Two men, or more accurately speaking, two novels separated by nearly a century, both examine the
importance of labor and its effects on a capitalist system. Adam Smith published the Wealth of Nations
in 1776 in which he detailed his concept of the division of labor; a concept he believed would further
the productivity of the labor market. In Capital, Volume 1, published in 1867, Karl Marx took a much
different stance on the division of labor. Writing nearly a century after the publication of the Wealth of
Nations, Marx was in the position of the critiquing Smith s revolutionary theory of the division of
labor. Instead of praising Smith, Marx saw the current state of labor and the capitalist model of society
as degrading to the laborer. Through analysis of these two novels, one can see that there exists two
very polarizing views on the potential of the division of labor. For Smith, the division of labor

Smith praised the potential of the division of labor. Marx, writing one hundred years later, witnessed

The four papers about pedestrian detection we chose to summarize were great and informative, all
suggested useful techniques and new ideas in deep learning for pedestrian detection. However, there
were few open issues or room for improvement in some of the papers. Here are some of the ideas we
suggested to resolve these issues in each paper.
Joint Deep Learning for Pedestrian Detection (UDN)
Even though the Unified Deep Net (UDN) method learned features by designing hidden layers for the
Convolutional Neural Network such that features, deformable parts, occlusions, and classification can
be jointly optimized, one of its problems is it treats pedestrian detection as a single binary
classification task, which is not able to capture rich pedestrian variations. For example, the method is
not able to distinguish pedestrians from hard negatives due to their visual similarities. This problem
can be resolved by jointly optimizing pedestrian detection with auxiliary semantic tasks, such as
including pedestrian attributes and scene attributes, which was represented in our previous report.
Another problem with the UDN method is it did not explicitly model mixture of templates for each
body parts, and did not depress the influence of background clutters. Thus, the method could be

On March 25th, 1984 Senna had his first Formula 1 race, the Brazilian Grand Prix. He qualified 16th
and eventually had to retire with a blown turbo. The next race he had was Monaco and it was horrible.
It was raining heavily and Senna was overjoyed. He qualified 13th on the grid, and during the race, he
slowly came up to second place, right behind the French prodigy, Alain Prost. On lap 32, the story
everyone remembers, Prost slowed at the starting line because he wanted to stop the race due to the
terrible conditions, and as he did, Senna overtook him. But right as he did, the red flag was pulled out
because of the extremely rainy conditions. Therefore, the positions for the second to last lap were
taken, with Prost in first and Senna second. He was furious because he believed he had one his first
Grand Prix. But everyone was still impressed with Senna s performance. One of those people was
Lotus manager Peter Warr. When Senna told his manager from Toleman that he was moving to Lotus,
the Toleman team was furious because Senna was breaking the two year contract he had signed with
Toleman.
It was 1985 and a new start for Senna and his Lotus, but that year was terrible. Senna was a DNF for
