Existing technologies and industries can be combined to achieve an environmental trifecta: 1) mitigating climate change by sequestering (locking up) CO2, 2) eliminating brine disposal from brine desalination operations, and 3) preventing the salinization and acidification of groundwater and surface waters resulting from road salting, acid precipitation, and acid mine drainage.
The “Carbon Negative Water Solutions environmental trifecta” has three main components detailed as follows:
1) The sequestration of carbon from flue stack capture (FSC), or direct air capture (DAC), of CO2, subsequently incorporated into solid carbonate mineral [MCO3 or MHCO3], or into increased naturally dissolved bicarbonate (HCO3) in groundwater, surface water, and oceans. Dissolved HCO3 can be incorporated into algae for biofuel, fertilizer, or feedstock production.
2) Elimination of brine disposal from both seawater and groundwater brine desalination operations. The most common technology for this step usually involves 1) the electrolysis of brine, producing a base MOH, and 2) the aeration of CO2 gas forming carbonic acid, which reacts with the base to produce a carbonate salt [MCO3 or MHCO3]. Various HxClx marketable byproducts are produced, including H2, Cl2, HCl, and ClOx. The H2 can supplement the hydrogen economy.
3) Prevention of the salinization and acidification of groundwater and surface waters resulting from road salting, acid precipitation, and acid mine drainage. MHCO3 replacing MCl in road salting operations provides non-point source application of bicarbonate for the neutralization of acid precipitation. The elimination of MCl salts prevents the chloride salinization of groundwater and surface waters. MHCO3 can also be applied locally, providing point source application for the neutralization of acid mine drainage point sources.

Design for Energy Efficiency: Energy requirements of chemical
processes should be recognized for their environmental and economic

economically practicable.

because such steps require additional reagents and can generate
waste.
Catalysis: Catalytic reagents (as selective as possible) are superior to
stoichiometric reagents.
Design for Degradation: Chemical products should be designed so
that at the end of their function they break down into innocuous
degradation products and do not persist in the environment.
Real-time analysis for Pollution Prevention: Analytical methodologies
need to be further developed to allow for real-time, in-process
monitoring and control prior to the formation of hazardous substances.
Inherently Safer Chemistry for Accident Prevention: Substances and
the form of a substance used in a chemical process should be chosen
to minimize the potential for chemical accidents, including releases,
explosions, and fires.[8]
Green chemistry in day-to-day life
Green Dry Cleaning of Clothes: Perchloroethylene (PERC) is commonly
being used as a solvent for dry cleaning. It is now known that PERC
which contaminates ground water and is a suspected carcinogen.
A technology, known as Micell technology developed by Joseph De
Simons, Timothy Romark, and James McClain made use of liquid CO2
and a surfactant for dry cleaning clothes, thereby replacing PERC. Dry
cleaning machines have now been developed using this technique.
Micell Technology has also evolved a metal cleaning system that uses
CO2 and a surfactant thereby eliminating the need of halogenated
solvents. [9]
Versatile Bleaching Agents: It is common knowledge that paper is
manufactured from wood (which contains about 70% polysaccharides
and about 30% lignin). For good quality paper, the lignin must be
completely removed. Initially, lignin is removed by placing small
chipped pieces wood into a bath of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and
sodium sulphide (Na2S). By this process about 80-90% of lignin is
decomposed. The remaining lignin was so far removed through
reaction with chlorine gas (Cl2). The use of chlorine removes all the
lignin (to give good quality white paper) but causes environmental
problems. Chlorine also reacts with aromatic rings of the lignin to
produce dioxins, such as 2,3,4-tetrachloropdioxin and chlorinated

ANALYSIS OF BOD OF WATER
Use glass bottles having 60 mL or greater capacity. Take samples of water.
Turn on the constant temperature chamber to allow the
controlled temperature to stabilize at 20°C ±1°C.
Record the DO level (ppm) of one immediately.
Place water sample in an incubator in complete darkness at 20 C for 5 days. Exclude all light to prevent possibility of photosynthetic production of DO
If don't have an incubator, wrap the water sample bottle in aluminum foil or black electrical tape and store in a dark place at room temperature (20o C or 68 °F).
DILUTION OF SAMPLE
Most relatively unpolluted streams have a BOD5 that ranges from 1 to 8 mg/L
Dilution is necessary when the amount of DO consumed by microorganisms is greater than the amount of DO available in the air-saturated.
If the BOD5 value of a sample is less than 7 mg/L, sample dilution is not needed.
The DO concentration after 5 days must be at least 1 mg/L and at least 2 mg/L lower in concentration than the initial DO
(American Public Health Association and others, 1995).
BOD of the dilution water is less than 0.2 mg/L.
Discard dilution water if there is any sign of biological growth.
pH of the dilution water needs to be maintained in a range suitable for bacterial growth
Bacterial growth is very good between 6.5 to 7.5
Sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide may need to be added to the dilution water to lower or raise the pH, respectively.

Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes
on Io’s surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes.
Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a groundbased telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large
Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io’s trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images
show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part
of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. The SHARK-VIS instrument ushers in a new era of high resolution imaging of Io’s surface using adaptive
optics at visible wavelengths.

Since the loophole-free Bell experiments of 2020 and the Nobel prizes in physics of 2022, critics of Bell's work have retreated to the fortress of super-determinism. Now, super-determinism is a derogatory word - it just means "determinism". Palmer, Hance and Hossenfelder argue that quantum mechanics and determinism are not incompatible, using a sophisticated mathematical construction based on a subtle thinning of allowed states and measurements in quantum mechanics, such that what is left appears to make Bell's argument fail, without altering the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. I think however that it is a smoke screen, and the slogan "lost in math" comes to my mind. I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.

Deep Behavioral Phenotyping in Systems Neuroscience for Functional Atlasing a...Ana Luísa Pinho
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) provides means to characterize brain activations in response to behavior. However, cognitive neuroscience has been limited to group-level effects referring to the performance of specific tasks. To obtain the functional profile of elementary cognitive mechanisms, the combination of brain responses to many tasks is required. Yet, to date, both structural atlases and parcellation-based activations do not fully account for cognitive function and still present several limitations. Further, they do not adapt overall to individual characteristics. In this talk, I will give an account of deep-behavioral phenotyping strategies, namely data-driven methods in large task-fMRI datasets, to optimize functional brain-data collection and improve inference of effects-of-interest related to mental processes. Key to this approach is the employment of fast multi-functional paradigms rich on features that can be well parametrized and, consequently, facilitate the creation of psycho-physiological constructs to be modelled with imaging data. Particular emphasis will be given to music stimuli when studying high-order cognitive mechanisms, due to their ecological nature and quality to enable complex behavior compounded by discrete entities. I will also discuss how deep-behavioral phenotyping and individualized models applied to neuroimaging data can better account for the subject-specific organization of domain-general cognitive systems in the human brain. Finally, the accumulation of functional brain signatures brings the possibility to clarify relationships among tasks and create a univocal link between brain systems and mental functions through: (1) the development of ontologies proposing an organization of cognitive processes; and (2) brain-network taxonomies describing functional specialization. To this end, tools to improve commensurability in cognitive science are necessary, such as public repositories, ontology-based platforms and automated meta-analysis tools. I will thus discuss some brain-atlasing resources currently under development, and their applicability in cognitive as well as clinical neuroscience.
