Stress, fatigue, and mental workload exert a significant influence on the quality of operator performance. While these measures can be assessed using subjective questionnaires, these can be vulnerable to bias.
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive and relatively inexpensive means of collecting objective physiological data on the stress, fatigue, and mental workload.
This presentation provides a brief primer on HRV and how it can be used to assess operator performance.

Communicating ideas or insights is often the hardest part of the design process. And PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheets are limited in their ability to do this. The Five things that all definitions of Design Thinking have in common:
1. Isolating and reframing the problem focused on the user.
2. Empathy. A design practitioner from IDEO, the popular design and innovation firm strapped a video camera to his head and it was only then that he recognized why the ceiling is such an important factor when working with hospital patients. As a patient you lay in bed and stare at it all day. It’s these little details and true empathy that can only be realized by putting oneself in the user’s shoes.
3. Approach things with an open mind and be willing to collaborate. Creativity with purpose is a team sport.
4. Curiosity. We have to harness our inner 5-year-old here and really be inquisitive explorers. Instead of seeing what would be or what should be, consider what COULD be.
5 - Commitment. Brainstorming is easy. It’s easy to want to start a business or solve a problem. Seeing it into market and making it successful is not for the faint of heart. We’ve all read about big “wins” (multi-billion dollar acquisitions like Instagram and WhatsApp). What we don’t read about are people like Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, who work for years before becoming industry sensations.

The heart is connected through the nervous system directly to major organs and is able to sense
their need. The heart also responds to adrenaline in the blood flowing through it. With these
inputs the heart is able to adjust its rate to accommodate the needs of the whole body. By its
heartbeat, it is able to broadcast a common signal to every cell. One measure of heart health is
Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV is defined in terms of how different the lengths of time
between each heart beat is. The greater the difference in times between heart beats, the
healthier is the heart thought to be. Individuals may be able to learn to increase their own HRV
and become healthier by a daily meditation practice. This paper uses Heart Variability as the
base signal for studying the impact of meditation on it. The paper brings out the difference
between pre and post meditation conditions in terms qualitative measure of Power Spectral
Density (PSD) variations using Smoothed Pseudo Wigner Ville (SPWVD) distribution method.The simulations highlight the meditation effects overtime period in PSDs
Objective and Study Design: Stress is considered as physiological response to the mental, emotional, or physical challenges. Most of the times mental stress provokes body’s “fght or flight” response called as acute stress
response. But prolonged or chronic stress can affect numerous physiological functions, such as growth, immune system, metabolism, reproduction and circulation. The Autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system is most commonly affected by stress and is assessed
by means of heart rate variability (HRV)
Material and Methods: The aim of this study is to establish mental stress and cardiovascular autonomic Nervous System response to mental stress assessed by combining different physiological parameters using HRV and Stroop test as tool. We compared the mean RR interval, Blood pressure and indices of HRV during the Stroop Color Word Test (SCWT).A total of 50 normal healthy subjects were participated in this study. Results: Statistically signifcant change in heart rate, RR interval and BP was observed during the stress as compared to resting condition. All the components of HRV (SDNN, RMSSD, NN50, PNN50, LF, HF, LF/HF) were sensitive to stress in all the healthy individuals. Males were more prone to stress when compared to females.
Conclusion: The results suggest that there was increased sympathetic activity and reduced parasympathetic activity in HRV performed
during the Stroop test and showed statistically signifcant difference among the genders. Both physical and mental stress influence risk factors that may increase risk for cardiovascular diseases and autonomic imbalance
