Mehmed The Conqueror And The Ottoman Sultans
Introduction Mehmed the Conqueror and the Ottoman sultans who followed him desired Topkapi
Palace to convey the power, wealth, and religiousness of the Ottoman household. Unlike many other
works of art and architecture, Topkapi Palace was constantly expanding. An excellent example of this
is the Arabic inscription on The Imperial Gate in Topkapi Palace. The gate itself was constructed in
1478. The tughra below it belonged Sultan Abdulaziz, a nineteenth century Ottoman sultan.
Introduction to the Ottomans. In 1453, Mehmed the Conqueror, an Ottoman Turk, succeeded in
conquering Constantinople, the capital of the former Byzantine empire. In 1460, he decided to
commision a palace. By 1478, the palace was complete and was named Topkapi Palace. ... Show more

Topkapi palace displays the wealth of the ottoman household. Porcelain can be found in the palace.
Also there are jade colored plates in the palace, but for a very morbid reason: the sultans were always
in fear of getting assassinated, and they thought the plates would change color if the food was
poisonous. Inside the palace there also was the Topkapi dagger. The topkapi dagger was a dagger
made out of emerald. There was also the spoonmaker s diamond, which is one of the largest cut
diamonds in the world, according to Britannica Academic. Another example of the wealth of topkapi
palace is the size of it. Topkapi palace is 172 acres.
Through the size of topkapi palace it exuded power. However, it was not because of it s size implies to
Gulru Necipolgu, an expert on topkapi palace, but because of how hard it was to even catch a glipse of
the sultan. The sultan s aloofness made him seem more powerful and mysterious. This was the
ultimate purpose of topkapi. Necipolgu argues that What seems to us haphazard and modest [Topkapi
Palace] is, in actuality, what they [Ottoman sultans] considered to be a symbol of

Terror Dominates Our Perceptions Of The French Revolution
Terror dominates our perceptions of the french Revolution. Terror was a brief but deadly period where
Robespierre, the Committee of Public Safety and the Revolutionary Tribunals, condemned thousands
of people to die on the guillotine. The Reign of Terror was not driven by one man, one body,or one
policy; It was shape by different forces and factors. The Reign of Terror was certainly the most violent
period of the French Revolution. Between the years of 1793 and 1794 more than 50,000 people were
killed for suspected counter revolutionary activity or so called crimes against liberty One third of this
number died under the falling blade of the guillotine.
At the end of the 18 century the glorious kingdom of Europe would face the mighty foe.The power of
its own people. One man would rise to inspire the nation to cause the descend of a reluctant King and,
a hated Queen. A new Republic would be born in blood, the blood of the French Revolution. Because
of the war the king was fighting, the government were bankrupt. With food prices on the raise and the
king with his hand out the people needed resolution. Robespierre enlightening the French people with
his idea of a new Revolution. On January 20,1793, the French government, led by the radical
Jacobins, ordered that Louis the XVI be executed for treason The jacobin leader executed the

Negative Effects Of Rejection
INTRODUCTION: According to Downey and Feldman (1996), the basic need to belong, the desire to
achieve acceptance and to avoid rejection is widely acknowledged to be a powerful motivational
drive. Social rejection occurs when an individual is deliberately excluded from a social relationship or
social interaction for social rather than practical reasons. A person can be rejected on an individual
basis or by an entire group of people. For example it can be missing an invitation to a friend s party, a
refusal of a job opportunity, the end of a romantic relationship, or the reluctance of a stranger to talk to
you etc. Further, rejection can be active, bullying, teasing or ridiculing, or passive, ignoring a person
or giving silent treatment . The experience of being rejected is subjective for the recipient, and it can
be perceived when it is not actually present. However, one s perspective on experiencing rejection and
the interpretation of the experience rejection vary to a great degree. Since humans are social beings,
some level of rejection is an inevitable part of life. Rejection becomes a problem when it is prolonged
or consistent, when the relationship is important, or when the individual is highly ... Show more

When environmental or interpersonal cues are interpreted as rejection, the high rejection sensitivity
individual actually experiences feelings of rejection, which are likely to provoke an affective or
behavioural overreaction such as aggressive behaviour, depression, or socially inappropriate efforts to
prevent, or in some way obviate the rejection (Ayduk Mendoza Denton, 2000). These efforts, in turn,
often provoke rejection from the target of the behaviour, and so, the anxiety becomes a reality for the
rejection sensitive person. Additional experiences of rejection serve to prolong the expectations of
rejection, thus maintaining the rejection sensitive dynamic (Mitchell, Downey, Peake, Rodriguez,

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening Analysis
In the modern day world there is an ongoing argument whether love is good or bad in nature. Stopping
by Woods on a Snowy Evening is a simple poem that was not originally written to create an
underlying message of love, but due to the popularity of Robert Frost s work it has and still is being
critiqued comprehensively. This paper will prove that Robert Frost is not referring to loving another
person in particular but the narrator s peaceful surroundings in the woods. Although, the literary
techniques used in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening create a peaceful environment for the
reader, the stop in the wilderness creates a dilemma with the narrator s state of mind.
Having considered the case of love the narrator is feeling, it is evident of what is being adored in this
poem. The title alone alerts the reader of the place, setting and the basic theme of the story. The woods
seem to exhibit a calmness and tranquility that encourages the protagonist to stop his journey and rest
and in reality, the wilderness represents madness and darkness in the world. Frost opens the first
stanza with the self conscious narrator thinking to himself, Whose woods these are I think I know. His
house is in the village though (1 2). The man s insecurity naturally causes him to be uneasy but the
solitude in the woods creates the affection that awes him. Since this story is told from the narrator s
point of view, the reader can now infer that the protagonist is not thinking clearly due to

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Lightships
Lightships are manned seamarks anchored at a specific point of a river, generally a shallow one. Fixed
into place by a mushroom shaped anchor, these small ships (rarely above 50 tons) would initially use
large lanterns affixed atop the main mast. Their main advantage is that they could be placed in areas
where it was impossible for lighthouses to act as efficient seamarks. Their main disadvantage,
especially the early ones, is that turbulent waters could slightly shift the anchor and thus the ship s
positioning (Talbot 1913, pp. 241 42). In the worst case scenario, the chains could snap, leaving the
ship in a dire position. However, introduced in the early 19th century were numerous lighting
inventions (Clarke 2016, pp. 14, 42) as well as mooring technologies using iron, which could anchor a
vessel 12 to 14 times the tonnage of the largest lightship (Clarke 2016, pp. 50 56), made them
increasingly reliable over time. Ubiquitous to seafarers, their offshore position meant that lightships
were out of eyesight of the majority of the population, which explains why they went largely
unnoticed, even by most economists and historians including Coase, who studied lighting services.
Yet, lightships featured prominently in the frequently cited 1834 Report from the Select Committee on
Lighthouses. In fact, of the 55 lights in England, 13 were provided by floating lights (House of
Commons 1834, p. VI). As such, lightships were an important contributor to lighting services. What

Benefits Of Farming In The Southern Colonies
The weather and land in the southern colonies was ideal for growing crops and ideal for farming. The
climate in the southern colonies had plenty of rain and the weather was warm most of the time. Slaves
were able to work all year long due to the climate. The plantation owners were able to produce large
amounts of tobacco and cotton. Having slaves do the work gave plantation owners free labor, which
made them rich Southern plantation owners. Without slavery the plantation owners would not have
become rich and they would not have had the money to purchase more slaves. In the Northern
Colonies the climate did not allow for farming all year long. The North needed slaves with multiple
skills that for slave labor was much less due to the type of work that was being done in the North.
Some of the benefits and disadvantages to enslaved Africans that came from living in the South or in
the North are listed below. In the South growing rice was more difficult and tough than growing crops
in the North ( Carson, p. 76). More slaves died in the South trying to grow rice because of the weather
conditions, which led to other disease that killed them ( Carson, ... Show more content on

This was the beginning of reprograming them to become part of their new environment. Because the
Africans were now in a land where they were intermingled with slaves from other cultures they had to

adjust to and learn how to get a long with each other and their masters and create rituals and religious
customs that allowed them to survive (Carson, p. 88). Africans learned the European language, learned
how to navigate the new geography, formed relationships and family units, embraced Christianity into
their rituals and remained strong in order to endure the hardships of slaver ( Carson, p.

Essay On Ww2 Propaganda
During World War II, governments would create propaganda in hopes of inspiring or convincing
citizens in their country to make a contribution to the war effort. Most of the propaganda was related
to the need of the factory workers in the factories and the factories needed as many people as possible
to help make materials necessary for the war. Therefore, the techniques used to persuade their citizens
to join the war movement was through different fonts, pop of colors, and images to catch the reader s
eyes. The government used different fonts in attempt to give a slogan that would resonate with any
citizen that read the propaganda. Even though slogans are useful, different fonts allows an attraction to

This enables the audience to look at the colors, then realize the words and comprehend their meaning.
The government intended to make certain words stand out as their citizens read the propaganda so
they could look at the vibrant colored words to convince them to take action. Then, citizens would
consider helping their country during the war and actually go work in the factories to make necessities
for the war. While citizens think the government appreciates their efforts, the materials given during
war are important to win the war. Lastly, when images are used in the propaganda, it helps the
audience understand what the government needs from their citizens to be part of the war effort. While
vibrant colored words emphasize specific words, images present concepts that can not be told in a few
words. These images can inspire citizens through the use of colors or making certain objects bigger
than it really is in real life. Therefore, it would bring emphasis on who is needed or what is need from
the citizens that the government is attempting to recruit to take part of the war

relaxation of the cells within the frame. We used to think of LDL as awful LDL cholesterol so lower
levels of LDL have been considered an excellent signal.
The LDL cholesterol inside of HDL and LDL particles is precisely the identical, it s just that, for the
maximum part, HDL is wearing it in one path and LDL is sporting it in the opposite route. The reason
why LDL were dubbed horrific and HDL has been dubbed excellent is that numerous epidemiological
studies most famously, the Framingham heart study told us that excessive LDL levels had been related
to a better chance of heart assault, and that high HDL levels have been related to a lower risk of heart
assault.
We used to suppose that HDL changed into desirable as it acted like a rubbish truck, clearing evil
cholesterol out of our bodies, and we used to assume that LDL was awful because it burrowed its
manner into our coronary arteries, depositing evil cholesterol there forming plaques and causing
coronary heart attacks.

Themes And Symbolism In The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath uses many literary devices to convey her purpose in The Bell Jar such as symbolism. The
Bell Jar itself is used as symbolic representation of the emotional state Esther is in. The glass jar
distorts her image of the world as she feels trapped under the glass. It represents mental illness; a
confining jar that descends over her mind and doesn t allow her to live and think freely. Symbols of
life and death pervade The Bell Jar. Esther experiences psychological distress which is a major motif
in the novel. The death of Esther s father and the relationship with her mother is a possible reason for
her illness. Sylvia Plath expresses the difficulties Esther faces and parallels her struggle with
depression and illustrates it using various symbols such as a fig tree, mirrors, beating heart and a bell
jar throughout the novel.
Symbolism is heavily used throughout the Bell Jar. A fig tree becomes a symbol for the life choices
Esther had made. The fig represents a different lifestyle. Esther wants all the figs but she knows she
can only choose one, so struggling with what choice to make, the figs all rot. Her, being unable to
choose one fig shows Esther s indecisiveness. She took too long to choose a fig, which lead them all
the rot. The fig tree comes from a story Esther read early in the novel that she instantly connected to. A
Jewish man and Catholic nun who met under a fig tree, which is twist on the biblical story of the
Garden of Eden. This story holds importance to

Types Of A Secondary Fermentation
The process:
The brawlers are filled with water and the malts are added once the temperature begins to rise and it is
all left to boil. Once boiled, the hops are added. It is then left to boil for around 80 minutes. After 80
minutes the brew is left to cool until reaches 25C then it must be transferred to the formentor. Once in
the formentor, the yeast is added and the formentor closed for around two weeks until all the sugar
compounds from the malts have been devoured by the yeast, and the alcohol content has been added.
The brew is then transferred to a keg, where sugar is added, this allows the brew to go through what is
called a secondary fermentation. This increase alcohol percentage as well as giving the brew the
common bubbly beer qualities.
Process breakdown:
Malts are the source of beer s colour and taste as well as the sugar compound which feeds the yeast
and gives beer its alcohol content. Barley is the most common source used, often with a touch of rye
or wheat, to add a fuller flavour. All barley needs to be dried and roasted, and it is the mount of
roasting with offers the light to dark ale ratio. Longer roasted, darker, barley is used to make darker or
fuller tasting beers, like that of Stouts. Less roasted barley, however, is used in some ales as it is
lighter in both colour and flavour, like that of blonde or pale ales. Different malts, such as wheat or
rye, give different and distinct flavours to the beer. Rye is known for its light and refreshing addition

Heteronormativity In Let It Go
The Disney cinematic universe is riddled with an obscene heteronormativity that appears to be
subverted in Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck s, Frozen. The entirety of this film removes itself from the
particular expected narrative of its counterparts. This is particularly clear in the title song of the film,
Let it Go. Sung by queer icon Idina Menzel, this song seems to divulge from the implications of
heteronormativity and showcase clear insinuations of a coming out narrative . Using the works of
Somerville, Freud, Wittig, and Butler this paper will aim to follow the protagonist through the song
and her queer narrative. Unbound by the typical narrative of heterosexual love and freed by self
expression, this song allows for a clear queer reading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

s parents and society. She sings, don t let them in, don t let them see, be the good girl you always have

what is accepted as normal by a society. Elsa has hidden away and refused to let people see within her,
she hides so as not to be presented as freakish or monstrous. She is unable to fully present herself in a
way that would be viewed as normal or expected so she instead removes herself from the view of her
society. Butler also mentions the concept of the heterosexual matrix and the expectations of a
heteronormative society. Elsa lives in a society that instructs her to hide the aspects of herself that do
not conform to the expected norms, she alters the perception of herself so as to fit into the mold of the
heterosexual matrix. She escapes it only by accepting aspects of herself that are non normalized and
inherently odd. After escaping this society she realizes the freedom in full expression of self, I m never

Imperialism Relations Essay
Imperialism relations are also decided by force today, and the Europeans, the Americans and others
have to constantly defend their peace loving community. Every state sees itself threatened by the
others, and each claims that it only defends itself against the others. If it were true that all states are
merely defending themselves, then they would be able to leave each other alone. The rights which one
state ascribes to itself against another state are defended. This is an important point: the interests that
states have in each other brings the states into conflict with each other not the desire to be left alone.
So one has to explain how a conflict exists in ordinary buying and selling, and it is insufficient to
explain the conflict between states by resorting to images from the past. It is true that the Spanish stole
the Mayans gold, that colonialism was a form of robbery. Someone who accuses today s governments
of robbery actually accuses them of engaging in conflicts that do not fit the world ... Show more

Therefore, each state s basis of existence is always too small. Now here is the reason why states
always turn to the outside world: the growth that the state promotes has a border in the reach of its
own power. The state always promotes growth policies, but the country s borders then present a
limited market, a limited availability of raw materials and resources, a limited potential labor force;
The power that licenses capital, which creates the economic system in the first place, is itself a limit to
its growth within its limited range. Under capitalist states, a relationship of mutual recognition comes
into existence so that one state can use the other, because the other state calculates the same way, only

The Consequences And Effects Of Safe Driving Saves Lives

Safe Driving Saves Lives
Safe driving seems to be very hard for us now. There so many accidents now due to the lack of us
being careful and not following the rules. We may think what we are doing isn t bad, or we haven t
been caught yet, so we must be good at it. The reality is that we need to think twice about these things
before something happens that can change our life or the life of someone else entirely. We may think
we can control the situation, but in reality, things can happen so fast that we wouldn t even be able to
react to them. The main reasons that cause fatalities and crashes are, driving under the influence,
speeding, texting while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt while driving. It doesn t matter how long
we have done it or if we haven t been caught, when it does happen it can be a very bad outcome and
can happen in a split second. I personally feel that these things have really become a major factor and
find it incumbent that something should be done to stop them from happening.
An article I read titled, Can Automation and Tougher Laws Save Lives? by Ellen Kennerly talks about
some of the causes of fatalities and crashes we tend to have so much of now. Kennerly states, Nearly
half of the 2015 fatalities involved an unbelted passenger or driver and about one third were alcohol
related. Wow, that is a big number. This quote clearly shows us that wearing our seatbelt can save us

Types Of Slackers Essay
When it comes to school every student behaves differently in the classroom. Once I reached high
school I realized that some students cared too much and some students didn t care at all; when it came
to their education. Everyone knows someone who would always come to class but never do anything
or someone who never missed a day of class and always participate in class discussions. During my
years in high school I ve observed several types of students and how they behaved in class. In my
opinion, most students can be categorized as slackers, over achievers, or standards. Slackers are the
students who almost never come to class or doing any assignments. These type of students usually just
enough work to barely pass they class. A slacker never participates in any group or class activities. I
knew a kid in high school who was a slacker, his name was Billy. He was a cool kid but sucked when
it came down to getting assignments done. Billy barely came to class and when he did all he would do
was day dream and play games on his phone. He almost never turned in any assignments and would
always pass exams with a D average. Billy eventually dropped out of ... Show more content on

assignments to boost her grade a little. She d always turned in her assignments on time and was
perfectly content with getting a C on anything. When it came to group activities, Monica usually only
did a section of it and let the other members handle the rest. She graduated with our class, but there
was nothing special about her grades. Standards are typically good students and only do what is

Basic Military Training
We all have gone to our mom when we were little to ask her where dad goes each day. When she had
told us that dad had gone to work, most of us would want to know where he works. For me, my dad
was in the Air Force. It wasn t till later in my life that I learn that I have a long list of family, including
grandparents and numerous uncles. All my life I have wanted to join my family tradition and join the
Air Force. Before I join and I would like to know more about what I am enlisting to do, therefore I
would like to know what the benefits are. I have decided to do my Seiner project on that fact so I may
learn as well as share with you the benefits. This paper will start with the questions that I would like to

The Stages Of Grief By Elisabeth Kubbler Ross And David...
Five Stage of Grief The thought of death and dying for many is just that, a mere thought that lives in
the back of ones mind. However, for many others these thoughts are a painful reality. How individuals
navigate through death and dying is a very personal journey that cannot be easily predicted. It is
important to understand that there is neither a set time line nor right or wrong way to process the loss
of life. The book On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stage Loss
by Elisabeth Kübbler Ross and David Kessler, aims to help individuals experiencing loss better
understand the coping emotions associated with the grieving process through identifying five common
stages of grief.
Denial
Kübbler Ross and Kessler (2005) described denial in this instance as a symbolic term versus literal
rejection of information. In this case denial may look more like disbelief of shocking information.
Denial is the minds way of protecting itself against painful and shocking thoughts, feelings, and
perceptions and can be experienced by both healthy and sick persons (Kübbler Ross Kessler, 2005).
The minds rejection of painful and harmful information is a form of avoidance coping, which allows
individuals to integrate cognitively dissonant information at a more manageable pace (Charles Kamen,
2012). Through denial one may be able to unconsciously manage their feelings about the given
situation.
Impact of Denial Denial can give individuals the ability to let

Jock Sturges Essay
Jock Sturges, born in 1947 in New York, is an American photographer whose works, alongside Sally
Mann or Joseph Szabo, may be one of the most intimate portraits of adolescence and youth. Interested
in the medium since the mid 60s, Sturges educated himself at the Malboro College in Vermont (1974),
where he studied Perceptual Psychology and Photography, later continued at the San Francisco Art
Institute (1985). Even though he started to exhibit in the 70s, helding several displays throughout the
next decade, his serious recognition came in the early 90s. Surrounded by both broad acclaim and
many controversies, Sturges published his first book The Last Day of Summer (1992), followed by
Radiant Identities and Evolution of Grace (both 1994). Some of his most important exhibitions of the

Examples Of Power Struggle In Frankenstein
Throughout Frankenstein, the growing strife between Victor and the monster is representative of a
class war. This strife is due to the monster and Victor s conflicting interests and results in a power
struggle between the two. This power struggle is similar to one we see in real life, between the
bourgeoisie and the working class, as they have a similar power dynamic (Wilson 116). Since the
bourgeoisie are credited with the creation of the working class and have control over many aspects of
their life, they have immense power over the workers, yet the workers have the strength in numbers to
rise up and resist the bourgeoisie. This power struggle reached a peak during the time of the Victorian
Era, including increasing strife between both the bourgeoisie and the ... Show more content on

This resentment can clearly be seen in Frankenstein, it starts with the monster resenting Victor for
creating him and creating him in a way that makes humans despise him (Shelley 85). This resentment
against Victor continues to grow, especially after Victor refuses to build a companion for the monster.
This is the brink for the monster and is when he truly begins to wage a class war upon Victor. Victor is
also resentful of the monster. Thoughts of the monster have plague Victor throughout the entire novel,
even when he was under the impression that the monster had been destroyed, during the winter after
the monster s creation (39). Victor s resentment continues to grow as the monster begins to make his
presence know in murdering Victor s family and friends. Like the workers, the monster is willing to do
anything to improve his conditions, even if it involves waging a class war upon those high up on the
social hierarchy. Considering that the monster and Victor become alienated throughout the novel, it is
clear to see that they represent a class

First Impressions of Elizabeth and Darcy First impressions in the novel Pride and Prejudice play a
crucial role. Whether they be initially correct then changed because of the views of others like Jane
Bennet s first impression of Charles Bingley. Or whether they be initially very wrong then slowly
changed throughout the novel into a more accurate interpretation of the character. They almost provide
the basis for which the story is structured upon. The novel progresses as the reader s (and the
characters) views of each character change. This is most evident in the relationship between Elizabeth
Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth Bennet being a pseudo main character although there ...

initially Elizabeth does find Fitzwilliam to be tall and handsome. This leads Elizabeth to have a dislike
of Fitzwilliam which then will make way for her current attitude towards him during this point in the

Return on equity followed this new trend with a 7% difference between the number one and two spot.

Can Tita be considered a victim or a vanquisher?
In Laura Esquivel s novel Como Agua Para Chocolate Esquivel explores the relationship between a

Mama Elena is the chief antagonist in this novel who, instead of loving and caring for her daughter,

Tita s fear and her dislike towards her mother is also clarified in the film when Tita, as a child, hides
behind Nacha s apron as soon as Mama Elena enters the kitchen. Tita s resistance to Mama Elena s
cruel demands are evident again when even after Mama Elena scolds her and orders her to stay away
from Pedro, she is still happy knowing that Pedro still loves her:
Después de estas amenazantes palabras de Mama Elena, Tita procuró estar lo más alejada de Pedro
que pudo. Lo que le fue imposible fue borrar de su rostro una franca sonrisa de satisfacción. Desde ese
momento la boda tuvo para ella otro significado
Tita s thoughts shows how, despite her fear of Mama Elena, she still attempts to gain her right to
marry and she is secretly happy about Pedro marrying Rosaura just to be near her. Despite Mama
Elena s intentions to break Tita s heart by making her watch the person she loves getting married to
her sister, Tita completely changes the meaning of this wedding to something that makes her love for
Pedro grow stronger. This is also portrayed in the film when Tita s smile remains even after Mama
Elena scolds her. The contrast in Mama Elena and Tita s behaviour is conveyed when Tita thinks about
what it would be like to have her mother s strength:
En ese momento pensó en lo bueno que sería tener la fuerza de Mamá Elena. Ella mataba así, de tajo,
sin piedad. Bueno, aunque pensándolo bien, no.

Why I Get An A In Geography
There are many reasons why I should get an A in Geography. First, I am new to High School and not
used to the changes that come along with it. Another reason is that I have been very open minded and I
have tried my best to learn and understand the material being taught. Lastly, I have been very busy
balancing everything, and I have still made education my highest priority.
The first reason why I should get an A in this class is because this is my first year of high school and I
am new to everything the classes, the people, and the business. And yes, I realize that there are 900
other freshmen who are new to it also, but it has been hard for me, I m not good at adjusting to

How Does Steinbeck Present The Theme Of Loneliness In Of...
Kensa Fradd Walker Of Mice and Men The Main Themes So far in the book, Of Mice and Men, John
Steinbeck has introduced three main themes dreams, loneliness/isolation, and
friendship/companionship. These three themes all link together in the way that most of the characters,
in Steinbeck s microcosm of society, dream of a friend to cure their loneliness. Whilst everyone on the
ranch dreams of a companion, George and Lennie dream of having their own ranch. They dream to
have this ranch so that no one can fire them and they can be their own boss. When they are talking in

Loneliness follows all of the characters except for George and Lennie, because they have each other.
Their dream of owning the farm is their way of breaking the pattern of loneliness. In addition to
dreams, humans long for human contact to give their lives meaning. The vast majority of the migrant
workers travel alone and Slim once says I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain t
no good. They don t have no fun. After a long time they get mean. Steinbeck reinforces the theme of
loneliness in subtle and not so subtle ways. Near the ranch, for example, is the town of Soledad. The
town s name, not accidentally, means solitude or alone . The others reactions to George and Lennie
traveling together reinforces that, in Steinbeck s world, traveling with someone else is unusual. When
George and Lennie arrive at the ranch, four other characters the boss, Candy, Crooks, and Slim all
comment on the suspicious nature of two guys traveling together. This

Hawking s A Briefer History
Steven Hawking s A Briefer History in Time tells a simplified story of the universe. Hawking s starts
out the book by going over the different type of cosmology that was held throughout history. He
mentions the beliefs that Aristotle, Copernicus, Galileo and other notable individuals held about the
universe. This discussion is used to segue into a brief description of the different theories, laws, and
ideas concerning the universe held by people today. Newton s laws of motion and gravity and Einstein
s theory of relativity are only some of the models that Hawking discusses. Thus, the main purpose of
Hawking s A Briefer History in Time is to inform the readers of the development in our understanding
of how the universe works. In his conclusion, Hawking s specifically includes the term Mind of God
(142). I believe that for Hawking, to understand the mind of God is to understand the workings of the
universe and our place in it. Hawking s A Briefer History of Time also asserts that it is possible to
know the mind of God. In essence, although, Hawking does not explicitly say that we can explain the
world without God, he does use the theories of others to question the existence of God. Although,
Hawking s discussion of the theories concerning the universe can be seen as contradictory to the idea
of an absolute God, the theories coincide and broaden my understanding of God.
Hawking s explanation of Newton s models portrays the universe as complex because of the relative

A machine politician in the old tradition, Daley will use patronage to control the Illinois state vote and
obtain tax breaks and zoning law favors for real estate interests and others that support him.
Although Daley remained popular and influential during his several terms, his administration was
marred by a number of political scandals, by civil rights disturbances, and by a riot at the 1968
Democratic convention. Daley was among John F. Kennedy s key supporters in the 1960 presidential
election, providing him with the delegates who helped him win a first ballot nomination and a massive
Chicago vote that delivered Illinois for Kennedy in his narrow victory over Richard M. Nixon. Daley
hosted the 1968 Democratic National Convention at President Lyndon B. Johnson s request. Daley s
national reputation was seriously tarnished as the result of violence between anti Vietnam War
demonstrators and Chicago police. Ironically, Daley had been a private critic of the Victnam War and
had urged Johnson to withdraw U.S. forces. In 1972, Daley was dealt another blow when the
Democratic National Convention refused to seat his Illinois delegation because of noncompliance with
new selection rules. In 1976, Jimmy Carter said that Daley s endorsement clinched his first ballot
nomination for the presidency, but Daley failed to deliver Illinois for Carter in the election.

How Food Waste Management Is Implemented On A Local Scale...
Waste is seen as a sign of human success, where the more waste that is generated the wealthier the
human population is (Bulkeley, H et al 2009). The world produces enough food to provide for twice
the number of the present population which is ironic looking at the global number of malnourished
people. Politically, the more we buy the better our economy will be, but finding the balance between
economic development and environmental sustainability is key to extending the social, cultural and
economic lives of things (Bulkeley, H et al 2009). Downs (1972) states that environmental problems
have a life cycle where there is an increase in people becoming motivated to make a change, but as
time goes on they lose interest and abandon all effort (Eden, S 2005). In this essay we will look at how
the human population needs to take responsible actions to help humanity and the environment. The
John McIntyre Conference Center is an example used to show how food waste management is
implemented on a local scale. It shows how much food waste Edinburgh University students discarded
without taking into consideration the future health and environmental hazards. The JMCC have taken
steps to ensure a level of education regarding food waste for the students and staff, as well as investing
in improved policies and equipment to limit wastage. We then go one step further and look at how the
Scottish Government has implemented sustainable policies for Edinburgh households and their
effectiveness.

The Endocrine System Essay
The endocrine system is a group of glands distributed throughout the human body. This group of
glands secretes substances called hormones. These hormones are dumping into the bloodstream (Shier,
Butler Lewis, 2009). The endocrine system does not have a single anatomic location. It is dispersed
throughout the human body. The final purpose of this process is to control, regulate, and coordinate
the functioning of the human body. Some body functions can be activated or inhibited by hormones,
which are secreted in very small quantities. The hormone related diseases may be due to hyper

Hyperthyroidism (too much hormone) may result Grave s disease. Symptoms include anxiety, rapid

The parathyroid glands are located in front of the base of the neck around the thyroid gland and

This hormone (parathyroid hormone) affects the bones, kidney, and intestine (Shier et al., 2009).
Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys (Shier et al., 2009). The adrenal glands
secrete hormones that increase heart rate, the force of cardiac muscle contraction, breathing rate,

According to Shier, Butler Lewis (2009) other glands that produce hormones and thus are parts of the

  • 2. Mehmed The Conqueror And The Ottoman Sultans Introduction Mehmed the Conqueror and the Ottoman sultans who followed him desired Topkapi Palace to convey the power, wealth, and religiousness of the Ottoman household. Unlike many other works of art and architecture, Topkapi Palace was constantly expanding. An excellent example of this is the Arabic inscription on The Imperial Gate in Topkapi Palace. The gate itself was constructed in 1478. The tughra below it belonged Sultan Abdulaziz, a nineteenth century Ottoman sultan. Introduction to the Ottomans. In 1453, Mehmed the Conqueror, an Ottoman Turk, succeeded in conquering Constantinople, the capital of the former Byzantine empire. In 1460, he decided to commision a palace. By 1478, the palace was complete and was named Topkapi Palace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Topkapi palace displays the wealth of the ottoman household. Porcelain can be found in the palace. Also there are jade colored plates in the palace, but for a very morbid reason: the sultans were always in fear of getting assassinated, and they thought the plates would change color if the food was poisonous. Inside the palace there also was the Topkapi dagger. The topkapi dagger was a dagger made out of emerald. There was also the spoonmaker s diamond, which is one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, according to Britannica Academic. Another example of the wealth of topkapi palace is the size of it. Topkapi palace is 172 acres. Through the size of topkapi palace it exuded power. However, it was not because of it s size implies to Gulru Necipolgu, an expert on topkapi palace, but because of how hard it was to even catch a glipse of the sultan. The sultan s aloofness made him seem more powerful and mysterious. This was the ultimate purpose of topkapi. Necipolgu argues that What seems to us haphazard and modest [Topkapi Palace] is, in actuality, what they [Ottoman sultans] considered to be a symbol of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Terror Dominates Our Perceptions Of The French Revolution Terror dominates our perceptions of the french Revolution. Terror was a brief but deadly period where Robespierre, the Committee of Public Safety and the Revolutionary Tribunals, condemned thousands of people to die on the guillotine. The Reign of Terror was not driven by one man, one body,or one policy; It was shape by different forces and factors. The Reign of Terror was certainly the most violent period of the French Revolution. Between the years of 1793 and 1794 more than 50,000 people were killed for suspected counter revolutionary activity or so called crimes against liberty One third of this number died under the falling blade of the guillotine. • 4. Negative Effects Of Rejection INTRODUCTION: According to Downey and Feldman (1996), the basic need to belong, the desire to achieve acceptance and to avoid rejection is widely acknowledged to be a powerful motivational drive. Social rejection occurs when an individual is deliberately excluded from a social relationship or social interaction for social rather than practical reasons. A person can be rejected on an individual basis or by an entire group of people. For example it can be missing an invitation to a friend s party, a refusal of a job opportunity, the end of a romantic relationship, or the reluctance of a stranger to talk to you etc. Further, rejection can be active, bullying, teasing or ridiculing, or passive, ignoring a person or giving silent treatment . The experience of being rejected is subjective for the recipient, and it can be perceived when it is not actually present. However, one s perspective on experiencing rejection and the interpretation of the experience rejection vary to a great degree. Since humans are social beings, some level of rejection is an inevitable part of life. Rejection becomes a problem when it is prolonged or consistent, when the relationship is important, or when the individual is highly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When environmental or interpersonal cues are interpreted as rejection, the high rejection sensitivity individual actually experiences feelings of rejection, which are likely to provoke an affective or behavioural overreaction such as aggressive behaviour, depression, or socially inappropriate efforts to prevent, or in some way obviate the rejection (Ayduk Mendoza Denton, 2000). These efforts, in turn, often provoke rejection from the target of the behaviour, and so, the anxiety becomes a reality for the rejection sensitive person. Additional experiences of rejection serve to prolong the expectations of rejection, thus maintaining the rejection sensitive dynamic (Mitchell, Downey, Peake, Rodriguez, ... • 6. Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening Analysis In the modern day world there is an ongoing argument whether love is good or bad in nature. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is a simple poem that was not originally written to create an underlying message of love, but due to the popularity of Robert Frost s work it has and still is being critiqued comprehensively. This paper will prove that Robert Frost is not referring to loving another person in particular but the narrator s peaceful surroundings in the woods. Although, the literary techniques used in Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening create a peaceful environment for the reader, the stop in the wilderness creates a dilemma with the narrator s state of mind. Having considered the case of love the narrator is feeling, it is evident of what is being adored in this poem. The title alone alerts the reader of the place, setting and the basic theme of the story. The woods seem to exhibit a calmness and tranquility that encourages the protagonist to stop his journey and rest and in reality, the wilderness represents madness and darkness in the world. Frost opens the first stanza with the self conscious narrator thinking to himself, Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though (1 2). The man s insecurity naturally causes him to be uneasy but the solitude in the woods creates the affection that awes him. Since this story is told from the narrator s point of view, the reader can now infer that the protagonist is not thinking clearly due to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Lightships Lightships are manned seamarks anchored at a specific point of a river, generally a shallow one. Fixed into place by a mushroom shaped anchor, these small ships (rarely above 50 tons) would initially use large lanterns affixed atop the main mast. Their main advantage is that they could be placed in areas where it was impossible for lighthouses to act as efficient seamarks. Their main disadvantage, especially the early ones, is that turbulent waters could slightly shift the anchor and thus the ship s positioning (Talbot 1913, pp. 241 42). In the worst case scenario, the chains could snap, leaving the ship in a dire position. However, introduced in the early 19th century were numerous lighting inventions (Clarke 2016, pp. 14, 42) as well as mooring technologies using iron, which could anchor a vessel 12 to 14 times the tonnage of the largest lightship (Clarke 2016, pp. 50 56), made them increasingly reliable over time. Ubiquitous to seafarers, their offshore position meant that lightships were out of eyesight of the majority of the population, which explains why they went largely unnoticed, even by most economists and historians including Coase, who studied lighting services. Yet, lightships featured prominently in the frequently cited 1834 Report from the Select Committee on Lighthouses. In fact, of the 55 lights in England, 13 were provided by floating lights (House of Commons 1834, p. VI). As such, lightships were an important contributor to lighting services. What ... Most of the propaganda was related to the need of the factory workers in the factories and the factories needed as many people as possible to help make materials necessary for the war. Therefore, the techniques used to persuade their citizens to join the war movement was through different fonts, pop of colors, and images to catch the reader s eyes. While citizens think the government appreciates their efforts, the materials given during war are important to win the war. Lastly, when images are used in the propaganda, it helps the audience understand what the government needs from their citizens to be part of the war effort. • 16. Themes And Symbolism In The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath Sylvia Plath uses many literary devices to convey her purpose in The Bell Jar such as symbolism. The Bell Jar itself is used as symbolic representation of the emotional state Esther is in. The glass jar distorts her image of the world as she feels trapped under the glass. It represents mental illness; a confining jar that descends over her mind and doesn t allow her to live and think freely. Symbols of life and death pervade The Bell Jar. Esther experiences psychological distress which is a major motif in the novel. The death of Esther s father and the relationship with her mother is a possible reason for her illness. Sylvia Plath expresses the difficulties Esther faces and parallels her struggle with depression and illustrates it using various symbols such as a fig tree, mirrors, beating heart and a bell jar throughout the novel. Symbolism is heavily used throughout the Bell Jar. A fig tree becomes a symbol for the life choices Esther had made. The fig represents a different lifestyle. Esther wants all the figs but she knows she can only choose one, so struggling with what choice to make, the figs all rot. Her, being unable to choose one fig shows Esther s indecisiveness. She took too long to choose a fig, which lead them all the rot. The fig tree comes from a story Esther read early in the novel that she instantly connected to. • 17. Types Of A Secondary Fermentation The process: The brawlers are filled with water and the malts are added once the temperature begins to rise and it is all left to boil. Once boiled, the hops are added. It is then left to boil for around 80 minutes. After 80 minutes the brew is left to cool until reaches 25C then it must be transferred to the formentor. Once in the formentor, the yeast is added and the formentor closed for around two weeks until all the sugar compounds from the malts have been devoured by the yeast, and the alcohol content has been added. The brew is then transferred to a keg, where sugar is added, this allows the brew to go through what is called a secondary fermentation. This increase alcohol percentage as well as giving the brew the common bubbly beer qualities. Process breakdown: Malts are the source of beer s colour and taste as well as the sugar compound which feeds the yeast and gives beer its alcohol content. Barley is the most common source used, often with a touch of rye or wheat, to add a fuller flavour. • 18. Heteronormativity In Let It Go The Disney cinematic universe is riddled with an obscene heteronormativity that appears to be subverted in Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck s, Frozen. The entirety of this film removes itself from the particular expected narrative of its counterparts. This is particularly clear in the title song of the film, Let it Go. Sung by queer icon Idina Menzel, this song seems to divulge from the implications of heteronormativity and showcase clear insinuations of a coming out narrative . Using the works of Somerville, Freud, Wittig, and Butler this paper will aim to follow the protagonist through the song and her queer narrative. Using Somerville s concepts of heteronormativity, it is possible to experience the expectations of Elsa s parents and society. She sings, don t let them in, don t let them see, be the good girl you always have to be it is expected that she will conform to the norms of society and act as the proper woman and monarch. In Subjects of Sex, Gender, Desire, Judith Butler speaks of norms of intelligibility, namely what is accepted as normal by a society. Elsa has hidden away and refused to let people see within her, she hides so as not to be presented as freakish or monstrous. She is unable to fully present herself in a way that would be viewed as normal or expected so she instead removes herself from the view of her society. Butler also mentions the concept of the heterosexual matrix and the expectations of a heteronormative society. Elsa lives in a society that instructs her to hide the aspects of herself that do not conform to the expected norms, she alters the perception of herself so as to fit into the mold of the heterosexual matrix. She escapes it only by accepting aspects of herself that are non normalized and inherently odd. • 21. Imperialism Relations Essay Imperialism relations are also decided by force today, and the Europeans, the Americans and others have to constantly defend their peace loving community. Every state sees itself threatened by the others, and each claims that it only defends itself against the others. If it were true that all states are merely defending themselves, then they would be able to leave each other alone. The rights which one state ascribes to itself against another state are defended. This is an important point: the interests that states have in each other brings the states into conflict with each other not the desire to be left alone. So one has to explain how a conflict exists in ordinary buying and selling, and it is insufficient to explain the conflict between states by resorting to images from the past. It is true that the Spanish stole the Mayans gold, that colonialism was a form of robbery. Therefore, each state s basis of existence is always too small. Now here is the reason why states always turn to the outside world: the growth that the state promotes has a border in the reach of its own power. The state always promotes growth policies, but the country s borders then present a limited market, a limited availability of raw materials and resources, a limited potential labor force; The power that licenses capital, which creates the economic system in the first place, is itself a limit to its growth within its limited range. Under capitalist states, a relationship of mutual recognition comes into existence so that one state can use the other, because the other state calculates the same way, only vice versa. The Consequences And Effects Of Safe Driving Saves Lives Muhammad Chechi Professor Binder Philosophy 12 30 November 2017 Safe Driving Saves Lives Safe driving seems to be very hard for us now. There so many accidents now due to the lack of us being careful and not following the rules. We may think what we are doing isn t bad, or we haven t been caught yet, so we must be good at it. The reality is that we need to think twice about these things before something happens that can change our life or the life of someone else entirely. We may think we can control the situation, but in reality, things can happen so fast that we wouldn t even be able to react to them. The main reasons that cause fatalities and crashes are, driving under the influence, speeding, texting while driving, and not wearing a seatbelt while driving. It doesn t matter how long we have done it or if we haven t been caught, when it does happen it can be a very bad outcome and can happen in a split second. I personally feel that these things have really become a major factor and find it incumbent that something should be done to stop them from happening. An article I read titled, Can Automation and Tougher Laws Save Lives? by Ellen Kennerly talks about some of the causes of fatalities and crashes we tend to have so much of now. Kennerly states, Nearly half of the 2015 fatalities involved an unbelted passenger or driver and about one third were alcohol related. Wow, that is a big number. • 25. The Stages Of Grief By Elisabeth Kubbler Ross And David... Five Stage of Grief The thought of death and dying for many is just that, a mere thought that lives in the back of ones mind. However, for many others these thoughts are a painful reality. How individuals navigate through death and dying is a very personal journey that cannot be easily predicted. It is important to understand that there is neither a set time line nor right or wrong way to process the loss of life. The book On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stage Loss by Elisabeth Kübbler Ross and David Kessler, aims to help individuals experiencing loss better understand the coping emotions associated with the grieving process through identifying five common stages of grief. Denial Kübbler Ross and Kessler (2005) described denial in this instance as a symbolic term versus literal rejection of information. In this case denial may look more like disbelief of shocking information. Denial is the minds way of protecting itself against painful and shocking thoughts, feelings, and perceptions and can be experienced by both healthy and sick persons (Kübbler Ross Kessler, 2005). The minds rejection of painful and harmful information is a form of avoidance coping, which allows individuals to integrate cognitively dissonant information at a more manageable pace (Charles Kamen, 2012). Through denial one may be able to unconsciously manage their feelings about the given situation. Impact of Denial Denial can give individuals the ability to let ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This strife is due to the monster and Victor s conflicting interests and results in a power struggle between the two. This power struggle is similar to one we see in real life, between the bourgeoisie and the working class, as they have a similar power dynamic (Wilson 116). Since the bourgeoisie are credited with the creation of the working class and have control over many aspects of their life, they have immense power over the workers, yet the workers have the strength in numbers to rise up and resist the bourgeoisie. Hawking s starts out the book by going over the different type of cosmology that was held throughout history. He mentions the beliefs that Aristotle, Copernicus, Galileo and other notable individuals held about the universe. This discussion is used to segue into a brief description of the different theories, laws, and ideas concerning the universe held by people today. Newton s laws of motion and gravity and Einstein s theory of relativity are only some of the models that Hawking discusses. Thus, the main purpose of Hawking s A Briefer History in Time is to inform the readers of the development in our understanding of how the universe works. In his conclusion, Hawking s specifically includes the term Mind of God (142). I believe that for Hawking, to understand the mind of God is to understand the workings of the universe and our place in it. Hawking s A Briefer History of Time also asserts that it is possible to know the mind of God. • 35. How Food Waste Management Is Implemented On A Local Scale... Waste is seen as a sign of human success, where the more waste that is generated the wealthier the human population is (Bulkeley, H et al 2009). The world produces enough food to provide for twice the number of the present population which is ironic looking at the global number of malnourished people. Politically, the more we buy the better our economy will be, but finding the balance between economic development and environmental sustainability is key to extending the social, cultural and economic lives of things (Bulkeley, H et al 2009). Downs (1972) states that environmental problems have a life cycle where there is an increase in people becoming motivated to make a change, but as time goes on they lose interest and abandon all effort (Eden, S 2005). In this essay we will look at how the human population needs to take responsible actions to help humanity and the environment. The John McIntyre Conference Center is an example used to show how food waste management is implemented on a local scale. It shows how much food waste Edinburgh University students discarded without taking into consideration the future health and environmental hazards. The JMCC have taken steps to ensure a level of education regarding food waste for the students and staff, as well as investing in improved policies and equipment to limit wastage.
