Webinar: Measuring Program Outcomes: A Toolkit for Small Libraries-2016-05-04TechSoup
Public libraries offer vital services to the community that provide opportunities for education, lifelong learning, literacy, digital skills, workforce development, and youth development. In order to gain and retain funding, libraries should have data to support their stories of success and positive impact on the lives of community members. Outcome measurement is a process which provides libraries with data that can be used for advocacy, programming decisions, and planning, so the library can communicate clearly and make improvements to programs and services. Outcome measurement can be a big undertaking, but a new toolkit has been developed to help libraries easily and effectively survey patrons to learn the true impact of their programs.
This free webinar provides an overview of outcome measurement from Project Outcome, a new program from the Public Library Association, that provides simple tools so libraries can measure programs across seven common service areas.

Instagram is a highly popular social network, and one that is increasingly being used by libraries to engage with patrons and supporters. Instagram's user-friendly interface makes it easy to broadcast pictures and short videos to a wide audience. But just like any social media tool, it is important to know what works (and what doesn't) when it comes to using Instagram to share library information.
Come to this free webinar to learn from two libraries who have been successfully using Instagram to engage with their communities, and to share positive library messages with the larger community of Instagram users across the world. From promoting library materials to showcasing library services, these libraries will share good practices that they have learned along the way.
-- Burlingame Public Library (CA) uses their Instagram account to share its unique story visually through a combination of captivating photos and videos.
-- Cherry Hill Public Library (NJ) uses their Instagram account to promote library materials and services, celebrate libraries in general, and to convey a love of reading and books.

Webinar - Protecting Patron Privacy in Public Libraries - 2017-03-16TechSoup
Visit http://www.techsoup.org for donated technology for nonprofits and public libraries!
What is your library doing to provide a secure digital environment for library patrons? How is your library protecting the privacy of patrons in this digital world? Patron privacy is of critical importance to libraries, and should be a foundational principle guiding library policy and practice. It is included in the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics and the Library Bill of Rights. As technology changes rapidly, libraries and librarians are working hard to keep up with digital security issues to better protect the privacy of their users. But this is not an easy task.
Watch this free webinar to learn about patron privacy issues in public libraries. This webinar explores two key areas of patron privacy: public access technology and the collection of patron data. Our guests share practical tips and advice on how to better protect patron privacy. We also share recommended resources for continued learning on this topic.
-- Bill Budington, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), talks about digital security issues that impact patron privacy in public libraries, and shares tools and information from EFF that can be useful for libraries.
-- Chuck McAndrew, IT Librarian at the Lebanon Public Libraries (NH), shares actions he has taken at this small library to better protect patron privacy and to teach library users (how to better protect their own privacy).

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
Technology transforms NGOs
When they can get it
When they can learn how to use it
When it can accelerate their work
Several factors elevate NGOs’ need for help with technology:
Economic gaps
The rapid evolution of technology
An abundance of tech choices that can overwhelm and confuse (the cloud, mobile, so many options)
NGO staff may be skilled in an issue or a service, but are not always tech experts
Technology companies are willing and often eager to donate products and services, and there are NGOs who need the technology. However, to connect companies and NGOs remains a challenge.
Access to technology is essential, but context is key: NGOs need local technology “know-how” and support
For NGOs to use technology effectively, they need solutions. TechSoup Global works with many NGOs and many partners to create solutions that are easy to share, replicate, and scale.
“Today, technology is the social catalyst empowering communities in all corners of the globe to improve their lives and shape their collective future. Modern technology is opening floodgates of information and influence historically reserved only for those in power.” – Jeff Skoll, philanthropist and social entrepreneur, founder of Skoll Foundation and first president of eBay.

TechSoup Global is dedicated to serving the world’s NGOs. The need is global and so are we.
Our mission statement: We are working toward a time when every social benefit organization on the planet has the technology, resources, and knowledge it needs to operate at its full potential.
We were founded in 1987 (that’s a long time ago!...and especially impressive for an NGO) and have consistently upheld a mission of social sector capacity building. But it that has evolved over time, from matching volunteer geeks with NGOs, to running the world’s largest tech donations program, to NGO eligibility services globally, to helping NGOs move to the cloud. Additionally, we have over 200 employees, and offices in San Francisco, Warsaw, and London. We are a sustainable social enterprise with 85% earned revenue.
TechSoup Global doesn’t just help NGOs overcome barriers to effective use of technology. We also help NGOs overcome language, economic, geographic, cultural, knowledge, and access barriers.
We create new ways to access technology, new paths to connect and network, and new means to learn and develop skills — all so that NGOs can operate at their full potential, more effectively deliver their programs and services, and better achieve their missions.
Our work and our impact are worldwide.

An innovative triple-win business model
Charities obtain products, relevant content and support, and a forum for collaboration
Corporations gain an effective and efficient distribution channel for CSR activities
TechSoup network is sustained by charging a low administrative fee
My colleague here in the UK, William Hoyle of Charity Technology Trust recently shared this quote with me from one of your government officials:
“By private sector outsourcing CSR to an organisation that can develop a business model around it, the business offers an opportunity for greater social impact.”
A great endorsement of our model, although he didn’t know it at the time.
