The book Control Loop Foundation and its companion website controlloopfoundation.com have been widely used. One of the reasons for this was the team’s decision to allow access to study materials and labs from a wide-variety of PCs and Tablets. Doing this required putting a web interface on top of DeltaV, supporting multiple browsers, and providing access to continuous and historical data from web pages. Details on the web site design and construction are addressed in this workshop.

The design and commissioning of the controls associated with a continuous or batch process directly impact plant operating efficiency and production quality and throughput. In this session we review techniques that may be used to identify control opportunities to reduce production costs, minimize variations in product quality and to maximize production within the limits set by market demand. Several common application examples from the process industry will be used to illustrate how plant production rate and product quality are directly influenced by process control variation and constraints in plant operation. Starting with an assessment of control loop utilization and automatic control performance, a step by step process is outlined that may be used to identifying and addressing areas where it is possible to justified the time and material costs required to improve control performance. In particular, information will be provided on how to quickly tune single loop control of self-regulating or integrating process and to recognize when variations in control loop performance are not associated with loop tuning. An overview will be provided of tools and techniques that may be used to achieve best control performance over a wide variety of operating conditions. Also, guidance will be provided on when it is possible to justify the cost associated with the installation and commissioning of multi-loop techniques such as feedforward control, ratio and override control. The steps required to commission multi-loop control strategies will be address along with common mistakes to avoid. Also, input will be provided on how to recognize when advanced control techniques such as Fuzzy logic or MPC are needed to achieve the desired control performance. At the end of this session a drawing will be held to give away 10 copies of “Control Loop Foundation – Batch and Continuous Processes”. Many of the ideas discussed in this session are addressed in this book.

Transition to online AMS reduces maintenance costs and improves operationsEmerson Exchange
Presented by David Rabon and Mike Ruhle
at the 2011 Emerson Exchange in Nashville.
Abstract: The utilities department at Pfizer Inc. in Groton, CT has leveraged an investment in SMART technologies to move from a failure/preventative maintenance process to a reliability based process. With a DeltaV upgrade, online AMS and Valvelink snap-on were installed. The software along with training/mentoring and a change in work practices have improved maintenance efficiency and costs. In the past work was performed when operations identified a process related alert only. Now the technicians help identify issues, generate work orders and resolve them before they become process issues.
Practical Advanced Process Control for Engineers and TechniciansLiving Online
In today's environment, the processing, refining and petrochemical business is becoming more and more competitive and every plant manager is looking for the best quality products at minimum operating and investment costs. The traditional PID loop is used frequently for much of the process control requirements of a typical plant. However there are many drawbacks in using these, including excessive dead time which can make the PID loop very difficult (or indeed impossible) to apply.
Advanced Process Control (APC) is thus essential today in the modern plant. Small differences in process parameters can have large effects on profitability; get it right and profits continue to grow; get it wrong and there are major losses. Many applications of APC have pay back times well below one year. APC does require a detailed knowledge of the plant to design a working system and continual follow up along the life of the plant to ensure it is working optimally. Considerable attention also needs to be given to the interface to the operators to ensure that they can apply these new technologies effectively as well.

A Quick and Easy Way to Connect to FOUNDATION fieldbus using Emerson’s USB Fi...Emerson Exchange
Presented by Emerson's Alan Dewey at the 2011 Emerson Exchange in Nashville, TN USA.
Abstract: Emerson has recently introduced a quick and easy way for users to connect directly to a FOUNDATION fieldbus segment with their portable laptop or notebook computer. Using Emerson's newly available USB Fieldbus Interface, users can easily connect their laptop or PC to a fieldbus network either in the field or on the bench. This enables users to experience the benefits of applications such as AMS Device Manager without having to use the control system. This workshop will highlight the capabilities of this useful new device and provide a live demonstration of how it can be used.
Presented by Emerson's Michael Pearson and Roy Gueldenzoph at the 2011 Emerson Exchange in Nashville, TN USA.
Abstract: Many measurement challenges exist when monitoring high temperature assets such as Arc Furnaces, including high temperature, moving platforms, and high EMI. Northstar Bluescope Steel had all of these problems and more. They used these points for control, and their only solution was shutting the furnace down and replacing the wires often. By implementing an Emerson Smart Wireless technology, the customer was able to reduce or eliminate all of these measurement challenges, resulting in greatly reduced maintenance costs, and additional throughput.
Cryogenic Vessel Alternatives' Kegan Kavander and Emerson's Nicole Rundlett won the best of conference presentation in the Instrumentation Flow track at the 2011 Emerson Exchange conference in Nashville, TN USA.
Their abstract: The LNG market has increased dramatically over the past several years, and developing systems to handle custody transfer transactions in remote areas is a key to the market's success. Cryogenic Vessel Alternatives has developed an LNG dispensing trailer which allows for the transport and eventual sale of LNG to remote areas.
Accurate metering of the LNG is facilitated through the use of a Micro Motion CMF100 which has been designed specifically for cryogenic applications. Using the sensor's diagnostics, customers are ensured of being billed for LNG in an all liquid state.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

4. GSK ‘Agile’, Calibration Excellence
initiative
Q1 2009 GSK launched Primary Supply Agile Engineering
Group identified problem of Cost of Calibration
Pilot project identified for Cork site to reduce the cost of
calibration utilising any or all available technologies
Project was to focus on three areas
– Instrument Diagnostics ,remove calibrations of non critical instruments
from on schedule to on demand relying on SMART diagnostic information
from the instrument
– Paperless Calibration ,move to paperless calibration system which
significantly reduces the process of calibration and eliminates non
calibration support functions such as document management ,manual
approvals and correction of transcription errors
– Calibration Analysis ,Analyze historical data to recommend interval
extension provided data shows that previous calibrations meets stringent
corporate policy

6. Emerson Beamex Background ...
The Calibration Management ‘Power Users’ – often from the highly
regulated industry sectors such as Life Science($/FDA) and Power
($/HSE) – usually need functionality that AMS Device Manager’s
Calibration Assistant Snap-On can not provide
– Strategic decision not to invest product development resources to add and
maintain necessary ‘Power User’ Calibration Management functionality to AMS
Device Manager.
– Therefore, develop an integrated solution with Beamex, a global Specialist
company with compliant Calibration Management Software, Hardware and
Services.
AMS Device Manager’s ‘Native’ Calibration Management and Calibration
Assistant Snap-On still provide a simple viable solution for users with less
demanding functional requirements
– Documenting Calibrator support, including Beamex MC5, MC2 etc.
7. Summary of Beamex & cooperation

9. Emerson / Beamex Calibration
Excellence Value Proposition:
Calibration efficiencies are achieved from two main
approaches
– Reducing the number of Calibrations performed
• Critical Devices have realistic, justified, time-based calibration schedule
supported by Condition Monitoring
• Less critical Devices have no, or significantly extended, time-based
calibration schedule, relying on Condition Monitoring to trigger event-
based Calibration.
– Performing the remaining Calibrations in a time and manpower efficient
manner
• Synchronise instrument data between calibration management system
and asset management system
• Use documenting calibrators
• Optimise scheduling of planned periodic calibrations
• Remove paper from the calibration process
10. Condition Monitoring with AMS Device
Manager Alert Monitor
Alert Monitor enables Online Condition Monitoring for Instruments,
Valves and Electrical Equipment such as Drives and UPS
Prioritisation of alerts according to the nature of the diagnostic and the
importance of the device
– Colour/Wording indication of alert severity – Categorisation of a Device’s importance
• Pre-configured for Emerson devices • IMPLEMENT from AO Services can define
these

Legacy Calibration system and Data Migration
Legacy system paper based
Data organically grew over 20+ years of service
Loop components included non calibrated items such as
barriers
Almost became a holding area or sandbox for items that had no
natural home i.e. Software limits
Challenge was to migrate data from legacy system to CMX but
exclude items that were not part of calibration activity.
Initial Export to Excel was 28000 lines of data
Import from Excel to CMX was 7000 lines of data

25. Business Results Achieved
Paperless Calibration
– Elimination of 21,000 sheets of paper per annum.
– Workflow has been significantly streamlined end to end which reduces cal time by
estimated 15 minutes per cal.
– Elimination of calculation errors and reworks as pass/fail calculations are provided in
real time out on plant.
– 8% reduction in scheduled calibrations implemented during data migration from legacy
system.
– Generation of email alerts upon calibration failure; only calibration failures now need
to be reviewed and approved.
Historical Analysis
– Extension of calibration intervals, recommended by the system via email alerts. This
so far has resulted in 234 calibrations per annum being removed from schedule during
first twelve months of analysis and should peak year three of operation.
Instrument Diagnostics
– Removal of 33% of P4 loops (not related directly to quality, EHS or regulatory) from
scheduled calibration to calibration on demand based on an instrument’s self
diagnostics. Approximately 300 hours have been saved per annum.
26. Next Steps
Build on the success of the Cork Project
Make system available to network by centralising installation
including existing licenses
– Make system a globally validated library item
– Mirrored hosting servers across GSK regions
– Token Licenses to be shared across time zones
Drive cost of the system down so low cost manufacturer geo
locations are not excluded
– leverage common standards
– Costs should only include data migration
– License share
On going communications about the benefits of paperless and
