Across the Atlantic, in Cleveland, Ohio, a larger and heavily
engineered machine was designed and constructed in the winter
of 1887–1888 by Charles F. Brush. This was built by his
engineering company at his home and operated from 1886 until
1900. The Brush wind turbine had a rotor 17 metres (56 ft) in
diameter and was mounted on an 18 metres (59 ft) tower.
Although large by today's standards, the machine was only rated
at 12 kW. The connected dynamo was used either to charge a bank
of batteries or to operate up to 100 incandescent light bulbs, three
arc lamps, and various motors in Brush's laboratory.
Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine
The rotating axis of the blades is perpendicular
to the wind stream.
The rotating axis of the blades is parallel to
the wind stream.
They are not self-start. All are self-start.
No need of Yaw mechanism for the movement
of turbine.
Yaw mechanism is installed to rotate the
turbine in the wind’s direction.
Rotating speed is low. Rotating speed is high.
Low tip to wind speed ration so low power
output.
High tip to wind speed ration so high power
output.
It can run on lower wind speed. It run on high wind speed.
