Verb infinitives are the original form of the
verb before it is conjugated. It’s definition
always begins “to…
For example:
Hablar-to speak Ir-to go
Comer-to eat Ser-to be
Escribir-to write Tener-to have
Using Verb Infinitives
• We use verb infinitives in idioms or
phrases.
For example:
I’m going to speak (hablar) to…
We have to study (estudiar) for…
Using Tener-to have
• We learned the following chart for tener:
Yo- tengo nosotros-tenemos
Tú- tienes
él ellos
ella tiene ellas tienen
usted ustedes
To say the phrase “to have to…” we use
the verb “tener” then “que” then the
“infinitive verb”. The formula is:
tener+ que + infinitive verb

Examples
I have to speak with Professor Cotto.
Tengo (I have) + que + hablar (to speak)=
Tengo que hablar con la profesora Cotto.
We have to study for the history test.
Tenemos (we have) + que + estudiar (to study)=
Tenemos que estudiar para el examen en la clase
de historia.
Using Ir- to go

To say the phrase “going to…” we use
the verb “ir” then “a” then the “infinitive
verb”. The formula is:
ir+ a + infinitive verb

We are going to study for the history test.
