Neil Shubin s Your Inner Fish
There are many differences present between species in the animal kingdom. There are also many
variations of breeds, mutations within the same species, behavior, etc. Neil Shubin s Your Inner Fish
focuses on the similarities rather than differences of behaviors, variation in animal psychology, and
morphology because of habitat. This book emphasizes three types of evidence. The first are the
similarities between body parts of living creatures to compare common ancestry. The second are the
indications from microbiology to also compare common ancestry. Finally, the details provided of the
missing link between amphibians and fish. In the first couple of chapters of his book, Shubin points
out how organs in various creatures are extremely similar. He focuses in on the resemblances in the
design of the body, hands, heads, nose, eyes, and ears. As Shubin writes, When you look into eyes,
forget about romance, creation, and the windows into the soul. With their molecules, genes, and
tissues derived from microbes, jellyfish, worms, and flies, you see an entire menagerie.

The fossil allows us to reconstruct relationships between prehistoric creatures and those found today.
It was discovered that the fish had resided in a shallow stream but obtained arm and leg bones similar
to an animal as well. This allowed the fish to push ups. By explaining experiments by various genetic
researchers, there was a gene discovered called Sonic hedgehog. This gene is responsible for the
shaping of hands, fins, or paws. Sonic hedgehog s normal function can be disrupted by the
recombination of its digits. This is the gene that explains that there is no emergence of a new DNA,
but, rather, the gene was recombined in a new way. Most of the text elaborates on the close relations
between invertebrates and unicellular creatures as well far more complex living

Character Analysis Of The Storyteller By Antonia Michaelis
The book I choose to read was The Storyteller by Antonia Michaelis. Anna is a girl who likes to dream
and was quite an innocent child despite being in highschool realty hasn t hit her yet, that was until she
meet Abel also known as the polish peddler. He is a drug dealer and that was who Anna soon came to
love. Throughout this novel there is chaos and love. The main characters who went through the most
character development was Anna becoming strong, Abel becoming unstable, and Micha losing her
innocence. Anna is an innocent teenager. She is able to block out all of the bad and focus on what
matters to her. Even if her best friends do drugs and aren t the best of people she was still able to
dream big and stay out of trouble. Anna stayed outside. She felt stupid. She wanted to think about the
old sled with the red stripe, but instead she thought soap bubble. I live in a soap bubble. The whole
school knows things I don t. But maybe I don t want to know them. (Michalis 7) As the story
progressed she began to change. She meet the Abel also known as the polish peddler. Abel is the
definition of a bad guy and with that Anna began to change. Instead of dreaming for herself she
wanted her polish peddler to have a better life. He is the bad boy for a reason but that doesn t mean he
is when he gets home. Anna realizes that he has a little sister named Micha. Anna begins to see things
that she shouldn t have and learns new scary facts. While at the same time she is

Overall, 1 in 4 respondents outsources less than 20% of their logistics operations to 3PLs. Is this is a
sign that shippers are hesitant to allow too much ownership of their supply chain to outside
companies, or that they prefer to bring the expertise into their own logistics division? Concerns over
integrating the two businesses into a successful working relationship and ensuring mutually viable
contract terms could also be factors in the decision against outsourcing a large percentage of key
business operations.

What Are Cell Surface Carbohydrates
Cell surface carbohydrates are carbohydrate chains that are bonded to lipids and proteins that are
within the phospholipid bilayer of a cell. These are known as glycolipids and glycoproteins; they have
carbohydrate chains protruding from them out of the cell membrane surface. They are the first
molecules to be encountered and recognized by other cells, so they are used to identify the cell.
Carbohydrates are used as the ligand component of glycoconjugates (glycoproteins and glycolipids)
and their structure varies depending on the structure of the molecule it binds to, ranging from small
saccharide units to very large polysaccharide chains. Although the carbohydrate chains are generally
oligosaccharides and can either be straight or branched. Cell surface carbohydrates coat the exterior
surfaces of cell membranes and extend from the phospholipid bilayer into the aqueous environment
outside the cell presenting information rich binding sites and have the potential to carry necessary
information to act as markers for cellular recognition. The anomeric carbon of the carbohydrate binds
to the hydroxyl group present on the lipid or protein through a covalent bond referred to as a
glycosidic bond. The carbohydrate is hydrophilic and contains polar groups that enable the molecule
to be soluble as it forms hydrogen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Interactions can occur between glycoconjugates in the same cell as well as trans interactions between
two different cell membranes. The carbohydrate will bind to a specific complementary carbohydrate
or lectin (a carbohydrate binding protein) of a neighboring cell. The detailed chemical structure of
carbohydrates means that these compounds are able to fulfil a range of important biological functions.
The major functions of these cell surface markers are cell signalling and cell to cell adhesion and

Chapter 7 is titled Intercollegiate Athletics. Chapter 7 deals with a lot of information about the starting
of college athletics. The first three topics that chapter 7 focuses on is the Origins of Intercollegiate
Athletics Governance, National Collegiate Athletic Association, and other National Governing Bodies.
While continuing chapter seven I continue to learn more and more about Intercollegiate Athletics. The
next three topics its talks about is athletic conferences, basics of college sport finance, and director of

talks about first line managers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Equipment managers may seem corny or inadequate, but without them it would be difficult for your
team to compete. According to the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) (What Is
Certification, 2008), equipment managers purchase equipment; fit equipment such as football helmets;
checks, clean, and inspect uniforms and equipment to reduce wear and risk of injury while preserving
the life of the equipment and garments as part of the budget management process; and establish a
comprehensive accountability system that includes inventory, reconditioning, and storage. Equipment
managers play a key role in intercollegiate athletics, but sports information directors are important as
well. According to Staurowsky and Abney, sports information directors are responsible for both
technical and management functions. Sports information directors basically make sure to spread the
word of an event coming up. They hand out flyers, game programs, newsletters and a lot more stuff.

In line 6 the writer gives us an image in the phrase the snake slides away. Here the writer describes the
wonderful movement of a snake that can make you carious to know how it is created. Furthermore in
the same line the speaker give us a simile when she describes the jumping of a fish like a little lily
which is type of plant that grows from a bulb and that has large white or coloured flowers .( Oxford
dictionary 2006)The writer also gives us another great image of nature :The gold finches sing from the
unreachable top of the tree . Here unreachable top of the tree is connected to the first line of the poem
where there are things you can t reach even if you want to like the gold finches who sing from a far
place. In line 7 the writer invites us to look at nature by saying I look and then saying morning to night
where she means she looks at nature all day long without feeling bored or done with looking. In line 8
the writer tells us that in line 7 when she said looking she didn t mean just standing around in nature,
but standing around as though with your arms open .Here I think the writer means that your mind
should be open and think about what god created .In line 9 the poet extends this idea by saying that
when you stand around with your mind open and working, maybe something will come to you, for
example, a shining coil of wind. Maybe she means some air which will give you an energetic spirit.

White In The Great Gatsby
White is colour at its most complete and pure, the colour of perfection. The colour meaning of white is
purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. The colour white was introduced into the novel when
Daisy was described as wearing a white dress. The dress showed her as having a pure and innocent
personality. It was actually ironic that she wore white because the reader knows of her true
characteristics, even though she was represented as lovable character in the book and as well as the
movie. The white covered the fact that she was having an affair with Gatsby. White can also
sometimes symbolize honesty, which is something Nick looked for in people. The narrator and Gatsby
were both honest men and became friends because of it. Nick stopped dating Jordan Baker ... Show

Gatsby surprised her by making an appearance shortly after she arrived. The nervous Jay Gatsby
knocked over and broke a clock while trying to keep his cool around Daisy. This symbolized how time
stopped for the two of them when Gatsby went to war. Gatsby wished things could go back to how
they were before Daisy married Tom, but inside he knew that it was impossible then. The clock
breaking could also be seen as the end of Gatsby s time. It foreshadowed that his time was running
short and soon something might happen to prevent him from marrying Daisy. In the end, Wilson cut
Gatsby s time short by killing him, for basically no reason as he didn t even kill Myrtle. Overall, the
clock represented time and how it played a reoccurring roll in the novel. Time separated Daisy and
Gatsby from getting married five years prior to the setting of the story. The breaking of the clock
showed a sudden change in the steady pace of time. White is not only mentioned related to Gatsby, but
as Nick went to see Daisy for the first time, over at Tom Buchanan house, Tom said that he is
concerned about a book he recently read called The Rise of the Coloured

What Is Daniel Ellsberg Morally Right
Daniel Ellsberg was born in Chicago in 1931. Throughout his life he made choices that went against
what society would define as right, although these choices were considered morally right to him. With
degrees from Cranbrook and Harvard, he was a very intelligent man. He wrote a thesis that became
very popular and admirable called Economic Journal and American Economics Review. He also
served in the marine corps for three years, which gave him a good idea on the military. He then
returned home to work for RAND corporation in department of defense. His main job here was to plan
out classified ways to go about the war with Vietnam. While working for RAND corporation, he
helped on a top secret report known as The Pentagon Papers. Daniel Ellsberg`s goal was to show the
American people what Nixon was keeping from them, and he succeeded in this plan.

them the full truth. The Pentagon Papers talked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

knew it would be more beneficial for him to be silent and let this information stay secret, but he also

gut about what he thought was right. I wasted years of trying to do it though channels, first within the
executive branch and then with Congress. During that time, more than 10,000 Americans died, and
probably more than a million Vietnamese. says Ellsberg. He tried to go through different areas of

Taking action into his own hands was what truly made a

the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU), increasing the computing performance of our system, hence
creating a robust parallel computing unit. In this paper, we will be introducing a brief history on
CUDA, it s execution flow and it s architecture to handle processor intensive tasks. We will also be

So, in 2007, NVIDIA released CUDA, which provided the parallel architecture, to support the usage
of the GPUs. It was designed to work with programming languages such as C/C++ or Fortran and this
really helped specialists in parallel programming to use CUDA, rather than to learn other advanced
skills in GPU programming[10] . The model for GPU computing is to use a CPU and GPU together in
a heterogeneous co processing computing model[3]. The framework is designed such that the
sequential part of the application runs on the CPU and the computationally intensive part is
accelerated by the GPU. From the user s point of view, the application is faster because it is using the
better performance of the GPU to improve its own performance. ïżŒ Figure1: Core comparison

Socioeconomic Status And Mental Health
Does one s socioeconomic status affect their mental health? Mental health is a broad category that
refers to our mental well being. Mental illness refers to many different conditions that impact our
mood, our emotions, our thinking, and our affect. Depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia are all
examples of mental health conditions. Socioeconomic status (SES) is a term that social scientists use
to capture many different factors. It refers to a person s income level, education, and general position
in society. It s essentially a combined measure of how we re doing. Lower socioeconomic status is
related to higher levels of mental illness. This is known as a negative correlation in research terms. In
other words, as one variable increases, the other decreases. In this case, as SES decreases, the
incidence of mental health issues generally increases. Socioeconomic status (SES) is evaluated as a
combination of factors, including income, level of education, and occupation. It is a way of looking at
how individuals or families fit into society using economic and social measures. Likewise, according
to Psychiatry.org, mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or
behavior, or a combination of these. Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems
functioning in social, work or family activities. Mental health is the foundation for thinking,
communication, learning, resilience and self esteem. Mental health is also key to

The History Of Deism
Most people have either never heard of Deism or consider it to be of historical interest only. Its roots
can be traced to ancient Greece and it flourished for a while in the eighteenth century in Britain and
America, a product of the Enlightenment. Many of America s founding fathers Thomas Jefferson,
Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, James Madison and the British radical Thomas
Paine were Deists.
Deism was regarded by those who espoused it, to be a personal philosophy.
Deists were not proselytizers striving to win converts which proved to be its weakness. While
evangelical religion brought large numbers into its pews throughout the nineteenth century, Deism
dwindled.
Yet despite reports to the contrary it did not disappear. Today, in the USA, Deism is resurgent and
growing, this has largely been due to the internet allowing widespread presentation and discussion of
Deist ideas. This at a time when there has been a search for alternatives to evangelical religion and it s
often equally fundamentalist counterpart, militant atheism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Yet there may well be a large number of Deists who simply don t realise that is what they are. It is not
uncommon to hear statements such as, I m not religious, but I do believe in God , The universe is just
too organised to be just a series of random accidents , I just get the feeling there s something else,
something beyond what we can see and so on. The following bullet points are an attempt to give some
definition to Deism. They are most certainly NOT a creed demanding adherence.
Observing the order and complexity found in nature (and the nature of the universe), combined with
personal experience, reason leads to a belief in God.
Reason, not sacred texts or divine revelation, bring about a sense of divine being as a personal

b. Key Objectives of the Measure
It was necessary to revise the existing law on broadcasting services to take into account that
broadcasting service plays a significant role in the political, economic and social development of the
country by providing information, education and entertainment programs to the public. Moreover,
broadcasting plays a major role in exercising the basic constitutional rights such as freedom of
expression, access to information and the right to elect and be elected. It is then essential to ensure
proper and fair utilisation of the limited radio wave wealth of the country. It seems ad well essential to

Analysis Of Qantas Collaborative Strategy
TOPIC 1:
QANTAS COLLABORATIVE STRATEGY
In today s highly competitive business environment, companies must continually seek out initiatives
that will bring about competitive advantage, which occurs when a firm implements a strategy that is
costly or impossible for their competitors to duplicate (HANSON HITT IRELAND HOSKISSON
TB). An approach that has been rising in popularity for resource based firms in the past two decades
(KALE SINGH) is cooperative strategy, whereby two or more firms work together to achieve the
aforementioned competitive advantage.

This allows them to capitalise on the core competencies of other firms, resulting in competitive
advantage if successful. The major benefits of strategic alliances rather than acting independently
include a new source of revenue, a vehicle for firm growth, faster responses to market opportunities,
technological changes and global conditions, and grants experiences to draw new knowledge from.
In the aviation industry, strategic alliances come in the form of bilateral or multilateral agreements
where allied airlines share similar business objectives and coordinate their services to achieve their
common goals. According to Doganis (2006), they involve use of a common brand, a uniform service
standard, and the asset co mingling of aircraft, staff, traffic rights, terminal facilities or capital
resources to identify the airlines that are in a strategic alliance. Global airline alliances also exist in the
aviation industry. Alliance, OneWorld, and SkyTeam were launched between 1997 and 2001, and each
contain a dozen or more members. Figure 1 displays the differing levels of coordination between
partners in the various partnership types.
An example in aviation industry that has successfully employed a strategic alliance is Qantas Airlines,
who entered into a non equity strategic alliance with the large Middle Eastern airline Emirates.

Children Of The Lucky Country Case Study
Australia, a nation known as The Lucky Country , has an excellent award winning democratic society
with a booming economy. It is a land with unique fauna, climate, great golden beaches and natural
resources. Despite increasing economic prosperity and technological advancement, many Australian
children are not benefiting from the progress. In fact, for some the reality is an actual decline in the
vital areas of health, education and opportunity. Although, the trends in infections, survival at birth
and in infancy, accidents and deaths in the primary school years, death rates from severe diseases such
as cancers, and overall life expectancy have all improved. However, the levels of many problems
affecting children and young people are worryingly high and appear to be increasing. Therefore, while
death rates have fallen, proportions of children and youth with complex diseases such as asthma,
diabetes, overweight and obesity, intellectual disabilities and particularly psychological problems such
as depression, suicide and eating disorders have increased. Similar is the trend in premature births and
physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. Such concerns about children and young people in the
lucky country were raised by the Australian of the Year 2003, Fiona Stanley and inspired her to write
the book, Children of the Lucky Country? Fiona Juliet Stanley is Founding Director of the Telethon
Institute for Child Health Research in Perth, Western Australia, Inaugural Chief Executive Officer of
the Australian Research Alliance for children and youth, and Professor of Paediatrics, University of

major force behind improving health conditions in Australia s Aboriginal populations. Fiona Stanley
was born in 1946 in New South Wales and moved to Perth, Western Australia with her family in 1956.
Her interest in Science and Medicine developed throughout her childhood and her father, who was one
of the world s first virologists and worked on the polio vaccine in the 1950s, heavily influenced her.

Statues of David Essay
There have been many staues of David sculpted by famous artists like Donatello, Verrocchio, and
Michelangelo. Bernini s version of David and is about to begin his attack on Goliath, as he appears
posing. The statue seems to be moving through space and the action suggests that the action of
flinging the stone requires a lot of room around David. The statue forces the observer to look past the
actual subject and focus more on the surroundings. He seems to have very muscular legs, and appears
to be ready to turn and throw a stone from his sling. This is the most dramatic pose that Bernini could
have picked and was chosen because it shows a sudden burst of energy and a moment of suspense as
well. Bernini s David is different from that of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, it is different from the narrative form that Bernini created. Verrocchio shows David
standing over the giant s head with pride. This bears resembles Donatello s David where David is
standing with a foot on top of his oppressor.
Michelangelo was another artisan who portrayed David in a unique matter. He didn t represent David
standing over a defeated Goliath, but instead made him look like he was patiently awaiting his enemy.
The body has a very classical form and is muscular and very tense. The form makes David look
powerful. Michelangelo made David very strong with well defined features, iand even included
enlarged hands to show the viewer of the strength that David had before attacking Goliath. Unlike
other versions at the time, Michelangelo didn t create a version of a prideful David, but instead a
David who was amongst or aware of his enemy.
Donatellos, Verrochio s, and Michelangelo s figures compare in the sense that none of them show any
physical activity and are shown as prideful as they stand over oppressors. Bernini s rendition of David
is unique in the sense that he creates a more narrative figure instead of one that is poised and more
classical in style. Protestants strongly believed that imagery presented in the church could cause
people to venerate figures in statues rather than focus all their attention on God during the

Change in the economy and society brought great wealth to the United States. Consequently, it was a
giant magnet for immigrations. However, the distribution of wealth across the population was not
even. The American working class in the last half of nineteenth century suffered from poverty and
oppression. Several documentations and stories were written in response to the people suffering. Two
of them Child Labor in The Canning Industry of Maryland by Lewis W. Hine and Maggie: A Girl of
The Streets by Stephen Crane vividly described the living and working conditions for the working
poor. In the period of 1860 1900, the majority of the working class, including native born and
immigrants, clustered in two largest industrial areas: the North East industrial cities and the West
agriculture farms. In the West, agricultures were dominated by land and railroad companies. Although
the farming industry grew simultaneously, workers life did not improve. In fact, they faced many
hardships such as severe oppression from their owners, unfair payment for their work, and serious lack
of education for their children. In his 1909 report, Lewis H. Hine revealed the harsh working condition

It was an impulsive decision, but I thought it would be nice to hang out with more people than usual.
The deal was to go to a small hill in Royal Park to enjoy the sunset, but we found the view covered by
the dauntless Royal Melbourne Hospital. Everything was still quite bright even though it was 6 pm. I
didn t want to go back home so I retraced my steps. A short walk from the hill was the large circular
grassy field that we had passed on our journey. Surrounding the field on the outer edges were
countless amounts of trees. I noticed that there were still people walking around the field. Although
they were far away, I could distinguish them from the surroundings due to how bright the field was. I

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry Essay
A hollow feeling inside of your chest consumes your body. The room is filled with your sobs and
hiccuped breaths. A million thoughts are racing through your head; none of these are positive. You tell
yourself that you wish you never met them. You plea at the universe to take away all the memories of
them. You beg to never again feel this type of agony. If possible, would you eradicate the memory of
another human?
In the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine
Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) do exactly this. Directed by Michel Gondry, this American romantic
comedy wonderfully expresses the idea that a person s memories are fundamental in human growth.
Through cinematography, lighting, and character development, Gondry successfully directs one of the
best twenty first century films.
The cinematography of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind effectively develops the film s plot and
characters. In the beginning of the movie, Joel is shown awaking in a close up. This shot easily shows
the gloomy expression on his face, asking the audience to question why he is upset. Hand held
cameras provide the story with a natural, more realistic feel, inviting the audience into Joel s
memories. The hand held cameras provide the film with an imperfect, human perspective. This can be
viewed primarily in the honeymoon on ice scene. Slight shakes of the camera are evident. In the scene
when Joel and Clementine see each other on the train to Montauk, far

Origins of the Islamic Religion in the United States Essay
Origins of the Islamic Religion in the United States
The beginning of Islam in the United States can be traced to the earliest days of the slave trade. While
many of the slaves brought to America practiced traditional African religions, many of the slaves from
West Africa were predominately Muslim. In fact a significant number of black Africans brought to
North America during the slave trade were Muslim. Due to the overwhelming Christian presence
during the slave trade, slaves were not allowed to practice their Muslim faith. The Christian slave
owners attempted to force their slaves to convert to Christianity. They were not as successful as they
deemed. The muslims continued to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Koran and the Sunna cover many things that Muslims must go by. Some examples are: diet,
marriage, and even the proper way to clean one s teeth. There are two different groups of Muslims, the
Shiites, and the Sunni. The Shiites are those who support the decedents of Muhhamad as their rightful
successors. The Sunni believed that the elections of the first three caliphs were valid. There are five
specific rituals that Muslims must follow. These rituals are known as the five pillars of Islam. These
rituals are as follows:
1) Profession of faith. There is no god but Allah, and Muhhamad is his prophet.
2) Prayer. Muslims must pray five times a day. When they pray, they must pray towards Mecca, the
holy city.
3) Charity to the poor. Muslims must contribute to public charities.
4) Ritual fast during Ramadan. Muslims cannot eat from the break of day until the setting of the sun.
5) The pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims must make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca at one time in their
lives.
These are the five rituals that Muslims went by and they did so successfully.
Islam is a way of life, as well as a religion. Those who follow Islam are very dedicated, for they live
their whole life submitting themselves to Allah. As a matter of fact, the word Islam means submission
to Allah. In the United States today, Islam is a highly accepted religion in the African American
community. Since the beginning of the American slave trade, Islam has had a

An Examination of Cardiovascular Disease
Heart Disease:
An Examination
Heart or cardiovascular disease is an umbrella term utilized for various diseases that can affect one s
heart. As with any disease, there are certain factors that can exacerbate the onset and continuation of
this disease. For this reason, the paper below will analyze heart disease in detail and describe the
specific population that is prone to being affected by this disease, as well as what this population can
do to help alleviate the harmful effects of heart disease. In order to understand heart disease, one must
understand that there are many diseases that relate to this broad term. According to the Mayo Clinic,
Heart disease is a broad term used to describe a range of diseases that affect your heart. The various
diseases that fall under the umbrella of heart disease include diseases of [ 曠 blood vessels, such as
coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias); heart infections; and heart defects [one
is] born with (congenital heart defects).
Due to the fact that there are so many various diseases connected to heart disease, it is truly quite
difficult to single out one population to be examined. However, what is known about heart disease is
that despite the fact that it can affect just about anyone, older males, especially in the African
American, Native American and Mexican American population are most at risk. The paper will,
therefore, focus on this population.

The primary piece of legislation used to regulate telecom providers is the Telecommunication Act of
1996. This paper will examine the characteristics, and point out similarities, of telecommunications
providers and information services such as the internet. Additionally, regulation of
telecommunications and the lack of regulation for information services will be addressed. Finally,
recommendations for potential ways to regulate information services, the potential legal ramifications
of such regulation, and the technical considerations regarding the recommendations will be identified.
Background
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 was the first major overhaul of United States
telecommunications law in nearly 62 years, amending the Communications Act of 1934. This Act was
a major stepping stone towards the future of telecommunications, since this was the first time that the
Internet was included in broadcasting and spectrum allotment. One of the primary goals of the law
(Title III specifically) was to let anyone enter any communications business to let any communications
businesses compete in any market against any other. Also, the new Telecommunications Act allowed
the FCC, and Congress, to update the old and outdated Telecommunications Act of 1934.
For purposes of regulation by the Federal Communications Commission under the U.S.

When you were younger, did you ever get separated from your parent and not know what to do or
whom to go to for assistance, and because you didn t know what to do you just wandered aimlessly
around? I know I have, and that s what a lot of people who are lost like that do. In fact, that happens a
lot here with new students. Yes, there are the peer helpers but that only gives the new student one
guide for one day. And that guide doesn t even show them their classes, they take them to the classes
they have and then the new student, the very next day, is on their own to find their own way. But

Their independence will be not only in finding their way around but also in knowing where to locate
things and who people are. Now many people argue they re in middle school, and they re older now,
meaning we have to be independent anyway. But even though we are older, that doesn t mean we
always know where things are or we always know what to do. That s like saying a newborn can
survive without caretaker. It s as simple as this; newborns know very little about the world and how it
works as to new students knowing very little about new schools and how they work. So regardless of
maturity or age, people need to be dependent before they can be independent, and the ambassador
program is a good form of that temporary dependence.
Another benefit of the ambassador program would be that it would allow new students to become
comfortable and gain a form of confidence. It s important for new student/staff to be comfortable
because if they weren t think of how difficult it would be for them to focus not only in class but just in
general. And when students become comfortable and confident enough, that s when they will be able
to focus on things like work. But it s often thought that being comfortable shouldn t prioritize over
classes and what matters is getting work done. But what most don t realize is that it s virtually
impossible for people like us to focus on work if we feel out of place in our everyday environment.
But this program would allow

Modern Traditionalism Vs Modernism
The period of the twentieth century, specifically the nineteen twenties, was a historically significant
event in history due to the dramatic changes politically and socially. In this time period there was
many altercations between two specific groups who had completely different outlooks on change.
Modernists, or people who tended to be in favor of new ideas, styles and social trends, embraced the
idea of change during this time period whereas traditionalist, or people who are opposed to change,
had deep respect for long held cultural and religious values that they believed should not be broken
under any circumstances. The disputes between the traditionalist and modernist over religious beliefs
made way into the woman s lives leaving pop culture to rise rapidly.
In the centuries leading up to the Jazz and the Machine Age , the nineteen twenties was in a major
dispute over religious beliefs between the traditionalist and the modernists. In 1925, a trial was held
that was known as the Scopes trial. John scopes, a high school teacher, taught the theory of evolution
in a Tennessee public high school. At the time, Tennessee had a state law they made it illegal to teach
evolution in schools. The modernists had believed that the teachings of evolution gave the public
another perspective through science but not religion. The traditionalist however, feared that the
teaching of the Bible would be lost along with religious morals if Scope had won the trial.

Essay on Loss In One Art by Elizabeth Bishop
One Art by Elizabeth Bishop is a poem that explores loss in comparison to an art; however, this art is
not one to be envied or sought after to succeed at. Everyone has experienced loss as the art of losing is
presented as inevitably simple to master. The speaker s attitude toward loss becomes gradually more
serious as the poem progresses.
Keys, having virtually no reason for emotional attachment, are mentioned in line 5 with a tone of
acceptance that, Yes, it is okay to lose keys. Although vital to the penetration of a lock, keys are such a
generic object that they can be easily replaced and, aside from the inability to open that door, will not
be missed for long. Lines 2 and 3 state that so many things seem filled with the intent ... Show more

At this point in the poem, the speaker s attitude toward loss is rather blasé due to the fact that the items
she has misplaced holds no emotional attachment and can be replaced.
As the poem progresses, the misplaced or forgotten items become concepts such as names and ideas,
and therefore carry more of an impact. For example, forgetting someone s name, however not
uncommon, can be associated with feelings of embarrassment from the forgettor, and annoyance from
the forgotten when they discover that they were not important enough to be remembered. The speaker
simply shrugs off these losses because None of [them] will bring disaster, as mentioned in line 9.
Emotion, often associated with memories is introduced in line 10 when the speaker announces, I lost
my mother s watch. An item such as a mother s watch holds sentimental value, unlike the previously
mentioned keys; however, the speaker repeats, I miss them, but it wasn t a disaster, (line 15) indicating
that the watch was merely a material possession crowded with memories. At this point, the reader
recognizes the feeling of missing something associated with greater losses of objects and ideas the
speaker regards with more emotional attachment.
In line 16, the speaker s emotional attitude toward loss changes as it becomes evident that the speaker
has lost a person, yet they still view loss as a part of

Adam and Eve obeyed God and did exactly as he had planned for them too do. It was up until the Fall,
when our first parents disobeyed God, mankind had true freedom. As soon as they rebelled what God
commanded him, man lost their inherent true freedom; they went against what God had planned for
them. And because of the sin of Adam and Eve, original sin, the consequence of this first sin that is a
transmissible stain with which we were born with, we are all constantly bent towards sinning. We now
sin because we are sinners, because we have a habit, and because the habit has damaged our judgment

freedom on our own; imperfection cannot create something a hundred percent perfect or utterly true. It
s impossible. There s good news though! Since Christ died for all our sins, we can obtain this true

Each goose lays and average of five to six eggs, sometimes only two and sometimes one goose may

The Hero s Journey In Whirligig By Paul Fleischman
In stories, there is always a pattern that they all have in common. This certain pattern is known as the
Hero s Journey. There are varying descriptions of the Hero s Journey steps but only the steps that are
set by the teacher is used. These steps are the The Call , Allies , Preparation , The Guardians of the
Threshold , Crossing the Threshold , Road of Trials , Saving Experience , Transformation , and
Sharing the Gift .This essay is explaining what the Hero s Journey is in the book Whirligig by Paul
Fleischman. The step that is coming up is the Call which is when the hero starts their journey.
The Call occurs when Mrs. Zamora requests Brent to make the whirligigs in the corners of the United
States. For example, Mrs. Zamora tells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this sentence, you can see that Brent only prepared materials to build the whirligig. This shows
that Brent is prepared to go on his journey because he has all of his necessaries in his luggage for the
quest. Also, this shows that Brent still is self conscious, comparing others to him. Therefore his
preparation is done, and he next needs to cross the Threshold blocking him from starting his quest.
There are no Guardians of the Threshold in this story unless Brent s parents are counted in the first
place. The book stated that Brent s parent raised one objection after another (Fleischman 41). The
Guardians of the Threshold usually prevents the hero from going on his quest, and this statement
shows that Brent s parents are objecting on the quest. If their objection is fulfilled, Brent wouldn t
have gone on the quest at first. This fits the standards of being the Guardians of the Threshold but
nothing is done. In conclusion, it could be called the Guardians of the Threshold by some.
A main problem in Brent s journey that is a Threshold of sorts is that he s self conscious. He doesn t
believe he has much of a future after his journey and compares to other people. In the book, it says He
was no longer of their kind and never will be (Fleischman 36). This sentence proves that he feels

What Are The 4 Laws Of Thermodynamics
The four fundamental laws of thermodynamics are used to define how physical quantities behave
under various circumstances, these include energy, entropy, and temperature. The First Law of
Thermodynamics states that energy in the universe is always conserved, therefore it cannot be created
or destroyed, and it can only be transformed from one form to another. The second law of
thermodynamics states that entropy of isolated systems always increases, this means that in all
processes of energy exchange, if no energy is introduced to or leaves a system, the sum of potential
energy will be less than initial condition. The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of a
system is maintained as the temperature decreases to absolute zero. The fourth law of thermodynamics
defines temperature equilibrium between systems.
The first law of thermodynamics defines that energy can be transformed but not destroyed. It s used to
define the internal energy contained in a system. It s formulated by pointing out the change in internal
energy in system minus work and heat that add and subtract energy in the system. Moreover, the
second law helps to clarify different ways in which motors change heat into mechanical work, for
example in steam turbines and car engines. The third law, also referred to as Nernst law, provides a
basis for calculating absolute entropy value of substances and an analysis of phase and chemical
equilibrium.
Fossil fuels are the most widely used energy source in

A Comparison of Death of a Naturalist and Digging by Seamus Heaney
The poems Death of a Naturalist and Digging have many similarities, and contrasts. Some of the
reoccurring themes in the two poems include memories of childhood and changes in the life of the
writer. There are contrasts too, in Death of a Naturalist ; the writer is concentrating on himself and his
own experiences in life, rather than the experiences of others. In Digging , the opposite is true, as the
writer concentrates mainly on the events in other people s lives, namely his father and grandfather.
The endings of both the poems have a different feel to them. Digging finishes in a much more positive

Death of Naturalist is about a young boy, his love for nature and how he relishes every aspect of the
countryside. A part of this passion is being aware of a host of small things that many people would
find insignificant; animals, frogspawn and all the noises of life around him. This changes in the
second stanza. The poet has a change of heart and he seems to retreat from the nature he previously
loved. He writes:
I sickened, turned and ran
So we can see he doesn t feel the same passion about nature any more, it was a death of the naturalist.
Digging is about a young man who feels that he is not worthy to follow in his father s footsteps. He
tells the reader about how great his father and grandfather were, but throughout the poem he says very
little about himself. Towards the end his mind is changed. Although his ancestors were hard working
men who earned their living through digging, he feels that his writing is a worthy path to follow. He
will dig with his pen.
Toward the end of both these poems the feelings change. In each poem the writer feels one thing at the
beginning, but toward the conclusion his mind is changed, either for the better, in Digging , or for the
worse, in Death of a Naturalist . It could be said that he had a change in perspective.
Even so, both poems have a deeper

acknowledged as a part of an alternate racial gathering. The term was utilized particularly as a part of
the U.S. to portray an individual of blended race legacy acclimatizing into the white larger part
throughout times when lawful and social meetings of hypo descent arranged the individual as a
minority, subject to racial isolation and segregation (Smedley).
People are made to feel their racial identify on the basis of their cast, ethnicity, race and color. White is
given more preference over the black due to their lighter shade. The author uses the example of the
swimming pool where he was not given permission to swim and was only allowed to swim on
Thursdays with a tight shopping bag around him. These restrictions were laid upon him when he was a
youngster.
I am 100% Polish (My father s last name is Wala, my mother s last name is Gobka), I am 5 11 , 210
lbs., with dirty blonde hair and green eyes. My guardians and more youthful sibling are each of the 5
tall. I emerge at family reunions in light of my stature. I took a year of Polish in High School and got a
C (and was expeditiously grounded by my guardians). However despite the fact that my guardians
were glad to be Polish, they don t needed anything yet the best for me growing up, ethnicity or not.
As I said in the recent past, throughout family reunions, I stood out like a sore thumb, for the

Force Majeure Clauses and Construction Contracts
FORCE MAJEURE CLAUSES IN CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS Prepared by Lowell A.
Westersund, Q.C. Partner Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP March, 2008 Montréal Ottawa Toronto
Edmonton Calgary Vancouver New York www.fmc law.com The primary purposes of construction
contracts are to clarify responsibilities (including performance and payment obligations) and to
allocate risk. It is in regard to the latter purpose that the concept of force majeure plays an important
role. Such clauses serve to deal with the risk of events which fall short of frustration. Such clauses can
be successfully employed to recognize industry or project specific risks. By way of example, a number
of years ago the writer dealt with a pipeline claim that arose from the ... Show more content on

Pros And Cons Of Not Having Dog Parks
Do you like pets? Are you a pet person? Well, I m not a pet person. Does that mean that I agree to not
having dog parks? No, because in alot of ways animals are alot like humans. Animals need basic
exercise and daily walks and runs to survive just like we do. Dog parks are expensive but they are
needed. People say dogs are for the most part loud and noisey. Just think about it if we were to build a
park made just for dogs , there would be alot less problems. Think about it, for the people who dont
like animals such as me. That could possibly be our get away time. Our even called our alone time.
The dogs will be able to run and exercise and get all there energy out. While their doing that us
residents could be doing our daily priorities.

How Leadership Teams Are Responsible And Accountable For...
As teachers, we would never consider teaching an entire unit to our students without frequently
checking on their understanding, monitoring their progress, providing additional support, and finally
evaluating their performance. It is important to hold ourselves to the same level of accountability.
Leadership teams are responsible and accountable for the progress that the students make under their
supervision and care. Administration teams must carefully monitor the progress of the stakeholders in
regards to implementing improvement strategies. There are many methods that can be used to
effectively and reliably measure the implementation process in nonthreatening and growth
encouraging ways. Leadership teams can host formal and informal interviews, they can initiate peer
reviews and PLC groups that actually look at student work, as well as do walkthroughs and formal
observations. Unfortunately, sometimes classroom evaluations are seen as judgemental and
threatening instead of as learning opportunities. However the implementation processes are monitored,
clear and open communication is critical. Leaders must communicate with their staff and talk about
the fact that change is not an event, but a process, and that the data that is being collected will be used
to help the entire community grow. Teachers need to feel supported and heard not judged or criticised.
It is important to recognize the difference between an assessment for performance and an evaluation

Ambivalence In Hitchcock s 1946 Notorious
Hitchcock s 1946 Notorious takes place in the morally ambiguous world in the midst of post World
War Two where the questioning of alliances and moralities have reached a breaking point. Alicia, the
daughter to an incarcerated Nazi supporter, finds herself in the midst of a purgatory world stuck in
between love and hate, in other words one of ambivalence. In this state of conflicting feelings of
hatred and like for the same individual that results in a state of uncertainty or irrationality, alcohol,
which is the driving force of the story line aims to showcase the extremes of this transference. This
glitch, meaning this a flaw in our thinking, most predominantly affects ideas of who or what is defined
as love, hate and their differences. Although Alicia is the only one seen as an alcoholic in Notorious,
all the characters have a relationship to this reoccurring theme that results in their undoing. These
ideas of emotional extremes, ambivalence, are always reinforcing and surrounded the idea of alcohol,
seeing it as a destroying force as it is the initiating quality of the story lines and is present throughout.
Poe s Black Cat aims to showcase the existing parallels of this alcoholic glitch as well as the
relationships to alcohol leading to many are the deceivers . Humanities introduces an idea of
ambivalence that accompanies this irrational undoing and reinforces the existence of hate and love as
a destroyer in the film taking the form of alcohol. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Rachel Carson s Silent Spring
Rachel Carson s Silent Spring, is arguably a seminal text of the environmental movement and
continues to impact on critical ecological discourse fifty years on. The late 1950 s were a period of
relative economic prosperity in the United States with a parallel baby boom following World War 2.
However, the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union manifested economic and
political rivalries during the same time. It was in this era, that Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring
which invoked the public into an environmental consciousness (Griswold 2012). Inherent in Carson s
text, that fundamentally sought to inform the wider public about the biological dangers inherent in
pesticides, was her ability to utilise a variety of literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a duality of silence and silencing between victims and perpetrators, nature and humans,
public and government. The chemical toxins work silently through the food chain and accumulate and
magnify in human and non human bodies. Like the constant dripping of water that in turn wears away
the hardest stone, this birth to death contact with dangerous chemicals may well prove disastrous.
(Carson, 1962, 158). Carson is critical of both the advertising techniques of chemical companies,
lulled by the soft sell and the hidden persuader (Carson , 1962, 158) and government agencies
including the Federal Aviation Agency s assurances that planes spraying insecticide were authorized to
fly low. (Carson, 1962, 91) Carson compares chemical manufacturers to the infamous Borgias, who

There are also many variations of breeds, mutations within the same species, behavior, etc. Neil Shubin s Your Inner Fish focuses on the similarities rather than differences of behaviors, variation in animal psychology, and morphology because of habitat. This book emphasizes three types of evidence. The first are the similarities between body parts of living creatures to compare common ancestry. The second are the indications from microbiology to also compare common ancestry. Finally, the details provided of the missing link between amphibians and fish. • 6. What Are Cell Surface Carbohydrates Cell surface carbohydrates are carbohydrate chains that are bonded to lipids and proteins that are within the phospholipid bilayer of a cell. These are known as glycolipids and glycoproteins; they have carbohydrate chains protruding from them out of the cell membrane surface. They are the first molecules to be encountered and recognized by other cells, so they are used to identify the cell. Carbohydrates are used as the ligand component of glycoconjugates (glycoproteins and glycolipids) and their structure varies depending on the structure of the molecule it binds to, ranging from small saccharide units to very large polysaccharide chains. Although the carbohydrate chains are generally oligosaccharides and can either be straight or branched. Cell surface carbohydrates coat the exterior surfaces of cell membranes and extend from the phospholipid bilayer into the aqueous environment outside the cell presenting information rich binding sites and have the potential to carry necessary information to act as markers for cellular recognition. It was actually ironic that she wore white because the reader knows of her true characteristics, even though she was represented as lovable character in the book and as well as the movie. It foreshadowed that his time was running short and soon something might happen to prevent him from marrying Daisy. In the end, Wilson cut Gatsby s time short by killing him, for basically no reason as he didn t even kill Myrtle. Overall, the clock represented time and how it played a reoccurring roll in the novel. Time separated Daisy and Gatsby from getting married five years prior to the setting of the story. • 12. Socioeconomic Status And Mental Health Does one s socioeconomic status affect their mental health? Mental health is a broad category that refers to our mental well being. Mental illness refers to many different conditions that impact our mood, our emotions, our thinking, and our affect. Depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia are all examples of mental health conditions. Socioeconomic status (SES) is a term that social scientists use to capture many different factors. It refers to a person s income level, education, and general position in society. It s essentially a combined measure of how we re doing. Lower socioeconomic status is related to higher levels of mental illness. This is known as a negative correlation in research terms. In other words, as one variable increases, the other decreases. In this case, as SES decreases, the incidence of mental health issues generally increases. Socioeconomic status (SES) is evaluated as a combination of factors, including income, level of education, and occupation. It is a way of looking at how individuals or families fit into society using economic and social measures. Its roots can be traced to ancient Greece and it flourished for a while in the eighteenth century in Britain and America, a product of the Enlightenment. Many of America s founding fathers Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, James Madison and the British radical Thomas Paine were Deists. Deism was regarded by those who espoused it, to be a personal philosophy. Deists were not proselytizers striving to win converts which proved to be its weakness. While evangelical religion brought large numbers into its pews throughout the nineteenth century, Deism dwindled. Yet despite reports to the contrary it did not disappear. • 23. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind By Michel Gondry Essay A hollow feeling inside of your chest consumes your body. The room is filled with your sobs and hiccuped breaths. A million thoughts are racing through your head; none of these are positive. You tell yourself that you wish you never met them. You plea at the universe to take away all the memories of them. You beg to never again feel this type of agony. If possible, would you eradicate the memory of another human? In the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) do exactly this. Directed by Michel Gondry, this American romantic comedy wonderfully expresses the idea that a person s memories are fundamental in human growth. Through cinematography, lighting, and character development, Gondry successfully directs one of the best twenty first century films. The cinematography of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind effectively develops the film s plot and characters. In the beginning of the movie, Joel is shown awaking in a close up. This shot easily shows the gloomy expression on his face, asking the audience to question why he is upset. Hand held cameras provide the story with a natural, more realistic feel, inviting the audience into Joel s memories. The hand held cameras provide the film with an imperfect, human perspective. This can be viewed primarily in the honeymoon on ice scene. Slight shakes of the camera are evident. In the scene when Joel and Clementine see each other on the train to Montauk, far ... Their independence will be not only in finding their way around but also in knowing where to locate things and who people are. Now many people argue they re in middle school, and they re older now, meaning we have to be independent anyway. But even though we are older, that doesn t mean we always know where things are or we always know what to do. That s like saying a newborn can survive without caretaker. It s as simple as this; newborns know very little about the world and how it works as to new students knowing very little about new schools and how they work. So regardless of maturity or age, people need to be dependent before they can be independent, and the ambassador program is a good form of that temporary dependence. Another benefit of the ambassador program would be that it would allow new students to become comfortable and gain a form of confidence. It s important for new student/staff to be comfortable because if they weren t think of how difficult it would be for them to focus not only in class but just in general. At this point in the poem, the speaker s attitude toward loss is rather blasĂ© due to the fact that the items she has misplaced holds no emotional attachment and can be replaced. As the poem progresses, the misplaced or forgotten items become concepts such as names and ideas, and therefore carry more of an impact. For example, forgetting someone s name, however not uncommon, can be associated with feelings of embarrassment from the forgettor, and annoyance from the forgotten when they discover that they were not important enough to be remembered. The speaker simply shrugs off these losses because None of [them] will bring disaster, as mentioned in line 9. Emotion, often associated with memories is introduced in line 10 when the speaker announces, I lost my mother s watch. An item such as a mother s watch holds sentimental value, unlike the previously mentioned keys; however, the speaker repeats, I miss them, but it wasn t a disaster, (line 15) indicating that the watch was merely a material possession crowded with memories. At this point, the reader recognizes the feeling of missing something associated with greater losses of objects and ideas the speaker regards with more emotional attachment. • 38. What Are The 4 Laws Of Thermodynamics The four fundamental laws of thermodynamics are used to define how physical quantities behave under various circumstances, these include energy, entropy, and temperature. The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy in the universe is always conserved, therefore it cannot be created or destroyed, and it can only be transformed from one form to another. The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy of isolated systems always increases, this means that in all processes of energy exchange, if no energy is introduced to or leaves a system, the sum of potential energy will be less than initial condition. The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of a system is maintained as the temperature decreases to absolute zero. The fourth law of thermodynamics defines temperature equilibrium between systems. The first law of thermodynamics defines that energy can be transformed but not destroyed. It s used to define the internal energy contained in a system. It s formulated by pointing out the change in internal energy in system minus work and heat that add and subtract energy in the system. Moreover, the second law helps to clarify different ways in which motors change heat into mechanical work, for example in steam turbines and car engines. The chemical toxins work silently through the food chain and accumulate and magnify in human and non human bodies. Like the constant dripping of water that in turn wears away the hardest stone, this birth to death contact with dangerous chemicals may well prove disastrous. (Carson, 1962, 158). Carson is critical of both the advertising techniques of chemical companies, lulled by the soft sell and the hidden persuader (Carson , 1962, 158) and government agencies including the Federal Aviation Agency s assurances that planes spraying insecticide were authorized to fly low.
