This document provides an overview of library catalogs and classification systems. It defines a library catalog as a database containing all items in a library. Catalog records display pertinent information for each item, such as books, DVDs, or ebooks. Common searches in catalogs include keyword, author, title, and subject field searches. The document discusses controlled subject vocabularies and provides examples of browsing the Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal classification systems to locate physical materials on shelves in libraries.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Library Catalogs Basic Facts
A library catalog is a database that contains all of the items located in a
library as well as all of the items to which the library has access.
A catalog record displays information that is pertinent to one item, which
could be a book, a journal, a government document, or a video or audio
recording.

3. Library Catalogs Basic Facts
A catalog allows you to search for items such as title, author, subject,
and keyword.
A library catalog can contain
books
DVDs
Ebooks
Other types of formats/objects: artworks, music recordings or
films are two examples
4. Common Catalog Searches
Keyword Searches – using a phrase or keywords to find records
Field searching in specific fields
5. Keyword Searching
Keywords: one word or a few words that describe your topic or subject
Keyword searches can help you find relevant subject terms in book records
6. Keyword Searching
You will often begin a catalog
search with Keyword Searching
A Keyword search looks for words anywhere in the record. Keyword searches
are a good substitute for a subject search when you do not know the
standard subject heading.
Keyword may also be used as a substitute for a title or author search when
you have incomplete title or author information. You may also use the Guided
Keyword search option to combine search elements, group terms, or select
indexes or fields to be searched.
(from http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/help/clio/keyword.html
7. Field Searching
Field Searching is another common way to begin a
catalog search
Field Searching is common in library catalogs
This means you search by specific fields in a record:
Four fields commonly used: keyword author title subject
9. Different Fields in RHC Catalog
Subject field searching
is a great way to find
books or background
sources about a topic.
Author Search to find
books by specific
author
Keyword Search – can
be good to use starting
a search, and to find
subject terms
11. Subject Terms – Controlled Vocabulary
If you search by subject in an academic library
catalog you can take advantage of the controlled
vocabulary created by the Library of Congress.
Controlled vocabulary consists of terms or
phrases that have been selected to describe a
concept.
[p. 18, Information Literacy User’s Guide]
13. LC Subject Headings Online
A search in LC Subject Headings for same topic: Pet Therapy
LC Link
Website: http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects.html
14. Subject Terms – Controlled Vocabulary
For example, the Library of
Congress has selected the phrase
“Motion Picture” to represent
films and movies.
Enter the phrase “Motion Picture” into the search box.
Controlled vocabulary
is important because
it helps pull together
all of the items about
one topic
[p. 18, Information Literacy User’s Guide]
15. Numbers of Records - Library Catalogs
Library catalogs contain fewer records than databases [which we will look at
Week 4] and definitely less resources than the Web.
See much smaller search results [136 books] compared to millions you would
find on Web
Keyword search for “renewable energy”
16. Other Library Catalogs
CSU Los Angeles Catalog Whittier Public Library
Examples of other library catalogs
18. Retrieving Materials
Call Numbers are used to put physical materials on the
shelf in order in most libraries
This is usually by subject
Example of Dewey Decimal
System
19. Library of Congress
Divides knowledge into 21 broad categories
Each letter category represents a subject
These are broken down into more specific subject areas
Example of Subject subclasses in LC system
20. Call Numbers
Library of Congress -- letters and
numbers are used for book numbers
Dewey Decimal -- numbers are used
21. Dewey Decimal System
Divides knowledge into 10 broad categories
Broad categories include: 100 philosophy and religion
300 social sciences 700
These are broken down into more specific subject areas

22. Browsing the Shelves
The Dewey System was
developed in part to provide
open access to shelves for
patrons. Prior to this, library
shelves were restricted to few
patrons and materials had to be
retrieved.
Today we can ‘browse the
shelves’ but before the Dewey
system, this was often not
possible.
