Why Geography Matters Blij
Why Geography Matters is a 282 page book, including the epilogue, written by Harm de Blij. It was
published in New york, New York in 2005. Over the Summer I read and finished this book. This book
is full of amazing facts and knowledge that pertain to , what geography is, how it effected past
societies, how it will affect future societies, and how geography is a crucial part in our society. In the
following summarization of Why Geography Matters , i will explain three main points that embody
what this book is about, and what it tries to teach. The first main point that I want to talk about is the
author giving the reader an insight on how the rth is always changing. He starts off by talking about
ways that show the change in Earth. Ome ways that he explains are thing such as maps and charts. He
then explains how the environment is constantly changing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first nation that he bring up is China. He talks about how China was thriving even though there
were many outside forces trying to bother them, all the while not being a part of the U.N. Then, he
talks about how only a few decades after devastating twin earthquakes, they had become, ... a nuclear
power, an economic heavyweight, a military juggernaut... and a political force... He continues on
talking about China and saying that with China s explosiveness into power, they have reached their
economical potential. Later on in the book however, he talks about Africa and how it may end up
declining, but could also end up rising. He talks about how Africa is ranked last in geographical areas
competing for American attention. He continues on talking about how Africa is affected by things
such as climate. But, there are also upsides that are happening for Africa such as less slavery and
globalization. He ends this section by saying, Africa s time and turn will come

Erectile Dysfunction History
History of ED Treatment Erectile dysfunction is one of the most serious diseases all the time. But
today, this disease has taken menacing proportions. The first mention of impotence In literature,
Thomas Hokkliva dated 1420 year first mentioned the word impotence in a poem. However, this term
had a slightly different meaning it can easily be replaced by the words powerless and helpless . In its
usual sense, the word is found in the book History of the Church in Britain dated 1655 year. There, the
Pope virility of the Pope was called into doubt. It is difficult to believe but one of the first mentions of
the word impotence was recorded in the Bible, where it had a clear reference to the sexual weakness
of King David. The theme of sexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such sentiments prevailed in the minds until the 19th century. In Russia, folk methods of treating
impotence were popular. One of the recipes advised men to smear the man parts with a mixture of deer
fat and chopped chicken hearts. In the late 19th century, scientific approach to the problem of sexual
disorders appeared. American William Hammond, in 1883, wrote his Sexual impotence in the male
and called early sex and masturbation the main reasons for ED. The scientist suggested the young men
to refuse sex life up to 21 years, and limit the number of sexual acts to three a month. As the ED
treatment, William Hammond suggested the abstention for a year. At the same time, moxibustion
therapy with nettles and electrical stimulation were developed. In the 20th century, the struggle against
male impotence became more efficient. Masturbation was justified, and doctors divided the causes of
ED into psychological and physical. An enormous role was given to the background diseases that
provoke impotence. The medicine made a huge step forward. There was a set of effective methods of
treatment, which gave positive results in 95 % of cases, and the men returned to the joy of sexual life.
For the treatment of psychological ED, hypnosis was actively used in 60s. Since 1982, doctors
prescribed a special injection into the penis. Since 1985, vasodilators came to the rescue. At the
beginning of the century, men got grafts in the

Desktop Research Paper
Violet Batchelor I believe that one of the most interesting and widely used and seen human computer
interface devices is the desktop. Being only 20 years old, I have never personally owned a computer
that did not have some kind of desktop. I had never thought to delve into why it was called the desktop
until we discussed this in class. A computer s desktop is the place where the user can organize
shortcuts to their different activites. Some examples are a link to an internet page, a shortcut to
Microsoft Office, or a shortcut to My Computer in the file explorer. The desktop was invented along
with the GUI (graphical user interface) and so I personally put it under the category of the granddaddy
of computer interfaces. If you use a modern computer, you use a desktop. When you start up your
machine, whatever operating system it is, the first thing you will see (once the computer has finished
booting) is your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You can learn a lot about someone by how their desktop looks and what s in it. A writer would
probably have hundreds of shortcuts to their unfinished screenplays, while a programmer may also
have 100s of shortcuts, but to different coding projects. The desktop also, as users before the desktop
know, makes using a computer much faster and easier. Instead of having to search (possibly through
command line) for something you may possibly do everyday, you can make a shortcut to it (and in
some cases, your computer will make one for you) and just click it. I can almost hear the AHA!
moment of we ll call it a desktop! I imagine, especially in the beginning, that the name desktop was
the best fit for this interface. A programmer looked around their desk, thinking what will we call this
great new interface? and they saw their files and papers surrounding them and came to the logical
conclusion that that interface full of their documents and files looked just like their desk in front of

The Factors Associated With Youth Homelessness And Arrest,...
Poverty has long been a consistent characteristic in crime. Numerous theories like Social
Disorganization, Labeling Theory, and Strain Theory have been created to try to explain the
connection between poverty and crime. As these theories demonstrate , the devastating external factors
that poverty causes contribute to crime. Yet, the connection between poverty and crime continues to
deliver new data, adding to the way criminologist analyze crime. These studies develop new methods
including governmental programs , investments in certain areas or change in tax codes for tackling
poverty emerge. Therefore, it is pivotal to continue studying the connection between poverty and
crime to properly a large of factor of crime from its roots.
The article Exploring the Factors Associated With Youth Homelessness and Arrest, by Kim Fielding
and Cheryl Forchuk discusses the homeless epidemic found throughout Canada. It is estimated that
around 150,000 Canadians are homeless, with around one third of those being juveniles. The article
focuses on juveniles because of their fragile age and their lack of stable environment makes them
prone to commit crimes in order to obtain basic necessities. The study includes interviews, surveys,
and demographics to characterize the homeless participants in order to provide an understanding of
their homeless situation.
Likewise, Valentina Nikulina, Cathy Spatz Widom, and Sally Czaja discuss the effects of neglect and

Special Education Teacher For Extended School Year
What is it like to be a Special Education Teacher for Extended School Year? I learned during my field
observation that being a special education teacher for Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) opens
the door to many opportunities, one of which is the availability to work as a teacher for Extended
School Year (ESY). I also learned in order for students to be eligible for ESY services, they must have
an IEP, be in a self contained classroom during the regular school year, and have data to support
significant growth/gains made on their individual goals and objectives. In addition, the student has
displayed regression when returning from a break. There are limited sites for ESY at the elementary
level, as a result ESY is a competitive data based program for both students and teachers. The site I
visited was Chattahoochee Elementary School in Duluth, Ga, there I had the opportunity to shadow a
teacher in the Moderate/ASD program. Chattahoochee ES is an older, red brick building with a newer
addition added to the top of the school. The wing where ESY is held was part of the new addition. It
had tile floors, an exterior office, and six classrooms. Two of the six rooms are used as alert and
calming areas, within these rooms there was adapted equipment, like a squeeze machine, listening
station, and a trampoline. The classroom was divided into sections/areas, using gray partitions and
study carols. Within these sections was a play area, individual task area, and reading area. There

I ve been excited about this class since I first saw it was being offered. I thought this class would be
easy because I have written my whole life and have taken two creative writing classes in the past. Yet,
this class definitely challenged me, as I have never been limited to writing about one topic (e.g. the

Presence In Okinawa
When examining this issue through an economic lens, one can see that there are many negative
implications of the U.S. maintaining a military presence in Okinawa. The article, Okinawa: Effects of
Long term U.S. Military Presence, by Genuine Security, reveals that Japan pays for 70 percent of the
total funding towards U.S. bases, leading to the sum of an estimated $100,000 contribution by the
Japanese government to each U.S. military person stationed in Japan ( Okinawa: Effects of long term
US Military Presence , 2007). This mass contribution is a drain to the Japanese economy. In addition,

base removal in Okinawa may not be feasible, a plausible solution to this conundrum is for the U.S. to
partially remove their presence from Okinawa. Japan would still have some military protection, but
would not suffer the economic strains posed by the current level of U.S. military presence. A primary
concern of this solution is that the U.S. would lack a presence in the Asian Pacific region. To address
this concern, the U.S. army could relocate their army to Guam. Guam is a U.S. territory, unlike
Okinawa which belongs to Japan. An argument against this solution is that the U.S. would have to pay
extreme amounts to rebuild bases and support their armed forces in Guam. The Russian International
Television Network article, Guam, Marianas brace for massive U.S/ military redeployment, asserts,
More than a third of the estimated $8.7 billion cost of building the new facilities for the Marines is
being funded by Japan, according to McClatchy reporter Adam Ashton ( Guam, Marianas Brace for
Massive U.S. Military Redeployment , 2015). This would relieve the financial strain placed upon the
U.S. in their relocation to Guam. If the U.S. military bases are not at least partially withdrawn from
Okinawa, Japan, the U.S., and their global partners will continue to experience the catastrophic
economic effects of this

Museum Fine Art Houston Exhibition Analysis
Contingent Beauty at the Museum Fine Art Houston was an exhibition that brought together a
selection of major works on view from the Latin American Collection. Featuring 21 artists who have
made significant contributions to the global art scene within the past 30 years over the topic what is
beauty. The exhibition was large scale survey of work from artists with heritage from Argentina,
Colombia, México, Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil among many other places and intertwined aesthetic
refinement and brutality of political and social realities of Latin America. Curated by Mari Carmen
Ramirez one of the top Latin American Curators the exhibition features both curatorial and theoretical
strategies to construct an argument that ask the audience to think about the idea of what beauty is or
isn t using a Latin American perspective.
Throught the exhibition viewers are presented with works that are pleasurable to the senses,
informative of political and social situations, seductive and raw. The end result is an exhibition that
takes the everyday and uses that perspective to examine material, subject matter, space in the form of
social change. One thing I liked about the project was the use of visual art and diverse artistic
processes as a way of offering different definitions and functions of beauty and aesthetics. This
exhibition is an important survey of Latin American voices representing different topics and stories.

How and why does it work? Be clear and specific.
Answer: Distillation is a method for separating a liquid from a solid or from another liquid in which
the liquid is boiled off and then recondensed (Yee, n.d., Distilliation). It works because the substance
you are looking to distill is boiled off recondensed and separated. It can be used to purify liquids from
solids or from other liquids (Yee, n.d., Distillation).
(b) (2 pts) Describe the apparatus and setup for a distillation. Include all components.
Answer: The distillation apparatus consists of a round bottom flask connected through an adapter to a
condenser, which is connected through another adapter to a second round bottom flask (Yee, n.d.,
Distillation). There is a thermometer connected through the thermometer adapter at the top (Yee, n.d.,
Distillation). There is also a vacuum adapter and a heating mantle. The heating mantle is a coil which
heats through electrical resistance (Yee, n.d., Distillation). You use cold water and make sure that it
goes in through the bottom and out through the top (Yee, n.d., Distillation).
(c) (2 pts) Imagine that you wanted to perform a distillation at your own home (remember, distillation
as a technique is not illegal it is only illegal if you use it to produce alcohol), but you did not have the
fancy lab equipment that you saw in the video. How could you do it? How could you improvise in

Babylon Revisited Thesis
Throughout the time period in which the moderns were coming of age and were bearing the weight of
responsibility from the world around them there were many authors that came forth. One such author
was F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was probably one of the greatest American authors of the twentieth
century. One of his many stories that was of interest within class was Babylon Revisited . Within the
story it goes over the life of a man who has recently come off of being a drunk and is in the midst of
attempting to get his daughter back. He had made the mistake of locking his wife out after a fight
between the two in a bar, and now that she is dead he is blamed for that. His daughter is stuck with her
aunt and now that he is no longer the man he once was he believes he should have his daughter back
and be given another chance. However, it is not the daughter he must convince, rather, he must

being exposed to the cold night air for an elongated period of time since they had gotten into a fight

locking her out, she also paid for all the drinks that he had taken in a way. An innocent girl was

Music Theory As A Worship Leader
There are many ways to incorporate music theory as a worship leader and as a worship team. As a
leader, there are very significant benefits to having a strong understanding of music theory including a
greater ability to communicate to the team members according to their understanding, a better
understanding of what you want from the band technically, and a greater proficiency in music which
allows you to connect better with stronger musicians and train up weaker ones. As a worship team,
integrating music theory comes with its own benefits and challenges. All worship bands need some
level of music theory in order to function at any level of efficiency. So the contrast made here will
between those who use very little music theory, such as those who have chord charts provided and
nothing else, and those who may rely completely off of sheet music. Of course in this issue, as it is
with many issues, it is a matter of balance and there is a sweet spot in between these two views. Many
worship leaders learned how to play guitar or piano just well enough to play and sing at the same time
before being pushed out to lead worship. That s my story. As soon as I could strum chords and sort of
sing at the same time, I started to lead for the high school group at my church. I knew very little about
theory, although I knew some from my time learning piano as a child and playing clarinet for a year. I
usually played alone or with another singer or cajonist. I didn t know harmony

Developing Your Professional Identity Is Good For Any...
Developing your Professional Identity
An effective professional identity is good for any profession, especially a counseling profession.
When a person develops a professional identity it says who they are and what they stand for in that
profession. It also says they know about that profession and could tell another anything they would
like to know about that profession. When a person knows about there profession they can answer any
questions they have about that profession.
In this paper the author will discuss the difference between two of the specializations of the counseling
discipline. Then this paper will discuss how to use the terms wellness, resilience, and prevention in a
counseling discipline. In this paper the author will discuss how the licensure plays a role in being a
counselor. This paper will also discuss the issues of, how certain associations can help ones
professional identity, how to continue the professional development of counselors, and how
technology can play an impact on the counseling profession.
Differences in Two Counseling Specializations The first specialization this author would like to
discuss is mental health counseling (MHC). MHC is a specialization that stresses: developmental,
preventive, and educational as well as remedial aspects of mental health care (Smith Robinson, 1995,
p. 158). Some also consider this profession a hybrid and it has an uncomfortable connection between
the professions of psychology and educational counseling.

Non Fatal Violence In The Workplace
Unfortunately, workplace violence is all too familiar for most these days. Most think of violence as
some sort of physical altercation. However, it s not only physical, but includes threatening and
endangering behavior towards one, or a group of employees. In fact, you may be surprised by some of
the actions that are included in workplace violence. Some that you may not think of, but they include
and are not limited to: harassment, intimidation, extortion and threats. Obviously, things like assault,
kidnapping, homicide, etc... Nearly two million people are involved or victims of workplace violence
every year. In the United States, violence is measured with fatal and non fatal statistics. Violence has

A joint effort in to combat this can go a long way in helping to prevent workplace violence. At the end
of the day it is in the employers best interest to have a workplace that is conducive to a productive
work environment in order to get the most out of all their employees. It is also important that all
employees feel safe and as if they can go and do their job in a positive environment, because an
employee that doesn t feel safe at work is not going to be a productive one.
In the end, employers need to make employees aware that there is a zero tolerance and that any
violation will result in immediate action. Along with this, employers should also educate and work
with employees to let them know that everything that can be done to keep a positive work

Gustav Klimt Research Paper
Gustav Klimt was one of the most decorative and erotic painters in the 19th century with having
worked iconic paintings such as The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer. He was against the
traditional culture of art which was being anti decorative and erotic. Klimt was born in 1862 in Vienna
Austria. His father Ernest was a immigrant from Bohemia to Austria and was coping to engrave gold
while his mother Anna was talented in the field of music but was never to put a vision to her dreams to
become a musician. (Bio.com) Klimt was so talented at the early age, that his school sent him to
another school which was the Vienna School of Arts and Craft on a full scholarship at the age of 14
even though he was raised in poverty. While he was in the art school, he was mostly focused on
architectural painting as he wanted to become a drawing instructor as his first career choice of a artist

Barbara Welter s View Of American Culture
There are several approaches in analyzing American life, past or present. Research is the way to find
what America thought its culture should be. American studies scholars took several theories to
articulate their own research in the field. Historians looking back at the country s history found
oppression and misrepresentations of a culture that was ever evolving. There were beliefs that the old
customs should stay alive. In addition, history provided a view of America that wasn t all that ideal. As
different as each historian s research was, the mode by which they studied America was also different.
Those vehicles of examination were as basic as the writings of the period of entertainment that
enthralled a society. Barbara Welter used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her inquiries addressed the omission of great female writers from the criterion of exceptional
literature. Her mode was via undermining the logic in literary critics or the method of deconstruction.
Baym employed three justifications in her theory: simple bias, gender, and gender related restrictions
(Baym 217). Baym s premises is that the literary critic, has chosen his authors on the basis of their
conformity to his idea of what is truly American (Baym 218). The critics are already bias to the writer
due to their version of culture and events that matter in American society. Within the writings of
Lionel Trilling, who criticized even Vernon Parrington of not having a true testimony of what America
culture is, to F.O. Matthiessen who doted on writers that had a devotion to the possibilities of
democracy (qtd Baym 218), females writers did not have a sense of the true American experience.
Women s literature were melodramas that only has to do with daily life and per Baym, the matter of
American experience is inherently male (Baym 222). Additionally, women could hardly speak of the
country s ideals when it was men that were the one s that were molding this society. Of course women
s literature was unlike their male counterparts, they were speaking from their own understanding.

The Key Aspects Of Mechanics Essay
These tricks that the top level athletes perform all relate to the laws of physics, every trick has
components of mechanics whether it be performed in a half pipe or just straight off the ground. The
key aspects of mechanics that are essential for these tricks performed in a half pipe include Torque,
Momentum, Centripetal force, Velocity, Acceleration; they also need to follow the laws of projectile
motion, conservation of energy. All of these play a role in helping the top athletes perform tricks and
giving them the ability to rotate in the air at will and land safely.
The law of motion is Newton s first law of physics that relates to inertia. This law state that an object
will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (rotating, moving straight) unless
acted upon by external forces. This and the law, conservation of momentum, explain how the rotation
occurs in the air. If you re rotating, you ll keep rotating unless a twisting force, or torque, acts to stop
you. In other words if you re not rotating, you can t rotate unless a torque starts you rotating. Both of
these apply to when snowboarders and skateboarders are in the air doing tricks. In relation to athletes
it means that they will stay rotating and moving in an upward direction if it weren t for external forces
such as gravity which helps decelerate them at 9.8ms 2 until they reach a final velocity of 0ms 1 and
other external forces such as air resistance/friction that help slow down the

The Merchant Of Venice Character Analysis
In The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare examines attractive qualities in a royal suitor
through the casket test designed by Portia s late father. Each suitor s choice represents his perception
of himself, Portia, and marriage, therefore can be anticipated by his words and actions prior to and
during the test. The presence and expression of bravado among the men functions as the most
indicative characteristic of the men s choices, as a man s portrayal of himself can tell a great deal
about his views towards women and relationships. This foreshadowing is accomplished through their
boastful diction, willingness to risk, and reactions to the caskets. As the three caskets each represent a
different viewpoint, the three men also represent three distinct personality types, thus different
expressions of confidence which the reader is able to detect through the suitor s words and actions as

Dinosaurs Are The Endotherms-Birds
The reading and lecture, both are discussing that the dinosaurs are the endotherms animals which keep
their body temperature constant. The author of the reading passage believes that the dinosaurs are the
endotherms; whereas, the lecturer does not agree with the author. She puts forth three aspects, each of
which has dismissed the reading assertions. To begin with, the author of the reading asserts that the
finding of the dinosaurs fossils in the polar region are convincing. The author believes that the animals
require to maintain the temperature higher than the surrounding temperature to live in the low
temperature area . This point is directly challenged in the lecture. The speaker posits that the

The way Tim Winton wrote was excellent and clever in the way he describes an uncomfortable
surrounding but finds the good in it Although the way Tim Winton writes is very juxtaposition
allowing you to reflect on the scenario, a good example of this is small mercies page 70 where Tim
describes the swimming centre and how it was damp and he felt a soupy chlorine feel , once he started
swimming he describes the air of every breath tasting of sheep urine but then he goes on to talk about
the thing he enjoyed most, that was the wind driven rain landing on his back . The text describes an
unpleasant experience but at the end he describes a pleasant yet satisfying breeze of wind landing on

Tim Winton does this many times throughout his stories some good examples in small mercies is
when Tim Winton writes about the Keenan s as the salt of the earth meaning they are simple and good
people, the term originated from Jesus Christ when he spoke to his followers saying ye are the salt of
the earth , another use of a simile in Tim Winton small mercies is when he describes the Keenan house
smelling like old people this is a simile because Tim Winton was comparing the odour of there house
to old people. Tim Winton also says that the Keenan s wood stove oven is the Rolls Royce of the
ranges this is a simile because he compares there oven to a high end car. In damaged goods Tim uses
simile throughout the book one example of this is when he is talking about when strawberry Alison
came to town and how she was a beauty but she was damaged goods because of her large birthmark

King And Douglass Similarities
Have you ever heard of the speech I Have a Dream from the late Martin Luther King Jr.?
You d be pretty sure many people have heard of it, but has anyone ever really read it and thought
about it? This could be like The Hypocrisy of American Slavery, a piece of work produced by
Frederick Douglass. They both argued that African Americans have a natural right to equality (Renfro
1). Douglass once said, The white man s happiness cannot be purchased by the black man s misery.
Here is just another point of there not being enough equality for being an African American during
those times of struggle. The fact that King and Douglass had used their oral power to try and fight

They came to be very influential people for the people of their time and for many years up to now.
King and Douglass also had their staple in time for being great Civil Rights activists. They played key
parts in the fight to lead blacks from their lack of power and equality for themselves. Having the
struggles to deal with within slavery and segregated times, blacks wanted to band together. King was
vital in the making of acts during those times, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ( Martin Luther
King Jr. 2). This act was what outlawed most of the discrimination for colored people. Douglass had
his own contributions, but they were in some cases not as major as the things King put forward to gain
equality for blacks. As time went on the two began earning their unparalleled oratory skills. With the
power of just their voices and hands they were granted with so much more notoriety. Both of them
have similar oratory styles. They both had the amazing ability to move their audience to action
(Renfro 1). They were also publishers and produced many great pieces of work. Douglass published
three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime, revising and expanding on his work each time.
My Bondage and My Freedom appeared in 1855. In 1881, Douglass published Life and Times of
Frederick Douglass, which he revised in 1892 ( Frederick

As I stated earlier the Namesake focuses mainly on the upcoming of Gogol Ganguli. However, the
story changes hands and is told from multiple peoples point of view as the book continues. The main
people who narrate the story are Gogol, Mrs. Ganguli, Mr. Ganguli, and Moushumi. The book which
covers a significant time gap or about thirty years starts off with Mrs. Ganguli pregnant with Gogol.
Gogol was names so after the Russian author Nikolai Gogol. He is named so because his father

A Reflection On The Educator
1. It is important to have frequent interactions with children as this enables them to know us and vice
versa. When we get to know them it is easier for us to know about their likes and dislikes, their
interests, preferences and this helps us to organise activities for them. It is important to have caring
and respectful interactions as when the children feel that the educator care for them they will feel safe
and will be able to trust the educator. The trust will bring confidence in the child. When the educator
respects the children the children will respect the educator in return.
A way that the educator can promote these interactions is when talking to the child, be at their level,
talking using a friendly tone.
To show that we care we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Use gesture while talking to them so they understand better and learn easier. If we can talk the
language from their background we try to.
3. It is important to communicate sensitively and positively with children as communication is a vital
part of developing and maintaining positive relationships in children so if we do not communicate
sensitively and positively that s affect the children and on his turn he will not communicate correctly.
Also we educators with the parents are the people who communicate more often with the children so it
is important to communicate sensitively as this will build trust. Also we are model for children so if
we do not communicate sensitively and positively, they won t either. According to the EYLF
communication is crucial to belonging, being and becoming, communication will help the child to
develop his sense of identity, his sense of purpose that why it is important to communicate sensitively
and positively.
When communicating with children we should show that we are listening to them, we should show
our feelings, make them feel that we care. When talking to a child we should try putting all our
attention on them not talking to someone else at the same time. When a child come to talk to us we
should not make him stay quiet and if we see he has some difficulty we should not make of him. We

Gerard David Virgin And Child With Four Angels
Gerard David created his oil on wood painting Virgin and Child with Four Angels from 1510 to 1515
in Bruges, Netherlands. The piece is currently located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
City and is found in Gallery 640 as part of the museum s collection of European paintings. Just as the
title indicates, the painting s subject is the Blessed Virgin Mary holding her infant son Jesus Christ, the
prophesied Messiah of the Old Testament, while being crowned by angels. Through the use of formal
artistic techniques, David conveys the miraculous and perfect nature of the Mary, stressing her
importance as the Mother of God and the Queen of Heaven in a realistic and relatable manner.
Throughout the Virgin and Child with Four Angels, David employs the use of color to emphasize the
miraculous nature of the religious subject matter. From the ornate jewels of the crown to the ruby red
color of Mary s gown to the amethyst purple sash of the angel in the upper right, the application of
rich jewel tones induces a sense of royal holiness to figures. Their brightness and warmth successfully
draw the viewer s attention to figures possessing them and generate an atmospheric serenity to the
scene. Additionally, the subtle flushness of the figures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the top of the work, the angels are holding a crown, which is typically perceived as a symbol of
royalty, honor and/or glory. Hence, this symbol represents the glory of Mary as Queen of Heaven and
as the virgin Mother of God, which can be seen as worthy of both honor and praise. Another symbol is
in the middle ground of the piece, where a monk is praying in the field by the stone wall. In
Christianity, monks live solemn lives of prayer and service, completely devoted to spreading the Word
of God in the Christian Gospel. Therefore, the monk s presence creates a sense piety and holiness in
the scene, which lends well to the religious

Message from the President Difficult Decisions at Harvard Losing a collegiate chapter of Kappa
Kappa Gamma is always heartbreaking. But when a well functioning, high performing chapter must

The temporary suspension of chapter operations of our Eta Theta Chapter, Harvard, has become a
cautionary tale about the ramifications of misplaced blame and arbitrary sanctions. In response to a

The Great Expansion Of The 20th Century Essay
By the turn of the 20th century, both agricultural interests and large urban cities like San Francisco and
Los Angeles needed more water for its rapid growth. In all this great expansion of aqueducts and
dams, concerned citizens like John Muir proclaimed that more must be done to protect the majesty and
beauty of California before it is all gone. Inspired by the writing of Henry David Thoreau, which
published Walden, a landmark book on the topic of environmentalism, and his years exploring and
camping in the Sierra Nevada wilderness, Muir began to gather like minded scientists and thinkers in
San Francisco. Efforts by Muir and the formation of his Sierra Club in the 1890s eventually met with
success in convincing the federal government to protect the Yosemite Valley from logging and grazing
interests, preserving the area into a newly formed forest reserve concept of a national park (Fox, p.
106). Muir had less success in preserving the sister valley of Hetch Hetchy, which eventually was
dammed and flooded to use as a reservoir for the inhabitants of San Francisco.
Up till the 1950s, environmental activism was fractured among diverse groups with diverse causes:
water quality, overpopulation, air quality, clean beaches, toxic wastes, pesticides, endangered wildlife.
Yet, in 1950, the Sierra Club, led by native Californian David Bower, eventually secured its national
reputation in the battle against another massive dam proposal, this time the Echo Park Dam project in
Utah.

Peaceful Resistance Thesis
Peaceful resistance is a very controversial issue in this day in age. Many Americans, if asked, probably
have many varying views and opinions on what peaceful resistance is. For some it could be marching
down the streets with signs, while for others its shouting their rights without causing any violence.
Now to me, peaceful resistance is when one or multiples stand for what they deem right or wrong
without causing any harm to others. To me this serves as a positive because not only does it allow for
people to be heard, but also for others to listen. When a peaceful protest takes place often enough it is
shown through the internet, social media, television, news, etc. At some point everyone will hear
about it and based on what they see they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Resistance can cause tension and division between people, but peaceful resistance is a pathway for
those to express themselves without violence. In all honesty I think the positives trump the negatives
because in the end they are fighting for what they want and what they should rightfully have. Isn t that
what America has been built off of? The fight for what we want and what we know is right, while
proving that is so. And for those who question What has happened to us? Why is it necessary, at this
moment, in this forum to repeat what should be axiomatic and accepted? (Civil Disobedience: A
Threat o Our Society) clearly have never faced injustice from those around them or the government. It
s necessary because these people have been treated unfairly and should not let what their ancestors
fought for to go to waste. People need to get out of their own heads and realize that injustice still
exists, inequality still exists, the government has too much say in what happens in our lives and that is
something not many see everyday. For example, my town is very safe and isolated. I ve grown up
never having seen violence, social prejudice, or anything unfair, which for a child is great for
protection, but growing up it made me and many around me ignorant to the world and what really
went down around our small bubble. I would watch the news and hear about gun violence,
kidnappings, rallies, and other dangers my mind couldn t fathom. Although I m happy to

Analysis Of Hunger Of Memory Richard Rodriguez
This story takes place in old Sacramento, California around the 1950 s. A lot of this excerpt from
Hunger of Memory covers Richard Rodriguez s childhood and how he has become a grown up. He is
the third of two Mexican immigrants in Sacramento and has two sisters and one brother. Rodriguez
shows his youth as unusual, because of to the battle between his private family life and his public life
outside of the family. Before Rodriguez was seven, Spanish was the everyday spoken language and is
a part of his home, (qtd. par. 17)... Spanish seemed to me the language of home. (Most days it was

Language discrimination refers to the unfair treatment of an individual based solely upon the
characteristics of their speech; such as, accent, size of vocabulary, and syntax. It can also involve a
person s ability or inability to use one language instead of another (Workplace Fairness). Rodriguez,
goes through this stage a couple of times, he feels uncomfortable when being asked to answer in
English, because he is unable to really understand the question or prompt. This really describes
Richard, in paragraph 10 he says, At five years of age, I knew just enough English for my mother to
trust me on errands to stores one block away . This is an example, of his vocabulary size and his
inability to create a syntax. Richard is not the only one that struggled to phrase sentences, his parents
have as well, in another quote from this chapter in paragraph 14, It was more troubling for me to hear
my parents speak in public: their high whining vowels and guttural consonants; their sentences that
got stuck with eh and ah sounds; the confused syntax; the hesitant rhythm of sounds so different from
the way gringos spoke. (Rodriguez) Richard felt uncomfortable hearing his parent speak in English, he

  • 2. Why Geography Matters Blij Why Geography Matters is a 282 page book, including the epilogue, written by Harm de Blij. It was published in New york, New York in 2005. Over the Summer I read and finished this book. This book is full of amazing facts and knowledge that pertain to , what geography is, how it effected past societies, how it will affect future societies, and how geography is a crucial part in our society. In the following summarization of Why Geography Matters , i will explain three main points that embody what this book is about, and what it tries to teach. The first main point that I want to talk about is the author giving the reader an insight on how the rth is always changing. He starts off by talking about ways that show the change in Earth. Ome ways that he explains are thing such as maps and charts. He then explains how the environment is constantly changing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first nation that he bring up is China. He talks about how China was thriving even though there were many outside forces trying to bother them, all the while not being a part of the U.N. Then, he talks about how only a few decades after devastating twin earthquakes, they had become, ... a nuclear power, an economic heavyweight, a military juggernaut... and a political force... He continues on talking about China and saying that with China s explosiveness into power, they have reached their economical potential. Later on in the book however, he talks about Africa and how it may end up declining, but could also end up rising. He talks about how Africa is ranked last in geographical areas competing for American attention. He continues on talking about how Africa is affected by things such as climate. But, there are also upsides that are happening for Africa such as less slavery and globalization. He ends this section by saying, Africa s time and turn will come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Erectile Dysfunction History History of ED Treatment Erectile dysfunction is one of the most serious diseases all the time. But today, this disease has taken menacing proportions. The first mention of impotence In literature, Thomas Hokkliva dated 1420 year first mentioned the word impotence in a poem. However, this term had a slightly different meaning it can easily be replaced by the words powerless and helpless . In its usual sense, the word is found in the book History of the Church in Britain dated 1655 year. There, the Pope virility of the Pope was called into doubt. It is difficult to believe but one of the first mentions of the word impotence was recorded in the Bible, where it had a clear reference to the sexual weakness of King David. The theme of sexual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such sentiments prevailed in the minds until the 19th century. In Russia, folk methods of treating impotence were popular. One of the recipes advised men to smear the man parts with a mixture of deer fat and chopped chicken hearts. In the late 19th century, scientific approach to the problem of sexual disorders appeared. American William Hammond, in 1883, wrote his Sexual impotence in the male and called early sex and masturbation the main reasons for ED. The scientist suggested the young men to refuse sex life up to 21 years, and limit the number of sexual acts to three a month. As the ED treatment, William Hammond suggested the abstention for a year. At the same time, moxibustion therapy with nettles and electrical stimulation were developed. In the 20th century, the struggle against male impotence became more efficient. Masturbation was justified, and doctors divided the causes of ED into psychological and physical. An enormous role was given to the background diseases that provoke impotence. The medicine made a huge step forward. There was a set of effective methods of treatment, which gave positive results in 95 % of cases, and the men returned to the joy of sexual life. For the treatment of psychological ED, hypnosis was actively used in 60s. Since 1982, doctors prescribed a special injection into the penis. Since 1985, vasodilators came to the rescue. At the beginning of the century, men got grafts in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Desktop Research Paper Violet Batchelor I believe that one of the most interesting and widely used and seen human computer interface devices is the desktop. Being only 20 years old, I have never personally owned a computer that did not have some kind of desktop. I had never thought to delve into why it was called the desktop until we discussed this in class. A computer s desktop is the place where the user can organize shortcuts to their different activites. Some examples are a link to an internet page, a shortcut to Microsoft Office, or a shortcut to My Computer in the file explorer. The desktop was invented along with the GUI (graphical user interface) and so I personally put it under the category of the granddaddy of computer interfaces. If you use a modern computer, you use a desktop. When you start up your machine, whatever operating system it is, the first thing you will see (once the computer has finished booting) is your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You can learn a lot about someone by how their desktop looks and what s in it. A writer would probably have hundreds of shortcuts to their unfinished screenplays, while a programmer may also have 100s of shortcuts, but to different coding projects. The desktop also, as users before the desktop know, makes using a computer much faster and easier. Instead of having to search (possibly through command line) for something you may possibly do everyday, you can make a shortcut to it (and in some cases, your computer will make one for you) and just click it. I can almost hear the AHA! moment of we ll call it a desktop! I imagine, especially in the beginning, that the name desktop was the best fit for this interface. A programmer looked around their desk, thinking what will we call this great new interface? and they saw their files and papers surrounding them and came to the logical conclusion that that interface full of their documents and files looked just like their desk in front of ... Numerous theories like Social Disorganization, Labeling Theory, and Strain Theory have been created to try to explain the connection between poverty and crime. As these theories demonstrate , the devastating external factors that poverty causes contribute to crime. Yet, the connection between poverty and crime continues to deliver new data, adding to the way criminologist analyze crime. These studies develop new methods including governmental programs , investments in certain areas or change in tax codes for tackling poverty emerge. Therefore, it is pivotal to continue studying the connection between poverty and crime to properly a large of factor of crime from its roots. The article Exploring the Factors Associated With Youth Homelessness and Arrest, by Kim Fielding and Cheryl Forchuk discusses the homeless epidemic found throughout Canada. It is estimated that around 150,000 Canadians are homeless, with around one third of those being juveniles. The article focuses on juveniles because of their fragile age and their lack of stable environment makes them prone to commit crimes in order to obtain basic necessities. The study includes interviews, surveys, and demographics to characterize the homeless participants in order to provide an understanding of their homeless situation. • 6. Special Education Teacher For Extended School Year What is it like to be a Special Education Teacher for Extended School Year? I learned during my field observation that being a special education teacher for Gwinnett County Public School (GCPS) opens the door to many opportunities, one of which is the availability to work as a teacher for Extended School Year (ESY). I also learned in order for students to be eligible for ESY services, they must have an IEP, be in a self contained classroom during the regular school year, and have data to support significant growth/gains made on their individual goals and objectives. In addition, the student has displayed regression when returning from a break. There are limited sites for ESY at the elementary level, as a result ESY is a competitive data based program for both students and teachers. The site I visited was Chattahoochee Elementary School in Duluth, Ga, there I had the opportunity to shadow a teacher in the Moderate/ASD program. Chattahoochee ES is an older, red brick building with a newer addition added to the top of the school. The wing where ESY is held was part of the new addition. It had tile floors, an exterior office, and six classrooms. Two of the six rooms are used as alert and calming areas, within these rooms there was adapted equipment, like a squeeze machine, listening station, and a trampoline. The classroom was divided into sections/areas, using gray partitions and study carols. Within these sections was a play area, individual task area, and reading area. There ... • 7. My Writing Class Reflection Signing up for this class is something I will never regret. I will be honest and tell you that I signed up for this class to get enough hours to qualify for certain loans. However, I am also honest in telling you I ve been excited about this class since I first saw it was being offered. I thought this class would be easy because I have written my whole life and have taken two creative writing classes in the past. Yet, this class definitely challenged me, as I have never been limited to writing about one topic (e.g. the Panhandle, love, and loss) before. What set this class apart from others I have taken is the discussion boards. The other creative writing classes I ve taken have not been online, and I do not recall ever receiving feedback from ... • 8. Presence In Okinawa When examining this issue through an economic lens, one can see that there are many negative implications of the U.S. maintaining a military presence in Okinawa. The article, Okinawa: Effects of Long term U.S. Military Presence, by Genuine Security, reveals that Japan pays for 70 percent of the total funding towards U.S. bases, leading to the sum of an estimated $100,000 contribution by the Japanese government to each U.S. military person stationed in Japan ( Okinawa: Effects of long term US Military Presence , 2007). This mass contribution is a drain to the Japanese economy. In addition, the arrangement regarding U.S. bases in Okinawa not only has detrimental effects on the Japanese economy. Japanese partners, such as the U.S., are suffering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... base removal in Okinawa may not be feasible, a plausible solution to this conundrum is for the U.S. to partially remove their presence from Okinawa. Japan would still have some military protection, but would not suffer the economic strains posed by the current level of U.S. military presence. A primary concern of this solution is that the U.S. would lack a presence in the Asian Pacific region. To address this concern, the U.S. army could relocate their army to Guam. Guam is a U.S. territory, unlike Okinawa which belongs to Japan. An argument against this solution is that the U.S. would have to pay extreme amounts to rebuild bases and support their armed forces in Guam. The Russian International Television Network article, Guam, Marianas brace for massive U.S/ military redeployment, asserts, More than a third of the estimated $8.7 billion cost of building the new facilities for the Marines is being funded by Japan, according to McClatchy reporter Adam Ashton ( Guam, Marianas Brace for Massive U.S. Military Redeployment , 2015). This would relieve the financial strain placed upon the U.S. in their relocation to Guam. If the U.S. military bases are not at least partially withdrawn from Okinawa, Japan, the U.S., and their global partners will continue to experience the catastrophic economic effects of this ... Featuring 21 artists who have made significant contributions to the global art scene within the past 30 years over the topic what is beauty. The exhibition was large scale survey of work from artists with heritage from Argentina, Colombia, México, Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil among many other places and intertwined aesthetic refinement and brutality of political and social realities of Latin America. Curated by Mari Carmen Ramirez one of the top Latin American Curators the exhibition features both curatorial and theoretical strategies to construct an argument that ask the audience to think about the idea of what beauty is or isn t using a Latin American perspective. Throught the exhibition viewers are presented with works that are pleasurable to the senses, informative of political and social situations, seductive and raw. The end result is an exhibition that takes the everyday and uses that perspective to examine material, subject matter, space in the form of social change. One thing I liked about the project was the use of visual art and diverse artistic processes as a way of offering different definitions and functions of beauty and aesthetics. • 14. Music Theory As A Worship Leader There are many ways to incorporate music theory as a worship leader and as a worship team. As a leader, there are very significant benefits to having a strong understanding of music theory including a greater ability to communicate to the team members according to their understanding, a better understanding of what you want from the band technically, and a greater proficiency in music which allows you to connect better with stronger musicians and train up weaker ones. As a worship team, integrating music theory comes with its own benefits and challenges. All worship bands need some level of music theory in order to function at any level of efficiency. So the contrast made here will between those who use very little music theory, such as those who have chord charts provided and nothing else, and those who may rely completely off of sheet music. Of course in this issue, as it is with many issues, it is a matter of balance and there is a sweet spot in between these two views. Many worship leaders learned how to play guitar or piano just well enough to play and sing at the same time before being pushed out to lead worship. That s my story. As soon as I could strum chords and sort of sing at the same time, I started to lead for the high school group at my church. • 21. The Key Aspects Of Mechanics Essay These tricks that the top level athletes perform all relate to the laws of physics, every trick has components of mechanics whether it be performed in a half pipe or just straight off the ground. The key aspects of mechanics that are essential for these tricks performed in a half pipe include Torque, Momentum, Centripetal force, Velocity, Acceleration; they also need to follow the laws of projectile motion, conservation of energy. All of these play a role in helping the top athletes perform tricks and giving them the ability to rotate in the air at will and land safely. The law of motion is Newton s first law of physics that relates to inertia. This law state that an object will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (rotating, moving straight) unless acted upon by external forces. This and the law, conservation of momentum, explain how the rotation occurs in the air. If you re rotating, you ll keep rotating unless a twisting force, or torque, acts to stop you. In other words if you re not rotating, you can t rotate unless a torque starts you rotating. Both of these apply to when snowboarders and skateboarders are in the air doing tricks. In relation to athletes it means that they will stay rotating and moving in an upward direction if it weren t for external forces such as gravity which helps decelerate them at 9.8ms 2 until they reach a final velocity of 0ms 1 and other external forces such as air resistance/friction that help slow down the ... The Merchant Of Venice Character Analysis In The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare examines attractive qualities in a royal suitor through the casket test designed by Portia s late father. Each suitor s choice represents his perception of himself, Portia, and marriage, therefore can be anticipated by his words and actions prior to and during the test. The presence and expression of bravado among the men functions as the most indicative characteristic of the men s choices, as a man s portrayal of himself can tell a great deal about his views towards women and relationships. This foreshadowing is accomplished through their boastful diction, willingness to risk, and reactions to the caskets. As the three caskets each represent a different viewpoint, the three men also represent three distinct personality types, thus different expressions of confidence which the reader is able to detect through the suitor s words and actions as they are systematically written by the author. The prince of Morocco is the first suitor whose choice is included in the play. One important factor in his interactions with Portia is racial prejudice. He immediately feels the need to acknowledge the elephant in the room with his opening comment Mislike me not for my complexion.... In all this great expansion of aqueducts and dams, concerned citizens like John Muir proclaimed that more must be done to protect the majesty and beauty of California before it is all gone. Inspired by the writing of Henry David Thoreau, which published Walden, a landmark book on the topic of environmentalism, and his years exploring and camping in the Sierra Nevada wilderness, Muir began to gather like minded scientists and thinkers in San Francisco. Efforts by Muir and the formation of his Sierra Club in the 1890s eventually met with success in convincing the federal government to protect the Yosemite Valley from logging and grazing interests, preserving the area into a newly formed forest reserve concept of a national park (Fox, p. 106). Muir had less success in preserving the sister valley of Hetch Hetchy, which eventually was dammed and flooded to use as a reservoir for the inhabitants of San Francisco. Up till the 1950s, environmental activism was fractured among diverse groups with diverse causes: water quality, overpopulation, air quality, clean beaches, toxic wastes, pesticides, endangered wildlife.
