Q magazine
Q magazine has a variety of different genres of music.
Evidence of the eclectic music in the magazine is on their homepage where
there are exclusive images and songs of Paul McCartney in 1981, which
premieres a remix of his song Tug of War, which is rock and pop genre music.
Also, further down the homepage, there is an article about 50 Cents, who are
a modern hip hop music. Also in the magazine, there are different examples
of artists who all have a different genre of music such as Amy Winehouse the
year after she died, Cheryl Cole and David Bowie .
The magazine is supported by the demographics of the Q magazine. As all age
ranges do read the magazine because of the eclectic range of articles . The
highest percentage of people who read Q magazine is male between the ages
of 15-24 , as they would be interested in different generation of music, like U2
or David Bowie. So they can explore their music interest.
Purpose and Meaning
The denotation of the strapline line for Q
magazine is “The World’s Greatest Music
Magazine. This suggests that this magazine has an
eclectic mix of music for all generations to read as
this magazine is made with the best quality for the
reader. The use of the word “World's” convey that
the magazine is a success and is a global magazine.
This could also denote that the magazine is so
popular that it is sold globally. The superlative
“greatest” suggests that the Q magazine is made
to a high quality, it is one of a kind and you can’t
get the same information about music is another
magazine.
The masthead of the magazine is eye-catching, simple and bold. The letter “Q” on the masthead
suggests that this is a mature magazine because of the front of the “Q”. The masthead is bold and
stands out. The red background is eye catching and bright, this could suggest that this is a powerful
magazine because the red symbolises power and this will give you the exclusive information and
you are able to explore different genres of music. In addition, the white contrasts with the red
background, making the white letters bold and easier on the eye for the target audience.
The main image of Amy Winehouse is on the cover of Q magazine. Her
facial expression is neutral, which could convey that this is the end of
her impact of music, a year after she died. This could bring out an
emotion from the audience as she died and therefore stopped creating
music. In addition, the audience can see her tattoos of the two red and
black hearts, the red could represent her love for music and the black
could represent her drug addiction and how her life ended so tragically .
The barcode, issue date and price,
will inform the audience of the
magazine’s price and the issue date
of the magazine.
The headline of the magazine is “exclusive
Amy Winehouse tribute CD” this means the
audience can read and listen to her best
song in her time alive like Rehab or Back and
Black.
The inside features in the red box, is
the exclusive of which articles will be
mentioned in the magazine, this show s
different artist s mentioned in the
magazine and how they attract
different age range of audiences like
Rizzle kicks and Maroon 5 for the
teenagers and Stewart Lee for adults.
Coverlines/Pull-quote is used to attract
the audience. Red and white have been
chosen as the colour theme for this issue
of the magazine. This could be because
the letters are more eye-catching for the
audience, which could contrast against
the dark, dull, grey.
The background of Amy Winehouse could be a white door, where
there is no light which make the door look grey. This could represent
her life ending and also the ending of her music. This could express an
emotion of sadness, loss of someone who have changed the music
industry forever by her voice. The door could represent a talented
young woman walking out of our lives as the alcohol and drug
addiction took over her life. On the other hand, this could convey that
the alcohol and the drugs entered her life and led to her death. The
door could represent the duality of her life, her love of music and
enjoyment of entertaining her fans and the darkness of her addictions
which happened behind closed doors. The main cover of the magazine is “Amy” in capital letters to
emphasise that it’s been a year since she died. This could
attract the audience to buy this magazine as she is still famous
and still well known for her music, even after she died and
people may want to know more about her life and her death.
The name “Amy” is in large white writing so this can contrast
the white and grey so the letter can be more eye catching for
the audience.
Frequency
Q magazine circulates monthly.
This means Q magazine would be more expensive because they are only published once a month
and therefore, will have more content than a weekly magazine such as Kerrang!. Q magazine
would cost more than Kerrang! because Q contains more information and it is monthly. Q
magazine is £4.20, whilst Kerrang! Is £2.20 as this is weekly and contains less information about
music.
The circulation figures in 2013 was 52,781 between July - December 2013.
You can subscribe on your phone, on your tablet and through the magazine, which is branded
“best values” for £37.00 for 12 issues per year. Whilst on the Q website you can buy a magazine
for £32.00 for 12 issues per year. In addition, you can get the digital magazine on Q in your phone
or your tablet, for £32.00.
You can buy a ticket master gift card which is worth £20 which you can subscribe to.
This shows that you
can subscript to a
paperback magazine
or get a Q on your
phone
This barcode
shows the price
of the magazine
and also the
month when the
magazine was
released.
Format and Style
Format
The length of the magazine is 21.6cm whilst the width is 28.3cm .
You can download Q on the customers’ tablet and phone if they subscribe to Q for 12
issues before buying another subscription for the following year. The content of the
music magazine is thicker than the other magazine, as it packs in more information
about the music and the artists.
Language
The Strapline of Q is “The World’s Greatest Music Magazine "suggesting that they
are a bold and confident magazine which means the information will be bold and
also give the audience confidence that they are paying for better quality information
about music than other magazines such as Mojo or Kerrang!.
The quote on the front cover of Q is “World Exclusive”, which means no one else in
the world has the information that Q has about U2, also that it is the first time U2
has released the information to the public, which means they must buy the
magazine to know more about U2.
On the editor’s letter, which is a single page spread, they address the reader by
saying “Your new issue of Q is a collection of stories about the value of taking your
time”, this suggest that Q belongs to everyone not to the publishing company, Bauer
Media Group. Moreover, this suggests that the audience is the part of Q and is just
as important as the music itself.
On the double page spread, it was an interviewed with Ellie Goulding, it stated that
“it could shatter Goulding’s nice girl image. This suggests that Goulding doesn’t want
to be a pop star and want to be taken more seriously as an artist. So by having an
interview with Q, she is being rebellious and shattering her clean image, as she is
growing in her music and fame, which implies that she is an artist who will take over
the music world.

House Style and Colour Scheme
Colour Scheme
The main house colour of Q is red as this is the colour of the logo on the masthead. In addition,
white is another house colour as the letter Q is in white and also when there is a dark page in
the magazine, they would use a white colour font. Also, they would use a black colour font to
be presented on each page.
Therefore, the main colour of Q magazine are red, white and black, are they will be feature on
every page of the magazine. This is important because this is a type of brand identity included in
the magazine. The potential reason why red is the main colour of Q magazine is because it is
bright and eye- catching for the audience to see. In addition, the colour red represent strength
and power, which mean that Q will have the power to influence people about music. This is
important as more people will be buying Q as the magazine will change people’s mind about
the music industry.
Also, the magazine feature the colour white and black. This is important as both colours will
contrast with each other and therefore it will cause them to stand out. The colour white
represent goodness. This is important as the content in the magazine will be accurate and
therefore good to release to the public. However, the colour black will represent mystery. This is
important as every issues of Q is will be a mystery who will be on the front cover and features in
the magazine. This information create cerosious for the audience and therefore they will have
to buy the magazine.
However, on the front cover of the magazine in the October 2015 issue, they also use the colour
yellow because throughout the magazine there are text boxes on some pages that are yellow,
which suggests that they feel yellow is a bright colour that makes people feel good. In addition,
they may use yellow in the magazine because they have an exclusive interview with U2 as this
is the biggest band in the world so Q use the colour yellow to attract the readers to the
magazine. Achieving an exclusive interview with U2 is a big scoop for the magazine as well as a
huge selling point.
House Style
The house style of Q magazine is to repeat their mastheads throughout the magazine next to
the page number. This is a type of brand Identity, as they are always branding themselves on
each page. Moreover, Q magazines always include their house colours of red, white and black
on each page. Moreover, throughout the music magazine, individual pages of text are all the
size for each box of text and all of the font is in the same style.

Double Page Spread Analysing
The drop capital is to attract the audience to read about Elle
Goulding’s albums and learn fun facts about her albums and
rumours about her songs. Also, it named the producers, the
release date, where the albums were recorded and tracks on
the drop capital.
The technical code of the medium
shot on the double page spread
focuses on Ellie Goulding . The
photograph of Ellie Goulding is taken
with a medium shot, as her hands are
over her headphone. This could
suggest that music is really important
to her as in the background, she is in
the recording studio planning one of
her many hits. Her face shows high
concentration, which implies that she
wants to make the best music possible.
She has chosen to wear black clothing
instead of bright coloured clothing
which suggests she could be trying to
rip off her good girl image and become
more rebellious . This implies that as
she is changing, also her music will
change.
On the left of the image there is a pull quote which is in bold
white capital letters. This is accompanied by a specific quote that
was included from the interview. The pull quote from Q “Hear Me
Roar” conveys that we haven’t heard the best of Ellie Goulding
yet. In addition, this could suggest that she was never number
one on the music magazine in the past and is determined to
achieve that position now and she won’t be second best without a
fight, as she is the number one female artist for Q.
The stand first on the double page spread is below the pull quote as
her name is highlighted in yellow to ensure the she actually said that
to Q . It is also eye-catching to the audience so they can quickly read
her threat to the music industry as she will become a global artist. In
addition, the quote is in red with the rest of the interview text in
black. Also the front is bold in colour and eye-catching for the reader
who will be drawn to read this quote.
Having another drop capital
in pale yellow about the next albums of
other artists such as CeeLo Cool, Wilko
Johnson or Deadmaus, suggests that all of
these artists mentioned are her rivals in the
music industry. During the double page
spread the focus is on Ellie Goulding as the
public eye is on her as she is the up and
coming artists and her album will change her
clean image and also the audience will have
high expectations for this album because she
has put all of her energy and power into the
new albums. She has expressed some
emotive phrases that will keep the readers
wondering about her new attitude to her
music.
Contents Analysis
The sub line of the
magazine summarise
the artist, interviews
and also the page
number of the review,
which is called the Q
Review, suggesting
that writers interview
the artist and what
they have done or
write a review of what
they have done.
On the right side of the
magazine the Q logo can be
found along with the issue
date of the magazine.
On the content page the page number
anchors the main picture of the artist and
directs the audience to read the story
about their favourite artists. In addition,
below the page number there is a
summary of what the artist has achieved
or facts about them so the audience can
understand them more as the person
than a celebrity.
On the main picture of U2
on the content page, they
a flash which stated
“Cover Story” this suggests
that they are the main
focus of this issue of Q,
therefore this will attract
the audience to read the
interview of one of the
most famous band in the
world.
The masthead of this issue of Q stated the name of
the content page, the logo of Q and the issue date.
This will inform the reader what page this is so they
can find different sections of the magazine they
want to read. For instance, if they want to read
about 50 Cent and his music and business, they can
refer to the content page. This Logo is a type of
branding advertisement to letting the reader know
that they are reading Q magazine. The logo also
refers to the issue number of the magazine because
this will let the audience know if they have read the
recent issue of Q or not, so they can buy the newest
Q magazine if they don’t have the newest issue of Q.
In addition, some people collect magazines so the
collector can buy Q to add to their collection so that
they can prove that they have every single issue of
Q.
Target audience
The target audience of Q is aimed at people between the ages 15-
24. However, more males read Q magazine than female as the
percentage of readership is 68.3 for males and 31.7% for females
between 15-24 is 35.3%. This suggests that more males between
15-24 read Q magazine. This could be because there is a different
eclectic mix of music, so this is why Q is so popular with different
people. Q magazine matches people’s different music styles, for
instance, people who may like 50 Cent’s style or Sam Smith.
However, some people may like the old style of music like U2 or
David Bowie, which the Q mention in the magazine. This music
magazine also helps people to explore their interest of music by
using different artist or genre of music, which is included in the
magazine.
By referring to the ‘Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities’ they would be
considering the age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nationality
and family when analysing the reasons why different groups may
like the same thing. Q magazine appeals to the age range between
15-24 as they will most likely be in the social group of E, D and
maybe C2.
https://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio-economic-needs.png
https://brianinsua6055.wordpress.com/unit-13-planning-pitching-uk-print-
product/unit-13-lo1/
The readership of the socio-economic perspective is categorised in the
ABC1 profile in a percentage. The ABC1 profile for Q magazine is 70% ,
which is quite high. The demographic profile suggests that they are more
interested in the music than the other age range, therefore, maybe they
are interested in working in the music industry as this is the age when
people start to decide what they want to do or decide working for the
first time.
The psychographics looked at personality, values, opinions, attitudes,
interests, and lifestyles. Q magazine is aimed at the lower ABC1 profile
readership as this is aimed at 15-24 year olds , as this is a younger age
range on the socio-economic chart. As the magazine is cheap for a
monthly issue they are able to afford it and get the most for their money.
Target Audience
According to the Katz theory of ‘diversion’ the audience can escape from reality by reading the
music magazine because then they don’t have to think about their real life like work and do
something that they are interested in themselves by reading their favourite music magazine.
Furthermore, the audience can be ‘informed’ and ‘educated’ because they can learn more about
the artists/bands, the music industry.
By referring to the Maslow theory, the audience would be ‘survivors’ as this connotes they like
to know that the magazine will be there every month. They will gain the knowledge about the
music through the magazine. In addition, they would be ‘explorers’ as they like to know different
music information and also explore different genre of music as well.
According to the Psychographic theory they would be ‘explorers’ as they are searching for new
information about the music through the magazines and therefore they maybe interested in the
music industry. The ‘explorers’ would normally be the younger demographic like students or
young adults. ‘Reformers’ are also included in psychographic theory as now they have a new
sense of freedom and want to know what music they like and what music they don’t like and they
seek help within the music magazine. As now as ‘reformers’ they would start to be more socially
aware of information.

Production Processes
2) Managing the
Schedule
This step is to make the
deadline, so the staff can
aim for that date so they
can meet the deadline and
move on to the next task.
Also, if anything has to
change from the first plan,
there must be an
alternative plan, which the
staff must use. This means
the staff will be properly
managed to the magazine’s
schedule and also will have
to meet any deadline if they
want the magazine to be
finished by the publication
date.
3) Editorial and
Budgetary
This step of the magazine
production is where the
editorial decision is
made as to who should
be on the front of this
issue and what artist,
photograph, illustrations
or any ideas for the
article should be
included in the music
magazine. Also, this
need to fit in with their
budget and schedule.
4) Content Acquisition
This is one of the most
important stages of the
magazine’s production as
the editors of the magazine
have to chose between in-
house writer or the external
writers to write about a
specific topic, so the
content of the magazine will
be decided. In addition, the
illustrations will also be
created, whilst the editor is
deciding about the in-house
writers versus the external
writers.
1) Date of
Publication
This step is to set a
date of the
publication. This is the
date that the
magazine must be
released to the
general public. Once
the date has been
decided, you can start
working on the
magazine and start to
plan what to do.
http://hosbeg.com/the-magazine-production-process/
Production Processes
5) Sub- editing
This step is about the
quality checks of the
magazine. This means
the magazine staff
will have to check if
all of the facts in the
magazine are all true,
make sure the
magazine text has the
right spelling,
grammar and the
punctuation. Also
they need to make
sure the magazine has
all the same house-
style and lastly check
the page layout.
6) Page- Layout
This step of the
magazine focuses on the
layout of the magazine.
They use a piece of
powerful desktop
publishing software to
enable the staff to sort
out the magazine layout.
They need to make sure
they fit the
advertisement in the
magazine as the
advertisement company
pay the magazine to
mention them in the
magazine. They also
have to make sure the
text is readable for the
target audience.
7) Proofreading
This step on the
magazine production
is when the editorial
department print out
the first hard copy of
the magazine. Then
they will check for
mistakes in the
magazine before the
magazine is released
to the general public.
They will do this until
everyone in the
editorial team is
happy with the
magazine as there will
be not mistakes in the
magazine.
8) File emailed to
printer
This step follows
proofreading of the
magazine. The
magazine is sent to
the printer again.
When the editorial
team is happy with
the magazine, they
will start to print
mass copies of the
magazine
9) Distribution
This is the last step of
the magazine
production. The
printing company has
finished printing the
issue of the magazine.
The magazine is
packed and sorted out
and then sent to the
warehouse for
distribution. The
warehouse is
organised to send
copies of the
magazine to the
general public for
purchase in different
shops.

Production Processes
I have emailed the publisher about the production process of their music magazine.
The reason I have emailed the publisher is because the information given to me will
help me use the same production for my magazine as Q magazine. Q magazine has no
contacts on their official website or on their magazine, so this is why I have emailed
the publisher and not the magazine itself. However, Bauer have not responded to my
email and therefore I have no answer about the production process of Q magazine.
Relationship between the Distributor
and the ConsumerQ magazine is the UK biggest selling magazine, which means they are
very popular in the shops where someone can buy Q. However, now
Q can be obtained globally by the subscription on their official Q
website. By subscribing to Q online you have a choice of a print copy
of the magazine or a digital version of the magazine. You can also buy
a subscription to both print copy and digital version of Q.
With the subscription, will you ensure that the music magazine will
get their maximum sales of the magazines, so their profits will be
larger. This will also ensure that people around the world can have
access to Q around the world.
You can buy printed
copies of Q in
supermarkets or
newsagents and
bookstores in the UK.
These are locally based so
everyone in the UK can
have access to them. An
example of this is
WHSmith or Sainsbury
supermarket.
This picture was from the Q official
website. This show shows how you
can buy a print copy of the
magazine and also a digital version
of Q magazine.
This also lets the readers know
that you can subscribe to Q

The award ceremony started in
1990, and is normally hosted in the
Abbey Road Studio and more
recently The Park Lane Ballroom.
Q Subscription
On their official website, you can

12 issues, which means this lasts for 1
year. This allows the audience of Q to
have a relationship with Q as they
would be continuously reading them.
Relationship Between The Magazine

Bauer Media provide entertainment to 22 million adults across the UK. Bauer Media publish 62 different
magazines across the UK and the world. These magazines are mainly targeted at adults because they don’t
publish children’s books such as Egmont where their main focus is to publish children’s books such as Barbie,
Angry Bird or Ben 10. However, some of the magazines such as Golf World will be targeted at the older target
audience. This will mean that Bauer Media will be make a larger profit margin.
Some examples of Bauer Media Publication are:
Empire
Grazia
Garden News
Classic Car Weekly
As well as publishing magazines, Bauer Media also owns 34 radio stations across the UK that target young
people so that they will be able to listen to their favourite songs and enjoy some entertainment when they are
at home or in the car.
Some examples of the radio station that Bauer Media will own are
Magic
Kiss
Rock FM
Viking Radio
In addition, Bauer Media own six TV channels enabling people to watch music based programs across the UK.
This is important because they are able to watch program and learn about music at the same time. This would
be targeted at younger people because they are more interested in music rather than the older targeted
audience.
Some examples of the TV channels that Bauer Media own are:
Heat
The Box
Kiss
4 Music
Genre
The genre for the Mojo magazine is rock and pop.
The evidence of the music magazine being eclectic is that the first
issue of Mojo, when released had the cover of Bon Dylan and John
Lennon. This was released in November 1998. Also, some previous
front covers of the magazine included Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and the
Arctic Monkeys. All of these artists have a different genre of music,
which is mentioned in the magazine, which is all rock or pop.
In addition, on the homepage of the Mojo, they have mentioned
different artists, from different age ranges like Slash, the Beatles and
Leon Bridges.
The audience of Mojo is male between the ages of 45-54, as Mojo
mention more music from their generation than the modern day
music. For instance, Mojo mention artists or bands like the Beatles or
The Rolling Stones.
Purpose and Meaning
The masthead of the music magazine is “Mojo” and all the capital letters
are in black. The black represents a mystery or the unknown as with every
issue of Mojo magazine you don’t know who will be mentioned or on the
cover on the music magazine. In addition the masthead of “Mojo” has a
bold, grey 3D effect on the black letters and this will catch the attention of
the Mojo reader. The masthead is large allowing the reader to read it
easily and catch their attention when they are deciding which magazine to
buy. The masthead matches the target audience, as this masthead is classic
and simple and reflect the theme of the rock and pop music magazine. In
addition, the black letters contrast with the grey 3D effect, this means this
is easier for the readers of the target audience to read the masthead.
The denotation of the strapline is “The Music Magazine” this
suggests that Mojo is the only magazine , which offers good value of
money as it provides quality music and the best information about
musicians . The word “The” conveys the message that this magazine
is the best music magazine in the world, this magazine has no
competition from other rival music magazines such as Q or Kerrang!.
The word “music” relates to which genre of music it’s about and
what the reader should expect in the magazine. Moreover the word
“magazine” is stated , which means it is not like a leaflet or a booklet.
However the strapline for Mojo magazine on their official website is
“The World Best Music Magazine”, the Mojo brand have added the
superlative “Best”, which connotes that you can receive the best
information in the world and can get access to the most exclusive
interviews with artists/bands around the world. This will also support
unknown artist/bands so they can become world wide famous.
The background of The Beatles is white. This could imply that the Beatle s
were fresh and new in the 60s, as they created a genre in the music industry,
as their music has changed the rock music. In addition, this could reveal that
the Beatles' music is pure as white representing purity, this means that their
music was different as they invented a style of music and even some people
say that the Beatles were the first successful boy band and influence s other
boy bands to be formed like New Kids on the Block, Take That and One
Direction. This reveals that the Beatles were the biggest boy band in the world
as influenced other artist/bands. Moreover the white could represent a blank
page, as this could suggest that a new genre or a new style in the music
business was missing and the Beatles took the opportunity to fill the gap in the
music industry and make history.
The main image of the Beatles is on the front cover of Mojo magazine. This
was taken when the Beatles were younger. All of them are in a black suit, which
could mean they take themselves and their music very seriously as they are
dressed very smartly in their suit and tie. In addition, the Beatles are in front of
the strapline, which means the Beatles are very well known as their music
inspired the theme of Mojo magazine. On the front cover of the Mojo, Paul
McCartney and John Lennon are in the front of the picture as they are slightly
larger than Ringo Starr and George Harrison. This suggests that Paul McCartney
and John Lennon are the Lead Singers and the most popular members of the
Beatles, whiles Ringo Starr and George Harriion are less popular members of
the Beatles.
The coverline/pull-quote in Mojo magazine is “There were girls
hiding in the ceiling”. This pull-quote is humorous and also makes
the Beatles seem larger than life because the fans were so
dedicated to just see them. This is also humorous because you
don’t expect fans to hided in the ceiling.
Inside feature of Mojo is on the right side of the
magazine, where it is the selling point because you can
see which artists/bands will be featured in the magazine
and reveals if there is an exclusive interview. There is
something for the older generation, which includes the
Pet Shop Boys , The Door, an interview with Paul
McCartney about the first year in the Beatles and how his
life has changed forever. There are also a 21 pages of
Mania.
Barcode, issue date and price tell
the readers which issue of the
magazine they have bought. In
addition, it give the prices of the
magazine in different countries in
the world such as the UK, USA,
Canada prices.
The main cover of the music magazine has “the beastles” in all lower
case suggesting that the Beetles are casual and down to earth. This
could also suggest they don’t take themselves seriously and just like
to have a good time as their celebrity status can be fun for four young
men. The white letters of the “the beastles” contrast with the black
suits of the Beatles, which is easier for the reader to read. In addition,
this is more eye catching for the audience .
The puff promotion, mentioned in the magazine is advertising a free CD of
the Beatles, this is important because this will catch the eyes of the audiences.
By seeing the puff promotion the audience will see the benefits of buying
Mojo as the music magazine comes with a free CD.
Frequency
An issue of Mojo is released monthly.
If Mojo is released monthly, this means the magazine will be more expensive as there will be more articles or information
included in the magazine.
This evidence will prove that Mojo is more expensive because this music magazine is released monthly, however a music
magazine like Kerrang!, is released weekly, is cheaper and also will contain less information. To buy one issue of Mojo will cost
4.99 however, to buy one issue of Kerrang! will cost £2.20. this means you will be paying more for Mojo. However, this will contain
more information, unlike Kerrang!.
On Mojo official website, you can subscribe to Mojo and you can buy it as a gifts. In addition, Mojo offer the printed copy of Mojo
and also the digital magazine version of the magazine can be bought. The printed and the digital version of the magazine will cost
£35.00, also you can save 70% , which is included in the price. The printed copy of the music magazine costs £30.00, this means
this is 50% off the original price. This is the same for the digital version of the magazine, which costs £30.00, which is 50% off the
original price. By the image of the digital picture, this means that that the magazine is available on tablet or a phone.
http://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/bws/mojo-magazine
This image above proves that Mojo is a global music
magazine, which means you can subscribe all round the
world. This means the music company is very successful as
you can pay for the subscription in different currencies. Also
on the Mojo official website drop caption you can subscribe
to Mojo in different countries. However, on the website,
there is a warning that states “Please be aware that we can
not currently offer Mojo Digital Magazine in the USA,
Canada or Mexico”, which means those countries cannot get
the digital version of Mojo.
This reveals that
someone can subscribe
to the hard copy or
digital version of Mojo
magazine.
This picture reveals that you can
buy a subscription as a gift for
someone, this suggests that lots of
people would like a subscription for
Mojo, as Mojo is a very successful
magazine as everyone would like a
subscription as a gift.
Format and StyleFormat
The length of the magazine is 21.6cm and the width is 29.9cm.
Moreover, you can you can subscribe to Mojo online by the phone and the tablet for 12 issues. The frequency is
monthly which means there will be more information in the magazine than a weekly magazine.
Language
The strapline of Mojo is “The Music magazine” however on their website the strapline is “The World’s Best
Music”, both of the Mojo’s different straplines are bold as this will confirm with the reader that they should buy
Mojo instead of the other music magazine, as they contain the best information about music than other music
magazines. In addition, this will give the audience confident, as this means that everyone buys Mojo as this
contains the best information and you don’t want to be left out as this is a world wide magazine.
In addition, on the front cover of the front cover their a quote, which stated “Sex, Grief…Horse! Exclusive! Inside
Her Rock ‘n’ Roll Revolution” this will make the reader want to read on because this quote includes scandal,
sadness and humour in the first three words “Sex, Grief… Horses!” and this will make the readers want to read
about what happened to Patti Smith and how horses formed a part of her life as a rock ‘n’ roll singer.
On the double spread of the magazine, their a quote from Roger Taylor, which stated “People didn’t like
Freddie's openly gay phase. But we didn't’t give a shit”. This suggests that people being gay was a big issue in
the 70s but the band accepted Freddie as he was. In addition, this also suggests that people wouldn’t accept
Freddie because of his sexuality and judge him because of the sexuality. When the pull quote of the word was
“shit” the lack of the expletive in the pull code suggests that this is targeted at a mature audience as the writer
did not spell “shit” like this “sh*t”, which means that the magazine could be seen in as a rebel as the writer
didn’t change the expletive so it would say “shit”. In addition being “gay” in the 70s could be classed scandalous
as being “gay” was not common as it is in the 21 century, therefore people wouldn’t want to be involved with
Freddie because Freddie was openly “gay” and the audience wouldn’t want to be associated with him or the
band.
In addition, on another double spread of Mojo magazine there is another quote, where Brain May said “Freddie
Sang Until His Throat Bled On Another One Bites The Dust. He Wanted To Make It Special”. This reveals that
Freddie Mercury is a perfectionist, one of their many hits, “Another One Bites The Dust” as the lyrics of the song
were right and therefore he had to make his voice perfect so this can be remembered. However, Freddie
Mercury was willing to risk his voice for a song and this says lots about his character as this reveals that he
preferred to lose his voice forever and make “Another One Bites The Dust” one of the greatest hit in the music
history than saving his voice and make music that wouldn't change the music industry. However, this could be
comparing music artist from the 80s to the 21th century music, and this suggests that artists from the 80s make
their music to the best they can and also they will put themselves in physical pain just like Freddie Mercury did
“His Throat Bled” so he would make “Another One Bites The Dust” a successful and was willing losing his voice
forever, as artist from the 21th century do not have the same passion, as now it is all about the image of the
artist. In addition, they would not cause themselves any physical pain like Freddie Mercury did as they want to
look perfect, not sound perfect.

House Style and Colour Scheme
Colour Scheme
On this issue of Mojo the masthead is white and a lighter grey,
which still has the 3D effect. Moreover, the white is used as
the font and on most of the pages. In addition, the
background of the music magazine is blue, which could
represent the world as Patti Smith, she is famous worldwide.
Also, the black is used as the font on most pages and some of
the pages, so it will be easier for the target audience to read
the pages. Moreover, there is a hint of red which is used as
the colour theme, as red is an eye catching colour, which can
attract the target audience. Finally, the yellow is also hinted in
the magazine to suggest that they are sharing the information
with the audience and stating that the magazine has exclusive
information and interviews in the magazine.
House Style
The house style of Mojo is to repeat their mastheads
throughout the magazine next to the page number. This is a
type of brand Identity, as they are always branding themselves
on each page. The colour white and black will be feature on
each page. Moreover, throughout the music magazine,
individual pages of text are all the size for each box of text and
all of the font is in the same style, this is important as the
audeience will be able to read the text and it will be easy to
read.
Double Page Spread Analysis
The drop capital on the double spread of Mojo attracts audiences as this has
a black background, with red, green and white font. This is eye-catching
because the target audience can see the texts very well and it is easy to read.
However the letter of the text is quite small, which means it could be harder
for some people to read. The drop capital, tells you what band/artist Mojo
recommends and also what song they recommend, so you can expand on
their music interest. In addition, this includes information about the dong or
the artist/band, so the audience can feel closer to their favourite band/artist.
The technical code in the double page spread analysing is in three picture of the band Queen.
The larger photo of Queen getting ready backstage before one of there live concert. The photo
is in The Game Tour in America. The photograph is in black and white because this could
represent that Freddie Mercury’s death in 10 years time as he died what he loved doing, singing
and performing. In addition, The Game Tour was the first tour in the 80s. However, in the two
smaller of John Deacon and Brian May, which is in colour, which could suggest that their music
career is still going on as they are still alive, while Freddie Mercury’s live on, even those he is
not alive to see his songs live on.
The pull quote of the magazine is “People Didn’t Like Freddie’s Openly Gay Phase. But We Didn’t Give A Shit”. This
suggests that in the 70s being gay was maybe a scandal or not heard of, as being gay wasn’t common to hear in the media,
as it could be looked down. The phrase “Gay Phase” suggests people didn’t understand that your sexuality is not choice
but who are you, but people didn’t understand about being gay and thought that he may be pretending to be gay so he
could get more time in the media or they though that he didn’t know if he was gay or not, and soon they will be
hexosexual. Moreover, the expletive “shit” reveal that this magazine is for a mature audience as they spelt the expletive
correct, not like “sh*t” Mojo is not aimed for the younger audiences. This could also suggests that the magazine is a bit
rebellious as as they use an expletive in the magazine, which means they don’t care if they are offensive to anyone.
The stand first in Mojo on the double
spread is quoted “ Queen backstage
during The Game Tour, 1980. “During
[chat time] we felt we owned American”
this is in a white font on a black part of
the photograph of the band backstage.
This is eyes-catching as the audience can
see the white font on the black
background. However, the font size of
the letters are small, which could be
hard to read for some people. The
phrase “felt we owned American”
suggest that they were loved by so many
people and were treated like royalty .
This could also convey that they had
conquered American, as their music
reached the hearts of million, which
meant the Americans loved their music.
The white background contrasts with
the black font so it will be easier for
the audience to read the articles. In
the same way the drop capital
contrasts with the black background
and the white, red and green font.
The dropped initial capital in the
double page spread reveal that
they use them to add effect for
the reader, as this will make them
feel that they are going to read
something important or it is an
important part of the article. In
addition the dropped initial
capital is the same letter as the
masthead on the front cover of
Mojo. This also conveys that they
are keeping the house style of the
letters of the magazine in the
articles, so it feels like they have
thought about this editor ‘s
decision.
Contents Analysis
On the content page
there is a collage, which
could be used for
advertisement as this
could reveal that Mojo
magazine is fun and eye-
catching, as it shows
different pictures of the
artist/band and cartoon.
The capital drop is on the
content page the artist/band.
In addition, this will receive
some information and what
albums they recommend
Mojo magazine for the
audience they listen.
Moreover, they will also
recommend different book,
DVDs and lives shows that
the music magazine
recommend to their
audience, so they will like the
same type music, which they
same style of music than
Mojo.
On the content page
on the page number,
there is an anchor,
which is next to the
text in both of the
content pages. This is
important because
the audience can find
which article they
want to read , so
they can read
interviews with their
favourite artist/band,
find out some facts
and read more
anecdotes.
Below the masthead you can find out
what issue number and what date
this magazine was released. This could
help with collectors to have every
issue that Mojo have ever released.
The release date is October 2008 and
this issue number is 172.
This is a pull quote from an
interview from page 50. This will
make the audience want to read
the interview as the editors has
put a specific quote on the content
page so the reader will wonder
what happens in the rest of the
interview.
The content page of the magazine
mentions that there is a cover story about
Queen. You can tell this is a cover story as
there is a red box and with a red font it says
“Cover Story”. This could suggest that this
interview with two members of Queen is
an exclusive and once in a lifetime
interview and they will be going back in
their younger career and also talk about
their memories of Freddie Mercury ,
former lead singer of Queen.
The contents page is spread over two
pages. On the first page there is capital
drop that will include page numbers for
each section of the magazine. On the first
content page there is a capital drop with
page number and the artist/band, albums
and Mojo playlist. In addition, the
masthead is also on the content page.
On both contents pages there is a
masthead. This will also help to find what
section of the magazine you want to read,
like for instances you can read the Queen
cover story on page 82.
The reason for the content page is for you
to locate different articles that you want to
read. In addition, you can also see the
picture on the content page, so this will
advertise the band/artist before actually
starting to read the magazine.
The masthead of Mojo is on both
of the contents pages. This reveals
the masthead is white, which
contrasts with the green
background, whilst the black
masthead contrasts with the white
background. The masthead is bold
and eye-catching for the target
audience, as the masthead is easy
to read.
Target Audience
https://brianinsua6055.wordpress.com/unit-13-planning-pitching-uk-print-
product/unit-13-lo1/
Mojo’s target audience is between the ages of 45-54 as they have
the highest percentage of 28.8%. However, there are more males
reading Mojo than female as the percentage of males reading
Mojo is 73.1%. The reason why more people between the ages of
45-54 read Mojo more is because Mojo has an older style music
such as the Beatles or David Bowie, which means more people
between those ages grew up with that style of music, so the
younger generation would not know who the artists are or just
don’t like their style of music preferring music from Jay Z or Sam
Smith.
By referencing to the “Hartley’s 7 subjectivities”, which consider
the age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nation and family,
this reason why people between the ages of 45-54 buy Mojo is
because they can afford to buy the magazine and therefore, its
no hassle when they have to buy the magazine as its not that
much for them to buy the monthly magazine, which costs £4.99.
https://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio-economic-needs.png
The ABC1 profile is 59.5%, which is average, for a music magazine. The ABC1
profile shows the readership of the socio-economic perspective and is
categorised by the ABC1 profile in a percentage. The demographic suggests that
the age range between 45-54, are more interested in older styles of music like
the the Beatles, U2 and David Bowie. In addition, this could help the younger
ages range to know more about history of the style and artist/bands, so they can
enter into the music industry. In addition, the demographic help people to
understand the popular group of people who buy Mojo magazine. Moreover, the
psychographic analyse the personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and
lifestyles of the target audience who buy Mojo and what type of people buy
Mojo. The music magazine targets the higher ABC1 profile readership of the 45-
54 as mostly males read the music magazine. So the type of people who read
Mojo is male between the ages of 45-54.
Target audience
By referring to Katz theory of ‘diversion’ this could reveal that the audience can escape from their lives
as they can read a music magazine like Mojo. This could be because the audience don’t have to think
about their reality like work, stress, families problems, friends problem, and read about their favourite
artists/bands in the music magazine. Moreover, the audience of the music magazine can have ‘personal
identification’ as this means that the audience could have a shared experience with artists/bands, this
means that they can relate to their situation like for instance if they used to have a drug addiction and
an artist from the magazine used to have a drug addiction, this means that they both went through the
same struggle of overcoming their addiction.
According to Maslow’s theory of ‘Social Climbers’ the audience are determined to improve their quality
of life by improving their social position in life. Furthermore, the term ‘ caregivers’ explain how the
audience can sympathise with a artist/bands situation at this moment in time.
According to Psychographic theory they would be ‘explorers’ as they are searching for new information
about the music through the magazines and therefore they maybe interested in the music industry. The
‘explorers’ would normally be the younger demographic like students or young adults. ‘Reformers’ are
also included in the psychographic theory as now they have a new sense of freedom and want to know
what music they like and what music they don’t like and they seek help within the music magazine. As
now the ‘reformers’ would start to be more socially aware of information.

Production Processes
2) Managing the
Schedule
This step is to make the
deadline, so the staff can
aim for that date so they
can meet the deadline and
move on to the next task.
Also, if anything has to
change from the first plan,
there must be an
alternative plan, which the
staff must use. This means
the staff will be properly
managed to the magazine’s
schedule and also will have
to meet any deadline if they
want the magazine to be
finished by the publication
date.
3) Editorial and
Budgetary
This step of the magazine
production is where the
editorial decision is
made as to who should
be on the front of this
issue and what artist,
photograph, illustrations
or any ideas for the
article should be
included in the music
magazine. Also, this
need to fit in with their
budget and schedule.
4) Content Acquisition
This is one of the most
important stages of the
magazine’s production as
the editors of the magazine
have to chose between in-
house writer or the external
writers to write about a
specific topic, so the
content of the magazine will
be decided. In addition, the
illustrations will also be
created, whilst the editor is
deciding about the in-house
writers versus the external
writers.
Date of Publication
This step is to set a
date of the
publication. This is
the date that the
magazine must be
released to the
general public.
Once the date has
been decided, you
can start working
on the magazine
and start to plan
what to do.
Production Processes
5) Sub- editing
This step is about the
quality checks of the
magazine. This means
the magazine staff will
have to check if all of
the facts in the
magazine are all true,
make sure the
magazine text has the
right spelling, grammar
and the punctuation.
Also they need to make
sure the magazine has
all the same house-
style and lastly check
the page layout.
6) Page- Layout
This step of the magazine
focuses on the layout of
the magazine. They use a
piece of powerful desktop
publishing software to
enable the staff to sort
out the magazine layout.
They need to make sure if
they fit the advertisement
in the magazine as the
advertisement company
pay the magazine to
mention them in the
magazine. They also have
to make sure the text is
readable for the target
audience.
7) Proofreading
This step on the
magazine production
is when the editorial
department print out
the first hard copy of
the magazine. Then
they will check for
mistakes in the
magazine before the
magazine is released
to the general public.
They will do this until
everyone in the
editorial team is
happy with the
magazine as there will
be not mistakes in the
magazine.
8) File emailed to
printer
This step follows
proofreading of
the magazine. The
magazine is sent
to the printer
again. When the
editorial team is
happy with the
magazine, they
will start to print
mass copies of the
magazine
9) Distribution
This is the last step of
the magazine
production. The
printing company has
finished printing the
issue of the magazine.
The magazine is
packed and sorted out
and then sent to the
warehouse for
distribution. The
warehouse is
organised to send
copies of the
magazine to the
general public for
purchase in different
shops.
Production Processes
I emailed the publisher of the music magazine Mojo because there was no
direct email address given to contact Mojo on their official website or in their
magazine. I emailed the publisher to find out about the magazine’s
production processes. However Bauer have not emailed me back. The proof
of my email to them is on the image below
Relationship between the Distributor
and the Consumer
Mojo is sold globally in different shops around the world, which include Brazil, Cyrus,
Switzerland and many more countries. By subscripting to Mojo, the reader around the
world have subscribe to Mojo magazine. You have the choice of whether the reader
would like the magazine in the printed copy or the digital version of the magazine.
However, in some countries they do not offer the digital version of the music magazine
like in the USA, Canada or Mexico.
However, by subscribing online to Mojo magazine the music company can make a larger
profit because anyone around the world can access Mojo magazine by subscribing to the
magazine online and have it deliver to their home.
This reveals that you can
buy Mojo magazine in
supermarkets or

This also suggests that
everyone has easy

subscribe to the Mojo rather than buy the magazine
every month. This allows the reader to keep up to

  • 4. Genre Q magazine Q magazine has a variety of different genres of music. Evidence of the eclectic music in the magazine is on their homepage where there are exclusive images and songs of Paul McCartney in 1981, which premieres a remix of his song Tug of War, which is rock and pop genre music. Also, further down the homepage, there is an article about 50 Cents, who are a modern hip hop music. Also in the magazine, there are different examples of artists who all have a different genre of music such as Amy Winehouse the year after she died, Cheryl Cole and David Bowie . The magazine is supported by the demographics of the Q magazine. As all age ranges do read the magazine because of the eclectic range of articles . The highest percentage of people who read Q magazine is male between the ages of 15-24 , as they would be interested in different generation of music, like U2 or David Bowie. So they can explore their music interest.
  • 5. Purpose and Meaning The denotation of the strapline line for Q magazine is “The World’s Greatest Music Magazine. This suggests that this magazine has an eclectic mix of music for all generations to read as this magazine is made with the best quality for the reader. The use of the word “World's” convey that the magazine is a success and is a global magazine. This could also denote that the magazine is so popular that it is sold globally. The superlative “greatest” suggests that the Q magazine is made to a high quality, it is one of a kind and you can’t get the same information about music is another magazine. The masthead of the magazine is eye-catching, simple and bold. The letter “Q” on the masthead suggests that this is a mature magazine because of the front of the “Q”. The masthead is bold and stands out. The red background is eye catching and bright, this could suggest that this is a powerful magazine because the red symbolises power and this will give you the exclusive information and you are able to explore different genres of music. In addition, the white contrasts with the red background, making the white letters bold and easier on the eye for the target audience. The main image of Amy Winehouse is on the cover of Q magazine. Her facial expression is neutral, which could convey that this is the end of her impact of music, a year after she died. This could bring out an emotion from the audience as she died and therefore stopped creating music. In addition, the audience can see her tattoos of the two red and black hearts, the red could represent her love for music and the black could represent her drug addiction and how her life ended so tragically . The barcode, issue date and price, will inform the audience of the magazine’s price and the issue date of the magazine. The headline of the magazine is “exclusive Amy Winehouse tribute CD” this means the audience can read and listen to her best song in her time alive like Rehab or Back and Black. The inside features in the red box, is the exclusive of which articles will be mentioned in the magazine, this show s different artist s mentioned in the magazine and how they attract different age range of audiences like Rizzle kicks and Maroon 5 for the teenagers and Stewart Lee for adults. Coverlines/Pull-quote is used to attract the audience. Red and white have been chosen as the colour theme for this issue of the magazine. This could be because the letters are more eye-catching for the audience, which could contrast against the dark, dull, grey. The background of Amy Winehouse could be a white door, where there is no light which make the door look grey. This could represent her life ending and also the ending of her music. This could express an emotion of sadness, loss of someone who have changed the music industry forever by her voice. The door could represent a talented young woman walking out of our lives as the alcohol and drug addiction took over her life. On the other hand, this could convey that the alcohol and the drugs entered her life and led to her death. The door could represent the duality of her life, her love of music and enjoyment of entertaining her fans and the darkness of her addictions which happened behind closed doors. The main cover of the magazine is “Amy” in capital letters to emphasise that it’s been a year since she died. This could attract the audience to buy this magazine as she is still famous and still well known for her music, even after she died and people may want to know more about her life and her death. The name “Amy” is in large white writing so this can contrast the white and grey so the letter can be more eye catching for the audience.
  • 6. Frequency Q magazine circulates monthly. This means Q magazine would be more expensive because they are only published once a month and therefore, will have more content than a weekly magazine such as Kerrang!. Q magazine would cost more than Kerrang! because Q contains more information and it is monthly. Q magazine is £4.20, whilst Kerrang! Is £2.20 as this is weekly and contains less information about music. The circulation figures in 2013 was 52,781 between July - December 2013. You can subscribe on your phone, on your tablet and through the magazine, which is branded “best values” for £37.00 for 12 issues per year. Whilst on the Q website you can buy a magazine for £32.00 for 12 issues per year. In addition, you can get the digital magazine on Q in your phone or your tablet, for £32.00. You can buy a ticket master gift card which is worth £20 which you can subscribe to. This shows that you can subscript to a paperback magazine or get a Q on your phone This barcode shows the price of the magazine and also the month when the magazine was released.
  • 7. Format and Style Format The length of the magazine is 21.6cm whilst the width is 28.3cm . You can download Q on the customers’ tablet and phone if they subscribe to Q for 12 issues before buying another subscription for the following year. The content of the music magazine is thicker than the other magazine, as it packs in more information about the music and the artists. Language The Strapline of Q is “The World’s Greatest Music Magazine "suggesting that they are a bold and confident magazine which means the information will be bold and also give the audience confidence that they are paying for better quality information about music than other magazines such as Mojo or Kerrang!. The quote on the front cover of Q is “World Exclusive”, which means no one else in the world has the information that Q has about U2, also that it is the first time U2 has released the information to the public, which means they must buy the magazine to know more about U2. On the editor’s letter, which is a single page spread, they address the reader by saying “Your new issue of Q is a collection of stories about the value of taking your time”, this suggest that Q belongs to everyone not to the publishing company, Bauer Media Group. Moreover, this suggests that the audience is the part of Q and is just as important as the music itself. On the double page spread, it was an interviewed with Ellie Goulding, it stated that “it could shatter Goulding’s nice girl image. This suggests that Goulding doesn’t want to be a pop star and want to be taken more seriously as an artist. So by having an interview with Q, she is being rebellious and shattering her clean image, as she is growing in her music and fame, which implies that she is an artist who will take over the music world. Source: Q October 2015 issue number 351
  • 8. House Style and Colour Scheme Colour Scheme The main house colour of Q is red as this is the colour of the logo on the masthead. In addition, white is another house colour as the letter Q is in white and also when there is a dark page in the magazine, they would use a white colour font. Also, they would use a black colour font to be presented on each page. Therefore, the main colour of Q magazine are red, white and black, are they will be feature on every page of the magazine. This is important because this is a type of brand identity included in the magazine. The potential reason why red is the main colour of Q magazine is because it is bright and eye- catching for the audience to see. In addition, the colour red represent strength and power, which mean that Q will have the power to influence people about music. This is important as more people will be buying Q as the magazine will change people’s mind about the music industry. Also, the magazine feature the colour white and black. This is important as both colours will contrast with each other and therefore it will cause them to stand out. The colour white represent goodness. This is important as the content in the magazine will be accurate and therefore good to release to the public. However, the colour black will represent mystery. This is important as every issues of Q is will be a mystery who will be on the front cover and features in the magazine. This information create cerosious for the audience and therefore they will have to buy the magazine. However, on the front cover of the magazine in the October 2015 issue, they also use the colour yellow because throughout the magazine there are text boxes on some pages that are yellow, which suggests that they feel yellow is a bright colour that makes people feel good. In addition, they may use yellow in the magazine because they have an exclusive interview with U2 as this is the biggest band in the world so Q use the colour yellow to attract the readers to the magazine. Achieving an exclusive interview with U2 is a big scoop for the magazine as well as a huge selling point. House Style The house style of Q magazine is to repeat their mastheads throughout the magazine next to the page number. This is a type of brand Identity, as they are always branding themselves on each page. Moreover, Q magazines always include their house colours of red, white and black on each page. Moreover, throughout the music magazine, individual pages of text are all the size for each box of text and all of the font is in the same style. Source: Q October 2015 issue number 351
  • 9. Double Page Spread Analysing The drop capital is to attract the audience to read about Elle Goulding’s albums and learn fun facts about her albums and rumours about her songs. Also, it named the producers, the release date, where the albums were recorded and tracks on the drop capital. The technical code of the medium shot on the double page spread focuses on Ellie Goulding . The photograph of Ellie Goulding is taken with a medium shot, as her hands are over her headphone. This could suggest that music is really important to her as in the background, she is in the recording studio planning one of her many hits. Her face shows high concentration, which implies that she wants to make the best music possible. She has chosen to wear black clothing instead of bright coloured clothing which suggests she could be trying to rip off her good girl image and become more rebellious . This implies that as she is changing, also her music will change. On the left of the image there is a pull quote which is in bold white capital letters. This is accompanied by a specific quote that was included from the interview. The pull quote from Q “Hear Me Roar” conveys that we haven’t heard the best of Ellie Goulding yet. In addition, this could suggest that she was never number one on the music magazine in the past and is determined to achieve that position now and she won’t be second best without a fight, as she is the number one female artist for Q. The stand first on the double page spread is below the pull quote as her name is highlighted in yellow to ensure the she actually said that to Q . It is also eye-catching to the audience so they can quickly read her threat to the music industry as she will become a global artist. In addition, the quote is in red with the rest of the interview text in black. Also the front is bold in colour and eye-catching for the reader who will be drawn to read this quote. Having another drop capital in pale yellow about the next albums of other artists such as CeeLo Cool, Wilko Johnson or Deadmaus, suggests that all of these artists mentioned are her rivals in the music industry. During the double page spread the focus is on Ellie Goulding as the public eye is on her as she is the up and coming artists and her album will change her clean image and also the audience will have high expectations for this album because she has put all of her energy and power into the new albums. She has expressed some emotive phrases that will keep the readers wondering about her new attitude to her music.
  • 10. Contents Analysis The sub line of the magazine summarise the artist, interviews and also the page number of the review, which is called the Q Review, suggesting that writers interview the artist and what they have done or write a review of what they have done. On the right side of the magazine the Q logo can be found along with the issue date of the magazine. On the content page the page number anchors the main picture of the artist and directs the audience to read the story about their favourite artists. In addition, below the page number there is a summary of what the artist has achieved or facts about them so the audience can understand them more as the person than a celebrity. On the main picture of U2 on the content page, they a flash which stated “Cover Story” this suggests that they are the main focus of this issue of Q, therefore this will attract the audience to read the interview of one of the most famous band in the world. The masthead of this issue of Q stated the name of the content page, the logo of Q and the issue date. This will inform the reader what page this is so they can find different sections of the magazine they want to read. For instance, if they want to read about 50 Cent and his music and business, they can refer to the content page. This Logo is a type of branding advertisement to letting the reader know that they are reading Q magazine. The logo also refers to the issue number of the magazine because this will let the audience know if they have read the recent issue of Q or not, so they can buy the newest Q magazine if they don’t have the newest issue of Q. In addition, some people collect magazines so the collector can buy Q to add to their collection so that they can prove that they have every single issue of Q.
  • 11. Target audience The target audience of Q is aimed at people between the ages 15- 24. However, more males read Q magazine than female as the percentage of readership is 68.3 for males and 31.7% for females between 15-24 is 35.3%. This suggests that more males between 15-24 read Q magazine. This could be because there is a different eclectic mix of music, so this is why Q is so popular with different people. Q magazine matches people’s different music styles, for instance, people who may like 50 Cent’s style or Sam Smith. However, some people may like the old style of music like U2 or David Bowie, which the Q mention in the magazine. This music magazine also helps people to explore their interest of music by using different artist or genre of music, which is included in the magazine. By referring to the ‘Hartley’s 7 Subjectivities’ they would be considering the age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nationality and family when analysing the reasons why different groups may like the same thing. Q magazine appeals to the age range between 15-24 as they will most likely be in the social group of E, D and maybe C2. https://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio-economic-needs.png https://brianinsua6055.wordpress.com/unit-13-planning-pitching-uk-print- product/unit-13-lo1/ The readership of the socio-economic perspective is categorised in the ABC1 profile in a percentage. The ABC1 profile for Q magazine is 70% , which is quite high. The demographic profile suggests that they are more interested in the music than the other age range, therefore, maybe they are interested in working in the music industry as this is the age when people start to decide what they want to do or decide working for the first time. The psychographics looked at personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Q magazine is aimed at the lower ABC1 profile readership as this is aimed at 15-24 year olds , as this is a younger age range on the socio-economic chart. As the magazine is cheap for a monthly issue they are able to afford it and get the most for their money.
  • 12. Target Audience According to the Katz theory of ‘diversion’ the audience can escape from reality by reading the music magazine because then they don’t have to think about their real life like work and do something that they are interested in themselves by reading their favourite music magazine. Furthermore, the audience can be ‘informed’ and ‘educated’ because they can learn more about the artists/bands, the music industry. By referring to the Maslow theory, the audience would be ‘survivors’ as this connotes they like to know that the magazine will be there every month. They will gain the knowledge about the music through the magazine. In addition, they would be ‘explorers’ as they like to know different music information and also explore different genre of music as well. According to the Psychographic theory they would be ‘explorers’ as they are searching for new information about the music through the magazines and therefore they maybe interested in the music industry. The ‘explorers’ would normally be the younger demographic like students or young adults. ‘Reformers’ are also included in psychographic theory as now they have a new sense of freedom and want to know what music they like and what music they don’t like and they seek help within the music magazine. As now as ‘reformers’ they would start to be more socially aware of information. https://ncrafts.wordpress.com/ctec-level-3-introductory-diploma-in-media-candidates/unit-30-uk-media-publishing/
  • 13. Production Processes 2) Managing the Schedule This step is to make the deadline, so the staff can aim for that date so they can meet the deadline and move on to the next task. Also, if anything has to change from the first plan, there must be an alternative plan, which the staff must use. This means the staff will be properly managed to the magazine’s schedule and also will have to meet any deadline if they want the magazine to be finished by the publication date. 3) Editorial and Budgetary This step of the magazine production is where the editorial decision is made as to who should be on the front of this issue and what artist, photograph, illustrations or any ideas for the article should be included in the music magazine. They need to make sure they fit the advertisement in the magazine as the advertisement company pay the magazine to mention them in the magazine. They also have to make sure the text is readable for the target audience. 7) Proofreading This step on the magazine production is when the editorial department print out the first hard copy of the magazine. They will do this until everyone in the editorial team is happy with the magazine as there will be not mistakes in the magazine. 8) File emailed to printer This step follows proofreading of the magazine. The magazine is sent to the printer again. When the editorial team is happy with the magazine, they will start to print mass copies of the magazine 9) Distribution This is the last step of the magazine production. The printing company has finished printing the issue of the magazine. The magazine is packed and sorted out and then sent to the warehouse for distribution. The warehouse is organised to send copies of the magazine to the general public for purchase in different shops. http://hosbeg.com/the-magazine-production-process/
  • 15. Production Processes I have emailed the publisher about the production process of their music magazine. The reason I have emailed the publisher is because the information given to me will help me use the same production for my magazine as Q magazine. Q magazine has no contacts on their official website or on their magazine, so this is why I have emailed the publisher and not the magazine itself. However, Bauer have not responded to my email and therefore I have no answer about the production process of Q magazine.

  • 20. Genre The genre for the Mojo magazine is rock and pop. The evidence of the music magazine being eclectic is that the first issue of Mojo, when released had the cover of Bon Dylan and John Lennon. This was released in November 1998. Also, some previous front covers of the magazine included Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and the Arctic Monkeys. All of these artists have a different genre of music, which is mentioned in the magazine, which is all rock or pop. In addition, on the homepage of the Mojo, they have mentioned different artists, from different age ranges like Slash, the Beatles and Leon Bridges. The audience of Mojo is male between the ages of 45-54, as Mojo mention more music from their generation than the modern day music. For instance, Mojo mention artists or bands like the Beatles or The Rolling Stones.
  • 21. Purpose and Meaning The masthead of the music magazine is “Mojo” and all the capital letters are in black. The black represents a mystery or the unknown as with every issue of Mojo magazine you don’t know who will be mentioned or on the cover on the music magazine. In addition the masthead of “Mojo” has a bold, grey 3D effect on the black letters and this will catch the attention of the Mojo reader. The masthead is large allowing the reader to read it easily and catch their attention when they are deciding which magazine to buy. The masthead matches the target audience, as this masthead is classic and simple and reflect the theme of the rock and pop music magazine. In addition, the black letters contrast with the grey 3D effect, this means this is easier for the readers of the target audience to read the masthead. The denotation of the strapline is “The Music Magazine” this suggests that Mojo is the only magazine , which offers good value of money as it provides quality music and the best information about musicians . The word “The” conveys the message that this magazine is the best music magazine in the world, this magazine has no competition from other rival music magazines such as Q or Kerrang!. The word “music” relates to which genre of music it’s about and what the reader should expect in the magazine. Moreover the word “magazine” is stated , which means it is not like a leaflet or a booklet. However the strapline for Mojo magazine on their official website is “The World Best Music Magazine”, the Mojo brand have added the superlative “Best”, which connotes that you can receive the best information in the world and can get access to the most exclusive interviews with artists/bands around the world. This will also support unknown artist/bands so they can become world wide famous. The background of The Beatles is white. This could imply that the Beatle s were fresh and new in the 60s, as they created a genre in the music industry, as their music has changed the rock music. In addition, this could reveal that the Beatles' music is pure as white representing purity, this means that their music was different as they invented a style of music and even some people say that the Beatles were the first successful boy band and influence s other boy bands to be formed like New Kids on the Block, Take That and One Direction. This reveals that the Beatles were the biggest boy band in the world as influenced other artist/bands. Moreover the white could represent a blank page, as this could suggest that a new genre or a new style in the music business was missing and the Beatles took the opportunity to fill the gap in the music industry and make history. The main image of the Beatles is on the front cover of Mojo magazine. This was taken when the Beatles were younger. All of them are in a black suit, which could mean they take themselves and their music very seriously as they are dressed very smartly in their suit and tie. In addition, the Beatles are in front of the strapline, which means the Beatles are very well known as their music inspired the theme of Mojo magazine. On the front cover of the Mojo, Paul McCartney and John Lennon are in the front of the picture as they are slightly larger than Ringo Starr and George Harrison. This suggests that Paul McCartney and John Lennon are the Lead Singers and the most popular members of the Beatles, whiles Ringo Starr and George Harriion are less popular members of the Beatles. The coverline/pull-quote in Mojo magazine is “There were girls hiding in the ceiling”. This pull-quote is humorous and also makes the Beatles seem larger than life because the fans were so dedicated to just see them. This is also humorous because you don’t expect fans to hided in the ceiling. Inside feature of Mojo is on the right side of the magazine, where it is the selling point because you can see which artists/bands will be featured in the magazine and reveals if there is an exclusive interview. There is something for the older generation, which includes the Pet Shop Boys , The Door, an interview with Paul McCartney about the first year in the Beatles and how his life has changed forever. There are also a 21 pages of Mania. Barcode, issue date and price tell the readers which issue of the magazine they have bought. In addition, it give the prices of the magazine in different countries in the world such as the UK, USA, Canada prices. The main cover of the music magazine has “the beastles” in all lower case suggesting that the Beetles are casual and down to earth. This could also suggest they don’t take themselves seriously and just like to have a good time as their celebrity status can be fun for four young men. The white letters of the “the beastles” contrast with the black suits of the Beatles, which is easier for the reader to read. In addition, this is more eye catching for the audience . The puff promotion, mentioned in the magazine is advertising a free CD of the Beatles, this is important because this will catch the eyes of the audiences. By seeing the puff promotion the audience will see the benefits of buying Mojo as the music magazine comes with a free CD.
  • 22. Frequency An issue of Mojo is released monthly. If Mojo is released monthly, this means the magazine will be more expensive as there will be more articles or information included in the magazine. This evidence will prove that Mojo is more expensive because this music magazine is released monthly, however a music magazine like Kerrang!, is released weekly, is cheaper and also will contain less information. To buy one issue of Mojo will cost 4.99 however, to buy one issue of Kerrang! will cost £2.20. this means you will be paying more for Mojo. However, this will contain more information, unlike Kerrang!. On Mojo official website, you can subscribe to Mojo and you can buy it as a gifts. In addition, Mojo offer the printed copy of Mojo and also the digital magazine version of the magazine can be bought. The printed and the digital version of the magazine will cost £35.00, also you can save 70% , which is included in the price. The printed copy of the music magazine costs £30.00, this means this is 50% off the original price. This is the same for the digital version of the magazine, which costs £30.00, which is 50% off the original price. By the image of the digital picture, this means that that the magazine is available on tablet or a phone. http://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/bws/mojo-magazine This image above proves that Mojo is a global music magazine, which means you can subscribe all round the world. This means the music company is very successful as you can pay for the subscription in different currencies. Also on the Mojo official website drop caption you can subscribe to Mojo in different countries. However, on the website, there is a warning that states “Please be aware that we can not currently offer Mojo Digital Magazine in the USA, Canada or Mexico”, which means those countries cannot get the digital version of Mojo. This reveals that someone can subscribe to the hard copy or digital version of Mojo magazine. This picture reveals that you can buy a subscription as a gift for someone, this suggests that lots of people would like a subscription for Mojo, as Mojo is a very successful magazine as everyone would like a subscription as a gift.
  • 23. Format and StyleFormat The length of the magazine is 21.6cm and the width is 29.9cm. Moreover, you can you can subscribe to Mojo online by the phone and the tablet for 12 issues. The frequency is monthly which means there will be more information in the magazine than a weekly magazine. Language The strapline of Mojo is “The Music magazine” however on their website the strapline is “The World’s Best Music”, both of the Mojo’s different straplines are bold as this will confirm with the reader that they should buy Mojo instead of the other music magazine, as they contain the best information about music than other music magazines. In addition, this will give the audience confident, as this means that everyone buys Mojo as this contains the best information and you don’t want to be left out as this is a world wide magazine. In addition, on the front cover of the front cover their a quote, which stated “Sex, Grief…Horse! Exclusive! Inside Her Rock ‘n’ Roll Revolution” this will make the reader want to read on because this quote includes scandal, sadness and humour in the first three words “Sex, Grief… Horses!” and this will make the readers want to read about what happened to Patti Smith and how horses formed a part of her life as a rock ‘n’ roll singer. On the double spread of the magazine, their a quote from Roger Taylor, which stated “People didn’t like Freddie's openly gay phase. But we didn't’t give a shit”. This suggests that people being gay was a big issue in the 70s but the band accepted Freddie as he was. In addition, this also suggests that people wouldn’t accept Freddie because of his sexuality and judge him because of the sexuality. When the pull quote of the word was “shit” the lack of the expletive in the pull code suggests that this is targeted at a mature audience as the writer did not spell “shit” like this “sh*t”, which means that the magazine could be seen in as a rebel as the writer didn’t change the expletive so it would say “shit”. In addition being “gay” in the 70s could be classed scandalous as being “gay” was not common as it is in the 21 century, therefore people wouldn’t want to be involved with Freddie because Freddie was openly “gay” and the audience wouldn’t want to be associated with him or the band. In addition, on another double spread of Mojo magazine there is another quote, where Brain May said “Freddie Sang Until His Throat Bled On Another One Bites The Dust. He Wanted To Make It Special”. This reveals that Freddie Mercury is a perfectionist, one of their many hits, “Another One Bites The Dust” as the lyrics of the song were right and therefore he had to make his voice perfect so this can be remembered. However, Freddie Mercury was willing to risk his voice for a song and this says lots about his character as this reveals that he preferred to lose his voice forever and make “Another One Bites The Dust” one of the greatest hit in the music history than saving his voice and make music that wouldn't change the music industry. However, this could be comparing music artist from the 80s to the 21th century music, and this suggests that artists from the 80s make their music to the best they can and also they will put themselves in physical pain just like Freddie Mercury did “His Throat Bled” so he would make “Another One Bites The Dust” a successful and was willing losing his voice forever, as artist from the 21th century do not have the same passion, as now it is all about the image of the artist. In addition, they would not cause themselves any physical pain like Freddie Mercury did as they want to look perfect, not sound perfect. • 24. House Style and Colour Scheme Colour Scheme On this issue of Mojo the masthead is white and a lighter grey, which still has the 3D effect. Moreover, the white is used as the font and on most of the pages. In addition, the background of the music magazine is blue, which could represent the world as Patti Smith, she is famous worldwide. Also, the black is used as the font on most pages and some of the pages, so it will be easier for the target audience to read the pages. Moreover, there is a hint of red which is used as the colour theme, as red is an eye catching colour, which can attract the target audience. Finally, the yellow is also hinted in the magazine to suggest that they are sharing the information with the audience and stating that the magazine has exclusive information and interviews in the magazine. House Style The house style of Mojo is to repeat their mastheads throughout the magazine next to the page number. This is a type of brand Identity, as they are always branding themselves on each page. The colour white and black will be feature on each page. Moreover, throughout the music magazine, individual pages of text are all the size for each box of text and all of the font is in the same style, this is important as the audeience will be able to read the text and it will be easy to read.
  • 25. Double Page Spread Analysis The drop capital on the double spread of Mojo attracts audiences as this has a black background, with red, green and white font. This is eye-catching because the target audience can see the texts very well and it is easy to read. However the letter of the text is quite small, which means it could be harder for some people to read. The drop capital, tells you what band/artist Mojo recommends and also what song they recommend, so you can expand on their music interest. In addition, this includes information about the dong or the artist/band, so the audience can feel closer to their favourite band/artist. The technical code in the double page spread analysing is in three picture of the band Queen. The larger photo of Queen getting ready backstage before one of there live concert. The photo is in The Game Tour in America. The photograph is in black and white because this could represent that Freddie Mercury’s death in 10 years time as he died what he loved doing, singing and performing. In addition, The Game Tour was the first tour in the 80s. However, in the two smaller of John Deacon and Brian May, which is in colour, which could suggest that their music career is still going on as they are still alive, while Freddie Mercury’s live on, even those he is not alive to see his songs live on. The pull quote of the magazine is “People Didn’t Like Freddie’s Openly Gay Phase. But We Didn’t Give A Shit”. This suggests that in the 70s being gay was maybe a scandal or not heard of, as being gay wasn’t common to hear in the media, as it could be looked down. The phrase “Gay Phase” suggests people didn’t understand that your sexuality is not choice but who are you, but people didn’t understand about being gay and thought that he may be pretending to be gay so he could get more time in the media or they though that he didn’t know if he was gay or not, and soon they will be hexosexual. Moreover, the expletive “shit” reveal that this magazine is for a mature audience as they spelt the expletive correct, not like “sh*t” Mojo is not aimed for the younger audiences. This could also suggests that the magazine is a bit rebellious as as they use an expletive in the magazine, which means they don’t care if they are offensive to anyone. The stand first in Mojo on the double spread is quoted “ Queen backstage during The Game Tour, 1980. “During [chat time] we felt we owned American” this is in a white font on a black part of the photograph of the band backstage. This is eyes-catching as the audience can see the white font on the black background. However, the font size of the letters are small, which could be hard to read for some people. The phrase “felt we owned American” suggest that they were loved by so many people and were treated like royalty . This could also convey that they had conquered American, as their music reached the hearts of million, which meant the Americans loved their music. The white background contrasts with the black font so it will be easier for the audience to read the articles. In the same way the drop capital contrasts with the black background and the white, red and green font. The dropped initial capital in the double page spread reveal that they use them to add effect for the reader, as this will make them feel that they are going to read something important or it is an important part of the article. In addition the dropped initial capital is the same letter as the masthead on the front cover of Mojo. This also conveys that they are keeping the house style of the letters of the magazine in the articles, so it feels like they have thought about this editor ‘s decision.
  • 26. Contents Analysis On the content page there is a collage, which could be used for advertisement as this could reveal that Mojo magazine is fun and eye- catching, as it shows different pictures of the artist/band and cartoon. The capital drop is on the content page the artist/band. In addition, this will receive some information and what albums they recommend Mojo magazine for the audience they listen. Moreover, they will also recommend different book, DVDs and lives shows that the music magazine recommend to their audience, so they will like the same type music, which they same style of music than Mojo. On the content page on the page number, there is an anchor, which is next to the text in both of the content pages. This is important because the audience can find which article they want to read , so they can read interviews with their favourite artist/band, find out some facts and read more anecdotes. Below the masthead you can find out what issue number and what date this magazine was released. This could help with collectors to have every issue that Mojo have ever released. The release date is October 2008 and this issue number is 172. This is a pull quote from an interview from page 50. This will make the audience want to read the interview as the editors has put a specific quote on the content page so the reader will wonder what happens in the rest of the interview. The content page of the magazine mentions that there is a cover story about Queen. You can tell this is a cover story as there is a red box and with a red font it says “Cover Story”. This could suggest that this interview with two members of Queen is an exclusive and once in a lifetime interview and they will be going back in their younger career and also talk about their memories of Freddie Mercury , former lead singer of Queen. The contents page is spread over two pages. On the first page there is capital drop that will include page numbers for each section of the magazine. On the first content page there is a capital drop with page number and the artist/band, albums and Mojo playlist. In addition, the masthead is also on the content page. On both contents pages there is a masthead. This will also help to find what section of the magazine you want to read, like for instances you can read the Queen cover story on page 82. The reason for the content page is for you to locate different articles that you want to read. In addition, you can also see the picture on the content page, so this will advertise the band/artist before actually starting to read the magazine. The masthead of Mojo is on both of the contents pages. This reveals the masthead is white, which contrasts with the green background, whilst the black masthead contrasts with the white background. The masthead is bold and eye-catching for the target audience, as the masthead is easy to read.
  • 27. Target Audience https://brianinsua6055.wordpress.com/unit-13-planning-pitching-uk-print- product/unit-13-lo1/ Mojo’s target audience is between the ages of 45-54 as they have the highest percentage of 28.8%. However, there are more males reading Mojo than female as the percentage of males reading Mojo is 73.1%. The reason why more people between the ages of 45-54 read Mojo more is because Mojo has an older style music such as the Beatles or David Bowie, which means more people between those ages grew up with that style of music, so the younger generation would not know who the artists are or just don’t like their style of music preferring music from Jay Z or Sam Smith. By referencing to the “Hartley’s 7 subjectivities”, which consider the age, gender, class, ethnicity, self-image, nation and family, this reason why people between the ages of 45-54 buy Mojo is because they can afford to buy the magazine and therefore, its no hassle when they have to buy the magazine as its not that much for them to buy the monthly magazine, which costs £4.99. https://ncrafts.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/socio-economic-needs.png The ABC1 profile is 59.5%, which is average, for a music magazine. The ABC1 profile shows the readership of the socio-economic perspective and is categorised by the ABC1 profile in a percentage. The demographic suggests that the age range between 45-54, are more interested in older styles of music like the the Beatles, U2 and David Bowie. In addition, this could help the younger ages range to know more about history of the style and artist/bands, so they can enter into the music industry. In addition, the demographic help people to understand the popular group of people who buy Mojo magazine. Moreover, the psychographic analyse the personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests, and lifestyles of the target audience who buy Mojo and what type of people buy Mojo. The music magazine targets the higher ABC1 profile readership of the 45- 54 as mostly males read the music magazine. So the type of people who read Mojo is male between the ages of 45-54.
  • 28. Target audience By referring to Katz theory of ‘diversion’ this could reveal that the audience can escape from their lives as they can read a music magazine like Mojo. This could be because the audience don’t have to think about their reality like work, stress, families problems, friends problem, and read about their favourite artists/bands in the music magazine. Moreover, the audience of the music magazine can have ‘personal identification’ as this means that the audience could have a shared experience with artists/bands, this means that they can relate to their situation like for instance if they used to have a drug addiction and an artist from the magazine used to have a drug addiction, this means that they both went through the same struggle of overcoming their addiction. According to Maslow’s theory of ‘Social Climbers’ the audience are determined to improve their quality of life by improving their social position in life. Furthermore, the term ‘ caregivers’ explain how the audience can sympathise with a artist/bands situation at this moment in time. According to Psychographic theory they would be ‘explorers’ as they are searching for new information about the music through the magazines and therefore they maybe interested in the music industry. The ‘explorers’ would normally be the younger demographic like students or young adults. ‘Reformers’ are also included in the psychographic theory as now they have a new sense of freedom and want to know what music they like and what music they don’t like and they seek help within the music magazine. As now the ‘reformers’ would start to be more socially aware of information. https://ncrafts.wordpress.com/ctec-level-3-introductory-diploma-in-media-candidates/unit-30-uk-media-publishing/
