Critical Analysis Of Doris Lessing
About the Author:
The Nobel laureate Doris Lessing is an African British writer of the Post War generation. She was
born in Persia (Iran) on October 22, 1919 to Captain Alfred Tayler and Emily Maude Tayler. Lessing
spent her early years in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In South Africa she was involved in the
Communist Party and black politics of violence. Lessing s oeuvre incorporates such diverse genres as
novels, short stories, poetry, drama, autobiography and other non fictional writing. In her fictional
works, Lessing has worked on diverse themes and employed a wide array of narrative techniques and
styles ranging from realism (socio political) of her early works to the surrealism, and science fiction of
some of her late literary career. Lessing focuses her attention on the 21st century s major issues in
novels. Doris Lessing is influenced by the ideas of Karl Marx, Idries Shah and Carl Jung. The
ideology of Karl Marx, theory of class struggle is implicitly reflected in her later novels. The novelist
since her childhood has experienced the pain of class ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Wohl s Theory Of Health And Social Care
Wohl (1983) produced a well researched and documented account of public health and development in
Britain; starting from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century. The author eloquently
described the horrendous and devastating levels of the nations poverty and poor health. Within
Victorian society few people were free from illness/disease, average lifespan, stench and impurified
water. The shift in socioeconomic differences, intolerable living conditions and significantly poor
working conditions took on an added dimension because of the increasing number of rural residents
relocating to towns in order to seek employment. This urban revolution resulted in a major health
crisis for the nation due to the rapid growths of towns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It proposed to address the social determinants of health, the conditions in which individuals are
conceived, develop, live, work and age and which can prompt health inequalities. It attracts further
thoughtfulness regarding that a greater number of people are living longer, however spending more
time in illness due to things such as poverty, lack of equitable service etc. The report, titled Fair
Society, Healthy Lives , proposes another approach to reduce health inequalities in England post 2010.
It contends that, customarily, government strategies have centered assets just on a specific areas of
society. To enhance wellbeing for every one of us and to decrease unfair and antiquated health
inequalities, greater movement and activity is required from a social perspective. The in depth report
contains numerous critical discoveries, some of which are condensed underneath. Individuals living in
the poorest regions in England will by and large have a mortality rate seven years earlier than
individuals living in the wealthiest neighbourhoods. Alongside this, individuals living in poorer areas
will not only have a reduced mortality but will have a greater chance of having greater chance of
illness and disability a normal distinction of 17 years. The Review highlights the social scale of health
inequalities put basically, the lower an individuals social economic status is can have a significant

The Shallows Essay
In today s era, we depend a lot on technology and the internet. For daily things such as school, work,
communication, and so much more. There is controversy between eras due to if the internet is a
positive or negative contribution. In the book, The Shallows: What the internet is doing to our brains,
by Nicholas Carr, it speaks about how the internet is changing a huge aspect of our lives. From our
thought process to our attention span. I believe that this generation and era, all together as a
community, is obsessed with the internet. I support Carr s side of writing the book because of the
amount of time and usage we sacrifice to the internet. We eventually learn to be so attached to this
media and internet. Being away from the internet grows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Chapter 6, it speaks about the challenges we have of being able to read a physical book. We have a
constant need and attraction to the internet which distracts us which makes us incapable. Most
students attempt to read a book in one sitting, hoping that they will succeed but in the harsh reality, it
is too difficult. Even if the phones, computers, or any form of tech is put away, we will find a new
type of distraction. Another huge problem with media is, Changes in reading style will also bring
changes in writing style, as authors and their publishers adapt to readers new habits and expectations.
(6.104) Meaning that with these changes of google and the internet, physical writing will transform in
some way. From the vocabulary that is being used or the tone that needs to show, writers will need to
to find ways to attract new readers. Students these days truly are dependent on google and it becomes
a challenge because there s always an option or urge to cheat. There are easy outlets to books such as
SparkNotes, eNotes, and so much more, but it could never compare to the actual book. Carr words it
as In the choices we have made, consciously or not, about how we use our computers, we have
rejected the intellectual tradition of solitary, single minded concentration, the ethic that the book

Historical And Environmental Aspects Of Theology
Ecological theology focuses on the scientific and environmental aspects of theology. It tries to
determine the proper relationship between nature and humans from a religious perspective.
Throughout history, Christians have turned to the Bible for advice on almost every aspect of life, but
only a select few have been asking questions about caring for the environment. The recent
environmental crisis has caused an increase in interest for this type of theology over the past fifty
years. Certain passages from the Bible calls Christians to love and care for each other and ultimately
for the environment. Advocators for creation care have found verses in the Bible that suggest that God
calls us to protect the Earth and serve as temporary stewards. Ecological theology seeks to find the
answers to how Christians can remain true to God s will in a time of environmental destruction and
what exactly is the Christian ecological responsibility. Throughout the old testament and the new
testament there are a multitude of verses that relate directly to the role God calls christians to play
regarding the environment. Some of the verses can be interpreted differently and the variety can lead
to confusion about Gods true will. However, If Christians choose to look closely at the Bible they can
find very specific sources that support the need to care for God s creation. Leviticus 25:23 states The
land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as

Local Law Enforcement Roles
Local law enforcement has several important roles in countering terrorism. One critical function in
responding to terrorism is their role as first responders and providers of basic security (Cordner, pg 2).

responding to the attack site. Local law enforcement can also be responsible for protecting possible

Themes Of Unwholly Society
An Unwholly Society
The dystopian novel Unwholly, the second book in the Unwind series by Neal Shusterman, is a
twisted story of a futuristic world where life is not valued in the same way as it is today. When
government advertises and pays citizens to make bad choices, it makes the society corrupt and
inhumane. One corrupt thing about this society is that parents can choose to Unwind their children.
Unwinding is when parents can turn their kids over to the government and the government takes the
children apart and uses their body parts for different purposes. A possible theme for Unwholly is that
by following a corrupt society, people begin to develop selfish behavior.
Neal Shusterman uses intense actions and exaggerated description to make his books unique and to
help show the theme and help the reader picture the scene. One area of the book that shows
Shusterman s craft is Starkey s goodbye scene. The book states Stop! yells their father, as their mother
begins to cry (Shusterman 7). These mixed emotions between the parents add emphasis to the scene
and show the reader that the parents are not happy with the situation. The father yelling is included to
show that he was upset and that he was scared, and because the father felt this way the reader can
conclude that he was pressured into unwinding his son. While the father is yelling, Starkey s mother is
crying. Crying is very different from yelling, but when Starkey s mother cries it is another

The Death Of A Baby
The first cries of a baby echoed through the air. The cries were eager and joyous, as if the baby was
welcoming the world. The mother held the newborn baby and looked at her with pride that contrasted
her perspiring skin and shadowed eyes. Steady clicks were heard as a nurse came in. She was holding
a sleek glass tablet and briskly walked up to the side of the mother. The nurse projected a hologram of
numbers, graphs and tables with a triple tap on the glass.
The baby is in good condition: healthy heart rate, height at the seventy fifth percentile, head
circumference of 12 inches, Type O blood. There is one issue to contend with, but will only be an
issue in the far future. Do you want to hear it now? the nurse said professionally, ... Show more

and the couple digested the news.
We ll let her decide when she s old enough, the woman said. Making the decision for her would be
selfish and detrimental. She took a deep ragged breath, turning to her husband.
It would be. We could hope it may work out over time. Subjecting her to extensive tests for a cure
would only take away her childhood. Let s enjoy her while we can. the man said, gently rocking the
baby in his arms. What shall we name her? he asked, glancing back at his wife.
The woman laid back and closed her eyes, thinking hard. She did so for so long that the man thought
she had fallen asleep. As he began to pull up the hospital covers for her, she opened her eyes and said
Nova. For the cycle of destruction and creation within her. The woman smiled with satisfaction as she
looked at her husband and the sleeping baby.
Beautiful. I couldn t have thought of that. And her middle name? Must I decide that? the man said.

Forecasting Methods Compare and Contrast
Forecast in a simple terms is a prediction thru a statement or claim that a particular event will occur in
the future. It looks like to me that almost the majority of the people, including children, once in their
life time were a forecasters, as sometimes in their past they?ve tried to predict any future event. This
act of making such prediction is therefore, called forecasting. Forecasts are never finished, they are
needed continuously and as the time passes, their accuracy and their impact on actual performance are
meas So it looks like that forecast in itself, is not too complicated, it becomes complicated once the
word ?good? is attached to it. Thus, the forecast has to be well thought and planned so it can be called

Delta airline is one clear example as it is the latest one to make use of the chapter 11. The remaining
of this paper will be talking about the different forecasting methods used by the airline industry to
make future prediction of passenger demand. The exactness of forecasts is very critical to the revenue
management system as lousy prediction of demand can lead to an incorrect decision making, which in
turn leads to a miserable revenue performance. So the airline industry, more than any other industry,
needs an accurate forecasting not only because of the September 11 occurrence, but also due to a very
high price of crude oil, which tends to increase the price of kerosene highly used by the industry. One
study identified as the Improved Forecast Accuracy in Airline Revenue Management (2001, Richard
Zeni) shows that airlines divide passengers into two large categories based on their sensitivity to price
and travel needs. These included business passengers and leisure passengers. This study has further
shown that business travelers have a tendency to make their arrangements close to their departure date
staying at their destination for only a short time. However, they did not show much flexibility on their
plans at all, but they were willingly to pay more money for their tickets. On the other hand, exactly the
opposite happened with leisure travelers. They usually booked their flights well ahead of their travel
date; stayed more time

Pros And Cons Of E-Learning
E learning
E learning is a new field of learning based on technologies that emerged in last few decades. The
number of learners who use e learning is increasing and become larger than before. This article shows
an overview of e learning , pros , and cons of using it.
Definition of e learning e learning defined as learning utilizing electronic technologies to access
educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom (what is learning?, n.d ). Another definition
is is an umbrella term that describes education using electronic devices and digital media (E learning,
November, 5, 2015). The letter e refers to electronic , Luskin (2001) explains e as exciting, energetic,
emotional, and educational..
History of e learning
The term e learning has been used frequently since the development of internet in late of 20th century,
distance courses has been offered by educational institutions and academies for learners who want to
learn specific subjects and skills or for those who prefer e learning due to their real life circumstances.
In 1984, the first software MAC give people opportunity for individuals to have computers in their
homes and establish easier learning through online. Also, by the year of 2000 , many of companies
and institutions used e learning to train and improve their employees to gain basics to be suitable for
their jobs. Tools for successful e learning such as internet, computers , and laptops become widespread
around the world (Gogos,2014). Approaches of e learning
Synchronous learning
Learning and teaching process occurs at the same time, the trainer and learners interact with each
other and share the ideas, details, and solutions during the session while they are physically separated
from place shift . There are many examples of synchronous learning such as virtual classroom,
audio/video conferencing, online lectures, listening to a live radio broadcast, and two way live satellite
broadcast .( Yakaraju G ,2014)
Desynchronous learning
The main distinction between synchronous learning and this approach is that no interaction between
trainer and learners because learning and teaching process occurs in separated times (not at the same

Janice Mirikitani Suicide Note
The poem, Suicide Note by Janice Mirikitani is very similar to the song, Jumper by Third Eye Blind
but differentiates in many ways, also. These two pieces of work are very much similar in the way their
themes are expressed through the use of imagery and symbolism to help tell their story about suicide
and how it has affected them. The two pieces also differentiate when it comes to who is actually
narrating the story and the tone of voice being used. There is a lot of relationship between the themes
of the poem, Suicide Note and the song, Jumper . Both of these works seem to correlate with the
overall theme of suicide. The poem, Suicide Note , reflects on the tragedy of certain cultures where

Solipsism In The Fight Club
From the beginning of the Fight Club, Tyler s apparent purpose, in the forming of Fight Club and
Project Mayhem, was to bring the narrator to rock bottom in order to take him out of the unsatisfying
everydayness of his life. The narrator develops a form of solipsistic therapy that allows his own mind
to find a way to heal himself. In this way, he learns that in order to start over in life he needs let go of
all his physical possessions and begin again with nothing. Once he hits rock bottom, there would be
nowhere left to go but up. In addition, he initiates Project Mayhem in an attempt to create as much
chaos as possible in order to spread his therapy further. This type of therapeutic strategy is similar to
the methodology of crossfit training, which focus on specific areas of weakness in training. This
therapy employs a form of personal solipsism in order to confront the narrator s issues, because Tyler
knew that only he was able to control and understand his own conscience. The first step towards Tyler
s downward spiral in his life, which also led him to start joining therapy groups, was when the narrator
was denied any medication for his insomnia by a doctor. After the doctor refused to acknowledge his
suffering, Tyler realized that he would find no solace in asking for help, and he reacted to this by
relying on personal solipsism to help himself. The form of therapy that he develops, which would
initially establish the first Fight Club, was based around the theory that

Change is hard. At some point in time everyone has had to try to change a habit in order to improve at
something. That kind of change is hard because people get comfortable in their routines. That kind of
change is difficult because people have to act deliberately to avoid slipping into their old habits. That
kind of change is difficult because sometimes it begins to change the way people interact in other
elements of their lives. It is that kind of change that researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine would like
to see at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These researchers are calling on the
CDC to add medical errors to its annual list reporting the top causes of death in the United States.

The Four Types Of Operant Conditioning
Operant conditioning is a type of learning which occurs through either receiving reinforcement or
punishment for a behavior. This type of learning creates an association between a behavior and
consequence for that behavior. The four types of operant conditioning are positive reinforcement,
positive punishment, negative reinforcement, and negative punishment. If operant conditioning was
used properly it could be used to solve a variety of social and resource dilemmas; especially in the
case of the cattle ranchers and overgrazing.
Positive reinforcement is when a positive stimulus is added in hopes of increasing a behavior. This
could be that the ranchers are actually paid for not using the common land whose quality has begun to
deteriorate. By paying ranchers to use either their own land, or pay to use a different land, it would
give the common land pasture time to get in better condition. Also if you paid ranchers to only use
their own land, not only would the common land pasture increase in quality, but the rancher s land
would most likely stay in good condition because that land belongs to the racher. A huge problem with
the tragedy of the commons is that people abuse common resources because no one has ownership
over them; they are nonexcludable but rival, so everyone s use of those resources quickly depletes the
supply of it.
Negative reinforcement is when an aversive stimulus is taken away in order to increase behavior. If
the ranchers were already receiving annual

Symbolism In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
William Faulkner s classic short story, A Rose for Emily, is a Gothic Horror that discusses many of the
dark themes that characterized the Old South. Throughout the story, William Falkner uses the main
character of Emily Grierson to represent the death of the South after the Civil War. The most
significant theme in A Rose for Emily is death, which is symbolic of Emily s life and the life of the
Old South. After the defeat of the South in the Civil War, Emily s life is symbolically over as the days
of plantation life and Southern chivalry are all but over. This death is represented by Faulkner s
description of Emily s neighborhood, in which the narrator describes to us it was once an upper class
neighborhood has fallen into disrepair as the mansions are being replaced with cotton mills and
industrial sheds. It is because of this sudden change that Emily becomes enamored with death, which
is first depicted as when she resists giving up her dead father s body for burial. Another instance of
symbolism in A Rose for Emily is in the title itself. A rose is most often depicted as a symbol for love,
in which case Homer Barron is the rose for Emily. In the story, the narrator mentions that Emily s
father thought no man was good enough for or their family name, and she was never able to feel or

Essay On Thomas Paine s Common Sense
Thomas Henderson
Professor Phagan

Thomas Paine s Common Sense
Thomas Paine s Common Sense is a seminal piece of American literature and American history;
arguably it s the most important piece. Paine wrote Common Sense in 1775 1776, and it s theme was
to spread his political beliefs. He wanted American independence from the British monarchy. The
pamphlet was anonymously released on January 10th, 1776, and it explained to the reader why the
colonies needed to rebel against their British oppressors. It was sold far and wide across the colonies,
and it was successful; it inspired many of the soldiers during the initial summer of rebellion in 1776.
The whole idea of the pamphlet revolves around persuading the reader to side with the rebels in their
valiant fight for independence, and he absolutely uses contemporary persuasive techniques in his
writing. He uses facts about the present, he looks towards the future, and he uses religion to persuade
his readers. In fact, it s a testament to how the act of persuasion has been very similar over the last 238

He talks about how the colonists have really advanced while under British rule, and now they don t
really need them anymore. On top of that, he explains how Britain hasn t been very good to the
colonies; in fact they were oppressive and abusive in the years leading up to the release of the
pamphlet. This might be the most important argument he makes in Common Sense. He outlines the
reasons why the revolution has to start now. He tells the reader in plain English: this is bad, and we
need to do something about it. This is the ultimate form, of persuasion, from then until now. When you
explain to someone how bad their current situation is, many times they will try and do something
about it. Its a perfect way to begin a rebellion, and to persuade people that are on the

History Of Atlantic Canadian History And Its Impact On Our...
Since 1971, there has been some important and innovative changes in Atlantic Canadian
historiography that has made an impact on our world. One of the greatest landmark s in Atlantic
Canadian history, in my opinion, was the resurgence of treaties rights for the Mi gmaq and Maliseet
nation. Thus, my focus for this essay will be on Mi gmaq historiography in regards to fishing and
treaty rights in the maritimes. There have been three well known fishing disputes in Atlantic Canada,
ranging from the 1981 the Listuguj Raid, to the 1999 Supreme Court ruling concerning the Donald
Marshall Case, and a year later with the Burnt Church Crisis. All of these historic events are steps for
the Mi gmaq Nation to reclaiming their treaty rights. After over ... Show more content on

The Mi gmaq of Listuguj met with the government on several occasions to resolve this issue, and after
many meetings and careful planning we came up with our own law and regulations, and applied them
onto pieces of paper, instead of the oral traditions which we followed for thousands of years. These
requests to have our own laws and regulations have been granted to us because we had an inherited
right to fish salmon long before any federal and provincial governments after a great deal of
protesting. It was also finally recognized because it was in written word, this was the only form that
the governments would accept. However, today these challenges with oral traditions and court systems
are still a commonplace, but there are some successful steps towards the court recognizing and
affirming treaty and Indigenous rights. Some attest that these steps in trying to get the Canadian courts
to meaningfully recognize treaty and Indigenous rights is more than challenging, it is nearly
impossible in some cases because of the colonial governing structures of Canadian society.
Indigenous nations have always had their own ways governing their society. These ancient traditions
were passed down to the future generations, even making it through the forces of colonialism. By

Bedouin tribes were traditionally nomadic peoples of the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa who
migrated between the desert and cultivated land according to the season. It is this itinerant lifestyle
that equipped this group with a vast knowledge of survival skills and enabled their endurance in harsh
desert environments for centuries. Through the harvest of water and trade of goods and services in
exchange for food, water and currency, they were able to migrate across Europe and ultimately to

Application Of A Standardized Curriculum
In general, literature in education studies confirms that Rogers s model parsimoniously carries over to
research in school health: several researchers have conceptualized implementation within a diffusion
of innovation paradigm (Hausman Ruzek, 1995; Henderson Dancy, 2008; McCormick, Steckler,
McLeroy, 1995; Parcel et al., 1989; Payne, Gottfredson, and Gottfredson, 2006; Penberthy Millar,
2002). For example, Rogers s adoption invention continuum has been helpful to identify which
elements of a reform are modified and directly adopted. Henderson Dancy (2008) demonstrate that
new users often adapt and reinvent instructional tools to fit their needs, adding new characteristics that
distinguish it from its planned or intended use. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
13) and that professors pedagogical discontentment in their own classes was a far more important
factor when considering the adoption of something new (Southerland, Sowell, Blanchard Granger,
2011). Adopters will filter the information and advice they receive to consider, try, adopt and maintain
selectively that fits with their perceived needs, priorities and circumstances (Green, Ottoson, Garcia
Hiatt 2009). Thus, it will be important to investigate how teachers/instructors understand a reform and
what information effectively motivates them to make a change. The flow of innovation, however, can
be portrayed as top down, bottom up, with a reliance on extra organizational sources, learning, and
emulation processes. For example, Mintrom and Vergari (1998) present a theoretical argument for
integrating insights from policy network studies into diffusion studies, arguing the important role that
policy networks, and the policy entrepreneurs embedded in them, can play in the diffusion of policy
innovations. Through evidence on state level school choice policy entrepreneurs was collected through
a mail survey of education policy experts in each of the 48 contiguous states, they found that policy
networks serve to support the diffusion of policy innovations, external or interstate networks serve as
important mechanisms for the dissemination of innovative ideas. They also suggest that successful

Analysis Of Simon Critchley s Article Happy Like God
Happiness is a popular topic that is constantly being discussed by experts around the world. In the
article Happy Like God , written by Simon Critchley, Critchley proposes his view on happiness and its
inability to be measured or found through sources outside of ones self. In another piece written by
Richard Schoch, titled A Crtique of Positive Psychology , Schoch also discusses the topic through a
process of critiquing studies and experiments that claim to have the answer to happiness. Both of these
texts not only make claims that happiness cannot be measured, but they also bring questions to the
table that provide valuable insights on the wrong answers in order for us to find the right ones.

suggests that other pleasures in life can leave emptiness in ones soul that seeks fulfillment through the
process provided from being in solitaire. By dwelling on the past, and desiring the future, Critchley
believes that we aren t living in the moment, and by doing so we are cutting ourselves short of being
truly happy. In order to find moments where we are self content, Critchley believes that we must break

Ancient Egyptian Culture
Ancient Egypt was a fascinating and complex place. Luckily for historians, Egyptians had made great
strides in record keeping which have made studying their culture and society easier than some
previous historical eras. Ancient Egyptians were a people who were intensely religious, deeply divided
by gender roles and a strong hierarchy, and quite advanced for their period in terms of their
technological and economic innovations. Egyptians were deeply religious, and religion played a role
in nearly all aspects of their daily lives. When the ancient Egyptians experienced periods of peace and
prosperity, they attributed credit for the success to their deities (Slaughter, 5). The Egyptians
experienced centuries of remarkable stability and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The division of labor that arose based at first on survival needs created societal attitudes about the
roles, attributes, and abilities of men and women (Slaughter, 7). Men were the rulers and hard
laborers, while women were the family caretakers (Slaughter, 7). The fertility and sexuality of a
woman was her main contribution to Egyptian society, and these attributes were celebrated throughout
the culture (Slaughter, 7). Women were expected to marry at 12 or 13 years of age, and to bear
children often within the first year after marriage (Discussion, Ian Falconer). Although women were
usually not part of the religious or political ruling elite, they were highly respected for their fertility,
and were given most of the same legal rights as men (Discussion, Keako Crill). In some rare instances,
women actually did manage to rise to stations of power and privilege, sometimes as priestesses to a
God within the pharaoh s bureaucracy (Slaughter, 5), and in four instances, including the case of
Hatshepsut, women actually became the supreme rulers of the land (Slaughter, 6). Ancient Egyptians
achieved an impressive level of manufacturing and commercial capability for their time, which
allowed them to achieve great strength and geopolitical dominance. Egyptians took

A Case Manager At An Outpatient Clinic
Ms.C was a case manager at an outpatient clinic that provided a variety of services. One of her clients
was Ms. R, who was receiving services as a result of a recent divorce. Ms. C had also experienced a
divorce in her past and though she had effectively dealt with that experience, but found herself
identifying with many comments by Ms. R. Through their work together, the two women realized they
shared many common interests. They often found themselves talking about these shared interests in
their time together and eventually began meeting for coffee after their sessions. Ms. R soon suggested
they begin spending additional time together socially and Ms. C agreed. Before long, they became fast
friends, spending significant amount of social time together on evenings and weekends, visiting clubs,
going to movies or visiting local restaurants. After several months, the two had a falling out about a
gentleman both women favors. Ms. R filed a complaint with the Regulatory agency in her state about
the relationships. Throughout this paper this case will be analyzed including the harmful effects of the
relationship on all parties involved in the helping relationship, the social and emotional impacts of the
relationship, the effect on the treatment relationship, the likely outcome of Ms. R s complaint if filed
in New York State, and the strategies to minimize the likelihood of such a relationship arising. There

The Benefits Of Immigration
Immigration has long supported the growth and dynamism of the U.S. economy. Immigrants and
refugees are entrepreneurs, job creators, taxpayers, and consumers, says americanprogress.org.
Millions of immigrants make the challenging journey to the United States, for hopes of improving
their standard of life. Immigrants can be successful in moving to America if they learn proper English,
find a host family, and research becoming a United States citizen. By following these guidelines, the
immigration process will be smoother. It can also help reduce the chance of getting culture shock. An
important part of immigrating to America is learning the official language, English. An immigrant on
Voice of America News stated that she ...found it hard to communicate with people in America
because had (she) not studied English... If immigrants didn t know how to speak English when living
in America it could be hard for them to advance in their jobs. Reading and writing in English will be
helpful when advancing in the American economy. Learning how to speak and write English helps us
not only to survive, but to advance as well, said an immigrant in an article from The Denver Post. On
migrationpolocy.org it states, Fully 85 percent (of immigrants) say it is hard to get a good job or do
well in this country without learning English; only 12 percent say it is easy. It is vital to know English

Summary OfThe Merger Of Two Competing Hospitals
Healthcare Management Final Paper
In the short story The Merger of Two Competing Hospitals , we see both Porter Regional Medical
Center and Banner Regional Medical Center reach an agreement to form a merger. Both Hospitals had
at least one major current flaw and by teaming up they no longer had to worry about the aspect of
competing with each other. PRMC faced the problem of annually losing large sums of money. While
over at BRMC the problem laid within the infrastructure and not the problem of money.
After the completion of both hospitals coming together to form a newly named hospital, the question
of creating an executive team in charge of management comes about. In my opinion, before moving
forward in any way to create the executive team, candidates must be considered for their potential
leadership. Just imagine how hard it would be to fail if the newly created hospital looked for
leadership comparable to Arthur T. DeMoulas, when hiring for the executive team. While Market
Basket is not a hospital, the whole idea of the managers acting as leaders would be great for a new
hospital1. This could make all employees act loyal and show great customer service, and lastly having
all the customers (patients) come and leave happy.
According to MIT Sloan Management Review, there are six steps that should be taken to properly
rebuild a management team. The first includes Reducing Role Ambiguity. This is essentially
individuals who leave the new company because of the uncertainty the future holds for them. To help
this, the board should do its best to ensure the company will be fine to the new executive team, as well
as quickly remove any individuals who doubt the new company will be a success. Having just a few
individuals who doubt the potential of the merger could quickly ruin a whole team and bring moral
down. The second step states Due Diligence Around Talent Is a Dangerous Corner to Cut . To solve
this, the board needs to get to know all the managers on both sides of the merger and actually find out
about their full talent potential. The third part states Recognize Old Habits Die Hard But Not All
Should . Each company before the merger had a certain way of doing things, and while some of those
methods

their goals: increasing profits and reducing risks. If any wrong decision is made, it may cause a big
effect and the company is easily taken over by competitors. To overcome this, financial analysis is
necessary for enterprises to obtain a clear view on their current financial situations. Then, they are able
to develop a strategic plan in order to consolidate and strengthen in the future terms. Furthermore,
financial analysis supports basic information about financial health of the companies; not only the
strengths and weaknesses but also the potential situation of the companies. Thus, they help
shareholders, creditors and investors to make wise decisions in their investment activities. After

Stop And Frisk Report
Introduction In the 1990s, the growth of violent crime reached its all time high in New York City. In
response to the number of high murder rates in the 1990s, the New York City Police Department
realized that whatever they are doing to reduce violent crime was not working. The local news
reported that New Yorkers were afraid to wear their jewelry in public. Some reported they had to
sprint to the subway exit to avoid victimization when the door opened. The New York City Police
Department decided to implement a practice of Stop, Question, and Frisk. This practice became to
known as Stop and Frisk (Bellin, 2014). Stop and Frisk was a method in which an officer stops a

First, the reduction of violent crime has not provided correlation with the number of stops made.
Secondly, one of the purposes articulated was to reduce gun use, a data from 2008 to 2011 shows 27%
increase in stop and frisks and shootings had not gone down, the number of shooting actually rose.
Third, the stop and frisk policy was just another form of crime fighting tool implemented by the
NYPD and it is difficult to isolate the effectiveness of this policy. In other words, there was no benefit
of this policy. However, it cost community policing relations with minority to diminish due to how
law enforcement treated minorities during the implementation of stop and frisk. There are specific
recommendations that can be set forth to improve the stop and frisk. The first recommendation
involved (1) improving training of NYPDs officers as to the laws governing the policy to ensure that
the officers are in accordance with the law; (2) changing the current incentives from measuring the
number of stops to considering the results of the stops; (3) considering pilot program testing to use
audio or visual recording stop and frisks; and (4) establishing an oversight monitor to ensure the

control over distribution and free shipping transportation for most of its products. However, the
concept was changed and replaced with the backward vertical integration when Amazon s product
named Kindle was manufactured as eBook reader. The company made use of all the available
resources in an efficient way to benefit its financial performance (Frey Cook, 2004).
Amazon.com added a value to its name and fame by creating partnerships through joint alliances and

Similarities Between Stamp Act Congress Declaration Of...
The Stamp Act Congress Declaration of Rights and Grievances was a petition to the king and the two
houses of Parliament asking for colonial position in the government if they were to be taxed. The
Declaration of Independence is a statement from the colonial government wishing to cut ties with
England and to be their own governing force. Both were, in a sense, documents that asked of England
to change their ways of governing the colonies. While both articles are mostly different in how they
ask for that change, there are some similarities in them culturally; even though they are years apart.
First, both of the documents call out the militia based courts set in place by the king. The Stamp Act
Congress states in title VII, That trial by jury is the inherent and invaluable right of every British
subject in these colonies (p. 90) and one of the grievances on why the colonies wish to succeed from
England in the Declaration of Independence is For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial
by Jury (p A69). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

states That the only representatives of the people of these colonies are persons chosen therein by
themselves, and no taxes ever have been, or can be constitutionally imposed on them, but by their
respective legislatures (p. 90) and the Declaration of Independence states one of the reasons they had
made this specific document was For imposing Taxes on us without our consent (p A69). This shows
that even between the years both of these were written, the American colonies still believed in fighting
for taxation without representation. Lastly, both documents both state their angers for the Navigation

The War Of Canada During The Great War
At the end of the Great War, Canada plunged into economic darkness; the once powerful war industry
was no longer needed and factories shut down all over the country, causing unemployment for
civilians and veterans alike to skyrocket. This reflected on the military of Canada; vehicles that were
destroyed were not replaced; the number of permanent forces and militia barely grew. Canada s
military saw a period of inactivity that would even cause land, sea and air components merged as a
singular entity due to the Great Depression s effect on the military budget. However, the peace was not
to last. As Adolf Hitler s Germany appeared and showed the world its intentions, nations gathered and
Canada committed an important act demonstrating its independence as a nation; Canada declared war.
Viewed for a long time as a British colony even after Confederation, Canada took a stand against a
virtually universally recognized evil alongside the major powers of the world at the time. Canada s
participation in conflicts in many different operations throughout WWII demonstrated its military
effectiveness, but its important role in the D Day landings defined Canada s military competency
through the crucial Operation Overlord, dubbed by some as the beginning of the end of the Second
World War, in Normandy. Canada s role in Operation Overlord in Normandy solidified the military
structure that is our modern military and sculpted the image of an independent nation through Canada

The Importance Of The Professional And Transformation...
The professional and transformation model both have key elements that make them very different,
however both also relied on teamwork and strong leadership (Mclauglinc, 2014). The transformation
model is a concept that encourages the grow of organization by allowing employees to provide
feedback on projects without fear of negative repercussions. It encourages collaboration and provides
the opportunity for employees to assumed leadership roles at various levels or the organization
(Mclauglinc, 2014). The professional model is based on individual responsibility, rigid planning,
administrative authority.
Healthcare organizations are beginning to adopt the transformation process, but not all organizations
have applied the transformation at the same level. An example of this can be seen in nursing, in this
particular area nurses have become aware of implementing stronger communication between
providers and nursing staff this has increase patient safety (NBCI,
2004). New clinical safety measures have been applied to medication safety such as the use of the
Three Identifiers where nurses and doctors confirm the medications to be administer by following
stablish guidelines. Prior to administering a drug, the staff conducts callbacks out loud to ensure the
doctor, nurse and patient all are aware of the medication being administer (welch,

Not only is there internet, many companies also have intranet, which are a private information
network within the company. The mix of telecommunicating and intranet increase communication and
information knowledge between members of an organization to also increase productivity. Automation
is the automatically controlled operation of a process, system, or equipment by mechanical or
electronic devices. The two major reasons for automation is speed and better service. In some capital
equipment items, Canada takes six to twelve months to make, where Japan takes six to twelve weeks.
(Schwind, 2010, p. 10) This is a major challenge that Canada must face. The service factor is
continuous. A machine is programed to do the same exact operation over and over to ensure quality
and effectiveness, where as a human might make an error on one or more areas of the operation.
Another challenge with technology and automation is cost. Machines are expensive and not all
companies can afford the high tech equipment, and therefore must rely on manual labour.
Demographic challenges include the changes associated with the labour force, such as education
levels, age, and participation levels which occur slowly and are usually known in advance. The

that so has the way organizations are ran. In the past the men worked and the women stayed home and

Capitalism And Colonialism’S Links As Pillars Of White
Capitalism and colonialism s links as pillars of white supremacy contribute to the racial exclusion and
exploitation of certain racial groups, such as Native Americans and Black people. This can be seen
through the timeline of North American history, but also farther back in the history of European settler
colonialism throughout Europe and into other nearby continents. The methods of decolonization
employed by various racial groups affected by colonialism interact with one another in various ways,
as each group was affected differently, yet they were affected by the same instigating group of white
settlers. It is important when these groups make the move to decolonize themselves to consider other

Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz covers much of this in her book Indigenous People s History of the US, where
she goes over many historical events contributing to the genocide, exploitation, and exclusion of
Native Americans. In the beginnings of white colonial interaction with indigenous people, settlers
used native peoples as sources of knowledge on how to live off unfamiliar land:
They appropriated what had already been created by Indigenous civilizations. They stole already
cultivated farmland and the... crops domesticated over centuries, took control of the deer parks that
had been cleared and maintained by Indigenous communities, used existing roads and water routes in
order to move armies to conquer, and relied on captured Indigenous people to identify the locations of
water, oyster beds, and medicinal herbs (Dunbar Ortiz 46). Without Native Americans, Dunbar Ortiz
argues, the European settlers would likely have not survived in the New World at all, for had North
America been a wilderness, undeveloped, without roads, and uncultivated, it might still be so, for the
European colonists could not have survived (46). This is only the beginning of settler exploitation of
Native Americans, though, as settler colonialism later changes its stance of racialized logic to that of
exclusion, leading to mass genocide and appropriation of indigenous land. Once the

Marketing plans at PepsiCo
PepsiCo (n.d.) is a global food and beverage leader with a diverse product portfolio that includes 22
brands that each generates over $1 billion in revenue ( Global Brands , n.d.). While PepsiCo is second
only to Coca Cola in the production of CSD beverages, PepsiCo is the number one producer of snack
foods in the world (Hoovers, Inc., n.d). Pepsico has outgrown Coca Cola in terms of revenue over the
last five years (Cardenal, 2013, n.p.) because PepsiCo is able to leverage sales of its complementary
snack foods with CSD (De Kluyver Pearce, 2011).
However, PepsiCo s success is a result of leadership by its long standing CEO, Indra Nooyi and her

choices in color also reveal the chronological order of the film, and in that way two versions of the
story are conveyed. The black white part of the film runs chronologically forward, while the color
parts of the film run in reverse order. And both of these color choices, and the time lines they create, at
the end of the film, meet in the middle! That s something unique.
In Eternal Sunshine Joel is a character who wears dull, unexciting colors; so he blends in with large
crowds. He does not stand out at all. In contrast, Clementine s quirkiness is expressed by her colorful
clothing choices, and her changes in hair color. Clementine always stands out.
Clementine s hair color is also a symbolic display of her relationship with Joel, changing from green
to orange, to red, and then to blue. The color green symbolizes new life; Spring, fresh air, green plants,
growth and nature. This represents a fresh start, the beginning of their relationship.
The color red symbolizes their romantic passion. The color orange represents a weak, dying passion, a
dying of love. The color blue represents a mood of sadness

Thin Layer Chromatography ( Tlc )
Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a technique used to identify components within a compound and
determine the compounds purity. The purpose of this experiment is to determine what solvent works
the best at separating the different pigments of the paprika extract. The solvents used to develop the
plate are hexane and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), as well as three mixtures of the two solutions
(5% MTBE in hexane, 10% MTBE in hexane, and 30% MTBE in hexane). Hexane is a non polar
alkane that is used as a solvent for many different things and MTBE is a polar ether that is used as a
fuel additive. In this experiment, five TLC plates were set up and ran in each of the five prepared
solvents. There are four steps when performing TLC which include: spot (touch the capillary to the
plate briefly so the compound runs out and forms a small spot on the plate), develop (choose a solvent
to develop the plate, then place the slide in the developing chamber), visualize (when the solvent
reaches the stop line, remove and visualize the data), and calculate (measure the distance between the
spot and start line to calculate the Rf values). Rf= Distance traveled by spot Distance traveled by
solvent Procedure Extraction of carotenoids from paprika powder. First weigh out 0.5 g of paprika
powder and place it in a 50 mL beaker. Then add a magnetic stir bar to the beaker and 5 mL of methyl
tert butyl ether (MTBE), allowing it to stir for 5 10 minutes. Vacuum filter the solution

Essay Comparing My Last Duchess And The Laboratory
My Last Duchess also written by Robert Browning is similar to The Laboratory as both are written in
the form of dramatic monologues.
My Last Duchess tells the story of a Duke who is arranging with a servant plans to gain the hand of a
count s daughter in marriage. The Duke takes the servant upstairs into his private quarters and shows
him several possessions the first of which is a portrait of his last duchess. The Duke keeps this portrait
hidden behind a curtain that only he may draw. The Duchess was apparently easily pleased: she smiled
at everything, and seemed equally as impressed when given a branch of cherries as when the Duke
married her. She also blushed easily. The Duchess s behaviour threw the Duke into a jealous rage, and

He is selfish and and wants Porphyria to himself, he will not allow anyone else to have her and to
ensure this he kills her. This portrays Porphyria as his possession. The simplicity of the statement also
reflects the insanity of the speaker, to him killing Porphyria is a simplistic act.
The speaker discusses Porphyria s innocence, Fair, perfectly pure and good and the smiling little rosy
head this suggests that to him, Porphyria is pure and childlike. The alliteration draws attention to her
innocence and draws contrast to her previously seductive portrayal.
The speaker seems to want to possess Porphyria, so he reduces her to an object: a corpse, instead of an
independently thinking individual. Further evidence of the speaker s desire is demonstrated through
the repetition in that moment she was mine, mine . This emphasises the speaker s desire to keep her in
that perfect moment. The idea of Porphyria being the narrator s possession also suggests something
about the way in which he regards women.
The speaker s final line of the poem, And yet God has not said a word , suggests that he has got away
with Porphyria s murder. However this could also be interpreted as suggesting that men are superior to
women as God has not condemned him for killing

The Ethical Dilemmas Of Three Others Opinions For Smartphones
3 Others Opinions
(Rebecca Balebako, Abigail Marsh, Jialiu Lin, Jason I. H, Lor, 2014) they are mentioned in a research
done at Carnegie Mellon University, about some interesting findings that may raise a dilemma for
smartphone users who are mostly concerned about their privacy. The result of the survey conducted
from number of app developers says that only a few of them had formal privacy and security training.
When questioned about privacy policies implemented in their apps, one developer said, I haven t even
read our privacy policy. I mean, it s just legal stuff that s required, so I just put in there. This is the
reality of many apps we are using in our smartphones. If an app s privacy policy is there only for legal
purposes, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I totally agree with this statement, as unless an app developer has been properly educated about
privacy guidelines, we cannot totally expect them to follow the code of conducts related to it. Even
that is other authors concern and mine, still developers have the responsibility to develop their
professional knowledge according to the BCS code of conduct 2c and should only publish apps that
give importance to user s privacy. According to IEEE (Florian Pfarr, Thomas Buckel, Axel
Winkelmann, 2014), a specific problem with cloud computing is that countries like China and Iran,
which ignores human rights and deny the remedy, might have access to cloud servers with the intent
of surveillance of prosecution. In addition, cloud service providers in the USA are legally bound by
the patriot act to provide all customer data to the government of the US. The issue raised by these
authors affects smartphone users even without their knowledge as most of the current smartphones are
regularly, keeping backups in the cloud and apps like Google photos automatically upload the photos
to the cloud unless you change the settings otherwise. Even it is not relevant to their countries, above
mentioned governments violate The Data Protection Act 1998 (UK) which upholds a person s right to
protect his/her data from others. As many cloud computing services supports online editing of office
documents from any device, most businesspersons and students intend to use their smartphones or tabs

What Are The Vikings Pirates
The Vikings were seen as heathen pirates by those that experienced their attacks. Many people had
every reason to be frightened as their warships sailed from their homelands in Scandinavia. The
Vikings were actually several different peoples who lived in we now know as Norway, Sweden and
Denmark. Many people think of them today just as warlike raiders but some were farmers, merchants
and architects. Their artists and craftspeople produced beautiful objects. Many Vikings set off from
their homelands in search of new lands to settle and farm, such as Iceland. Other voyages were carried
out for plunder first, then for settlement. Norwegian Vikings began to settle in the islands off the
northern coast of Scotland at the beginning of the

Race, Class, And Gender
Many of the results from the interview varied not only based on race, class and gender, but also from
individual to individual. No matter what race or gender you are, a friend or family member different
from you can have the same opinions, or in this case, some of the same answers to general life
questions. I believe that these interview questions should not just be based on the race, class, and
gender, but also the individuals themselves. From these questions and answers, one can get a true
sense of a human being s personality. Through the questions that I asked, I believe that I was able to
gain an understanding of who the person was based on their answers and not just their race and
gender. When asked the question What in life do you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many other people that answered this question said that it was happiness that they valued the most.
One white female, one Hispanic female, and one Asian male, responded with happiness for this
question. Happiness can mean many different things to all people. One person may think happiness is
found in finding someone to love. While others might think that happiness is found when they finish
their education and find a job. Based on people s responses to, At this moment what would your life
objective be? someone may say that you can interpret the answer given of happiness by reading the
following answer and making the conclusion that their idea of happiness is the answer to the question.
For example, An Asian male that I interviewed answered, the first question, with happiness and then
the second question he answered, graduating college and getting a good job. The way in which I
interpreted this response is that this male will find or continue to be happy when he graduates from
college and finds a suitable job.
One answer to the life objective question that made me think and appreciate the answer was given by
an African American male. His answer to this question was

  • 3. Wohl s Theory Of Health And Social Care Wohl (1983) produced a well researched and documented account of public health and development in Britain; starting from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century. The author eloquently described the horrendous and devastating levels of the nations poverty and poor health. Within Victorian society few people were free from illness/disease, average lifespan, stench and impurified water. The shift in socioeconomic differences, intolerable living conditions and significantly poor working conditions took on an added dimension because of the increasing number of rural residents relocating to towns in order to seek employment. This urban revolution resulted in a major health crisis for the nation due to the rapid growths of towns ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To enhance wellbeing for every one of us and to decrease unfair and antiquated health inequalities, greater movement and activity is required from a social perspective. • 4. The Shallows Essay In today s era, we depend a lot on technology and the internet. For daily things such as school, work, communication, and so much more. There is controversy between eras due to if the internet is a positive or negative contribution. In the book, The Shallows: What the internet is doing to our brains, by Nicholas Carr, it speaks about how the internet is changing a huge aspect of our lives. From our thought process to our attention span. I believe that this generation and era, all together as a community, is obsessed with the internet. I support Carr s side of writing the book because of the amount of time and usage we sacrifice to the internet. We eventually learn to be so attached to this media and internet. Even if the phones, computers, or any form of tech is put away, we will find a new type of distraction. Another huge problem with media is, Changes in reading style will also bring changes in writing style, as authors and their publishers adapt to readers new habits and expectations. • 5. Historical And Environmental Aspects Of Theology Ecological theology focuses on the scientific and environmental aspects of theology. It tries to determine the proper relationship between nature and humans from a religious perspective. Throughout history, Christians have turned to the Bible for advice on almost every aspect of life, but only a select few have been asking questions about caring for the environment. The recent environmental crisis has caused an increase in interest for this type of theology over the past fifty years. Certain passages from the Bible calls Christians to love and care for each other and ultimately for the environment. Advocators for creation care have found verses in the Bible that suggest that God calls us to protect the Earth and serve as temporary stewards. Ecological theology seeks to find the answers to how Christians can remain true to God s will in a time of environmental destruction and what exactly is the Christian ecological responsibility. Throughout the old testament and the new testament there are a multitude of verses that relate directly to the role God calls christians to play regarding the environment. Some of the verses can be interpreted differently and the variety can lead to confusion about Gods true will. However, If Christians choose to look closely at the Bible they can find very specific sources that support the need to care for God s creation. • 7. Themes Of Unwholly Society An Unwholly Society The dystopian novel Unwholly, the second book in the Unwind series by Neal Shusterman, is a twisted story of a futuristic world where life is not valued in the same way as it is today. When government advertises and pays citizens to make bad choices, it makes the society corrupt and inhumane. One corrupt thing about this society is that parents can choose to Unwind their children. Unwinding is when parents can turn their kids over to the government and the government takes the children apart and uses their body parts for different purposes. A possible theme for Unwholly is that by following a corrupt society, people begin to develop selfish behavior. Neal Shusterman uses intense actions and exaggerated description to make his books unique and to help show the theme and help the reader picture the scene. One area of the book that shows Shusterman s craft is Starkey s goodbye scene. The book states Stop! yells their father, as their mother begins to cry (Shusterman 7). These mixed emotions between the parents add emphasis to the scene and show the reader that the parents are not happy with the situation. The father yelling is included to show that he was upset and that he was scared, and because the father felt this way the reader can conclude that he was pressured into unwinding his son. While the father is yelling, Starkey s mother is crying. Crying is very different from yelling, but when Starkey s mother cries it is another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was holding a sleek glass tablet and briskly walked up to the side of the mother. The nurse projected a hologram of numbers, graphs and tables with a triple tap on the glass. The baby is in good condition: healthy heart rate, height at the seventy fifth percentile, head circumference of 12 inches, Type O blood. We ll let her decide when she s old enough, the woman said. Making the decision for her would be selfish and detrimental. She took a deep ragged breath, turning to her husband. It would be. This act of making such prediction is therefore, called forecasting. Forecasts are never finished, they are needed continuously and as the time passes, their accuracy and their impact on actual performance are meas So it looks like that forecast in itself, is not too complicated, it becomes complicated once the word ?good? is attached to it. Delta airline is one clear example as it is the latest one to make use of the chapter 11. The remaining of this paper will be talking about the different forecasting methods used by the airline industry to make future prediction of passenger demand. The exactness of forecasts is very critical to the revenue management system as lousy prediction of demand can lead to an incorrect decision making, which in turn leads to a miserable revenue performance. So the airline industry, more than any other industry, needs an accurate forecasting not only because of the September 11 occurrence, but also due to a very high price of crude oil, which tends to increase the price of kerosene highly used by the industry. One study identified as the Improved Forecast Accuracy in Airline Revenue Management (2001, Richard Zeni) shows that airlines divide passengers into two large categories based on their sensitivity to price and travel needs. These included business passengers and leisure passengers. This study has further shown that business travelers have a tendency to make their arrangements close to their departure date staying at their destination for only a short time. However, they did not show much flexibility on their plans at all, but they were willingly to pay more money for their tickets. On the other hand, exactly the opposite happened with leisure travelers. They usually booked their flights well ahead of their travel date; stayed more time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Solipsism In The Fight Club From the beginning of the Fight Club, Tyler s apparent purpose, in the forming of Fight Club and Project Mayhem, was to bring the narrator to rock bottom in order to take him out of the unsatisfying everydayness of his life. The narrator develops a form of solipsistic therapy that allows his own mind to find a way to heal himself. In this way, he learns that in order to start over in life he needs let go of all his physical possessions and begin again with nothing. Once he hits rock bottom, there would be nowhere left to go but up. In addition, he initiates Project Mayhem in an attempt to create as much chaos as possible in order to spread his therapy further. This type of therapeutic strategy is similar to the methodology of crossfit training, which focus on specific areas of weakness in training. This therapy employs a form of personal solipsism in order to confront the narrator s issues, because Tyler knew that only he was able to control and understand his own conscience. The first step towards Tyler s downward spiral in his life, which also led him to start joining therapy groups, was when the narrator was denied any medication for his insomnia by a doctor. After the doctor refused to acknowledge his suffering, Tyler realized that he would find no solace in asking for help, and he reacted to this by relying on personal solipsism to help himself. The form of therapy that he develops, which would initially establish the first Fight Club, was based around the theory that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Four Types Of Operant Conditioning Operant conditioning is a type of learning which occurs through either receiving reinforcement or punishment for a behavior. This type of learning creates an association between a behavior and consequence for that behavior. The four types of operant conditioning are positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative reinforcement, and negative punishment. If operant conditioning was used properly it could be used to solve a variety of social and resource dilemmas; especially in the case of the cattle ranchers and overgrazing. Positive reinforcement is when a positive stimulus is added in hopes of increasing a behavior. This could be that the ranchers are actually paid for not using the common land whose quality has begun to deteriorate. By paying ranchers to use either their own land, or pay to use a different land, it would give the common land pasture time to get in better condition. Also if you paid ranchers to only use their own land, not only would the common land pasture increase in quality, but the rancher s land would most likely stay in good condition because that land belongs to the racher. A huge problem with the tragedy of the commons is that people abuse common resources because no one has ownership over them; they are nonexcludable but rival, so everyone s use of those resources quickly depletes the supply of it. Negative reinforcement is when an aversive stimulus is taken away in order to increase behavior. If the ranchers were already receiving annual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Symbolism In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily William Faulkner s classic short story, A Rose for Emily, is a Gothic Horror that discusses many of the dark themes that characterized the Old South. Throughout the story, William Falkner uses the main character of Emily Grierson to represent the death of the South after the Civil War. The most significant theme in A Rose for Emily is death, which is symbolic of Emily s life and the life of the Old South. After the defeat of the South in the Civil War, Emily s life is symbolically over as the days of plantation life and Southern chivalry are all but over. This death is represented by Faulkner s description of Emily s neighborhood, in which the narrator describes to us it was once an upper class neighborhood has fallen into disrepair as the mansions are being replaced with cotton mills and industrial sheds. It is because of this sudden change that Emily becomes enamored with death, which is first depicted as when she resists giving up her dead father s body for burial. Another instance of symbolism in A Rose for Emily is in the title itself. A rose is most often depicted as a symbol for love, in which case Homer Barron is the rose for Emily. In the story, the narrator mentions that Emily s father thought no man was good enough for or their family name, and she was never able to feel or experience love until she met ... • 18. Essay On Thomas Paine s Common Sense Thomas Henderson Professor Phagan October 1st, 2014 English 294 Thomas Paine s Common Sense Thomas Paine s Common Sense is a seminal piece of American literature and American history; arguably it s the most important piece. Paine wrote Common Sense in 1775 1776, and it s theme was to spread his political beliefs. He wanted American independence from the British monarchy. The pamphlet was anonymously released on January 10th, 1776, and it explained to the reader why the colonies needed to rebel against their British oppressors. It was sold far and wide across the colonies, and it was successful; it inspired many of the soldiers during the initial summer of rebellion in 1776. The whole idea of the pamphlet revolves around persuading the reader to side with the rebels in their valiant fight for independence, and he absolutely uses contemporary persuasive techniques in his writing. He uses facts about the present, he looks towards the future, and he uses religion to persuade his readers. This might be the most important argument he makes in Common Sense. He outlines the reasons why the revolution has to start now. He tells the reader in plain English: this is bad, and we need to do something about it. This is the ultimate form, of persuasion, from then until now. When you explain to someone how bad their current situation is, many times they will try and do something about it. Its a perfect way to begin a rebellion, and to persuade people that are on the ... Since 1971, there has been some important and innovative changes in Atlantic Canadian historiography that has made an impact on our world. One of the greatest landmark s in Atlantic Canadian history, in my opinion, was the resurgence of treaties rights for the Mi gmaq and Maliseet nation. Thus, my focus for this essay will be on Mi gmaq historiography in regards to fishing and treaty rights in the maritimes. There have been three well known fishing disputes in Atlantic Canada, ranging from the 1981 the Listuguj Raid, to the 1999 Supreme Court ruling concerning the Donald Marshall Case, and a year later with the Burnt Church Crisis. All of these historic events are steps for the Mi gmaq Nation to reclaiming their treaty rights. After over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Mi gmaq of Listuguj met with the government on several occasions to resolve this issue, and after many meetings and careful planning we came up with our own law and regulations, and applied them onto pieces of paper, instead of the oral traditions which we followed for thousands of years. These requests to have our own laws and regulations have been granted to us because we had an inherited right to fish salmon long before any federal and provincial governments after a great deal of protesting. It was also finally recognized because it was in written word, this was the only form that the governments would accept. However, today these challenges with oral traditions and court systems are still a commonplace, but there are some successful steps towards the court recognizing and affirming treaty and Indigenous rights. Some attest that these steps in trying to get the Canadian courts to meaningfully recognize treaty and Indigenous rights is more than challenging, it is nearly impossible in some cases because of the colonial governing structures of Canadian society. Indigenous nations have always had their own ways governing their society. These ancient traditions were passed down to the future generations, even making it through the forces of colonialism. Application Of A Standardized Curriculum In general, literature in education studies confirms that Rogers s model parsimoniously carries over to research in school health: several researchers have conceptualized implementation within a diffusion of innovation paradigm (Hausman Ruzek, 1995; Henderson Dancy, 2008; McCormick, Steckler, McLeroy, 1995; Parcel et al., 1989; Payne, Gottfredson, and Gottfredson, 2006; Penberthy Millar, 2002). For example, Rogers s adoption invention continuum has been helpful to identify which elements of a reform are modified and directly adopted. Adopters will filter the information and advice they receive to consider, try, adopt and maintain selectively that fits with their perceived needs, priorities and circumstances (Green, Ottoson, Garcia Hiatt 2009). Thus, it will be important to investigate how teachers/instructors understand a reform and what information effectively motivates them to make a change. The flow of innovation, however, can be portrayed as top down, bottom up, with a reliance on extra organizational sources, learning, and emulation processes. For example, Mintrom and Vergari (1998) present a theoretical argument for integrating insights from policy network studies into diffusion studies, arguing the important role that policy networks, and the policy entrepreneurs embedded in them, can play in the diffusion of policy innovations. Through evidence on state level school choice policy entrepreneurs was collected through a mail survey of education policy experts in each of the 48 contiguous states, they found that policy networks serve to support the diffusion of policy innovations, external or interstate networks serve as important mechanisms for the dissemination of innovative ideas. Luckily for historians, Egyptians had made great strides in record keeping which have made studying their culture and society easier than some previous historical eras. Ancient Egyptians were a people who were intensely religious, deeply divided by gender roles and a strong hierarchy, and quite advanced for their period in terms of their technological and economic innovations. Egyptians were deeply religious, and religion played a role in nearly all aspects of their daily lives. The division of labor that arose based at first on survival needs created societal attitudes about the roles, attributes, and abilities of men and women (Slaughter, 7). Men were the rulers and hard laborers, while women were the family caretakers (Slaughter, 7). The fertility and sexuality of a woman was her main contribution to Egyptian society, and these attributes were celebrated throughout the culture (Slaughter, 7). Women were expected to marry at 12 or 13 years of age, and to bear children often within the first year after marriage (Discussion, Ian Falconer). Although women were usually not part of the religious or political ruling elite, they were highly respected for their fertility, and were given most of the same legal rights as men (Discussion, Keako Crill). In some rare instances, women actually did manage to rise to stations of power and privilege, sometimes as priestesses to a God within the pharaoh s bureaucracy (Slaughter, 5), and in four instances, including the case of Hatshepsut, women actually became the supreme rulers of the land (Slaughter, 6). They often found themselves talking about these shared interests in their time together and eventually began meeting for coffee after their sessions. Ms. R soon suggested they begin spending additional time together socially and Ms. C agreed. Before long, they became fast friends, spending significant amount of social time together on evenings and weekends, visiting clubs, going to movies or visiting local restaurants. After several months, the two had a falling out about a gentleman both women favors. Ms. R filed a complaint with the Regulatory agency in her state about the relationships. • 28. Summary OfThe Merger Of Two Competing Hospitals Healthcare Management Final Paper In the short story The Merger of Two Competing Hospitals , we see both Porter Regional Medical Center and Banner Regional Medical Center reach an agreement to form a merger. Both Hospitals had at least one major current flaw and by teaming up they no longer had to worry about the aspect of competing with each other. PRMC faced the problem of annually losing large sums of money. While over at BRMC the problem laid within the infrastructure and not the problem of money. After the completion of both hospitals coming together to form a newly named hospital, the question of creating an executive team in charge of management comes about. In my opinion, before moving forward in any way to create the executive team, candidates must be considered for their potential leadership. Just imagine how hard it would be to fail if the newly created hospital looked for leadership comparable to Arthur T. DeMoulas, when hiring for the executive team. While Market Basket is not a hospital, the whole idea of the managers acting as leaders would be great for a new hospital1. This could make all employees act loyal and show great customer service, and lastly having all the customers (patients) come and leave happy. According to MIT Sloan Management Review, there are six steps that should be taken to properly rebuild a management team. The first includes Reducing Role Ambiguity. This is essentially individuals who leave the new company because of the uncertainty the future holds for them. To help this, the board should do its best to ensure the company will be fine to the new executive team, as well as quickly remove any individuals who doubt the new company will be a success. Having just a few individuals who doubt the potential of the merger could quickly ruin a whole team and bring moral down. The second step states Due Diligence Around Talent Is a Dangerous Corner to Cut . To solve this, the board needs to get to know all the managers on both sides of the merger and actually find out about their full talent potential. The third part states Recognize Old Habits Die Hard But Not All Should . Each company before the merger had a certain way of doing things, and while some of those methods ... • 43. Analysis Of The Film The Great Gatsby The role color plays I also appreciated the way colors are used in each film. The color symbolism is sometimes used similarly and sometimes used differently. In Memento, the film uses flashbacks of either color or black white scenes to illustrate the difference between current actions, and the previous events that build up or lead to those events or actions. These choices in color also reveal the chronological order of the film, and in that way two versions of the story are conveyed. The black white part of the film runs chronologically forward, while the color parts of the film run in reverse order. And both of these color choices, and the time lines they create, at the end of the film, meet in the middle! That s something unique. In Eternal Sunshine Joel is a character who wears dull, unexciting colors; so he blends in with large crowds. He does not stand out at all. In contrast, Clementine s quirkiness is expressed by her colorful clothing choices, and her changes in hair color. Clementine always stands out. The purpose of this experiment is to determine what solvent works the best at separating the different pigments of the paprika extract. The solvents used to develop the plate are hexane and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), as well as three mixtures of the two solutions (5% MTBE in hexane, 10% MTBE in hexane, and 30% MTBE in hexane). Hexane is a non polar alkane that is used as a solvent for many different things and MTBE is a polar ether that is used as a fuel additive. In this experiment, five TLC plates were set up and ran in each of the five prepared solvents. There are four steps when performing TLC which include: spot (touch the capillary to the plate briefly so the compound runs out and forms a small spot on the plate), develop (choose a solvent to develop the plate, then place the slide in the developing chamber), visualize (when the solvent reaches the stop line, remove and visualize the data), and calculate (measure the distance between the spot and start line to calculate the Rf values). Rf= Distance traveled by spot Distance traveled by solvent Procedure Extraction of carotenoids from paprika powder. First weigh out 0.5 g of paprika powder and place it in a 50 mL beaker. Then add a magnetic stir bar to the beaker and 5 mL of methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), allowing it to stir for 5 10 minutes. Vacuum filter the solution ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Essay Comparing My Last Duchess And The Laboratory My Last Duchess also written by Robert Browning is similar to The Laboratory as both are written in the form of dramatic monologues. My Last Duchess tells the story of a Duke who is arranging with a servant plans to gain the hand of a count s daughter in marriage. The Duke takes the servant upstairs into his private quarters and shows him several possessions the first of which is a portrait of his last duchess. The Duke keeps this portrait hidden behind a curtain that only he may draw. The Duchess was apparently easily pleased: she smiled at everything, and seemed equally as impressed when given a branch of cherries as when the Duke married her. She also blushed easily. The Duchess s behaviour threw the Duke into a jealous rage, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is selfish and and wants Porphyria to himself, he will not allow anyone else to have her and to ensure this he kills her. This portrays Porphyria as his possession. The simplicity of the statement also reflects the insanity of the speaker, to him killing Porphyria is a simplistic act. The speaker discusses Porphyria s innocence, Fair, perfectly pure and good and the smiling little rosy head this suggests that to him, Porphyria is pure and childlike. The alliteration draws attention to her innocence and draws contrast to her previously seductive portrayal. The speaker seems to want to possess Porphyria, so he reduces her to an object: a corpse, instead of an independently thinking individual. Further evidence of the speaker s desire is demonstrated through the repetition in that moment she was mine, mine . This emphasises the speaker s desire to keep her in that perfect moment. The idea of Porphyria being the narrator s possession also suggests something about the way in which he regards women. The speaker s final line of the poem, And yet God has not said a word , suggests that he has got away with Porphyria s murder. However this could also be interpreted as suggesting that men are superior to women as God has not condemned him for killing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Ethical Dilemmas Of Three Others Opinions For Smartphones 3 Others Opinions (Rebecca Balebako, Abigail Marsh, Jialiu Lin, Jason I. H, Lor, 2014) they are mentioned in a research done at Carnegie Mellon University, about some interesting findings that may raise a dilemma for smartphone users who are mostly concerned about their privacy. The result of the survey conducted from number of app developers says that only a few of them had formal privacy and security training. When questioned about privacy policies implemented in their apps, one developer said, I haven t even read our privacy policy. I mean, it s just legal stuff that s required, so I just put in there. This is the reality of many apps we are using in our smartphones. If an app s privacy policy is there only for legal purposes, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I totally agree with this statement, as unless an app developer has been properly educated about privacy guidelines, we cannot totally expect them to follow the code of conducts related to it. Even that is other authors concern and mine, still developers have the responsibility to develop their professional knowledge according to the BCS code of conduct 2c and should only publish apps that give importance to user s privacy. According to IEEE (Florian Pfarr, Thomas Buckel, Axel Winkelmann, 2014), a specific problem with cloud computing is that countries like China and Iran, which ignores human rights and deny the remedy, might have access to cloud servers with the intent of surveillance of prosecution. In addition, cloud service providers in the USA are legally bound by the patriot act to provide all customer data to the government of the US. The issue raised by these authors affects smartphone users even without their knowledge as most of the current smartphones are regularly, keeping backups in the cloud and apps like Google photos automatically upload the photos to the cloud unless you change the settings otherwise. Even it is not relevant to their countries, above mentioned governments violate The Data Protection Act 1998 (UK) which upholds a person s right to protect his/her data from others. As many cloud computing services supports online editing of office documents from any device, most businesspersons and students intend to use their smartphones or tabs to ... Many people had every reason to be frightened as their warships sailed from their homelands in Scandinavia.
