does not marry, the implication is that she
is an unsuitable partner and is unfit for society. Marriage in 19th century society is a rite of passage to
becoming the ideal woman and without marital status, reputation suffers. Lily s downfall from society
is marked as Simon Rosedale rejects her marriage proposal by saying, I won t go into what s
happened. I don t believe the stories about you I don t WANT to believe them. But they re there, and
my not believing them ain t going to alter the situation (Wharton). Regardless of the fact that Rosedale
doesn t believe the stories, the stories still exist and continue to circulate throughout their social group.
Even though Rosedale understands that the rumors are made due to Bertha using Lily as a scapegoat,
scandal permeates their relationship. Rosedale s refusal to take Lily as wife due to her current
reputation reveals how fragile a woman s

Essay on Racism in Children s Literature
For my research project I chose the topic of Racism in Children s Literature. I chose this area of study
because it is something that bothers me and I know as a child in school I was very uncomfortable with
assignments that dealt with racism. One day I would like to make a difference to all the people who
are affected by racism. My hypothesis states that if educators are better trained to deal with the
delicate subject of racism in children s literature, books would not be banned, yet actually teach the
lesson the authors of these books intended for all of us to learn. During an International Board on

There has been a move by many to ban these books, but is that really the answer to the problem? As a
mother, secure in my belief, I want my children to read these books. I want my children to be angry, to
form their own opinions based on what they read, to understand what people in other times were put
through, and most importantly, I want them to understand who wrote these books and why they were
written. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has over two hundred references of the N word.
However, Ernest Hemingway said, All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark
Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It s the best book we ve ever had. These angry words full of hatred
were called the best by one of the most known authors in the world, why? I read this book in high
school myself. I served many afterschool detentions because I refused to read aloud the words of hate.
I did not connect to it then, yet as I have aged I believe it was the way the book was taught. Why did
my teacher not tell us more of the background of Mark Twain? Mark Twain was not a racist, yet it
took me many years to realize that. I finally found a respect for him that I should have known before I

Different Weapons Used in World War II
There were many weapons used in WWII. The most used gun in the war was the M1 Garand. In the
beginning of the war, almost every soldier carried it. It was easy to use, maintain, and reload even if
the person using it was inexperienced. The Soviet PPsh 41 was the second most used gun in the war. It
was mainly used for short range attacks because it wasn t very powerful or accurate. The Thompson
Submachine gun was the third most used gun. The Allies used this gun mostly because of its stopping
power and how fast it could shoot. The Thompson was not used much after the war because it
weighed over 10 pounds The biggest gun used in the war was the Gustav. It aimed well and created
holes 30 feet deep and 30 feet wide. It could be dismantled and shipped all over the world. It was
made by Gustav Krupp. He was married to Berth Krupp and they owned the Krupp Company. He
studied law and politics. After the war, he was charged with war crimes and later died in a car
accident. The Gustav was blown up by the Germans after the war so the Russians couldn t use it The
Ak 47 rifle was the most dangerous gun used in the war. It was made by combining different types of
automatic weapons and assault rifles. The man who thought of this idea was Mikhail Kalashnikov. He
was born in 1919 and wanted to become a poet when he grew older. Things weren t going well with
poetry, so he joined the army in 1938. He became a good fighter and was promoted to general and was

Similarities And Differences Between The Middle And Middle...
Although these colonies were all British, they had a vast amount of differences. The middle and
southern colonies have numerous similarities and differences including land and labor, religion, and
native relations. The middle colonies were extremely diverse in their demographics. Pennsylvania,
founded by William Penn, is an excellent example of a proprietary colony. It was established by
William Penn as a haven for Quakers in the New World. Penn stated I shall not at this time make it my
Business to manifest the Inconsistency that there is between the Christian Religion, and a forced
Uniformity... (Source 1). New York was a mixture of immigrant groups such as Dutch, Belgians,
French, English, Swedes, Finns, etc. This meant that there was a mixture of religions. New Jersey was
also a combination of settlers. In the middle colonies grains were prominent. These required very little
labor to harvest compared to tobacco or rice. These colonies also had a timber industry and fur trade.
In addition, there was a large population of Quaker immigrants who were opposed to slavery. Even
further north, you have an economy based on trade and fisheries. As these industries include slavery,
there is a much smaller amount of it than there was in the south. Carolina also traded guns and other
valuable items with the Indians. Quakers in Pennsylvania use religious policies to govern. They
believed in the individual conscience as well as religious freedom and personal morality. Penn s

New York University Trademark Case Study
Establishing a strong brand is critical to business success. Protecting a brand is equally as important.
According to Law for Recreation Sport Managers, they discuss on what exactly is a trademark and is
recognized as any word, name, symbol, or device, or any combination thereof, adopted or used by
some entity to identify their goods and distinguish them from those manufactured or sold by others
(Cotten Wolohan, 2017). The purpose of a trademark is to protect the owner and to prevent others
from using the mark in a way that will cause confusion. In this case, The University of New York
(UNY) has filed for federal trademark registration their name and logo, however, the New York
Yankees and New York University (NYU) filed an objection on their own expressing that UNY
infringed on the Yankees logo and also infringed on the name of New York University as well. ...

The New York Yankees are more likely to win, since the owner previously has federally registered this

considering that, the name of New York University (NYU) are similar, however, it will be extremely
difficult to prove, since they are both designed differently than one another. For example, their initials

The federal government responded to the October Crisis by invoking the War Measures Act

The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy
Central Theme In the article, The Five Competitive Forces that Shape Strategy, Michael Porter argues
that the five forces are an important element for managers and investors in the business industry.
Porter stated that it is important to understand the competitive forces, and their underlying causes
which many companies will use to determine if they will gain profit or not (Porter 80). Companies
determine their profitability of the industry through the level of the force that they face. For instance,
when the forces are favorable, most companies will be profitable. Porter gives a detail description of
the five forces and explains the importance of each force. The five forces are the threats of new
entrants, the power of the buyers, the power of the suppliers, the threats of substitute for products or
services, and the rivalry among existing competitors. Porter believes that a company strategist who
understands the competition extends well beyond existing rivals will detect wider competitive threats
and be better equipped to address them (Porter 93). In other words, when strategists understand the
different forces it will benefit them to make better decisions and to be ready to face the different
challenges between competitors. In the article, Porter s main goal is to present the importance of the
five forces to the audience.
Critical Analysis There are many strengths and weaknesses in this article. One of the major strengths
is that Porter organize his arguments in

The Taste Of Food Is The Ultimate Weapon Of War
Food is an imperative element of society that has continually brought people together all around the
world. From a BBQ in East Tennessee to eating Chow Mein in China, food holds a deep cultural
meaning and power. It has the means to be a weapon of war, and is a force of development. It is an
organizer and a tool to bring people together, and can be influenced by our social status. Needless to
say, as this world moves into a more modern way of life, the traditional ways of living are visually
fading away. As stated in the previous paragraph, food can be used as a powerful weapon of war. For
example, during WWII Americans all over the country were being asked to ration the food they eat.

In the book, Sociology on the Menu: An Invitation to the Study of Food and Society, Alan
Beardsworth and Teresa Keil explain that, For a start, traditional food systems are characterized by
patterns of local, relatively small scale production. They also go onto say that the modern food system
is made up of five parts which differentiate them from the traditional food society. Firstly, there is a
highly specialized, industrial system of food production. (Sociology on the menu) From which we can
derive that most of the food production for the modern market is concealed. Secondly, distribution is
through the commercial market; whatever our status, as long as we have the money, food is readily
accessible. (Sociology on the Menu) A long as one has the means, going to the grocery store will
never be a problem, especially living in the United States. Thirdly...visit to any supermarket
demonstrates the opportunities for consumption and emphasizes choice and variety, and this is largely
true for smaller food outlets as well. (Sociology on the Menu) Fourthly, since the markets for buying
and selling food and international, even global, shortages are rare. However, that is not to say that
shortages do not occur in particular places for particular groups, only that these arise from social and
political constraints rather than from the issues related to the availability of

Winston Churchill s Iron Curtain
On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill gave his most prominent speech at Westminster College in
Fulton, Missouri. The Iron Curtain is thought to be the mark of the beginning of the Cold War.
Numerous notable speeches were given during the World War II time period, but among these
speeches, the Iron Curtain just seems to stand out. The Iron Curtain dealt with principles such as
freedom, democracy, and justice. He opened up the eyes of millions. Churchill hoped to introduce the
threat of communism upon the minds of the world. People believed the war of the century had already
came and passed, but Winston Churchill presumed otherwise. When the Soviet Union rejected to
adopt democracy, the world began to fear of what is to come. The Soviet Union s decision to not take
part in the expansion of democracy led the world to exist in a constant fearful and anxious state. ...

He describes the Soviet Union s quest to spread communism like wildfire. The Iron Curtain speech
alerted the world s nations about the intentions of the Soviet Union. Churchill saw the Soviet Union

the most distinguished metaphors; an iron curtain was set to describe the controversy between
democracy and communism. In his speech, Churchill acknowledges America s new role as a strong
world power and what they must do.
Churchill s speech recognized that the Soviet Union was trying to convert Eastern Europe to
communism. The Soviets would dominate politically, socially, and culturally in the region.
Churchill recognized that with the building of the Berlin Wall, the Soviet Union was basically saying

How Technology Has Changed Our New Set Of Skills And...
Security is one of the major challenges that is being faced by the world today, as seen by continuous
revelations about breaches and incidents. On this note of insecurity and unpredictability, banking
industry is keen to redefine its approach to security thereby making an attempt to balance three critical
factors i.e. cost, innovation and risk. On parallel grounds, the domain of internal security is
undergoing drastic changes that mandates banking institutions to embrace new set of skills and
practices. Fraud can be categorized as a business risk it is like a sword of Damocles over a bank s

At the same time, developers can make this process arduous with enhanced security layers thereby
increasing the response time to such incidents by the organizations as well as it improvises the ability
to intercept such intrusions before their impact proves to be substantive. Security should be one of the
most elementary fiber of any organization, both in behavior providing people secure alternatives as
well as in technology incorporating security as part of the design process. Deploying the factor of
awareness or fear as a defense tool is an obsolete practice. Our approach should be to make security as
the strength of organizational link.
As the fraud universe in banking institutions is very susceptible and expansive, the banking activities
require full compliance of the standards and best practices in risk management and internal controls.
Full compliance to Bank s requirements in terms of fraud risk management is vital in ensuring fraud
risk in the banking institutions is minimized. It calls for strategized efforts from all levels of staff,
which include those of front liners and senior management levels. Fraud occurs due to loopholes in the
controls of banking activities, hence, concerted efforts to address the weaknesses in the internal

have learned so much about each of my brothers, but even more about myself. I have learned that I
have to sacrifice more time for something I really want, even if that means not going out. I have

Land reform: involves the changing of laws, regulations or customs regarding land ownership. Land
reform may consist of government initiated or government backed property redistribution, generally of
agricultural land. Land reform can, therefore, refer to transfer of ownership from the more powerful to
the less powerful, such as from a relatively small number of wealthy owners with extensive land
holdings such as plantations, large ranches, or agribusiness plots to individual ownership by those who
work the land (Rosegrant Hazell 2000).
Land reform may also entail the transfer of land from individual ownership even peasant ownership in
smallholdings to government owned collective farms; it has also, in other times and places, referred to
the exact opposite: division of government owned collective farms into smallholdings. For example, in
Zimbabwe this process of land reform is in progress whereby the government is take land to the white
and gives it to the black native Zimbabwean and the government is trying to do this to make sure that
poor people do have land to cultivate hence reducing poverty since the large area of land was
controlled by the whites.
Another issue is of land tenure reform which is also under the same land reform program. Land tenure
is system how land is owned. It is important for the government to put policies

Yoshitsune Villain
Yoshitsune, the leader of the Minamoto clan was one of the greatest military commanders of his
generation. Yoshitsune had a great military intelligence and conducted many battles becoming one of
the greatest samurais in Japan. In Samurai Rising (Pamela Turner) Yoshitsune portrayed as a hero and
in Of Nightingale That Weeps (Katherine Paterson), he was a villain. In these two books, the character
of Yoshitsune is different and comparable in many ways.
Yoshitsune was a young boy in Ushiwakamaru when his father died in a battle against the Taira clan.
After the death of his father, the Taira captured the retired emperor Go Shirakawa and ever since the
Minamoto was trying to retain the power to the emperor. As Yoshitsune grew up, he trained to become
a samurai and join the Minamoto to cease revenge of the Taira. He directed many battles and was seen
as a hero to the Minamoto and others becoming their military commander. In the perspective of the
Taria, Yoshitsune was seen as a War God that killed off many of their men. In Samurai Rising it stated
that Go Shirakawa and his son, Prince Mochihito was an ally to Yoshitsune and urge the Minamoto to

Essay Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep
Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep
I sat at my desk, wondering what I could possibly write about The Big Sleep. I mean, there are so
many possibilities. This guy, Raymond Chandler s writing style is so different from anything I have
ever read before, that there are many things that I could talk about. I heard that Chandler once said, I
live for syntax! It does not surprise me that he would say something along those lines. I mean, this
writer is all over the page with different writing techniques. Whether it is his use of similes or the lack
of punctuation, Chandler s novel is easy to read, process and enjoy.
I wouldn t say that this book requires an in depth reading to understand the ... Show more content on

In places that he could use a dash, the reader will see a comma. This is a strange style because it
makes the reader think that he did not know how to use the other kinds of punctuation so he just stuck
to the comma. I think that Chandler was a bit comma happy because every paragraph, consisting of
about six sentences on average, probably has six or seven commas at least that s a lot for one small
paragraph!
Small paragraphs are also a characteristic of Chandler s style. Not including the conversational
paragraphs, I would say that Chandler s average paragraph was six sentences. The sentences say what
they say; they are not long winded, layered sentences, but quick and to the point sentences. The words
in the sentences are not by any means elaborate either. It might take longer to find a word with more
than two syllables than a colon! This technique is very effective to let the reader follow the plot easier;
the words are not ones that an average intellectual person would stumble over.
Possibly the most famous of Chandler s techniques is his use of similes. The man must eat, sleep and
breathe similes because they are everywhere! If the reader were to open the book to any page, most
likely there will be a simile on it. For instance, randomly opening my copy of The Big Sleep, I turn to
page 81 and find this: People who spend their money for second hand sex jags are as nervous as
dowagers who can t find the restroom (81).

Game 3 Game Analysis
The basic way that I used to make profit is Trade on spread. I would take a long or short position
based on the dynamic difference between the spot price and future price. Normally, I am willing to
trade on the size of 20 contracts to ensure that I have sufficient margin to use when I firstly make a
loss on these contracts. Some other matters will be explained in the following games that I have
played in my personal game order.
In Game 2, what I need to do is try to avoid trade losses and achieve net profits at the end of the game.
At the beginning, the spot price and future price were a bit sticky to each other, the future price
fluctuated within 10 cents for quite a long time, so I chose to sell(buy) it at the higher(lower) price and
then to buy(sell) it at the relative lower (higher)price to make a small profit. In session 2, I made a loss
based on my wrong expectation so I should take a bit more risk to recover my losses in later sessions.
For example, If I short many contracts but the market is going up and the basis is widening, then I
need to buy the contracts to close my position as soon as possible, at the same time, I will long more
contracts and sell them when the market go further high to cover my losses and make profits.

Analysis of the battle of Beersheba Essay
History learning task
The Battle of Beersheba was fought on 31 October 1917, when two infantry and two mounted
divisions of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF), attacked units of the Yildirim Army Group
garrisoning Beersheba. This EEF victory began the offensive, which six weeks later resulted in the
capture of Jerusalem, during the Sinai and Palestine campaign of World War I. I think that the
Australian soldiers were very effective in winning Beersheba although the charge was born of the
desperation of having no water and needing to capture the wells in Beersheba.

but as they grew closer the field guns could not lower anymore and therefore could not fire anymore.
That was when an even greater threat was unveiled machine guns they may not be as powerful as the
field guns but there were more and they could be aimed. But some extreme luck, in the confusion of
the charge many of the Turks forgot to change their sights from 1600m and therefore fired over the

he could not play. When Genji and Tō no Chūjō performed Blue Sea Waves, although Tō no Chūjō
was very skillful in his dancing as if he had rehearsed many times, Genji was still the person who
drew all of the attention from their audience. Genji s dance was so elegant, and his voice was so
beautiful that it was likened to the kalavinka, the bird that sings in paradise. Genji s prowess with
painting was also out of this world. The picture contest in chapter 17 ended immediately after his
paintings were revealed, even though the previous contenders were expert painters brought in
specifically for the competition. His paintings were renderings of Suma and Akashi the places where
he had spent his time in exile. Seeing paintings that captured the essence of the faraway place that
Genji had gone to brought tears to everyone s eyes as they were filled once again with feelings
surrounding the despair brought on by Genji s absence. The manner in which Genji treated his many
lovers was another quality that made him such a great man. He took pity on women for their
shortcomings and trespasses against him rather than hating and blaming them.

Ethnic Borderland
The decades of crisis between both World Wars in Europe was an armistice lasting twenty years.
Given France s resentment towards German occupation, and postwar peace and economic conditions
placed on Germany by the Versailles Peace Treaty,Karl von Clausewitz referred to the period as war
by other means. The treaty redrew borders to destroy the Austria Hungary ally of Germany and once
redrawn, thirty eight independent economic units replaced the pre war twenty six, and there were
twenty seven currencies in comparison to the fourteen before the war. These geopolitical changes gave
rise to nationalist upheaval and new waves of hostility among neighboring nations. Imposed
geographical changes affected local politics and occupied local and ... Show more content on

A Biography of No Place: From Ethnic Borderland to Soviet Heartland by Kate Brown, reveals
Stalinism and Nazi history from the perspective of those subjected by the ethnic purification and
imposition of nationalism in the borderland region in the Ukraine, known as the Marchlevsk or Kresy.
There is a sense of conflict in the interwar years. Brown notes that throughout the interwar period,
Ukrainians had been accusing Poles of skewing the census to minimize the Ukrainian population in
the Kresy, which is the eastern half of Poland that was seized by the USSR in 1939. In 1922, Poles
living in the Soviet Union accused Ukrainian officials of deliberately undercounting the Polish
population of the western parts of the Soviet Ukraine border.Furthermore, Brown argues that gender
and class were vital in crafting regional identity, she notes that they were: tied to locality, class,
profession and social status, rather than to nationality. The Marchlevsk Polish Autonomous Region in
the Soviet Ukraine demonstrates the complexity of nationality, and the ambiguity of any line dividing
Poles from Ukrainians since around seventy percent of population Marchlevsk was nominally Polish .
According to Jan T. Gross, the most important structural feature of the twentieth century
totalitarianism is the privatization of the public domain. Gross

  • 2. Essay on Why Gladstone Failed to Pacify Ireland Why Gladstone Failed to Pacify Ireland Gladstone s adoption of interest in Irish affairs in 1867 puzzled many of his contemporaries and has continued to puzzle historians. Up until 1867 Gladstone had shown very little sympathy towards the Irish, all his life he had held them in contempt, visiting only once. His mission to pacify Ireland was surprising and his motives suspect. Many historians believe that Ireland was a cause through which Gladstone was to unify his divided party. Others have said that it was in reaction to the agrarian violence raging through Ireland, it was clear that something had to be done. Gladstone declared that it was his high hope and ardent desire that Ireland would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was hoped that this would reduce social unrest provoked by religious discrimination. Gladstone s plans were courageous; he had no precedent to go by and the task presented immense difficulties. The Act dissolved the Irish Church s power, it meant that it could no longer expect tithes from Catholics and C of I dissenters although this did not mean that the Irish were any better off; the tithes still had to be paid but were now paid to the state rather than the Irish Church. Despite the fact that the Act solved once and for all the major religious grievance of the Irish Roman Catholics [1]in practice it made very little difference the lives of most Irishmen. It did not by any means solve religious differences, Protestants still owned much of the land, and they still dominated the resented landlord class. The consequences of the act were more symbolic than practical, it did very little to pacify Ireland. Most agreed that the key to Ireland s problems lay in the land question. This question of questions for Ireland (John Devoy) proved much more difficult than church reform due to the complexities of the Irish Land System and the wider range of interests involved. Lord Kimberley wrote no measures of any kind can satisfy the Irish: the utmost they can do is to lay the basis for a gradual improvement . Kimberley s prognostication was very close to the truth. Neither Act actually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Family Counseling By Dr. Berger The Jarrett family was referred to family counseling by Dr. Berger, to address the family s breakdown in communication brought on by grief, after losing the oldest son in a tragic accident and the events that followed. The Jarrett s are an upper middle class white family that live in Forest Hills, Illinois. Calvin, the father, age 41, is an attorney in a well established law firm in Chicago. He has been acting as the mediator between Beth and Conrad. He was emotional about the loss of his son, Buck, and is concerned about Conrad s mental health after his suicide attempt. Beth, the mother, age 40, seems to be the leader although, she is a stay at home mother. Beth is socially active and is adamant about keeping up appearances. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the marriage Beth has decreed who Calvin will be as a husband and father; on the day of Buck s funeral she criticized Calvin s choice of shoes he was wearing and demanded that he change them. Calvin also has a poorly differentiated self ; he will quickly conform to Beth s demands because he also craves approval. She demands that her children be and act perfect. When Buck was little, before Conrad was born, Beth formed a very tight bond with Buck, that seemed to push Calvin out of the happy little triangle that was their family. Beth s pregnancy with Conrad was difficult; morning sickness, high blood pressure and a difficult labor and delivery. Beth does not have the same bond with Conrad as she did with Buck. Since Bucks death, Beth has withdrawn from any connect she might have had with Conrad; at times ignoring him when they are in the same room together, being irritated if Calvin wants to share his concerns about their son s emotional state and refusing to even be in a picture with Conrad. Calvin s alliance with Beth begins to shift when he begins to realize that Beth is not the person he thought she was. He wonders if she cannot not even find a little compassion for their son, who is hurting so much; can she even love. They wanted a voice through democratic participation, and they wanted social and economic reform. The movement existed from 1838 1858 and they got their name from the People s Charter of 1838. Chartism evolved for economic and political reasons, such as feeling betrayed by the middle class, and the Whig government adopting policies that the working class viewed as a betrayal. The fall of Chartism can be attributed to a divided in the groups interests, an improvement in economic conditions, and the violence that developed during the movement. One of the reasons for their failure can be attributed to the divide in their methods and structure. Some of the Chartists believed in peace and peaceful protesting, while others believed in violence and its power to overcome the the rich and powerful that were running parliament. The movement began with peaceful petitions and the first petition in July 1839, had over one million signatures on it. When parliament rejected the petition 235 to 46 some of the Chartist members turned to violence. A man named John Frost led approximately one thousand armed members in the Newport Rising. When things turned violent many people were killed of injured, and supporters fled because they were in fear of loosing jobs, or possibly even getting killed. William Lovett, who was one of the founders of the movement, left the movement because of the violence that was now being demonstrated by the Chartists. Economic interests were also improving in the 1840 s and because the economic conditions were on the rise food and goods were not as expensive. Because of this people were slightly less concerned about the economy leading to more loss of support for the Chartists. There were also discrepancies on their third and final petition in 1848. They had lied about the amount of signatures on the petition, and some of the names listed on the petition were said to be forged or listed more than once. After that third petition the Chartists were mocked in the newspapers for the lies and forgeries. Some people were not taking them serious anymore and again, they lost more support. Arguably, the main causes of their fall was the violence, as well as the rise in economy that made the Chartists lose steam. Egypt and the Muslim Influence on Eating Along with other variables that effect the Muslim diet, religion has had a big influence on Egyptian eating habits. The distinct eating and dietary habits of Muslims helped to create a rich blend of cuisines that have evolved into modern society. Many of the foods that were consumed in ancient Egypt, are still consumed in households today. The Arab Republic of Egypt is located in the northeastern region of Africa. The climate is arid and dry and most of the country receives less than one inch of rain fall per year. The widespread lack of rainfall makes it extremely difficult to grow crops. Fracking is the process of extracting natural gas from the earth, and the industry it has brought to areas like northeastern Pennsylvania shows effects consistent with the ideas of neoliberalism and hegemony. In order to discuss the effects of fracking, it is helpful to first understand what fracking is. The Landscape With The Fall Of Icarus Essay The stories of Icarus and Prometheus are two famous Greek myths, having been portrayed in many types of media by various renowned artists like Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Lord George Gordon Byron respectively. The two stories are portrayed in painting and poem form respectively. Both also tell the stories in a different way by emphasizing some points and overshadowing others to illustrate their message. Bruegel uses his lack of focus towards the misfortune of Icarus to illustrate that the suffering or misfortune of one is easily missed or ignored by others, while Byron uses his magnification of Prometheus suffering in order to illustrate that suffering for a righteous cause is noble and good. On the other hand, Byron, with his poem, Prometheus , writes about the glorious deeds of Prometheus and how Prometheus is punished unjustly. Byron uses phrases like [a]ll the proud can feel of pain and [o]f thine impenetrable spirit in order to highlight the glorious suffering and perseverance Prometheus (8, 42). Claim According to the Law of Conservation of Mass inside a controlled system, mass cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed. This statement is accurate, however, a human error occurred when I performed this experiment. According to my data in the Ziplock bag experiment, the information I collected did not support the Law of Conservation of Mass. Evidence Throughout the Ziplock bag experiment, the Law of Conservation of Mass was present in 50% of the ten groups ( five out of the ten groups). To collect the mass of everything, the first direction was to take the mass of the materials used in the experiment. For the Law of Conservation of Mass to be activated, the Ziplock bag needed to be closed. This creates government transparency and allows its citizens to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. In order to create this transparency in today s society, a technical system must be set in place. This technical system needs to contain government documents which are easily accessible to the public. But, not all documents should be housed in this accessible database. Some government knowledge should be kept secret and inaccessible, because it could fall into the wrong hands. Documents containing economic information, such as budgets and spending should be readily available on a database for the public to access. Without a transparent government, citizens can become unruly and no longer trust their government due to the high volume of secrets or hidden documentation. The parity reveals that prices in two different economies should be identical to each other when they expressed in terms of the same currency. There exist no quarterly or monthly data for which the sample size could not be increased nor can use panel data. Unit root test: The issue of whether PPP holds has been subject to substantial controversy. It is well known that PPP holds better, among other things, for long span data. One way to test for the validity of PPP is to test whether real exchange rate has unit root or not. Knowledge of the stochastic structure of real exchange rates is useful in determining whether shocks to real exchange rates are permanent or transitory, and if transitory, whether they are predominantly monetary or real shocks. Perhaps, the strongest evidence for PPP in this sense is provided by Taylor (2002), who employed a century of real exchange rate data for 20 countries against the US dollar and a world basket of currencies, and concluded that PPP has held in the long run over the twentieth century for my sample of 20 countries . Taylor reached this conclusion by using a more powerful test, namely, Dickey Fuller (DF) Generalized Least Squares (GLS) test of Elliott, Rothenberg and Stock (1996), rather than the standard augmented DF (ADF) tests. His results were not sensitive to using a different base currency (the U.S. dollar or the world basket) either. • 25. The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy Central Theme In the article, The Five Competitive Forces that Shape Strategy, Michael Porter argues that the five forces are an important element for managers and investors in the business industry. Porter stated that it is important to understand the competitive forces, and their underlying causes which many companies will use to determine if they will gain profit or not (Porter 80). Companies determine their profitability of the industry through the level of the force that they face. For instance, when the forces are favorable, most companies will be profitable. Porter gives a detail description of the five forces and explains the importance of each force. The five forces are the threats of new entrants, the power of the buyers, the power of the suppliers, the threats of substitute for products or services, and the rivalry among existing competitors. Porter believes that a company strategist who understands the competition extends well beyond existing rivals will detect wider competitive threats and be better equipped to address them (Porter 93). In other words, when strategists understand the different forces it will benefit them to make better decisions and to be ready to face the different challenges between competitors. In the article, Porter s main goal is to present the importance of the five forces to the audience. Critical Analysis There are many strengths and weaknesses in this article. Firstly, there is a highly specialized, industrial system of food production. (Sociology on the menu) From which we can derive that most of the food production for the modern market is concealed. Secondly, distribution is through the commercial market; whatever our status, as long as we have the money, food is readily accessible. This is a strange style because it makes the reader think that he did not know how to use the other kinds of punctuation so he just stuck to the comma. I think that Chandler was a bit comma happy because every paragraph, consisting of about six sentences on average, probably has six or seven commas at least that s a lot for one small paragraph! Small paragraphs are also a characteristic of Chandler s style. Not including the conversational paragraphs, I would say that Chandler s average paragraph was six sentences. The sentences say what they say; they are not long winded, layered sentences, but quick and to the point sentences. The words in the sentences are not by any means elaborate either. It might take longer to find a word with more than two syllables than a colon! This technique is very effective to let the reader follow the plot easier; the words are not ones that an average intellectual person would stumble over. Possibly the most famous of Chandler s techniques is his use of similes. The man must eat, sleep and breathe similes because they are everywhere! If the reader were to open the book to any page, most likely there will be a simile on it. Normally, I am willing to trade on the size of 20 contracts to ensure that I have sufficient margin to use when I firstly make a loss on these contracts. Some other matters will be explained in the following games that I have played in my personal game order. In Game 2, what I need to do is try to avoid trade losses and achieve net profits at the end of the game. At the beginning, the spot price and future price were a bit sticky to each other, the future price fluctuated within 10 cents for quite a long time, so I chose to sell(buy) it at the higher(lower) price and then to buy(sell) it at the relative lower (higher)price to make a small profit. In session 2, I made a loss based on my wrong expectation so I should take a bit more risk to recover my losses in later sessions. For example, If I short many contracts but the market is going up and the basis is widening, then I need to buy the contracts to close my position as soon as possible, at the same time, I will long more contracts and sell them when the market go further high to cover my losses and make profits. This EEF victory began the offensive, which six weeks later resulted in the capture of Jerusalem, during the Sinai and Palestine campaign of World War I. I think that the Australian soldiers were very effective in winning Beersheba although the charge was born of the desperation of having no water and needing to capture the wells in Beersheba.
