2. The Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress Essay
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a marvelous novel, written by Dai Sijie, which himself
was re educated between 1971 and 1974 during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In Dai Sijie s Balzac
and the Little Seamstress three separate accounts are given of an incident in which Luo and the Little
Seamstress make love in an isolated mountain pool. Two of these perspectives are given by the
participants while the third is provided by the old miller who observes their love making from a
distance. Of all the accounts, I found the count of this incident of Little Seamstress most appealing as
she is able to present at an imaginative description of this setting and allow the readers to understand
her thoughts and feelings. In contrast the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her account of this incident appealed to be in part because of her description of the underwater
scenery. Her description is both visual and tactile. Similes describe the stones underwater as small and

she is familiar with in her surroundings such as strangely jutting curves like buffalo horns. The
contrasting words such as smooth, sharp and jagged all help the reader imagine the bottom of the pool.
This passage also reveals a side of the Little Seamstress s character which has not been revealed, her
independence of her mind. This is where she explains why she loves to dive for Luo s key ring. She
rejects that she is I m like a silly dog that keeps running to fetch the stick thrown by its master. I m not

3. Neanderthal Research Paper
Discovering the origins and timeline of our species genetics is an essential component of our history.
The majority of research into this topic has been relatively recent within the past many years.
Scientists are consistently providing new findings and new information for this rising area of interest.
Through widespread learning of this material can we collectively make sound judgements based on
our own past.
Have humans once interbred with Neanderthals?
As recently as only five years ago, anthropology researchers found that humans and Neanderthals had
interbred at some point in time simply based on the shapes of skulls found in caves buried beneath
thousands of years of soil. This mirrors a 2010 study that has uncovered the first proven ... Show more

While incredibly common, there is little doubt regarding the evidential nature of specified human
groups containing this DNA. Neanderthals could not have contributed to modern African peoples
genomes because Neanderthals evolved and lived exclusively in Eurasia and therefore could not have
bred with the humans living in Africa at that time (Smithsonian Institution). There is a clear difference
in that exclusively humans of Eurasian descent have appeared to actually have Neanderthal DNA, in
comparison to modern African peoples . Along with this, we know that these encounters may have
occurred as modern humans moved into Europe. Humans may have even lived alongside Neanderthals
for thousands of years, allowing for centuries of genetic exchange (Smithsonian Institution). Therein
lies part of the controversy, as some make uneducated points as to differentiate Neanderthal DNA as
part of a racial difference between those of Eurasian and African descent. Yet there is no current
evidence to suggest Neanderthal DNA has any dictation on race alone. Although data shows this to be
a frequent ancient occurrence, we must take into account the historically extensive amount of time
between these collaborations that have been thought to have happened, and just how archaic they truly

The subculture sneakerheads started in the early 70s and late 80s (Martin). This trend was part of
Burgeoning B boy and Hip Hop movement of N.Y. (Lammle). Once this subculture started getting
more popular it attracted more people. Even at retail price back then $125 stores couldn t keep the

to lessen the burden of what is considered high, debt incurring tuition for each post secondary student.
This house will create a committee that will watch over all public colleges expenses known as the

believes that each individual student should receive their own customized tuition price based on their
financial need, which will be established through a questionnaire that will be filled out during the
process of applying to the institutions that this bill will impact. Section 1: Public Enhancement This

The California Wetlands
Smelly, insect infested, and disease ridden are many words that people have used to describe the
attributes of wetlands in our country. Until recently it was thought that wetlands served very little use
as a part of our ecosystem. However, as the developers began to drain and destroy these wetlands in
order to build housing developments and commercial buildings environmental scientists emerged from
the woodwork. These environmental scientists found the value and absolute necessity for wetlands
and brought it to the attention of politicians. The politicians are the only ones who could slow the
destruction of wetlands with their policies.

A major function of wetlands is that they naturally clean the table waters. With the use of
microorganisms it is possible to naturally clean the water supply much better than many water
purification plants. A benefit of purifying water with the use of wetlands is that not only does it save
the taxpayers money but it also saves the environment from the pollution that a water purification
plant would produce. Another function of wetlands is its storage ability. In the event of a large storm
or heavy rain wetlands can store the floodwaters so that they do not over run the near by area. To
reduce the effects of flooding wetlands are able to store stormwater and gradually returning it to
surface flow, reducing the effects of erosion by stabilizing soils, and dampening the effects of wave
action . M. Dennison et.al. 1993. Wetlands also provide a feeding ground and habitat to many fish,
waterfowl and other wildlife. Many endangered birds nest and breed on the shores of wetlands and
these habitats are crucial for their survival. The destruction of wetlands has become a major problem,
especially in California.
In the United States the destruction of wetlands had been enormous, however in the state of California
it has been estimated that nearly ninety three percent of the wetlands have been destroyed. With profit

Throughout the entire design process of the Phoenix Center, Studio 6 has designed along the lines of
incorporating the concept of split yet connected. Each structure works as a whole to meet the functions
mentioned in the program, but in certain areas, the overall structure splits to form separate spaces. The
equine center, clinic, treehouse, cabin, bathhouse, as well as the pavilion all have a sense of separate
yet connected to allow for a sense of continuity throughout the site s design. At the beginning of the
design process for the equine center, we went with a more noticeable split yet connected element. As
the design process evolved and changes were made, the separation of the elements gradually

The connection of the arena and the round pin to the barn, was a challenge we encountered. After
doing research, we came together and decided to incorporate a colorful walkway that compliments the
aesthetics as well as making the building more appealing to the clients. While the equine center has
the colorful walkway, the clinic and the bath house have a louver system along the exterior facade.
This louver system will allow the clients to interact with the building, as well as being in control of the
environment that is around them. The thought of physically being able to move the louvers grants the
client the option to leave their mark on the building. The design of the clinic is three separate parts that
all connect at the corners. This design is connected together at the center with an interactive outdoor
corridor. Underneath the overhang for the outdoor corridor are stepping stones that have the option for
children to have their own specific stepping stones that are different from an adults. On the clinic,
Studio 6 incorporated a sense of biophilia by using a small creek, flowing from the exterior of the
structure into the courtyard. This small element brings an overall relaxing sense to the clients and
increases one s chance of overcoming the trauma they have been through. Along with the creek, we

8. Aspects Of Transnational It Operations
Aspects of Transnational IT Operations
The social, economic, and technological market places are incorporating information technology (IT)
systems in many countries that support the activities of a business. Competition throughout several
industries have brought about many new changes, but specifically, a growth of transnational
opportunities. A transnational business conducts operations in several countries with varying degrees
of coordination and integration of strategy and operations (Basu, n.d., para. 1).
Transnational operations provide companies a way to establish activities that add value to its business.
These activities include various world markets with national similarities as well as national
differences. A strategic management plan should enhance the company s global vision, sometimes
with a modified effect for local markets. Transnational IT operations offer companies many
advantages, but with these rewards also come drawbacks.
Advantages
The following advantages of global networking can positively impact any company that is actively
involved in global marketing. These include:
Lower labor costs as the cost of living and labor are less expensive than in the United States
The use of external skill sets in other countries
Outsourcing repetitive and less challenging tasks to other countries
Business continuity across an entire network when potential issues arise
Continued support for customer service and satisfaction

Another large component of Puerto Ricanness is Race. All of the different cultures that have
throughout history combined to form Puerto Rico effect their nationality, history, lifestyles, traditions,

The discovery or infiltration of the island of Borinquen (or Puerto Rico as it was later renamed) in
1493 by Spain resulted in the decimation of the native Taino population. With the loss of an immediate
source of cheap labor to work the fields for their sugar cane industry, they introduced African culture

Not necessarily the history but the story or interpretation of the past as perceived by the elite.
Gonzalez suggests that the recreation of the history of Puerto Rican society can be expressed
metaphorically as the construction of a building. As the new layers of the history or floors are added
the foundation becomes more and more obscured from view (Figueroa 9/15). As the higher levels
continued to build they were able to create the illusion of a pure, white society by rejecting and
denying their Taino and African heritage.
The United States gained Puerto Rico in 1898 through the Treaty of Paris, signed after the Spanish
American. Although the Puerto Rican community initially embraced U.S. intervention in 1898, hoping
that the land of the free would finally bring liberty to the island, the following years were full of
disillusionment. The sad reality was that the U.S. had no intention of ever giving up control of Puerto
Rico because of its strategic location in the Caribbean. The United States government tried to
Americanize the island. Which was acceptable for the island in the eyes of the elite until their power
was being threatened. The elite s on the island looked to the Jibaro as their symbol of national identity.

From the concrete structure of the Baroque period to the free form structure of the Modern period each
composer brings forth a new understanding and value to their time period. Within these pieces that
they creatively compose it brings new light and displays the culture of the time period. The composers
each have story to tell and has each creatively constructed their own works within the diameters of
their era. The music of the Baroque period was focused on having music be a tool of communication
to its listeners; conveying an arousal of emotions. Composers of this time thought to use this tool to
have this effect or one similar to it to correctly match music from the Roman time period. One

then the piano. As the bass trombone played it with dynamic and quick sounds the piano followed
behind with a soothing melody to fill in the gaps that the trombone could not fill creating a solid

Following after the Baroque period (1600 1750) and the Classical period (1750 1820) came the
Romantic period (1820 1900). The Romantic period gave birth to intense energy and passion to
composers to let loose their imagination to their works. This period allowed composers to put in their

being intertwined with their work some composers would put in folk songs and National Anthems as

15. Enzyme Linked Immunisirbent Assay
The major use of Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) is to titrate antibodies against
specific antigens (Crowther, 1995). This method involves an enzyme, which reacts with a colourless
substrate to form a coloured product, is covalently linked to a specific antibody that recognises a
specific antigen. If the antigen is present, the antibody enzyme complex will bind to it, and the
enzyme component of the antibody enzyme complex will catalyse the reaction which results in a
coloured product (Berg et al, 2002). The presence of the coloured product indicates that an antigen is
present. The ELISA, which is rapid and convenient, can detect less than a nanogram (10 9 g) of a
protein and can be performed with either polyclonal antibodies, which are antibodies that can
recognise multiple epitopes on any one antigen or monoclonal antibodies, which are antibodies that
can only detect one epitope on the antigen (Guo et al, 2006). However, the use of monoclonal
antibodies gives more reliable and accurate results due to their specificity as monoclonal antibodies
are very effective at acting as the primary antibody in an assay, or for detecting antigens within a
tissue. Also, they will usually result in reduced background staining compared to that of polyclonal
antibodies.
Indirect ELISA and direct ELISA Different types of ELISA s have been developed with modifications
to the basic steps. The key step with the ELISA assay is the direct or indirect detection of antigen by

How Do We Justify Warrantless Searches?
1) Law enforcement officers can conduct warrantless searches for a variety of reasons. Some of the
benefits are not having to wait for a judge of magistrate to sign off on it. If you can obtain consent
from an individual it must be voluntary and stay within its scope, as well as the person giving consent
must have the authority to do so. The search incident to lawful arrest exception is used every time an
officer makes an arrest, this is to ensure their safety, prevent escape, and prevent destruction of
evidence. This could be a body search, or a search within the area within a person s immediate control.
Police may use warrantless searches when exigent circumstances arise, such as when a warrant may
be impractical, useless, dangerous, or unnecessary. These include danger of physical harm to officer or
destruction of evidence, searches in hot pursuit of dangerous suspects, danger to a third person, and
driving while intoxicated. Police can also use the special needs beyond law enforcement exception for
public school searches, testing students for drugs, airport searches and searches of probationers and
parolees.

On March 25, 1931, With the Great Depression gripping the nation after the stock market crash of
1929, people jumped on to freight trains to travel from one city to another city in hope to search for
work. A group of whites and a group of blacks who are later called the Scottsboro boys got in a fight
on a train. The Scottsboro boys were defending themselves and they kicked the white group off in
Jackson County. Then, two women who were on the train were trying to avoid arrest therefore falsely
accused the nine black youths (who range from the age of thirteen to nineteen years old) of raping
them. The Scottsboro boys were then arrested with assault and rape charges added against all nine of
them after the allegations were made by Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. It was a rousing allegation in

20. Who Is Kitcher Inescapable Eugenics
I support the guidelines outlined by Kitcher for the use of genetic information because of their
responsible and ethical nature. I believe that future generations will benefit as a direct consequence of
these guidelines. I shall begin by defining eugenics as the study of human genetics to improve
inherited characteristics of the human race by the means of controlled selective breeding.
Chapter 8 of Kitcher s novel, Inescapable Eugenics, identifies past abuses of eugenics resulting from
inaccurate, misleading information; abuses that include dominant groups using eugenics to
discriminate against other undesirable groups.

By the conditions above, Kitcher states one main precondition. This precondition is the ability to form
a sense of self in order to set one s own personal values and to also take course of ones future path of
life . In Kitcher s point of view, the use of genetic information concerning embryos or fetuses is
permissible if and only if Fragile X, Lesch Nyhan, neurofibromatosis, and other similar severe
syndromes prevent even a modest quality of life . Under these circumstances, Kitcher justifies the
need for the use of genetic information to restore the ability to attain a decent quality of life and to
have the ability to satisfy desires that individual s value. Kitcher rejects relying on objective science, a
science that sometimes falsely labels diseases according to society views and biases. For example,
masturbation and homosexuality were falsely labeled as disorders. The outcomes of objective science
are unreliable and bring about social prejudices instead of promoting health and life .
A moral justification for genetic treatment is only as accurate as the justification of disease. In the
realms of objective science and the use of genetic testing, Kitcher argues that the basis for terminating
a pregnancy due to a severe syndrome can also lead to the basis for termination due to an undesired
sex or possibly even homosexuality. Ultimately, Kitcher supports only a minimalist approach to the

22. Destinee Game Analysis
As the striker stepped back to take the penalty kick, I planted my feet on the ground. I watched in
anticipation as she ran up to the ball and watched it fly towards the goal in slow motion, guessing
which direction it will go. Though I have played goalkeeper for 10 years, nothing I did then would
have changed the motion of the ball soaring towards the goal. Only the hard work I had done in the
weeks prior could affect it, because the goalkeeper in goal was a player I coached.
I started coaching for AYSO recreational league soccer in my freshman year, as an assistant to a
former coach of mine, Wayne. Wayne understood my passion and knowledge of the game, and I was
more than happy to help him and his team, specifically his goalkeeper, Destinee. ... Show more

The team had games every weekend, and I saw every weekend how much the time I had put in for
Destinee had made her better and better every week. Of course none of her progress would be possible
without her hardworking attitude and commitment to training, but I still developed a sense of pride in
Destinee.
Finally, in one of the last games of the season, Destinee had a clear cut opportunity to show her
progress. It was an important game, and the team was winning by one goal. The referee called a
penalty kick, and Destinee had to make the save to keep her team ahead. I watched her get ready for
the shot the way I taught her and thought about how she had told me that penalty kicks were
impossible. The shot was taken, and Destinee made a diving save to the corner to deny the goal. As I
heard sighs of relief on my side of the field and loud groans on the other, I realized I was the loudest
one cheering. It was great seeing Destinee excel in something that she could not imagine attempting
only a month ago.
From this experience I learned that contributing to your community, however selfless the contribution,
has a reward in itself when you know that you have helped someone else. I felt proud of Destinee and
myself, and I still coach the team whenever

A variety of lessons are taught to Scout and the reader in this award winning novel. To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about a young girl named Jean Louise Finch, or more commonly
known as Scout, growing up in 1930s Alabama, USA, with her father, Atticus, and brother, Jem. As
she faces challenges, she is given guidance by many people around her. Her and the reader are taught
how to communicate properly with people, how respect is given and gotten, and finally, equality
among everyone. The majority of these lessons (ignoring the misleading ones) are valuable and should
be remembered by everyone, age aside. They can help us grow as a person and become more

ten dollars. (Lee 162) Sykes is determined to help a man in need and Scout and the reader grasp that
you should always try to help a friend in need since they might need all the help they can get.
Secondly, Jem Finch, Scout s brother, teaches a lesson about how to handle her family. Scout wants to
invite Walter Cunningham over, but her Aunt Alexandra calls him trash and refuses to let Scout have
him over. Scout asks if the answer would be different if he was related, but Alexandra says the answer

25. My Writing Of A College Level Writing Course
At the beginning of the term, I came into this class not feeling very confident about my writing. I had
taken writing classes in the past, but none to the extent of a college level writing course. One of the
skills that I found I lacked the most was my vocabulary. While my writing structure was often not a
problem my writing did not sound as sophisticated as it could be. I occasionally used a thesaurus but
this would often cause problems as sometimes the words would not quite agree with the meaning of
my sentence. Throughout the term the one thing that helped me the most with this problem were the
workshops. As my peers corrected my paper they helped me to come up with more intelligent words
to get my point across to the reader. I believe that without the inclusion of these workshops my essays
would not have been as cleanly written. For upcoming classes one aspect of writing that I would like
to focus on is my ability to stay on topic. A lot of the time I tend to become so engulfed in one
reasoning for my argument that my mind begins to wander elsewhere. Ultimately my essay structure
will suffer because of this, so in order to stay more focused I want to start making outlines before I
write out my essays. With an outline it will be easier for me to stay on topic since I will have a
structure to follow. Also by having an outline I can find my quotes and compose my topic sentences
ahead of time, making it easier for me to see if my ideas will fit well together. This will also

How a Story Changes During Recycling
Dôjôji in setsuwa, illustrated scroll and Noh play

Devastated by a young monk who refused to have a relationship with and ran away from her, a woman
turned into serpent, chased the monk into a temple and finally destroyed him even though he hid
himself carefully under the big temple bell . This is the summary of the Dōjōji legend, a story which
has been recycled many times through history. Being one of the most popular themes in Japanese arts
and literature, it appeared in numerous versions and has been adapted to a wide variety of media. In
this paper, I will look into three of them Setsuwa, illustrated scroll and Noh play and make some

On the other hand, the woman is depicted as evil, lustful, and furious when rejected. In her essay,
Susan Blakeley Klein attributes this extremely negative view of women to one possible function of the
setsuwa: a cautionary tale specifically addressed to monks and priests to persuade them to avoid
women and exclude them from the realm of the spiritual .
The Dôjôji Engi Emaki
The Dōjōji Engi Emaki is an illustrated narrative scroll which was made in the Muromachi period
based on the earlier versions of the Dôjôji story. It is now a national treasure in the possession of
Dôjôji temple, Wakayama. This kind of illustrated scroll was often used in a medieval performance art
called etoki 絵解き, in which a performer displays the scroll to his/her audience while explaining the
illustrations and narrating the story. Even today, you can still enjoy a live performance given by
monks in the Dôjôji temple, though the scroll they use is a variant of the Engi Emaki produced early
in the twentieth century.
Although being based on the earlier setsuwa versions of the Dôjôji story, the Dôjôji Engi Emaki is
more like an independent work. It consists of four major parts: illustrations that depict the story;
Monogatari, the opening part that designates the time, places, actors and backgrounds; serifu, the lines
of speech uttered by the characters themselves; etoki lines, the narrations given by the explainer. The
verbal narration is

Infertility is the incapability or failure conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse or due
to an impairment a person s capacity to reproduce either as an individual or with his/her partner. While
infertility can cause issues in men and women, women are more susceptible to having issues
conceiving naturally. 1 in 8 women (or 12% of married couples) have trouble getting pregnant or
sustaining a pregnancy (2006 2010 National Survey of Family Growth, CDC). There is a process in
which three stages such as ovulation, fertilization, and implantation that a women s body must go
through to get pregnant. When there are issues in these stages, infertility is diagnosed and examined
by a doctor therefore, making it hard to conceive a baby naturally. Throughout this paper, I will
explain three common causes of infertility in females like endometriosis, sexual transmitted diseases,
and poor nutrition. In the story The Handmaid s Tale, by Margaret Atwood, women are infertile
because of pollution, STD s, and radiation. If in fact, radiation caused the women of Gilead to be
infertile it could possible because the radiation caused a chemical or hormonal imbalance. With that
being said, the world we live in today, the leading causes of infertility in the U.S. is endometriosis.
Infertile women are 6 to 8 times more likely to have endometriosis than fertile women (Verkauf BS).

With that in mind, I decided to simply focus on the data needed to verify my rather straightforward
hypothesis, that the special pieces have less visual contrast than the standard ones in general. There are
two attributes, as evident from the hypothesis, that I would need to know for each artifact: its specialty
whether the piece has special or standard decoration and its visual contrast. Given the visual nature of
both attributes, I decided that the only data I would need to collect are pictures of my artifacts. Next, I
needed to decide how I would analyze the photos in order to extract the two attributes, specialty and
contrast, so that I can test my hypothesis. A way of classifying specialty was determined by me as
such: while the standard pieces have decorations

30. Developing Compassion Essay
a merciless event, it is selfish without even realizing it. Doing good deeds does not make us a good
individual, it just makes us decent. The benefits of generosity for both our physical and mental health
are outstanding. generosity reduces stress, supports one s physical health, enhances one s sense of
purpose, and helps fight depression, it has also been shown to increase one s lifespan because all the
health benefits of not being stressed. You may think you are being selfless, but you are also benefiting
yourself in a way you did not know about. Developing compassion increases our happiness. In an
experiment published in Science by Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton, they gave
money to; two sets of groups, one that spent money on themselves and the other spent it on other
people. It was found that the people who bought presents for others showed an increase in happiness,
this was even the case with children giving treats to others. We are using an unselfish event and
making for an ego boost. However, by doing so we need to become conscious of the world around us.
As we develop more of an awareness we become more concerned about what is going on around us.
Therefore, we carry guilt for simple things like throwing a cigarette on the ground, we may feel guilty
for a bit, but we can always change our actions and help the world around us. Compassion is simple
and uses common sense, it is humble and straightforward. Being compassionate is difficult for those

Imagine running a business without a cash register. Imagine how unorganized, chaotic, and difficult it
would be to handle money through every employee without the cash register. This is no longer a
problem for any business anymore thanks to James Ritty. The cash register was invented in 1879 by
James Ritty, a saloonkeeper in Dayton, Ohio. (thecorememory.com). The prototype machine had a
large, clock like face and a row of keys for entering amounts from 5 cents to 95 cents (by fives) and
from $1 to $9. A mechanism inside the machine recorded total sales. (americanhistory.si.edu). This
was how the first cash register worked, and was the base model for many more to come. He created
this invention because he believed that his employees were stealing money from his saloon, and with
the cash register being invented, they no longer can. Finally, the cash register was the most important
invention in American history, due to its major impact on businesses around the world. After the cash
register was invented, it became a huge success. Before, few business owners actually knew if they

4 The building blocks of successful leadership pipeline
Despite the benefits listed above, leadership succession remains a cause of concern for a number of
organisations. DDI s Global Leadership Forecast from 2011 showed how only 38% of participating
leaders said the quality of leadership within their organisation is either very good or excellent. More
importantly, only 18% of HR professionals in the same survey felt the organisations have a strong
bench to respond to future needs. In order to make the most of the leadership pipeline model,
organisations must also focus on the following four elements.
A simple system with buy in from the senior leadership team
The focus should be on creating a clear and simple pipeline framework. The more complex the
program, the more it risks failing at some point. If the organisation is able to reduce the bureaucracy
required to run the system, then it ensures the system is based on clarity and effectiveness. One way to
remove complexity from the system is by narrowing its focus. The processes used must be focused on
the actual objectives and needs of the organisation. There s no reason to add broadness by creating a
far reaching process when there is no need for it. The scope is at its best when it doesn t focus on
every person within the organisation, but narrows the effort down towards a few key players.
Furthermore, it s important to ensure the system is flexible enough to respond the changing needs
within the organisation.
