RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
DEAR MARIA, COUNT ME IN –
ALL TIME LOW
• A guy is chasing after a girl he’s in love with through a
bunch of different scenes. he sees her in the crowd of his
concert and runs off stage to see her as she runs out the
venue it changes to her being a cheerleader at an
American football match. When the guy catches up to
her, she runs off again then it cuts to her on the red
carpet when she leaves, she ends up back in the concert
front row.
DEAR MARIA, COUNT ME IN –
ALL TIME LOW
•A couple just got in a fight and the man left and drove
off in rage. He gets into a car crash and gets flashbacks
of important/memorable moments in the relationship.
• The leader of a rebellion (Maria) is on the run with the
rest of the rebellion when they are found by the people
who want to capture them. A fight breaks out between
the two groups when someone tells the capturers Maria
is the leader and she gets taken.
YOUNGER –
RUEL
• Shows a story (friends drifting apart
as they get older)
• Cuts scene on the beat
• Scenes get darker as the friendship
falls apart
• No big fancy props, basic everyday
objects
This could link to my production
because I could use the video to tell a
narrative
CASINO – RYAN
BEATTY
• Uses a lot of double exposure clips
• All filmed outdoors – only prop is a
car
• Reuses locations/scenes
• Not too much going on like the song,
simpleThis video might link to my production
because I like how they use the double
exposure in different clips.
REMEMBER
ME– UMI
• Minimalistic
• Vintage/old film camera vibe
• Simple set design in the last few
shots
• home video style
This might link to my production
because I like the vintage filter,
they used to show the events
happening happened in the
past.
THE BALLAD OF
MONA LISA – PANIC!
AT THE DISCO
• Double exposure images adds to the
weird theme of the video
• Over the top costumes grunge style
clothing
• quick camera movements
• Each clip is short quick pace like the
song
I like all the extravagant
costumes so I could make the
actor of my video dress up
instead of just wearing everyday
clothes.
THERAPY
SESSIONS - NF
• Has a meaning for the video – shows
the story's he’s telling in each verse
• Dark lighting to match the mood of
the song
• Simple set designs
• Different scene on each beat
This might link to my video because I
like how they used the lighting to set the
scene and how each scene has a thought
out meaning.
POTENTIAL SONGS
• Say – Ruel
• Lifeline – Reuben Grey
• Kilby girl – The Backseat Lovers
• ICU – Phoebe Bridgers
• Tangerine – Glass Animals
• Focus – Thomas Headon

POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
• Double exposure imaging
• Lighting to match the mood/narrative of the song
• Close up shots
• Zoom in/out
• Move the camera with the actor
CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
• Clips were cut on the beat
• Lighting often gets darker throughout
• Narrative

MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
• I get to work with friends
• Emilie gets to climb through a window
• I get to use sfx makeup
• we get to go a forest/field
• I get to work on developing my filming skills
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
• it could rain on the day of filming
• there could be other people at the locations so filming
might be difficult
• it will be getting dark earlier by the time we film so
there will be less hours of day light to use for filming
• my friend might not show up our she could be late
• We could end up having to self-isolate so won't be able
to film
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
ICU/ Phoebe Bridgers
Phoebe Bridgers is an American indie musician from LA.
She is best known for her work as a solo singer-
songwriter. In 2017 Bridgers signed to Dean oceans
record label and released her debut album ‘Stranger in
the alps’. On June 19th 2020 she released her second
studio album ‘Punisher’ that reached number 6 on the
UK album charts the week ending July 2nd
Links to other artists: In April 2020 she featured on the
The 1975 song ‘Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America’.
Phoebe Bridgers is also a part of an indie rock band with
Conor Oberst called Better Oblivion Community Center.
Genre: Indie rock, folk rock, emo
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
The song ICU is about her breakup with her drummer
Marshall Vore. ICU was written 3 years ago in-between
sound checks while Bridgers was on tour with her band.
The track has a lot hospital/being dead imagery, as the
title is an abbreviation for intensive care unit. The song
is 3 minutes 10 seconds long so it's not a long song. The
pace of the song is quite slow while she sings but speeds
up between verses. The genre of the song is indie and
folk rock.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My video will resemble the stages of going through a
breakup, it starts with the actress sad and lonely, then
she starts to search for a reason to be happy and get
over her ex, at the end she realizes she doesn’t need
anyone but herself to be happy. The whole video will be
filmed outside as being outdoors is a common theme in
indie videos. There will also only be one person in the
video as most indie/alternative videos will only have the
singer in them and are very minimalistic with very basic
narratives if they have one.
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
ICU – PHOEBE BRIDGERS
MUSIC VIDEO
The video will follow a girl through different
scenes/settings of her on a journey of self-discovery
after a breakup. At the start she is lost and in the middle
of nowhere but by the end she finds herself again and
can finally go home to be at peace with herself and
everything going on around her.
The intended outcome of the music video is to make the
viewer feel like they are going on her journey with her.
Sort of like the viewer is watching over her to make sure
she gets back home.
To film all the footage needed for the video I will use my
smart phone. To edit the music video together I will
be using adobe premiere pro.
ICU – PHOEBE BRIDGERS
MUSIC VIDEO
•The beat of the song during each verse is faster than the chorus
but the pace Bridgers is singing at in the verses is slower than the
beat this gives the impression that the music is like her thoughts
racing through her head. The music slows down for the chorus
then speeds up between the next verse this makes it feel like
everything can change in an instant and the world is just spinning
around her.
•“I’m tired of trying to get in the house” – she is tired of trying to
get back to being her old self, pre breakup.
•“If you’re a work of art, I’m standing to close, I can see the brush
strokes” – she can see all his flaws and imperfections, she is finally
seeing his true colours.
•“But I feel something when I see you now” “ICU” – hospital imagery
(Intensive Care Unit), he wasn’t good for her, but she didn’t care
because he made her feel something.
•“Let the dystopian morning light pour in” – even though she isn’t
okay just yet she is embracing the fact that she still needs time to
heel and it won't happen instantly.
•"It's amazing to me how much you can say, when you don't
know what you're talking about" - links to someone lying in the
LOCATIONS
•My front door – the doors quite hard to open, shed or a
house in the background
•Window – could fall climbing through it, might break the
window, could kill some of the plants under it
•My garden – small, grass needs to be dry, car/house/shed
will be in the way of the shot
•York art gallery – we need to pay to get in, need a bus into
the city, popular public place
•moorlands nature reserve – public place, weather conditions
might not be ideal, needs to be dry, stay on foot paths, very
busy on weekends
•Field/park - there might be kids in the park or people
walking, it could also rain
•Road – needs to be quiet and not busy, must be quick, got
to find a quiet road, we could use my drive instead (safer
option), WE COULD DIE =not good :)
EQUIPMENT
I need my phone to be able to film the music video and a
torch with red cellophane over it to make the lighting
red.
FACILITIES
I will be using the mac's in college and using the adobe
premiere pro software to edit the music video.
PERSONNEL
CREW: I will be the only crew member so I will be
available to film whenever I want.
CAST: I will be getting my friend Emilie to star in the
video, Emilie will be free to film on: Saturdays and
Sundays, Emilie will also be in the video for free. Emilie is
bringing her own food as she has special dietary needs
so it will be easier and safer if she makes lunch herself to
bring with her.
PROPS/COSTUME/
ETC
•Skeleton costume – to stay with
Bridgers brand, she wears one on
the album cover and in music
videos.
•Basic natural makeup look on the
cast member.
• I will also use a handheld mirror
that I will sand to look all
scratched
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-
VISUALIZATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

LOCATIONS
COSTUME/MAKEUP/HAIR
COLOUR/LIGHTING
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
https://youtu.be/ECSJXSXBCos
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.

INTRO
0:00 – 0:13
The world is spinning
around like thoughts
racing round your
head.
1ST VERSE
0:14 – 0:41
Laying down on the lawn
I'm tired of trying to get in
the house
I'm thinking out loud
I've been playing dead
My whole life
And I get this feeling
Whenever I feel good
It'll be the last time
Starts with Emilie
laying on the grass
"lawn"
0:21 – 0:26 Thought
bubble with the lyric
"I'm thinking out loud"
Glitches between her
being dead an alive
CHORUS
(1st) 0:42 – 0:54 (2nd) 1:33 – 1:45
But I feel something
When I see you now
I feel something
When I see you
Searching through a
woods (looks in
distress) like she is
looking for something
to make her feel whole
again
2ND VERSE
1:04 – 1:32
If you're a work of art
I'm standing too close
I can see the brush strokes
I hate your mom
I hate it when she opens her
mouth
It's amazing to me
How much you can say
When you don't know what
you're talking about
looking into a mirror
she found in the
woods staring at her
flaws and
imperfections "brush
strokes".
Emilie gets mad and
hits a tree in anger.
3RD VERSE
1:46 – 2:12
I used to light you up
Now I can't even get you
To play the drums
Cause I don't know what I
want
Until I fuck it up
Finally leaving the
woods once she
realises, she doesn't
need anything but
herself to be happy
HOOK/BRIDGE
2:23 – 2:34
But I feel something
When I see you now
I feel something
She is running down a
road so that she can
finally go home to be
at piece.
4TH VERSE
2:36 – 3:05
I'll climb through the window again
But right now it feels good not to stand
Then I'll leave it wide open
Let the dystopian morning light pour in
Climbs through a
window or walks
through a door into
her house links to the
line "I'm tired of trying
to get in the house"
symbolizes she is
finally home. Dark red
"dystopian" lighting to
set the mood – shows
she isn't happy but
has come to terms
with her state of mind.

RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production

STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN Breakdown yourtrack into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section You can use this as the master template for your production, then add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual plan You should create a slide showing all the sections of the song, then add a slide for each section with timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots You could storyboard and shot list each section as you go, to break up the process.
