Unit 2 Probability and Distributions
Iesha Babers
American InterContinental University
Abstract
Many occasions can t be predicted with absolute certainty and the best way to say how likely
something will happen is to use probability. When you have a set of data that is well defined and
random probabilities can be used to describe statistical numbers of outcomes divided by the number of
all the outcomes.

The Tariff Of Foreign Goods
A tariff is a tax on foreign goods. The price of foreign goods increases with the tax, and provides
revenue for the government, which makes American products more appealing. This is because the
foreign goods that were cheaper are now more expensive. However, why was there a need for tariffs in
the early 19th century (1800)? The reason is because, American industries were young, Britain flooded
the US market with cheap goods after the War of 1812, and foreign goods have been often cheaper. In
order to make sure American businesses could prosper, there had to be tariffs on the foreign goods.
The tariff of 1816 was the first substantial protective tariff of the American System; supported by
Henry Clay, but opposed by John C. Calhoun and Southern cotton growers. The tariff of 1824
increased the rate of the protective tariff and opposition in the South grew. In the Tariff of 1828 (Tariff
of Abominations), there were higher protective tariffs to New England Mills; and Southerners were
outraged including Calhoun.
On July 11, 1804, a bullet from Aaron Burr s pistol put an end to the life of Alexander Hamilton.
However, it did not put an end to Hamilton s vision for America. In 1806, a twenty nine year old
Kentuckian entered the U.S Senate and breathed life into Hamilton s vision. His name was Henry
Clay. For the next forty years, the man whom Abraham Lincoln called My beau ideal of a statesman to
natiously strove to implement a federal economic policy that closely followed

The Greatest Generation Research Paper
The Back Bone of America
The Greatest Generation is just one of the names for this particular special group of people. They are
generally known as the G.I. (or Traditionalist) generation from the years of 1920 to 1945. Why are
they known also as the greatest generation? Because of the events that had happened during their time,
their values and work ethics would make them the greatest generation.
Events that had happened during their time that would help to make them great. They survived the
great depression and then would win the war in World War II. During the depression when the stock
market crashed, people lost their money and their properties. Many people lost their homes, farmers

country. In a very real way, World War II was a battle for American women to achieve direct
participation in the conflict. (91)
In doing so society realized that women could do some of the jobs considered just for men. Later at
the ending of the war the American people started the women and equal rights movement. Helping to

Dichotomy Of Order In The Lego Movie
Lego Paper The Lego Movie illustrates Friedrich Nietzsche s theory of the opposing Apollonian and
Dionysian impulses. The terms come from two gods of Greek mythology, Apollo and Dionysus.
Apollo representing order and stasis and Dionysus representing movement and instinct. In the movie,
the opposing impulses are manifested in the free spirited Master Builders and systematic Lord
Business. The battle between the Master Builders and Lord Business shows the two impulses in
competition, in the end both groups work together to create a balance between the two extremes of
anarchy and standardization. Friedrich Nietzsche used the terms Apollonian Impulse and Dionysian
impulse in his book The Birth of Tragedy to describe the dichotomy of order and ... Show more

Emmett s plan is to make an Octan delivery spaceship according to instructions in order to blend in
with all the other ones and sneak in the building. The Master Builders struggle with following the
instructions because it is an Apollonian impulse that contradicts their usual Dionysian style. Unikitty
wants to put flowers on the spaceship and Emmett has to remind everyone to stick to the instructions.
The lego characters are all an imaginative story of a young boy playing with his father s legos.
Emmett jumps off the top of Lord Business s tower and enters the real world where we see the boy
and his father. The boy follows his Dionysian impulse like the Master Builders and wants to mix the
sets of legos. The dad is Apollonian like Lord Business, the legos are not toys but his sculptures that
he wants to preserve with the Krazy glue. Just as Lord Business and the Master Builders compromise
and take on part of each others impulses, so do the father and

Home Message For Children And Parents
A key take home message is that preschool children (ages 3 4) need to engage in 60 minutes of
physical activity a day, in order to enhance their health and well being (Gabbard Rodrigues, 2008;
Canada Sport for Life, 2005; Oliver et al., 2007). However, this message is more aimed at the parents
of preschool children, because it is their responsibility to ensure that their child is participating in an
adequate amount of exercise (Klesges et al., 1990). Parents have demonstrated a positive correlation to
the physical activity of their children (Klesges et al., 1990). Therefore, those parents that provide their
children with a lack of encouragement, will notice decreased physical activity among their children
(Klesges et al., 1990). Consequently, parents need to support their children to engage in 60 minutes of
physical activity a day, in order to improve their health.
This is an important message for children and parents, as it aims to enhance the well being and health
of preschool aged children (Oliver et al., 2007). Participating in regular physical activity improves
bone health, aerobic fitness, and it is beneficial for the development of fundamental motor skills
(Oliver et al., 2007). Bone health is increased due to physical activity, because exercise provides bones
with more strength. This is important because as you get old your bones weaken, however if you begin
exercising during preschool years, you have a higher chance of making physical activity a habit,
which will

What Causes Pig Influenza
Every day brings a new challenge, a new lesson, and prayerfully, a new blessing. Good things come
but unfortunately, so do the bad. I remember just a few years ago hearing of people near and far being
infected with the swine flu, which is the transmitting of pig influenza into humans. It is also known as
swine influenza, pig influenza, or hog flu. This was devastating to hear. Being of a younger
generation, this was my first time hearing of something as drastic and severe as this. I began
wondering what caused this and why now? This disease destroyed the lives of many. Some begin
exiting their homes wearing masks, stocking on disinfectants, and covering up to prevent this
deadening disease. Hearing that this was not the first time that this ... Show more content on

Its significance began with the initial onslaught in 1347 to 1354. Frequent recurrences made it hard to
regain the balance of the middle ages, and the social pillars of the church, family life, and the
economy were changed forever. Monasteries and clergy suffered the greatest loss. The Europeans
began to blame God because they had no explanation for the outrage. Priests and bishops could not
give answers for what was happening so they abandoned their Christian duties and fled. This caused
the monasteries to be run by less educated people, who eventually resigned. As the church weakened,
so did the hope of the European people. Animosity between the Christians and Jews arose, art and
music became dark and depressed, and people became obsessed with cultural death. The rich and
poor, the young and old, man, woman, boy and girl were all impacted. No one was safe. No one could

Criticism Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald illustrates a picture of the American Society during the
1920 s. The 1920 s were a time of parties, drinking and having fun. Many had dreamed of becoming
rich and being part of the upper class. Although many wished to be part the upper class it was thought
to impossible as almost all of the upper class members in were born into it. In the Great Gatsby
Fitzgerald criticizes the American Dream by creating characters of all classes such as those from new
money, old money, and the working class who all fail to gain the freedom and happiness of the
American Dream. The old American Dream allowed before corruption allowed you to gain wealth,
power, and high status through hard work, and dedication. However, since time changes, so do values.
The American Dream had altered to materialistic aspects. These materialistic possession determine
how successful you are ,and shows it has rooted into the society. Fitzgerald shows this by showing us
the locations of where old money , and where new money live. Residents who live in West Egg are the
people who are referred to as new money as they usually have recently acquired their wealth , and are
lacking a social position. East Egg is home to those called old money who have posses wealth that has
been inherited through generations. Fitzgerald talks about how people from East Egg tend to have
more rights and respect than those who come from West Egg.

Research Paper On Portugal
Portugal
Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain and the Atlantic
Ocean. Its oceanside location influences many aspects of its culture salt cod and grilled sardines are
national dishes, the Algarve s beaches are a major tourist destination and much of the nation s
architecture dates to the 1500s 1800s, when Portugal had a maritime empire.
Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, was declared a city in the 1500s, and became an
important point between the old and new worlds. The laid back city owes much of its historical
prominence to white gold, Madeiran sugar. Today Funchal is known for its appealing temperatures,

As of today, it is the oldest country in Europe with the same borders. During the 15th and 16th
centuries Portugal started a major chapter in world history with the New World Discoveries. In 1419,
Portuguese explorer João Gonçalves Zarco, under the sponsorship of Prince Henry the navigator, set
sail en route for African Guinea and was thrown off course by a violent storm. The result of being
blown off course was the discovery of a small island that was named Porto Santo Holy Port as is was
this island that provided these navigators with shelter during the harsh weather.year later, a
neighbouring island was discovered and was given the name Madeira Island, which means wood .
Colonization began in 1420 and the first settlers consisted of families from the Algarve and prisoners.
Along with two other men, Tristão Vaz Teixceira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo, João Gonçalves Zarco
was responsible of colonizing the archipelago of Madeira. He took primary residence and was given
capitancy of Funchal, Tristão Vaz Teixeira took residence and was given captaincy of Machico, while

The Similarities Between First And Second-Wave Feminism
Other than the obvious time differences between first and second wave feminism, the real contrasts are
found in what it was the women, and men in some cases, were fighting for. First Wave feminists
mainly fought for suffrage, while their Second Wave sisters fought for a wider range of women s
rights. First wave feminism was brought on by the newly educated female population. Women s
experiences under colonization taught them to see themselves as citizens of oppressed nations, and
many entered into Nationalist politics on behalf of their beleaguered people. (123) Women activists
took an approach of social housekeepers; it was their duty as nurtures of the nation to be involved in
education, social work, public health, poverty, and so on. (126) First Wave feminists were concerned
with gaining access to vote in elections and on other important matters, they were concerned with
gaining access to higher education; they were concerned with temperance, since they were not well
protected under the law from, drunk, abusive husbands. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women now were educated, voting, and even aiding their states during war times. In the U.S. many
activists were fighting for similar issues addressed by the predecessors, however they were able to
take things further, since there was a precedent. Instead of just gaining access to higher education,
Second Wavers were pushing for Women s Studies classes and departments, and for prominent
historical women to be included in academia. Women in the U.S. were also beginning the enduring
battle of saving the environment. Second Wave feminists brought internal attention to the problems
caused by violence against women and by poor environmental practices.

Paleontology Research Paper
Paleontology, The science for Kids
Out of all of the topic we could have picked for research, I chose the topic of Geology, the study of
fossils. So Geology can be broken into multiple smaller realms of study. So I chose to research more
or paleontology. Ever since I was a child I had a deep fascination with dinosaurs, and any and ever
fact about them. It really is a piece of who I am. Even to this very day I love them. When I see the
word fossil, immediately my mind shoots to prehistoric, dinosaur fossils. There are plenty of kinds of
fossils, but this one is very significant to me. As a child I could answer any question about dinosaurs,
anything at all. As I was studying more about this topic this time around there were some very
important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The question is why? After doing research I couldn t find a definitive answer. It also depends heavily
on where those people lived. The over compensating question of why, would be to better understand
what came before us. If you are of a simpler mind it might be to figure out what these giant things are
and how I can get one. Now that my understanding and interest have grown with my age it might be to
better understand all of God s creations and understand as much as I can. Fossils, and Dinosaurs have
caught the human imagination. They are wonderful, fascinating, and thought provoking. Why wouldn
t you study them. Those original scientists, geologist said and examined if their theories were right.
Thats what encouraged them to examine fossils, prehistoric creatures ,dinosaurs, more closely. This
science makes massive strides, and then takes long, lengthily stale moments. A good example would
be what dinosaurs where first thought to look like, to what they look like now. ( see included
photographs ) or the descovery of new species. Scientists often find fossils, but are not quick to make
observations of life styles, diet, mating, colors. These are all question that are extremely hard to
observe when the animal in question has been dead for hundreds of millions of years... onward and
upward. So at this point its mostly theories. Examining others work in this science is extremely

International Criminal Law And International Law
Introduction:
International Criminal Law can be described as a public international law. It deals with international
and transnational crimes among the member states. The International Criminal Laws are designed to
forbid some kinds of conducts or behaviours generally viewed as very consequential atrocities. These
laws also make sure that the perpetrators of such heinous criminal conducts are accountable for their
acts. Mainly, the International Criminal Law deals with war crimes, genocide, crimes of aggression
and the crimes against humanity. Besides, the International Criminal Court (ICC) governed by the
Rome Statute, which is a multilateral treaty and serves as a foundational and governing document of
ICC. Another way, it can be described as an intergovernmental organisation and international tribunal.
The ICC is the headway through which International criminal law develops since its inception. It is
situated in The Hague in Netherlands. Currently, there are 122 states which are parties to the Rome
Statute, by ratifying the Rome Statute, states become member states of the ICC. The International
Criminal Law (ICL) has been started performing with Nuremberg Tribunal for War Criminals after
1945. Actually, the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials addressed war crimes, crimes against peace, and
crimes against humanity committed during the Second World War@. The International Military

I am here to explain an ultrasound, so that way you are not nervous. First, there are different types of
sound waves, and how they travel. There are transverse, longitudinal, and surface waves. The
transverse waves are a mechanical wave which means that the wave travels like an S wave sideways.
Longitudinal waves travel parallel to the direction the wave travels. When the longitudinal wave
travels it compresses through the particles in the medium that it passes through. Longitudinal waves
are like contractions because they can compress together really high, and or low which could make the
pain hurt more, or hurt very little. Surface waves move in circular motions around the medium. In an

What Is My Commitment Essay
My Commitment
The best day of my life was the day that I became a dad. Becoming a dad taught me so much. Most
importantly it taught me how to be committed to someone and an idea that you don t even know. I
remember when my girlfriend told me that she was pregnant. Although we had been seeing each other
for a while and not practicing safe sex, the idea of her carrying my child shocked me. She called me
up on a Thursday and asked me to come over her place because she wanted to show me something. I
had no idea what this something was. My girlfriend Natalie was always up to something and my best
guess was that she was going to show me these new pair of shoes that she got on sale. When I arrived
at her apartment, she had a different look on her face. For some reason I thought that the apartment

speaking and in a shaky voice I said, How did this happen? Did you do this on purpose? She looked at
me and I could tell that she was disappointed in me but I also knew that she was mad. She stood there
shaking her head. Then she started walking back and forth. I knew then that not only was she mad but
she was angry. She put her head down to stare at the ground for a moment and when she lifted her
head up she pierced her eyes at mine and she said, How the hell do you think this happened? We had
sex and you didn t use a condom and I didn t make you. Are you that stupid that you don t know how

How Does Darl Lose His Mother s Death
Jake Barns, in Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises, and Darl Bundren in William Faulkner s As I
Lay Dying both have a certain desire, throughout their respective novels, for the affection and
attention of a particular woman in their lives. For Jake it is Brett, and for Darl it is his own mother,
Addie Bundren. However due to unfortunate occurrences in their lives, they can no longer gain that
love and affection. Daryl and Jake both seek for the attraction of a woman in their life but due to
circumstances they cannot have that affection and both authors both present this idea of having an
increased desire for this you can no longer have through different complexities of thought and
sentence structure.

As his mother s life began to deprive more and more Darl feels as if a force ..was driving him from his
mother s death bed, never to see her in this world again (Faulkner, 15). Darl feels there is a wedge
between him and his mother that is continuing to grow and drive them further and further apart as she
continues to die. The other characters that narrate the story tell about the comparison between Darl
and his mother and believes that ...he was the only one of them that had his mothers nature, had any
natural affection (Faulkner, 15). The other characters see him as being the most similar to the mother
and the person who showed the most affection for his mother, but his mother continued to neglect him.
He sets out to try to and impress her and be the favorite. However Darl is envious of the affection
Jewel receives. He is angered because has no interest in the affection being granted. Darl says he ...can
not love my mother because I have no mother, Jewel s mother is a horse (Faulkner, 61). Darl is jealous
of the affection his brother got from his mother. His brother was abusive and violent and resented his
mother while she continued to try and show affection to Jewel. Hemingway makes sure to come
straight out and give us direct thoughts straight from the characters. Faulkner presents the same idea as
Hemingway but uses different thought process and different thought and sentence

The Cultural And Sub Cultural Influence of Narcotics Anonymous.
The Subculture of N.A is a life outside of any expectations formed by the main Cultural Influence. It

The N.A. also has norms although informal norms and positive sanctions. For example, if a member
of the group strays from the steps and relapses instead of punishment we show them extra love and

types of conduct which we should follow. If a Group member is sharing we don t butt in or comment
until they are done.
This group also has Mores to some extent. Many of our members are here because they were ordered
by the court. If these people don t attend and get there court sheet signed by the group leader they can

Everything about this subculture is different from the dominant culture. We have special beliefs and
goals that we struggle to accomplish everyday of our lives as where the dominant culture doesn t have
a constant battle to stay sober. The membership process is so easy for addicts. All you have to do is

and together ran away to Kagoshima. Insted of facing arrest on November 15, 1858, Saigo and Gessho
jumped from a skiff (boat) into Kagoshima Bay. The crew on the boat heard the splash when they
jumped, and then pulled them from the water. Saigo survived but sadly Gessho did not. Saigo was still
being hunted for arrest so he went into a three year internal exile on the small island of Amami
Oshima. He changed his name to Saigo Sansuke and the domain government declared him officially
dead. By 1861, Saigo was well settled into the local community. Some children had annoyed him into
becoming their teacher, and the kind hearted giant obeyed. Whitle he was there, he also married a
local woman, Aigana, and became a father. Suddenly, in February of 1862, Saigo was called back to
Satsuma. He cautiously left the island, his new family, and friends. Despite having a bumpy
relationship with the new daimyo of Satsuma, Saigo soon

The Driverless Car Industry
Assuming that I am an automobile manufacturer that currently only makes traditional gas powered
vehicles, investing in the production of a driverless car is an excellent idea for my company. Tesla,
Google, BMW, and scores of other prominent automobile manufacturers are already close to hitting
the streets with their versions of autonomous vehicles, and my company needs to be able to adapt to
that change and hyper competition in order to not fall victim to the market. This type of innovation
may be classified as sustaining due to the fact that a new market is not being created but, on the
contrary, it offers a cutting edge version of already existing technology. In this case, driverless cars
will replace regular cars, such as how cars replaced the use of horse drawn carriages. ... Show more

This relates to the Innovator s Dilemma by putting pressure on automobile manufacturers to decide
whether or not to implement their own version of driverless cars, ultimately sealing their fate to either
succeed or fail. Driverless cars could impact all stakeholders, but it may affect manufacturing and
legal stakeholders to a greater extent than the others. Manufacturing driverless cars is without a doubt
a whole other world than the conventional cars that we have at present, so making sure that the cars
are being manufactured as proficiently as they can be is essential. This also affects the legal side of the
matter, due to the fact that shoddy products may result in harm to the consumer, which may prove to

Honor Home Program Analysis
The next few programs require a conical amount of supervision than the aforementioned, and are
generally more lenient and flexible with the length of stay. Firstly, Y Passages program is another
program specifically for men. Applicants may have already been through one of the other programs
offered by the Y , but it is not required. These applicants generally are self sufficient, but may need
additional support to fully realize their goals and residents may stay for six to nine months. Whereas,
the Honor House is a residential program specifically designed for veteran men who are chemically
dependent. Qualifications for this program include the individual being deemed benefit eligible by the
Lebanon Veterans Association. Generally, the Y will accommodate the length of time per the needs of
the veteran.
There is a D.U.I. II program for both men and women at the Y . This is the program that I became
most familiar with for two reasons. One being that I had been through a similar program myself,
nearly a decade ago, therefore I feel that I have a unique opportunity with expressing genuine

The War Of Art By Steven Pressfield Essay
How does the author define resistance and what are its characteristics? (300 words) In his book The
War of Art, Steven Pressfield talks about resistance. He defines resistance as self sabotage of anything
in the lines of creativity, art, music, spirituality, and more. Pressfield describes many characteristics of
resistance in the first half of his book. First, Pressfield describes the first six characteristics as six I s:
Invisible, Internal, Insidious, Implacable, Impersonal, and Infallible. Pressfield believes that resistance
is invisible because it is something that can be felt but can never be seen. Pressfield also writes that
resistance is to be considered the enemy within because it does not come from an outside source.
Instead, it comes internally. He believes that it is insidious because it will tell you anything to stop you
from doing your work that you are trying to do. It is implacable because it can t be reasoned with and
it only understands power and its goal to prevent you from doing that work. It is an objective force of
nature that is inside everyone, and it is infallible because it will unfailingly point true north. He
explains that we can use it as a compass to guide us toward an important call or action. Pressfield also
gives a general rule of thumb saying that The more important a call or action is to our soul s evolution,
the more resistance we will feel towards pursuing it. Second, Pressfield describes resistance in broader
terms. He says that it

Emily Dickinson Alliteration
There s a certain Slant of light by Emily Dickinson is a poem describing the speaker s observation of
the light during a winter afternoon. Describing light might elicit a feeling of joy and happiness but
Dickinson s poem describes light is a gloomy manner. By using imagery and alliteration Dickinson
creates a feeling of disconcertment towards the light described in the poem. The first stanza provides
the setting of this poem. There s a certain Slant of light, Winter Afternoons (1 2) obviously tells the
reader that the setting is the a winter afternoon and that the speaker is describing the reflections of
light at this time of day. Another point to be noticed in these lines is the capitalized S in slant which

presses an oppressive connotation upon the light like in the beginning of the poem. the Air mentioned

Everything You Need to Know about Stars
A star is a sparkling bundle of gas bound by gravity into a solitary object and is fueled by atomic
combination at the center. There are trillions of stars in our universe and all are distinctive and
extraordinary. Their mass, color, shape makes them all distinctive but mass is the only thing that
makes them unique. There are numerous phases of stars life including main sequence stars, red giants,
white dwarfs, neutron stars, and dark holes. All stars additionally have a lot of varieties in each one
phase of life. The life of a star starts in a cloud, an incredible gathering of gas and dust. When enough
mass has aggregated into a solitary item, gravity compels the mass to crumple into the middle.
Because of weight and rubbing, the center gets so hot that it starts atomic combination and a protostar
is made.
HR Diagram
The age and the mass of stars enlighten everything concerning a stars physical properties and situation
into each of the classifications. The Hertzsprung Russell chart (HR Diagram) diagrams stars glows
over the stars phantom class. Radiance portrays how splendid the star is (I, II, III, IV, V); ghastly class
depicts its temperature (O, B, A, F, G, K, M). This chart is the most ideal approach to classify stars.
Protostar
A protostar is structured in the beginnings of a star. The protostar s gravity is answerable for making
stars thick. As the gravity of the protostar builds so does the compression of mass. As the thickness
expanded so does the temperature. In

1920s And 1950s Similarities
The 1920s and 1950s both starts out different and ends on different circumstances. The 1920s started
out with a wrongful lawsuit and ended with and economic shutdown. The 1950s started out with
fighting in wars against communism and ended with and economic growth. Both eras were a lesson
for society. The 1920s and 1950s has many differences and similarities between each other. The 1920s
was a time of economic growth, inventions, and spending money. During the 1920s, America was
renamed as new society and new standard of living (Foner, 773). Little did society know was that the
1920s was the reason for the Great Depression in the 1929. This time era had a rough start because
there was a prohibition on manufacturing and selling alcohol (Foner, 742). There also an awakening of
what America was really like for the immigrants, for example, the convictions of two Italians,
Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Nicola Sacco. Vanzetti and Sacco were accused of partaking in an armed
robbery and murder of a security guard (Foner, 768). This raises about the corruption of the
government, and how it destabilized basic American freedom because these men were seen as threats
to the American Life (Foner, 769). There were no evidence against Sacco and Vanzetti, yet they still
got the death penalty (Foner, 769). The 1920s were also famous for the Jazz Age and Roaring
Twenties (Foner, 769, 770). The flappers were women who were young and sexually liberated (Foner,
770). The speakeasies were nightclubs

Alternative Ending to Mockingjay Essay
Gale must be near, I can hear his heart pounding. I am running desperately through the emptiness of
what seems to be a corridor, it s all white, just like most of the Capitol security buildings. I take a

automatic and bright sliding door stands. I just hope that I am not being recorded by the security
cameras, because if I am, my life has already been condemned to die within a few minutes. No one
knows that I am here, except for Cinna. I am acting on behalf of his plan. So far, Cinna s plan is being

but I attempt to read it. It reads Remember Katniss, I m still betting on you .
Cinna. He must ve known about the door and the security passcode. It s good knowing that he s still
alive. What will happen to him if the Capitol finds out that he hacked into the security system,
intended for President Snow s use only. It s just a matter of a few seconds when the door in front
slides open.
Behind it, there is no white corridor, instead, I find myself trapped, again, in a very dark and small
room. The second my right foot steps inside the room, I notice that Gale is either unconscious or dead
laying on the floor, not moving, with blood all over his face, and his upper body being supported by a
bright and white desk. As I quickly walk towards him, I acknowledge blood fingerprints all over the

Essay on Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice
Figurative Language in A Work of Artifice by Marge Piercy
A clever trick, crafty device, or stratagem is how Webster s Encyclopedia of Unabridged Dictionary of
the English Language defines Artifice. Marge Piercy definitely used crafty techniques in writing A
Work of Artifice. In this poem, Piercy reflects on the growth of a bonsai tree, considering the molded
existence of what it is to what it could have naturally been. With deeper analysis of this poem, the
correlation between a bonsai tree and the shaped role of women within society becomes evident. The
poet introduces one specific metaphor in the beginning, comparing the growth of a bonsai tree to the
development of women. This single metaphor is supported throughout ... Show more content on

Every day as he whittles back the branches. This line from Piercy s poem produces a vivid and
detailed picture in the imagination of its readers. Readers visualize an incredibly precise little
gardener, as he diligently prunes the bonsai tree. Another of Piercy s lines is, could have grown eighty
feet tall on the side of a mountain till split by lightning. Again the reader is provided with detailed
illustrations and sounds that correlate with the picture. In this line, for instance, a magnificent tree
high above the skyline, destroyed both by a visual bolt of lightening and a booming crack of thunder
can be seen. Examples of imagery are abundant throughout Piercy s entire poem. As readers look at
the poem externally, the imagery is directly related to a vision of the bonsai tree. With further internal
analysis, it becomes evident that there is slight ambiguity within these lines, lending themselves to
have connotative meanings. In such a way, the sense provoking images the writer includes relate not
only to describing a bonsai tree, but also to explaining the role of women within society.
Specifically, the double meanings of the imagery can be deciphered through examination of the writer
s use of metaphors. Each of the descriptions about the bonsai tree can be applied to women. In the

Health becomes one of the public s main concerns for American people, hence we are becoming more
scrupulous to our diet. People believe that being overweight is the main cause of obesity. Therefore, it
is a common believe that processed food is the number reason of obesity. David H. Freedman,
however, opposes this view. He published his article How Junk Food Can End Obesity in the Atlantic
magazine stating that processed food is not as bad as we deem it is. Freedman claims that the whole
foods are equally fattening and unhealthy (507). As for my personal opinion, healthy is a very broad
term. Its definition is generalized to be having good health, not being sick or injured. Freedman makes
me question what would be classified as healthy foods. Would a food that provides our essential daily

However, by focusing on the concept of whole foods vs. junk foods, Freedman generalized junk food
as a whole to be healthy. It is true that there are certain processed foods have the proper daily
nutrients, but most of other processed foods are filled with unhealthy ingredients containing fats,
refined carbs, sugar, salt, and calories. Therefore, I feel that How Junk Food Can End Obesity is an
unfitted title for this article. Freedman also exaggerates the ability of the processed food: in fact, these
roundly demonized [fast food] companies could do far more for the public s health in five years than
the wholesome food movement is likely to accomplish in the next 50 (511). He is stating the processed
foods could make people become healthier in just a few years than the whole food would in decades.
Freedman has not only generalized the processed food to be healthy, but he has also generalized the
whole food to be unhealthy as well. As I have stated earlier, while the processed foods could provide
with all the necessary nutrients but it would be risky to say that processed foods are healthy as a

Follow Filial Piety In Confucianism
In the teachings of Confucius, there are concepts ranging from jūnzǐ to zhì, but the two key teachings
that are predominant in both Analects and Menzi readings are lǐ and xiào. Lǐ refers to having certain
rules to follow for proper behavior, while xiào refers to practicing filial piety with in ones family,
friends, and ruler. Furthermore, an example that shows lǐ is shown in Book Ten of the Analects,
showing how proper behavior has to be altered depending on the situation that one is in (Ivanhoe: 27).
Proper behavior has to be shown at all times, but there are distinct situations where more respectful
behavior is required. Overall, having rules for proper behavior keeps order within Confucius families,
rulers and essentially the universe. Having this proper behavior not only shows respect for others, but
it also shows how knowledgeable one is (Ivanhoe: 27).
Additionally, xiào is shown in the Analects by the way in which Book seventeen represents it. Analect
17.9 does not specifically talk about how to follow filial piety, but it provides an example on how
education will teach you how to follow filial piety (Ivanhoe: 44). Following filial piety in
Confucianism also keeps order in society, by assuring the people to respect their elders. This also
shows how everything is connected back to the family. Ancestors are very important with in the ...

therefore it should be followed (Menzi:

layers; the epicardium (made up of two tissue layers the visceral layer and serous pericardium layer).
This layer of the heart is made out of mesothelium which is a thin transparent layer that is a delicate
fibroblastic tissue and adipose tissue. This adipose tissue starts to get thickest over ventricular surfaces
where the hearts coronary and cardiac vessels are found. The center layer of the heart is the

cardiovascular muscle). The myocardium consists of ninety five percent of the hearts wall, which
consists of muscle fibers. The cells in the myocardium layer are muscle strands. The cardiovascular
muscle fibers structure bundles and whirl slantingly around the heart which is in charge of the heart s

blood moves all through the heart. The endothelium and endocardium have large veins that connect to
the heart. The heart is four chambers; two

HMGB1 And Alzheimer s Disease Analysis
HMGB1 is a prototypic damage associated molecular pattern (DAMP) protein highly secreted by
activated macrophages and monocytes as a cytokine mediator of inflammation. This DNA binding
nuclear protein is released both passively during cell death and actively following cytokine
stimulation. It is also implicated in both infectious and sterile inflammatory disorders [32 36] affecting
the central nervous system (CNS) such as in Parkinson s disease (PD) [37], multiple sclerosis (MS)
[38,39], ischemic stroke [40], traumatic brain injury (TBI) [41] and Alzheimer s disease AD [42 44].
HMGB1 activates cells by differential engagement of several membrane receptors including advanced
glycation end products (RAGE), toll like receptor 2 (TLR2), and TLR4 which are primarily
responsible for HMGB1 pro inflammatory activity and BBB impairment [45,46]. Specific to the
proposed work, several studies have clearly outlined the role of OS in the development of
microvascular and cardiovascular complications of 2DM [47].

A Brief Note On Animal And Horse Training

Animals Horse Training Seriously, Socrates?
Baylee Vaughn
Reality and Human Existence
Dr.
18 November 2016 In cross examining Meletus in ?The Apology? Socrates draws an analogy between
the training of horses and the moral education of the young. Seriously, a man having the intelligence
that has been attributed to Socrates, used this analogy to sway members of the jury of his peers that
would decide his guilt or innocence, and ultimately his life or death? To help the reader understand my
belief that Socrates reference to horses does not help his defense, but in fact, helped convict him, one
must understand the many different references to horses and horse trainers. The first reference to
animals by Socrates in ?The Apology? when he states that he met Callias who was rumored to spend
more money on Sophists than anyone else and asks him the question if his sons were animals?colts or
calves?a horse breeder of farmer could be engaged to make them excel. (The Apology 20b). This
statement he recounted was trying to convince the jury that he did not charge fees while those did. So,
he was innocent because he groomed for free? To evaluate the second reference, this direct quote from
Socrates: ?You condemn me to a great misfortune. Tell me does this also apply to horses do you think?
That all men improve them and one individual corrupts them? Or is quite the contrary true, one
individual is able to improve them, or very few,

  • 3. The Tariff Of Foreign Goods A tariff is a tax on foreign goods. The price of foreign goods increases with the tax, and provides revenue for the government, which makes American products more appealing. This is because the foreign goods that were cheaper are now more expensive. However, why was there a need for tariffs in the early 19th century (1800)? The reason is because, American industries were young, Britain flooded the US market with cheap goods after the War of 1812, and foreign goods have been often cheaper. In order to make sure American businesses could prosper, there had to be tariffs on the foreign goods. The tariff of 1816 was the first substantial protective tariff of the American System; supported by Henry Clay, but opposed by John C. Calhoun and Southern cotton growers. The tariff of 1824 increased the rate of the protective tariff and opposition in the South grew. In the Tariff of 1828 (Tariff of Abominations), there were higher protective tariffs to New England Mills; and Southerners were outraged including Calhoun. On July 11, 1804, a bullet from Aaron Burr s pistol put an end to the life of Alexander Hamilton. However, it did not put an end to Hamilton s vision for America. In 1806, a twenty nine year old Kentuckian entered the U.S Senate and breathed life into Hamilton s vision. His name was Henry Clay. For the next forty years, the man whom Abraham Lincoln called My beau ideal of a statesman to natiously strove to implement a federal economic policy that closely followed ... • 5. Dichotomy Of Order In The Lego Movie Lego Paper The Lego Movie illustrates Friedrich Nietzsche s theory of the opposing Apollonian and Dionysian impulses. The terms come from two gods of Greek mythology, Apollo and Dionysus. Apollo representing order and stasis and Dionysus representing movement and instinct. In the movie, the opposing impulses are manifested in the free spirited Master Builders and systematic Lord Business. The battle between the Master Builders and Lord Business shows the two impulses in competition, in the end both groups work together to create a balance between the two extremes of anarchy and standardization. The lego characters are all an imaginative story of a young boy playing with his father s legos. Emmett jumps off the top of Lord Business s tower and enters the real world where we see the boy and his father. The boy follows his Dionysian impulse like the Master Builders and wants to mix the sets of legos. • 6. Home Message For Children And Parents A key take home message is that preschool children (ages 3 4) need to engage in 60 minutes of physical activity a day, in order to enhance their health and well being (Gabbard Rodrigues, 2008; Canada Sport for Life, 2005; Oliver et al., 2007). However, this message is more aimed at the parents of preschool children, because it is their responsibility to ensure that their child is participating in an adequate amount of exercise (Klesges et al., 1990). Parents have demonstrated a positive correlation to the physical activity of their children (Klesges et al., 1990). Therefore, those parents that provide their children with a lack of encouragement, will notice decreased physical activity among their children (Klesges et al., 1990). Consequently, parents need to support their children to engage in 60 minutes of physical activity a day, in order to improve their health. This is an important message for children and parents, as it aims to enhance the well being and health of preschool aged children (Oliver et al., 2007). Participating in regular physical activity improves bone health, aerobic fitness, and it is beneficial for the development of fundamental motor skills (Oliver et al., 2007). Bone health is increased due to physical activity, because exercise provides bones with more strength. This is important because as you get old your bones weaken, however if you begin exercising during preschool years, you have a higher chance of making physical activity a habit, which will ... • 7. What Causes Pig Influenza Every day brings a new challenge, a new lesson, and prayerfully, a new blessing. Good things come but unfortunately, so do the bad. I remember just a few years ago hearing of people near and far being infected with the swine flu, which is the transmitting of pig influenza into humans. It is also known as swine influenza, pig influenza, or hog flu. This was devastating to hear. Being of a younger generation, this was my first time hearing of something as drastic and severe as this. I began wondering what caused this and why now? This disease destroyed the lives of many. Some begin exiting their homes wearing masks, stocking on disinfectants, and covering up to prevent this deadening disease. Hearing that this was not the first time that this ... Frequent recurrences made it hard to regain the balance of the middle ages, and the social pillars of the church, family life, and the economy were changed forever. Monasteries and clergy suffered the greatest loss. The Europeans began to blame God because they had no explanation for the outrage. Priests and bishops could not give answers for what was happening so they abandoned their Christian duties and fled. This caused the monasteries to be run by less educated people, who eventually resigned. As the church weakened, so did the hope of the European people. Animosity between the Christians and Jews arose, art and music became dark and depressed, and people became obsessed with cultural death. The rich and poor, the young and old, man, woman, boy and girl were all impacted. No one was safe. No one could help the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Criticism Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald illustrates a picture of the American Society during the 1920 s. The 1920 s were a time of parties, drinking and having fun. Many had dreamed of becoming rich and being part of the upper class. Although many wished to be part the upper class it was thought to impossible as almost all of the upper class members in were born into it. In the Great Gatsby Fitzgerald criticizes the American Dream by creating characters of all classes such as those from new money, old money, and the working class who all fail to gain the freedom and happiness of the American Dream. The old American Dream allowed before corruption allowed you to gain wealth, power, and high status through hard work, and dedication. However, since time changes, so do values. The American Dream had altered to materialistic aspects. These materialistic possession determine how successful you are ,and shows it has rooted into the society. Fitzgerald shows this by showing us the locations of where old money , and where new money live. Residents who live in West Egg are the people who are referred to as new money as they usually have recently acquired their wealth , and are lacking a social position. East Egg is home to those called old money who have posses wealth that has been inherited through generations. Fitzgerald talks about how people from East Egg tend to have more rights and respect than those who come from West Egg. Daisy had hoped to find happiness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Similarities Between First And Second-Wave Feminism Other than the obvious time differences between first and second wave feminism, the real contrasts are found in what it was the women, and men in some cases, were fighting for. First Wave feminists mainly fought for suffrage, while their Second Wave sisters fought for a wider range of women s rights. First wave feminism was brought on by the newly educated female population. Women s experiences under colonization taught them to see themselves as citizens of oppressed nations, and many entered into Nationalist politics on behalf of their beleaguered people. (123) Women activists took an approach of social housekeepers; it was their duty as nurtures of the nation to be involved in education, social work, public health, poverty, and so on. Pressfield describes many characteristics of resistance in the first half of his book. First, Pressfield describes the first six characteristics as six I s: Invisible, Internal, Insidious, Implacable, Impersonal, and Infallible. Pressfield believes that resistance is invisible because it is something that can be felt but can never be seen. Pressfield also writes that resistance is to be considered the enemy within because it does not come from an outside source. Instead, it comes internally. He believes that it is insidious because it will tell you anything to stop you from doing your work that you are trying to do. It is implacable because it can t be reasoned with and it only understands power and its goal to prevent you from doing that work. It is an objective force of nature that is inside everyone, and it is infallible because it will unfailingly point true north. He explains that we can use it as a compass to guide us toward an important call or action. There are trillions of stars in our universe and all are distinctive and extraordinary. Their mass, color, shape makes them all distinctive but mass is the only thing that makes them unique. There are numerous phases of stars life including main sequence stars, red giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars, and dark holes. All stars additionally have a lot of varieties in each one phase of life. The life of a star starts in a cloud, an incredible gathering of gas and dust. When enough mass has aggregated into a solitary item, gravity compels the mass to crumple into the middle. Because of weight and rubbing, the center gets so hot that it starts atomic combination and a protostar is made. With further internal analysis, it becomes evident that there is slight ambiguity within these lines, lending themselves to have connotative meanings. In such a way, the sense provoking images the writer includes relate not only to describing a bonsai tree, but also to explaining the role of women within society. Specifically, the double meanings of the imagery can be deciphered through examination of the writer s use of metaphors. Each of the descriptions about the bonsai tree can be applied to women. • 30. David H. Freedman Health becomes one of the public s main concerns for American people, hence we are becoming more scrupulous to our diet. People believe that being overweight is the main cause of obesity. Therefore, it is a common believe that processed food is the number reason of obesity. David H. Freedman, however, opposes this view. He published his article How Junk Food Can End Obesity in the Atlantic magazine stating that processed food is not as bad as we deem it is. Freedman claims that the whole foods are equally fattening and unhealthy (507). As for my personal opinion, healthy is a very broad term. Its definition is generalized to be having good health, not being sick or injured. Freedman makes me question what would be classified as healthy foods. Would a food that provides our essential daily nutrients ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, by focusing on the concept of whole foods vs. junk foods, Freedman generalized junk food as a whole to be healthy. It is true that there are certain processed foods have the proper daily nutrients, but most of other processed foods are filled with unhealthy ingredients containing fats, refined carbs, sugar, salt, and calories. Therefore, I feel that How Junk Food Can End Obesity is an unfitted title for this article. Freedman also exaggerates the ability of the processed food: in fact, these roundly demonized [fast food] companies could do far more for the public s health in five years than the wholesome food movement is likely to accomplish in the next 50 (511). He is stating the processed foods could make people become healthier in just a few years than the whole food would in decades. Freedman has not only generalized the processed food to be healthy, but he has also generalized the whole food to be unhealthy as well. As I have stated earlier, while the processed foods could provide with all the necessary nutrients but it would be risky to say that processed foods are healthy as a ... • 33. Follow Filial Piety In Confucianism In the teachings of Confucius, there are concepts ranging from jūnzǐ to zhì, but the two key teachings that are predominant in both Analects and Menzi readings are lǐ and xiào. Lǐ refers to having certain rules to follow for proper behavior, while xiào refers to practicing filial piety with in ones family, friends, and ruler. Furthermore, an example that shows lǐ is shown in Book Ten of the Analects, showing how proper behavior has to be altered depending on the situation that one is in (Ivanhoe: 27). Proper behavior has to be shown at all times, but there are distinct situations where more respectful behavior is required. Overall, having rules for proper behavior keeps order within Confucius families, rulers and essentially the universe. Having this proper behavior not only shows respect for others, but it also shows how knowledgeable one is (Ivanhoe: 27). Additionally, xiào is shown in the Analects by the way in which Book seventeen represents it. Analect 17.9 does not specifically talk about how to follow filial piety, but it provides an example on how education will teach you how to follow filial piety (Ivanhoe: 44). Following filial piety in Confucianism also keeps order in society, by assuring the people to respect their elders. This also shows how everything is connected back to the family. Located between the parietal and visceral layer is the pericardial fluid, this is emissions of pericardial cells that helps reduce friction between layers as the heart moves and thumps. The heart has three layers; the epicardium (made up of two tissue layers the visceral layer and serous pericardium layer). This layer of the heart is made out of mesothelium which is a thin transparent layer that is a delicate fibroblastic tissue and adipose tissue. This adipose tissue starts to get thickest over ventricular surfaces where the hearts coronary and cardiac vessels are found. The center layer of the heart is the myocardium (this layer is in charge of the pumping activity of the heart and is made out of cardiovascular muscle). The myocardium consists of ninety five percent of the hearts wall, which consists of muscle fibers. The cells in the myocardium layer are muscle strands. The cardiovascular muscle fibers structure bundles and whirl slantingly around the heart which is in charge of the heart s pumping activity. The internal layer of the heart is the endocardium (this is a flimsy layer of endothelium tissue overlying a thin layer of connective tissue). This layer gives a smooth coating layer to the chamber of the heart and spreads the valves of the heart. This smooth layer lessens friction as blood moves all through the heart. • 35. HMGB1 And Alzheimer s Disease Analysis HMGB1 is a prototypic damage associated molecular pattern (DAMP) protein highly secreted by activated macrophages and monocytes as a cytokine mediator of inflammation. This DNA binding nuclear protein is released both passively during cell death and actively following cytokine stimulation. It is also implicated in both infectious and sterile inflammatory disorders [32 36] affecting the central nervous system (CNS) such as in Parkinson s disease (PD) [37], multiple sclerosis (MS) [38,39], ischemic stroke [40], traumatic brain injury (TBI) [41] and Alzheimer s disease AD [42 44]. HMGB1 activates cells by differential engagement of several membrane receptors including advanced glycation end products (RAGE), toll like receptor 2 (TLR2), and TLR4 which are primarily responsible for HMGB1 pro inflammatory activity and BBB impairment [45,46]. Specific to the proposed work, several studies have clearly outlined the role of OS in the development of microvascular and cardiovascular complications of 2DM [47]. ... • 38. A Brief Note On Animal And Horse Training Vaughn 6 Animals Horse Training Seriously, Socrates? Baylee Vaughn Reality and Human Existence Dr. 18 November 2016 In cross examining Meletus in ?The Apology? Socrates draws an analogy between the training of horses and the moral education of the young. Seriously, a man having the intelligence that has been attributed to Socrates, used this analogy to sway members of the jury of his peers that would decide his guilt or innocence, and ultimately his life or death? To help the reader understand my belief that Socrates reference to horses does not help his defense, but in fact, helped convict him, one must understand the many different references to horses and horse trainers. The first reference to animals by Socrates in ?The Apology? when he states that he met Callias who was rumored to spend more money on Sophists than anyone else and asks him the question if his sons were animals?colts or calves?a horse breeder of farmer could be engaged to make them excel. (The Apology 20b). This statement he recounted was trying to convince the jury that he did not charge fees while those did. So, he was innocent because he groomed for free? To evaluate the second reference, this direct quote from Socrates: ?You condemn me to a great misfortune. Tell me does this also apply to horses do you think? That all men improve them and one individual corrupts them? Or is quite the contrary true, one individual is able to improve them, or very few, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
