as a highly accurate and exceptionally vivid memory of a moment. The theory of flashbulb memory
therefore distinguished flashbulb memories from the normal memories, as the flashbulb memories are
more vivid, detailed, accurate, long lasting and easily to remember, whereas the normal memories are
believed to be mostly unreliable and easily distorted. Brown and Kulik also suggested that, there may
be a special neural mechanism in the brain which triggers an emotional arousal because that event is
unexpected or extremely important.

theory and studies that oppose this theory so that the validity of the theory can be revealed.

Pi admits to the Chinese officials that he had killed the cook a day after the cook had killed his mother.
Though, when Pi mentions the blind Frenchman, it could be that Pi has imagined the cook, since He

tried to kill Pi, could also be portrayed as evil like the cook; which could have been one of the reasons
Pi had killed this man. Now, Pi is living the memory of the guilt that he has for killing and possibly

that he had killed two people, one man and one woman. These two people could have been the sailor
that was on the boat as well as Pi s mother. If Pi did kill and eat the blind Frenchman/cook when he
was blind it could be that he could not bear to watch the terror and fully admit to what he had done.
Though director Ang Lee, does not add this scene into the movie, possibly due to the fact Pi was blind
as well as the man or it would confuse the people who had not read the book. Though, Pi eating the
man would be an explanation of how he had gotten the energy and strength to get back onto land. Yet,
in the animal version Pi could be dreaming this scene in a different perspective. Just before readers
read that Pi is coming upon a carnivorous island, Martel writes about the dream rag that Pi uses
(Martel 236). Pi arrives on the human shaped island (Life of Pi), and calls it a mental delusion (Martel
257). The island would be another explanation of how Pi had gotten his strength back, due to the fresh
water and greens he had found and consumed. The body shaped carnivorous island, symbolizes the
cook due to the fact it would turn acidic like the cook when he made rash decisions like killing the
