Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of wind into mechanical or electrical energy. They consist of blades, a shaft, gearbox, generator, and tower. As wind blows over the blades, they spin a shaft connecting to a generator that produces electricity. Larger wind farms connect to electrical grids to distribute power over broad areas. Wind turbines have advantages of being renewable and producing no emissions, but also have disadvantages of high costs, noise, and potential harm to birds.
