2. Purpose and Meaning
Q Magazine
The deeper meaning behind the Q magazines name demonstrates how the magazine
has a bold and easy to remember logo for the reader. Also the fact that the designers
decided to use the colour red as their logo colour depicts the content on the inside of
the magazine and what it is about. Furthermore the font implies how the magazine
wants to keep its logo simple and memorable for the reader as well as it creates a
formal expression on the reader. The size of the font however connotes that the
content on the inside is going to be big news either to do with famous musicians or
Their music.
KERRANG!: The KERRANG! magazine how ever uses more darker colours such as
black and greys which links to the fact that the magazine is focused around rock music.
Furthermore the logo that is used and that is shown below implies strobe lighting which
connects to a concert and also the fact that the website and magazine are to do with
rock music and musicians. The logo “KERRANG!” connotes how bold and how
memorable the logo is to the reader. Similarly the title and logo depicts what content is
inside the magazine and it does this by using a bold font and dark colours.
3. Form and style
Q magazine is 30.6cm by 22.2cm in size and has a specific color scheme of
red, black and white. The reason for this is because the red is meant to
stand out a lot more than the other colors as it is meant to be the first color
than you see. Also the main image on the page is the biggest thing on the
page as it is also one of the first things that should be seen in on the front
cover of a magazine. Around the main image on the front cover there are
strap lines and other information hinting to what is on the inside of the
magazine.
KERRANG! magazine is 28.5cm by 21.3cm in size and also follows a
specific color scheme. The only difference is that KERRANGS! Colors are a
lot darker than the Q magazines as the magazine focuses on rock and role.
Similarly, there is also a main image on the front cover of all of the
KERRANG! Magazines front covers due to the fact that by showing big
bands for example on the cover can draw the attention of the consumers
making them want to buy the magazine. Another difference however is that
the KERRANG! Magazine looks a lot more packed on the cover and tends to
put more bands on the cover rather than just one person or singer.

The Masthead is in the left hand
third, it has a large white letter Q on a
red background. Because of its size
and where it is placed it is the first
thing you see and read as it is clearly
visible. Also underneath the letter Q
there is a slogan which describes the
purpose of the magazine.
Beneath the Mast head is the
strap line and they are in
capital letters with the
explanation of the cover line.
This use of red, gold, white and
black text implies the house
style.
The pull quote is quite
informal and the use of the
word “tit” makes the reader
want to read the magazine.
As you can see it is fairly
large and black in order to
match the color scheme.
The flash is placed to the
top right of the magazine cover
and is slightly behind the main
image. The artists name is in
black and once again in black
and fairly large which
continues with the house style.
The main image is a
close up of the artist Liam
Gallagher with his band
mates in the reflection. The
fact that the band mates
are a reflection depicts that
Liam is the main focus
The bar code is in the
bottom left hand corner as
it is the last thing you see,
therefor the least important
as it contains the price as
they have aimed to
convince you to buy the
magazine

Image
This article has two main images, one on each page. The the
first image is of Brandon flowers which is clearly stated by the
title, and he is holding a electric guitar, while sitting in a dimly lit
room. This helps to reflect the “at home” style which he likes to
create in his style of his music
The background
The background is a
solid, single colour and
this helps connote how
professional the
magazine is as well as
how simple it is.
20. Front cover analysis
This magazine is advertising a
article about a music festival
(download festival) which
supports the same music genre
as the magazine. This music
festival brings people from the
around the world together as
one community in order to
enjoy the music. The reader
would feel good to be part of
the community and would
proceed to attending the
festival.
“Bring me the Horizon” is
in a bright yellow text
which contrasts with the
background and there for
stands out to the reader
and attracting their
attention.
The magazine also has
header which demonstrates
that you can “win” a place at
the rock music festival playing
as your band. This
encourages people to pick a
guitar and make a band to
experience the same life as
their favorite rock idols.
The dark clothes of the people in the
main image comes across as
intimidating as some of the centre
band members have their arms
crossed which excites the readers
as it demonstrates that they mean
business.

from the article which is a quote full
on and outrageous which attracts
gossip for the readers. The quote

The main image used is the
main article in the magazine.
The image is large there for
drawing attention to it which
is what the magazine wants
the reader to do.
There are also more smaller
images around the main
image which are also articles
included in the magazine
and under each image there
is a caption stating what the
article is about.
The name of each band is
written in block capitals and
is in a bold font. This allows
the reader to easily see the
bands name.
Next to the bands name is
the page number highlighted
in yellow which allows the
reader to skip to this page to
read the article.
The yellow of the word ”
contents ” contrasts against
the black background
making the Masthead stand
out.
The context column
mainly includes names
of different bands.
This is to attract the
reader attention to
their favorite bands,
so they will then buy
the magazine.
The Masthead font and
color are not the same
as the front covers
Masthead font, although
the black background
does match the front
covers Masthead color.
22. DPS analysis
The main heading is in a
large bold orange/red font
which stands out to the
readers as they skim
through the pages. There is
also a logo of a bug, which
will catch the attention of
the readers this will make
them wan to read he article

The colors used on
the clothing and also
the sharp color of the
lead singers hair
‘Gerard Way’ is
matching the color of
the main headline.
This is to keep within
the house style of the
magazine.
23. Production process
Date of publication: The producers of the magazine would decide what date the magazine would be published to the general public so that they can work to a
schedule.
Managing the schedule: If you want your magazine to be successful you must not take this for granted but instead properly manage your magazine. Also the
schedule should be made in such a way that there are provisions for certain mishaps so that if these mishaps occur you are still able to meet the deadline for the
magazine.
Editorial and Budgetary decision: The Editorial team must then for the next step start to assemble in deciding what topics will be covered in the next issue of the
magazine. Furthermore, after deciding the various contents of the magazine and what photographer will be in the magazine they then must decide the budgetary
decision. This part is where the team decide how much they are going to spend on the production of the magazine while keeping in their budget.
Content Acquisition: This part is arguably the most important step as without content their cannot be a front cover in the first place. Therefore are two ways that
this content can be gathered one way is in-house staff writers and the second way is external writers. The images and pictures that are going to be in the
magazine are done by these writers and worked on before going into the magazine.
Sub editing: This step focuses on quality control more than anything and so this is a job for the editor who is in charge of: Checking the accuracy of all the facts,
Making sure that words are properly spelt etc.
Page layout: This part includes the layout staff and their job is to ensure that the pages and contents of the magazine comes together to make the magazine
correctly.
Proofreading: The editorial department simple print out a hardcopy of the magazine and read through it to check for any mistakes as well as any mistakes are
quickly corrected.
File emailed to printer: Then the DTP file is sent to the printer in which the term ”print press” comes in and here it is the process of checking that all of the images
and text in the magazine is sent to the printer correctly. Additionally, then the printing company takes over but before they print hundreds of thousands of copies a
few copies are printed and sent to the editor for one final check.
Finally the Distribution stage: and here all of the printing is sent to the warehouses before distributed out to the public to read.

24. Conclusion
What I’ve learnt:
By completing this power point I have learnt a range of different skills
and gained important knowledge about magazines that I never new
before. For example I never new that so mush detail went into making
and constructing a magazine like the Masthead which is the main logo of
the magazine as seen on some of my previous slides. Furthermore I
have also learnt that when making a magazine you must focus on not
only what goes into the magazine but also the audience that will be
looking at the magazine and wanting to read it. This is evident as some
of my previous slides state that the Q magazine would have audience of
around16-35 year olds due to its range of different music genres.
