strong sense of the setting in the first few lines of the story when Cisneros begins to use Spanish

readers mind. For example, when I read Spanish words I think of warmth, cinnamon, and chili
peppers. Also, based on the title of the text and the first few sentances I deduced that the story
would be about an Americanized Mexican family, and therefore began to think of the conflicts

paragraph of the story, a classic church scene is described establishing the location of the setting.
As the story continues, readers get the impression that the family does not have very much money
because of the way the different characters are described and because the narrator says, We can

In J.M. Barrie s classic children s story Peter Pan, a young boy named Peter takes three children
on the adventure of their dreams in a faraway place called Neverland. The story, revolving

and their elaborate fantasies that might actually be true if they could only remember. With sword
fights between pirates, fairy dust, flying away from home right out the window and death being
only an awfully big adventure (113), not many can see how they would ever forget such a place,
but by keeping their windows open and unlocked, any child can enter Neverland through their
dreams. Barrie s use of the window isn t simply an entrance or exit way for Peter, it represents
the blurred line between a child s dreams and reality, how the trust of a mother s love can be the
best form of hope, and how every child should cherish their years of youth and innocence when

Humans have a natural ability to know what is right and just and what is wrong. However, people
are tempted on a regular basis, and often times people choose to go against what is right for what
they want at the moment. Nathaniel Hawthorne describes the struggle of one man with his personal
temptations in the short story, Young Goodman Brown. Through a trip into the woods on a dark,
gloomy night, Young Goodman Brown battles between what he knows is right and what sparks
his curiosity what the others and doing in the woods the same theme portrayed in Anton
Chekhov s The Lady with the Dog. In this short story, Young Goodman Brown loses his faith in
humanity s ability to do good when he is convinced the great lie by the dark one . Young
Goodman Brown (YGB) is tempted by the devil throughout the story to remind the reader what
is feeding the lie to him. The dark one is an allegory to the devil, dressed darkly with a serpent

Many stories have a horror theme, which show characters becoming insane. The examples of
those types of insanity stories are, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Survivor Type
