Investigating Molecules Using Chemsketch And Database Lab...
Investigating Molecules Using Chemsketch and Database
Prepared for Mrs. Mohoruk
Chemistry 11 SL
Finn White Robinson
February 15th, 2017
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to investigate how introducing, but more specifically substituting, a
halogen into a molecule will affect the bond lengths and bond angles of that molecule. The molecule
we will be working with is Ammonia (NH3) and these halogens will be substituted into the place of a
hydrogen. We will investigate the impact of this now attached atom upon the molecule structure.
Plan/Methodology: For this investigation, it is necessary to use a piece of software to accurately
model the molecule and measure bond angles. This should provide the data necessary to ascertain ...

However, as the halogens within the molecule are being pushed away, any hydrogens still within the
molecule also begin to move closer. Overall, though, as halogens were introduced, the bond lengths of
the molecule increased, which can be understood due to a variety of factors. For example, due to the
decrease of electronegativity within the halogens as you proceed down the group, there is also a larger
amount of shielding within the individual atoms. Because of this, when the halogens are being pushed
away from the central atom, the hydrogens are being drawn in closer, as they are attracted to the
imbalanced, more electronegative side of the atom. In the same thought, two halogens within the
molecule will repel each other, which is why in the general formula NX3, we can see this produces the
longest bond lengths of all data

Alexander II And The Russian Revolution
In the 1800 s Russia was facing a very difficult time. Russia s recent defeat in the Crimean war was a
wake up call to the autocracy. This defeat proved to the autocracy that Russia had fallen dangerously
behind their western neighbors, ultimately making it easy for other countries to attach and invade. At
that point, Russia knew it was time for a change and it started with Tsar Alexander II. Alexander II
took over as emperor due to his fathers (Nicholas I) death in St. Petersburg. Some say the reason for
Russia s backward spiral was because of him. However, in 1855 the reign of Alexander II in Russia
began and during his time he directed a period of political and social reforms. Some of the reforms
Alexander II thought had to be changed included: education, military, government, and judicial. Even
after trying to make multiple changes and reforms to better the government, someone was still not
clicking in the Russian government. The main reason the society had so many problems dealt with the
peasants. As many soviet historians have claimed, these reforms were put in place to pacify the
peasantry in order to ward off revolution. During this time the peasants had to work on their lord
owners land and didn t have many other options. While under the new Tsar Alexander II the
government ran into a dry wall and needed a way out. Alexander II did something that to this day goes
down as two perspectives. The first one can be seen as a charter of freedom

The Pros And Cons Of Derek Bentley s Case
During the processes, there are some key people that will contribute to clarify what happened. Among
them, the police, the forensic service, the expert witnesses or witnesses testimony. Sadly, while
sometimes those are the ones who elucidate the crime, at times, their confessions may be critical for
the innocent person who is finally convicted because of their lies and corruption. The role of the police
is central to understanding wrongful convictions, because they gather the evidence, they interview the
suspect and they build the case for conviction . Meanwhile, forensic science is the application of the
natural science to matter of the law and it includes a variety of different activities and specialties.

The Suez Canal Crisis of 1956
Clearly, this period was marked by political instability of which the communists sought to take
advantage of. In 1954, Khalid Bakdash won a seat in parliament as the first communist elected to an
Arab parliament. The Suez Canal Crisis of 1956 strengthened the communist influence in Syria after
signing a pack with the Soviet Union in exchange for military equipment. Soviet support to Syria was
part of the greater strategic battle playing out in the Middle East between the Western and Eastern
blocs. It was apparent that Syrian political power was likely to shift towards communism at this point.
The Communist Party of Syria was becoming highly organized and the army s chief of staff, Afif al
Bizri, was a Communist sympathizer (Irvine, 2013).
Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser pushed for a political union with Syria. Partially in support of
Arab nationalism but also in part to block the communist influence in Syria. Nasser himself was
fearful of communist takeover and during his presidency the Egyptian Communist Party was banned.
Clearly, the growing Communist Party of Syria did not deem this unification desirable, but support for
the unity was quite popular resulting from Nasser s leadership and diplomatic victory in the Suez
Canal Crisis. Therefore, they could not strongly oppose the creation of the United Arab Republic in
1958. This union was short lived as Nasser refused to share significant power with Syria. Syria
became independent once again after a military coup in

Taking a Look at Organic Farming
In recent years, there has been a huge conversion by farmers from conventional to organic farming
due to the increased demand by consumers for products that are produced with fewer synthetic
chemicals and hormones. The Center for American Progress estimated an increase of approximately
17 billion dollars from 23 billion dollars in 2002 to 40 billion dollars in 2006 (Center for Progress,
2008). As opposed to conventional farming, which uses chemical fertilizers, pesticide sprays, and
herbicides, organic farming requires that farmers comply with the regulations and standards set by the
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) such as requiring the crops be produced and handled
without synthetic, prohibited non synthetic, and non agricultural substances and ingredients as well as
unapproved vaccines, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge (USDA Code of Federal Regulations).
Table 1 includes a list of what practices are permitted in conventional and organic farming as
stipulated by the USDA.
The objective of this analysis is to firstly look at the sustainability, which is defined in this report
using the Environmental Protection Agency s definition which is the creation and maintenance of
conditions under which human and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the
social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations (EPA), of the production
and cultivation or crops under organic practices, excluding the handling of livestock,

President Bill Clinton s Impeachment
I was 17 at the time, I remember walking into the house and my parents were glued to the television. It
was basically on every channel, the House of Representative voted to impeach President Bill Clinton.
I remember the news asking people what they thought. The people they asked were divided. The older
crowd was for his removal from office and the younger crowd was against it.
President Bill Clinton s impeachment was not the first in American history. The first presidential
impeachment was in 1868 when President Johnson had removed the then War Secretary. This was two
years after the Tenure of Office Act, which barred the president from removing some major office
holders in the government without the consent of the Senate.

In 1867, the Republicans passed the Tenure of Office Act that occurred over the president s veto.
According to the Tenure of Office Act, the president did not possess enough power to remove an
official that was put in office through senatorial approval. The act was mainly meant to protect those
officials who were Republicans. Late 1867, President Johnson decided to put the constitutionality of
the Tenure of Office Act to the test, this was done by replacing Stanton with Ulysses Grant. However,
Johnson was forced to return the office back to Stanton after the Senate had put in place a measure to
protest the president s move. On February 21, 1968, Johnston decided to do away with Stanton
forever. Johnston did this by replacing Stanton with Lorenzo Thomas. This Simple act leads to the
impeachment of President Johnson and unlike Bill Clinton s, it was a successful one (Foner 653). Fifty
years from now, the Americans will be able to see that in a democracy, no one is indispensable
including the president.
It was a sexual harassment case in 1994, by Paula Jones, a former Arkansas employee, in which the
origins of Bill Clinton s impeachment start. Ms. Jones made accusations that President Clinton had

Persuasive Essay About Rugby
I believe that the old English sport, Rugby, should make it s big return in schools as it would help
spark a new passion for something that has faded away for almost 100 years since the last game our
country has ever won medals in this Olympic sport.
For years, Rugby has been a neglected sport in the United States until recently it is now the nation s
fastest growing sport with over 1.2 million registered participants across the country.
Rugby may not be that popular here in the United States of America as of now, but it is very popular
in Europe and some parts of Asia. Also, Rugby has been in a few major events like the
Olympics, making it an Olympic sport which was introduced into the Olympics in the year 1900, until

There are players that joined from the fear of the dangers of American football and saw rugby as a
safer alternative to football, despite the few changes that made rugby the modern version which is
played today.
Rugby has many similarities as differences with American football like the pads and referee which
was stated before. Some similarities between the two are the lines of scrummage or most commonly
known in the united states as the line of scrimmage, where the two teams are face to face with each
other, the difference in football is that the ball is thrown backwards and then given to the quarterback
which can be thrown forward. In rugby the player number 9 rolls the ball in the scrum where 8 players
bind onto each other and push forward so the team hook can use their leg to swipe the ball back
towards their team where they can pass to the outside players, known as wings, and those players can
run downfield and score a try. In rugby a scrum consists of the 8 forwards, such as props, a hooker,
locks, flanks, and the 8 man. They push each other forward to gain the ball, when the ball is in
possession they can pass the ball

Significance Of The Second Nun Essay
Part one: The Pilgrim In order to understand the significance of the second nun we must first look at
the duties and life of a traditional medieval nun. Medieval nuns and priests were expected to live a
very devout and highly moral life. Medieval nuns and priests must be fully dedicated to god and
christian faith. The daily life of a medieval nun was formulated around three main vows established by
St Benedict in 480 550 AD, The vow of Poverty, The vow of Chastity and the Vow of obedience. As
dictated by these vows nuns and priests must live very modestly and renounce everything they own
for use of the common good, remain chaste for their entire lives and must be obedient to god as well
as their superiores. Medieval nun s and priests lived isolated from civilization in fully self sustained
compounds know as covenants. Inside the covenant nun s and priest were expected to perform daily
tasks such as: washing and cooking for the monastery, raising the necessary supplies of vegetables and
grain, producing wine, ale and honey, providing medical care for the community, providing education
for novices, spinning, weaving and embroidery, and Illuminating manuscripts. In addition to these
tasks nuns and priest followed a very strict and routine schedule of daily prayers known as the book of
hours. All nuns and priests were expected to attend the prayers and would immediately stop what they
are doing to inorder attend. Due to the lack of description in the general prologue and fact

The Battle Of Fredericksburg During The Civil War
The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought towards the beginning of the American Civil War that
spanned over the course of four years, April 1861 April 1865 and consisted of 50 major battles and
thousands of minor battles. The Battle of Fredericksburg lasted exactly five days, December 11 15,
1862. Its location was centered on Fredericksburg, VA and surrounding areas along the Rappahannock
River including Falmouth, Marye s Heights, Stafford Heights, Prospect Hill, and Hamilton s Crossing
(Yandoh, 2001). The Federal Union and Confederates had the same goal. To preserve their way of life,
but that s where the similarities stopped. Both sides wanted a different way of life preserved. The
Confederates goal was to gain independence from the politically oppressive North and to establish an
independent nation that allowed slavery (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Federal Union s initial goal was
to restore the Union. But, its goal changed when it became obvious they would lose the war. The
Union decided to reunite states under a banner in which slavery was no longer acceptable or tolerated.
The war from beginning to end would be a noble crusade for democracy for all people, not just in
America, but throughout the world (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Fredericksburg Campaign and the
Battle of Fredericksburg are the same objective in this case: to capture the town of Fredericksburg.
Leading up to the battle, President Abraham Lincoln was confident he was losing support due to the

President Franklin D. Roosevelt s Four Freedoms Speech
On January 6, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to the nation in his annual message to
Congress, known as his State of the Union Address, which came to be known as the Four Freedoms
speech. Roosevelt listed the four freedoms as:
1. Freedom of speech and expression.
2. Freedom of everyone to worship God in his own way.
3. Freedom from want, meaning economic understandings to secure a healthy life during times of
peace.
4. Freedom from fear.
Roosevelt translated fear utilizing international language to mean a reduction of military weapons and
equipment, all over the world, so thoroughly that nations everywhere would be in a position that
would prevent any physical aggression against anyone. It was Roosevelt s intentions that these
freedoms would apply to every nation everywhere in the world. These Four Freedoms were the focus
for the American soldiers as they entered the war in support of Great Britain.

An Enquiry Concerning The Principles Of Morals Essay
What is a moral? This is a question that has plagued philosophers for many years. Is it possible to
have a set of universal morals? There are many questions that surround the mystery of morals. They
seem to drive our every action. We base our decisions on what is right and what is wrong. But what is
it that actually determines what is right and what is wrong? Is it our sense of reason? Is it our sense of
sentiment? This is a question that David Hume spent much of his life pondering. What exactly is it
that drives our actions? Yes, morals drive them, but what determines what our morals are? What is it
that ultimately drives our actions; our feelings or our minds?

a truth. To make an analogy to mathematics, truth is a function of reason, whereas taste is a function of
sentiment. Sentiment is a function of the individual whereas reason is a function of the universe.
The universe as a whole must follow reason, but the catch is that each individual s universe is slightly
different in that each individual perceives his or her universe differently. quot; What each man feels
within himself is the standard of sentiment. quot; (p.14) That is to say each person s individual
universe has truths. These truths are based on reason. These truths/reasons are what help to determine
the person s sentiment. However, it should be noted that because the reasons are NOT necessarily the
person s sentiments, they do not motivate actions. One other reason why reason does not impel action
is because reason is based on truths. Truths are never changing whereas sentiments are dynamic and
are in a constant change of flux. At one moment, the criminal could feel sympathy for his victims and
decide to spare a life, and the very next, the same criminal could become enraged at the pimple on a
hostage s forehead and shoot him.
Of course these are extreme cases, but the point is clear. Reason would dictate that only the first action
would be moral. If reason drove actions, then moral behavior would prevail and there would be no
immoral actions and hence there would be no crimes.

Comparing Story Of An Hour And The Lottery
Essay Assignment #1: Comparison of Story and Plot
An important aspect of literature that makes the difference between a suspenseful story and a dull and
predictable story is the dynamic use of plot. The quote by E.M. Forster that expresses this idea is, The
king died and then the queen died is a story. The king died, and then the queen died of grief is a plot.
Over the course of the term there have been a number of stories that have touched upon this quote,
those include The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Both of these
stories had interesting central ideas that are important to ponder upon, but the path the author took to
both central ideas were different. In the story, The Story of an Hour, the author ... Show more content

In this story, it discusses the annual event where the entire community comes together to select a name
out of a black box, the person who is selected does not when anything rewarding, but is selected to be

plot, but on the idea of telling a story through chronological order. This creates an aspect where the
story is predictable and arguably more dull than a story with a plot. This aspect is created through the
fact that a reader is able to predict and see what may take place do to the use of chronological order of
the story, because unlike The Story of an Hour where the story does not follow a strict timeline, The
Lottery must do so to maintain the use of story to make the piece successful. Although the story itself
is less suspenseful, the story is successful because it able to express the central theme of asking why

Plato s Fear Of Death
In both the Apology and Phaedo, Plato claims that we shouldn t fear death because we do not have the
wisdom and knowledge of life after death. Additionally, the soul is better off without the body because
it impure the soul. In Letter to Menoeceus, Epicurus claims that death is nothing to us because it
causes no pain and the more we fear death the less we will enjoy our mortal lives. In this essay, I will
argue that Plato s and Epicurus s reasons are incompatible, though both claims were well explained,
Plato argues that death should be embrace because it leads to a greater good, and in contrast, Epicurus
argues that we should live in the moment with happiness and pleasure. For Plato, death should not be
feared because we do not hold the knowledge of life after death. The fear of death is the pretense of
wisdom, and not real wisdom. It is ignorant for someone to believe that they knew what would happen
to them after death. (Apology, 6). Not even Socrates, who believed that he was superior to men in ...

Specifically, Plato s views are focus on embracing death. Since the body contaminates and impure the
soul, death would be separating these two entities and allows the soul to be pure again in its form
without the body (Phaedo, 1 5). Additionally, Plato, explains that after death a true philosopher would
hope to receive the greatest good in the other world (Phaedo, 1). I interpret this to mean that, after
death there is still life in another world, and the reason we should not fear this is because we would
also receive the greatest good where we end up. In contrast, Epicurus views focus living life with
pleasure and happiness. Even if we are young or old, we shouldn t focus on death but instead our
actions should be based off happiness. If we have happiness we have everything but if that is absent,
then all our actions should be directed to attaining it (Epicurus,

immigrant first arrives to America one of his first priorities is to get a job, and that posed a problem
for the Nativists because the immigrants were working for such low wages that they ending up taking
all the jobs of the Nativists. Another thing that the Nativists had a thought might be a problem was
over crowdedness, with millions of people coming to America they saw growth in cities and in rural
areas. And of course with growth in population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like when immigration first started people still dislike the idea of it and want it to stop. It just so
happens that some of the nativist political parties that were started in the 1800 s gained power and are
still around today fighting to control the war on immigration. Many of the laws that were passed are
still around today. Today since illegal immigration is a big problem they have made a border between
Mexico and America, with very strict border patrol. But for the immigrant who come to America
whether illegal or legal if they want to become a citizen they must pass a test first. In the present
people aren t as worried about immigrants causing unsanitary living or overpopulation as much, now
their main focuses are crime, such as smuggling drugs over the border. Smuggling people into
America and selling them as working slaves. Though, jobs is still a current issue since people can pay
illegals under the table for a lot cheaper than a citizen. Another worry that was not one in the past is
terrorism, when an immigrant sneaks into the US illegally then they are able to do terrorist acts easier.
Because of that security is very strict and many background checks are run before they are allowed to

Nineteen Minutes
The book Nineteen Minutes is a tragic story about a teenage boy going into his high school one day
and start to shoot at people after being constantly bullied since kindergarten. The book Please Stop
Laughing at Me is a true story about the author s own experiences being bullied in school. These two
books both deal with the trauma of growing up being bullied and how they both handled it. Peter
Houghton, the bullied victim in Nineteen Minutes, decided to take action himself because no one else
was helping him. Jodee Blanco, after years of bullying, decided to make a book about her own

home. His parents weren t very helpful when Peter was getting bullied. Even from a young age Peter s
mom wanted him to be strong about it and deal with the bullying rather than actually help him through
it. He also had a best friend Josie Cormier, a best friend who used to defend from the bullies until she
decided to leave him for the popular crowd in sixth grade. So after so many years and years of
bullying, with no support from his family and due to the fact that he only had one friend who was also

Although Robert Frost shares how sometimes in life one has to make decisions rather they re good or

chance by looking forward and choosing to take the right paths in life. Mood Theme In this poem
written by author Robert Frost, the poem focuses on the theme and the mood by representing the
choices and decisions that have to be made. The whole poem is based on someone who spends time
throughout his traveling journey making choices and knowing that making the wrong choices can t be
taken back once the choices and decisions have been made. In the poem Frost wrote, Two roads
diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both. (Frost, 1916) This is his way of setting
the mood for the readers to get a better understanding of where he was coming from as he explains
how there are different paths in life one can take, but one can only take one at a time in hopes of
making the right decision. Frost developed metaphors such as Two roads diverged in a yellow wood

Analysis Alternative Dispute Resolution
Discuss the processes available in alternative dispute resolution and explain its advantages and
disadvantages.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) involves dispute resolution processes and techniques that fall
outside of the government judicial process. There has been moves against ADR in the past by entities
of many political parties and their associates, despite this, ADR has gained inclusive acceptance
among both the broad community and the legal profession in past years. In fact, many courts now
entail some parties to remedy to ADR of some type, usually mediation, before allowing the parties
cases to be tried. The increasing attractiveness of ADR can be clarified by the increasing caseload of
traditional courts, the perception ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Normally Direct ‘negotiations , which aren t really a structured mechanism, initiate from one party
implementing a settlement on the other party instead that the parties continue by way of negotiation to
a consensual resolution. We can say that in Direct negotiations there is no third party who assists the
resolution process or imposes a resolution.
Both Conciliation and mediation initiate in an agreement among the disputants to call in the help of a
facilitator to aid in the structuring and conduct of settlement negotiations which will comprise, as part
of their nature, private consultations with each disputant. Usually no one has an authority to impose a
solution on the disputant this includes judges, arbitrators and facilitators. A third party that is the
mediator is in the mediation process, he/she facilitates the resolution process(and may even suggest a
resolution, typically known as a mediator s proposal ), this however does not inflict a resolution on the
parties. In Australia ADR is mediation because after all mediation is a process of ADR. The distinction
among the processes lies in the position of the third party facilitator whose role may be submissive
this means to find a consensual agreement without providing opinions by isolating the issues of

Examples Of Evil In Jekyll And Hyde
Mask of Evil What is Evil? The meaning of evil is profoundly immoral and malevolent. Some
examples of evil are anonymously emailing death threats, suing someone who did nothing wrong in
order to try to collect a big payday and passing on information that you know is a lie about a political
opponent. These are not truly evil, they are mainly rude. The mask I made shows that there are 2
different faces. It represents that most evil people have 2 faces. (They wear a fake face while they also
wear another face at different times.) An evil person is a person who harms people out of hatred. They

George Washington s Accomplishments
Cary Racioppi US History Bowler 9/16/14 Unit II Essay Prompt #1 Although George Washington
may not be exalted as a successful military leader when assessing number of wins; he is still, due to
his unremitting persistence and prudent tactics, such as strategic retreat, among those, such as
Napoleon, who are highly regarded when discussing renowned military leaders. One of the things that
makes a general memorable and considered successful today is determined by their accomplishments
and their endeavors to achieve these accomplishments. A main reason George Washington is
recognized today as a legendary general, is because, despite the unskilled army he was provided, he
managed to attain the pivotal goal for America; gaining its independence. George Washington had a
very well understanding of military power, and was forced to aid in making an army of untrained
farmers into an army of warriors. Over time, the army progressed, but nowhere near as qualified as the

up to the win of the American Revolution, as opposed to losing his men and the entire war. Strategic
retreat was a strategy Washington utilized that did not allow his army to be surrounded, did not
involve any fighting or weaponry to be used, and would be mentally and physically exhausting to the
British. In hopes that the British would give up, strategic retreat was the only thing Washington s army

them, to befriend them and even master them. The story explores the nature of guilt, while exploring
traumatic events of the Holocaust through a survivor. This graphic novel also explores the impact of
the Holocaust and how it affected the lives of people who were born after it ended. Once reading

Scarlet Letter Outline
Ah, but, let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart (Hawthorne 49).
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne tells the story of Hester Prynne, a woman living in Boston
in the mid 1600s. While Hester s husband is assumed dead at sea, Hester has relations with the town s
minister, Dimmesdale. She later has a child named Pearl. The Puritans of the town criticize Hester for
committing adultery and make her wear a scarlet letter A on her chest as a punishment for her sin.
B. Thesis: Through a series of symbols, Hawthorne depicts the structure of Puritan society and how
people s harsh judgements shape the identities of several characters.

The symbolism of the scaffold changes throughout three separate chapters. In the beginning, Hester
and Pearl are displayed on the scaffold as they are being interrogated by the top officials of their town.
Dimmesdale watches from the side with feelings of guilt, but he does not reveal he is Pearl s father.
Chillingworth disguises himself in the crowd as a physician as he learns of Hester s transgression.
Here the scaffold symbolizes humiliation and persecution as Hester and Pearl are being displayed in
front of their town. The second scaffold scene takes place about seven years later at night when
[Dimmesdale] had been driven hither by the impulse of that Remorse which dogged him everywhere...
(136). Here the scaffold represents the purging of guilt for Dimmesdale. Unlike Hester and Pearl who
had been forced to climb up the scaffold, Dimmesdale does so willingly as an attempt to lessen his
intense feelings of guilt for his adultery. As Hester and Pearl are returning home from a burial, they
decide to climb up the scaffold and join him. Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale link hands. Now the
scaffold symbolizes a place of unity for the three; no one is around as they connect as mother, father,
and child. The scaffold acts as a place of safety for the family where they are free from judgement.
The last scaffold scene takes place at the end of the book where Dimmesdale is found atop of the
scaffold once again. He is

The Importance Of Typology In Christianity
Christianity has been from the beginning a typological religion. Typology in Christian theology and
Biblical exegesis is a doctrine or theory concerning the relationship between the Old and New
Testaments . (Merriam Webster 868) Perhaps the single most important concept for understanding
early Christianity is typology. Typology is a form of study of literature identifying symbols especially
in the Bible. This system of groupings, usually called types, the members of which are identified by
postulating specified attributes that are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive groupings set
up to aid demonstration or inquiry by establishing a limited relationship among phenomena. Typology
is interpreted throughout text in American literature such as William Bradford s Plymouth Plantation,
Jonathan Edward s Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and Thomas Paine Common Sense. During
the Enlightenment, the meaning of Protestant identity became increasingly vague; typology took on
the hazy significance of image and symbol; what passed for the divine plan had lost its strict
grounding sculpture; providence itself was shaken loose from its religious frame work to became part
of the belief in the human progress. The eighteenth century clergy took advantage of this movement to
shift the focus of figural authority, from Bible history to the American experience. In effect, they
substituted a regional for a biblical past, sanctified the American present as a movement from promise

The Octogonal Structure Roared from Shakespeare s Performers
This octogonal structure roared from Shakespeare s performers. The actors and the audience
throughout the performances had tears, laughter, and many left in complete awe. Every seat in this
three story theatre was packed tightly with over 30,000 eyes watching. Flags rose, and trumpets
started to play in the Globe while productions began. The Globe Theatre started an era of acting in the
late 1500 s and changed the way we look at performing still to this day.
This theatre was jaw dropping as people entered this salvaged wood framed theatre. In 1599, the stage
was ready for acts to begin. The name of the Globe Theatre was for people to know that the whole
round world could be represented by every actor. William Shakespeare referred to the theatre as this
wooden O (Langly). In Elizabethan times, the ground along the bankside could flood by the Thames,
so the Globe had to have solid foundations. After about 1600, as many as 15,000 people went to the
city s playhouse every week.
The Globe was designed and was a hodgepodge of architectural structures. This framework held the
first performances. All actors were men. It did not matter whether the role was a woman or man. The
theatre was also one of the only social sites that brought together different classes of people. Of this
three story masterpiece there were special sections reserved for members of nobility.
The acting was a whole different situation. Woman were not allowed to act under the law, so men had

The best part about being a human being is our ability to look into ourselves, and see both the good
and the bad. Sometimes we might see traits that we love about ourselves, and other times we might
only see things we hate, but we should be able to see that all of it is good. This good comes from God
making us in God s image; by doing this God gives us inherent dignity, and value. And just as
Bonaventure says we can use our internal reflections like a mirror to see God. This idea really struck
me while I was reading, there is no way am I a mirror to see God. There s no way you can see God

In this text Francis describes again that we are made in God s image and likeness, but because of this
we can t take undue credit for our talents and gifts, because after all they re not ours to take credit for

of praising God. To praise God I have to appreciate that first my wittiness helps to bring out more of
my outgoing nature. Because when I first meet someone again it might be an awkward situation, but
by making a joke I m able to alleviate some of that tension, and get the ball rolling on our hopeful
friendship. Secondly, I have to take my wit for what it is, and as one of God s gifts to me I have an
obligation to try and alleviate the suffering of others by making them laugh. Obviously this isn t
always going to happen. But, I also feel like my wit helps me to see if I could be friends with a person,

her passion; her direction of work slightly altered as her second job focused on helping the soldiers at
war. Rosalind joined the Coal Utilization Research Association and was assigned to explore in great
detail the density and porous nature of coal, more specifically, Rosalind focused on the micropores
which were found at a molecular scale. It was during this time that people began fearing this war
would be like the First World War in the sense of the rapidly spreading poisonous gas. Therefore,
research into coal as filters for gas masks was urgent. This complex research proved to be valuable for
her following work positions which dealt with more microstructures. Cambridge University awarded
Rosalind a Doctorate based on her substantial research in this field of Physical Chemistry. Two years
after receiving her Doctorate she moved to Paris where she found a job using X ray diffraction; this
was generally used to determine the structure of crystal structures, but use began to explore the shape
of structure less molecules. In 1950 she was invited to build an X ray diffraction laboratory at King s

she was hired as an assistant to him. Both Wilkins and Rosalind started off on the wrong foot yet both
researched DNA, but did not collaborate with their efforts. Franklin quickly learned of the drastic

Essay on Physioex 9.0 Exercise 3
Activity 1
1. Increasing extracellular K+ reduces the net diffusion of K+ out of the neuron through the K+ leak
channels because the membrane is permeable to K+ ions. Therefore, the K+ ions will diffuse down its
concentration gradient from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
2. Increasing extracellular K+ causes the membrane potential to change to a less negative value
because the K+ ions diffuse out across the membrane. My results went well compared to my
prediction because I predicted that the resting membrane potential would become less negative.
3. The extracellular Na+ did not alter the membrane potential in the resting neuron because the Na+
channels were mostly closed.
4. Na+ and K+ both have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5. The Pacinian corpuscle and free nerve ending will likely not have a membrane protein that
recognizes other molecules because their stimulus modality are not chemical unlike the olfactory
receptors.
6. The type of sensory neuron that would like respond to a green light would be photoreceptors.
Activity 3
1. The term threshold as it applies to an action potential is the voltage at which you first observe an
action potential.
2. Depolarization in membrane potential triggers an action potential because nearby axonal
membranes will be depolarized to values near or above threshold voltage.
3. The action potential at R1 (or R2) stayed the same as I increased the stimulus above the threshold
voltage. My results did not compare well with my prediction because I predicted that the peak value of
the action potential would increase.
4. The phrase all or nothing describes action potential because it only occurs when you reach threshold
voltage.
5. The part of the neuron that was investigated in this activity was the axon.
Activity 4
1. TTX blocks the voltage gated Na+ channels between R1 and R2, which blocks the propagation of
the action potential from R1 to R2.
2. Lidocaine blocks the voltage gated Na+ channels between R1 and R2, which blocks the propagation
of the action potential from R1 to R2. The effect of lidocaine differs

Celie Vs Spielberg
The book and motion picture The Color Purple is a compelling story of a one Celie who finds her
womanhood and humanity with help from the other characters. From her abusive father and husband
to her loving friend Shrug Avery, a strong woman known for her voice, Celie takes a long journey into
personal freedom. Both Walker and Spielberg use
Celie s experiences to convey how her struggles allow her to come into her womanhood, however,
Walker tells the story through a darker and hopeless lens whereas Spielberg presents the pain through
a much less negative perspective.
Both Alice walker and Steven Spielberg portray Celie s struggles in detail, however, Spielberg fails to
show Celie s seriousness and soulem spirit in the production of The Color Purple. As the book ...

Throughout this section of the scene Celie does display happiness through a smile and light laughter.
This sense of happiness does not carry over in the book. The book portrays a more, glass half empty
point of view, where Celie is more jealous of her husband s relationship with Shrug. When Mr. gets
home from meeting Shrug, Celie wants to ask a million questions about her but holds them all in
because Mr. would not want to answer them. She also shows her self consciousness in the book
because of Shrug. Although Celie looks up to
Shrug and idolises her in the book, she also knows that shrug is the woman which her husband wishes
he had married. This is very destroying to Celie s self confidence. Celie knows that the bar is set so
high for her that she will never be able to live up to the standards to which her husband expects. In
both the book and the movie, Celie helps
Shrug back to health. In the book Celie and Shrug come out of Shrugs sickness with a very strong
relationship and Celie uses Shrug as a way to become who she is as a person. In the movie, Celie and

Differences Between Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men Movie Review I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you. The
movie Of Mice and Men, directed by Gary Sinise in 1992, showed what life was like in rural America
during the Great Depression. The movie also showed how people feel loneliness and alienated because
they aren t accepted for their differences. Horton Foote, the screenwriter, did an exceptional job of
writing a script that was very similar to the book. The movie didn t take anything away from John
Steinbeck s classic novel written fifty five years earlier. Although those sections of the movie were
nicely done, the setting and and acting of the movie occasionally lacked believability. Of Mice and
Men took place in the 1930s. George Milton and

Cage Free Egg Free Eggs
The article from Huffington Post with the heading McDonald s Plans To Switch To Cage Free Eggs
mentions the announcement of McDonald s plan on cage free eggs. McDonald s plans to complete the
transition to cage free eggs in the U.S. and Canada by 2025.1 The article not only brings cage free
eggs into concern, but also raises heated discussion about whether hens should be bred in the cage free
system or in the conventional way. In this essay, I will argue that it is a right choice to switch to the
cage free system in terms of the animal welfare. Besides, I will suggest that the cage free system
should be encouraged because eggs laid by hens raised in such system embraces better nutrition.
Encouragement of cage free eggs is a bold move, but it is worth carrying out. In terms of the animal
welfare, the cage free system treats hens in a more humane manner and ensures them a life with more
freedom. An overwhelming majority of hens are limited in the conventional cages, where they each
can share only 67 square inches of the cage space.2 67 square inches cannot even compare with a
piece of letter size paper which takes up about 93.5 square inches. Such tiny space is not enough for
hens to spread their wings, let alone make nests or perch. The conventional system shows a lack of
certain humanity. Unlike the conventional system, the cage free system provides more spacious room
for hens, where they are able to walk around within a certain range, to spread their

Persuasive Essay On Bo Jackson
Excellence One quote a person says can change the rest of one s life. More specifically, Bo Jackson,
famous National Football League running back and Major League Baseball player has had his fair
share of both success and well spoken quotes. Jackson had the ability to be a hall of famer in both of
the sports, as he was one of the hardest workers to play the game and refused to be satisfied with
anything less than superp. Bo Jackson s once said, Set your goals high and don t stop till you get there,
contained some of the most inspirational words to flow out of a person s mouth. This quote demands
the people to set their goals high, work relentlessly until their goal is achieved, and to be ambitious.
Arguably, setting your goals high is what Bo Jackson was trying to say in his quote, and ultimately
achieve greatness. Setting your goals high is so important, and there are so many reasons on why to do
this. Primarily, setting high goals leads to the possibility for a greater return. This is because even if
one works as hard as possible and miss the ultimate goal it is very possible that he will have had more
success than if one only aimed for an easy tasks. Setting your goals high segues into the second
reason, which is that it will generate more momentum to work. For example if one is to complete a
small project in a week they might procrastinate until Rhinesmith 2 the last moment, naturally putting
in less effort. However if someone is to be given a difficult tasks they will naturally work much harder
to complete said task. When goals are set higher they will be placed at a higher standard if they
receive greater effort, giving the goal purpose. When one realizes that the goal they are set to achieve
has purpose, completing it will seem necessary. Working hard plays an extremely important role when
attempting to achieve a goal. Hard work is demonstrated in the part of the quote where Jackson says,
...don t stop till you get there.. This quote was said by one of the hardest workers of all time, Bo
Jackson, therefore this definitely plays a key role in success. Not only did he say this, but he meant
every single word in this quote, as one

The Decision Support Systems ( Dsss )
1) Forestry sector is one of the significant industries in Chile having consistent growth. There are
multiple big forestry companies in Chile, owning large (in thousands of hectares of land) plantations.
In 1988, all the companies joined an association called Forestry Production Group (GPF) coordinated
by a non profit organization called Fundacion Chile to help in the development of Chile. All the
companies alongwith the help of University of Chile jointly developed various optimization decision
systems to help the industry efficiently handle the consistent and large growth in the forestry sector
and help the companies run their businesses more efficiently and profitably. (The systems developed

Thus the output of the model is the truck schedule, i.e. from which origins to schedule the trucks to the
destination, satisfying the total demand at each destination.
The constraints include: the availability of trucks and cranes at the locations, types of trucks and
cranes needed for specific products and origin destinations, the time and cost involved with each type
of truck and crane (time and money constraint), time of arrival of trucks at destinations, which decide
the number of cranes needed for unloading, and, finally, labor and policy constraints (such as the
maximum working hours per day/week).
b) OPTICORT: This system is used for short term planning for harvesting, i.e., which timber stands
should be harvested to satisfy demand for the next period (typically three months).
The demand is for various types of logs (depending on the length and diameter required). The task of
the planner is to select the timber stands to harvest so that depending on the height of the trees, the
demand for various types of logs can be satisfied through minimum number of trees without wasting
much timber for lower grade pulp.
The objective function is to maximize the profit (or, in other words, minimize the total harvesting and
transportation cost).
The constraints include:
i) Total volume of timber available ii) Harvesting capacity constraint iii) Supply constraint, i.e., the
availability of each type of timber

Analysis Of Film Congo
Paramount Pictures film Congo, adapted from the Michael Crichton novel of the same name, is one of
the smartest parody of typical jungle adventure plots in cinema. Congo, after its release, has been
criticized for try to piggyback off The success of Universal s Jurassic Park just two years earlier
(James Berardinelli). Though the camp style, visuals, and acting, adds to the film s charm, while not
undermining the viewer s intelligence with smart one liners and dialogue that holds weight between
acts. This creates the feel of a B action movie on an A movie s budget.
Large uncharted jungles, counties in political turmoil, and lost cities of dead civilizations, are settings
that are archetypal to adventure films. Congo uses these settings to play with the movie s humor. With
several sites such as the city of Zinj, clearly looking like it was shot on a sound stage in Hollywood,
gives less believability to scenes filmed on location. Taking the gravity and the sense of danger from
even the intense scenes. This is aided by the practical effects such as costumes of the silver back
gorilla, and gray gorillas, with stiff movement and equally rigid expressions. Tied with minimal effect,
such as an animatronic hippo in the night river scene, gives Congo the visual interpretation of a
comedy.
The comedic parody aspect continues into the actors pretrial of the characters in Congo. The movie s
opening scene shows Jon Don Bakers character, giving a text book example of over acting,

Public And Financial Advantages And Disadvantages Of Going...
Business start as private, receiving investments from persons and venture capitalists. When a business
decides to open its shares to the public, this changes the business from private to public , going public
completely changes how a business operates. A business goes public when an investment bank
approves the company for an initial public offering. The investment bank, or underwriter, becomes
legally responsible for the shares and sells them to the public (Meilert, 2010). When a business is
public, anyone can buy a share of that business on a public stock exchange. Thus, the SEC entails
public businesses to reveal financial information through a public quarterly and yearly SEC filing. The
advantages of going public is the financial benefit in the form of raising capital, to grow or expand the
business. Another advantage is the public awareness of the business, by making their product known
to potential consumers. Debt to equity ratios generally progress after going public which surges the
businesses ability to get financing. Disadvantages of going public include, the time and resources to
create reports, file paperwork and work with bank underwriters on the financial plans, going public
can be very expensive. Also, when your business goes public, there is more analysis and omission for
the business. Publicly traded companies are obligated to file financial reports and disclosures with the
SEC. These reports are accessible to the public, so your business is

Animals Are Not Being Treated Essay
With a growing population the farmers are having to raise more animals for production. . While
having to maximize their output they are having to lowering their expenses. In the process the animals
are being confined in small areas to help get them fatter and have to get them ready for market
quicker. The animals are not being given the best environment or treatment. A lot of people do not
realize how the animals being treated can affect us and they are only worrying about what they are
going to eat. The sheer number of animals raised within confinement operations increases the
transmission of infectious agents within flocks and herds and, by extension, between animals and
human workers (Animal Welfare Institute). When the animals are kept in small confined areas it can
cause them to get sick and when we eat the meat it could affect us. That may be reason behind why we
get swine flu. When they give the animals medicine that is also used in human medicine, it can cause
us to become resistant to the antibiotic. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each
year two million people in the United States contract antibiotic
resistant infections (Animal Welfare Institute). This proves that it is actually possible for us to become
resistant to medicine because they giving the same thing to the animals we eat. Animal and manure
management on confinement operations, animal transport, and meat processing can also contribute to
food contamination and foodborne illness

History of Lehman Brothers
With a special focus on recognizing the potential of promising industries and helping finance the
expansion of these enterprises, Lehman Brothers played an important part in the financial and
commercial history of the United States for more than 150 years. The history of the firm offers an
inside look at the emergence and growth of American industry and technology as well as the
establishment of the modern corporation.

In 1844, Henry Lehman immigrated from Rimpar, Germany, to Montgomery, Alabama where he
established a small shop selling groceries, dry goods, and utensils to the local cotton farmers. By
1850, his two brothers, Emanuel and Mayer, had joined him in the business, and they named it
Lehman Brothers. After Henry Lehman s death in 1855 at the age of 33, the two younger brothers
headed the firm for the next four decades. During their tenure, only family members sons, brothers,
and cousins were permitted as partners. This was a policy that continued until the 1920s.
Soon after its founding, Lehman Brothers evolved from a general merchandising business to a

The Table By Sylvia Plath Tone
The Table, written in 1998 by Ted Hughes, is a free verse poem communicating the idea of loss, using
the death of his wife, Sylvia Plath, as his form of expressing his experiences and interpretations of the
topic. The change of tone from the beginning to the end of the poem assists the idea of loss, as well as
the language used and the strong use of imagery. Ted Hughes wife, Sylvia Plath, struggled with
depression for most of her life. Hughes seems to be using this poem as an opportunity to convince the
reader of his desire to support her love of writing but it was through her writing that she was truly able
to express her own grief and loss and to eventually let her long dead father back into her life the result
being Hughes losing his wife to her father.
Feelings of loss and grief can occur after losing someone or something that you care about. ( What is
Loss and Grief ). This could include a range of things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem starts with a seemingly supportive husband, he is positive about helping her pursue her love
and talent of writing so he builds her a table to write on. He shortly transforms into a very confused
and lost man. He doesn t understand what is happening to his wife and doesn t know how to reach out
to her as he can t compete with her father. I embraced / Lady Death, your rival (Hughes, 36 37).
Hughes is signifying that he must accept that he has lost his wife, physically and emotionally and all
the plans and dreams they had for their lives. His tone begins to turn to anger and bitterness after her
passing. Hughes explains that he has all the props of a happy life around him but there is no her,
therefore there is no life anymore. He appears to blame the situation on Plath, saying that the script of
their lives is shredded as she allowed her father into their lives, allowed him to take her away
willingly, that she was the one who brought this underlying issue to

Sex Education Vs Single Sex Schools
Single sex schools, the new and improved way of learning
In 2006 federal legislation allowed public school districts to create single gender schools and
classrooms for their students. That was a wise decision considering single sex schools have been
proven to benefit students. Although society insist that coed school is a superior learning style and is
key to getting better grades they are wrong, single sex schools actually have a better history with the
educational performance of their students and due to that their students are acknowledged to obtain a
more profound career path.
The main purpose of attending any type of school is to gain knowledge and further your knowledge
successfully. In 2010, 78.2 percent of high school students in coed schools graduated on time. On the
other hand the single sex schools received higher percentages across the board. Eagle Academy in
New York, the state s first public all male school, reported an 82 percent graduation rate for the same
time period. Correspondingly, the young Women s Leadership Charter School in Chicago reported a
100 percent graduation rate(NASSPE). The main cause for the percent differences are that students in
single sex schools are less distracted by their peers and surroundings. The main argument in favor of
single sex schooling is that both males and females learn differently, teachers can better educate their
students if they are all the same gender because they can employ specific strategies to enhance their

  • 2. Investigating Molecules Using Chemsketch And Database Lab... Investigating Molecules Using Chemsketch and Database Prepared for Mrs. Mohoruk Chemistry 11 SL Finn White Robinson February 15th, 2017 Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to investigate how introducing, but more specifically substituting, a halogen into a molecule will affect the bond lengths and bond angles of that molecule. The molecule we will be working with is Ammonia (NH3) and these halogens will be substituted into the place of a hydrogen. We will investigate the impact of this now attached atom upon the molecule structure. Plan/Methodology: For this investigation, it is necessary to use a piece of software to accurately model the molecule and measure bond angles. This should provide the data necessary to ascertain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, as the halogens within the molecule are being pushed away, any hydrogens still within the molecule also begin to move closer. Overall, though, as halogens were introduced, the bond lengths of the molecule increased, which can be understood due to a variety of factors. For example, due to the decrease of electronegativity within the halogens as you proceed down the group, there is also a larger amount of shielding within the individual atoms. Because of this, when the halogens are being pushed away from the central atom, the hydrogens are being drawn in closer, as they are attracted to the imbalanced, more electronegative side of the atom. In the same thought, two halogens within the molecule will repel each other, which is why in the general formula NX3, we can see this produces the longest bond lengths of all data ... • 6. Alexander II And The Russian Revolution In the 1800 s Russia was facing a very difficult time. Russia s recent defeat in the Crimean war was a wake up call to the autocracy. This defeat proved to the autocracy that Russia had fallen dangerously behind their western neighbors, ultimately making it easy for other countries to attach and invade. At that point, Russia knew it was time for a change and it started with Tsar Alexander II. Alexander II took over as emperor due to his fathers (Nicholas I) death in St. Petersburg. Some say the reason for Russia s backward spiral was because of him. However, in 1855 the reign of Alexander II in Russia began and during his time he directed a period of political and social reforms. Some of the reforms Alexander II thought had to be changed included: education, military, government, and judicial. Even after trying to make multiple changes and reforms to better the government, someone was still not clicking in the Russian government. The main reason the society had so many problems dealt with the peasants. As many soviet historians have claimed, these reforms were put in place to pacify the peasantry in order to ward off revolution. During this time the peasants had to work on their lord owners land and didn t have many other options. While under the new Tsar Alexander II the government ran into a dry wall and needed a way out. Alexander II did something that to this day goes down as two perspectives. The first one can be seen as a charter of freedom ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The role of the police is central to understanding wrongful convictions, because they gather the evidence, they interview the suspect and they build the case for conviction . • 8. The Suez Canal Crisis of 1956 Clearly, this period was marked by political instability of which the communists sought to take advantage of. In 1954, Khalid Bakdash won a seat in parliament as the first communist elected to an Arab parliament. The Suez Canal Crisis of 1956 strengthened the communist influence in Syria after signing a pack with the Soviet Union in exchange for military equipment. Soviet support to Syria was part of the greater strategic battle playing out in the Middle East between the Western and Eastern blocs. It was apparent that Syrian political power was likely to shift towards communism at this point. The Communist Party of Syria was becoming highly organized and the army s chief of staff, Afif al Bizri, was a Communist sympathizer (Irvine, 2013). Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser pushed for a political union with Syria. Partially in support of Arab nationalism but also in part to block the communist influence in Syria. Nasser himself was fearful of communist takeover and during his presidency the Egyptian Communist Party was banned. Clearly, the growing Communist Party of Syria did not deem this unification desirable, but support for the unity was quite popular resulting from Nasser s leadership and diplomatic victory in the Suez Canal Crisis. Therefore, they could not strongly oppose the creation of the United Arab Republic in 1958. This union was short lived as Nasser refused to share significant power with Syria. • 9. Taking a Look at Organic Farming In recent years, there has been a huge conversion by farmers from conventional to organic farming due to the increased demand by consumers for products that are produced with fewer synthetic chemicals and hormones. The Center for American Progress estimated an increase of approximately 17 billion dollars from 23 billion dollars in 2002 to 40 billion dollars in 2006 (Center for Progress, 2008). As opposed to conventional farming, which uses chemical fertilizers, pesticide sprays, and herbicides, organic farming requires that farmers comply with the regulations and standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) such as requiring the crops be produced and handled without synthetic, prohibited non synthetic, and non agricultural substances and ingredients as well as unapproved vaccines, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge (USDA Code of Federal Regulations). Table 1 includes a list of what practices are permitted in conventional and organic farming as stipulated by the USDA. The objective of this analysis is to firstly look at the sustainability, which is defined in this report using the Environmental Protection Agency s definition which is the creation and maintenance of conditions under which human and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations (EPA), of the production and cultivation or crops under organic practices, excluding the handling of livestock, ... • 10. President Bill Clinton s Impeachment I was 17 at the time, I remember walking into the house and my parents were glued to the television. It was basically on every channel, the House of Representative voted to impeach President Bill Clinton. I remember the news asking people what they thought. The people they asked were divided. The older crowd was for his removal from office and the younger crowd was against it. President Bill Clinton s impeachment was not the first in American history. The first presidential impeachment was in 1868 when President Johnson had removed the then War Secretary. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1867, the Republicans passed the Tenure of Office Act that occurred over the president s veto. According to the Tenure of Office Act, the president did not possess enough power to remove an official that was put in office through senatorial approval. The act was mainly meant to protect those officials who were Republicans. Late 1867, President Johnson decided to put the constitutionality of the Tenure of Office Act to the test, this was done by replacing Stanton with Ulysses Grant. However, Johnson was forced to return the office back to Stanton after the Senate had put in place a measure to protest the president s move. On February 21, 1968, Johnston decided to do away with Stanton forever. Johnston did this by replacing Stanton with Lorenzo Thomas. This Simple act leads to the impeachment of President Johnson and unlike Bill Clinton s, it was a successful one (Foner 653). Some similarities between the two are the lines of scrummage or most commonly known in the united states as the line of scrimmage, where the two teams are face to face with each other, the difference in football is that the ball is thrown backwards and then given to the quarterback which can be thrown forward. In rugby the player number 9 rolls the ball in the scrum where 8 players bind onto each other and push forward so the team hook can use their leg to swipe the ball back towards their team where they can pass to the outside players, known as wings, and those players can run downfield and score a try. • 13. Significance Of The Second Nun Essay Part one: The Pilgrim In order to understand the significance of the second nun we must first look at the duties and life of a traditional medieval nun. Medieval nuns and priests were expected to live a very devout and highly moral life. Medieval nuns and priests must be fully dedicated to god and christian faith. The daily life of a medieval nun was formulated around three main vows established by St Benedict in 480 550 AD, The vow of Poverty, The vow of Chastity and the Vow of obedience. As dictated by these vows nuns and priests must live very modestly and renounce everything they own for use of the common good, remain chaste for their entire lives and must be obedient to god as well as their superiores. Medieval nun s and priests lived isolated from civilization in fully self sustained compounds know as covenants. Inside the covenant nun s and priest were expected to perform daily tasks such as: washing and cooking for the monastery, raising the necessary supplies of vegetables and grain, producing wine, ale and honey, providing medical care for the community, providing education for novices, spinning, weaving and embroidery, and Illuminating manuscripts. In addition to these tasks nuns and priest followed a very strict and routine schedule of daily prayers known as the book of hours. The Battle Of Fredericksburg During The Civil War The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought towards the beginning of the American Civil War that spanned over the course of four years, April 1861 April 1865 and consisted of 50 major battles and thousands of minor battles. The Battle of Fredericksburg lasted exactly five days, December 11 15, 1862. Its location was centered on Fredericksburg, VA and surrounding areas along the Rappahannock River including Falmouth, Marye s Heights, Stafford Heights, Prospect Hill, and Hamilton s Crossing (Yandoh, 2001). The Federal Union and Confederates had the same goal. To preserve their way of life, but that s where the similarities stopped. Both sides wanted a different way of life preserved. The Confederates goal was to gain independence from the politically oppressive North and to establish an independent nation that allowed slavery (Olson Raymer, 2014). The Federal Union s initial goal was to restore the Union. But, its goal changed when it became obvious they would lose the war. The Union decided to reunite states under a banner in which slavery was no longer acceptable or tolerated. The war from beginning to end would be a noble crusade for democracy for all people, not just in America, but throughout the world (Olson Raymer, 2014). Roosevelt spoke to the nation in his annual message to Congress, known as his State of the Union Address, which came to be known as the Four Freedoms speech. Roosevelt listed the four freedoms as: 1. Freedom of speech and expression. 2. Freedom of everyone to worship God in his own way. 3. Freedom from want, meaning economic understandings to secure a healthy life during times of peace. 4. Freedom from fear. Roosevelt translated fear utilizing international language to mean a reduction of military weapons and equipment, all over the world, so thoroughly that nations everywhere would be in a position that would prevent any physical aggression against anyone. It was Roosevelt s intentions that these freedoms would apply to every nation everywhere in the world. These Four Freedoms were the focus for the American soldiers as they entered the war in support of Great Britain. • 18. An Enquiry Concerning The Principles Of Morals Essay What is a moral? This is a question that has plagued philosophers for many years. Is it possible to have a set of universal morals? There are many questions that surround the mystery of morals. They seem to drive our every action. We base our decisions on what is right and what is wrong. But what is it that actually determines what is right and what is wrong? Is it our sense of reason? Is it our sense of sentiment? This is a question that David Hume spent much of his life pondering. What exactly is it that drives our actions? Yes, morals drive them, but what determines what our morals are? What is it that ultimately drives our actions; our feelings or our minds? Hume would ... Sentiment is a function of the individual whereas reason is a function of the universe. The universe as a whole must follow reason, but the catch is that each individual s universe is slightly different in that each individual perceives his or her universe differently. quot; What each man feels within himself is the standard of sentiment. quot; (p.14) That is to say each person s individual universe has truths. These truths are based on reason. These truths/reasons are what help to determine the person s sentiment. However, it should be noted that because the reasons are NOT necessarily the person s sentiments, they do not motivate actions. One other reason why reason does not impel action is because reason is based on truths. Truths are never changing whereas sentiments are dynamic and are in a constant change of flux. At one moment, the criminal could feel sympathy for his victims and decide to spare a life, and the very next, the same criminal could become enraged at the pimple on a hostage s forehead and shoot him. Of course these are extreme cases, but the point is clear. Reason would dictate that only the first action would be moral. If reason drove actions, then moral behavior would prevail and there would be no immoral actions and hence there would be no crimes. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Comparing Story Of An Hour And The Lottery Essay Assignment #1: Comparison of Story and Plot An important aspect of literature that makes the difference between a suspenseful story and a dull and predictable story is the dynamic use of plot. The quote by E.M. Forster that expresses this idea is, The king died and then the queen died is a story. The king died, and then the queen died of grief is a plot. Over the course of the term there have been a number of stories that have touched upon this quote, those include The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Both of these stories had interesting central ideas that are important to ponder upon, but the path the author took to both central ideas were different. This creates an aspect where the story is predictable and arguably more dull than a story with a plot. This aspect is created through the fact that a reader is able to predict and see what may take place do to the use of chronological order of the story, because unlike The Story of an Hour where the story does not follow a strict timeline, The Lottery must do so to maintain the use of story to make the piece successful. Additionally, the soul is better off without the body because it impure the soul. In Letter to Menoeceus, Epicurus claims that death is nothing to us because it causes no pain and the more we fear death the less we will enjoy our mortal lives. In this essay, I will argue that Plato s and Epicurus s reasons are incompatible, though both claims were well explained, Plato argues that death should be embrace because it leads to a greater good, and in contrast, Epicurus argues that we should live in the moment with happiness and pleasure. For Plato, death should not be feared because we do not hold the knowledge of life after death. The fear of death is the pretense of wisdom, and not real wisdom. It is ignorant for someone to believe that they knew what would happen to them after death. (Apology, 6). Not even Socrates, who believed that he was superior to men in ... Since the body contaminates and impure the soul, death would be separating these two entities and allows the soul to be pure again in its form without the body (Phaedo, 1 5). Additionally, Plato, explains that after death a true philosopher would hope to receive the greatest good in the other world (Phaedo, 1). I interpret this to mean that, after death there is still life in another world, and the reason we should not fear this is because we would also receive the greatest good where we end up. In contrast, Epicurus views focus living life with pleasure and happiness. Even if we are young or old, we shouldn t focus on death but instead our actions should be based off happiness. Typology is a form of study of literature identifying symbols especially in the Bible. This system of groupings, usually called types, the members of which are identified by postulating specified attributes that are mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive groupings set up to aid demonstration or inquiry by establishing a limited relationship among phenomena. During the Enlightenment, the meaning of Protestant identity became increasingly vague; typology took on the hazy significance of image and symbol; what passed for the divine plan had lost its strict grounding sculpture; providence itself was shaken loose from its religious frame work to became part of the belief in the human progress. It was during this time that people began fearing this war would be like the First World War in the sense of the rapidly spreading poisonous gas. Therefore, research into coal as filters for gas masks was urgent. This complex research proved to be valuable for her following work positions which dealt with more microstructures. Cambridge University awarded Rosalind a Doctorate based on her substantial research in this field of Physical Chemistry. Two years after receiving her Doctorate she moved to Paris where she found a job using X ray diffraction; this was generally used to determine the structure of crystal structures, but use began to explore the shape of structure less molecules. In 1950 she was invited to build an X ray diffraction laboratory at King s College and because of her expertise gained over the years, Rosalind was the lead researcher for specific X ray efforts. When Maurice Wilkins returned to his laboratory he immediately assumed that she was hired as an assistant to him. Both Wilkins and Rosalind started off on the wrong foot yet both researched DNA, but did not collaborate with their efforts. • 36. Senator Tim Scott Essay If I were to choose a figure in the government who I admire the most, that person would be Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina. Ever since I began to take an interest in politics, I always leaned towards the conservative side of the spectrum but everyone else around me identified as a liberal. As an African American male, it is hard to come out as a black republican, especially when you attend a Historically Black College. For the last couple of decades, the black community has tended to vote Democrat and when they see one of their own come out as a republican, they reject that person and instantly decry them. So many blacks who do share conservative views choose not to come out as republican, partly because of the backlash they expect to face. However, this is not the case of Senator Tim Scott. Increasing extracellular K+ causes the membrane potential to change to a less negative value because the K+ ions diffuse out across the membrane. The movie also showed how people feel loneliness and alienated because they aren t accepted for their differences. Horton Foote, the screenwriter, did an exceptional job of writing a script that was very similar to the book. The movie didn t take anything away from John Steinbeck s classic novel written fifty five years earlier. McDonald s plans to complete the transition to cage free eggs in the U.S. and Canada by 2025.1 The article not only brings cage free eggs into concern, but also raises heated discussion about whether hens should be bred in the cage free system or in the conventional way. In this essay, I will argue that it is a right choice to switch to the cage free system in terms of the animal welfare. Besides, I will suggest that the cage free system should be encouraged because eggs laid by hens raised in such system embraces better nutrition. Encouragement of cage free eggs is a bold move, but it is worth carrying out. In terms of the animal welfare, the cage free system treats hens in a more humane manner and ensures them a life with more freedom. An overwhelming majority of hens are limited in the conventional cages, where they each can share only 67 square inches of the cage space.2 67 square inches cannot even compare with a piece of letter size paper which takes up about 93.5 square inches. Such tiny space is not enough for hens to spread their wings, let alone make nests or perch. The conventional system shows a lack of certain humanity. • 45. Persuasive Essay On Bo Jackson Excellence One quote a person says can change the rest of one s life. More specifically, Bo Jackson, famous National Football League running back and Major League Baseball player has had his fair share of both success and well spoken quotes. Jackson had the ability to be a hall of famer in both of the sports, as he was one of the hardest workers to play the game and refused to be satisfied with anything less than superp. Bo Jackson s once said, Set your goals high and don t stop till you get there, contained some of the most inspirational words to flow out of a person s mouth. This quote demands the people to set their goals high, work relentlessly until their goal is achieved, and to be ambitious. Arguably, setting your goals high is what Bo Jackson was trying to say in his quote, and ultimately achieve greatness. Setting your goals high is so important, and there are so many reasons on why to do this. Primarily, setting high goals leads to the possibility for a greater return. This is because even if one works as hard as possible and miss the ultimate goal it is very possible that he will have had more success than if one only aimed for an easy tasks. Setting your goals high segues into the second reason, which is that it will generate more momentum to work. For example if one is to complete a small project in a week they might procrastinate until Rhinesmith 2 the last moment, naturally putting in less effort. However if someone is to be given a difficult tasks they will naturally work much harder to complete said task. When goals are set higher they will be placed at a higher standard if they receive greater effort, giving the goal purpose. When one realizes that the goal they are set to achieve has purpose, completing it will seem necessary. Working hard plays an extremely important role when attempting to achieve a goal. Hard work is demonstrated in the part of the quote where Jackson says, ...don t stop till you get there.. This quote was said by one of the hardest workers of all time, Bo Jackson, therefore this definitely plays a key role in success. • 47. Analysis Of Film Congo Paramount Pictures film Congo, adapted from the Michael Crichton novel of the same name, is one of the smartest parody of typical jungle adventure plots in cinema. Congo, after its release, has been criticized for try to piggyback off The success of Universal s Jurassic Park just two years earlier (James Berardinelli). Though the camp style, visuals, and acting, adds to the film s charm, while not undermining the viewer s intelligence with smart one liners and dialogue that holds weight between acts. This creates the feel of a B action movie on an A movie s budget. Large uncharted jungles, counties in political turmoil, and lost cities of dead civilizations, are settings that are archetypal to adventure films. Congo uses these settings to play with the movie s humor. With several sites such as the city of Zinj, clearly looking like it was shot on a sound stage in Hollywood, gives less believability to scenes filmed on location. Taking the gravity and the sense of danger from even the intense scenes. This is aided by the practical effects such as costumes of the silver back gorilla, and gray gorillas, with stiff movement and equally rigid expressions. Tied with minimal effect, such as an animatronic hippo in the night river scene, gives Congo the visual interpretation of a comedy. • 48. Public And Financial Advantages And Disadvantages Of Going... Business start as private, receiving investments from persons and venture capitalists. When a business decides to open its shares to the public, this changes the business from private to public , going public completely changes how a business operates. A business goes public when an investment bank approves the company for an initial public offering. The investment bank, or underwriter, becomes legally responsible for the shares and sells them to the public (Meilert, 2010). When a business is public, anyone can buy a share of that business on a public stock exchange. Thus, the SEC entails public businesses to reveal financial information through a public quarterly and yearly SEC filing. The advantages of going public is the financial benefit in the form of raising capital, to grow or expand the business. Another advantage is the public awareness of the business, by making their product known to potential consumers. Debt to equity ratios generally progress after going public which surges the businesses ability to get financing. Disadvantages of going public include, the time and resources to create reports, file paperwork and work with bank underwriters on the financial plans, going public can be very expensive. While having to maximize their output they are having to lowering their expenses. In the process the animals are being confined in small areas to help get them fatter and have to get them ready for market quicker. The animals are not being given the best environment or treatment. A lot of people do not realize how the animals being treated can affect us and they are only worrying about what they are going to eat. The sheer number of animals raised within confinement operations increases the transmission of infectious agents within flocks and herds and, by extension, between animals and human workers (Animal Welfare Institute). When the animals are kept in small confined areas it can cause them to get sick and when we eat the meat it could affect us. That may be reason behind why we get swine flu. When they give the animals medicine that is also used in human medicine, it can cause us to become resistant to the antibiotic. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year two million people in the United States contract antibiotic resistant infections (Animal Welfare Institute). The Table By Sylvia Plath Tone The Table, written in 1998 by Ted Hughes, is a free verse poem communicating the idea of loss, using the death of his wife, Sylvia Plath, as his form of expressing his experiences and interpretations of the topic. The change of tone from the beginning to the end of the poem assists the idea of loss, as well as the language used and the strong use of imagery. Ted Hughes wife, Sylvia Plath, struggled with depression for most of her life. Sex Education Vs Single Sex Schools Single sex schools, the new and improved way of learning In 2006 federal legislation allowed public school districts to create single gender schools and classrooms for their students. That was a wise decision considering single sex schools have been proven to benefit students. Although society insist that coed school is a superior learning style and is key to getting better grades they are wrong, single sex schools actually have a better history with the educational performance of their students and due to that their students are acknowledged to obtain a more profound career path. The main purpose of attending any type of school is to gain knowledge and further your knowledge successfully. In 2010, 78.2 percent of high school students in coed schools graduated on time. On the other hand the single sex schools received higher percentages across the board. Eagle Academy in New York, the state s first public all male school, reported an 82 percent graduation rate for the same time period. Correspondingly, the young Women s Leadership Charter School in Chicago reported a 100 percent graduation rate(NASSPE). The main cause for the percent differences are that students in single sex schools are less distracted by their peers and surroundings.
