BRAZIL: Latin America's largest maritime player

World population has increased 133% since 1960 while food production has increased 237% due to factors like rural to urban migration, improved life expectancy, and rising incomes. However, inefficiencies remain in the supply chain between producers and consumers. China is now the largest meat producer in the world while the US and Brazil have grains to feed their animals. Brazil accounts for 11% of global meat production with less than 3% of the world's population. Growth in Brazilian agricultural production will come from converting degraded pastures, intensifying livestock production, and using new technologies. This will help meet rising demand from China's social inclusion plan to lift 440 million people out of poverty by 2022.
Russia produces a significant portion of global wheat exports, around 25% in 2009. However, droughts and fires in recent years have reduced Russia's wheat production estimates for the current year from an initial 70-75 million tons down to 60-65 million tons, compared to 97 million tons produced in 2009. This decrease in Russian wheat supply has caused global wheat prices to increase as major importers like Turkey, Iran and Libya must seek supply elsewhere and speculators have driven up prices further by stockpiling wheat.
This document provides a history of American agriculture from the 18th century to the 1990s. It describes how agriculture developed from northern farmers producing a variety of crops and livestock to the south focusing on export crops. Significant events that impacted agriculture included the Irish potato famine, droughts, migration during wars, and farm financial crises. New crops from Europe were introduced, cotton replaced tobacco as the main cash crop in the south, and experimental work led to disease-resistant plant varieties and hybrid seeds. By the 1990s, biotechnology brought developments in commodities and genetically engineered crops. America became a major market for agricultural products from third world countries.

JUST two months on from our last review, the mood in cereal markets has shifted markedly from bear to bull – for the short term at least. The over-riding influence has been events in the former Soviet Union, where the risk of political upheaval turning to military conflict cast a shadow over grain exports from this important supplying region.
Grain prices have steadied in recent weeks after their long drop amid further signs that 2015/16 supplies will be ‘less loose’ than this season’s - if not exactly ‘tight’ by historical comparison.

The document discusses opportunities in Brazil's agribusiness sector, focusing on the state of Mato Grosso. It summarizes that Mato Grosso produces 31% of Brazil's soybeans and 16% of the country's corn. The state has high average yields for soybeans and low production risks. However, logistics infrastructure needs improvement, such as the BR 163 highway project. The document outlines several business opportunities in Mato Grosso, including in credit for farmers, grains storage, transportation infrastructure, and timber. It proposes next steps of understanding opportunities, agreeing on a plan, drafting an MOU, and evaluating support alternatives.

The world wheat market saw record production in the 2013/2014 year at 712 million tons of production compared to 656 million tons the previous year. Consumption also increased to 704 million tons. This led to higher ending stocks of 184 million tons compared to 176 million tons previously. The largest exporters like the US, Canada, and Black Sea region all saw changes in production levels, with Canada seeing a large increase. Global stocks remained at relatively normal levels. Local South African wheat is driven by imports, which make up 45% of consumption, and currency exchange rates.

Wheatgrass is a highly nutritious green that provides many health benefits. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins, antioxidants, chlorophyll and enzymes. Wheatgrass supports weight loss, detoxification, anti-aging and general well-being. It contains more nutrients than many other foods and is an excellent plant-based protein source. The active compounds in wheatgrass also have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and immune-boosting properties.
The document discusses the history, production, benefits, and components of wheatgrass. It notes that wheatgrass was discovered in ancient texts to have health benefits and was reintroduced in the early 1900s. It then describes how wheatgrass is grown and harvested, as well as its high nutrient and mineral content. The document lists numerous benefits of wheatgrass for detoxification, energy, digestion, and other health factors. It also details some potential initial side effects from its detoxifying properties.

SPECIAL EVENT
Discussion on the Key Findings of FAO’s 2019 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World Report
Co-Organized by FAO North America and IFPRI
JUL 18, 2019 - 12:15 PM TO 01:45 PM EDT
The document provides an outlook and analysis of agricultural commodity markets in 2020. It discusses:
1) The risk of a demand shock has quieted, and a supply shock is needed to change market sentiment as the major driver of demand growth over the past decade has ended.
2) South America dominates world grain and oilseed trade flows and supplies are currently adequate, with the U.S. acting as a price floor and transparent storage source.
3) The past decade saw unprecedented growth in global demand for corn, soybeans, wheat and vegetable oils driven by globalization, dietary shifts and biofuels, but this golden era of growth has ended.
Our Industry 2014 is packed with insights and useful facts, graphs and images from Syngenta and many external sources. It covers the global challenges relating to food security and includes sections on the major crops and on advances in agricultural technology.
Livestock production trends show that growth varies by geography. Estimates indicate that global compound feed production is approaching one billion metric tons.

The Director-General of the FAO provided a summary of the global food security situation and risks posed by the war in Ukraine in a presentation to G7 Agriculture Ministers. Key points included:
1) Nearly 200 million people faced crisis levels of food insecurity in 2021 according to the Global Food Crises Report.
2) FAO sees risks to global food/agriculture from direct conflict effects, macroeconomic factors, and humanitarian impacts.
3) Ukraine and Russia are major exporters of wheat, maize, and oilseeds, and their reduced exports are tightening global supplies and raising prices.
4) Many countries heavily rely on Ukrainian and Russian wheat and are seeking new suppliers.
5) The
Global Pulse Scenario: Consumption, Production and TradeICARDA
Global pulse consumption is increasing but per capita consumption is declining. Production is around 72 million tons annually from 80 million hectares, with the top five pulses (dry beans, chickpeas, dry peas, cowpeas, and lentils) accounting for about 80% of production. Yields are increasing in developed countries but stagnant in developing countries, where most pulses are grown. Trade in pulses is growing and around 12 million tons annually, with developed countries exporting 65% and developing countries importing 82%. Future outlook predicts global pulse demand to increase by 10-23% by 2030, requiring a doubling of yields or additional area to meet demand.

14 March 2016. Brussels. DevCo External Cooperation InfoPoint. An overview of the situation of food and nutrition security in the world today was presented. Special emphasis was given to the current situation of El Niño, current droughts in Africa South of the Sahara, and potential policies that need to be put in place in the future to minimize these and associated risks.
Introduction: Jean-Pierre Halkin, Head of Unit - DEVCO C1- Rural development, Food security, Nutrition
Presentation: Maximo Torrero, Director, Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, International Food Policy Research Institute
The document discusses four major crises - climate change, conflict, COVID-19, and high food costs - that are contributing to a potential global hunger crisis. Russia's war in Ukraine is blocking exports of wheat, sunflower oil, and fertilizers from those countries. Soaring energy and fertilizer prices driven by the pandemic and war are also increasing food costs. Transformation of food systems is needed to address these interlinked challenges through sustainable agriculture, reducing food waste, and alternatives to fossil fuel-based fertilizers. Both short-term measures like keeping trade open and long-term reforms are necessary to prevent widespread food shortages.

D1S1 Trends of the global grain market in 2015/16 MYEugene Tkachenko
This document provides an outlook on grains and oilseeds for May 2015. It discusses factors influencing prices, including winter weather risks in major exporting regions and currency movements. Supply remains high globally, weighing on prices, though demand is expected to improve. Corn plantings and yields in the US may fall after recent record highs, while soybean plantings are forecast to rise at corn's expense. Inventories are high but expected to draw down later in 2015 and into 2016, supporting prices, if weather cooperates.
This document discusses challenges to achieving global food security and nutrition goals, and the role of international organizations in supporting agricultural transformation. It notes that achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 will be difficult given pre-existing trends slowed further by COVID-19. Poverty and hunger are increasingly concentrated in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where agricultural productivity growth has been low. International organizations have played catalytic roles but face a crowded landscape with fragmented assistance. Agricultural transformation will require doubling investments in agriculture, supporting rural development, boosting domestic capacity, and promoting sustainable food systems through education, value chains, and payments for environmental services.
This document provides an overview of the business potential for Brazil to increase pulses production for the Indian market. It notes that India has a large and growing population with increasing water scarcity issues, making it reliant on pulses imports as a crucial source of vegetal protein. Brazil is well-positioned to meet this demand due to its favorable growing conditions, large arable land, and status as a major agricultural exporter following investments in productivity. The document examines trends in Brazil's agricultural trade surplus and outlines why increased pulses production could be an important strategic opportunity.
