Nola Girl with Umbrella also known as Rain Girl or Nola Girl was created by Banksy in 2008 as a
form of street art. Banksy is a graffiti artist from England. His work focuses on political issues, and
dark humor. Banksy is also a political activist and film director. He has given graffiti a new name. His
work is no longer considered vandalism; It is well sought out art which is marketed for a high price.
Banksy s identity still remains unknown even though there are some contenders for whom we assume
he is. Banksy s Nola Girl first appeared in New Orleans, Louisiana on a grey wall. This specific form
or style of street art is referred to as stencil art which Banksy is well known for. A stencil is used in
order to create the same image several times. A stencil is usually a thin sheet of material used to create
the design underneath the surface in which it is being placed, depicting an image.
This piece is dominated by a young girl in a black dress. She is standing with her hand held out from
underneath a black umbrella in which she seeks shelter from. Her hair looks heavy and stringy, it

The meaning behind this piece was to show how things we often seek protection and comfort from can
often hurt us. He portrayed this message by displaying rain pouring from beneath an umbrella; an item
in which its purpose is to protect us from rain, or keep us dry. Banksy came up with Nola Girl a couple
years after hurricane Katrina passed by; which destroyed the city of New Orleans. The word Nola
refers to New Orleans Louisiana; even though in New Orleans Nola is perceived as the sad truth and
dark reality of the events that befell the city. Hurricane Katrina was devastating; it left scars on the
lives of many people. Nola Girl was created as a reminder of that suffering which still lives
throughout the city
