The design and commissioning of the controls associated with a continuous or batch process directly impact plant operating efficiency and production quality and throughput. In this session we review techniques that may be used to identify control opportunities to reduce production costs, minimize variations in product quality and to maximize production within the limits set by market demand. Several common application examples from the process industry will be used to illustrate how plant production rate and product quality are directly influenced by process control variation and constraints in plant operation. Starting with an assessment of control loop utilization and automatic control performance, a step by step process is outlined that may be used to identifying and addressing areas where it is possible to justified the time and material costs required to improve control performance. In particular, information will be provided on how to quickly tune single loop control of self-regulating or integrating process and to recognize when variations in control loop performance are not associated with loop tuning. An overview will be provided of tools and techniques that may be used to achieve best control performance over a wide variety of operating conditions. Also, guidance will be provided on when it is possible to justify the cost associated with the installation and commissioning of multi-loop techniques such as feedforward control, ratio and override control. The steps required to commission multi-loop control strategies will be address along with common mistakes to avoid. Also, input will be provided on how to recognize when advanced control techniques such as Fuzzy logic or MPC are needed to achieve the desired control performance. At the end of this session a drawing will be held to give away 10 copies of “Control Loop Foundation – Batch and Continuous Processes”. Many of the ideas discussed in this session are addressed in this book.

[Oil & Gas White Paper] Liquids Pipeline Leak Detection and Simulation TrainingSchneider Electric
Increasingly, pipeline operating companies must deal with regulations that focus on environmental protection. The goal of the regulations is to minimize pipeline leaks that not only endanger the environment but also result in operator downtime and financial penalties. Identifying, verifying and responding to the abnormal conditions around a potential leak require best practices, including controller training.
A computational pipeline monitoring (CPM) system uses real-time information from the field – such as pressure, temperature, viscosity, density, flow rate, product sonic velocity and product interface locations – to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the product being transported and create a computerized simulation. With it, controllers can be alerted to actual operating conditions that are not consistent with the calculated conditions and might signal the existence of a pipeline leak. Different CPM methodologies provide different leak detection capabilities, so different methods, or a combination of methods, might be better applied to different operations.
A comprehensive CPM system also supports training best practices that help engineers and controllers develop intimate knowledge of the control system interface, alarming functions and response actions. It is an efficient way to implement refresher training to cover network modifications and expansions and to accurately document training, testing results and qualifications. Computerized simulation has demonstrated to provide more comprehensive and effective training for a specific pipeline than on-the-job training. For this reason, it is the preferred method of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Association (DOT-PHMSA) for training controllers to recognize the abnormal conditions that might suggest a leak and to optimize the safety of the pipeline operation.
Schneider Electric’s SimSuite Pipeline solution is based on a real-time transient model that includes leak detection capabilities, crucial to safety and environmental concerns; a simulation trainer application for targeted and effective training of operational staff; and forecasting and planning functionalities that help improve business intelligence. Together, these capabilities help the pipeline operator reduce operations cost as well as comply with regulations.

Practical Advanced Process Control for Engineers and TechniciansLiving Online
In today's environment, the processing, refining and petrochemical business is becoming more and more competitive and every plant manager is looking for the best quality products at minimum operating and investment costs. The traditional PID loop is used frequently for much of the process control requirements of a typical plant. However there are many drawbacks in using these, including excessive dead time which can make the PID loop very difficult (or indeed impossible) to apply.
Advanced Process Control (APC) is thus essential today in the modern plant. Small differences in process parameters can have large effects on profitability; get it right and profits continue to grow; get it wrong and there are major losses. Many applications of APC have pay back times well below one year. APC does require a detailed knowledge of the plant to design a working system and continual follow up along the life of the plant to ensure it is working optimally. Considerable attention also needs to be given to the interface to the operators to ensure that they can apply these new technologies effectively as well.

Abstract: Many measurement challenges exist when monitoring high temperature assets such as Arc Furnaces, including high temperature, moving platforms, and high EMI. Northstar Bluescope Steel had all of these problems and more. They used these points for control, and their only solution was shutting the furnace down and replacing the wires often. By implementing an Emerson Smart Wireless technology, the customer was able to reduce or eliminate all of these measurement challenges, resulting in greatly reduced maintenance costs, and additional throughput.

Transition to online AMS reduces maintenance costs and improves operationsEmerson Exchange
Presented by David Rabon and Mike Ruhle
at the 2011 Emerson Exchange in Nashville.
Abstract: The utilities department at Pfizer Inc. in Groton, CT has leveraged an investment in SMART technologies to move from a failure/preventative maintenance process to a reliability based process. With a DeltaV upgrade, online AMS and Valvelink snap-on were installed. The software along with training/mentoring and a change in work practices have improved maintenance efficiency and costs. In the past work was performed when operations identified a process related alert only. Now the technicians help identify issues, generate work orders and resolve them before they become process issues.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

4. Challenge – Control Using Wireless
• It is desirable to minimize how often a measurement value is
communicated to reduce transmitter power consumption,.
• Most multi-loop controller in use today are designed to oversample the measurement by a factor of 2-10X to avoid the
restrictions of synchronizing the measurement value with the
control,
• Also, to minimize control variation, the typical rule of thumb is
that feedback control should be executed 4X to 10X times
faster that the process response time, process time constant
plus process delay.
• The conventional PID design (based on difference equation,
z-transform) assumes that a new measurement value is
available each execution and that control is executed on a
periodic basis.

6. Wireless Communication
Two communication techniques best fit control applications and
minimize the power consumption by the wireless device transmitting
the measurement value.
• Continuous – The device wakes up at a configured update period,
senses the measurement and then communicates the value.
• Window – The device wakes up at a configured update period,
senses the measurement and then communicates the
measurement if the specified trigger value is exceeded.
Window communications is the preferred method since for the same
update period less power is required.

7. Conventional PID - Impact of Wireless
• The underlying assumption in traditional control design is that the
PID is executed on a periodic basis.
• When the measurement is not updated on a periodic basis, then the
calculated reset action may not be appropriate.
• If control is only executed when a new measurement is
communicated, then this could delay control response to setpoint
changes and feedforward action on measured disturbances.

10. CONTROL PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCE
• Window communications reduce the number of transmissions
by over 96 %.
• The impact of non-periodic measurement updates on control
performance as measured by Integral of Absolute Error (IAE)
is minimized through the use of the PIDPlus for wireless
communication.

11. PID Performance for Lost Communications
• The Conventional PID provides poor dynamic
response when wireless communications are lost.
• The PIDPlus improves the dynamic response
under these conditions

Comparable control as
measured by IAE was
achieved using
WirelessHART
Measurements and
PIDPlus vs. control
with wired
measurements and
PID.
The number of
measurement samples
with WirelessHART vs
Wired transmitter was
reduced by a factor of
10X for flow control and
6X for pressure control
– accounting for
differences in test
duration.
18. Summary
• Wireless measurements may be used in closed loop
control applications.
– Window communications minimize power consumption
• The performance of PIDPlus in a wireless control network
is comparable to PID with wired inputs
– PIDPlus handles lost communications and recovery after loss of
communications.
• PIDPlus tuning depends only upon process dynamics, not
on wireless update rate
