Heavy water is water that contains deuterium, a stable isotope of hydrogen that has a nucleus containing one proton and one neutron, rather than the single proton found in regular hydrogen. Heavy water has the same chemical formula (H2O) as regular water but is heavier. High concentrations of heavy water can be toxic to living organisms by slowing down metabolic processes. Heavy water is used as a neutron moderator in nuclear reactors because its heavier deuterium atoms are less likely to absorb neutrons than regular water.
