Web Design Assignment: Wiki and Marshall Server
For this assignment, we were shown how to first open a Wikispaces account, and create a
Wiki. We learned how to edit the setting of our Wiki such as set up and background, and set up
our Wiki the way that we preferred it. We learned how to upload links and projects through
embedded codes, and set up our Slideshare account to do so.
We also used a word document to create our own webpage through Marshall. We were
shown how to assess our v-drive on the Marshall University Server and how to save files to it.
We learned that everyone connected with Marshall has a space for them, on the server, to create
their own webpage. We used word to design our page, add a picture and link it back to
Marshall’s homepage.

Web Design Reflection:
!
When we were first given this assignment, I was very interested it it, because I had ever
been shown the Marshall server, V-drive, or how to create a Wiki. The idea of having a webpage
online that absolutely anyone could access was very exciting to me. As I worked on my Wiki, I
knew that it was going to be very much work, but I love the idea of having all of my assignments
that I created all saved together for mine, and anyone else’s access.I found that throughout the
semester, that if I just uploaded my assignments as I finished them, that it would be much less
time consuming in the end. There were only a few assignments at the end of the semester, that I
delayed my working on, which in turn piled up as extra work. Therefore if I were to go back and
change anything about how I worked on this assignment, I would make sure that I kept up with
all of those last assignments, as they were given. This web design assignment would most
definitely fall under the project based learning pillar of 21st century education, because it focuses
on the student’s final outcome of work, rather than on lectures and exams. One could also place
this assignment under the critical thinking pillar as well, due to the aspect of learning through
exploration, which is exactly what we did while jumping into this assignment. We were able to
investigate and work with both of these programs, the MU server, as well as the Wiki, in order to
make something that we were hopefully proud of, while learning how to use them. In as
classroom, as a teacher, I could use this assignment in many ways. One way I would use a Wiki
in my classroom, would be for presenting children’s work. If each child in a classroom was
taught how to create pages and upload onto a wiki, each assignment could have it’s own page
throughout the school year. This page could be used as a reference later on, or even as a tool for
parents to view their children’s work. If I were using a similar assignment for a classroom of
students, I would alter it in the aspect of group work on it. Rather than telling children how to
use and upload their assignments and work, I would most likely use computers or iPads in a
classroom to work with children as they uploaded and worked with it.
