Todorov proposed that all narratives have three basic stages - an initial equilibrium, a disruption to that equilibrium, and a resolution that establishes a new equilibrium. This theory is then demonstrated by summarizing the plots of two movies, 27 Dresses and The Hangover, in three sentences according to Todorov's three stages. Propp studied Russian fairytales and identified eight character archetypes that are often present, including the hero, villain, donor, and princess. His theory is then briefly applied to the characters in Star Wars. Vogler identified 12 stages of the classic hero's journey narrative structure based on his analysis of many films, which became very influential in Hollywood screenwriting.
