The document provides an outline for a presentation on analyzing magazines Q and Kerrang!. It includes 20 slides covering various topics like the content, genre, frequency, target audience, form and style of each magazine. It also analyzes elements like the front covers, contents pages, and double page spreads. The document aims to do a comprehensive comparative analysis of the two music magazines.
5. Content of Q magazine
In Q magazine they like to cover various content such as guest
interviews where like to talk about their personal songs and what they
would like to do in the future years of their career. Before their
interviews they like to get their audience involved by asking them to
send in some questions for the chosen question.
6. Content of Kerrang! magazine
Looking at Kerrang’s front covers it is very clear
that they are all about publishing magazines
focusing on heavy rock and metal music. You can
see they have artists such as ‘Black Veil Brides’,
and ‘Green Day’. The magazines cover content
such as articles, interviews and you can also
usually win something such as a poster.
7. About Kerrang!
• Kerrang is a UK based magazine devoting it to rock
music published by Bauer media group. Kerrang
magazine cover articles and interviews on Rock music.
Usually inside Kerrang magazine they always offer free
posters which you can see on the two front covers
below.
8. Genre of Q
Qs magazine is eclectic as they talk about a wide range of genres.
Even though they do like to keep it a wide range of genres they do
keep putting reviews and articles constantly reoccurring to do with
pop/rock music. As you can see in the front covers below there is a
wide range of music artists. You have Tinie Tempah who has a pop
and rap style, Cheryl Cole who is pop, Foo Fighters who is rock and
Metallica who is Rock.
9. Genre of Kerrang!
For Kerrang magazine they are completely different in terms of genre,
where the genre of Q is eclectic, meaning they present many genres
instead of focusing on any specific ones. Kerrang focuses on Rock
music. Unlike Q magazine they don’t have a wide range within the
types of genres as they do only focus on Rock, this can mean that they
wont get as much recognition in comparison to other magazine such
as Q due to their audience being limited to the chosen genre which is
not as popular as others which are based on pop.
10. Frequency
‘Q’ magazine has gained a lot of popularity over the years of
constantly publishing their material. At one point they had nearly
ninety thousand magazines in circulation all over the country, with
around 70% being men and 30% being women and the median age of
29. They release a magazine every month, people with subscriptions
are able to get the magazine earlier than others that choose to
subscribe to Q.

circulation-declines-average-6-per-cent/
11. Frequency
Kerrang magazine are consistent when it comes to
publishing their magazine as they are constantly releasing
a new magazine every week, including high quality news
and exclusives that will keep their readers up to date. They
are a weekly magazine releasing a magazine every
Saturday.
12. Target audience of Q
The magazine ‘Q’ appeals to a much wider audience because it
includes a bigger variety of music. According to Hartley’s 7
Subjectivities the target audience would be both genders just
because this magazine doesn’t have a main focus of genre as it looks
at a much bigger range of genres unlike most magazines. The
magazine like to focus on ages 15-24 years old because they will then
be able to reach out to much more people meaning they will then
make more money. Looking at the Katz’ Uses and Gratification
theory I am able to say that the magazine is all about informing and
educating their audience as they like to include people from all kinds
of backgrounds of music, also they are constantly talking about new
bands, records and top hits for example. Maslow's theory allows us to
say that the magazine connects with many different groups
everywhere as it includes multiple genres, inviting all the groups of
people that match Maslow’s theory.
13. Target audience of Kerrang!
Looking at the front covers of Kerrang magazines I can tell that the target
audience for the magazine is for people who are fans of rock and indie
music. According to Hartley’s Seven Subjectivities the target audience
would be primarily male aged between 16-30 year olds. Furthermore
according to Katz Uses and Gratification’s the audience will be able to
‘divert’ themselves away from everyday situations such as work by
reading this magazine full of new Rock and Indie music articles and
interviews that they will like. Also they will be ‘informed and educated’ on
up to date Rock and Indie music artists.
According to Maslow the target audience could possibly be ‘care givers’ if
there is an interview inside that highlights an artist having troubles in the
music industry or home life.
According to the socio-economic needs table the target audience would
primarily be D and E category because the target audience are a young
demographic they will not have high paid and skilled jobs like people in
the A category.
14. Socio-economic needs
A Upper middle class Higher managerial, administrative or professional
job employment
B Middle class Intermediate managerial, administrative or
professional job employment
C1 Lower middle class Supervisory or clerical and junior managerial
administrative or professional job employment
C2 Skilled working class Skilled manual workers
D Working class Unskilled manual workers
E Casual / lowest grade
workers
Pensioner and others who depend on the welfare
state for their income
According to the socio-economic needs table ‘Q’ magazine does focus their target audience on the
categories of B and C1 to C2 and D as they sometimes like to look towards an audience of about 30-
40 year olds, people that have been working their whole lives and have got to the higher classes
through hard work. However they also look at the younger ages because most of the time they
publish things to do the music genre of pop music.
15. Socio-economic needs
According to the socio-economic needs table ‘Kerrang’
magazine does focus their audience to be people younger
ages as the content is quite formal as it contains some
language which a person in category A – C1 would not
really prefer to read. The magazine really target age
averages at 22, but the target ages is 17-24, this would
mean that looking at the socio-economic needs table that
they would focus on the classes of D and E as that would
be people at the targeted age.
16. Purpose and Meaning
Q magazine
When you look at the logo for ‘Q’ magazine you instantly think
of how the Q is written in a more sophisticated font where
there is a flick, this can connote a formal intention as it is a quite
a dull plain logo which links to their target audience which is
focused on the people aged from 30-40 years old.
Kerrang magazine
This magazine is much different when you compare it to ‘Q’
magazine as it has a much more informal look with the choice
of font. Further to this, as the font is quite an unpleasing and
unorganized look to the magazine and therefore fits perfectly
with the target audience which is Rock.
17. Website annotations
The tab at the top
with all their pages
allows us to explore
with what they like to
show on their
website.
The top right corner
shows all their social
platforms that they
use to keep up to
date with their
followers. This is
great way to make
your magazine bigger
as more and more
people are able to find
out about the
magazine.
This shows that
there is
somewhere that
you are able to
vote, this helps
with getting their
audience
involved and
share an
important part to
do with Q
magazine.
Having a subscribe button is
very important on their website
as it allows the people who
show a lot of interest in the
magazine they are then able to
keep up to date.
With this
magazine
hosting awards
allows them to
get more
publicity
especially if it
included bigger
artists that are
well known.
18. Website annotations
The eye-catching
title really would
catch the readers
attention. Also, the
plain font isn't really
of an informal
nature which would
link to its targeted
audience
The scroll bar at
the top is really
plain and simple
which connotes its
preferred audience
and formal nature
that they strive for.
Their news section
again relates to
their preferred
audience of ages
17-24 as it links to
the socio-economic
needs and its
formal class that it
appeals to.
Looking at most of the
website it does contain a
large amount of black
which would imply the
linking factors with the
musical genres for the
magazine as they all
contain the colour black.
The colour yellow
connotes joy, happiness
and intellect which would
mean that even though
they focus on quite dark
and depressing music they
do like to put across joy
and happy thoughts.
19. Form and style
With ‘Q magazine’ they mainly like to use the same regular colours every time
they publish a new magazine, the colours they prefer to use to use is red, white
and black. This means that they like to keep their style the same which could
suggest that they are consistent with their content and they always be of the
high standards that their reader expects.
The size of the magazine is always the same which is roughly 30.6cm by
22.2cm. Further to this, they like to keep their form the same every monthly
publish with their logo in the top right, and then a new featuring celebrity in the
middle and all important exclusive information around them.
20. Form and style
In comparison to ‘Q’ magazine Kerrang does keep their magazine quite similar
as they like to remain with the same colours on every cover: Red, black and
white. All these colours are to go with the chosen genre which is mostly Rock.
These colours all represent a certain thing, red connotes: blood and fire but can
also be associated with love, passion, desire, heat and determination. This can
be linked to how Kerrang like to be when it comes to releasing their magazines.
The colour black portrays: mystery, negativity, strength, seriousness. It also can
be seen as a formal, elegant and prestigious. Lastly, the colour white suggests:
light, success, purity and positivity.
The dimensions of the magazine is near
enough the same as any other:
Kerrang 28.5cm by 21.3cm
21. Double page spread analysis
The main part to this double
page spread is the chosen
model, Ed Sheeran. Using
someone as popular as him, it’s
a great way to attract more
people who are a fan of him into
reading the magazine. Further to
this, the background, Q has
chosen the background to be
the houses of parliament, this
goes back to the idea that Ed
Sheeran is an extremely
important artist in the UK.
This is the use of a pull quote. Q magazine has done this to let
people to know that in this magazine he is referred to several
times and is a key part to this magazine. Another technique used
was speech and bold text: “I’M BRINGING GINGER BACK!”. The
use of bold letters and speech is to pull people in as they want to
see what their idol has to say on the subject. Further to this, the
use of Red text on the word is so that it will stand out a lot more.
The use of a stand first is to add to the importance
of the pull quote as it gives the reader an idea of
what is to come in the magazine.
The technique used here is a
drop capital. They have used
the colour scheme for the
magazine which is red and
white, also adding in the bold
and big red text which is there
to contrast against the rest of
the writing which is black and
white. The use of the drop
capital is once again used to
entice people into reading the
article which would add
together the model choice,
stand first and the pull quote.
22. Front cover analysis of Q
The Masthead:
Located in the top left of the
page, standing out more
anything else on the page.
Barcode/Date/Price:
The barcode is located in the
bottom left corner, this is so
the price and date is able
Cover lines:
These are here to help the
magazine to sell as they
provide the reader with news
of possible exclusives to do
with well-known celebrities.
Main image:
The main image is a close up picture of ‘Florence’. As she is
positioning of the photograph is fitted to take up the whole of the
front page to catch the eye of the reader. The main image goes
behind the Masthead because even though the main image is
there to attract readers it is not as important as what the brand is
trying to sell.
Pull quote:
The pull quote used “ I feel so
alone” is there to make the
audience want to read the article
as they will want to find out why
she feels ‘alone’.
Main headline:
The main headline is ‘Florence’
which is identifying who the main
image is of.
Puff promotion:
This is used to promote
something, in this case it was “
Zane Lowe, where’ve all the
guitars gone?’ this is used to
attract more readers as people
who are fans of Zane Lowe will
see his name on the front cover
will feel intrigued to read how his
interview went.
Anchorage text:
This is used to pull in more
readers as it builds suspense as
the audience will want to know
what makes Florence feel on the
edge.
Strap line:
“discover great music” is a
confident quote which would
be used to make people
want to read the magazine
as they would believe it’s the
best magazine to discover
the best music.
23. Front page analysis of Kerrang!
The Masthead:
On this magazine they use the
masthead in bold text to make it
stand out. The font used with the
broken look, reflects on the
chosen genre for this magazine
which is Rock which is known for
rebellion against others.
The Header:
For the header of this
magazine they mention a rock
band called, Killswitch engage,
this is there because a lot of
the target audience will know
what they are talking about.
The main image:
The main image on this front
cover is a mid shot of the main
lead singer in the rock band foo
fighters. As they are a very
popular band known by a huge
amount, this is used to attract
more people as they are on of
the top rock bands that are still
around.
Barcode / date:
On this magazine the barcode is located in
the bottom right of the front cover, this is to
make it easier for the buyers to see the
issue date.
The main cover line:
The cover line used on this
front cover is “FOO FIGHTERS
back to blow your mind!” in big
bold text which is there to make
it clear who they are promoting
as their main image. This also
is used to attract people when it
is on a shelf with various other
magazines.
Puff promotion:
This is used on the front cover of
this magazine as it is a way of
attracting more people to buy their
magazine, even if someone isn't a
buyer of Kerrang if they see them
promoting the band then people
will want to buy it.
Pull quote:
On the front cover of this
magazine they have used the pull
quote of “INME their filthiest
interview ever!” because it is a
great way to attract more readers
as it makes people looking at the
front cover of this magazine want
to buy it because of the adjective
‘filthiest’.
The footer:
This is used on the magazine front
cover to add In extra information which
might attract different readers who are
fans of the artists promoted.
24. Heading:
The Q logo is a reasonably small font,
suggesting that the magazine is well
known, this means that there would be
no need to have a bigger font.
Sub-heading:
Having ‘feature’ there is a way in which
they are able to attract the audience’s
attention. Advertising things such as
“pro green exclusive track” is there to
make the reader feel like they are
getting information they cant get
anywhere else.
Plug:
“140 songs to download now” is there
to attract the audiences attention. This
stands out making the reader want to
flip straight to page 58.
Tagline:
“discover great music”. This is there to entice the audience to read more of the
magazine as they want to go and discover more great music as they are believed
to find it in Q magazine.
Main image:
The close up of Lana Del Ray shows her
staring directly at the camera as if she is
staring at the audience, this is used to make
the people seeing the magazine feel like they
need to buy it.
Page numbers:
The use of bold writing and the colours of red
and white are both used to make it all stand
out. This is there to give It more importance
and make the readers flick to the page
immediately.
Colour scheme:
The colours used on the front page are very
simple, this is to link it with the traditional ‘Q’
magazine red and white. This is because the
magazine isn't about its look but is 100%
focused on giving their audience reliable
content that is interesting.
Layout:
For this magazines layout it is very specific in
there placement and likes to keep it all in
order and relevance. This is all good because
it makes it an page to read, which could then
entice more and more readers as they will
prefer to read something that is quite simple.
Form of address:
In this magazine they write using
informal text and occasionally rude.
This I because the target audience of
‘Q’ is mainly towards an older audience
which is the reason for the
inappropriate language. However, this
is because it would make the reader
feel more comfortable reading it.
Contents page analysis of Q
25. Masthead:
The style of the contents titles
is made very similar to the
original ‘Kerrang!’ title, this Is
to make the readers feel more
comfortable as they are
reading their magazine.
Main image:
This is an image of Metallica,
this is used as they are a very
well-known band in the Rock
industry, because of this it will
attract more readers because
of Metallica's high popularity.
Editorial footer:
This is sued to make people
known to the editor of the
magazine and make it more
intriguing to read because you
get the feeling that you have
some kind of relationship with
the reader because of what
they produced. The editorial
text is written in an informal
way because of the language
used, it Is written in a very laid
back, casual and friendly way.
Sub-headings:
Looking at the magazine, straight
away you can see that the sub-
heading are much bolder and they
are in a bigger font size. This is
because, when they are of a
bigger size it makes it easier for
the readers to see what content is
beneath it and could potentially
want people to read it more.
Sub Lines:
The use of the sub lines is there to
give the reader a brief idea of what
they are to expect if they read the
magazine.
Puff Promotion:
This is a very popular way to
promote something in a magazine,
this allows the readers to be pulled
into reading the magazine
because it is telling the reader that
they can “win” something if they
look inside. Also the pug promotion
in the bottom right corner is telling
the readers that they can get a
subscription for a low price of £5,
this is a reasonable price which
will make it much more successful.
Contents page
Kerrang! analysis
26. Double page spread analysis of Kerrang!
Pull quote:
In a magazine such as
‘Kerrang!’ a pull quote is
used to “pull” the reader in.
For example, the pull quote
used on the double page of
this Kerrang magazine is
“DO I EVER HAVE A
CASUAL FRIDAY?
ABSOLUTELY!”, this quote
is there to make the
audience feel like they have
some relevance when
reading this; also it is used
to make the reader want to
find out more about the
topic.
Stand first:
This is used as a quick
short introduction which
covers interviews. Its
importance is that it gives
the reader need information
if they are to buy it.
Questions and answers:
This Is used to interact
with their audiences by
getting them involved with
their published magazines,
also it will allow their
readers to feel important
as they will have their
question answered.
Drop capitals:
This technique is used in
a great way to get the
attention of the reader,
this works through the
bolder and larger text.
Main image:
The placement of
the image isn’t in
the centre which
could mean that the
text beside is just
as important as the
main image. The
main image is on
the left side this
could suggest that
the focus of the
double page spread
is not only to show
the celebrity but to
make sure the
audience gets their
fill of important
information to with
exclusive
interviews and
news.
Interview:
On the double page spread (dps) they have included written text of the
interview / Q&A. a question and answers is the most popular way to go
through with an interview as its easier and much quicker; also sometimes
the questions are taken by the fans and readers which Is another great way
to attract more readers as they will want answers to their questions.
27. Production process (Q and Kerrang!)
I had sent the publishers of both these magazines
of inspiration trying to get a response to do with
help for my own magazine that I am in preparation
of creating. The idea of this email was to find out
how a top tier magazine produces a magazine, even
though I didn't get an answer helping me with my
magazine I was still given a rough idea of how I can
make my magazine better than others. After that, I
received a response clearly stating that they are no
longer the owner of “Kerrang!” Magazine.
28. Magazine Production Process
Date of publication – For the first step in making a magazine is to set up a date for when to release it. This means that when you release it to
the general public it will be a finished product. After it is official, it is important to be working with a schedule. This Is another version of a plan
that is needed to be followed after each of the steps occur.
Managing the schedule – Further to this, following the date of publication this is another important step. To make my magazine successful
then I will need to make sure that I follow my schedule. Also, I will need to manage the schedule because if there were obstacles to occur will
need to make sure that I come out with my magazine still meeting the deadline. Reasons such as this makes following the schedule extremely
important.
Editorial and budgetary decision – for this step, following the production process of a magazine is the editorial decision. The editorial
decisions involve the magazine’s editorial team assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in the next issue of the magazine. The
editorial team talk about the various contents that will make the magazine. In my magazine I will have great content that I intend to do some
background research that the public will more than likely want to read.
Content acquisition – this step is most definitely the more important step that is need when publishing a magazine. This is because without
the content we simply cannot have the magazine in the first place. Therefore, content needs to be the most concentrated section to making a
magazine. There are two major ways that content can be gathered for a magazine. Firstly, is the house-staff writers and the second way is
through external writers that are made to write on a given topic. At this point, artwork and graphics are worked on and developed. The
artwork is illustrations and pictures that are going to be in the magazine. Graphics are the pictures of images that are designed with a
computer program.
Sub-editing – after the previous step this is the next one that has to be taken. This focuses on one major thing, this is quality control. If the
media organization is large enough to have a sub-editor, then he is going to be responsible for this job; if there is no sub-editor, then the
editor does this job. There are a few things that must be followed: checking of the accuracy of all facts in the articles, making sure that words
are properly spelt, making sure that grammar and punctuation are used correctly, making sure that all articles follow the house-style and
finally working on the page layout.
Page layout – in bigger magazines, there are special teams that are responsible for the page layouts, they are called the layout staff. Their job
is to typeset and layout the carious pages that come together to make the magazine. In performing this task, they use very powerful desktop
publishing programs such as InDesign or PageMaker to get this job complete. It is at this stage that adverts from advertisers are place into the
content.
Proofreading – once all the stages above have been complete, the stage that follows this is proofreading. The editorial department will print
out a hardcopy of the magazine for the sole purpose of reading through to find and correct any mistakes in it. It is easier to proofread a
hardcopy than it is to do the same with a soft copy. Any mistake that is spotted is correctly quickly on the DTP file. As this is happening the
team do not stop with the proofreading until every member is satisfied that all mistakes have been completed properly.

29. Conclusion
Over this period of looking into my chosen magazines of “Q” and
“Kerrang!” I have picked out the certain points they go through
when they are producing a magazine. This has all given me great
ideas for my magazines that plan on making for media year 12
work, in this process I will be using my magazines of inspiration to
produce my own which are going to be called “Catalyst” and
“Monthly Ovation – MO”. Throughout LO1 I have made detailed
notes on every important part to magazine (Q and Kerrang!). The
reason for this is so that I would have some knowledge on certain
successful magazine which would then help me with making sure I
know what it needed and what is going to help with my magazines
success, such as the genre and models.
