Narrative Theories:
A narrative in a media text is how the story/plot is told, this could be fictional or non-
fictional.
There is a difference between a story and a narrative. A story is a substance of a
plot, on the other hand a narrative is how the plot is connected - how one sequence
of the plot is connected to the other, and the smooth movement between scenes
leading into the next. The narrative is the way in which the story relates and
connects, using the links and connections within the narrative, the audience is able
to make their own interpretations which are affected by their real life experiences and
partly through influences from other similar texts.
Hartley - ‘Genres are agents of ideological closure; they limit the meaning of a
potential of a given text’ - e.g classic westerns expected roles of stock characters
limits the unexpected developments of the narrative. For example gay cowboys.
Conventions of a narrative:
- Genre - The genre sets the plot, it gives the audience an idea of what they
should expect in the narrative.
- Character - the presentation of a character allows the audience to interpret
what the character will be doing during the film.
- Form - The form allows the audience to recognise a structure that the
film/trailer follows.
- Time - Narratives do not follow a real time structure.
Conventions are understood best through the experiences of the audience, this may
be their own experiences or through other texts, this allows them to understand
these conventions.
Propp’s Character Theory
Vladmir Propp was a Russian critic in 1920, while the cinemas were producing films,
Propp was interested in narratives of folk tales. He made a link between similar
folktales and identified a theory about characters and actions/purposes as a
narrative theory creating ‘Propp’s Character Theory’.
This theory focuses on the roles of characters within a film/trailer. Traditionally, the
characters are broken down into: The hero, villain, dispatcher, doner, helper,
heroine, false hero, the princess, and her father. These characters all have a
purpose within a film/trailer, for example, the hero always tends to seek for
something, whereas the false hero tries to delay the hero’s success in claiming that
thing. The Donor, being the one who helps provide the hero with magic. This theory
adapts well with Harry potter for example. However, this theory does not fit with my
trailer (narrative) as I only have two characters who are introduced in my trailer,
meaning they do not fit the categories of this theory.
Tzvetan Todorov:
Todorov’s narrative theory claims that most stories/plots follow the same pattern or
path. There are typically 5 steps to this pattern.
1. Equilibrium - The first part of the trailer/film will reveal a happy start, where
everything seems positive and how it should be.
2. A disruption - The second part of the story will be followed by a disruption,
where something goes wrong, or seems off overlapping with the happiness.
3. Realisation - This part of the plot reveals people recognising the problem.
4. Restore order - This is when the characters attempt to restore the problem
and solve it.
5. Equilibrium again - This is the final of the plot, where the problem is solved by
the characters.
My trailer is similar to that of Todorov's narrative theory. However, my teaser trailer is
different, as it does not cover the ‘restore order’ or ‘equilibrium again’ crossing those
two out. Therefore my trailer would follow the structure of Equilibrium (where Ella
and Grace are happily playing in the park), a disruption (where Ella pushes Grace),
and realisation (where Grace is aware that Ella pushed her and is not acting herself).

Realisation - This part of the plot reveals people recognising the problem. 4. Restore order - This is when the characters attempt to restore the problem and solve it. 5. Equilibrium again - This is the final of the plot, where the problem is solved by the characters. My trailer is similar to that of Todorov's narrative theory. However, my teaser trailer is different, as it does not cover the ‘restore order’ or ‘equilibrium again’ crossing those two out. Therefore my trailer would follow the structure of Equilibrium (where Ella and Grace are happily playing in the park), a disruption (where Ella pushes Grace), and realisation (where Grace is aware that Ella pushed her and is not acting herself).
