German And Native American Culture
All around the world individuals of different descents celebrate Christmas with their own custom
approach. Although my mothers side of the family is part German and Native American, we don t
celebrate any traditions related to our background. I come from the plain old American family who
gets to open one present on Christmas Eve and then sets out cookies and milk for Santa. However, it
may be time to learn a little bit and introduce some traditions to my dull family. German culture has
always seemed appealing to me. In Germany Christmas, or Weihnachten, is considered the uttermost
important holiday of them all. A common tradition specific this culture is Advent. An Advent wreath,
Adventskranz, holds four candles and on each Sunday before

Analysis Of Fagles s Antigone
While Ismene s language relies heavily upon a Northern Irish dialect, differences between Paulin s
Ismene and Fagles go further. In Fagles s Antigone, Ismene is a voice of reason in contrast to her rash
and hot headed sister. She advocates prudence as sensible . Paulin s work offers an Ismene translated
not only linguistically but also in personality. As this Ismene warns Antigone, she thinks only of the
punishment. Her concern is not that the two would defy the state but that they would die and in a most
unpleasant manner. Her speech emphasizes the concern for them rather than the state as she stresses
how we ll die and repeatedly speaks of what will happen to us . These lines clearly mark a point at
which Paulin chose fidelity to Ismene s Irishness over fidelity to Sophocles s politics. However, these
lines also raise questions about the nature of Irishness. Is Ismene s rational response, in the original,
inherently un Irish and untranslatable into an Irish context? And, if so, is Paulin suggesting here that
the Irish are the overly emotional and hot blooded people that stereotypes have made them out to be?
More than a simple substitution of standard English for Irish English, Paulin s translation raises such
questions throughout. As he translates, Paulin displaces Irishness, removing it from a familiar context
defined by Irish/English dichotomies, character stereotypes, and the trite settings and practices
expected of conventional Irish plays.

Roaring 20 s Use Of Hindsight In The Great Depression
The problem with comprehension is, it often comes too late. Rasmenia Massoud is talking here about
what is called hindsight. Hindsight is the way in which you can understand a situation only after it has
happened or developed. When looking at history, we use a lot of hindsight. In the case of the Roaring
20 s turning into the Great Depression, we can see in hindsight that there were many extraneous and
careless occurrences in the 20s that spawned the Great Depression whereas during the 20s we didn t
see this. We can now use hindsight to see that these detrimental factors stemmed from the stock
market, the government, and society at the time. At the time, things seemed great but we can see now
that they inflicted a lot of burden later on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
President Warren Harding and President Calvin Coolidge were the Presidents during the roaring 20s
and they favored large businesses and helped those businesses by making tax cuts that encouraged
business expansion. While the rising of these big businesses did help in decreasing unemployment,
they also played a role in the increase of the cost of living. This higher cost of living made the Great
Depression worse. Another lapse of judgement by the government pertained to both the stock market
and the federal banking system. In the 20 s banks were allowed to invest in land and the stock market
with very little government regulations. The banks were using the people s money to invest in unstable
and unpredictable endeavors. When the stock market crashed, the banks had no money to give back to
the people who stored their money in the banks.
Society in America also helped unknowingly cause the Great Depression. In the 1920s manufacturing
and agricultural advancements in technology caused the increase in efficiency in production. This
seemed to be a great thing, however there wasn t enough demand of these products to keep up with the
rapid production because people weren t making enough money. The leftover supply of these goods
increased dramatically while the income for the farmers stayed low. It set rural, farm areas up to
struggle ever

Involvement In Vietnam
Vietnam, January 31, 1968. The Vietcong and the North Vietnamese army has just launched a large
surprise attack on the U.S and South Korea during the holiday of Tet, engaging in over 120 cities and
U.S occupied bases throughout South Vietnam and Cambodia. This large offensive was led by Ho Chi
Minh and other leaders in the North. Their goal: to weaken U.S. forces to wean off from guerilla
attacks and carpet bombings in the North. They never knew that this historical attack would become
an important role in weakening U.S. public support for the war in Vietnam. Therefore, the Tet
Offensive was a major turning point in the Vietnam War regarding public support. Involvement in
Vietnam had gradually increased over time even before the major turning ... Show more content on

In just six months after the offensive, public support was dropped down to about 40%. The attack
became apparent to the majority of the public that we were still far from winning this was and that our
enemies were still not going to give up. The lack of public support then became a problem for
President Johnson and Westmoreland to take back the offensive in the war. In just two months after
the attack, President Johnson announced that bombing would not take place below the 20th parallel
which saved North Vietnam 90% of their territory so supplies and men could be moved with ease. The
aftermath also killed a lot of morale for the troops and many of them would contribute to fragging
which is when they would kill their officer. Towards the end of the war, President Johnson was not
able to grant Westmoreland s request for 200,000 more troops. He also cut the line down where 19
miles past Cambodia, the neighboring country of North and South Vietnam, U.S. infantryman were
not allowed to advance past that point. This made winning the war even harder when restrictions were
being put. Finally, it got to the point where only South Vietnamese were allowed to fight as
infantrymen and the U.S. could only provide air support and transportation. Unfortunately, many
South Vietnamese had little to no

What Is The Friar s Corruption In The Canterbury Tales
One of Englands most famous writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, was known for writing social commentary
and for his ironic descriptions. His most famous work The Canterbury Tales is no exception.
Beginning with the General Prologue Chaucer reveals the corruption he feels is affecting the church.
One need only look at the General Prologue to understand Chaucer s negative feelings towards the
clergy s corruption and greed. Chaucer feels corruption towards The Friar because he is not a religious
figure as he pretends to be. The Friar was pledged to a life of poverty, and since Friars were licensed
to earn money from hearing confessions, that was their only means for supporting themselves, but it
started to get real unprofessional; when they went from place to place collecting donations for the
Church when the money was actually going to them. Friar s intentions were dishonest and would
make money by selling his blessings. He should have been poor even worse than the people he had
helped, but he was living large and eating healthy. One stereotype the Friar would do is travel around
seducing women and bribe them with gifts. He covered up his sin by marrying them off before anyone

He would go hunting rather than to sit and study the bible like he should have been doing. Even
though Chaucer did not state exactly what he was feeling in the General Prolouge he clearly states his
position and all the reasons why The Monk was a bad and unfaithful Monk. Having jewelrey, dressing
wealthy was something that The Monk enjoyed, but having wealthy clothes and jewelrey did not
match his humble corrupted self. All Monks must comitt to god and devote life and prayer, but unlike
this Monk he was careless and disobeyed this rule and spent most of his time eating, hunting and
getting women. He had lust for food and women. That explains why he is so

The Influence Of Impressionism In The Art Of Art And Art
The Rococo style was popular in France during the 1700 s after the days of Versailles and into the
days of the aristocratic women hosting salons. Rococo artists sold their works to the wealthy people of
society to decorate their lavish salons to awe their guests. The artwork gave the salons their sense of
luxury and sensuality with scenes of classic love stories and lacey dresses. After the impressionist
movement came the post impressionist movement in France. This movement was less unified then
movements before it. These artists were experimental in finding a new way to represent their world
and imagination. Also starting in France during the 1930 s after the Great War came the Surrealist
movement. Following the teachings of Freud, Surreal artist dove into their minds to find the
inspiration for their irrational creations. The Rococo movement focused on creating an atmosphere of
sensuality and luxury in the social salons. The use of bright color in the love stories, extreme detail
portraying naughty scenes and nature is how the artist chose to create their work. They told classical,
fanciful love stories to the wealth French society. In contrast to this fanciful style the geared towards
the wealthy, the post impressionists chose to use art as a way of expression and showing their
imagination while experimenting with different styles. Post impressionist used imagination and
science to show their scenes with color and stiff figures. The Surrealists chose to further this

Julius Caesar Quotes For Research Paper
In life, many people don t do things because of fear. If you don t do something because you coward
out of it, then you will live the rest of your life regretting your decision wishing you had just done it.
The regret you feel will follow you because that moment will never come again. There are many
things that I had the opportunity to do but was too much of a coward. I forever wish that I had done
these things and just went for it. I have lost count of times that I have said no I am too scared, and
backed out of doing something. Or saying I ll do it next time, You never know when next time is or if
there even is a text time so you need to live in the now and do the things that scare you. You can t live
life saying you will do things; you actually have to do them. In the quote That _______ read earlier,
Caesar is talking to his wife Calpurnia. He says, Cowards die many times before their deaths; The

The third character is Miss Tesman(Aunt Juju), who has devoted herself to Tesman. She tries a lot to

sisters are also shown with an isolated background, who cannot enjoy any kind of love ; whether
fatherly, motherly, brotherly or by husband.
The fourth is Mrs. Elvsted , who is showing modern psychological traits in her attitude. She has
abandoned her husband and her whole life aside in order to fulfill her passion. She blatantly verbalizes
her emotion and desires. Like Hedda, her slips of tongue prove her to be a victim of bipolar disease
and personality disorder.
The fifth one is Loevborg, vigorous character, but shows the symptoms of psychological disorder. He

attempt proves him to be a man of fear. His weakness is easily spoiled by Hedda with her

Inductive Learning Or Category Learning
People learn new information through the induction of categories, allowing for the recognition that
different stimuli are the same in a given way. Inductive learning involves recognition and
understanding of the similarities and differences among and between stimuli. To learn a new category
of information, exemplars belonging to a given category are conceptualized and grouped as belonging
to that category. Such learning is fundamental in human cognition, enabling persons to categorize
novel exemplars as instances of a given category or concept (Birnbaum, 2013). In a typical study
conducted on the topic of inductive learning or category learning, students are presented with a set of
exemplars belonging to a particular category and are subsequently asked to identify and induce a
general concept pertaining to the given set of observed exemplars (Zulkiply, McLean, Burt, Bath,
2012). Such exemplars may include nonsense syllables, words, sentences, pictures and faces
(Ebbinghaus, 1985/1913; Glenberg Lehmann, 1980; Rothkopf Coke, 1966; Hintzman Rogers, 1973;
Cornell, 1980). Research on inductive learning shows that participants learn category similarities and
category differences from the way in which study stimuli are presented to those participants.
In earlier studies on inductive learning, researchers examined the benefits of category learning for
education. Researchers focused on how to maximize participants performance in category learning
related tasks. In two such

their own unique ways. In February 1980, AC/DC suffered the loss of their singer, Bon Scott, from
alcohol poisoning and hypothermia. This set the future of AC/DC for the rest of their careers. After the
death of Bon Scott and within that same year, AC/DC acquired Brian Johnson and made their first
album together Back in Black. They released the classic song Back in Black , but there are many

This can be misinterpreted as saying Nine lies, capsized. Using every woman in line. I think another
reason for mishearing Johnson s lyrics is simply the way he sings. Brian Johnson has a unique voice
and does not sing clearly. So, you can read the lyrics yourself, then listen to the song and hear
something completely different. Brian Johnson is from Northeast England, known as Tyneside. The
people who live there are infamously known for their accent, which is called a Geordie accent. This
accent is typically associated with the working class people of the region, but until the 80 s was
referred to anyone in Northeast England. So, the fact that there is already a dialectal difference, from
Great Britain to the United States, plays a big role into mishearing the lyrics. Plus, Johnson s accent
plays a big role into mishearing the lyrics as well. My dad is an outdoorsman, he likes to fish, hunt,

The Last Story Of Jezebel
Malicious, destructive, harlot, corrupt, murderer all words used to describe Jezebel, Queen of the
Israelites. The story of Jezebel, although only told in a few chapters and verses, generated a reputation
for her as one of the most vile and hated women in the Bible. It all began with King Ahab marrying
her, which instigated the whole kingdom to worship Baal rather than YHWH. Next, Jezebel kills all
the prophets of the Lord, and, in retaliation, Elijah kills 850 of the pagan priests. As soon as Jezebel
gets word of this, she pledges to put Elijah to death. Her name is next mentioned in the story of
Naboth and his vineyard. Ahab wishes to own Naboth s vineyard, and Naboth refuses to sell it to his
king. Therefore, Jezebel takes action and writes letters in Ahab s name telling the nobles and elders
Naboth was to be stoned to death for cursing God. When they reported back that the job was done,
Ahab seized the vineyard he desired. In the last story of Jezebel, Jehu is anointed king of Israel by
Elijah and kills Jehoram, Jezebel s only living son. Jehu then sets out for Jezebel to put her to death.
She puts on her finest clothing and does her hair and makeup beautifully, as she expected his arrival.
Her life and legacy end in a gruesome death being trampled by horses. Several commentators have
opinions as to whether or not Jezebel was as heinous as so many people presume. Collectively, most
of the commentators saw Jezebel as the driving force of evil in Kings. In Matthew Henry s
commentary, he refers to the vineyard story and states, Never were more wicked orders given by any
prince, than those Jezebel sent to the rulers of Jezreel. Additionally, he contributes to Jezebel s
reputation as a she devil by directing others to us her story as an example of the power that Satan can
have in the lives of disobedient people. Henry also views Ahab as a victim of Jezebel s said seduction
and wickedness because Ahab had repented in a way that only might be seen of men. He concludes his
commentary by discussing her reprehensible opposition to God and how she should be used as an
illustration of evil to prevent others from following in her immoral path.
Surprisingly, most of the female perspectives on Jezebel s story

Sexual Orientation And The Workplace
Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Workplace
Nelson Mandela once stated, To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.
Every human being should have the same opportunities as each other, no matter their skin color,
background, sexual orientation, career, religion, gender, or socioeconomic status. We were all given
the same human rights when we were born in the U.S., but it seems as if that is gradually taken away
from us, as we begin to stop fitting into the picture society has made for us. Many LGBT+ workers are
denied their human rights when opening up about themselves in a workplace. Sexual Orientation
effects people s stance in the workplace as a result, those whose sexual orientation do not fit the
societal norms have unequal; benefits or opportunities, wages, treatment, and lack from non
discrimination protections.
Discrimination in the workplace occurs all over the world for many different reasons, yet sexual
orientation is one of the least discussed topics. According to Emir Ozeren, In the workforce, LGBT+
employees are one of the least examined minority groups, even though they are one of the largest
groups of people in the workplace .( Sexual Orientation Discrimination in Workplace: A systematic ).
Many studies have been made about this topic one of them being a General Social Survey conducted
by The Williams Institute that found, 42% of LGBT+ identified people in the nation have experienced
sexual orientation discrimination in

In the Go Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person
narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo s vivid imagination, the themes of
growing up and self awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of
Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person narrative
which encapsulates young Leo s fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the dawning of a new
era, My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming true (Chapter 1. p. 28).
Therefore, this device allows the reader direct access to the intensity yet simplicity of a child s point of
view and enhances Leo s personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator s ability to comment and reflect on his child self effectively
emphasizes the naĂŻve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and
suspense throughout the novel, now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way (Chapter 1.
p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood
and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he went away...the relationship
between Ted and Marian would cease (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse
his feelings, I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened (Chapter 16. p.
183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult
narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator s naĂŻve
attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame
for the blossoming of the lovers affair, I had attacked them first (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader
feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo s predicament as he possesses a common child like
sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that he is merely facilitating the relationship
between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees

Corporate Culture at Starbucks
At its most basic, corporate culture is the personality of an organization or simply how things are done
around there. However, in a broader sense it refers to the moral, social and behavioral norms of an
organization based on the beliefs, attitudes and priorities of its members. It determines how employees
think, act and feel. Every organization has a different concept about the kind of culture that it should
have, therefore cultures across organizations may differ despite of having certain common elements1.
However common to all organizations is the essential need of fostering a sense of family so that
employees do not feel that their work is isolated from other parts of their lives. In fact the culture of an

It is amazing to see the way Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks schedules his day. Starting off at 6

write down what people tell him so he can use actual facts when it comes to giving reviews or solving
issues. In one day, on average, Schultz leaves a 100 voicemail messages, writes 25 personal thank you
notes and signs 500 birthday cards. He believes it is very important for him to connect to his
employees and to make them feel connected and close to him. This attitude reduces communication
barriers and thus eliminates a lot of problems. Schultz ideally likes to dedicate 20 to 25% of his time
to his employees during which visiting stores is his favorite activity since according to him if you
really want to know what s wrong with the business you should ask the frontline. Such visits also help
him make and maintain a personal connection with all of the frontline employees and show them that
the organization actually cares about what happens even at the smallest level. Schultz tries new coffee
flavors and listens to his employees complain spending time with them like any normal employee
striving to make Starbucks a better place11. The fact that Starbucks manages to keep such a huge
organization connected like a small community helps make employees feel warm and loved as

Analysis of the Uncertainty Reduction Theory on...
Analysis of the Uncertainty Reduction theory on interpersonal communication
Through this paper I will conduct an analysis of the uncertainty reduction theory and will then apply it
to my own experience here in Colorado university.
This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social
departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal
communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters,
or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
This theory is particularly important for me as I experienced high uncertainty when I first arrived here
in Colorado. When everything and everybody is unknown for ... Show more content on

Curiosity can be a real good motivator and if we can not predict the behavior of this person, we will
seek information in order to predict future behavior.
ß Anticipation: Basically, if you don´t think that you will be somebody again in the future , your
motivation to reduce uncertainty will decrease. You will have the impression to habe done all these
efforts for nothing.
As we can see, the theory of uncertainty reduction exlain us why we behave like we do in our relation
with others. But the theory of Berger has been subject to many studies. For example
, for Sunnafrank developed in his predicted outcome value theory that what motivates you to seek for
further information is the expected positive benefices you think to obtain. According to this theory
when, output value are seem to be positive for oneself, our motivation to seek information increases.
But in the contrary, if we expect negative outcome, we will decrease our motivation and in the worst
cass stop looking for information.in others words if somebody feels that a person can be rewarding to
him , he will look forward to get more information about him. His theory is similar to the high
incentive value condition of Berger.
Some scholars have noticed some problems with this theory . Sometimes information can actually
increase uncertainty rather than reduce it when the information is unexpected. Sometimes you learn
some information about a person that deceive you and make you seem them different. After that

Choices In The Whispering Town And Paper Clips
Every choice that everybody makes effects what happens to us and deciding to be Jewish had a lot of
consequences back in the 1940s. Millions of Jews died all because of the one decision that Hitler
made. The killing of Jews ended up leading to the killing of 24 million other people. In the sources of
The Book Thief, Eva s Story, children s literature and in the film Paper Clips, several choices that key
characters made affected how the Holocaust was dealt with. In children s literature every character has
to make a choice for them to decide every story. In the book The Whispering Town, a young girl
named Anett made the choice to help out the Jews that she was helping out to hide in her basement.
Every once in a while the Nazi police would come and check out to see if anyone in the neighborhood
has smuggled in any Jews to hide. This is what the book said, We ve heard rumors that someone is
hiding Jews on this street, said a soldier, pushing the door open. I haven t heard any rumors, I said,

Making An Initial Visit After Receiving A Referral Within...
Summary The aim of this session was to introduce us to the process of making an initial visit after
receiving a referral within the role of a social worker. This was done with a small group exercise
involving role play. We were placed into groups of four and once in our groups we had to divide
ourselves into roles. There were three roles consisting of Service user, Social worker and observer. We
were then taken to one side with people from other groups whom had be given the same role as
ourselves and briefed on what it was we had to do. I was given the role of social worker, therefore i
was told that I had to plan and undertake an initial visit and given the receipt of a referral. The referral
consisted of concerns regarding a young boy, Max aged 2. The referral was made by the child s
nursery. They had concerns about his behavior and presentation, for example, Max is often very tired,
wears the same clothes for a number of consecutive days, is greedy when given food and aggressive
towards his peers. Alongside this, questions regarding his mother, sally, were also raised. When staff at
the nursery had spoken to her she seemed to show littler concern regarding her son s behavior, she
often smells strongly of alcohol and bruises have been seen on her face. It was therefore my
responsibility to take this information from this receipt of referral on board before then undertaking
my role within the role play of a social worker making an initial visit. Initial Response As is

A Brief Note On The Refugee Agency Un
Introduction:
The Refugee Agency UN says that at the end of 2012, 15.4 million refugees compelled to escape
inside the fringes of their countries due to war and these numbers are increasing daily. 55% of
refugees came from five war affected countries: Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, and Sudan. 44% of
refugees are less than 18 years old. Refugee children are more likely to have genuine issues linked
with malnutrition, physical injuries, brain damage, and sexual or physical abuse. These problems
directly affect the child s cognitive, social, and emotional development leading to serious mental
illnesses, including post traumatic stress disorder and depression (Neugebauer, 2013).

It is also important to realize that there are very few studies about refugee in Australia as most of the
information taken is from the international community (Garakasha, 2014).
This case study paper will share some of the experiences and problem solving methods that have been
helpful across cultures in trying to improve the refugee s health outcomes and improvement of
relationship between the health personnel.
Body
What are the barriers to effective health promotion
A number of refugees face problems of access to healthcare in Australia, with reasons from language
barriers, financial hardship, and lack of knowledge and poor understanding of Australia s health
system (Davidson et al. 2004, Sheikh Mohammed et al. 2006). Researchers on medical services have
found that services are less utilised by those that are less privileged and who happened to be most
needy of health care (Blaxter and Peterson 1982, Correa Velez et al. 2007) (Sheikh et al.,
2014).Research indicates that socially isolated communities suffer higher morbidity and mortality
compared to those that are socially better linked (Berkman 1995, Berkman and Kawachi 2000).The
biggest possible barrier for refugees to get effective health promotion can be of communication and
with no extended family in new country it can make it worst. As Ali and Jamila have two small
children, it would be very hard to maintain their health condition with very low income as they only
rely on government subsidy.

development (Cummins 1). Genetically engineering something is done by altering or disrupting the
genetic makeup. Some examples are microorganisms, plants, fish, trees, humans, and other animals

human genes and animal genes added to the DNA of other animals and plants, creating unimaginable

built up and stayed in fish, and it thinned the shells of birds that ate the fish. The most common birds
were the bald eagles and ospreys. Another development was chlorofluorocarbons that were used in
refrigerants, propellants, and the cleaning solvents. It turned out that they went up into the atmosphere
and destroyed the ozone that protects humans from the sun s radiation. The use of these developments
were reduced significantly and DDT was banned (Union of Concerned Scientists 1). For the first time
in the world, scientists are now the creators of new life (Cummins 1). This is a bad thing. Genetically
modified foods are threatening to human health, animals, and the environment. Thesis First,
genetically modified foods are threatening to human health. The biotech industry says that the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) states that genetically modified foods are safe for humans to
consume. This is not true. Documents from the FDA released by a lawsuit stated that genetically
modified foods are not really safe. They can cause all kinds of health issues. These documents also
revealed that scientists tried to tell the FDA that they are not safe, but the FDA did not listen. Calgene
developed the first genetically modified crop. They developed the FlavrSavr tomato and they had
research to go along with it. Their data showed that lab rats had to be force fed.

Until the End of Time
Until the End of Time When people are experiencing life they tend to imagine someone else alongside
of them who s there to grow old with them; sometimes things work out differently, but all and all there
is usually someone that people envision their lives with. In Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley s short story
The Mortal Immortal, the main character Winzy, who was Cornelius Agrippa s pupil, has tried to win
the hand of his beloved Bertha multiple times and has failed just as many. Bertha and Winzy played a
cat and mouse game for a few years; of chasing each other around and going back and forth of

came to fruition when Bertha was adopted and became a part of a higher social class. Bertha s new

fact that Winzy wasn t able to meet her in the woods, because he was helping Cornelius watch the

Herman Hesse s Well-Known Bildungsroman
In Herman Hesse s well known Bildungsroman, Demian, the novel contains connections to both the
Bible and Nietzsche , The Gay Science. These influences are seen in the chapter, Two Worlds and its
similarity to Genesis; the mark of Cain and its connection to Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and the
preparation for World War 2 to Nietzsche s concept of preparatory human beings. Hesse s influence
from the Bible is seen in chapter one, Two Worlds through the similarity between Sinclair s childhood
life and the story of the Fall in Genesis. Sinclair believes the world is divided into two, the world of
light and the world of darkness. The world of light being love and strict rules, education and example

Demian has major similarities to Nietzsche s, Thus Spoke Zarathustra which is seen through Hesse s
mention of the mark of Cain. In chapter two, Cain , Sinclair and Demian are taught the story of Cain
and Abel in school. As expected, the boys learn the story as it is told in the bible, Cain receives a mark
on his forehead to indicate he is evil. However, Demian explains to Sinclair that he interpreted (the
story) in a completely different way. (Hesse 22) Demian believes that the mark on Cain s forehead is
not an indication of evil rather, it is a mark of power that threatened and scared everyone. When
Sinclair and Demian part different ways after their conversation, Sinclair questions, he not himself a
kind of Cain? (...) Why does he have such a power in his eyes, and why does he speak so scornfully
about the others , the fearful ones, who, after all are actually pious and pleasing to G d? (Hesse 25)
Hesse s inclusion of this quote is to reveal that Sinclair sees Demian as Cain, due to his sense of power
and opposition from the others. Later, the reader learns that Sinclair also has the mark of Cain. Hesse
demonstrates this when Sinclair and Demian are reunited as teenagers and Demian says, you ve
changed. But you have the sign (...) we used to call it the mark of Cain. (Hesse 109) Demian defines
those with the mark as, considered strange, even crazy and dangerous, by the rest of the world. We
were awakened, or at least awakening; our efforts were directed toward ever more complete
awareness, while others always longed to merge their opinions, ideals, and duties, their lives and their
happiness, more and more closely with those of the herd. (Hesse 117) this quote indicates that having
the mark of Cain implies that one separates oneself from mass thinking, the herd. A further meaning
for the mark of Cain is shown when Demian says, felt that we embodied

Review Of Sonata V Of John Cage s Sonatas And...
In this essay we will analyze two modern musical pieces. These pieces are namely Sonata V from
John Cage s Sonatas and Interludes, and Caballito Negro by George Crumb. Composed in mid
twentieth century, both pieces made a great success and they are worth examining in terms of the
historical and subjective values affecting their achievements.
Sonata V of John Cage has binary form which consists of small ranged irregular phrases. The piece as
a whole does not have a distinct melody. The first section has a smooth, repetitive rhythm, and
percussive sound of prepared piano is ethereal. There is a regular pulse throughout the first section,
and the pulse is delayed in some places with a couple of extra notes ( Sonata V, 0:12 0:16). The second
part is more like the developmental part of the Classical sonata form. It is more dissonant and
irregular, and there are pauses between some phrases. The piece as a whole differs from Western
music in almost every aspect. Some parts of the piece resemble African drumming ( Sonata V, 0:47
0:52). However, Cage was actually inspired from Javanese Gamelan, an orchestra of metallic
percussion from Indonesia (Forney et. al., 374).
As Alex Ross describes, Cage love[s] noise (366). This should be why he decided to alter his piano in
a conceptually violent and unusual way for Sonatas and Interludes. Though, Cage s aim was not pure
violence, as we are pleased by the soft sounds instead of being battered by some unholy racket (Ross,
366). I

Summary
The company needs to upgrade its computer equipment. There are two upgrade paths to consider. In
this proposal, we demonstrate how equipment leases take advantage of the benefits of reduced

reduction of capital spending. The company can free up money overall and maintain better control of

Computer technology evolves rapidly. There is a distinct advancement year to year. Computers handle
more processing power, use less energy, and depreciate like rocks falling off Pike s Peak. Leasing
helps prevent obsolescence. It offers an opportunity to upgrade equipment for a fraction of the cost of

The Ethics Of A Civil Engineer
We first deal with the ethical implication of ASCE preparing the report card and the benefit, which
benefits the engineers. The implication of the ASCE should be about moral neutral group of people to
prepare to the report card. Civil engineers should have Presence and obligations to the public as they
should in any other places .so a person who can be swayed by political corruption and bribery, shouldn
t be involved with any activates, Now if ASCE prepare to the report card, the ratings given could be
changed to reflect the need of the economic situation. In case lower rating will be more jobs available
to workforce .If rating are higher few jobs will be needed for infrastructure development.
The primary concern of a civil engineer should always be the safety, health, and welfare of the public.
Working in any field should never compromise on moral principles at work. for example if a project
takes place in an area prone to natural disasters should not be used as an excuse to cut concerns when
it comes to safety. An engineer should make every effort to complete it to their client s full
satisfaction; an engineer should make every effort to complete it to their client s full satisfaction;
however they have to know where to draw the line when it comes to matters of safety. So engineers
should keep their obligations regardless of the cost, knowing the limits of their knowledge and
abilities, and determining what an adequate level of safety is. How might ASCE s role

Tale Of Two Cities Women
Throughout history, women have been viewed as inferior to men, being portrayed as weak, less
intelligent, and dependent on men. This point of view has been exemplified in many literary works by
creating a male dominant society. In A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, the female
characters unlike the male, are all created as if to say that women are not capable of being well
rounded people. Dickens portrayal of women in A Tale of Two Cities is problematic because rather
than craft well rounded characters, as he does with many of the male characters, he portrays them as
beautiful but stereotypically weak, clever but crazy, and unattractive yet brave.
One of the first female characters introduced, Lucie Manette, is depicted as being

was the feeling of terror and afraidness. My soul was telling me not to do this, I was too afraid. So,
instead of sacrificing myself, I threw both stick grenades towards the tanks hoping that it would do
damage. With nothing happening I threw two more and screams of bloody murder rang throughout my

Orion Magazine Based On Environmental Activism
Although Orion is a magazine based primarily on environmental activism, it also often incorporates
scientific thought and evidence. Sometimes the articles do roam into the world of eco extremism, but I
genuinely feel that by reading this website, audiences lives are enriched by its content. The editors
clearly care as much about the message each issue sends as the authors of the pieces presented therein.
The layout provides the respect to the articles and photography that they deserve. Thus, the website
Orion provides an effective translation of science by displaying inspiration relating to travel, writing,
and learning successfully to the intended audience of the young or old adult.
The objective of Orion magazine is to not only providing valuable information to numerous scientific
related articles, but also to cultural concerns. I was able to conclude that it is an extremely successful
entertainment and educational site. The design of the website is very bright and appealing to the eye.
Its layout is inviting and easy to navigate. When looking further into the magazine s design, one sees
that it is consistent with all the pages. There are many graphics including, photographs, which
eventually lead the reader into more personal topics. This attention grabbing mechanism, essentially
allows the audience to explore what they are interested in. The articles are also placed in an orderly
fashion and do not create a cluttered appearance. The simplicity does not mean Orion is

  • 2. German And Native American Culture All around the world individuals of different descents celebrate Christmas with their own custom approach. Although my mothers side of the family is part German and Native American, we don t celebrate any traditions related to our background. I come from the plain old American family who gets to open one present on Christmas Eve and then sets out cookies and milk for Santa. However, it may be time to learn a little bit and introduce some traditions to my dull family. German culture has always seemed appealing to me. In Germany Christmas, or Weihnachten, is considered the uttermost important holiday of them all. A common tradition specific this culture is Advent. • 3. Analysis Of Fagles s Antigone While Ismene s language relies heavily upon a Northern Irish dialect, differences between Paulin s Ismene and Fagles go further. In Fagles s Antigone, Ismene is a voice of reason in contrast to her rash and hot headed sister. She advocates prudence as sensible . Paulin s work offers an Ismene translated not only linguistically but also in personality. As this Ismene warns Antigone, she thinks only of the punishment. Her concern is not that the two would defy the state but that they would die and in a most unpleasant manner. Her speech emphasizes the concern for them rather than the state as she stresses how we ll die and repeatedly speaks of what will happen to us . These lines clearly mark a point at which Paulin chose fidelity to Ismene s Irishness over fidelity to Sophocles s politics. However, these lines also raise questions about the nature of Irishness. Is Ismene s rational response, in the original, inherently un Irish and untranslatable into an Irish context? And, if so, is Paulin suggesting here that the Irish are the overly emotional and hot blooded people that stereotypes have made them out to be? More than a simple substitution of standard English for Irish English, Paulin s translation raises such questions throughout. As he translates, Paulin displaces Irishness, removing it from a familiar context defined by Irish/English dichotomies, character stereotypes, and the trite settings and practices expected of conventional Irish plays. ... • 4. Roaring 20 s Use Of Hindsight In The Great Depression The problem with comprehension is, it often comes too late. Rasmenia Massoud is talking here about what is called hindsight. Hindsight is the way in which you can understand a situation only after it has happened or developed. When looking at history, we use a lot of hindsight. In the case of the Roaring 20 s turning into the Great Depression, we can see in hindsight that there were many extraneous and careless occurrences in the 20s that spawned the Great Depression whereas during the 20s we didn t see this. We can now use hindsight to see that these detrimental factors stemmed from the stock market, the government, and society at the time. At the time, things seemed great but we can see now that they inflicted a lot of burden later on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... President Warren Harding and President Calvin Coolidge were the Presidents during the roaring 20s and they favored large businesses and helped those businesses by making tax cuts that encouraged business expansion. While the rising of these big businesses did help in decreasing unemployment, they also played a role in the increase of the cost of living. This higher cost of living made the Great Depression worse. Another lapse of judgement by the government pertained to both the stock market and the federal banking system. In the 20 s banks were allowed to invest in land and the stock market with very little government regulations. The banks were using the people s money to invest in unstable and unpredictable endeavors. When the stock market crashed, the banks had no money to give back to the people who stored their money in the banks. Society in America also helped unknowingly cause the Great Depression. In the 1920s manufacturing and agricultural advancements in technology caused the increase in efficiency in production. This seemed to be a great thing, however there wasn t enough demand of these products to keep up with the rapid production because people weren t making enough money. The leftover supply of these goods increased dramatically while the income for the farmers stayed low. It set rural, farm areas up to struggle ever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Vietcong and the North Vietnamese army has just launched a large surprise attack on the U.S and South Korea during the holiday of Tet, engaging in over 120 cities and U.S occupied bases throughout South Vietnam and Cambodia. This large offensive was led by Ho Chi Minh and other leaders in the North. Their goal: to weaken U.S. forces to wean off from guerilla attacks and carpet bombings in the North. They never knew that this historical attack would become an important role in weakening U.S. public support for the war in Vietnam. The attack became apparent to the majority of the public that we were still far from winning this was and that our enemies were still not going to give up. The lack of public support then became a problem for President Johnson and Westmoreland to take back the offensive in the war. In just two months after the attack, President Johnson announced that bombing would not take place below the 20th parallel which saved North Vietnam 90% of their territory so supplies and men could be moved with ease. The aftermath also killed a lot of morale for the troops and many of them would contribute to fragging which is when they would kill their officer. Towards the end of the war, President Johnson was not able to grant Westmoreland s request for 200,000 more troops. He also cut the line down where 19 miles past Cambodia, the neighboring country of North and South Vietnam, U.S. infantryman were not allowed to advance past that point. • 6. What Is The Friar s Corruption In The Canterbury Tales One of Englands most famous writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, was known for writing social commentary and for his ironic descriptions. His most famous work The Canterbury Tales is no exception. Beginning with the General Prologue Chaucer reveals the corruption he feels is affecting the church. One need only look at the General Prologue to understand Chaucer s negative feelings towards the clergy s corruption and greed. Chaucer feels corruption towards The Friar because he is not a religious figure as he pretends to be. The Friar was pledged to a life of poverty, and since Friars were licensed to earn money from hearing confessions, that was their only means for supporting themselves, but it started to get real unprofessional; when they went from place to place collecting donations for the Church when the money was actually going to them. Friar s intentions were dishonest and would make money by selling his blessings. He should have been poor even worse than the people he had helped, but he was living large and eating healthy. The Influence Of Impressionism In The Art Of Art And Art The Rococo style was popular in France during the 1700 s after the days of Versailles and into the days of the aristocratic women hosting salons. Rococo artists sold their works to the wealthy people of society to decorate their lavish salons to awe their guests. The artwork gave the salons their sense of luxury and sensuality with scenes of classic love stories and lacey dresses. After the impressionist movement came the post impressionist movement in France. This movement was less unified then movements before it. These artists were experimental in finding a new way to represent their world and imagination. Also starting in France during the 1930 s after the Great War came the Surrealist movement. Following the teachings of Freud, Surreal artist dove into their minds to find the inspiration for their irrational creations. The Rococo movement focused on creating an atmosphere of sensuality and luxury in the social salons. The use of bright color in the love stories, extreme detail portraying naughty scenes and nature is how the artist chose to create their work. They told classical, fanciful love stories to the wealth French society. • 13. Inductive Learning Or Category Learning People learn new information through the induction of categories, allowing for the recognition that different stimuli are the same in a given way. Inductive learning involves recognition and understanding of the similarities and differences among and between stimuli. To learn a new category of information, exemplars belonging to a given category are conceptualized and grouped as belonging to that category. Such learning is fundamental in human cognition, enabling persons to categorize novel exemplars as instances of a given category or concept (Birnbaum, 2013). In a typical study conducted on the topic of inductive learning or category learning, students are presented with a set of exemplars belonging to a particular category and are subsequently asked to identify and induce a general concept pertaining to the given set of observed exemplars (Zulkiply, McLean, Burt, Bath, 2012). Such exemplars may include nonsense syllables, words, sentences, pictures and faces (Ebbinghaus, 1985/1913; Glenberg Lehmann, 1980; Rothkopf Coke, 1966; Hintzman Rogers, 1973; Cornell, 1980). Research on inductive learning shows that participants learn category similarities and category differences from the way in which study stimuli are presented to those participants. In earlier studies on inductive learning, researchers examined the benefits of category learning for education. Researchers focused on how to maximize participants performance in category learning related tasks. In two such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. The Last Story Of Jezebel Malicious, destructive, harlot, corrupt, murderer all words used to describe Jezebel, Queen of the Israelites. The story of Jezebel, although only told in a few chapters and verses, generated a reputation for her as one of the most vile and hated women in the Bible. It all began with King Ahab marrying her, which instigated the whole kingdom to worship Baal rather than YHWH. Next, Jezebel kills all the prophets of the Lord, and, in retaliation, Elijah kills 850 of the pagan priests. As soon as Jezebel gets word of this, she pledges to put Elijah to death. Her name is next mentioned in the story of Naboth and his vineyard. Ahab wishes to own Naboth s vineyard, and Naboth refuses to sell it to his king. Therefore, Jezebel takes action and writes letters in Ahab s name telling the nobles and elders Naboth was to be stoned to death for cursing God. When they reported back that the job was done, Ahab seized the vineyard he desired. In the last story of Jezebel, Jehu is anointed king of Israel by Elijah and kills Jehoram, Jezebel s only living son. Jehu then sets out for Jezebel to put her to death. She puts on her finest clothing and does her hair and makeup beautifully, as she expected his arrival. Her life and legacy end in a gruesome death being trampled by horses. Several commentators have opinions as to whether or not Jezebel was as heinous as so many people presume. Collectively, most of the commentators saw Jezebel as the driving force of evil in Kings. In Matthew Henry s commentary, he refers to the vineyard story and states, Never were more wicked orders given by any prince, than those Jezebel sent to the rulers of Jezreel. Additionally, he contributes to Jezebel s reputation as a she devil by directing others to us her story as an example of the power that Satan can have in the lives of disobedient people. Henry also views Ahab as a victim of Jezebel s said seduction and wickedness because Ahab had repented in a way that only might be seen of men. In the Go Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo s vivid imagination, the themes of growing up and self awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person narrative which encapsulates young Leo s fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the dawning of a new era, My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming true (Chapter 1. p. 28). Therefore, the adult narrator s ability to comment and reflect on his child self effectively emphasizes the naĂŻve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and suspense throughout the novel, now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way (Chapter 1. p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he went away...the relationship between Ted and Marian would cease (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse his feelings, I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened (Chapter 16. p. 183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator s naĂŻve attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame for the blossoming of the lovers affair, I had attacked them first (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo s predicament as he possesses a common child like sense of misguided responsibility. • 25. Making An Initial Visit After Receiving A Referral Within... Summary The aim of this session was to introduce us to the process of making an initial visit after receiving a referral within the role of a social worker. This was done with a small group exercise involving role play. We were placed into groups of four and once in our groups we had to divide ourselves into roles. There were three roles consisting of Service user, Social worker and observer. We were then taken to one side with people from other groups whom had be given the same role as ourselves and briefed on what it was we had to do. I was given the role of social worker, therefore i was told that I had to plan and undertake an initial visit and given the receipt of a referral. The referral consisted of concerns regarding a young boy, Max aged 2. The referral was made by the child s nursery. They had concerns about his behavior and presentation, for example, Max is often very tired, wears the same clothes for a number of consecutive days, is greedy when given food and aggressive towards his peers. Alongside this, questions regarding his mother, sally, were also raised. When staff at the nursery had spoken to her she seemed to show littler concern regarding her son s behavior, she often smells strongly of alcohol and bruises have been seen on her face. It was therefore my responsibility to take this information from this receipt of referral on board before then undertaking my role within the role play of a social worker making an initial visit. When she had no other way to express herself, food became her mode of communication. In chapter two, Cain , Sinclair and Demian are taught the story of Cain and Abel in school. As expected, the boys learn the story as it is told in the bible, Cain receives a mark on his forehead to indicate he is evil. However, Demian explains to Sinclair that he interpreted (the story) in a completely different way. (Hesse 22) Demian believes that the mark on Cain s forehead is not an indication of evil rather, it is a mark of power that threatened and scared everyone. When Sinclair and Demian part different ways after their conversation, Sinclair questions, he not himself a kind of Cain? (...) Why does he have such a power in his eyes, and why does he speak so scornfully about the others , the fearful ones, who, after all are actually pious and pleasing to G d? (Hesse 25) Hesse s inclusion of this quote is to reveal that Sinclair sees Demian as Cain, due to his sense of power and opposition from the others. Later, the reader learns that Sinclair also has the mark of Cain. Hesse demonstrates this when Sinclair and Demian are reunited as teenagers and Demian says, you ve changed. But you have the sign (...) we used to call it the mark of Cain. (Hesse 109) Demian defines those with the mark as, considered strange, even crazy and dangerous, by the rest of the world. We were awakened, or at least awakening; our efforts were directed toward ever more complete awareness, while others always longed to merge their opinions, ideals, and duties, their lives and their happiness, more and more closely with those of the herd. • 35. Review Of Sonata V Of John Cage s Sonatas And... In this essay we will analyze two modern musical pieces. These pieces are namely Sonata V from John Cage s Sonatas and Interludes, and Caballito Negro by George Crumb. Composed in mid twentieth century, both pieces made a great success and they are worth examining in terms of the historical and subjective values affecting their achievements. Sonata V of John Cage has binary form which consists of small ranged irregular phrases. The piece as a whole does not have a distinct melody. The first section has a smooth, repetitive rhythm, and percussive sound of prepared piano is ethereal. There is a regular pulse throughout the first section, and the pulse is delayed in some places with a couple of extra notes ( Sonata V, 0:12 0:16). The second part is more like the developmental part of the Classical sonata form. It is more dissonant and irregular, and there are pauses between some phrases. The piece as a whole differs from Western music in almost every aspect. Some parts of the piece resemble African drumming ( Sonata V, 0:47 0:52). However, Cage was actually inspired from Javanese Gamelan, an orchestra of metallic percussion from Indonesia (Forney et. al., 374). As Alex Ross describes, Cage love[s] noise (366). This should be why he decided to alter his piano in a conceptually violent and unusual way for Sonatas and Interludes. Though, Cage s aim was not pure violence, as we are pleased by the soft sounds instead of being battered by some unholy racket (Ross, 366). I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
