emphasizing points of focus.
Master Planning of the Campus commits to
the cultivation of a ‘place’, where the
imageability of a seemingly overbearing
architecture is surmounted by the
POROSITY OF THE SKIN and the affability
with which the ground transitions from the
street outside to a ‘vertical street’ inside.
AERO SPACE BLOCK
The massing is a juxtaposition of three distinct wings,
with one bar projecting into the streetscape to craft a
strong visual statement as well as creating an
engaging connection with the rest of the campus.
The design takes off from the conceptual
vision of recreating a ‘hangar-like’
volume, which would define the buildings
form and lend itself to the function it
primarily houses.

ARCHITECTURE BLOCK
the building was envisioned as
a pure extrusion of a rectangle
an internal ‘grey’ volume held together by the
structural grid, wrapped by a cantilevering
envelope that forms the façade.
Located along a street, the perforations on this
façade coupled with the exposed circulation
paths that boldly swathe it, help break the
massive volume down to a more human scale

continue to be perceived as an
opaque mass
LIFE SCIENCE BLOCK
FLAME UNIVERSITY, pune
This texture could be felt in an Indian village street. The strong visual forces,
looking on to the hills, combined with the activities makes the intended 'places'.
Thus an open to sky pedestrian 'spine' emerges as the salient design feature
that connects the various blocks, enacting as a 'breathing space'.
Orientation of the spine along the north-south direction keeps a major part of the spine in shade,
creating cool spaces of repose in the hot tropical sun during the day. The silhouette of shadows along
the spine creates interesting patterns to behold. Innovative combination of clad and bare concrete
surfaces explores a palette of myriad textures and play of light, augmenting the visual interest.

University campus literature study

  • 1. MAHINDRA UNITED WORLD COLLEGE, PUNE. CRESCENT UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI. FLAME UNIVERSITY, pune
  • 2. Location : Located 40 kilometres to the west of Pune, a city which in turn is about 100 kilometres south east of Mumbai. Construction : 1996-1999 MAHINDRA UNITED WORLD COLLEGE , PUNE, INDIA Architects : Benninger Christopher & Associates, Pune, India Faculties - 25 Students - 200 "REGIONAL ARCHITECTURE."
  • 3. View of the Mahadwara from the administrative building 170-acre campus is nestled in the Sahayadri Hills, between two river valleys: the Mula and the Pauna Site area : 627285 Sq m Mahadwara
  • 4. Layout planning- ACADEMIC and RESIDENTIAL Hierarchy of space played important role in design pedestrian walkway linking the academic wing to the residential wing.

Light towers receive light along with the movement of the sun Total floor area : 10775 Sq m Concept.. •The building are a reflection of the mountains surrounding the campus . •A miniature model reflecting the jagged contours. •Continuity and harmony achieved through consistency between the architectural language and environment.
  • 6. The administrative building reflects the architectural language of the campus waterspouts. The light towers are designed to receive light along the movement of the sun
  • 7. The Amphitheatre uses steps to link the multipurpose hall to the academic quadrangle Academic quadrangle reflecting the Gigantic mountains at the backdropIt encircles a garden court. Quadrangle and class rooms are linked by glass doors The concept of one point perspective was utilized to resolve the scale resolution of the mountains and structures classrooms have verandahs and extend into courtyards The Academic quadrangle is penetrated at its four cardinal quadrants by portals Pathways creating hierarchy in the building structure in the academic area

The library twists a light atrium into the center of the structure Interior view of the administrative Building enveloping the outdoor garden Used sequence of open, semi enclosed and closed spaces to create learning environments. Sliding glass panels and pivoted doors provide transparency between the interior and exterior spaces. Triangular composition on two levels focussed in on a glass atrium
  • 10. Coffered triangles span the six thousand square feet multi purpose hall 160 triangular coffers set within 10 larger triangles defined by structural beams. There are 10 skylights in these Multi Purpose Hall Three wings of the Art Center North facing studio windows provide Light and views in the art center

  • 15. 61 acres links with the streets that feed them- creating nodes re-defining vital axes and emphasizing points of focus. Master Planning of the Campus commits to the cultivation of a ‘place’, where the imageability of a seemingly overbearing architecture is surmounted by the POROSITY OF THE SKIN and the affability with which the ground transitions from the street outside to a ‘vertical street’ inside.

  • 18. The massing is a juxtaposition of three distinct wings, with one bar projecting into the streetscape to craft a strong visual statement as well as creating an engaging connection with the rest of the campus.
  • 19. The design takes off from the conceptual vision of recreating a ‘hangar-like’ volume, which would define the buildings form and lend itself to the function it primarily houses.

  • 21. A conceptualization of the street integrating into the building. A public plaza at the first floor level forms this ‘hangar’ and serves as an extension of the streetscape, linking the open spaces in front and behind the building

  • 24. the building was envisioned as a pure extrusion of a rectangle an internal ‘grey’ volume held together by the structural grid, wrapped by a cantilevering envelope that forms the façade. Located along a street, the perforations on this façade coupled with the exposed circulation paths that boldly swathe it, help break the massive volume down to a more human scale The random play of the strip-like windows allows the built envelope to continue to be perceived as an opaque mass LIFE SCIENCE BLOCK

  • 27. This texture could be felt in an Indian village street. The strong visual forces, looking on to the hills, combined with the activities makes the intended 'places'. Thus an open to sky pedestrian 'spine' emerges as the salient design feature that connects the various blocks, enacting as a 'breathing space'.

  • 39. Orientation of the spine along the north-south direction keeps a major part of the spine in shade, creating cool spaces of repose in the hot tropical sun during the day. The silhouette of shadows along the spine creates interesting patterns to behold. Innovative combination of clad and bare concrete surfaces explores a palette of myriad textures and play of light, augmenting the visual interest.
