- 6. Keyword Searching You will often begin a catalog search with Keyword Searching A Keyword search looks for words anywhere in the record. Keyword searches are a good substitute for a subject search when you do not know the standard subject heading. Keyword may also be used as a substitute for a title or author search when you have incomplete title or author information. - 11. Subject Terms – Controlled Vocabulary If you search by subject in an academic library catalog you can take advantage of the controlled vocabulary created by the Library of Congress. - 22. Browsing the Shelves The Dewey System was developed in part to provide open access to shelves for patrons. Prior to this, library shelves were restricted to few patrons and materials had to be retrieved.
