The Decline Of Newspaper Is Bad For The Us Analysis
The age of newspapers has passed. Laura Finley s The Decline of Newspapers Is Bad for the US
asserts that without newspapers citizens are deprived of information essential to understanding their
world . Newspapers are the source at which the world communicates and when they come to a cease,
the information also ceases.
Finley s asserts that Journalist, scholars, and activists worry that, if the trend continues, the US will be
a nation without newspapers , which infers a nation without newspapers could be the downfall to its
government. A democratic government is a government which the people rule but if the people are
uninformed the government is skewed. Finley quotes Thomas Jefferson s opinion on government and
newspapers to give the reader someone to relate to, he is the people s common factor. Thomas
Jefferson once said that, should we have to choose between government without newspapers or
newspapers without government, he would surely favor the newspapers . The newspapers themselves
give the public information so that it can petition, speak, and write when dissatisfied; can vote with
adequate knowledge about the candidates and issues; and can understand their civic duties and ...

The funds that support the newspapers are being cut that pay reliable reporters. Without these reliable
reporters the information that is spread to the public is less dependable. Finley uses a study by
Princeton University that found a decline in candidates willing to challenge incumbents and a decrease
in the number of people voting in local elections as a result of the 2007 closure of the Cincinnati Post .
Princeton s study invokes that the loss of their newspaper created a loss in public knowledge of
voting. This exacerbated decline in readership vastly relies on the fact that people will determine the

Joseph Stalin s Use Of Sexism In Russia
Crude, primitive, vulgar ; muddle instead of music ; a cacophonous and pornographic insult to the
Soviet people . Pravda, the Soviet government newspaper, made these comments after Joseph Stalin
attended a 1936 performance of Dmitri Shostakovich s opera. His second and final opera, Lady
Macbeth of Mtsensk, got it him into all sorts of trouble because it denounced sexism in Russia. After
this intense criticism from the government and threats of arrest, Shostakovich was forced to withdraw
the premiere of his equally controversial Fourth Symphony. In order to please the government, he
quickly put together a more traditional, triumphant Fifth Symphony (1937); he even referred to it as a
Soviet artist s reply to just criticism.

The Rocking Horse Winner Essay
The Rocking Horse Winner
When a person is lucky, it does not have to mean that they are fortunate with money. Luck is the
chance for things to go the way you want them to go with out having any control over the situation. In
The Rocking Horse Winner, Hester, the mother seems to believe that luck is strictly having money,
and when there is no money, there is no luck. Hester s idea of luck meaning money brings forth the
two ideas of greed and death throughout the story. Money plays a huge part in this story. Hester, the
mother, is obsessed with having more and more money. She lives the life of a woman with money,
never allowing anyone to see past the family s small income, The mother had a small income, and the

When he realized just how much money he had made, he took 5,000 pounds of it to the family lawyer
to be given a thousand pounds to his mother, annually. But Paul didn t end here. He continued to bet
and make more and more money. When Paul s mother received the letter from the lawyer, she got
even more greedy. She went to the lawyer and asked if she could have all the money at once. Paul
agreed that this would be okay. But the house just whispered louder, with more greed. Paul s mother
had used the money foolishly again, instead of using it wisely to pay off her debt. The voices in the
house suddenly went mad, like a chorus of frogs on a spring evening. There were certain new
furnishings and Paul had a new tutor #8230;there were flowers in the winter, and a blossoming of the
luxury that Paul s mother had been used to (442). Paul s mother and Paul s greed amplified: Paul
continued to bet to make more money for his mother, and his mother kept spending money that she
didn t have. Eventually the luck, or in this case, the unluck, had to run out, and it did. Paul s continual
confusion leads him to find his luck of know the winning horses. Paul is successful at reaching this
goal and fulfilling his mother s definition of luck. The whole belief of his mother s was the basis for
Paul s confusion. Good luck for Paul would be to see his mother happy. He knew that money was

If the portion size is too small, consumers may consider Chipotle as inadequate place to go when they
are hungry. In addition, if the customers go Chipotle with the expectation of filling up their stomach,
but the perceived performance is lower than the expected performance, consumers would be
dissatisfied with the service. Nevertheless, Chipotle has to consider that portion size is usually larger
in the US than in the Europe. Researchers compared restaurants in Philadelphia and in Paris, and
found that American restaurants served on average 25% more food than their French counterparts
(Shuster, Vigna, Sinha Tontonoz, 2012). The difference is even bigger for beverages served in fast
food restaurants. Currently, McDonald s small sized drink served in the US contains 16 ounces of
liquids, which is 18% more than the medium sized drink (40cl, approx. 13.52 ounces) served in Spain.
Taking into account the data above, Chipotle may reduce its current portion size served in the US by
approximately 25% when it enters to Spain. By doing so, Chipotle may save significant amount of
material costs while still live up Spanish consumers expectation about the portion

CURRENT AFFAIRS HANDOUT 11
SYRIAN CIVIL WAR
Gen
1. The Syrian civil war also commonly known as the Syrian uprising is an ongoing armed conflict in
Syria between forces loyal to the Syrian Baath Party government and those seeking to oust it. The
conflict began on 15 March 2011, with popular demonstrations that grew nationwide by April 2011.
These demonstrations were part of the wider Middle Eastern protest movement known as the Arab
Spring. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al Assad, whose family has held the
presidency in Syria since 1971, as well as the end to over four decades of Baath Party rule. In April
2011, the Syrian Army was deployed to quell the uprising. After months of military sieges, the ...

Character Analysis Of The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant, directed by Brad Bird, is an animated movie filmed in 1999. The movie concentrates
on the insubstantial town of Rockwell, during the Cold War, with a curious young boy named Hogarth
Hughes (voiced by Eli Marienthal), son of Annie Hughes (voiced by Jennifer Aniston). Annie is a
waitress who worries for her son, knowing he sneaks out of the house while she works late shifts. One
night, Hogarth s curiosity spikes after hearing a story of a giant, alien weapon robot from a drunk
sailor at the diner his mother worked at. He runs into the forest and sees the Iron Giant (voiced by Vin
Diesel) being electrocuted at a power plant. Hogarth helps the giant alien robot, which ultimately leads
to their friendship. Though the Iron Giant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hogarth, Dean, and the Iron Giant have fun together and develop a true friendship. The Iron Giant
shows that humans need more than just one friend. Their friendship together, made the Iron Giant
want to be better and work hard to contain the defensive mechanism that would occur whenever it
recognized threat. The Iron Giant wanted to be a satisfactory friend to Hogarth and Dean. Some
human qualities of friendship are protection and provision, the Iron Giant did both of these, even
though he was not human. The next way that human emotion is shown, was by the giant trying to be
good to show to Hogarth, and himself, that he was capable of being more than just a destructive
machine. Acknowledging that the Iron Giant probably was not meant for friendly purposes, Hogarth
helped the robot when the robot began to automatically respond to threatening situations by aiming a
gun at the threat in defense. Looking at the Iron Giant, Hogarth stated, It s bad to kill. Guns kill. And
you don t have to be a gun. You are who you choose to be. You choose. Choose. Hogarth helped the
robot see that he was capable of being more than what he was created for: destruction and evil.
Hogarth could see that the giant did not want to do evil, and that he could not control his automatic
defense mechanisms which responded only when the robot felt he was in danger. The giant had gained
the trust and friendship of Hogarth, but the

Essay on Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town Analysis
The poem anyone lived in a pretty how town by E.E. Cummings talks about the cycle of life and the
importance of structure, symbolism, and language of the poem. For instance, the poem has nine
stanzas, which has a rhyming pattern of AABC. The rhythm of the poem is significant for it supports
one of themes, the cycle of life. Cumming uses season to explain the poem s progress. spring summer
autumn winter (3) and sun moon stars rain (8) symbolizes time passing, which represents life passing.
In the poem, as the seasons and skies rotate, life continues along with them. In addition, the uses of the

The plot of anyone lived in a pretty how town is simple, but it is the choices of language that makes
this poem complex. The story begins with anyone, which can be considered as a specific person.
Anyone is a guy who the Women and men, or the someones and everyones, of the town don t care
about, because he is different than they are. Although, the children of the town can see the love of
Anyone and Noone, but even they begin to dislike the difference of Anyone as down they forgot as up
they grew. (10) Anyone and Noone soon later are buried side by side, while the people carry on living
their lives, learning nothing from Anyone and Noone. Cumming uses his own grammar to describe the
relationship of Anyone and Noone. Anyone is not just anyone so using anyone s any was all to her
(16) shows the appreciation for Anyone s individuality. Because of Anyone s any , this confronts the
someones (17) or everyones (17) making Anyone unique. The poem reveals the love that Anyone and
Noone shares. This love they have, everyones does not have. When Anyone sang his didn t and danced
his did (4) and Noone laughed his joy and cried his grief (14), gave differences of when someones and
everyones laughed their cryings and did their dance (18). Rhythmically, the poem can be thought as a
free verse. Basically, it is in past tense. For example, at the point when Anyone

How Water Hardness Is Important For Homeowners And...
Whether we realize it or not, water is surrounding us in different forms everywhere. Water actually
makes up about 70% of Earth. Water is overall known as a good solvent that dissolves minerals it
comes in contact with. As water moves through earth, it dissolves minerals and holds them in solution.
The amount of metal cations, such as Calcium (Ca^2+) and Magnesium (Mg^2+) in water became
known as water hardness . Water hardness can be detected by white residue and crystal like rocks
when heated. Understanding water hardness is important to us because it has proven to create
problems both in our households and in industry (1). These problems lead to expenses for
homeowners and industry owners, they will end up spending money on expensive cleaning chemicals
and machinery cleaners. In our household we water hardness pop up as soap scum in our dishes and in
our laundry. Hard water also produces scale which, in industry and again in households can narrow
pipes, block tubes, cause problems in brewing facilities, and can produce problems in farmland. The
greater the presence of Calcium and Magnesium in water defines its hardness. For example a water
sample with a large concentration of these two cations, along with smaller amounts of other
polyvalent cations, is considered to be hard. (1, 2) And a sample with a smaller concentration of the
cations is considered soft. Below is a table of the determination of water hardness scale.

Key Factors Of Successful Mitigation Projects Throughout...
Problem Statement Emergency managers in the United States have it easy compared to individuals
who work in the developing world. Although challenges like limited budgets or political will may be
universal problems, in places like Uganda, they are magnified. These areas are home to the most
vulnerable populations. Where poverty, little to no infrastructure or government services, and a lack of
access to education, create the potential for a disaster to inflict deviating damage. Mitigation programs
have the greatest potential for reducing the impact of such events. However, unlike the United States,
these countries often times don t have the resources to establish and maintain many types of mitigation
programs. As the world has started to become a globalized community, many industrialized nations
have recognized this need, and want to provide aid to these countries. Because of the reality that this
aid has its limits, and that every aid dollar is precious, it is important to be able to maximize the return
on this investment. This Research project will identify key factors of successful mitigation projects
throughout the developing world in order to establish a set of guidelines for future projects. With these
guidelines, valuable time and resources will be saved and mitigation projects will have maximum
impact on the communities they serve. This is not only a way of developing low cost projects to
developing nations, but it is a way of insuring that investors in these types

In the European level, EU are also did a lot of work trying to leading member states participate on the

Phantom Limb
The author starts off by recalling his personal experiences with phantom limbs. A young boy had a
phantom limb phenomenon. The term phantom limb was first used by Silas Weir Mitchell in 1872.
Phantom limb seems to occur because of the images created by the images of the body and makes the
person always believe that it is all there even after an amputation. The body is basically trying to make
sense of the amputation. It is not actually caused by incorrect neural activity. It is actually more built
from the part of the brain that creates the mental image of the body. Turns out on 90 percent of
amputee actually have a phantom limb experience. Researchers have tried to treat phantom limb with
the mirrors and Virtual Reality.
A phantom limb can actually be very painful and debilitating to a person and hinder their daily life.
Severe pain can also cause the patient to reject the use of a prosthetic limb in place of the amputated
one. Sadly most people do not find relief in many of the pain therapy options offered. Often if there

We have sadly not found a permanent solution to the problem but are working towards it. As of now,
though, we use mirrors and virtual reality techniques to try and alleviate the pain of phantom limbs. So
far we can say that the brain is partially involved in the problem. It seems that it want to believe it is
still there because it is just supposed to be. We know it is supposed to be there because of the
neuromatrix or our neurosignature. The neurosignature is basically the blueprint of our own body. It is
created from the time or birth and even infants who are born without limbs seem to have the phantom
limb experience. This is a social and individually debilitating problem because of the severe pain and
sometimes confusion if the parietal lobe is damaged. It is so painful most people cannot even find
relief from therapy

The Correlation Between Amounts Of Time Spent Playing...
What is the relationship between the amounts of time spent playing video games and your amount of
sleep?
Introduction
Nearly every day, you can read articles about urbanized countries throughout the world, with issues or
concerns arising from individuals playing video games for excessive amounts of time. Individuals
form addictions to a surge in excessive or violent behaviors, commonly found among teens or younger
children. Studies also indicate playing excessive amounts of video games can also have an effect on
your sleeping patterns in a negative way. For instance, playing an extreme amount of video games
prior to going to bed may create a more difficult time in falling asleep. So, I decided to take on a
similar yet different type of study to discover out how much video gaming an average high schooler
plays each night and how this may affect how many hours of sleep he/she receives. I was unable to
find any online articles for this type of study, so I decided to find out for myself using the high school
population at a local school. As the study began, I did believe that students who participated in
excessive video gaming may receive less sleep.
Statement of Task
The focus of this study was to investigate if the amount of time students spend playing video games
each evening may have an influence on the quantity of sleep the average high school student receives.
To determine this, I requested teachers to allow me to survey students during school hours in an

of her son. This journey comes after her son, who has always desired to meet his father, was tragically
hit by a car and killed while chasing down actresses of the play A Streetcar Named Desire. This play,
which Manuela was an actress in twenty years earlier, becomes small piece of her son she holds, since
it was the last thing she did with him before he was killed. This desire she feels to be complete is a
trait which recurs in a few other characters during the story. The characters that the desire to feel

throughout the film shares the same desire as the other characters to feel complete or to find someone
that completes us.
Most of us in this world, at one time or another, have felt the need to feel complete. Feeling that
something is missing and that whatever it is, will bring us happiness and fulfillment in our own lives.
For these characters the thing which they desire to complete them are other characters in the film. For
Manuela it is her son after he is hit by a car and killed, Esteban longs to know who his father is, and
Huma is chasing her lover Nina who will only give her pain. The journey to find completion or these

CASE QUESTIONS (Answer each question in about two paragraphs each. Use at least five references

It is still unclear if Marvin Ellison s turnaround plan will work or fail as miserably as Ron Johnson s
plan. Based on the case answer the following questions.
1. What is your assessment of the individual turnaround strategies CEO Marvin Ellison has put into
place?
Under former CEO Ron Johnson, J.C. Penney has experienced both a sustained competitive advantage
and sustained competitive disadvantage. At one time, the company was the leading competitor in its
industry. This was accomplished by outperforming other firms while achieving excellent numbers and

Aeneas Fights With Turnus Essay
Aeneas Fights With Turnus
In the Aeneid, Virgil describes many human qualities, problems and characteristics. Some examples
which I wish to illustrate can be found in the end of epic, in the scene of the final duel between Aeneas
and Turnus. Virgil also introduces a novel idea in his work. Both sides, the Trojans and the Latins, are
portrayed as noble people. Even though Aeneas is fated to win, and he is the hero of the work, the
opposing force, Turnus, is not portrayed as evil, but rather like a noble person in a very hard situation.
Virgil deals as much with physical and psychological problems Turnus faces, being an honest and
noble man, as he does with Aeneas s problems.
By the time the battle begins, Turnus knows that he will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She tried to deter Aeneas from his course to Italy while she perfectly knew that the decision of the
Fates was otherwise. Virgil makes it clear that humans and gods alike have the same irrational and
purely emotional desire to achieve that which they know cannot be achieved. This desire is present in
many episodes in the book. I think that Virgil is trying to tell his readers that this desire is a very
fundamental part of people. The drive to achieve the impossible is what always drove science and
human advancement. Virgil is making a comment on a very integral part of the human psyche. Both
Turnus and Aeneas, Venus and Juno have this characteristic. Virgil assigns the same feeling and
emotions to the heroes of both sides of the story.
During the duel of Aeneas and Turnus, Virgil takes another opportunity to describe the desire to
oppose fate. Turnus calls out to Aeneas : Your burning words, ferocious Trojan, do not frighten me; it
is the gods alone who terrify me, and Jupiter, my enemy (Book XII, 1189). The challenge Turnus saw
coming to him was not from Aeneas, but from the gods themselves. Still, by the next line, Turnus can
be observed trying to hurl a stone at Aeneas to continue the luckless fight. How eager Turnus seems to
prove his honor, and die for his belief. If Turnus knew that Jupiter was against him, he did not have
any doubt as to his own defeat. His death is near, and he is not afraid. A few paragraphs later however,

What Is The Role Of Sports In The 80 s
The origins of the Cold War from 1917 1945, the United States was faced with tough times during the
20 s and 30 s. The Great Depression led Americans to question capitalism due to Russia and their
communist beliefs doing well, even though Americans had no true context of what was really going on
in. This helped enforce the Soviets goal of international prestige. The Soviet sports system introduced
the raise the psychological and physical standards of their athletes by socializing social engineering
into a collective. There was early selection for individuals to determine which sport they would
specialize and develop in, and hockey was their go to. The Soviets won six straight and displayed their
dominance by beating the NHL All Stars 6 0. Hockey ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the 21st century ideal of consumerism, ESPN was the first to get rights to cover and film college
basketball. The first game they covered was the 1979 NCAA championship game between Indiana
State and Michigan State, which highlighted the future rivalry between Larry Bird and Ervin Magic
Johnson. These two helped pave the way of the NBA in the 80 s as flashy and faced pace. This is a
transition of the old school style of play of slowing the tempo and passing to find the open layup. For
example, the dunk contest helps with the flashy play with the dunks of Dominique Wilkins, Spud
Webb, and Michael Jordan. Everyone remembers Jordan s dunk from the free throw line, in which hits
the 21st century theme of making money. The commercial of Air Jordan was a success, in which leads
the development of the sport of having the best athletes go on TV and sell products. Also, athletes are
now looked upon as role models to their fans, which is another development of sports over the years.
Overall, the 80 s is the decade of trash talking, dunks, and long homeruns that helped develop sports
more into the side of entertainment and something fans would

compounds formed in many different solutions dissolved in water based on the conductivity of each.
Procedure: Refer to handout entitled Properties of Solutions: Electrolytes and Non Electrolytes
Materials: Refer to handout entitled Properties of Solutions: Electrolytes and Non Electrolytes Data
Observations: Solution Conductivity (μS/cm) A CaCl2 9100 μS/cm AAlCl3 11920 μS/cm A NaCl

C H2Odistilled 1 μS/cm C H2Otap 790 μS/cm C CH3OH 1 μS/cm C C2H6O2 2 μS/cm Conclusion:
1. The Group A compounds appear to be ionic because all of their conductivities are rather high.
Because of this, they would be expected to dissociate. 2. The Group A compounds have such large
differences in conductivity values even though they have the same concentration (0.05 M) because
conductivity is determined by ions, not concentration. Since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

If there were, this could cause other matter in the mixture to dissolve as well and conduct. This would
be measured by the probe but is not in fact part of the compound we were intending to measure, being
unaware of this, we most likely recorded it as solely the compound. A way to avoid this to the best of
our ability would be to make sure the water s conductivity is 0 μS/cm before dissolving the compound
in it. Secondly, the probe may not always be completely clean, therefore, a different compound could
accidentally be measured if it is not completely washed. This could be avoided by simply washing the
probe more thoroughly in water with a confirmed conductivity of 0 μS/cm, or even better, using a new
probe for each compound although that is not extremely

Contract For The Contract Of Contract
A condition is a term that is so essential to the agreement that its violation is considered a substantial
breach of contract performance. A violation of a condition is said to go to the root of the contract. A
guarantee is a contract term that is not so essential. A guarantee must be made, but a violation of it is
not considered to go to the root of the contract. This sense of warranty should not be confused with
other uses of the word such as in one year maintenance warranty . Damage is the remedy for breach of
warranty. Each contract of sale is likely to contain a number of terms and stipulations on the nature
and quality of the goods and their adequacy of the object of the buyer. All these terms are not likely to

Where a seller delivers defective goods, two questions immediately arise: a) What is the precise legal
basis of his liability, b) What rights does the buyer have against him. Although these questions appear
quite simple, the answers to them are difficult enough. The rights and remedies of the buyer often
depend on the classification of the terms. The terms of a contract are the essence of a contract and
indicate what the contract will do. For instance, the price of a good, the time of its promised delivery
and the description of the good will all be terms of the contract. Before entering into a contract, a
series of statements are made by one party in order to encourage or induce the other party to enter into
contract. A dispute may later arise as to which of the statements made should be considered a part, or a
term, of the contract, and which should be taken as merely pre contract talk, and therefore, not a part
or term of the contract. Parties to a contract are bound only by its terms, not by any peripheral
statements that may have been made prior to or after entering into contract. A representation which is
subsequently made part of the contract ceases to be a representation and becomes something more,
viz., a promise that such a thing is or shall be. The question then arises whether this representation,
which has ceased to be a mere representation, and has become a term of the contract, is

Stories Behind Three Names Essay
Thirty Stories Behind Three Names
My name has been around for twenty years. Yeah sure, each part of my name has been around for who
knows how long, but when you put them all together it becomes an original and only been around for
the twenty years that I have been here. Each part has its own story about how I got the name that I did.
My mom, my dad, and my grandma all had something to do with it. All the parts of my name, and
how I got them has helped shape me into who I am and perked am interest in how others got their
names.
In 1997, my name was unique and not very popular. Now, if you put me in a classroom with twenty
people, there is at least one other person with my name. The Social Security Administration ranked
Madison as the second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stereotypes of my first name are fairly interesting. Sometimes I m a boy, but usually Madison is
negatively stereotyped. Madison is snooty and intimidating. The name of the rich, mean, rude girl,
who is always the antagonist of the movie is named Madison pretty often. If I have an interview or am
getting recognized for something, I stick to Madison because it is a more professional name than my
nickname Maddie. Maddie is a more southern and inviting name. When I was a server at Cracker
Barrel I got twice as many tips because Maddie was on my apron instead of Madison. Maddie isn t an
intimidating name. It s actually friendly. Maddie was a nickname given to me by my grandpa when I
was little. He said that I was too much of a tom boy on the farm to be called such a girly name like
Madison. The name stuck. Everyone calls me Maddie instead of Madison including myself. My mom
is the only person other than an occasional teacher who actually calls me Madison. Mom says, I would
have named you Maddie if that s what I wanted to call you. I hear my mom say this phrase at least
once a month. I like both of the names I was given. I can choose who I want to be or what first
impression I want to give just by choosing what name I introduce myself

Atomic Bomb Essay
The Atomic Bomb was the deadliest weapons in the history of war. Throughout World War II one of
the most stubborn countries to surrender was Japan who relentlessly fought against the United States
of America. After failing to defeat America, Japan was overwhelmed by allied forces. Staying with
tradition however, Japan would rather die in battle than to surrender. The Soviet Union also fought
against America but that was towards the end of the war. The United States dropped both of the
Atomic Bombs in order to intimidate the Soviet Union and to make Japan to surrender
unconditionally.

To be captured was a disgrace and extremely frowned upon in Japan. America gave Japan fair warning
about an explosive device and if they did not declare a surrender, America would use it against them.
Unfortunately they do not heed warning. On August 6, 1945, during World War II (1939 45), an
American B 29 bomber dropped the world s first deployed Atomic Bomb over the Japanese city of
Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people; tens
of thousands more would later die of radiation exposure (History.com) America kept its word and the
first bomb struck Hiroshima. Many casualties were taken in Japan and it severely hurt Japan s spirit
and the nation s physical abilities. Japan however did not stop fighting until a second Atomic Bomb
was dropped in Japan. Three days later, on August 9, a plutonium implosion type (Fat Man) bomb was
dropped on Nagasaki. Within the first two to four months following the bombings, the acute effects of
the Atomic Bombings had killed 90,000 146,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000 80,000 in Nagasaki;
roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day. During the following months, large
numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness
and malnutrition. In both cities, most of the dead were

Language
Assignment 2: Figurative Language versus Literal Language
The lack of exposure to non literal forms of language makes it difficult to engage in productive
thinking. Having the capacity to understand figurative language increases our ability to communicate
with each other. By increasing our word bank we expand our knowledge base and increase our
thinking capacity. Below are a list of ten words with their meaning, definitions, examples and
appropriate circumstances in which to use them.
1. Describe the meaning and function of each term.
1. Idiom is a language, dialect or speaking style peculiar to a people.
2. Analogy is a similarity between two like subjects on which a comparison can be based.
3. Metaphor is a figure of speech in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A good example is from Wordsworth s I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud :
A host of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
He doesn t say many or a lot of daffodils, he uses the word host. That means a huge number of
daffodils. Later, he personifies the daffodils, and personification will be covered later on.
Another example is from The Eagle by Tennyson,
He clasps the crag with crooked hands.
The hard consonant sounds add even more to the imagery here.
Simile
A simile compares two things using the words like and as. Examples include: * busy as a bee * clean
as a whistle * brave as a lion * stand out like a sore thumb * as easy as shooting fish in a barrel * as
dry as a bone * as funny as a barrel of monkeys * they fought like cats and dogs * like watching grass
grow
Metaphor
When you use a metaphor, you make a statement that doesn t make sense literally, like time is a thief.
It only makes sense when the similarities between the two things become apparent or someone
understands the connection.
Examples include: * the world is my oyster * you are a couch potato * time is money * he has a heart
of stone * America is a melting pot * you are my sunshine
Alliteration
Alliteration is the easiest of the examples of figurative language to spot. It is a repetition of the first
consonant sounds in several words. Some good examples

Beveridge Report On The Welfare State
This essay will discuss the key points of the Beveridge report (1942), and evaluate the significance of
the report on the welfare state. In November 1942, William Beveridge presented a report called, Social
Insurance and Allied Services to parliament. This was a summary of principles to improve upon the
existing welfare benefits system, to benefit working people and the population. The document
proposed a new system to be operated by one governing agency, called Social Security. This would be
put in place by the state after World War 2 had ended. Overall Beveridge created the most
revolutionary document in our history. Beveridge has played a significant role in evolving the Welfare
State over the decades. (Robinson, 2003).

Administration The Social Insurance scheme would need to make big changes to the administration
process for this scheme to run smoothly and be successful. Beveridge wanted every worker to obtain
one insurance document weekly, rather than two. He saw this as an opportunity for the new system to
be under one governing agency called The Ministry of Social Security. The new system also
implemented classes to the National Insurance scheme, such as: Class I for employees: Class II for
Employers, traders, self employed and any other independent workers: Class III Housewives (this has
now been amended for all people of working age, who have had a break in employment, or earn too
little for it to be recorded): Class IV Others of working age or not working (self employed).
The National Insurance scheme is still in force today, some changes have since been made to the
insurance classes, but it still has the same point. The class you pay depends on your employment
status and how much you earn, and whether you have any gaps in your National Insurance record. A
great way to make the National Insurance more functional was changing the original two piece
document just to one. Over 20 million people received these documents, so in essence this saved time,
money and paperwork. Beveridge s overall goal was to set in motion a strong Social Insurance
Scheme that was functional and up to date, benefiting all involved to make the

The silence grew long. Finally, Williams turned to look at Barton. Speechless was not a word most
people could imagine applying to Jim Barton. His energy and outspokenness as head of the Loan
Operations department made him one of IVK s most dynamic executives, a key player and a likely
CEO someday of a different company, if not this one. But the news Williams had conveyed moments
before had left Barton silent, dumbfounded. A few minutes earlier Barton had rushed to William s
office, summoned for his turn with the new chief. All morning, leadership team members had marched
down that hallway one at a time, each after receiving a phone call, each on a journey to discover his or
her fate. As the executive assistant greeted him courteously and waved him in, Barton allowed himself
some optimism. Most likely, he thought, he was about to receive a promotion. He d done a good job,
been a big contributor as the company had grown to its present size. Something like Chief Operating
Officer would fit him quite nicely. 1 The Hero Called to Action On the other hand, to hear that he
was being asked to leave would not have enormously surprised him. He hadn t done anything to
warrant such treatment. But unexpected things happen when companies are in crisis. The logic behind
executive appointments, retirements, resignations, and firings was rarely transparent. Sometimes,
Barton thought there was little logic to it at all. The timing of his meeting gave Barton reason

Impact Of Economic Liberalisation On Livelihoods
The Impact Of Economic Liberalisation On Livelihoods In Nigeria
Economic liberalization on livelihoods in Nigeria refers to how the decrease in government control,
through deregulation and lesser restrictions in the economy to promote greater participation of private
entities, serves as a means of securing the basic necessities of life i.e. food, water, shelter and clothing.
This is done in an effort to encourage economic development through the doctrine is associated with
classical liberalism. Following in the pattern of major economic reforms of emerging markets such as
Brazil, China and India, Nigeria has followed the same path of economic liberalisation to ameliorate
itself in the global competition, in order to achieve a higher standard of living.
In Nigeria, economic liberalization through deregulation and privatization, has been implemented for
various reasons, such as the demand for efficient and effective Public Enterprises, reduction in
external borrowing, stronger capital markets, and improve accountability, but most important of all,
for generation of employment and sustainable livelihoods for the betterment of Nigerian welfare
(World Bank, 2013).
SAP and NEEDS.
Economic reform through liberalization was first introduced in Nigeria in 1986 through the IMF s
Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP), which was introduced to many sub Saharan African
countries as a result of the economic downturn of the 1980s. This liberalization programme resulted in

Laura Finley s The Decline of Newspapers Is Bad for the US asserts that without newspapers citizens are deprived of information essential to understanding their world . Newspapers are the source at which the world communicates and when they come to a cease, the information also ceases. Finley s asserts that Journalist, scholars, and activists worry that, if the trend continues, the US will be a nation without newspapers , which infers a nation without newspapers could be the downfall to its government. A democratic government is a government which the people rule but if the people are uninformed the government is skewed. Thomas Jefferson once said that, should we have to choose between government without newspapers or newspapers without government, he would surely favor the newspapers . Princeton s study invokes that the loss of their newspaper created a loss in public knowledge of voting. Pravda, the Soviet government newspaper, made these comments after Joseph Stalin attended a 1936 performance of Dmitri Shostakovich s opera. His second and final opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, got it him into all sorts of trouble because it denounced sexism in Russia. After this intense criticism from the government and threats of arrest, Shostakovich was forced to withdraw the premiere of his equally controversial Fourth Symphony. The Iron Giant wanted to be a satisfactory friend to Hogarth and Dean. Some human qualities of friendship are protection and provision, the Iron Giant did both of these, even though he was not human. The next way that human emotion is shown, was by the giant trying to be good to show to Hogarth, and himself, that he was capable of being more than just a destructive machine. Acknowledging that the Iron Giant probably was not meant for friendly purposes, Hogarth helped the robot when the robot began to automatically respond to threatening situations by aiming a gun at the threat in defense. Looking at the Iron Giant, Hogarth stated, It s bad to kill. Guns kill. And you don t have to be a gun. You are who you choose to be. You choose. Choose. Hogarth helped the robot see that he was capable of being more than what he was created for: destruction and evil. Water is overall known as a good solvent that dissolves minerals it comes in contact with. As water moves through earth, it dissolves minerals and holds them in solution. The amount of metal cations, such as Calcium (Ca^2+) and Magnesium (Mg^2+) in water became known as water hardness . Water hardness can be detected by white residue and crystal like rocks when heated. Understanding water hardness is important to us because it has proven to create problems both in our households and in industry (1). These problems lead to expenses for homeowners and industry owners, they will end up spending money on expensive cleaning chemicals and machinery cleaners. In our household we water hardness pop up as soap scum in our dishes and in our laundry. Hard water also produces scale which, in industry and again in households can narrow pipes, block tubes, cause problems in brewing facilities, and can produce problems in farmland. The greater the presence of Calcium and Magnesium in water defines its hardness. For example a water sample with a large concentration of these two cations, along with smaller amounts of other polyvalent cations, is considered to be hard. Where poverty, little to no infrastructure or government services, and a lack of access to education, create the potential for a disaster to inflict deviating damage. Mitigation programs have the greatest potential for reducing the impact of such events. However, unlike the United States, these countries often times don t have the resources to establish and maintain many types of mitigation programs. As the world has started to become a globalized community, many industrialized nations have recognized this need, and want to provide aid to these countries. Because of the reality that this aid has its limits, and that every aid dollar is precious, it is important to be able to maximize the return on this investment. This Research project will identify key factors of successful mitigation projects throughout the developing world in order to establish a set of guidelines for future projects. With these guidelines, valuable time and resources will be saved and mitigation projects will have maximum impact on the communities they serve. • 19. The Correlation Between Amounts Of Time Spent Playing... What is the relationship between the amounts of time spent playing video games and your amount of sleep? Introduction Nearly every day, you can read articles about urbanized countries throughout the world, with issues or concerns arising from individuals playing video games for excessive amounts of time. Individuals form addictions to a surge in excessive or violent behaviors, commonly found among teens or younger children. Studies also indicate playing excessive amounts of video games can also have an effect on your sleeping patterns in a negative way. For instance, playing an extreme amount of video games prior to going to bed may create a more difficult time in falling asleep. So, I decided to take on a similar yet different type of study to discover out how much video gaming an average high schooler plays each night and how this may affect how many hours of sleep he/she receives. I was unable to find any online articles for this type of study, so I decided to find out for myself using the high school population at a local school. As the study began, I did believe that students who participated in excessive video gaming may receive less sleep. Statement of Task The focus of this study was to investigate if the amount of time students spend playing video games each evening may have an influence on the quantity of sleep the average high school student receives. To determine this, I requested teachers to allow me to survey students during school hours in an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. All About My Mother Character Analysis The film All About My Mother is a drama which sees a mother, Manuela, on a search to find the father of her son. This journey comes after her son, who has always desired to meet his father, was tragically hit by a car and killed while chasing down actresses of the play A Streetcar Named Desire. This play, which Manuela was an actress in twenty years earlier, becomes small piece of her son she holds, since it was the last thing she did with him before he was killed. This desire she feels to be complete is a trait which recurs in a few other characters during the story. The characters that the desire to feel complete is most shown in is Manuela, Esteban (her son), and Huma. Manuela is the main character who is on a journey to fill a void ... Esteban is a character who is shown as basically a mama s boy in the beginning of the film, but you learn this is caused just by the situation he was put in all his life, not knowing his father at all. He has the need to feel complete and finding his father is what he believes will do this for him. Huma is an actress who goes through the movie chasing a girl that will only bring her pain. Nina is this girl, as well as her co star in the play, A Streetcar Named Desire. Huma is constantly having to go through the pain of her lover being a junkie and is always in fear of losing her. As well she has to deal with knowing that Manuela s son died that night on his birthday partially because of her. Huma throughout the film shares the same desire as the other characters to feel complete or to find someone that completes us. Most of us in this world, at one time or another, have felt the need to feel complete. Feeling that something is missing and that whatever it is, will bring us happiness and fulfillment in our own lives. For these characters the thing which they desire to complete them are other characters in the film. For Manuela it is her son after he is hit by a car and killed, Esteban longs to know who his father is, and Huma is chasing her lover Nina who will only give her pain. • 22. Aeneas Fights With Turnus Essay Aeneas Fights With Turnus In the Aeneid, Virgil describes many human qualities, problems and characteristics. Some examples which I wish to illustrate can be found in the end of epic, in the scene of the final duel between Aeneas and Turnus. Virgil also introduces a novel idea in his work. Both sides, the Trojans and the Latins, are portrayed as noble people. Even though Aeneas is fated to win, and he is the hero of the work, the opposing force, Turnus, is not portrayed as evil, but rather like a noble person in a very hard situation. Virgil deals as much with physical and psychological problems Turnus faces, being an honest and noble man, as he does with Aeneas s problems. By the time the battle begins, Turnus knows that he will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She tried to deter Aeneas from his course to Italy while she perfectly knew that the decision of the Fates was otherwise. Virgil makes it clear that humans and gods alike have the same irrational and purely emotional desire to achieve that which they know cannot be achieved. This desire is present in many episodes in the book. I think that Virgil is trying to tell his readers that this desire is a very fundamental part of people. The drive to achieve the impossible is what always drove science and human advancement. Virgil is making a comment on a very integral part of the human psyche. Both Turnus and Aeneas, Venus and Juno have this characteristic. Virgil assigns the same feeling and emotions to the heroes of both sides of the story. During the duel of Aeneas and Turnus, Virgil takes another opportunity to describe the desire to oppose fate. Turnus calls out to Aeneas : Your burning words, ferocious Trojan, do not frighten me; it is the gods alone who terrify me, and Jupiter, my enemy (Book XII, 1189). The challenge Turnus saw coming to him was not from Aeneas, but from the gods themselves. Still, by the next line, Turnus can be observed trying to hurl a stone at Aeneas to continue the luckless fight. How eager Turnus seems to prove his honor, and die for his belief. If Turnus knew that Jupiter was against him, he did not have any doubt as to his own defeat. His death is near, and he is not afraid. A few paragraphs later however, ... Where a seller delivers defective goods, two questions immediately arise: a) What is the precise legal basis of his liability, b) What rights does the buyer have against him. Although these questions appear quite simple, the answers to them are difficult enough. The rights and remedies of the buyer often depend on the classification of the terms. The terms of a contract are the essence of a contract and indicate what the contract will do. For instance, the price of a good, the time of its promised delivery and the description of the good will all be terms of the contract. Before entering into a contract, a series of statements are made by one party in order to encourage or induce the other party to enter into contract. A dispute may later arise as to which of the statements made should be considered a part, or a term, of the contract, and which should be taken as merely pre contract talk, and therefore, not a part or term of the contract. Parties to a contract are bound only by its terms, not by any peripheral statements that may have been made prior to or after entering into contract. A representation which is subsequently made part of the contract ceases to be a representation and becomes something more, viz., a promise that such a thing is or shall be. The question then arises whether this representation, which has ceased to be a mere representation, and has become a term of the contract, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In November 1942, William Beveridge presented a report called, Social Insurance and Allied Services to parliament. This was a summary of principles to improve upon the existing welfare benefits system, to benefit working people and the population. The document proposed a new system to be operated by one governing agency, called Social Security. This would be put in place by the state after World War 2 had ended. The new system also implemented classes to the National Insurance scheme, such as: Class I for employees: Class II for Employers, traders, self employed and any other independent workers: Class III Housewives (this has now been amended for all people of working age, who have had a break in employment, or earn too little for it to be recorded): Class IV Others of working age or not working (self employed). The National Insurance scheme is still in force today, some changes have since been made to the insurance classes, but it still has the same point. The class you pay depends on your employment status and how much you earn, and whether you have any gaps in your National Insurance record. A great way to make the National Insurance more functional was changing the original two piece document just to one.
