Once John is booked he will be allowed one phone call and then incarcerated until the
arraignment where he will appear before the judge. When he is before the judge, the judge will
decide if there was probable cause for his arrest and decide whether or not he will be allowed to
post bail, and if so, the amount. Now, we move on to cover and compare the preliminary hearing
and the grand jury process to establish probable cause for the felony charges. A preliminary
hearing is used to determine if there is enough evidence against John to go to trial. A good way
to look at the preliminary hearing is to think of it as a mini trial. It is where the judge will allow

prosecutors have enough evidence to convince a jury that John is guilty. During a preliminary

Peoples and Empires Throughout history there have been a multitude of different empires to rise
up and conquer land, along with the people inhabiting that land. More often than not, these empires
fell. Whether the empire was quickly abolished, or it maintained power for decades, most of them
were over thrown. Anthony Pagden, who at the time of publication was a history professor at John
Hopkins, wrote the book Peoples and Empires in 2003 to explain the history of the once Great
European Empires . These empires included, but are not limited to, the French, the Spanish, the
British, and the Roman Empire. One major idea of the content focuses on how these particular
empires justified their conquering, not only to themselves, but also to their followers and the

affects the lining of the lungs and the ability to breathe. Lung cancer is the number one killer of men

According to the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) the researchers
identified a large region on human chromosome 6 that conferred greater lung cancer risk in
families with many affected individuals. Subsequent painstaking analysis to pinpoint the source
of the elevated risk now has paid off with the identification of the precise culprit, a gene called
RGS17. Researchers conducted fine mapping of the suspect region of chromosome 6 in
members of families in which five or more individuals over multiple generations were diagnosed
with lung cancer. The region contains approximately 100 genes. Precise computational analysis
uncovered similar variants in the DNA sequence for members of the families with lung cancer.
These variants, called single nucleotide polymorphisms (or SNPS) directed the researchers to the
RGS17 gene. The conclusions of this analysis are that RGS17 plays a major role in lung cancer
susceptibility, and individuals who carry the higher risk version of this gene have an increased
susceptibility to lung cancer when exposed to environmental risk factors, such as smoking. While
the research showed that RGS17 is an important gene for lung cancer susceptibility in families with
