The period of the twentieth century, specifically the nineteen twenties, was a historically significant
event in history due to the dramatic changes politically and socially. In this time period there was
many altercations between two specific groups who had completely different outlooks on change.
Modernists, or people who tended to be in favor of new ideas, styles and social trends, embraced the
idea of change during this time period whereas traditionalist, or people who are opposed to change,
had deep respect for long held cultural and religious values that they believed should not be broken
under any circumstances. The disputes between the traditionalist and modernist over religious beliefs

In stories, there is always a pattern that they all have in common. This certain pattern is known as the
Hero s Journey. There are varying descriptions of the Hero s Journey steps but only the steps that are
set by the teacher is used. These steps are the The Call , Allies , Preparation , The Guardians of the
Threshold , Crossing the Threshold , Road of Trials , Saving Experience , Transformation , and

With this sentence, you can see that Brent only prepared materials to build the whirligig. This shows
that Brent is prepared to go on his journey because he has all of his necessaries in his luggage for the
quest. Also, this shows that Brent still is self conscious, comparing others to him. Therefore his
preparation is done, and he next needs to cross the Threshold blocking him from starting his quest.
There are no Guardians of the Threshold in this story unless Brent s parents are counted in the first
place. The book stated that Brent s parent raised one objection after another (Fleischman 41). The
Guardians of the Threshold usually prevents the hero from going on his quest, and this statement
shows that Brent s parents are objecting on the quest. If their objection is fulfilled, Brent wouldn t
have gone on the quest at first. This fits the standards of being the Guardians of the Threshold but
nothing is done. In conclusion, it could be called the Guardians of the Threshold by some.

writer. There are contrasts too, in Death of a Naturalist ; the writer is concentrating on himself and his
own experiences in life, rather than the experiences of others. In Digging , the opposite is true, as the

Death of Naturalist is about a young boy, his love for nature and how he relishes every aspect of the
countryside. A part of this passion is being aware of a host of small things that many people would
find insignificant; animals, frogspawn and all the noises of life around him. This changes in the
second stanza. The poet has a change of heart and he seems to retreat from the nature he previously
loved. He writes:
I sickened, turned and ran
So we can see he doesn t feel the same passion about nature any more, it was a death of the naturalist.
Digging is about a young man who feels that he is not worthy to follow in his father s footsteps. He
tells the reader about how great his father and grandfather were, but throughout the poem he says very
little about himself. Towards the end his mind is changed. Although his ancestors were hard working
men who earned their living through digging, he feels that his writing is a worthy path to follow. He
will dig with his pen.
Toward the end of both these poems the feelings change. In each poem the writer feels one thing at the
beginning, but toward the conclusion his mind is changed, either for the better, in Digging , or for the
worse, in Death of a Naturalist . It could be said that he had a change in perspective.

On November 8, 2015, I attended the Mixed Chamber Ensembles at Dr. Bobbie Bailey Family
Performance Center, Morgan Hall. I was very happy that weekend, because my family came up to see
me. I home town is four hours away, so this was the first time I have seen my family in two months.
There were three different opportunities to attend the Mixed Chamber Ensembles on Sunday. I choose
to attend the one at ten o clock with my friend Bria decided to attend the assembly with me and she
thought it was a new experience. Once I attended the Ensemble, I soon realized that it was a recital for
younger teens and children to perform. The first composition they played was Antique Hungarian

exercise and daily walks and runs to survive just like we do. Dog parks are expensive but they are
needed. People say dogs are for the most part loud and noisey. Just think about it if we were to build a
park made just for dogs , there would be alot less problems. Think about it, for the people who dont
