Vladimir Propp analyzed over 100 Russian fairy tales and identified 31 narrative functions or spheres of action that frequently occurred. He suggested there are typically 7 main character types that take on these functions: hero, villain, donor, helper, princess, dispatcher, and false hero. The spheres of action generally follow a pattern of introduction, body of the story, donor sequence, and hero's return. Having studied this narrative theory, the document's author plans to incorporate more characters and themes of old vs young in their short film to help move the narrative along.
